There's something here for everyone, except stuck up film snobs apparently. It's a fun movie, just adjust your expectations. Far more human and interesting than Ex Machina

Super fun movie. Not typical. Its a fun take on I Robot. It has some drama too. Plot is not very intriguing, but despite that the movie is good. I recommend it. Besides, where else can you see Hugh Jackman getting pwned like that?

You know, this movie is a little weird. It's not super slick like Hollywood movies, and I really liked that about it. It's different. Give it a shot.

This is the quintessential 'outsider' film. Everyone character is alone, from Sigourney Weaver to Hugh Jackman. Even the gang members aren't united. Blomkamp hands it to us on a platter with the 'Black Sheep' story but the critics overlooked it. It's a film about trying to find your identity. It's about bullies. Its about how cruel and selfish people can be. 'You all lie!' A couple of plot holes, yes, but hopefully, in time, this film will find it's way into acceptance. A shame for all involved as there's much to discover, not all so obvious. Expand

Its a sci-fi age and robot rules.

It came as a little surprise. Obviously I was looking for this film, but not expected to reach at this level. The film was really brilliant despite the influence of plenty of other films. Yes, the ideas were borrowed from the movies like 'Short Circuit', 'I, Robot', 'RoboCop', Real Steel', "Bicentennial Man', 'Transcendence', et cetera. But that did not bother me at all. I would call it an inspiration to make a new product out that already existed.

It was not completely depended on Dev Patel's role, otherwise woulda been a disaster. Its the Hugh Jackman, eventhough his character was not on the frontline, because of his presence, the movie was filled with some exciting and thrilling moment. His role was pretty much same to 'Real Steal', but showed in a different shade.

Silly concept, even dialogues were so stupid. I don't know, maybe because of the South African accent. But the screenplay was very good. Fast and gets the point quickly than wasting time for buildups. One of the best robot movie and it will be remembered. Looks like the sequel will be more furious and going to be an action packed item, if there will be one. Worth to watch it at least once.

This was a great movie. I couldn't help but laugh and 'awww' at Chappies dialogue. It is well worth the watch.

It's a combination of the vulgarity and technology of District 9 and the charm and humor of Wall-e.

This movie's take on AI isn't exactly the most scientifically accurate portrayal, but as a fun popcorn movie, Chappie takes a little bit of cerebral, a larger bit of Neill Blomkamp action, and a lot of South African weirdness. If you're expecting just a cameo from South African rappers Die Antwoord, you're wrong. They're surprisingly in focus.

There are more than a few plot holes and writing mistakes, but it's largely made up for by how compelling the on-screen reality is. Neill Blomkamp directed the heck out of this movie. If he ever gets a really brilliant script, he'll make a great movie. As a writer, he's too eager to please a crowd and not eager enough to answer its questions.

Given how hard it reportedly was to make a film with non-actors, this may be the only Die Antwoord sci-fi action thriller we ever see. However, they are impossible to duplicate, and the sheer absurdity of watching them prance around unironically in skimpy Americana, juxtaposed against an entirely convincing emancipated police robot learning to think, makes the movie work. It isn't quite as exciting as District 9, but it's far less ponderous and heavy-handed than Elysium. Go watch it and have some fun.

But it looks good and a watchable piece of fine art. Director/co-writer Neil Blomkamp and other writer Terri Tatchell, keep trying to focus on three or four stories, to make a film but an order to make good-looking film you have to focus on one story. Not even the actors Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, and Dev Patel can save this film from a script were we have Chappie. Die antwoord the band stars as the lead characters as gangsters, it's confusing on how they star in it but they don't play them selves? their music is bad and we don't buy their acting. Sharlto Copley's motion capture performance is astonishing and that's what sold the movie "priceless," this could of been an A movie but it's a B+ movie. Since Blomkamp ("District 9 and "Elysium"), is taking over the "Alien 5" franchise i think we should worry? or i could not have been more concerned? will he make his A.I robots fight with the aliens? confusing. Blomkamp's signature blend of raw violence and human sentiment is still on display throughout, but is more potent here since the director (and his wife Terri Tatchell) focus purely on the struggle between children and adults, and the hardships that come with growing up. The film also doubles as a tight, compelling meditation on what it really means to be alive. I think the critics missed the ball here.

The title character, voiced and performed by Sharlto Copley, is fully realized. He gives the film a beating heart, and brings real-world human qualities and actual depth to an otherwise mechanical figure. I'd like to see Copley get some more quality roles in the movies. His maker, played by Dev Patel, isn't as well developed, but is no less compelling. Hugh Jackman from the X-Men films relishes the opportunity to play the villain, a roboticist skeptical of artificial intelligence. He is a hoot to watch, partially because of his mullet and the fact he's completely over-the-top. The real surprise here is rap group Die Antwoord as a pair of criminals who fight with Patel's character over how to raise Chappie. While their acting is rough around the edges, they help give the film a unique charm, adding wit and flavor to the gritty proceedings. Their scenes together provide commentary on dysfunctional families. The only weak link in this ensemble is Sigourney Weaver, sadly (as the CEO of the robot factory), since her role is basically a glorified cameo.

Overall, "Chappie" is fresh, ballsy, confident and very entertaining (sorry, Divergent!). Blomkamp, with three winners in a row now, is at the top of the modern action movie throne. He is one of the very few people I trust when it comes to blockbusters, and his films are definitive evidence.

HIS ACTING IS AWESOME!!!!!
I ADORE HIM SUDDENLY!
PUUURFECT!

It's just the whole great things in this movie like being so messed up, like we don't know which one is right or wrong side anymore.
It feels like Nightcrawler. Then there's Wall-E feels... and Transcendence.
(It's extremely better than Transcendence! Come on, Critics! It's worth green score!)
Well, but Chappie gave me better enjoyment until ending, laugh-sad-thrill-confused-happy all the feelings. Stay still on my seat, that's a big deal.

The big star for the movie is truly Dev Patel. Well done.

3.5/5
For the climax ending (though there's hospital option, but well)
For the all feelings I experienced
For the music
For Dev Patel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Critics seem to have taken an offence to this film and have literally badgered the ratings in Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. They feel this film is worse than Elysium and it’s Neill Blomkamp’s worst film. “Robocopy”, “Jar Jar wept..”, etc. were the exact comments critics came out with. One of them has even quoted “I haven't been as happy to see a movie end since the third Transformers.”

Are you kidding me? It was a blast and this film keeps you engaged throughout the film. There’s never a boring moment. I’ve read most of the reviews and they only have a very few valid points. There are things like how Jackman pins Dev Patel with a gun in office without anyone saying anything or how gangsters let their kidnapping victim come and go. Yes, these are some screenwriting concerns which makes the experience unreasonable at times. But it’s still a breezy script and the action moves along without having a dull moment. Trust me, most of the reviews are just wild rants and people conforming to peer pressure. I’ll take down their points one by one.

This film has been heavily criticized for its derivativeness, especially with its links to Robocop. But hey, there’s nothing original in art, and art is all about referencing other art forms. Also, original may be uninteresting and boring. On the contrary, this film is refreshing new especially the way he combined old references to create something unique. Much like Tarantino, he took it to a whole new level of existential philosophy and action. In fact, it’s way better than any Robocop sequels ever made.

Now, an annoying Chappie seems to have bothered many. But hey, wasn’t Chappie was just as fun like being with a child. And, making it behave like a child must include a little annoyance. It makes it cute and realistic. No wonder Yolandi’s motherly instincts kicked in so well. If anyone thinks that an annoying child is a bad thing then they should check with their psychiatrist immediately.

Yes, the acting wasn’t great like Birdman but it wasn’t a distraction either. If people are upset because the actors look odd and aren’t as good looking then they should think again. Nothing is noticeably bad, rather it’s realistic. And, if Birdman hasn’t bagged any Oscars for acting then what acting are we talking about? Sharlto Copley was awesome and how he brings Chappie to life from an inanimate is commendable.
Blomkamp has expanded big time on philosophical content in films and he really provides us with something to think about. What is consciousness and how can it pass on? Does it itself make someone exist or we only exist when others believe that we do? It’s a classical existential film which tells us how important it is for us to attach meaning and purpose to a cause. It’s also a statement on how the world is a bad place for an outcast or someone who is different, and expands on his earlier xenophobic themes in films.

I must add that there are some missed opportunities in this film as well. The sense of style in District 9 was there but not as good and because of this the film lacked unity in style. Secondly, they could have done better with some strong actors even though the acting wasn’t so bad. Third, some of the characters were really not necessary for e.g. Dev Patel could have had a minor role. They draw attention away from our main character i.e. Chappie. Also, the antagonists could have definitely been stronger and more intimidating. Lastly, it needed to be a little darker and going by D9 it fell a little short.

However, saying all that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is still a very emotional film and gets you to choke every now and then. At the same time it is filled with some tense action scenes. It’s delivered on its ideas too and is subtle enough to scratch your head when you think about those existential questions. But, above all it’s a fun ride with Chappie who’s thrown into this world with no knowledge of things around him. Definitely could have done better with a little more fun and humor, but either way it was still a great watch. I loved it and I have my own reasons no matter what the others say, especially the recognized critics. So, I suggest to go and find it out for yourself because, “I am consciousness, I’m Chappie”

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (spoilers ahead) So I'm a pretty big fan of these critical thinking movies, and there's a lot of thinking and philosophy to be gained from this movie and the movie does a great job with the whole theme of god, humanity, immortality, and loss of innocence as we watch our main character Chappie come to terms with the world. But here's the thing that personally got me and that's the ending, it wasn't terrible but int the whole build up of Chappie essentially dying and with this looming death overhead he tries to find other means to try and live even breaking his promise with Dion saying he will do no crime so there's the loss of innocence as he ignores Dion and get's tempted by everyone else to do commit crime, and in the end it should of been a confrontation with him and Dion (his maker) who is kinda portraying god who at the end of the movie is dying from a fight but Chappie believes he can save him by transferring his consciousness into another robot essentially letting him live forever, but this is successful and Chappie does come to terms with his death happy to sacrifice himself so that his maker is alive and well but Dion then say he can save Chappie too and this is successful. I am saying that a sadder ending would of been miles better in delivering a message about humanity and all but in the end the overall movie is visually stunning with his robotics and does provide a look on someone growing up and facing hardships making him stronger for it (even though the movie is being held within the spam of a week). I was actually sort of thinking the story would of been different like the police were abusing their power and a guy who made the robots get's another point of view and decides to help by trying to create a robot that will help rise against the oppressors and this goes with the theme of Chappie growing up and is being pulled by two sides as both argue a somewhat valid point like one guy suggest going against the robots and that'll take the power for the corrupted another suggest go for the head of the snake and kill the corrupted so they can instead have the power. Though it might have peppered with some unreasonable moments and few screenwriting drawbacks, it's still an awesome action-packed movie (and heart-wrenching sometimes) in a way that as well enables me to wonder if we are more human or robot if conscience could be transferred from human to a robotic body comparing to a self learning sentient android that could develop its own "conscience"...
P.S. This could also be a good lesson to how one should bring up a kid by setting good example and using the right language in front of them...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Short version: don't be discouraged by the negative reviews, give it a chance in the theaters and then decide!
Long version:
I get that it's not a perfect movie from an execution point of view, but i really don't think the reviews are doing this one justice.
Sure, there are some plot holes but it seems people are focusing way too much on that instead of focusing on the good stuff this movie has to offer. Chappie, the robot, is really charming, convincing and very well developed as he goes from toddler, curious child witnessing the wonders of the world for the first time to facing the harsh reality of life and ultimately becoming conscious of his own mortality and freaking out about it. Also, how the opposing outside influences of Deon as the book worm science guy, Yolandi as the nurturing punk mom and the semi-abusive gangster father figure of Ninja have a believable impact on Chappie's growing up and understanding of the world I found well done and very believable.
Sure, Yolandi and Ninja may not be the best actors in the world (they're not actors after all), but I personally think they play themselves in a way that services the film, with a few exceptions. Blomkamp clearly knew how to direct them and use them in the story and although some may argue they're a distraction and seem "stitched in", I took them as a well deserved dose of levity and color and an interesting couple set to raise a sentient robot.
There were some pretty funny scenes at some point, most memorably the "putting them to sleep" part, that gave the dark and violent 3rd act a much more personal undertone and more power. It's the old "get them to have some good moments so you feel for them much more when the beep hits the fan".
But what it boils down to, for me personally, is that this movie takes good SciFi concepts and portrays them is a better way and raises smarter questions about AI, consciousness, mortality and the difference between man and machine way better that any movie I've seen these last years. Certainly better than Transcendence witch was utter garbage.
Also, as a software engineer myself, I think this movie does a very good job of keeping itself grounded in reality from a computer science point of view. All the concepts used are things expected to become reality and are being worked on in present. That is what makes it a good SciFi movie first and foremost, mixing in just the right amount of Fi with a substantial amount of Sci to keep it believable. The substance is there, even if in order to get all the ideas on screen some of the character development was sacrificed making the characters seem one note of cartoon y. I'm sure they all have complex lives and reasons for doing what they do, but there's only that much screen time and you can't show all of that. Not excusing it, but I don't think it's a reason to damn this movie.
I'd put it on par with District 9, certainly better than Elysium. In this case I think the negative reviews are doing the movie a disfavor, there's nothing better out anyway, so why not give it a try and see if you like it for yourselves. And even if it bombs, this for me has the makings of a cult classic.

I couldn't disagree more with the people calling the movie, "A washed up version of district 9" or a failed remake of some other popular science fiction movie. The grit infused into the movie is almost tangible as Blomkamp finally delivers a believable dystopian South Africa. Hugh Jackman's performance is stellar. His role as a paranoid ex-military man was flawless. Niell shows a future South African drug gang society that is as much captivating as it is frightening while somehow dispelling needless violence. Even with an R rating for language and violence, none of it is misplaced. Character development was done well also, giving not just "enough of" an arc for every main character but instead completing their story in a fulfilling way. My only complaint has to do with the "gangster" sideways shooting method that Watkin Jones teaches Chappie in one scene. However I do not want to oversell the movie either. There's a few reasons I didn't give it a ten or even a nine.

But go see for yourself. You wont be sorry you did.

I am an avid movie viewer and watch several new movies a week. In the past 24 hours I ave watched American Sniper and Chappie in theaters. I didn't want to watch American Sniper because I assumed it was a movie made for rednecks, but after the slow beginning it was amazing and had me in tears, but that's for another review. My expectations for Chappie were not high. I listen to Die Antwoord and I was prepared to cringe at their acting and the overused plot. In brief, the movie was stupid and neat. Stupid neat. I enjoyed it. The target audience for this film are R&B lovers, gangsters by heart, nerds, cultured people that can put oddness aside, and people with an interest in technology. I can understand the mixed reviews because not a lot of people fit into these categories, and I would not recommend the film to these people. I fell under the near market, and the previous exposure to Die Antwoord market. This film is not going to win most original, best picture, or acting but as for a movie to go watch with a friend on a Saturday night, I give it an B+ or an A-. It exercised the mind and your inner gangster. After the movie I had pulled up Die Antwoord on Spotifiy and drove to their South African R&B beats and it was fun. There were plenty of cliches that are associated with this type of film, but among the recylced plot was its own touch of creativity. Their were vivid colors, not too much focus on stupid violence, and things that you won't see in any other AI film. There were plenty of silly plot wholes that act as conversation starters after the film, such as security protocol. So I would call this a social film. Go watch it with a friend that fits the markets. Expand

I was excited to see this since the 1st trailer I saw. marketing was solid as it wasn't constant bombardment of ads showing only the cool stuff. so its always surprising how the story unfolds, but then the critics, my god, the critics hammered this movie. I almost didn't want to see it. but it was perfect because when I eventually did see it my expectations were considerably lowered, and I was pleasantly surprised with a solid sci-fi future action flick. critics all said it was really blomkamp-y being filmed in s. Africa-again, but it actually wasn't as bad as elysm, which looked like they used the D9 set. it was gritty but it only added to the whole futuristic dystopian blah, blah, blah. having unknown actors was cool, I guess theyre actually famous for something, but ive never heard of them so it works out perfectly. s.african/English accent is brutal to listen to, but you get used to it as the movie goes on and begin to understand what theyre saying, chappie as a kid and learning was a dope idea for the movie, but the plot holes that came along with that story were the only downside to the movie. but chappie's development and personality were great. the critics made him out to be jar jar binx or something, but really was not that bad. silly in some parts but not outright annoying. the bad guy was basically the same bad guy as in D9, elysm. I mean really the same-exact-character. but aside from that I didn't see the whole Robocop comparison, I mean yeah the robots did look similar, but different story.
overall there were a lot of plot holes, but it was a good action movie. decent special effects, great story but a few too many stretches in the story were this movies downfall. its worth a watch.

If you go in hoping to see a fun (and funny) popcorn movie with fantastic visuals, entertaining performances and some softly-delivered social messaging, then this is a perfectly good way to spend two hours. I'm really bothered by the criticism of Neil Blomkamp for supposedly becoming "M. Night Shyamalan 2.0". Just let the man make his weird movies. His vision is fresh and his movies are well crafted. Giving rappers Die Antwoord (Ninja and Yo-Landi) major roles was a big risk that mostly paid off in the final scenes (and reinforced the distinctly South African feel of the movie). My advice? Ignore the haters and relax. "Chappie" might be a spiritual successor to "Short Circuit," but it actually has a soul. That's no small feat in today's studio scene. Expand

Beautiful character design, eclectic performances and a thoroughly engaging storyline made for an excellent experience. Knowing Die Antwoord prior to this really helped, and I'd anticipate that audiences unfamiliar with them may find them, and the South African subtext, unsettling and somewhat difficult stylistically. Some truly poignant moments are interspersed with a delightful humour and, though some of the themic content needed more care, this is another unique exploration of the nature of humanity and the soul dealt with in a playful, rather than sombre, fashion. The dialogue was occasionally weak, bordering on charicature, and the cinematography was generally well executed. Overall this was a fast paced, sometimes poignant and always engaging experience. 8.11/10 Expand

Calling it underdeveloped seems like a miss. I was confused by the need to drop in South African duo Die Antwoord into major roles within the film but they did fine enough to warrant belief in those characters and carry part of the narrative. Neil Bloomkamp has a great, consistent string of movies. They all feel a little familiar - futuristic but dirty (and it's generally through a South African lens). If a movie that walks you through the training of a robot as if it were an infant while offering some good action to keep things going, Chappie is really worth the watch. It's silly that critics couldn't feel the same. Expand

There is no mistaking Chappie for the work of any director other than Neil Blomkamp, and as ever the integration of computer generated effects and live action is superb. Other than Chappie himself however, the characters are pretty one note and not particularly interesting, and whatever social or psychological commentary it was aiming for was total lost on me. The result is a movie that, whilst still relatively entertaining, fails to match the heights of Blomkamp’s excellent District Nine. Expand

I have no idea why the critics hated it so much. No, it is not as good as District 9, but it is still a good action science fiction movie from a guy, Neill Blomkamp, who seems to be quite adept at making socially conscious action movies. But heck, don't listen to me, I liked Elysium too. To me, Blomkamp is a very good director who is very ambitious in his films. They do not match his ambitions more often than not, but the end result is also quite positive. The themes here are similar to the rest of his films and Johannesburg will certainly continue to be viewed negatively worldwide due to its portrayal here, but all the same, it is a very fun and well made film. The cast as a whole is good and quite believable in all of their roles. I know Die Antwoord got a lot of criticism for their performances, but I truly believed them and they did not stick out at all. The development of Chappie was great and he is certainly one of the best characters in a film in recent times, in my humble opinion. The film really delivers in the heady sci-fi elements viewers come to expect from the genre (as well as a ton of Biblical elements, such as "genisis" and referring to the guy who created Chappie as his "maker", plus some characters being obviously religious). The action is well done and the film can be quite adorable (thanks to Chappie) and funny throughout. It is also oddly touching, as it always amazes me how much I can be made to care about a robot. Overall, Chappie does have flaws, namely in the way of plotholes or points where it feels like the story just skipped ahead a bit. It also manages to cram a lot into a short time period, which is a unique criticism, but one I feel is justified. All the same, Blomkamp's films always are very sleek and stylish and the way the robots are designed is super cool (just as the aliens in District 9's design was great). As a whole, Chappie was unfairly torn apart for some of its flaws, while many ignored the many positives it delivered. Not as good as District 9, but Blomkamp certainly took a step back in that direction here, as it is better than Elysium. Definitely looking forward to his Alien film (hopefully set in Joburg, because why not). Expand

Those are the questions raised by this movie. Really a plus in my book to get viewer to mull over for a while.
In summary, one of the better movies this year so far. On par for entertainment as Elysium, but more thought provoking like District 9. Who knew people could feel sorry for a robot onscreen (of all places)?

But once I realized this was more a science fiction action comedy more than a political diatribe, I was pleasantly surprised.
Don't get me wrong, this is not a great movie by any standard, but it is extremely entertaining. In fact, I'd say it's Blomkamp's best in my books.
It doesn't take itself too seriously and decides to go for action comedy rather than half baked pseudo socio-political commentary.
The movie is at it's best when it embraces the silliness and fully goes with it, as the sappy drama and the social insight feel very unpolished.

Additionally, a lot of the acting from the Die Antwoord band members is sub par, and Hugh Jackman, plays a ridiculously artificial caricature of an antagonist. But as style rules over realism, these conflicts are easily ignored.

Not nearly as self serious, ridiculously moralistic or grotesquely caricaturesque as District 9 or Elysium, and a much better movie for it.

Because despite the many, many critics firing at it to its post-apocalyptic hell and back—specifically targeting director Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 commercial and critical breakthrough District 9, calling his success a “fluke” after 2013’s disappointing Elysium and considering him a “one-hit wonder” among the sci-fi genre—I, however, found Chappie to be both conceptually and visually involving when it wasn’t balancing on a tightrope between Chappie’s Short Circuit’s innocence-meets-Iron Giant’s naivety and the “gangsta” glorification or glamorization of their respective stereotypes. It’s one of the rare occasions where the R rating felt quite restrictive and main protagonist Chappie’s awe-inspiring lightheartedness and the supporting characters’ vulgarity and ugliness and the film’s gritty nature crossover in what appears to be Blomkamp’s identity crisis of whether he wants his ‘80s sci-fi influences to tug audiences at the heartstrings or the attention span.

As you can tell from the “awe-inspiring” comment, maybe I’m of the minority that found Chappie’s childlike nature both charming and, dare I say, cute as a former police bot could be. It’s a bit frustrating when I hear film critics call adolescent characters in any film “annoying” based on, let’s say in Chappie’s case, their immature, inquisitive, or at certain scenes, whiny qualities. Because aren’t all children annoying because of their wondrous behavior? I could’ve understood these criticisms if I didn’t let out so many damn ‘awe’s at Chappie’s dialogue; from Chappie’s use of “mommy” and “daddy”—both [spoiler] referring to the South African rave-rap duo Die Antwoord, ok—to the take-it-or-leave-it “f***-mother!” to the questions that even bask in the back of our minds from time to time regarding our own existence (“Why did you make me so I would die?”). The supporting characters—Chappie’s good-natured AI creator and the oppositely-natured Die Antwoord respectively—are all there, ready to adopt the bot for their own selfish moral desires, which is engaging entertainment in its own right once you see Chappie’s rapid character growth due to their influences all-in-one. But it’s as if the human characters themselves experience frequent and unusual personality malfunctions throughout Chappie’s two-hour duration, where DA’s Yo-Landi even becomes more nurturing than the creator.

Besides the narrative shortcomings, philosophical and political undertones also make their way into Chappie in typical Blomkamp style, where we are not once explicitly aware of what he’s actually trying to say outside of obvious topics—such as the state of consciousness and how far it may or may not expand beyond that of current common knowledge, not that 2013’s Her didn’t already quite commendably confront that—and AI—already. Because let’s face it, Blomkamp just can’t take a breather when it comes to the film’s overabundance of action sequences. The $50 million budget definitely results in some visually striking imagery and the South African setting feels original in an era where everything in cinema is happening in either America or Europe nowadays. But couldn’t we get at least a hint that the storyline can progress itself without the need of guns, explosions, ultraviolence toward the third act, and more and more explosions. As if its identity crisis couldn’t have been distracting enough regarding its moral stance and aforementioned change in tone.

But as much as I could nitpick Chappie for simply not being District 9’s much, much more successful storytelling, I’d be a damned liar if I said I didn’t feel enchanted or engulfed at least once throughout its desperation of wondering what Short Circuit would be like if it existed in the RoboCop universe. If I was ambivalent at certain moments, I began to see the inspiration start to sneak through the tiniest bits of dialogue or visual sequences, particularly those involving Chappie himself. It’s an excellent concept that merely needed a longer lifespan during the developmental process, perhaps if Blomkamp wasn’t so anxious to direct the next Alien sequel—but, I mean, who wouldn’t be? After reading online into many professional’s reportedly slim expectations regarding its fulfillment of its half-of-a-hundred million dollar budget, I’ll be even more disappointed if Chappie doesn’t at least garner a cult following just so I can hope for the slightest chance that Blomkamp—or another director, if so many others don’t find him fit enough—to reintroduce us into this universe, whether it’s in the form of a sequel or perhaps even a reboot in the distant, distance future. Please!

Overall rating: 7.1

P.S., without revealing any major SPOILERS, one of the scenes has Chappie in his childlike form receiving quite a bit of physical and emotional abuse and has received negative reactions from former victims of child abuse, saying it triggered painful memories. A warning, I suppose.

What I loved in the movie was Chappie himself, he is the cutest in-human movie protagonist since E.T, and some of the best pats of the movie revolved around Chappie growing up, and I loved it. I also liked how Chappie represents Children living in places like South Africa or Rio, who, while pure at heart, are corrupted by money and the criminal lifestyle. However, there were many things I didn't like about the movie. I didn't like the gangsters who took Chappie away from his owner. I realize they are part of a south African rap group, but you never grow to love ther. their mean people who do despicable things to chappie, and while the movie tries to make you feel sorry for them, I never rooted for them through the whole movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Chappie is a science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp (director of District 9 and Elysium) and stars Sharlto Copley and Dev Patel. The premise of Chappie is very intriguing, a guy decides to build a sophisticated A.I. that can think and feel. This movie, however, takes an interesting turn. Instead of becoming this sweet and lovable robot, he becomes an a****** and a gangster and completely ignore's Deon (Dev Patel) while committing various crimes. But, the movie does do a great job of how showing how a child's mind is so easily influenced. However, there are some major issues with this movie. First of all, the actors who played the gangsters who raise Chappie (voiced by Sharlto Copley) are completely terrible at acting. I mean, like Razzie worthy. None of the lines they say have any emotional depth and they can be extremely over-the-top and annoying as hell. The other big issue is the pacing, which is a complete mess. Some parts feel slow and some parts feel fast-paced. But all-in-all, Chappie is a good and thought provoking science-ficton film that conveys how the mind of a child can be so easily bended. 7/10 Expand

I liked the way the character of Chappie developed ( acting at the beginning like a curious toddler before gradually behaving like a grumpy teenager). I'd listen to the users on this one. Good film. I enjoyed Chappie. It wasn't District 9 level brilliance, but it was a thoughtful cyberpunk romp with a genuinely likeable protagonist. Definitely worth a rent at least.

Future Johannesburg is patrolled by a force of mechanized police that have restored order to the crime-ridden streets. A trio of criminals ends up with a rogue robot that's been programmed with consciousness, giving it a child's innocent mindset. Instead of cool fights, there's lots of rash dialogue, hurried activity and numerous efforts to create an endearing creature out of Chappie. The South African duo from Die Antwoord, who have major roles, are raw and unusual looking, but not especially strong as actors. There are fallacies in the logic that border on ridiculous and only one good final battle (with yet another machine). Still, director Neill Blomkamp manages to keep it interesting and the creation of the robot itself is pretty compelling. Expand

The thing about 'Chappie' is that it is a film of great moments and depth but riddled with some bizarre choices in the storytelling that serves to undo all the great work that Blomkamp manages to achieve. The character of 'Chappie' himself is a technical triumph and just oozes life and feels natural within the landscape whilst also providing the film with its main source of charm and comedy. But the most glaringinly odd choice that Blomkamp makes with this is having the main character supported by 3 unlikeable criminals who then act as the main focus of the narrative instead of the more obvious character Deon (Dev Patel). It's such a strange choice especially since initially there appears to be nothing redeemable about them and intially it doesn't work at all. However by the films climax, you do kind of feel a connection to them and their relationship with Chappie somehow seems to 'redeem' them by the time all hell breaks loose without you even realising it. It's all rather odd and just screams out as a bad idea and yet somehow it does work even though I would say that Chappie's relationship with Deon feels rather forced in comparison and doesn't really need to be there. The action is better, the characters are more interesting in spite of the issues I mentioned but I do feel that too much is going on at different times and I feel that the balance isn't quite there. It's definitely not a disaster by any means and while I look forward to Blomkamp's upcoming Alien film, 'Chappie' is a fair indicator that Blomkamp isn't quite the one hit wonder some might have feared. The underlying elements of any traditional black sheep story are thought provoking and moving. Not every piece of science-fiction strikes with such emotion - but when it does, it's worth it. Chappie does it well - and we have fun along the way.

TheChappie fares far better than Blomkamp's previous- Elysium, a muddled drama with an unsatisfying payoff. The visual effects are brilliant, and Blomkamp doesnt hold onto his ghetto Johannesburg that looks lush and gorgeous. Dev Patel is presentable as Deon Wilson, the creator of Chappie. But, Die Artwood steal the show with their emotional acting, that will surely fare better on in their careers. Look, Chappie isnt a bad film, it is coated with beautiful visuals and great acting, but beneath that layer, there is a movie that shouldn't have been made. Blomkamp's work wasnt used to its limit in Chappie, and that is what fears me, he is one of the best directors in Hollywood, and Chappie isnt his best work. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. hmm I have very mixed feelings about this one... The beginning got me hooked... The progression after with chappie growing with the gang was not what I was expecting and kinda brought the value of the movie down in my eyes. Some point between the middle and the end got a little interesting but certain parts towards the end (especially the big fight scenes) made the movie seem corny and poorly thought out. The concept is a really good one. I know because that was what got me hooked on seeing the movie. However, the execution left a lot to be desired. Overall, a decent film with so much unrealized potential. 6/10 Expand

While I can't bring myself to say it's that good, in fact in some ways it's pretty terrible, it certainly is compelling. What really struck me most was how Die Antwoord simply hijacked the movie, and I say that with a sense of admiration rather than criticism. Their asthetic, their music, their t-shirts for crying out loud are all over this joint. Really, the movie's about them and the robot is a side story. For most of Americans who have barely heard of them (if at all) this movie will likely seem to come straight out of left field as we lack the context to understand them or where they're coming from. Their style is certainly unique, and odd, and the two of them seem more alien than the robot.

Grafted onto Die Antwoord's expression of "zef" culture is a fairly tired, 2 dimensional meditation on artificial intelligence and what makes us human. Not as strong as either of Blomkamp's previous two films. Hugh Jackman's character is particularly cardboard, and Dev Patel's even more so. Still, worth seeing just for Ninja and Yolindi's hijinks, plus the setting is evocative as usual for a Blomkamp film.

Have you seen Short Circuit? Did you wish it had more gang violence, carjackings, and gratuitous gore?

Chappie is a mostly enjoyable, somewhat cartoonish, surprisingly derivative effort from a director whose last two films were undeniably original. But just because something's been done before doesn't mean it can't be done again, and have fun doing it, taking some interesting (and one very ridiculous) turns along the way. The visual effects are great, particularly the rendering of the title character. The acting is also quite good, including a couple of entertaining performances by rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser (and her pet rat) of Die Antwoord, playing fictionalized versions of themselves.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Chappie is a movie that had great potential at the start but, like most movies nowadays, had a weak middle and got slightly better near the end. I say this because Chappie's start was flawless upto the point where Dion was captured. After that the middle section of the movie felt violent choppy and aggressive.

However, as the movie dragged on near the end it started picking up where it left of at the start - with the ending being great. Another upside of this movie was the music. It completely set the mood, this was somewhat of a redeeming factor for the whole of the movie and something I would love to see in other ones.

All in all, Chappie is a movie that I would recommend other people to watch just to see how their opinions differ to mine.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As I think, a movie becomes best when the viewers find something unexpected at the end of the movie. But, this movie ends with a normal ending. when Deon got hurts, Chappie, as a robot shows humanity and try to save him while his battery was going to over. By my opinion, the end of the movie can be better if the director presents that Deon stay wounded and when polices enters into the hall Chappie's battery would down and it would be dead. Because, the human brain can never be transmitted, i believe, death can never be ignored. But, the movie shows that with the neurotransmitter helmet human consciousness can be transferred to a new body which is totally impossible and unbelievable.
Over all, the movie grows up very well. One can learn bad sides of arrogance, not to stop in front of your dream from the movie. Deon's perseverance is quite impressive. But seriously speaking, It could be my most favorite movie if it ends in an unexpected way not showing that with science one can ignore death.
Thank you, Neill Blomkamp for a beautiful movie.

Beautiful to look at and interesting main character.

Sadly, the movie overall doesn't live to its potential.

If you have watched other movies from Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium), than you will find nothing new about Chappie other than the main character. Blomkamp has an obsession on portraying the lack of equality and fairness and in a sci-fi uthopia setting. While it was fresh with disctrict 9, it is really getting annoying at this point.

Great Blomkamp, the formula worked in discrit 9... You don't have to use it for EVERY single movie you make! Considering, that Blomkamp is working on a new "alien" movie, I am starting to fear that he will try to shoe horn his moral values in this one aswell (Maybe the aliens are actually misunderstood creatures bullied by humans? Please... don't Blomkamp!)

While Chappie is likable, his "parents"... Are not... You get that Blomkamp is going for the missunderstood minority and oppressed group. But honestly... I never felt any empathy for these people. They are scum. They manipulate and abuse chappie because he has the mind of a child. Just because they are the "oppressed", doesn't mean that we are suppose to care for them. These are bad people and you will want them to die, so that Chappie can break free from their influence.

Blomkamp knows how to shoot good action scenes and make breath taking sci-fi worlds. It is a shame that the South African director feels the need to create an analogy to the apartheid in all the movies he makes.

Blomkamp is on his way to become the next M night shyamalan. He needs to let the all "oppressed" in a sci-fi setting go, and show us that he can make something new and refreshing.

Chappie was an okay movie, but not great. It was certainly entertaining and had moments that made me smile and chuckle, but otherwise it didn't really bring anything else to the table.
I like Die Antwoord, and they were actually pretty good in the movie but I found their shameless self- promotion in every scene quite jarring (Yolandi and "Ninja" play the same roles as they do in their band, listen to their own music, wear their own T-Shirts, etc). Some have mentioned this movie is some kind of tribute to them, but I don't see how. There was some wasted star power from Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman, though I will say that Sharlto Copley's performance as Chappie was quite excellent.
Tonality wise, it felt like this movie couldn't decide what it wanted to be. The Robocop meets Short Circuit vibe was *very* on the nose, and sadly the two concepts blended together like oil and water. In fact, it could have easily been a great family movie if it weren't for the swearing, nudity, and gore (all of which contributed nothing to the overall experience). As a result the whole thing felt like a dumbed down B-movie with really good effects (which isn't bad if that's what you had intended to watch).
Lastly, this movie's theme was lost on me. Perhaps there wasn't one. It certainly lacked what District 9 and Elysium had, so don't expect any thoughtful commentary about Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, or South African street crime.

Ninja, and America, are just lying dicks.

Hugh Jackman's character is a maniac for NO reason.

And Sigorny Weaver's character, is suppose to be a huge business woman, yet misses a golden opportunity. (related to Jackman's character)

Things they just got wrong:

Jackman and Weaver's characters, try to pitch the Moose robot to the POLICE, when it's obviously better suited to the MILITARY.

The human brain/consciousness/whatever cannot be uploaded to a mechanical CPU like they showed, it's too complex, you would need a biologically based super computer/CPU.

I like Chappie himself, just not the movie so much.

The movie hurries from one scene to the next and the scenes are sometimes unrelated, sometimes messy, sometimes awkward and sometimes unintentionally funny. It feels almost as if the movie is made on the go without knowing where to go next..

Many characters seem like caricatures instead of real persons and it doesn't help that one key player is actually a rapper who plays at being gangster,(which is always cringe worthy) and the actors who can perform, like Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver are underused.
The movie has obviously too many characters and either Jackman or Weaver could have been left out, just like a choice should have been made between Dev Patel, Ninja(?) or Yolandi as the surrogate parent for Chappie.

Possible the worst aspect is that the story hinges on the fact that a developer of the firm that makes the robot police force, can make an artificial intelligence on his own, then can be hijacked by a bunch of losers to be forced to help them without the firm knowing and that another employee of that firm is able to shut down the entire robot police force single handedly for his own nefarious purposes.

A story needs us to suspend our disbelief, but if the required leaps of faith are too large, it falls flat on its face.
This is what happens with Chappie and it is a pity for there are interesting themes concerning consciousness and death, but these get snowed under by the drive to feed us cool action scenes and the idea that script writing is something you can do on the side..

The gag of having a robot speak in the gangster vernacular and strut around wearing chainsChappie is a reasonably entertaining movie, but there are times when it tried my patience and strained my suspension of disbelief pretty severely. The gag of having a robot speak in the gangster vernacular and strut around wearing chains that say "hustler" got old pretty quickly, and the lightning-fast jumps in capability and understanding toward the end of the movie left me very skeptical--even in the technology-rich future that Blomkamp presents, and even suspending my disbelief as a viewer as much as I could, it was a bit much.

I did really enjoy the struggle for Chappie's affection between Dev Patel, Ninja, and Yolandi. I was not at all familiar with Die Antwoord and their work until this movie, but I looked them up after, and I think it's really neat that they seemed to be basically playing their music personas in the movie; some critic reviews have criticized this choice, but even as an outside viewer rather than a fan, I loved their persona and dynamic. (It did make a lot more sense once I had watched a couple of music videos though.)

One of the things I enjoyed most in the movie was the set design. There was an incredibly interesting aesthetic, especially for the criminal hideouts. The place Chappie called home was this amazingly dreary, dystopian place with these gorgeous pops of colour and graffiti everywhere that somehow made it gorgeous. There were also really nice, small touches, like figurines of Cartman and Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo from South Park on the bedside table.

That said, I do think that the cast was a bit crowded. Our time and attention was split between a large number of main characters, which made the big name actors like Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver seem underused. There was an awful lot going on, and the big action scenes sometimes seemed to go on too long; to me at least, it would have been preferable to trim the shoot 'em up scenes and have more engagement with Chappie and his development, since that was the more interesting and unique part of the movie.

It was a big disappointment. First off, the good things. It has nice special effects, truly realistic, and the fact of just watching the robot Chappie is awesome, you can really feel for him.
Now. The two things I had the biggest problem with were the script and the tow actors that were Chappie's parents. They were absolutely horrible, I hated every single scene in which they were. Absolutely disliked them, and they should never be acting again. And I also hated the script, because most of the time it made Chappie being a gangster and talking horrible slang.
Nope, this wasn't anything I was expecting it to be.

My score could not be other than 5.The movie has Blomkamp signature: fast yet clever, good characters with enough development, that forces you to ride with the movie to get the whole scenario, and this was incredibly awesome. I think this was the first movie this year i cared about the characters, "good and evil", if there are any. But at the same time it gets so cheesy and vain that you can't believe it's the same movie. Chappie was a film with good intentions but nothing that Neill Blomkamp has shown us, despite having good characters, the story is mediocre, even with being in a good way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Entertaining movie, not as bad as I expected from the metascore. I was a bit surprised how quickly they switched from "consciousness is a miracle that is not understood" to "never mind, we can store it on a thumb drive". The villain was also pretty cardboard, and there was one instance of shocking violence. Chappie was adorable. Expand

The most fun time for me was when Chappie starts assaulting cars, that scene is hilarious.
But I conclude by giving the opportunity on the weekend, you may enjoy it more than I personally.

In a world where robot policemen are the norm, Dev Patel has created the worlds first robot with the ability to think for itself. For some reason his superiors aren't interested (why??) and before he can fine tune his creation it is stolen by a gang and is taught to act gangsta! Visually the film is excellent, where it falls down is in the script, storytelling and the acting. Plot holes abound, the security company at the heart of the story looks more like Wrexham Hogg from The Office, with security measures to match, and the acting of punk pair Die Antwood (in two lead roles) is truly appalling. Lets hope for his future films Blomkamp employs a script writer and story editor so that the rest of his films can match up to his stunning visuals. Expand

Chappie is a film of poor execution. Never in a movie have at times I cared for the a character and hated them so much.
