This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I consider a movie to be a 10 when I do not want to stop watching. Chappie is without equal in my opinion, which makes the critic's negative reviews just mind-blowing. It was fun, entertaining, heartbreaking, hopeful, and surprisingly realistic; pretty much everything you could ever want from a movie. I am certainly not a fan of Die Antwoord, but I feel like their portrayal of the slightly dim-witted, but seasoned Johannesburg gangsters in the near future, was pretty spot on. Yolandi and Ninja step into their roles flawlessly with the former naturally taking on a caretaker role and the latter being the one-track-mind gangster that sees Chappie only as a tool for survival.

The depiction of Chappie as a brand new consciousness in a fully functional, nearly-indestructible body, is as real as it gets from my point of view. The fact that humans and animals alike have to sacrifice all manner of brain power for physical development (and vice versa) makes the way that Blomkamp conceptualized Chappie's development seem much more likely. The movie also did a spectacular job with the most important theme of all, which is the notion of free will. Morality, love, hatred, and other similar ideas do not exist without real choice.

If you have seen 100 other movies this year, Chappie should probably be a solid 7/10 rating and at least in the top 20. If you do not watch movies very often or have no idea what a "Blomkamp" is then this movie should probably warrant at least a 9/10. Throw in Hugh Jackman "the guy from DARPA with a semi-mullet" and Sigourney Weaver "the tough, angry boss-lady who's too smart to give a weaponized robot sentience" and this movie comes out on par or above Elysium, Robocop, or any other movies that at least a dozen critics decided to compare it to.

Chappie for president!!

Finally a clever, thoughtful movie about artificial intelligence and robots. Finally a movie that doesn't judge robots as a "thing" in itself, but show how AI and robots are just what we humans make them.

Chappie isFrom an Engineer's and Computer Scientist's point of view, Chappie explores the ideas of computer intelligence, robots as tools, the basis of consciousness, human nature, mortality, creation, and many other important themes. Chappie is surrounded by realistic characters that have a desire to create better intelligence and people who fear computer consciousness, people who view machines as lovable and those who view them as merely tools. Chappie must sort through these views and face his own mortality just like any person would, without the over the top action of Transcendence or the muddled physics of time travel from Terminator. I have not only seen these themes examined, sometimes badly, in other pieces of art, but these are themes that real scientists and engineers are exploring with current technology, such as emotional bonding with robots based on vocal and facial cues. I eat this stuff up, and I hope that at the very least it will make everyone think about these themes in a meaningful way. I think much of the negativity toward this film is based on either not understanding the field of artificial intelligence or not identifying with what could be considered a "good" character, but I urge that even if you do not view robots as "human" that you at least consider all sides of the discussion critically. Even with an almostChappie is one of the most unique and compelling sci-fi movies that I've seen in years. I found it to be an engaging and enjoyable expereience from beginning to end, even if not all of it's elements felt fully realized. Even with an almost two hour running time, writer and director Neill Blomkamp seems to be struggling with getting everything out he wants to say with this film. Because of that some disjointed moments in the narrative occur and there is a slightly rushed feel.

None of that really ruins the movie though. It's title character assures that things stay afloat and highly enjoyable all the way through. Within moments of appearing onscreen "Chappie" will steal your heart. Watching him grow and learn about the cruelty of the world all while trying to find his own place in it while others keep trying to pull him in different directions makes up the majority of the film. It tries to raise some interesting and difficult questions along the way (like why did God make us if we are just going to die), but fails to capitalize on them enough to bring on true thought from the audience.

Luckily though the emotional element is not lost. Chappie is lovable in every way, and as far as I'm concerned, one of the most endearing characters in cinema history. Sharlto Copley's performance as him deserves to be praised. Without him Chappie would not have been able to come to life in the eyes and hearts of the audience.

That's not to say Chappie is the only character worth caring about. The rest of the cast is fantastic at playing their lovably oddball characters. Yolandi Visser in particular stands out as the second best character in the film after Chappie himself. Jackman makes for a fantastic and humorous villain. Watkin Tudor Jones and Jose Pablo Cantillo also deserve to be recognized. Unfortunately Dev Patel feels underutilized despite his character actually creating Chappie (he goes pushed aside for most of the film), and Sigourney Weaver's presence is barely noticed. Still, the cast is fantastic all around and it's hard to not love or enjoy their characters even if some of them are villains.

The film also owes a lot to it's unique style. The stylistic flair Blomkamp puts of display makes for a visually arresting film. Turns out the gangster style and sci-fi genre meld together very well. At least in Blomkamp's hands. The action is also meticulously shot and a thrill to watch.

The film even has a surprising sense of humor to it. It's not afraid to poke fun at it's own style. The goofiness inherent in some moments is excellently capitalized on.

It's pretty obvious while watching that the movie does have some issues. However they don't being the movie down much at all. These flaws that would have sunk a lesser movie are made irrelevant thanks to the creation of one the best characters I've ever witnessed in any movie ever. Chappie saves his own film and makes it one of the best of this year. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend that you do.

I give the movie a near-perfect score of 9.9/10.

But once I realized this was more a science fiction action comedy more than a political diatribe, I was pleasantly surprised.
Don't get me wrong, this is not a great movie by any standard, but it is extremely entertaining. In fact, I'd say it's Blomkamp's best in my books.
It doesn't take itself too seriously and decides to go for action comedy rather than half baked pseudo socio-political commentary.
The movie is at it's best when it embraces the silliness and fully goes with it, as the sappy drama and the social insight feel very unpolished.

Additionally, a lot of the acting from the Die Antwoord band members is sub par, and Hugh Jackman, plays a ridiculously artificial caricature of an antagonist. But as style rules over realism, these conflicts are easily ignored.

Not nearly as self serious, ridiculously moralistic or grotesquely caricaturesque as District 9 or Elysium, and a much better movie for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Short version: don't be discouraged by the negative reviews, give it a chance in the theaters and then decide!
Long version:
I get that it's not a perfect movie from an execution point of view, but i really don't think the reviews are doing this one justice.
Sure, there are some plot holes but it seems people are focusing way too much on that instead of focusing on the good stuff this movie has to offer. Chappie, the robot, is really charming, convincing and very well developed as he goes from toddler, curious child witnessing the wonders of the world for the first time to facing the harsh reality of life and ultimately becoming conscious of his own mortality and freaking out about it. Also, how the opposing outside influences of Deon as the book worm science guy, Yolandi as the nurturing punk mom and the semi-abusive gangster father figure of Ninja have a believable impact on Chappie's growing up and understanding of the world I found well done and very believable.
Sure, Yolandi and Ninja may not be the best actors in the world (they're not actors after all), but I personally think they play themselves in a way that services the film, with a few exceptions. Blomkamp clearly knew how to direct them and use them in the story and although some may argue they're a distraction and seem "stitched in", I took them as a well deserved dose of levity and color and an interesting couple set to raise a sentient robot.
There were some pretty funny scenes at some point, most memorably the "putting them to sleep" part, that gave the dark and violent 3rd act a much more personal undertone and more power. It's the old "get them to have some good moments so you feel for them much more when the beep hits the fan".
But what it boils down to, for me personally, is that this movie takes good SciFi concepts and portrays them is a better way and raises smarter questions about AI, consciousness, mortality and the difference between man and machine way better that any movie I've seen these last years. Certainly better than Transcendence witch was utter garbage.
Also, as a software engineer myself, I think this movie does a very good job of keeping itself grounded in reality from a computer science point of view. All the concepts used are things expected to become reality and are being worked on in present. That is what makes it a good SciFi movie first and foremost, mixing in just the right amount of Fi with a substantial amount of Sci to keep it believable. The substance is there, even if in order to get all the ideas on screen some of the character development was sacrificed making the characters seem one note of cartoon y. I'm sure they all have complex lives and reasons for doing what they do, but there's only that much screen time and you can't show all of that. Not excusing it, but I don't think it's a reason to damn this movie.
I'd put it on par with District 9, certainly better than Elysium. In this case I think the negative reviews are doing the movie a disfavor, there's nothing better out anyway, so why not give it a try and see if you like it for yourselves. And even if it bombs, this for me has the makings of a cult classic.

I couldn't disagree more with the people calling the movie, "A washed up version of district 9" or a failed remake of some other popular science fiction movie. The grit infused into the movie is almost tangible as Blomkamp finally delivers a believable dystopian South Africa. Hugh Jackman's performance is stellar. His role as a paranoid ex-military man was flawless. Niell shows a future South African drug gang society that is as much captivating as it is frightening while somehow dispelling needless violence. Even with an R rating for language and violence, none of it is misplaced. Character development was done well also, giving not just "enough of" an arc for every main character but instead completing their story in a fulfilling way. My only complaint has to do with the "gangster" sideways shooting method that Watkin Jones teaches Chappie in one scene. However I do not want to oversell the movie either. There's a few reasons I didn't give it a ten or even a nine.

But go see for yourself. You wont be sorry you did.

I am an avid movie viewer and watch several new movies a week. In the past 24 hours I ave watched American Sniper and Chappie in theaters. I didn't want to watch American Sniper because I assumed it was a movie made for rednecks, but after the slow beginning it was amazing and had me in tears, but that's for another review. My expectations for Chappie were not high. I listen to Die Antwoord and I was prepared to cringe at their acting and the overused plot. In brief, the movie was stupid and neat. Stupid neat. I enjoyed it. The target audience for this film are R&B lovers, gangsters by heart, nerds, cultured people that can put oddness aside, and people with an interest in technology. I can understand the mixed reviews because not a lot of people fit into these categories, and I would not recommend the film to these people. I fell under the near market, and the previous exposure to Die Antwoord market. This film is not going to win most original, best picture, or acting but as for a movie to go watch with a friend on a Saturday night, I give it an B+ or an A-. It exercised the mind and your inner gangster. After the movie I had pulled up Die Antwoord on Spotifiy and drove to their South African R&B beats and it was fun. There were plenty of cliches that are associated with this type of film, but among the recylced plot was its own touch of creativity. Their were vivid colors, not too much focus on stupid violence, and things that you won't see in any other AI film. There were plenty of silly plot wholes that act as conversation starters after the film, such as security protocol. So I would call this a social film. Go watch it with a friend that fits the markets. Expand

I was excited to see this since the 1st trailer I saw. marketing was solid as it wasn't constant bombardment of ads showing only the cool stuff. so its always surprising how the story unfolds, but then the critics, my god, the critics hammered this movie. I almost didn't want to see it. but it was perfect because when I eventually did see it my expectations were considerably lowered, and I was pleasantly surprised with a solid sci-fi future action flick. critics all said it was really blomkamp-y being filmed in s. Africa-again, but it actually wasn't as bad as elysm, which looked like they used the D9 set. it was gritty but it only added to the whole futuristic dystopian blah, blah, blah. having unknown actors was cool, I guess theyre actually famous for something, but ive never heard of them so it works out perfectly. s.african/English accent is brutal to listen to, but you get used to it as the movie goes on and begin to understand what theyre saying, chappie as a kid and learning was a dope idea for the movie, but the plot holes that came along with that story were the only downside to the movie. but chappie's development and personality were great. the critics made him out to be jar jar binx or something, but really was not that bad. silly in some parts but not outright annoying. the bad guy was basically the same bad guy as in D9, elysm. I mean really the same-exact-character. but aside from that I didn't see the whole Robocop comparison, I mean yeah the robots did look similar, but different story.
overall there were a lot of plot holes, but it was a good action movie. decent special effects, great story but a few too many stretches in the story were this movies downfall. its worth a watch.

PUUURFECT!

It's just the whole great things in this movie like being so messed up, like we don't know which one is right or wrong side anymore.
It feels like Nightcrawler. Then there's Wall-E feels... and Transcendence.
(It's extremely better than Transcendence! Come on, Critics! It's worth green score!)
Well, but Chappie gave me better enjoyment until ending, laugh-sad-thrill-confused-happy all the feelings. Stay still on my seat, that's a big deal.

The big star for the movie is truly Dev Patel. Well done.

3.5/5
For the climax ending (though there's hospital option, but well)
For the all feelings I experienced
For the music
For Dev Patel.

Its a sci-fi age and robot rules.

It came as a little surprise. Obviously I was looking for this film, but not expected to reach at this level. The film was really brilliant despite the influence of plenty of other films. Yes, the ideas were borrowed from the movies like 'Short Circuit', 'I, Robot', 'RoboCop', Real Steel', "Bicentennial Man', 'Transcendence', et cetera. But that did not bother me at all. I would call it an inspiration to make a new product out that already existed.

It was not completely depended on Dev Patel's role, otherwise woulda been a disaster. Its the Hugh Jackman, eventhough his character was not on the frontline, because of his presence, the movie was filled with some exciting and thrilling moment. His role was pretty much same to 'Real Steal', but showed in a different shade.

Silly concept, even dialogues were so stupid. I don't know, maybe because of the South African accent. But the screenplay was very good. Fast and gets the point quickly than wasting time for buildups. One of the best robot movie and it will be remembered. Looks like the sequel will be more furious and going to be an action packed item, if there will be one. Worth to watch it at least once.

What I loved in the movie was Chappie himself, he is the cutest in-human movie protagonist since E.T, and some of the best pats of the movie revolved around Chappie growing up, and I loved it. I also liked how Chappie represents Children living in places like South Africa or Rio, who, while pure at heart, are corrupted by money and the criminal lifestyle. However, there were many things I didn't like about the movie. I didn't like the gangsters who took Chappie away from his owner. I realize they are part of a south African rap group, but you never grow to love ther. their mean people who do despicable things to chappie, and while the movie tries to make you feel sorry for them, I never rooted for them through the whole movie. Other than that, i just think the plot and the scripting were little off, but i still enjoyed the movie. I would recommend this movie to any Sci-Fi fan, and even though its a bit underwhelming coming from Blomkamp, i'm still excited that he's directing the next Alien's movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Chappie is a science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp (director of District 9 and Elysium) and stars Sharlto Copley and Dev Patel. The premise of Chappie is very intriguing, a guy decides to build a sophisticated A.I. that can think and feel. This movie, however, takes an interesting turn. Instead of becoming this sweet and lovable robot, he becomes an a****** and a gangster and completely ignore's Deon (Dev Patel) while committing various crimes. But, the movie does do a great job of how showing how a child's mind is so easily influenced. However, there are some major issues with this movie. First of all, the actors who played the gangsters who raise Chappie (voiced by Sharlto Copley) are completely terrible at acting. I mean, like Razzie worthy. None of the lines they say have any emotional depth and they can be extremely over-the-top and annoying as hell. The other big issue is the pacing, which is a complete mess. Some parts feel slow and some parts feel fast-paced. But all-in-all, Chappie is a good and thought provoking science-ficton film that conveys how the mind of a child can be so easily bended. 7/10 Expand

Very entertaining, the ending was astonishing. I re-winded twice and saw the ending again and again the way he starts as an incomprehensible child and grows into this misguided teen into a mature adult is very meaningful. Recommend, muss watch.

A good film with some action in and an amazing storyline to it. The special effects in the film were also very good. Seeing the ending, I hope for a sequel to the film with more action in.

He just acts like an average human child so I bet those who say he's annoying don't even have kids. The movie could sometimes be a little ridiculous but at the same time, I found it enjoyable. I liked the way the character of Chappie developed ( acting at the beginning like a curious toddler before gradually behaving like a grumpy teenager). I'd listen to the users on this one. Good film. Calling it underdeveloped seems like a miss. I was confused by the need to drop in South African duo Die Antwoord into major roles within the film but they did fine enough to warrant belief in those characters and carry part of the narrative. Neil Bloomkamp has a great, consistent string of movies. They all feel a little familiar - futuristic but dirty (and it's generally through a South African lens). If a movie that walks you through the training of a robot as if it were an infant while offering some good action to keep things going, Chappie is really worth the watch. It's silly that critics couldn't feel the same. Expand

When the lead designers steals a damaged androids body in order to test his new A.I programme he finds himself wrapped up in the cities criminal underbelly. There is no mistaking Chappie for the work of any director other than Neil Blomkamp, and as ever the integration of computer generated effects and live action is superb. Other than Chappie himself however, the characters are pretty one note and not particularly interesting, and whatever social or psychological commentary it was aiming for was total lost on me. The result is a movie that, whilst still relatively entertaining, fails to match the heights of Blomkamp’s excellent District Nine. Expand

Super fun movie. Not typical. Its a fun take on I Robot. It has some drama too. Plot is not very intriguing, but despite that the movie is good. I recommend it. Besides, where else can you see Hugh Jackman getting pwned like that?

I hated the screen time of Sigourney Weaver and actually liked the screen time of Ninja and Yolandi.

I simply can’t comprehend this and maybe this is my bias as I work with AI as a data scientist. I found this movie to be absolutely astonishing, and emotionally moving. Their is a philosophical undertone that may go over your head if you take the movie as a face value action movie. But it’s really an incredible movie if you consider the philosophical implications. Yes everything isn’t explained but it was intended to be a sequel. I understand where the director is coming from. I’m deeply saddened that he won’t be doing the trilogy. I think a lot of humans are threaten by the idea that we will be replaced. It’s evident that the attachment to militarism and identity with a body as well as this story about consciousness can kind of impact perspective and feelings. I think the negative reviews are biased and sort of missing the point. I say this while hating most films that aren’t Oscar material or criterion collection. I’m a huge fan of film sometimes a snob. Found this emotionally moving to the point that I made an account just to talk about my perspective as a scientist who works with ai. Brilliant film deeply saddened that it wasn’t received well. But it was beyond its time. Expand

Throughout my life, I have watched a lot of films. Dozens, hundreds of films. Some are bad, some are good, but there is the movie "Chappie"
Of course, after watching so many movies, I have a list of favorites that has a special place for Chappie
The first time I saw it in the cinema was when it was released. On that day, I liked the film, but I could not call it "favorite"
After 7 years, I completely forgot this movie and watched it for the "first" time. After watching, I was shocked and with tears of joy, I brought it to the first line of my rating of films
This is all on the assumption that, in all the time, only one movie could make me cry, but those weren't tears of happiness, but Chappie did
I immediately went to look for the second part, but I was shocked when I didn’t find it, but I found information that the first part failed and the second part would not come out ... I had not been so shocked for a very long time. I try not to lose hope and continue to wait for the second part. Maybe in a year, maybe in 2, in 5, but I believe that she will come out
