The film somehow manages to not only fail to address these major problems but exacerbates them to levels I didn't think were possible. Dear Evan Hansen is a morally perverted movie with a repugnant message. Ben Platt (in spite of being a good singer and the original lead in the show) is horribly out of place amongst actors who look way younger than him, which adds an even greater sense of uneasiness to Evan's harrowing actions throughout the story. Finally, the film makes a total mockery of mental health, anxiety, and suicide in one of the most sickening ways I've seen. Without spoiling too much, the story is poor at best, and predatory and sadistic at worst. It's no Cats in that its production design is ok, but the absolutely nauseating message, plot, lead, and treatment of major societal issues makes this adaptation very hard to swallow and makes me question how this disgusting show managed to win a Tony. Giving it anything other than a zero would be a moral failure on my part. Expand

Everything else about the movie was either a huge disappointment or highly uncomfortable. The main character, who we are supposed to root for, plays out like a manipulative sociopath. The love interest is bland and one-dimensional. The best characters are shoved into the background where they can't help save the movie or provide substantial positive messages for grieving, mental health and other teen issues. Instead the message devolves into how it's ok to use deceit instead of hard work to get what you want and it's ok to shame those who question your lies. How did this movie get made?! Expand

Dear Evan Hansen,

Turns out this movie isn't that good after all. Because why would it be?

I wish the different actors will play Evan Hansen, just so the movie will not be controversy.

Sincerely, it lacking the charm of Stephen Chbosky's movies:

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A morally bankrupt and frankly disgusting story, without going into spoilers I just have to say that this is one of the most horrible messages I've ever seen in any genre or medium, if you're watching the movie then you probably know that it's about a suicide of a boy named Conner but that character is done such a horrific disservice and the respect paid to that character is non-existent and the movie actually validates why victims take their own lives with how absolutely evil some of these characters are and how they don't even care about Conner at all!! Do not see this, it's truly awful and offensive and Evan himself is absolutely revolting. Expand

The cast knocks this one out of the park once again! Ben was spectacular as Evan. You definitely need to see this and for your own opinions.

There’s lots of criticism about the plot, because the whole story revolves around the lie that Evan tells. But, life is nuanced and people are imperfect; is ridiculous to expect films to have only perfect and unflawed characters.

I didn’t get ANY of the subtle notes that the critics felt his acting gave a maliciousness to his character. I think it was a well made movie and gave a proper ending that people can feel happy with. I think it’s more or less a plot subject that makes people uncomfortable. Suicide, depression, and mental illness is no joking matter and this movie does a well job of bringing it to light. Its a quite poignant film, although its also fairly cheesy or corny as its a musical but I felt it handled the themes relatively well overall. Many people criticise the main performance as the actor (Ben Platt) is clearly much older than the character is meant to be - I agree, that is clearly the case and it is a bit distracting but it didn't entirely spoil the film for me because I could overlook it and concentrate on the plot at hand (ignoring the age issue). Yes, I'd recommend this film, if the issue with Ben Platt doesn't put you off too much. I thought it's got a good mix of singing based scenes and 'regular' dialogue based scenes and its somewhat thought provoking, although I imagine people with no experience of social anxiety may feel its a little long winded and perhaps a bit self indulgent. Beware of critics who appear unfamiliar with the ability of passive teens to be drawn into doing things they would never set out to do, a teen’s ability act in the moment oblivious of what will happen next, and the comfort level among many to discuss treatment with peers. Folks who don’t like the film also appear to have missed many of the details: they criticize the fact that Jared is mean to Evan when he is supposed to be his friend— seemingly clueless that he most definitely is not a friend, as Jared makes clear. Ben Platt is 27. Perhaps I am too old to care because I don’t. He good in the role. Expand

As for the criticism around Ben's age, he is only 28 for goodness sake (and I assume 27 when this was filmed), in the 80s this age group always played teenagers in film and TV, anyone talking rubbish about this is just doing it for dramatic reasons, he was still convincing as Evan and nothing felt wrong or out of place to me, plus Ben did it for the fans because most people see Ben as Evan and for that I thank him :)

A lot of users are saying that they dislike the main character, but throughout the film we see how he is pushed into his lies by his own insecurities and by trying to comfort the Connor’s family. Watch the movie and you’ll instantly understand why telling the truth wasn’t really an option for him in the beginning, taking in his personality and life. Also, personally, I think that Ben Platt really looks like a high schooler for most of the scenes (there are one or two where the illusion slips), and his and the rest of the cast’s performances are absolutely stellar. The music is done really well and I loved every second of it. I cried a little during an especially touching scene with Connor’s dad. Please dont listen to the haters and just watch it. Ben Platt returns to his Tony-winning role as a high schooler with psychological issues. His letter to himself gets misconstrued in ways that cause great pain for him and others. You have to get over his age (he’s 28 playing 17), because Platt is still mesmerizing. His singing is packed with emotion and depth, while his performance is complex and compelling. Almost all of the songs are plaintive, sad tearjerkers. The themes around social media and other teen issues become the dominant story. Director Stephen Chbosky presents the songs in a straightforward manner (sometimes cutaways to supporting events), but no flashy re-imagining. Even though I saw the musical on stage, my tendency is not to compare them, but the theatre version seemed more fun and dramatic, while this film leans heavily on the teen angst. As a result, this is a too-long tearfest with some strong moments and a lot of message. Expand

I don't know why there is such negativity about this film. It has constant tension as we see Evan make a huge mistake and plunge into a morally ambiguous world where his bad action has many positive outcomes. The songs are fantastic and the music numbers are well-directed. I did think it was a bit too long -- some of the songs seem like asides that didn't add up to anything for me. Obscene on a par with its presumptuousness. What good is a musical when the music has been replaced by power hits identical to each other and rejects even for Disney family movies? What is the use of displaying the Radiohead poster when they too have replaced, in the turn of the millennium, guitars with synths and the band with solo careers? What is the use of listing any form of diversity dear to SJWs? Why such a horrible miscasting? Julianne Moore is 60 years old, the age for roles as a grandmother, not as a mother, Amy Adams is at least 10 kilos overweight, Kaitlyn Dever is not credible as a charming girl, Ben Platt's fragility is of a unique dislike. The adolescent discomfort was extraordinarily described by Van Sant in his "Trilogy of Death", long before Chazelle who is as much overrated as Chbosky.

Well, I don’t know what everyone was smoking cause I think the film is a near perfect film adaptation of the play

It’s not perfect. Otherwise I’d be giving it 5 stars, 4 songs were removed and replaced by a new song and a reprise for it. Initially, it hit me a bit wrong but I actually really liked the song. However, the reprise didn’t need to be there.

The biggest mistake the film makes is removing the song “Anybody Got a Map?” Because it perfectly sets up the stage for both families. But, the film is far from a disaster. Ben Platt gives a stellar, heart breaking performance and everyone else does a fantastic job in their respective roles as well. For me, it’s a win. I would love to see it again in the theater and I’ll definitely be buying the Blu-ray. For any purists out there, you’ve been warned - there are changes. But I think they mostly work. Mostly…

I am also a huge fan of Stephen Chbosky, as well as Justin Paul, so I had high hopes. With that being said, the movie fell flat on nearly every aspect necessary for a good movie/musical. The music was not memorable (the singing was amazing, don't get me wrong) and sometimes felt arbitrary. I found it difficult to support the main character as he continued to make one bad decision after another. And not only did the main character make decisions that were hard to get behind, but so did the supporting characters, leaving you no one to root for. At the end of the day, the movie was interesting, and kept my attention, but I probably would not watch it again. I kept on waiting for the "big reveal" to happen, and when it did, it was unsatisfying. If you're bored one night, give this a shot, but don't expect anything mind-blowing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, the movie is bad. The adaption of this amazing Broadway musical is just really, really pedestrian. The songs and performances continue to be great though. But the movie itself is as bad as The Greatest Showman, which is not surprising. Having said that, many reviews in here take the hate they have towards Evan and apply that to everything else. You can and should be able to see the qualities of any movies despite how horrible some characters are. Evan isn't a poorly developed character; he is simply a bad person that happens to suffer from anxiety. This is a movie about a bad person. It just also happens to be a bad movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me preface by saying that I was never a fan of the story, but I thought maybe they would’ve changed the plot to fit a wider audience — that did not happen. This story was still about the horrible manipulation of a grieving family by a white kid that takes advantage of someone dying by suicide. Yes, that is literally what this is about. I honestly can’t believe it got made, and I don’t think a story like this should be given a voice. There were so many things wrong with this movie besides the main plot. I was so confused as to why Evan had a crush on Zoe, when she was so entitled and one-dimensional. Alana’s character had so much more depth than Zoe’s, but of course, the white girl is the main love interest, because that’s the way it’s always been folks! Evan and Zoe’s relationship just felt so forced and wrong. Then, they take away the song the one Hispanic Actor (Danny Pino) was supposed to have? Them giving Alana a bigger role is the only attempt they made when it came to “diversity” in this film. It felt like they just went “Make this person of color’s role bigger, but also make the other two people of color’s roles smaller — because we can’t cut the white character’s roles.” This movie was supposedly trying to bring mental health awareness, but the story itself was just not the way to do it. Someone dies by suicide, yet the main character uses that to his advantage to ‘get the girl’? It teaches the wrong message. I mean, absolutely nothing good comes from death by suicide…but this movie makes it seem otherwise. In the end, you learn almost nothing about Connor, and somehow the movie tries to make you feel like Evan Hansen did something good in his honor? As someone with debilitating depression (among other mental health diagnoses) this movie was a slap in the face. I don’t get how people can look past the horrific story and actually like this film. The music is the only good part of this entire movie, and when you take the plot into consideration, the music is ruined. I didn’t think I’d have such an adverse reaction to this movie. I went in with an open mind, and read zero reviews beforehand. I just can’t get past how terrible the main plot is. I was so uncomfortable the entire time I was watching this, and the movie just seemed to drag on and on. I wouldn’t recommend anyone with a mental health illness watch this sad excuse for mental health awareness; as it may be triggering to see. If you are okay with minimum effort diversity, and can look past the disgusting storyline, then this movie is for you. Expand
