Just because it is handcam doesn't mean continuity can be cast aside. And The Blair Witch Godzilla aproject is a very good description of this movie. Home made feel footage but with a monster terrorizing a city. And the fact that you have dismissed all their opinions and pronounced that they can't be critics since they don't agree with you is just absurd. Now. I knew what this movie would entail before i got there. Hand held cam style footage of a group of people in the aftermath of a city destroyed bya monster. And i got just that. But it wasn't at all entertaining. Firstly, the only reason the story continued was one guys illogical and unreasonable need to go BACK into the city. I wonder how this will turn out? Couldn't they have stuck with a survival theme? Running from the monster to get out of the city? Instead the monster turns into a foot note in the plot. The camera work was bad. That is all i can say. Just because it's a handycam doesn't mean it can't be pointed at interesting things now and then. Unless one of the miriad plot points that were neglected explanation was that the camera man has a foot fetish. I lost count of the number of times we catch a glimpse of the monster only to have the camera pan and leave it hovering just off screen. Why is the guy carrying the camera to document this stuff if all he films is being scrambling down a roof? Just simple changes like having him pause to let others by and taking that time to record the monster doing something. ANYTHING. The jarring quality of the footage sent 2 of my mates out due to motion sickness. The shacky-cam gimmick became tedious and unnecessary after 10 minutes. The overly long intro did nothing to convince me of the important relationship around which the movie subsequently revolves. I honestly didn't care whether they achieved their goal or not. Nothing is ever answered about the monster. There were some positives. A few good scenes in the streets where we get to see that the monster is nearby and a genuine threat. Only then did i feel an urgency about their running. I can't get scared if i don't know what is happening. It showed that frantic shacky cam can work in short bursts, but not for a whole film. A better choice would have been either a first person perspective, seeing what they see, or film by a news crew, getting both the panic and realism whilst still SEEING enough to feel involved. If you have a phobia of shoes or pavements, you'll be scared out of your seat. Expand

It would have been a great movie if they didnt have so much of the camcorder thing. I got sick watching the movie and half of the time I was annoyed by screaming and cutoffs. Poor quality movie...

It looked interesting six months before, but I wasn't sure about it when it actually came out. Of course, I just came back from seeing it and not only is it the first 4-star film of the year (to me), it's also a classic piece of cinema that should be looked back on in a very positive light in the future. I actually became connected with the characters within the short time frame of the film, which was nice to discover. The sheer intensity and amazing pseudorealism of it all really made it fall together. There are a few tiny things that one could nitpick about, but even then only three. A truly great film. Expand

This film was near on perfect the characters were introduced well, the action scenes were amazing. The monster had enough coverage and every loss of a character made you feel for the others left behind. It was the quiet scenes like in the subway that provided the most emotional moments and the silence in some parts provided such a tense atmosphere in the cinema. The story was spot on, it didn't need to have an explanation of what the monster was or where it came from as the characters couldn't of possibly found out that information and I'm sure if a monster was chasing you the main thing you would be trying to do would be staying alive not . investigating! The ending was excellent and the skip to the old video was such a good idea. go see it! Expand

Cloverfield delivered on action, suspense, dark humor, amazing visual effects, and an extreme fondness for the characters. What held it back in a few places was the camerawork. While the hand-held camerawork made the movie that much better, I wanted to see the monster a bit more after it was revealed. While the suspense of waiting to see it was great, it felt like they were really milking the amateur camerawork in a few places. That aside, I loved Cloverfield. It really bothers me that people are so disturbed by the camera. Is our generation that inept that they need to be spoon fed every detail of a movie for it to be entertaining?! This movie was supposed to evoke your imagination. Yes the It really bothers me that people are so disturbed by the camera. Is our generation that inept that they need to be spoon fed every detail of a movie for it to be entertaining?! This movie was supposed to evoke your imagination. Yes the camera was super shaky....I'd like to see an amateur camera person that has missiles flying all around them and a 25 story monster killing everything in sight shoot that with a steady hand. This movie is supposed to be shot from a realistic point of view. And how much more real can you get from a random bloke on the street running for his life? I would've liked a little explanation about the monster but at the same time that's what made it so exciting for me. What the f*ck was that thing? Where did it come from? It got my brain thinking of all these crazy scenarios which made it so much more fun to watch. The whole movie for me was just so real seeming. For me it completely captured the chaos and craziness that probably would've ensued had something like that happen. I loved it and wouldn't have done it any other way. Bravo. Expand

Excellent approach for this movie! It is necessary to apply this type of shooting matter to bring up this impact. The goal for this shooting style is to portrait as documentary movie which is captured by civilian rather by some great director.

Or anywhere else than watching the movie. If you cut out most of the party, and the most of the scenes aimed at feet and mid-sections, it might have rated a lot higher. It is quite consuming, as long as you suppress the notion that people who are in this much fear of their life would most likely switch off the camera well before some of the events which occur. Where the movie falls short is in describing where the beast came from, what exactly were the small ones accompanying it (were they spawn or genetically unrelated and just along for the ride) and what happened afterward. There's a fine line between mystery that is intriguing and mystery that is directatorially short sighted. Expand

I thought the camera was a problem in a movie like the Bourne Ultimatum. It didn't bother me much if at all in this movie. I hate jittery camerawork, but found this film less jarring than that found in the Greengrass Bourne films and Flight 93. At least Cloverfield actually has a reason. I loved that this movie nods to the monster genre--the post-9/11 footage I hate jittery camerawork, but found this film less jarring than that found in the Greengrass Bourne films and Flight 93. At least Cloverfield actually has a reason. I loved that this movie nods to the monster genre--the post-9/11 footage format is what makes it inventive. I don't think the dialogue was meant to be great--the opening 20 minutes seemed to be the writers poking fun at themselves: a send up of Felicity. There's a little thing 'sophisticated' reviewers don't seem to realize--movies, fiction have this little thing called "a suspension of disbelief." I find it disturbing that the negative reviewers like Manohla Dargis, so disdainful of these "stupid, shallow" (fictional) characters were proud to actually write in their reviews that they were rooting for their deaths. I may not be as intelligent as the New York Times, but I got the impression from some reviews that if a young New Yorker isn't portrayed as intelligent (in a genre movie of all places) then they deserve to die. Heartwarming. Expand

Wow, what an ignorant -First of all, Adam H, that's a pretty harsh criticism to be making of the people that didn't like this movie. I guess if someone didn't enjoy it they need to "grow up" cuz they're nothing but kids. Wow, what an ignorant statement. -And for those who say plot and meaning don't matter, you're absolutely correct, but the problem is this movie did try to have meaning, like with its visual references to Sept 11. So don't tell me meaning's not important in a movie if the very movie you're reviewing tries to be an allegory of major historical events we're ALL familiar with. The problem with Cloverfield was that there was no real REASON why they had these references to 9/11: what point were they trying to make, because, as Wing M pointed out, nothing gets resolved. Were they just showing off with their use of allegory? -Also, I don't care for shaky-camera action as long as it's done artfully and with purpose. In this case it was, but there's such a thing as taking it too far: the director was just showing off by trying to give his movie a distinct visual style (and some scenes were just so obscurely presented), but it's been done before (Bourne Ultimatum, for example). -The characters were hollow and unbelievable. No, I'm not being randomly bias by bashing every aspect of this movie. My proof: what about that Marlena girl who, from the very start of the movie doesn't seem to care for anyone, suddenly gets the bright idea to go along with the group to find the main lead's girlfriend? Yeah, very realistic: I'll just risk my life for people I don't like. -The humour wasn't at all witty, except some people seemed to find the guy who held the camera to be funny because he was so pathetic. Oh, and the first 20 or so minutes were stretched out to tediousness: most of those scenes or dialog wasn't needed, and the attempt at character development fell far short. -This movie doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be, and trying to bend genres isn't helping them: is it a love story, because it feels too empty to be a love story? Is it a political allegory? Is it a monster movie? Probably, because that's what it ends up being at the end, even though I was looking forward to something deeper. And saying that it's all these things doesn't help because the genres are never explored to their fullest since the movie is so short. -And I went into the theater really wanting to see this movie, having lined up 2 hours beforehand on opening day, so don't tell me I'm bias in any way. They are not suppose to please your every need. The shaky camera was a perfect effect on the movie, because for one, It makes us, the viewers, become more envolved with the movie, as if we were running from the monster and taping it ourselves. Sure, the first 30 minutes were not as exciting as the rest of the film. Get over it, what are they suppose to do, just put you in the middle of the attack and not explain the background of the day? The ending was a cliffhanger, and if you don't like that, then i really don't suggest this movie for you, but you should of seen it coming because one of the producers, J.J. Abrahms happens to be the king of cliffhangers. I happen to think the cliff hanger ending is perfect, It leaves it open for a sequel, which is in talks. So people that rate this movie 0's and 1's because of the cliffhanger, or shaky camera, please watch some other movies from Blockbuster, and learn to appreciate that Cloverfield has its own unique genre, which is very good. Some say this movie did not deserve a 0, claming that the "shaky-camera" is the decisive reason why people give it poor ratings. Thus, I will clarify exactly why this movie should go straight to the top of the Worst Movies of All Time list. For starters, the script was possibly written by a fourth grader; in fact, I might actually appreciate it if it had been. Second, nothing was resolved - at all. Even things that happened were for the most part left in complete obscurity. The Onion said that was the amazing part of the film... let's throw back to basic English plot lessons. There's nothing wrong with leaving things open to interpretation, but the entire movie? Third... there were explosions... big deal. Aside from its few moments, there were times that I actually forgot I was in the theatre because I completely lost interest. Even the first Lord of the Rings, with its endless walking, was more entertaining than the first 30 minutes of Cloverfield. In the end, though, Cloverfield did produce one exciting phenomenon that I had never before seen: people demanding their money back. Expand

I found the intimacy of the hand-held camera effect a viseral pleasure -- as if I was walking (or running) through the movie rather than just watching it. While it's a cliche to compare a movie to a roller coaster ride, the experience was very much like the fun of a good ride. I also enjoyed the dry humor. But when I read the reviews prior to seeing it, I was expecting something similar to the inane torture-porn movies that have come out as of late (Hostel, Saw 64, etc.) with emotionally stunted 20-somethings getting torn to bits. But I came out of the movie from a truly unique experience that none of the negative reviewers seemed to grasp. This is something brand new. The effects are spectacular and are grounded in real life. They are right in pointing out that the characters don't get beyond much yelling and oh-my-god-ing, but I think it's realistic. I think many people were trying to search for some kind of meaning out of it, some kind of deeper metaphor, but I actually like the fact that you are not given much information at all, it's all still a mystery after seeing it. Give it a chance, do pop some dramamine (the movie didn't effect me, but better safe than sorry) and then have fun. There hasn't been a heart-pounding movie that gets your adrenaline up like this in a long time. Expand

There is Really awesome monster movie. Can't see how anyone would have a problem with it unless they don't like monster movies in general or they are 12 years old and only want to see the monster kill people and destroy things. There is plenty enough character development so that you care about the people you see in danger and they don't do stupid things that normal people would not do (i.e., split up and separate when monsters are lurking about) and act realistically (note: when they go on their mission to find the girl they know exactly where she is although the audience misses that part of the phone message she leaves). Sure, some of the characters, especially the cameraman, are non-too-bright, but so are most people in life sad to say. The point is that none of the characters are the pathetic stupid idiots who populate most monster movies. Also, if you do watch the movie be sure to pay close attention to the closing Coney Island beach shot. If you are watching carefully you will see something occur for a split second that explains a lot. Expand

I stood in the back so I was glad it wasn't too long. This movie is Blair witch meets Godzilla narrated by a nerdy guy helping his friend try to save his girlfriend. If I actually believed this guy loved her then it might have worked. Special effects were OK but not enough monster. Personally I felt this film could've been a lot better if it used traditional filmmaking techniques - you barely see the creature(s?) and there is no soundtrack so much of the drama is missing. Has all the elements for a sequel which could be much better and answer a few questions. I'm glad to see monsters making a comeback instead of psychos like SAW. If I want psychos I can just turn on the news if I want giant creatures causing destruction I go to the movies so for that reason I gave it a 6. Expand

Though unexplained here, unlike in The Host, a monster appears in an urban area, this time Manhattan. The movie is presented as a video being shot by one party goer who has been assigned to video interview those at a going away party. When catastrophe hits, the videgoer is forced to wander about outside with others, thus rendering the video even more frequently jerky, and at times, not horizontal as the camera is dropped or fallen with. And in an interesting juxtaposition, because the video tape being used had previous images on it, you also see interspersed a record of better times. The movie is like Blair Witch meets Godzilla in New York City; quite implausible, but very exciting. Unlike Blair Witch, which I found to be totally uninteresting (I didn't care for any character, and as a group, found them all to act like some moronic cult on a mission), this movie dealt with a group of more or less normal yuppies who were forced to react to their disturbed environment. This is a very creative and entertaining movie, although those looking for super state-of-the-art technical effects or spectacular color images will be disappointed. Expand

I love JJ Abrams work and think his Mission Impossible had been much more a superior movie than the other two. I think Lost is a fantastic show. Matt Reeves is a great director as well. I just think this effort was off the mark from what we are accustomed two from the two. Instead of a well written movie about such a great an event as a monster/alien destroying the city of New York, so soon after what had happened there in the past, we get a bad love story dipped in CGI eye-candy. If a monster REALLY did attack New York, and you were at a party, what would YOU experience? How would YOU react? If you had a loved one in danger would you run away or would you go save them? Special effects were minimal as LIFE needs no special effects. This movie was about reality, not glitz and glamour and special effects. (minus the 100 foot tall beastie of course)... If I could give this move a negative score I would. Camera work was so bad even in the non-action parts (like at the party) I almost threw up in the first 15 minutes of the movie due to motion sickness, the movie went downhill from there. I If I could give this move a negative score I would. Camera work was so bad even in the non-action parts (like at the party) I almost threw up in the first 15 minutes of the movie due to motion sickness, the movie went downhill from there. I understand the camera concept but even if you are running or scared you're telling me you can't hold a camera semi-still so we could actually see what was going on instead of just getting sick from the blurring back and forth. And in the non-action parts why the heck could this guy not look at people's faces instead of the camera being pointed at their feet or only half their face. Bad acting, no real story, NOTHING in this movie was done right, EXCEPT the credits and those were only good because it meant the movie was over. Not only do I wish I could get my $6.25 back (luckily I went to the late show so it was not $9.00) but I think someone should reimburse me for wasting 1 1/2 hours of my life. If I want to pay to get motion sick I will go to an amusement park at least there you will find lovable characters and loads of entertainment, two things this movie lacked. I did not care if the characters lived or not, in fact I was hoping they would all die so the movie would end. The fact that there is no story proves the writer is not really a writer, he could not even think of a plausible reason this monster attacked, where it was from, how to kill it, NOTHING. Other movie goers were as confused and disappointed as I was based on their after movie chatter. On guy asked "what just happened" and I said "I'll tell you, you wasted $6.25 and 1 1/2 hours of your life". Another movie goer said "there is 1 1/2 of my life wasted that I will never get back". Also I never knew cheap handheld home video cameras had night vision, professional style lighting and such AMAZING and long lasting video and battery life. I could go on and on about how awful and completely retarded this movie is but it's not even worth talking about honestly. Please, if you feel the need to waste $9.00, just send me the money and stay home, don't waste your time on this movie. Expand

The only reason you shouldn't like this movie is if you weren't warned before going to see it that the camera is really shaky. Other than that, I believe that Cloverfield is definitely the best monster that has been created in a long time.

When I watched the movie the other day, I couldn't believe that the whole movie was through a camera. The movie was a mix between the Blair Witch Project and Godzilla. The movie was a mix between the Blair Witch Project and Godzilla. This is one movie that I actually called, emailed, and spoke to co-workers and family/friends and told them to not even waste their money on. The ending of the movie was pointless. Pointless to the point on why the Camera was needed. Sometimes when I leave a theater, I hear people talking or something, NO. everyone left in COMPLETE SILENCE!!! And lookin @ the Box Office reviews, I cant believe, that this movie grossed $41M . I know there are A LOT of disappointed moviegoers... Expand

Exciting, and everything Blair Witch SHOULD have been. It amazes me that the price of admission (theoretically) would be the same for a piece of turd like Blair Witch and this movie. Don't over-think it, because you get very few answers. And the way the movie ends is not very satisfying on any level. But I commend the movie makers for putting us into the middle of an explosive ride and making it damn entertaining while it lasts. Expand

Very compelling up until the last 15 minutes or so, with some of the most clever special effects I've ever seen. It's worth admission for the sequence that starts in the middle of a military shoot-'em-up, and ends in a subway tunnel.

I also agree on this being one of the worst movies ever produced. Horrible camera work (even for a handheld) horrible acting, no plot, no background, no anything that a good or even decent movie should have. Horrible camera work (even for a handheld) horrible acting, no plot, no background, no anything that a good or even decent movie should have. When the movie was over, everyone just sat there. When the credits began to roll, the groans and complaints started. I'd like a refund for this movie because I too feel cheated. Expand

The trailer tells the entire story - with very little else to learn. I found this film to be a complete rip off. I wanted to love it however I left unfulfilled. If you like "Blair Witch" then you will like this film.

That was the first time I had ever left in the middle of a movie. The idea of watching from the characters' viewpoint sounded like a great idea, but when the entire movie is shot with shakiness and rapid movement, its kinda hard to enjoy when suffering from motion sickness. My popcorn bag almost became my barf bag. Would I like to have finished the movie? Yes, but I'll wait for the DVD. Hopefully it will be easier to cope with on a smaller screen. Expand
