Jarring, erratic, nausea-inducing camera movement, annoying characters, and completely unrealistic despite being a 'reality' movie. By the end of the movie, you'll be left wondering why you made yourself undergo 80 minutes of complete nonsense. To make things even worse, nothing about this movie was even remotely scary. The previews were better when one truly didn't know what was going on. That was its charm; had they given the cheap looking monster away beforehand, no one would have seen this piece of cinematic trash. Expand

Hollywood does NOT need to explain everything...sometimes, the scariest things are the ones you don't see, and in this case, the unknowns (where did the monster come from? was the military able to beat it? what the hell was that thing that fell into the water @ the very end, and how did that tie into the creature?) allowed me to use my imagination to fill in the blanks. What kind of cam-corder was that? I want one. It's tougher than a cockroach. It survives drops, helicopter crashes, monster thrashes and electromagnetic pulses from a nuke! 3. Beth was an alien. It's remarkable how she didn't bleed to death after being impaled on re-bar and had full use of her arm and shoulder in that last scene. My cousin wouldn't stop filming the fiasco, saying someone would want to see it. I don't understand why people expect a movie to have a classic movie plot. Movie plot shit never happens in real life granted neither does a big lizard destroying New York, but maybe people should do their research about the point of the hand held camera and the aimless plot, which in retrospect wasn't really that bad. Many find the film lax in the plot department - and they'd be right. But it's not a film about "plot", it's about a moment - an increasingly hopeless moment involving bystanders of a situation completely out of their understanding or control. The camera-work can be polarizing at first (or near impossible for some to cope with), but I found myself highly immersed in the movie thanks to it. I thought the film was an enjoyable experience, and recommend it for anyone in need of some giant-monster with their action. Expand

And it was except for the camerawork. Such a shame. In their zeal to make it realistic, the audience is subjected to near torture. Most of the time the action is at a 45 degree angle. If they wanted to make it that realistic, why not just have the hero drop the camera and show a curb for an hour? Makes about as much sense. This would have been a 10 if only they showed a bit of amatuerish camerawork to give the idea, they film it more or less normally. Expand

*Some spoilers... but trust me, you aren't missing much* "Cloverfield" offers no more than its amazing trailer - no more thrills, no more clarification, no more... well, anything. Except the face of the monster, which, because of the *Some spoilers... but trust me, you aren't missing much* "Cloverfield" offers no more than its amazing trailer - no more thrills, no more clarification, no more... well, anything. Except the face of the monster, which, because of the camerawork, isn't clear. What begins as a story that seems decidedly human quickly devolves into cliches (the lost love, the frantic search for lost love, the panicky, bewildered looks of those in danger, the poor decision making skills of self-appointed leaders) that become more tiresome when you realize that The Camera Is Still Rolling; that is, the poor sap who's following his friends around during a rampage is still holding a camera. (This plot hole is remedied in one dumbshit line: "The world will need to know what happened!" or something equally asinine). Drop it and run, pal. Speaking of the camerawork, the POV is interesting for the first twenty minutes, but becomes tedious as the plot and "near escapes" become progressively more preposterous. The principal characters survive multiple attacks: one seems to be impaled (but lives), three are in a helicopter crash - and survive!, and two watch a friend devoured alive... but the monster leaves them alone. All this would be made palpable if the acting was clever, witty, or pulled more than just Acting 101 grab-bag crap, but it doesn't. From the cameraman's incessant "What's going on?! Where's Rob going?!" to the farewells before the ending (which are hilariously awful, cherry-picking from The Blair Witch Project), the actors' "spontaneity" is never fully convincing. This film was a huge letdown. Expand

Before watching this film I had no idea what it was about apart from the fact that it involved a monster at some point; I missed all the virals, trailers, so perhaps I will be reviewing this from a different point of view to others.... It's a truly brilliant film,, good acting (perhaps a bit too over the top at times) but most of all was how gripping it was and how it held your attention. Yes the camera scenes aren't perfect, but they add an eerie realism to the overall experience. I quite liked how the characters were people you couldn't really identify or want to know...what the movie does is show that all types of people, whether we like them or not, unify in a crisis. The parallels to 9/11 are there for all to see, and it's an ingenious piece of film. Just watch and enjoy Expand

I can not believe the insatiable stupidity of the so called directors and producers of this junk, by filming the whole show through a cell phone. Give me a break. Not to mention the screen play writing. It reminded me of a dog in the yard chasing its tail, started no where, getting no where, and going no where. This is painfully obvious with the main actor and his limited lines of "Bob, Bob, Bob." One other thing to add for this waste of time of a so called movie, if you have any form of Epilepsy as I do, please do not even begin to watch it, as from the insatiable stupidity of the so called directors and the constant bouncing around of the film is subject to set off a seizure. I must admit though that the sales pitch was pretty good, as it duped me into wasting my money on this DVD. I would have been better off ordering a pizza, at least I would have enjoyed the pizza. The opening party scene is forgettable and doesn't really do anything to give the main players more than one dimension. However, once the action explodes...um, literally, 'Cloverfield' becomes a fascinating experiment, despite the fact that it's also a bit frustrating. I'm not sure that the actors truly sold a significant "I'm here! This is happening!" perspective. Rather than implanting an impression of realism and reactive instinct, I found the performances to be too self conscious and modulated, more theater than verismo. The premise is fantastic. The 'things left unseen' approach works for most of the film. And, I think the action was accessible enough to carry the film through the lulls. Whether the 'camcorder' photography remains a novel or gimmicky approach, it's a bit of a toss up. Despite the flaws, including a deep lack of story momentum, I found the film entertaining. And, that is that! Expand

And also setup the whole plot of the story. I'm guessing the people who said there was no plot didn't watch carefully enough or listen. The plot actually begins to develop after the attack begins, and from that point the plot is very simple they set out to rescue beth. I personally wouldn't have done this if i were him i would have got the heck on a chopper and escaped the area. The ending of the movie is to be expected for this genre, as we all know there was a part two for the Blair witch project and Godzilla. And i've also heard abroad that if could be a second movie in the works. Movies like these you don't want to rush, i also liked how everything was kept secret until the movie actually came out. I hate those movies previews when they have to show everything . As for the origins of the creature its possible the creature was lying dormant this whole time until it was awoken possibly from that oil tanker? Maybe they were drilling deep for oil and woke it up? Anyways if you haven't seen this movie yet i urge you to buy the DVD or seek a copy my some other means and watch it you won't be disappointed. Expand

Once again (like in War of the Worlds) some ill conceived group of people, who are so unlikable, air-headed and preposterously good looking, you could swear they were from another movie, is thrown at the audience as if to say: 'Hi folks, these are your protagonists for this evening's entertainment. We apologize for any inconvenience.' Why do we once again have to suffer through the most impressive collection of jawdroppingly dumb yuppies, whose existence somehow seems to revolve around spewing the most vapid conversation around like if it was a sport. Cloverfield has some very impressive and convincing CGI, but when are we finally going to get treated to this art-form in a movie together with a great story and on par dialog? Transformers, another CGI wonder, was nearly unwatchable for the exact same reason. I realize that it's a cliché when I say that this movie could and should have been SO much better. Not in gritty realism, it covers that bit quite well (although I would have preferred some sort of mix of steady-cam and not-steady-cam footage, but rather through a decent plot, a decent (and relevant) build-up and a feasible script. The premise of the camcorder being found in what was ONCE known as Central Park led me to an int eresting conclusion that throughly destroys the intended plot. The military referred to what was called Operating Hammerdown. I can only surmise that this involved some VERY SERIOUS weaponry. Perhaps a small yield nuclear warhead was used. The fact that area was ONCE KNOWN as Central Park lets me know that the area was completely and utterly devasted!. If this were the case then someone PLEASE tell me HOW in the world did the Camcorder survive? High-yield fuel air explosive weapons would have melted the thing and a nuclear explosion would have vaporized it. The premise of a camcorder surving wih perfect picture and sound recordings is absurd. Before you go and say that it was restored then why are there no gaps in continuity? Surely some of the action would have been irretrievable. NUFF SAID! Expand

Cloverfield was a big dissapointment for me. The story begins with a farewell party which is extremely dull and gives no insight into the plot. You actually wonder if you came to the correct film. Although it gets much better when the actual Cloverfield was a big dissapointment for me. The story begins with a farewell party which is extremely dull and gives no insight into the plot. You actually wonder if you came to the correct film. Although it gets much better when the actual action seems to start, it is a poorly executed film in my opinion with too much expensive CGI and absolutely no plot. The idea is good, and the camera work would be realistic to that situation but it is extremely hard to follow the action at times, which defeats the point of watching it. It is basically people running around Manhattan manically trying not to get viscerated by the monster whilst giving you a visual assault on the eyes. It is one of those films that you desperately want to find something to get into story wise because it has some obvious quality, but when it ends you realise that there is no story and know less than you did when the film started. There is no beginning or ending and nothing to follow story wise through the film. A good film must convey it's message to the audience. Cloverfield did nothing. I really wanted to the monster to win because it would have seen some action, such is the lack of plot. Visuals: 9 Entertainment: 6 Plot: 2 Value for Money: 3 I would not recommend seeing this. It is destined for the £2.99 bargain bin at Morrisons. Expand

I was lucky and somehow completely missed the hype, so I went in with only low-level expectations given the large amounts of negative commentary on the net. For the first twenty minutes some annoying kids were burping and swearing in the cinema (bless - up past their bedtimes) but as soon as things kicked off they sat there in stunned silence, just like everyone else. We all shuffled out of the cinema mumbling and punch drunk. I completely forgot to eat my popcorn and my bloody hands were shaking! When did a movie last do that to me? Er... never, dude. Not even watching Alien on video alone in a large house with the lights out when I was thirteen. Brilliant special effects, even better sound. Totally suspends disbelief, it's horribly, horribly real-feeling. The videocam storytelling technique completely removes the fourth wall, so the audience is right there trapped in New York with the rampaging monsters. Absolute genius, bloody terrifying, short, horrific and sweet as hell. Expand

Its nearly Hitchcock style how you always hear the Monster moving, but actually rarely see it. Drawbacks: Seeing the monster actually took some of the tension for me and replaced with disbelief. It was like the old Star Trek problem: Somehow it again looks human. This particular monster looked like coming from some Manga Cartoon in the closeup. Also no signs of any damage at all taken by the monster raised the disbelieve "level". Monsters running around in god-mode "invul" Flag just don't cut it. 8/10 from me. worth watching. Once you get over the jerky camera work and get settled, the film does its best to make you feel the exact opposite, unsettled and vulnerable like the characters who are wondering what the hell is going on. You realize that there is nothing that these individuals can do to stop the rampaging destruction that has come to New York and this is reflected well in the film. The commercials and trailers really captured my attention about how good Cloverfield would be... but in my opinion that was as good as it would get. When I stepped out of the theater there was only one thing on my mind: How bad the ending was. Believe me, the entire film is spectacular and eye-popping visuals and amazingly blended in with the shaky camera, but if you really loved the characters or were at least concerned about the main ones at the beginning of the movie, then prepare to be extremely disappointed. But if you try to accept the early hint that "This videotape known as Cloverfield was recovered at what was once Central Park" that should tell you right away that whatever happened to the filmmakers met a grizzly end. But the thing I hated was just he fact the entire movie was like this, there's 3 points, A, B, and C. A is the start, B is in the middle of the city, and C is escaping the city. We start at A obviously, and when we're going to C, we actually go back to B and almost A, THEN C again. That's pretty much the entire movie. So unless you like endings where the heroes meet an awful demise, or you can't take the shaky camera implemented from the "Blair Witch Project", then save $7.00 off by not going to see Cloverfield. But I would definately recommend renting it if you wanted to see it. It's just not worth the $7 it's been hailed for. You'll scream for your money back as soon as the credits roll. Expand

SPOILER WARNING! Some viewers complained about the low quality of filming, or that nothing is explained, or that you hardly see the monster, or that the protagonists die cruelly despite noble efforts. Yes, Cloverfield takes some unusual steps, but not just for the sake of a new artsy or postmodern take on the genre. It is very effective in creating a realistic feel: given the scenario, I think this is pretty much what it would look like. Instead of being just another more-or-less-sophisticated CGI monster, wreaking boring CGI havoc that we've all see before, the realism is the only thing that could have made it scary. Which it does, by the numbers. 9 points! I'll give it a tenth point because I loved the contrast between the "horror present" video, and the nuggets of "good day" past: the shots previously recorded on the tape. This is a just monster movie, but hey, they don't come better than this. If you hate the genre itself, don't bother seeing or reviewing it! Expand

There are so many unbelievable ridiculous things like a person surviving being impaled through the chest on a piece of rebar and then a helicopter crash without even a broken bone or life threatening bleeding. The main attraction to seeing the film was at least for me curiosity as to what the monster looks like so take my advice and just find a picture on the internet and save your money for something worth watching. Cloverfield is more of a ride then a film. Seeing the destruction and mayhem of NYC from a first person view is done perfectly. You'll leave the theatre thinking you had just escaped the monster yourself.

There was bad acting and the camera work was terrible. It got annoying after a while, but overall it was okay I guess. I liked the statue of liberty head flying off.
