The film somehow manages to not only fail to address these major problems but exacerbates them to levels I didn't think were possible. Dear Evan Hansen is a morally perverted movie with a repugnant message. Ben Platt (in spite of being a good singer and the original lead in the show) is horribly out of place amongst actors who look way younger than him, which adds an even greater sense of uneasiness to Evan's harrowing actions throughout the story. Finally, the film makes a total mockery of mental health, anxiety, and suicide in one of the most sickening ways I've seen. Without spoiling too much, the story is poor at best, and predatory and sadistic at worst. It's no Cats in that its production design is ok, but the absolutely nauseating message, plot, lead, and treatment of major societal issues makes this adaptation very hard to swallow and makes me question how this disgusting show managed to win a Tony. Giving it anything other than a zero would be a moral failure on my part. Expand

Everything else about the movie was either a huge disappointment or highly uncomfortable. The main character, who we are supposed to root for, plays out like a manipulative sociopath. The love interest is bland and one-dimensional. The best characters are shoved into the background where they can't help save the movie or provide substantial positive messages for grieving, mental health and other teen issues. Instead the message devolves into how it's ok to use deceit instead of hard work to get what you want and it's ok to shame those who question your lies. How did this movie get made?! Expand

Dear Evan Hansen,

Turns out this movie isn't that good after all. Because why would it be?

I wish the different actors will play Evan Hansen, just so the movie will not be controversy.

Sincerely, it lacking the charm of Stephen Chbosky's movies:

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A morally bankrupt and frankly disgusting story, without going into spoilers I just have to say that this is one of the most horrible messages I've ever seen in any genre or medium, if you're watching the movie then you probably know that it's about a suicide of a boy named Conner but that character is done such a horrific disservice and the respect paid to that character is non-existent and the movie actually validates why victims take their own lives with how absolutely evil some of these characters are and how they don't even care about Conner at all!! Do not see this, it's truly awful and offensive and Evan himself is absolutely revolting. Expand

This was one of the most painful movies to sit through. Aside from having the worst premise ever, it also have the most mundane, uninspired, music and lyrics I've ever heard. I needed to up my meds after seeing this.

Obscene on a par with its presumptuousness. What good is a musical when the music has been replaced by power hits identical to each other and rejects even for Disney family movies? What is the use of displaying the Radiohead poster when they too have replaced, in the turn of the millennium, guitars with synths and the band with solo careers? What is the use of listing any form of diversity dear to SJWs? Why such a horrible miscasting? Julianne Moore is 60 years old, the age for roles as a grandmother, not as a mother, Amy Adams is at least 10 kilos overweight, Kaitlyn Dever is not credible as a charming girl, Ben Platt's fragility is of a unique dislike. The adolescent discomfort was extraordinarily described by Van Sant in his "Trilogy of Death", long before Chazelle who is as much overrated as Chbosky.

Ужасно, рекомендую посмотреть в кинотеатрах что-нибудь получше.
Худшее, что происходит в этом году.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me preface by saying that I was never a fan of the story, but I thought maybe they would’ve changed the plot to fit a wider audience — that did not happen. This story was still about the horrible manipulation of a grieving family by a white kid that takes advantage of someone dying by suicide. Yes, that is literally what this is about. I honestly can’t believe it got made, and I don’t think a story like this should be given a voice. There were so many things wrong with this movie besides the main plot. I was so confused as to why Evan had a crush on Zoe, when she was so entitled and one-dimensional. Alana’s character had so much more depth than Zoe’s, but of course, the white girl is the main love interest, because that’s the way it’s always been folks! Evan and Zoe’s relationship just felt so forced and wrong. Then, they take away the song the one Hispanic Actor (Danny Pino) was supposed to have? Them giving Alana a bigger role is the only attempt they made when it came to “diversity” in this film. It felt like they just went “Make this person of color’s role bigger, but also make the other two people of color’s roles smaller — because we can’t cut the white character’s roles.” This movie was supposedly trying to bring mental health awareness, but the story itself was just not the way to do it. Someone dies by suicide, yet the main character uses that to his advantage to ‘get the girl’? It teaches the wrong message. I mean, absolutely nothing good comes from death by suicide…but this movie makes it seem otherwise. In the end, you learn almost nothing about Connor, and somehow the movie tries to make you feel like Evan Hansen did something good in his honor? As someone with debilitating depression (among other mental health diagnoses) this movie was a slap in the face. I don’t get how people can look past the horrific story and actually like this film. The music is the only good part of this entire movie, and when you take the plot into consideration, the music is ruined. I didn’t think I’d have such an adverse reaction to this movie. I went in with an open mind, and read zero reviews beforehand. I just can’t get past how terrible the main plot is. I was so uncomfortable the entire time I was watching this, and the movie just seemed to drag on and on. I wouldn’t recommend anyone with a mental health illness watch this sad excuse for mental health awareness; as it may be triggering to see. If you are okay with minimum effort diversity, and can look past the disgusting storyline, then this movie is for you. Expand
