This movie makes Michael Moore look like a paragon of bipartisanship. I'm not that big into politics, but D'Souza really gives President Trump a good buttering up, to put it lightly. I wanted so badly to even give this film 1 point, but the direction is so bad, and arguments are so clearly spun and altered that this movie is nothing more than a "feel-good" pleaser for the fans of Info-Wars and worshippers of Trump.

I wanted so badly to give this film even one redeeming quality. The camera work is bad. The interviews and segments are butchered. DId D'Souza even study film? Who funded this? Who backed this madman?

It's not some worldwide conspiracy that Nazis and fascists are called far-right just because "the Left" has propagated revisionist history. In the Weimar Republic years, the NSDAP members occupied the seats of parliament which were literally the farthest to the right. The Nazis knew they were of the Right. The non-Nazi German conservatives of the time knew they were of the Right. Reasonable conservatives all over Europe know the Nazis were of the Right. All you're doing is the same repulsive deflecting **** that left-wingers do when they say the brutal far-left governments of the 20th century were actually right-wing.

Each European nation's fascist movement were comprised of former conservatives/former conservative voters. The NSDAP (Nazi Party) gained popularity at the expense of Germany's other right-wing parties in the early 1930's. The German People's Party, German National People's Party, and most splinter right-wing parties saw almost all of their support transfer to the Nazis.

See for yourself: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1e/German_parliamentary_elections_weimar.png

That link has the best illustrations of every German federal election after the war. Yeah, I'm sorry it's in German, but it shows the highest voted party in each state and the total percentage of the vote each major party received. I share it to plainly show how the Nazi Party consumed the German Right in the early 1930's. Look up the voting results for yourself if you aren't convinced.

If you want a clear and concise online source for the interwar politics of Germany, then I'll direct you to the modern German federal parliament's links about the topic.

This one has brief descriptions of all the major political parties: https://www.bundestag.de/blob/189776/01b7ea57531a60126da86e2d5c5dbb78/parties_weimar_republic-data.pdf

This one is an overview of the Weimar era: https://www.bundestag.de/en/parliament/history/parliamentarism/weimar

And this one is an overview of the Nazi years: https://www.bundestag.de/en/parliament/history/parliamentarism/third_reich/third_reich/200358

The Harzburg Front was a broad right-wing alliance that supported autocracy over republicanism.
https://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/modern-world-history-1918-to-1980/weimar-germany/the-harzburg-front-of-1931/

Really, the only conservatives who supported the republic at this point were center-right moderates of the Catholic Center Party.

The traditional German imperial colors are black, white, and red, which is what right-wingers raised in defiance of the new German State post-1918. This is why the N.S. incorporated these colors in their flag. Even after the N.S. takeover of 1933, they would still fly the old German Empire flags in combination with the swastika flags. In the famous propaganda film "Triumph of the Will" you can see these flags alternate with swastika flags as the camera is moving down streets.

So what were some of the right-wing groups of the Germanic region at the time? The DNVP? The DVP? The BVP? The DVFP? The Freikorps? The Stahlhelm? The Pan-German League? And why?

As I mentioned before, the N.S. were self-described right-wingers, and held friendly relations with other right-wing groups throughout Western Europe. The most notable of which was the Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right during the Spanish Civil War. This was a proxy war for Germany and Italy to aid the Spanish right-wing nationalists with eradicating the democratically elected Popular Front (the combined forces of all the Spanish left-wing parties) from power--and succeeded after nearly 3 years of fighting.

I give it a zero because it's just a crazy corporate proganda film written by the Coch Brothers, but it is a pretty good piece of history. Years down the road when the Midwest and rust belt is all choking on their own fumes and blood, and eating their inbred autistic children because all the crops have died and there is no "entitlement" programs to help the people who voted away their rights and money this movie will be a snapshot for the world to see how a bunch of fat entitled white angry people lobotomized themselves. A painfully stupid movie that desperately hoped that you slept through history class.

The “republican” and “democratic” parties of Lincoln’s era had almost nothing to do with their modern incarnations. Anyone who buys the basic premise of this film must also be shooting at British Soldiers. Moreover, most of the philosophical beliefs of the modern conservative were, back then, the platform of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY. Not the republicans who Lincoln led. All of the hot button issues of the day like abortion, minority rights, women’s rights, religious rights, etc. etc. we’re agreed upon by both parties because there was no minority constituency to cater to with those issues. It attempt to draw a comparison between Lincoln and Trump, while also drawing a comparison between the Democrats and the Nazi's. It calls Mussolini as WWI veteran, even though he actually deserted the Italian army and avoided joining for as long as possible, demonstrating a miss understanding of the events of the 20th century. It also refers to President Woodrow Wilson as 'the first progressive president' despite the fact formed president Theodore Roosevelt ran against Wilson in the election against Wilson for the Progressive party. Wilson was in fact the third progressive president after Roosevelt and Taft. It also says that Hitlers ousting of Röhm in the night of the long knives as having nothing to do with the fact that he was a homosexual. Although Goebbels has pushed for this ousting beforehand Röhm's homosexuality helped to convince the party to oust him. The attempt to assert that Hitler was not a homophobe in the 1930's, when even the most open minded were, is frankly insulting. The documentary also argues that the Democrats are pro eugenics while also arguing against health care for all. This suggests a double standard to my mind that the apathy toward the poor does not also constitute eugenics in a form. In conclusion the discussion that this provides on political ideology is extremely black and white, it seems to argue that the right is all that is good and the left that is all that is bad, when in reality there is good and bad on both sides. While I personally fell I am left leaning I believe it is important to look at alternative views to challenge what you believe and form a better opinion. That is what drew me to this documentary, but I feel it missed that mark, the feeling it was trying to make me think their way was unavoidable and instead of introducing and interesting discussion it simple made its self difficult to connect with unless you already shared its opinion. Despite the unlikable aspects the historical re-enactments which it uses as padding are enjoyable, particularly the one about the white rose group which is an organisation which deserves more main stream recognition. Until today, I have never watched a documentary by Dinesh D'Souza, and I wish that I could removeYou know that a documentary is doing something wrong when the infamous far right Richard Spencer is the most relatable character in your film. Until today, I have never watched a documentary by Dinesh D'Souza, and I wish that I could remove the 'Until today' from my current sentence, but unfortunately I cannot.

This film is supremely flawed. Some people compare D'Souza to Michael Moore, however whilst Moore's factual evidence goes as far as being skewed (wrong dates, incorrect chronological order), Dinesh feeds the viewers of this film lies. It is actually pretty amusing to try and watch this film sober, the interview with the above mentioned Spencer for example being a particular comic highlight as well as the 'one drop rule ' being too much for the Nazis, but the one scene that had me howling with laughter is the one that suggested that Adolf Hitler was LGBTQ+ friendly, and that seems to be the reason that he was evil?

But most scenes are just plain awkward. There is a enactment of the final days of Sophie Scholl and I feel sorry for her name being in this film, in fact, I feel sorry for Donald Trump having his name in this documentary, in fact, I feel sorry for everybody that has their name in this thing, including some people who I find downright reprehensible. This really pushes the boundaries of what can be taken seriously in film.

Also, D'Souza seems to show a lack of empathy for his characters. He quite frequently insults people for the actions of their fathers. He abuses Hilary Clinton for being taught by a former member of the KKK however he shrugs of Donald Trump's sexual abuse allegations by stating 'We knew that we weren't electing a choir boy. He also blames a victim of the holocaust of being a fascist because he helped empty the properties of certain Jewish people, in fact, the entire Nazi segment comes across as misjudged with D'Souza comparing some of the most vile scientific experiments caused by man with abortion. This is immature.

But ignoring the factual inaccuracy (an understatement) and forgetting the insensitivity towards other human beings, this is a badly made documentary. There are far too many re-enacted scenes, a personal pet peeve that only works in 'Close-Up.' There are too many interviews to maintain interest, D'Souza is not engaging and it is overly preachy. It spends all its time looking into faults with the Democratic party that it doesn't even bother look at the positives of the Republican party.

This is an unnuanced hodge podge of untrue facts, lack of empathy or human emotion and bad filmmaking. I recommend you avoid this flaming turkey of a film that is somehow worse than its ridiculous poster and watch something of interest.
