I came here because RT is editing and manipulating audience reviews at the moment we speak, I think ppls deserved an fair honest review.
Captain Marvel is a average movie, nothing really stand out and nothing really bad, definitely nothing marvellous at all. It a decent stand alone movie but as the major key role of MCU next phrase this movie is a failure, lazy script, soulless acting and funny 10 years old logic, one the worst MCU introduction movie so far.

Waste of money and time and has made me completely disinterested in End game. Lord I hope they don't follow through with having Captain Marvel finishing Thanos or I'm done with the MCU and they can say goodbye to my money. I'm the lead up to release I thought the haters were just trying to get back at the actress for her comments but they were correct her character is uninteresting, her acting is abysmal, she has zero charisma and is extremely unlikable on screen. The film might have worked if The casting cerew had gotten the role right. If they want to continue with this character and have her effect the MCU going forward she needs to be recast or cut entirely. Expand

There seems to be some inconsistencies with the rest of the MCU films but will have to check them out to confirm. I struggled to enjoy this film even the jokes were misplaced as evident by the rest of the cinema not engaging either. I love any fantasy, sci fi spectacle but this fell short and couldn't keep me engaged. I think Brie Larson was miss cast in this role, I know she's a great actor but I think she does better in more dramatic roles, she was totally unconvincing as Captain Marvel and I struggled to invest in the character. Carol's relationship with Maria was difficult to accept or believe, there seemed to be no chemistry or emotional investment between them. I think Charlize Theron would have made a better Captain Marvel, she has the stature and gravitas that is required to bring the character to life.

Sam l Jackson was great as Nick Fury but what is the MCU without him, he seems to carry most of the film for me. However, the digital de-ageing was a bit hit and miss, sometimes it looked good but at other times it didn't even look like him at all which took me out of the moment on a few occasions.

Ben Mendelsohn was another highlight, he played the antagonist beautifully with a great menacing quality, the depth and believability of his character showed in spades.

The CGI again was also hit and miss, for the most part it was OK, not great. At times it was like watching a well rendered cut scene for a AAA PC game and other times, cartoon like, as I mentioned earlier it reminded me of Green Lantern.

This film was marketed as a feminist film fighting sexism (and Aliens), did this reflect the sexism of the 90's? At the time I was at UNI studying "Social Theory and Communications", basically a liberal left viewpoint and a big part of the course involved media manipulation, prejudice, sexism and critical theory so I was quite sensitive to any form of sexism. This film was more like sexism from the 80's where the older generation were still living in the world influenced by the 50's and 60's and were still using the phrases like "Smile, it may never happen" or "Cheer up". In essence Carol throwing off the shackles of patriarchy actually belonged in that time as by the end of the 90's, in the UK at least, equality was ingrained into society so status, rights, and opportunities between the sexes was on a level playing field.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was not entirely feminist propaganda but still had light touches to it. The things that bothered me was that Captain Marvel felt more like a Phase 1 film and didn't meet my expectation especially after the incident of Infinity War. This movie felt like it should have been released 10 years ago rather than now. Brie Larson as Captain Marvel didn't show much emotion or expression making me feel distant from her as a person and not easily likeable. Captain Marvel also reached the level of invinciblity at the end of the movie and I was not quite able to relate to the character. Other superheroes like Ironman and Captain America had flaws which every regular human can relate to but not with Captain Marvel.
Overall, it was a pretty average movie making this movie the third worst Marvel movie after Thor the Dark World and The Incredible Hulk.

And, if you ever wondered what Nick Fury meant (Winter Soldier reference) when he said "The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye" prepare for severe disappointment. What the hell is wrong with you Marvel?! You made a joke out of a serious character building moment from a previous MCU movie!

Most of the action choreography, visual effects and sound is competently crafted. Furthermore, one of the biggest and most surprisingly poor aspects of the film, is Brie Larson. The very talented actress, delivers one of the most unlikable, wooden, inconsistent and lifeless portrayals of a character that should be packed with charm and heroism. Story and villains are weak and forgettable. Captain Marvel lacks charisma and experiencing wild mood swings from stone face killer to snarky joker. Acting is sub-par and action scenes are passable. Samuel.L.Jackson and the Cat is there only for some comic relief.
Scarlet Witch, Wasp or Black Widow solo films would've been much more interesting. Captain Marvel is simply boring and you won't lose much if you skip that one.

TheA movie is meant to entice its audience with stuff that makes way for its characters to be explored. With Captain Marvel, one of the major issues lurks with this aspect and that's not helping it when we see the bigger picture in Endgame. The dialogues without the character being fleshed out felt out of place at many instances. The other major issue prevails in the messy structure and pacing towards the climactic build-up that leaves the viewers scratching their heads. The heroics marketing and capitalizing on its 'higher-further-faster' theme does not have enough justice or engage with the audience watching it. I feel this as a total wash-out with the already tested formula using the female led superhero aspect as its only true distinction from the rest and that to its unfair advantage. A clear disservice to MCU fans. Expand

Goose The Cat steals the show
Ben Mendelson as Talos the Skrull is a decent enough villain
Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury is great as usual

The Bad

Brie Larson is terribly miscast and seems to possess only one emotion, bored and disinterested
when she tries to be funny, it just comes across as forced and falls flat every time
Captain Marvel is too OP, and as a result, its difficult for people to relate to her
Nick Fury gets the idea for the Avengers from the name on the side of Carols fighter jet
a cat is responsible for Nick Fury losing his eye, A CAT
Shield acquires the Tessaract when the cat coughs it up on Furys desk, totally retconning the events of Captain America The First Avenger
men are portrayed as either bad or incompetent throughout the movie
during one of the fight scenes, a song is played that is supposed to be some kind of female empowerment, but is just cringe worthy

Probably the weakest of all the Marvel movies so far. It's not horrible and it does have moments where it comes together and becomes fun but they are pretty few and far between.
A de-aged Jackson does a really great job as young Nick Fury and like everyone else I liked the cat though it's mosty there for comic relief.
The biggest problem with the movie is that it really doesn't do anything with the premise. We get some interesting tid-bits to the backstory of the current state of the MCU but as a stand alone movie it absolutely fails at telling a self contained engaging story.
There are also some really annoying, in your face feminism moments but they arne't that many or overly long and if the rest of the story managed to hold my interest they would have been easy to overlook. As it is I'm really sad to say that Marvel really fumbled this one and I really hope that this movie isn't indicative of what we can expect for Endgame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was painfully average. Average is not necessarily a bad thing, but with Marvel you expect nothing short of the best. There was 2 gaping plot holes that I just didn't like, and I didn't like that Captain Marvel more or less became invincible at the end. Otherwise the CGI was amazing and there was a few funny moments in the movie that I enjoyed + the acting from Samuel L Jackson and Jude Law kept the movie up.

The shenanigans and politics from Brie Larson outside the movie will otherwise not do this movie and it's boxoffice run, any favors. She talked about inclusion and more seats at the table, but in the process she basically shat on almost 50% of Marvels fans (white males).

Tit For Cat.

Captain Marvel

Marvel's detour in this people pleasing franchise is a slave to the formula that every other installment is brimmed of. "A safe play" claims Marvel, and protected is, their MCU in the eyes of their fans. The contribution of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck; the co-writers and directors, is merely integrating to this formula. But what comes off disappointing, is that this time the textbook format is rotten to the core. You find yourself stealing moments from the film to enjoy. The mind games played by the writers- or so they think- is just one big hotchpotch that we are told to mug up as a thought provoking sci-fi genre tidbit. Not only it fails intellectually on raising the questions, the news-like answers delivered seems like a conspiracy to fill in a political satire where clearly it compromises the narration.

Speaking of which, the writing is often dull, with cheesy lines, daft conversations and a fatal attempt of invading humor in storytelling. Boosting off with an introductory action sequence, the characters are transparent as water when it comes to hide their duality. This off putting behavior of the makers where they are overprotective about their obvious flips and turns, is frankly annoying. After which, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) meets our host Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), a promising duo that had the brotherly romance between them to amplify the film.

Again, this equation is piled up by 1-0-1 comic writing, none of the small talks comes is smooth, their agendas are clearly visible on the screen. I would feel that this is the real culprit of the film, how bizarrely and easily deconstructive it is. So easy it looks, and yet so much effort it costs. The shape shifters theory comes in handy like the X Men's Mystique-ish cheats and tricks. Only once in the beginning it fools you with conviction while the rest of it grows predictable.

Larson in this glowing suit is way too ready for this job. Her calculative over thought out process is miscalculated, at least Gal Gadot owned the silliness. Her never-the-underdog dimension of the character is why we don't connect with her, there is no empathy for us to punch her that spaceship out of the sky. Jackson who had been fascinated on playing the early version of Nick Fury is as good as it gets when he is sharing the screen with a cat.

His words still sounds young and sort of amateur-ish but his body language can't hide the Jackson-ness in him. Jude Law and Annette Benning are victims of the worst aspects of the script, with wafer thin charisma or ambiguity, it is depressing to see this much potential thrown out of the window. How does it fit in the series? Aforementioned, obliged to connect the dots and mention the references, the film fails to stand on its own beliefs, its own content. I wish I could at least say that the Captain Marvel has the heart to look forward, it is busy reminiscing about the past, the result is, yes, sad.

This will be the first MCU film to get a fail score from me. I think Kevin Feige has dropped the ball ala Kathleen Kennedy doing the same with Star Wars VIII and Solo.

Related media: I have seen all of the MCU films but have not read the comics. The recent one, Ant-Man and the Wasp was also disappointing. I hope this is not a trend.

What's it like?: It tells the origin story of Captain Marvel and how she met Nick Fury, but in a confusing way as it is the main plot point.

Negatives: 1) The story is rather inadequate and is told in a sentimental and very slow way. There’s not much story at all due to the numerous flashbacks, and the story is not all that interesting anyway. 2) The action scenes are very limited and unimpressive. Check out the budget for the film and you will understand why. The fight and flight scenes are not special and are physically inaccurate as well. 3) How Nick Fury lost his eye is explained but the story is ridiculous and unimpressive.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: Average

Teens: Poor

Young adults: Poor Medium age adults: Poor

Old adults: Poor Rating: 2/5 (no half scores). Skip it. Don’t even bother watching it on the TV.

I really came in wanting to love this movie. I've seen every marvel film (some of them two or three times) and typically the origin story for a hero is my favorite part.
Surprisingly I was just bored throughout the film. The story is quite predictable and the stakes feel incredibly low. Once Captain Marvel gets a grasp on her powers she's completely unstoppable and it's kind of boring to see. There were a few interesting characters - nick fury, agent colson, a skrull and the cat of course.
I kind of just wanted to leave halfway through though which is something I never thought i'd say about a marvel film.
Oh a good tip - the mid credits scene is really great but the post credits scene is completely pointless and everyone in the theater who waited for it seemed disappointed. I won't spoil it, i'll just say there are no important characters in it at all.

For me it is #5 for the bottom 5, however I can see a few movies that it could be tied with, so safe to say it is bottom 10. Brie Larson may very well be an Oscar award winning actress, but she did not get it in comedy or action, and it shows. Her presentation of the character seems uncomfortable, like she isn't sure how to act the part. She presents Captain Marvel as very one dimensional, and this is in part due to the writing as well, so it is not all on her. However, her delivery of lines is bland, her jokes are dry and seem forced for her. Some were funny, but most didn't feel right. There were some cringe worthy moments in the film, even with the interactions between her and Samuel L. Jackson. Like they are almost forcing the concept that they get along. It took you out of the movie a few times. Because Brie Larson highly politicized this movie, the political moments stand out more to me because I was aware of it. I think if she hadn't been so political with it, these political moments wouldn't have stood out as more, but there were definitely at least a half a dozen hard eye-roll moments that felt completely unnecessary. The action itself was good, but anti-climactic. The big breakout moments for Captain Marvel were underwhelming and didn't quite get you in the feels. There was one moment near the end that could have been a large character development for her, and they may the decision to not act upon it so they can deliver another politically charged concept. However, I understand if they went the different route, that it may not make sense in as far as the character development didn't allow for it. You decide, but you'll know when you see it. She had two choices, and I think the other would have been better and made me cheer for her. The music is good, but sometimes out of place, and the 90s nostalgia isn't over the top. The writing really changes the source material and is disrespectful to the original characters with their changes. The first end credits scene is also a letdown when you see it. It is almost disrespectful to Marvel comics and the Avengers as well. You can guarantee that we will see it mentioned in Endgame as well.

The created some continuity issues as well with Captain America being the first Avenger, as he is called, set in the 40s and this film, as you will see in the end credits scene. As well as minor ones with Agent Coulson and SHIELD in this movie versus him and SHIELD in the first Iron man film which is set after this film. Again, I put it on the lazy writing but also Marvel studios for not catching these things which they have done so well on continuity with their other 20 films.

You won't be wasting your m
oney seeing it in the theatres, but you also wouldn't be missing out if you waited to watch it another way.

Finally, there is a twist in the film that when it happens, (and if you know marvel comics and their next big cross-over event), it will confuse you on how they will justify the next big "Avengers 4".

Unfortunately Brie Larson did not embody the hero in this film. Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark, Chris Evans IS Captain America, Chris Hemsworth IS Thor, Benedict Cumberbatch IS Dr. Strange...Brie Larson does not necessarily have to be Captain Marvel and would probably serve the character better if she was recast.

This is a very bland and unexciting film. The real issue was that Captain Marvel had no discernible personality or emotions and so I had no investment in her character.
The rest of the cast did a fine job, Ben Mendelsohn’s was the stand out performance for me and Samuel L Jackson as always oozes charisma and presence from every pore. Bree Larson is a talented actor, so I can only imagine that she was either poorly directed or just miscast in the role. I can’t really understand how she managed to give such an unconvincing performance.
Otherwise the story was pretty standard stuff with a plot twist you could see coming a mile off. The action wasn’t very well done or exciting. I thought the cat was a novel touch and I enjoyed Fury’s interaction with it.
Overall it was a disappointment and Marvel will need to do a lot better if they intend to have Carol Danvers helm the franchise.

There are some good visuals, the villain is solid, young Fury is fun to see, and hey that cat was a solid addition. It also isn't a good film. Very few of the professional reviews are praising Larson in the role. That is because she just isn't that good. "Hey she is an Oscar winner, you can't say that." Just because she won an award for a very particular role doesn't mean every single thing she does is gold. She was miscast for this role. The concerns about her having a flat persona on screen sort of played out. There are solid elements to the film, but when your lead isn't one of them reviewers should be ashamed for giving the movie 8,9,10 ratings. I'm not hating on the film because "it has a strong female character." I just calling a spade a spade. If this had a male character as the lead many reviewers would point out this is standard fare that Marvel turns out each year and is nothing special. The film is fine. It is much closer to Thor Dark World than it is to Winter Soldier. Expand

As well, it didn't help that some scenes felt like they were from a few different movies and fan edited to create this new narrative. As a whole, it just felt like it didn't have its own identity, didn't develop the characters in a meaningful way, and serves as a ret on stepping stone to create a Marvel Keanu Reeves archetype where the audience can project themselves onto the character instead versus it being someone else's epic story that they get to see.

I've read about 30 of each and it I feel like most of the negatives are "bombing" it at 0 or 1, while most of the positives are diehard fans giving it 10 just to try to balance out the negatives. It is nowhere near a 0 or 1 (worst movie you've ever seen); equally, saying it is a 9 or 10 is a joke. Using a theme from the movie, I think people are writing more with emotion here than honesty in mind. Captain Marvel is not that bad of a movie. However, it's also not that good.

Personally, when I go into an action movie, I just expect to be entertained. I'm the type of guy who can watch a movie like Transformers or Ready Player One and I don't really care how the acting is because it's fun and visually cool. I like dramas too and I'll go watch one of those if I want to see outstanding action and human emotion. Take from that what you will. No, the acting was not very good in Captain Marvel. The highlights were (as others have mentioned) Samuel J. as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the villain Talos. In my opinion, Brie Larson's performance was not *horrible,* but it definitely left something to be desired. If I could call it anything, I was say it was "inconsistent." She seemed like she brainstormed several characters for Captain Marvel and couldn't decide which one she wanted to use. The very emotional parts of the movie felt forced, and I found it hard believing that the character was being challenged. She also has a lot of witty lines that fall flat. It very much seems like she was trying to be another Tony Stark, but lacks the charisma to pull it off.

I thought the action and visuals were cool and the portrayal of alien planets was really neat. I don't know why everyone is knocking the fight scenes, because there were some decent ones that were pretty fun. I think more people were annoyed by the corniness or unconvincing smugness of Larson's character in those scenes and didn't focus as much on the action. I don't *think* this is a spoiler since a lot of it is shown in the trailers, but there is a part where Captain Marvel becomes so powerful that the fighting really lacks suspense or surprise. However, I still thought it *looked* cool, so I'll give it that.

I like "corny action movies." The main thing that destroys an action movie for me (and I think will for most here) is "cringe moments." Everyone knows what these are for them personally, so I won't go into what makes something cringey. I consider myself VERY affected by cringe moments compared to the average person. I could barely get through Batman vs. Superman or Justice League because of how cringey they were. Personally, I didn't think Captain Marvel was that cringey; many will disagree with me. Brie Larson's acting is hard to believe, but not horrible. As for the much-maligned "feminist" parts of the movie, they felt a little forced, but again I didn't think they were cringey or movie-ruining. There is a "girl power" fight scene that is corny and out-of-place in the movie: that was probably the worst one for me. I didn't find the movie to be "man-hating" like others did, but I don't think it was effective in getting a positive feminist message across.

One more thing to mention is the 90's nostalgia theme. This portrayal feels a lot like Brie Larson's acting: acceptable, but kind of fake and forced. I can't remember what exact year they said it was in the movie, but it felt like they were all over the place with their dates and themes. Cars, clothing, and hair styles all seemed very early 90s. Music was more late 90s, and there were some other inconsistencies. As anyone who has lived through the 90s can tell you, it was a very diverse and changing decade, and the directors couldn't decide which part to focus on. I don't think it "took away" from the film, but it failed to scratch the nostalgia itch they were going for.

TL;DR: Captain Marvel is an average (not terrible), unspectacular action movie, with a mediocre main lead, problems with directing, but some memorable and fun action scenes and supporting performances. My recommendation: Marvel fans should wait for the video release to see it. All other viewers can probably skip it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain marvel IS NOT for comic book fans or fans of the mcu or more specifically, men(especially white men) its for feminists. After captain marvel spares with yon-rogg, the viewers are quickly bombarded with feminists viewpoints like her being constantly told "she's not good enough (by men) she's not strong enough( by men) she's told she's too emotional (mostly by men) she should smile( that's patriarchal oppression committed by men in this movie) even as she gets into a fighter jet she's told(it's called a" cock pit for a reason) due to larsons constant feminists beliefs, these scenes only serve as a reminder to the male audience watching that she does in fact have a problem with men..... That aside, how good is the captain marvel movie? Well to be honest, it doesn't deserve a 1 neither does it deserve a 10, its a subpar and mostly dull ride through the MCU. The problem with captain marvel is that it has way too many glaring problems people praising this movie just cant see, for one, monica rambeau is a child!? Really? For all of brie's activism about getting women of color starring roles in films then by all rights, monica rambeau should of been( like in the comics) should have been the star, not a child who looks up to carol danvers who comes AFTER monica in the comics in taking iver the role of captain marvel.

Brie larsons acting in this film is arguably the biggest failing in this movie as she shows little to no emotion besides a ghost eyed mad face expression and a wierd spooky smile, remember the scene where the neighbor knocks on the door and captain marvel thinks its talos? Yeah... That scene was horrible because it was set up as comedy but brie couldn't pull it off since she used that same face expression throughtout the movie, in fact, many scenes designed as comedic relief just fell short like when she yelled back at the skrull warriors with her tongue hanging out.... Smh that was just awful. Another failing of the captain marvel movie was the portrayal of mar-vell who's a woman, now if it wasnt for larsons in your face activism, most fans would have looked over this retelling of mar-vell BUT instead, mar-vell being a woman has the distinct smell of women good/man bad feel. Marvel studios did the fans bad in pushing an agenda when the fans and regular crowd just wanted a great comic book movie.

The story makes little sense aslo, like how she got her powers, she blew up an engine that used the some of the tesercact powers? And she's the strongest hero? Scarlet witch was literally infused with the reality stones powers but captain marvel is the strongest? Ok we can let that slide BUT theirs also many continuity errors that basically ends up rewriting VARIOUS MCU plots like captain america, how the teseract was found, fury not knowing about the it, his eye being taking out by a cat etc, it just feels like they just shoehored in an unlikeable character for feminists. Since thats the main narrative and driving point of this movie, you'll never connect emotionally with the character, speaking of character, fury is NEEDED to get through this two hour movie and its shown nearly throughout the movie that due to brie larsons dry acting, shes almost ALWAYS with someone, she doesnt have the acting range to truly go solo in this movie.

And now, the biggest flaw in this movie, she's a mary sue character. Throughout the movie there's NO sense of danger, threat or otherwise that even remotely slows down captain marvel. Every scenario she's in, save for the one where she's captured early on, she just overcomes all obstacles like it's nothing, this fact is truly exacerbated when she gets access to her true powers as she whips out overwhelming power blasts after another. She EASILY defears yon-rogg who also posed no threat to her, flies just by thinking about not smacking the ground then literally stops missles the size of skyscrapers with ease, blows up even bigger war ships then proceeds back to earth and one shots rogg and draggs him off to his ship to deliver a message to the supreme being. This is POOR character development or rather NO character development. There's literally nothing in this movie that puts captain marvel in danger which is just sad since heros are defined by loss and struggle even poor decision making and marvel doesnt known of that. The best thing about this movie is sam jack, the cat and ronan the accuser being in it, everything else is mediocre at best

There was some very blatant virtue signaling, but it was not to the point that it overshadowed the movie. What didn't work was there was NO character progression, tired sexism memes, and you never felt attached to the character. Samuel L Jackson and the Cat did well. There was good splashy special effects you come to expect from Marvel, however there was none of the resonance with the character that you felt watching almost any of the other Marvel movies. All in all I find it on par with Thor Dark World... not the worst movie I've seen but it's definitely one of the worst Marvel movies. Expand

Carol is not my favorite hero, but I've bought some comic runs and tend to like her. Then I heard the final casting choice. "Wth are you thinking, Marvel?" was my reaction. "Could they not put a wig on a wooden board, cuz thats the amount of talent she's got." And now the movie arrives, she's made some, ahem, unfortunate comments, but I still go to see it. I don't want to say it's a disaster, because it's not the worst MCU movie, but it's definitely not the best and anyone who says so is lying for some weird reason of their own. Brie gives a flat performance, because that's what she does. She's emotionless and dull. On the other hand, the script is a wandering mess that doesn't know what it wants to be or where it wants to go. Toss in some horrible missteps that are the opposite of source material. Mar-vell is not a woman and has never been. To randomly make him a female background character is a total travesty and a slap in the face of long time fans. Finally, we have great performances by Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Jude Law and the woman who played Monica Rambeau. But the movie has no clear villain. I expected Secret Invasion, but got some weird... I don't know what I got, but it wasn't good. Not a Marvel movie I will own or watch repeatedly and I've worn out several of them. (I've bought Captain America, Thor and Avengers all several times because I've watched them enough to wear out a disc) I might watch this one from time to time on a streaming channel (Disney +??) but honestly, bad writing aside, brie Larson was horribly miscast and marvel should have known better. Katherine Winnick would have been an amazing choice. Expand

I almost wish her character was bad/quirky, so at least she could have jokes made with her, and the avengers cast, but she's a bland character.
(She has no ambitions/goals, no dislikes/fears. People point the way, and she goes.)

Plot is average.
With some fixing to the script, it could have been better.
With some better acting on brie's part, and another woman's part, it could have gotten quite emotional, even with the script as is.

The jabs at men were kept somewhat to a minimal, and the focus was less on the men, but the idea of "You can't do it". (Which was the best way to deal with the issue, despite not being placed well in the movie)
But these scenes dont fit in the story, due to how the main character doesnt fail at anything, nor had to struggle to achieve anything.
Suddenly at the end, it almost tries to bring that message back, but comes off corny, and out of place.

While not a bad movie, I cant help but disagree with Brie's/Marvels attempt to badmouth males for the sake of trying to promote this movie, and hold off until womens day, to see if that would raise sales.
I'd say read a synopsis of the movie, but dont pay to see it.
But if you do see it, you wont feel cheated by it, but you probably wont find it very good. (It would be entertaining to a teenager or someone who just wants to see action, and not think on the situation much.)

(Improved script could have added 1-2 points, and improved acting on the 2 actresses, would have added 1-2 points. It really could have been a 9/10 movie!)

The trailers didn't particularly get me that interested for this movie, but riding the Endgame Hype I felt like I needed to see it anyways. Let me say that you can skip this movie, it's not required for Endgame.

Brie Larson had some decent movies in the past so I was hopeful she could pull off this character, but she just didn't feel right for the role. When she was on screen I didn't see "Captain Marvel" I just saw an actor playing the character. Compare this to Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, in their movies you don't see them as Actors playing the characters, you just see the characters because their personality is perfect for it. This is the problem for Brie Larson, she doesn't seem to have a personality in this. Most of what we see if her is either a deadpan expression or a snarky smile which just feels so forced most of the time.

I did like how Nick Fury was portrayed, and him and Carol Danvers do have a few decent moments on screen. Some points felt like it was a Buddy Cop movie, which were some points I personally enjoyed.

Goose the cat had great moments on screen (There's one part which makes the Bruce Banner introduction scene in "Avengers" much funnier), and Mendelson was another casting member I enjoyed seeing on screen.

That was most of the good things I have to say about the movie, now lets get into some of the bad without talking spoilers. CGI was meh, and looked incomplete in a few areas. Carol Danvers is a bit of a Mary Sue, and doesn't really go through much of a character arc. It kinda feels like it's more of a straight line.

There's one action scene that's set to the song of "I'm Just a Girl" which honestly made me cringe a bit. Speaking of action scenes... The camerawork in this movie during action scenes felt so off. If you've seen the movie you probably know what I mean. Especially during the later points, it never seems to focus completely on the action.

This movie has multiple retcons and plotholes which I can't go into detail specifically due to making this a spoiler-free review, but it feels like they're really trying to shoehorn in Captain Marvel at this point. They're trying to forcibly bend the MCU around her character, which I'm worried about if all movies with her are like this one. Her character is constantly said to be the "Most Powerful" in the MCU, which I felt they shouldn't have done. They're trying to force people to care about this character, which I just couldn't do at any point during the movie. Also, there was one scene with Nick Fury which made me absolutely furious. You know which scene I'm talking about if you've seen the movie. It completely makes one of his badass lines in The Winter Soldier into a **** line. That in it's own made me lower the score from what would have been a 5.

The movie wasn't overly-saturated with Feminism like I was expecting due to the marketing, but there definitely were some moments that I said "Yep, that's a feminist point." It wasn't my biggest complaint, but it was enough to make me roll my eyes a few times.

My verdict: 2/5. It had some charm in moments, but fell flat in many moments which killed any enthusiasm I had before. By the time the final act came around, I was honestly just hoping for it to be over. Not a movie that I'd go see again or buy, but it isn't the absolute worst of the MCU. It's a "Meh" movie, and IMO towards the bottom 5 or so. It's not a failure of a movie, but a failure of a Marvel Movie given they have a reputation for high quality these days.

If you haven't seen it yet, wait until it comes to Netflix or Redbox, it isn't worth going into theaters to see.

The supporting cast REALLY carry this movie. I think Bri Larson was good, in specific scenes, but overall, not great collectively in this film. She felt "medicated", if you will, by showing no emotion through some of the climax of the movie. It is strange saying this, given that she has won an Academy Award for leading actress, but she forgot how to act in this film.

The end picks up and leads right into End Game, so Marvel fans MUST see this movie. My true review is a 6.5/10.

Being a comic book movie based in fiction I guess their world they wanted to create was a one were men treat women like **** In my own life we respect all people but I don't live with only progressive dems so maybe that's why i don't see this kind of abuse.
other then the forced ideology, I don't see any emotion from Miss Marvel, her jokes fell flat, her chemistry seemed forced with Furry. I feel like they missed a few opportunity to show more of early S.H.E.I.L.D and furry and Coulson and maybe some more incite to who they are. The thing that i dislike the most is that Miss Marvel, is that she seemed to not be excited/impressed about anything, It was like when she went full power she already knew it was it was possible, or her acting was so bad she couldn't make us believe she is the Hero she claims to be.

How did it fare?

To begin, let me say that this film does have its merits and has a reasonably strong first act. While the acting of its lead, Brie Larson, was by and large underwhelming and flat throughout, others such as Mendlesohn and Jackson brought their usual A-game. The effects were well done, and the score was immersive and unique, standing apart in a great way from its fellow MCU entries. Sadly, these stronger elements of the film were not enough to hold up the weight of its weaknesses, of which there was plenty. The most glaring issue for me would have to be the weak-to-nonexistent story arc of its primary character, "Vers" / Carol Danvers. She started the movie assertive, determined, confident, and strong and ended the movie... assertive, determined, confident, and strong. But hey, she got more powerful! So there's that. Apart from this, Brie Larson's performance falls disappointingly flat, leaving scenes (one with her mentor, in particular) which could and should have been powerful moments in the film feeling hollow and unaffecting as a result.

The general plot of the story has a solid outline but is inadequately fleshed out, leading to a few plot holes. The screenwriters' neglect in this area has also led to the creation of the first noticeably glaring continuity errors in the MCU (conflicts with some of Nick Fury's words and actions from earlier MCU films, places kinks in the explanation of what happened to certain pivotal elements from other movies, etc.), which Marvel has up until now managed to smoothly avoid. Character development feels somewhat lacking with some supporting characters, and the friendship between Carol and Maria is entirely unconvincing, leading me to wonder if the lead role was simply miscast, or if the problem goes deeper than that and falls more on the shoulders of the director. Regardless, the end result is unfortunately the same. Fight scenes, which we as an audience have come to expect from the MCU to be nothing short of a gloriously and smoothly executed spectacle, are frustratingly dark and filled with enough jump-cuts to induce a migraine. There's one scene in particular of Vers chasing and battling an opponent in and on a train which is cut so excessively and jarringly that it nearly rendered any fight choreography needless. This, in my opinion, is unforgivable in an action film, much less a superhero blockbuster. They can do and have done so much better. So what happened here? Captain Marvel, despite being a historically bottom-shelf Marvel character that has never quite seemed to find an audience in Marvel Comics (it's reportedly been rebooted 5 times in only 6 years), had potential. Sadly, that potential seems to have been squandered by attention that should have been directed toward penning a cohesive story and casting the right talent being instead tragically directed toward advancing a feminist agenda c/o virtue signaling by the MCU and Disney in an effort which screams, "We have our Wonder Woman, too!" But they don't, really. They could have, but in the end, this proves to be simply too contrived of a work to even compare. With a bland performance by its lead, a seemingly rushed script, choppy and hard to follow fight scenes, and a lacking character arc for its namesake, Captain Marvel's pros flimsily crumble beneath the weight of its politically-charged cons. Here's hoping if it gets a sequel, the filmmakers will have learned from this and will then choose to focus more on telling a compelling story and getting solid performances from its players. Stop trying to create a "strong woman character" and just write a solid character who then shows us she is strong by virtue of her actions. Put the horse before the cart. The story will be all the better for it, and as we all know, that's all that matters. It's why we go to the movies, after all: everyone loves a good story.

To start with the film is far too predictable. In my opinion brought Captain Marvel out too late, it's based not too long before the first Iron Man and while the film does clear up a few storylines as well, it is still too predictable. It reveals how Fury lost the use of his eye and is an origin story for Phil Coulson of sorts. However, the only part that truly stood out to me and made it a good film was the few scenes with Fury and the Flerken. Brie Larson played the character as well as the script allowed her and along with Samuel Jackson they made the movie what it was, they make a great acting team and character team but overall the script was poor and predictable. The film score was good, but the song choice during the closest thing this movie had to a climatic battle was met with an audible groan from the audience. I am a huge Marvel fan and a fan of superhero movies. I was surprised when they announced this character as a solo movie as it is and was not a very popular one. There could have been so many female strong characters to choose from such as Black widow, spider-woman, she-hulk scarlet witch etc. Saying that, this is what Marvel choose and what we are “stuck” with. I was bored at times and definitely would not watch it again. Like most fans, I can’t wait for End Game. I just hope that Marvel doesn’t stick with the plan of having CM as the saviour or even having a large role. I would prefer she not even be in it at all. They could learn from this mistake and take this opportunity to bring in another new female hero ( if this is what they want) or just use an existing one and build her character. Disappointed in this movie and in Marvel and hoping like heck that they will make up for it in future movies such as End Game. Thank you. Oh and 1 more thing, please try to stick more closely to source material.. Thanks again. Expand

Samuel Jackson (Nick Fury) adds a great aspect to the film being very funny and cool. There are some genuinely entertaining parts of the movie that I enjoyed. But unfortunately, most of what makes the good parts of the movie are the supporting actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, the girl that plays Monica Rambeau, and even the cat. Ignoring the controversy around Brie Larson, she just isn't a good cast for the character. She looks uncomfortable in her skin, and she looked like she had to remind herself she's a superhero or a member of a galactic police force. She was trying to strike heroic poses for half the movie, which was extremely awkward, and it takes the audience out of the immersion. You are reminded you are watching a superhero movie, and not an actual superhero. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While the character of Captain Marvel is enjoyable to watch, telling Earth-people she is from space with an almost reckless amusement compared to, say, your standard Star Fleet officer, the world around her seems lazy and un-immersive. Right from the get-go, we are only permitted to see Hala through a high-up window. This is the opposite of immersive. Alita let us walk the streets of her city. Really, we should have been given a chance to walk with Carol to one of her training sessions at Hala's ground-level--and see the skrull propaganda on the billboards!

This crime is repeated throughout the movie. We barely get a sense of Maria's house, for example, because the setting is barely introduced; Carol magically appears there instead of actually ENTERING the setting. We should follow her as she approaches the house, seeing her emotions as she sees the letterbox etc.

What does this all amount to? A greater focus from the audience on the clunky scene transitions, odd pacing and technical works behind the movie, because we cannot get into the world itself.

I read comics for almost 20 years, I saw all the marvel movies and all tv show (except inhumans), I found this film at best mediocre, and had moments of pure frustration.
What I liked:
Samuel L. Jackson's acting was very good, Stan Lee's tribute and cameo, Ben Mendelsohn and CG.
What i dislike
Brie Larson's performance (not all, but most, she seemed bored for most of the movie), 99% of the jokes, the genderswap of an iconic character (Mar-Vel), the predictable twist, she is very OP, the origin of the avengers name (completely ridiculous), the Kree vs. Skrull "war", Skrulls being the "immigrants", how Fury lost his eye, Fury just being a **** when woman is around (the scene with him and Photon was cringe AF) .

and about the politics of the film: yes, they have a feminist / man (white) hate moments, it's not the same level as ghostbusters but not that subtle, especially the flash backs, all white man telling her she is not good enough and she should quit and the biker scene.
Now I'm worried about Avengers: End Game, if the CM defeats thanos or has more screen time than the original cast, I'll never spend money again to see another marvel movie.

The story is flat, the dialogues third-rate. The characters also lack depth, the potential of all actors wasn't used. Moreover, the cool and more pithy interpretation of Captain Marvel was more appealing. I thought it was great that they didn't try to incorporate the typical girlish stereotype, as it was the case with Wonder Woman-Movie or Supergirl-Series, for example. The cool emontionless nature of Brie's acting as Marvel has often been criticized. With a male role this would probably not have been of any consequence. Here the expectations are still very antiquated. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain Marvel was a movie. Yes that is a fact. Brie Larson portrayed Captain Marvel in the movie another fact. Samuel L Jackson was in the movie as Nick Fury my last fact. Now let us move on to opinions. From the opening scene of Captain Marvel to the closing credits the emotional ride was stagnant. There were moments of action and levity but at no point did I feel that there was any real struggle or worry about the outcome. This I believe is due to the knowledge that this picture was taking place in the past and the characters that make appearances in the film and appear in movies later in the timeline ment that nothing terrible would happen to them. As differing characters make their way on screen and are recognized fore knowledge takes away from this story. This makes the tension in some scenes forced and unbelievable. There is very little worry that a character’s life or existence is at risk because I know they will be in the same position or present in Avengers or Iron-man or Maybe in a chronological viewing of the MCU you could argue that an individual with no prior knowledge of the story ars or their players would have greater enjoyment viewing the film. Unfortunately for the majority of fans seeing this film whether they admit it or not the risk vs reward is just not there.
The character of Carol Danvirs is a very good character in the comics with a rich back story and internal struggle for who she was is and wants to be. The depiction we get in the movie is a very watered down version that never makes me root for her to overcome the bad guys. I do not blame Brie Larson for this entirely a lot of the blame falls on the pedestrian character development and dialogue written for her to work with. Now had she spent a weekend researching the character and tried to work the back story and wealth of character development into her portrayal I am sure that we would have had a better reception from audiences. SPOILERS BELOW.

The story of how she was rescued by the Kree and the Kree nursed her back to health and she has no memories of her prior existence along with the, I guess we can call it a, neural inhibitor had me scratching my head. The source material puts Captain Mar-vell as a scout to see about the technology level of the planet and he protects the planet then blood transfusion to Carol and wham bam she has super powers. In the film she obtains the power from the cosmic cube (tesseract) via a light speed engine explosion built by a renegade Kree scientist trying to end the Kree-Skrull war. While the Kree are the true villains of the film we are led down a rabbit hole where the Skrulls are the aggressors. This flies in the face of sixty years of cannon in the Marvel Universe. The appearance of Ronan and his attack against the earth that Carol defeated by playing Missile Command. This one sequence was absolutely enjoyable and whomever pitched the idea deserves a raise. Let's now talk about the cat. Just cause it looks like a cat don't mean it is a cat. Today it's a Flerkin what the heck is a flerkin well cross a tabby cthulu and a pocket dimension and you get a Flerkin. Goose, the Flerkin, is adorable and the kinship with Nick Fury is great. And now we know what took Nick's eye.
Agent Coulson was disappointing and I love both the character and Clark Gregg. How such a monumental experience involving the skulls and the kree how was he clueless in Agents of shield? The continuity of the characters knowledge is broken by this movie but ok I can accept that minor issue.

So over all I would recommend people to watch this film. Hate Brie Larson if you want but I am a believer that the MCU draws from the previous movies. If you didn't watch Black Panther and had little knowledge of the Marvel canon Infinity War would be confusing as hell. So go watch this knowing it matters for the end of the Avengers storyline. So movie as a standalone film sucked but it is needed for the overarching story we have been experiencing for 10 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain Average:*Contains Spoilers*

This movie suffers from a lack of character development and a lackluster performance by Brie Larson. I feel the feminist agenda was over blown by the media, while there are a lot of feminist undertones in the movie the only one that really takes you out of the movie is the musical score, you have TLC, Spice Girls, No Doubt, Garbage and many more female bands which definitely makes it feel forced in that aspect. I don't think any of this would've been an issue if Larson and the media didn't tout the movie as such. I'm pretty sure Brie Larson forgot how to act in this movie, she's rigid, looks cold and disinterested and moves extremely stiff in the majority of the movie. This is distracting because I became fixated on her posture and facial expressions (or lack thereof) because I wanted to see emotions when situations would get thrown at her. Larson handled every adversity by standing up, after getting knocked down numerous times, giving the same "blue steel" look and overcame it. Her best scenes were when she and Jackson were playing off each other and they actually looked like they wanted to be in the movie.

This lackluster performance by Larson creates the biggest fault in the whole movie. Her lack of any emotion, facial or body, creates a problem when you see her dealing with her past and interactions with other characters including her enemies. I never could feel empathy towards her character, I couldn't feel what she was going through when she kept watching her role model die in dreams and even when she finally remembered how it all happened. The issue with her not showing any emotion is I never see that character grow and I might as well have been watching a terminator in the role of Marvel. This movie tells you Marvel is a strong woman by standing up multiple times after being told she couldn't do it (I think every time was by a man)and having that "blue steel" look on her face and then doing it. Without giving Marvel any emotions her character is never seen as weak, frustrated, mad or sad there's nothing to connect the audience to and it really kills the whole movie because as an audience member, how am I or anyone supposed to root or feel excited when we're watching and not feeling any dread of how is she going to get through this when you know exactly what she's going to do: stand up, give that blank expression and win.

I don't feel that overall this movie is bad, it's average with it's story and it needed more goose killing baddies for sure. The supporting cast with Jackson and Mendelson make up for quite a lot of flaws. Fighting was average at best as well as were most of the action scenes, I do think that the best fight scene was at the beginning with Vers and Rogg sparring. The story behind Jackson losing his eye and how he came up with the name Avengers was extremely disrespectful to Fury's character and the rest of the Avengers that have made this universe what it is today. This movie added little to the overall Infinity story and you could just feel this character was forced into the MCU for whatever reason and is trying to fill a few plot holes. If you are wanting to know how it ties into Endgame: she answers the "communicator" and meets up with the Avengers that are left. You're welcome as I just saved you 10-15 bucks on a ticket. I would not be at all surprised if this movie is on Netflix in 3 months.

I was expecting more from a marvel movie. Instead, it was a mediocre show albeit decent
storyline. I wasn't able to relate with captain marvel as if the character herself wasn't brought
to life. However, i do commend the actors such as Jackson and to a lesser extent jude law for
keeping me entertained.
After sitting through for almost a 2 hour movie, i was still puzzled and a little confused on
captain marvel's personality. Lots of time i find her lack of expression and stoic face unnatural.
I kid you not, i was under the impression that captain marvel was for the most parts constantly
'aware' of the camera presence while shooting if you know what i mean. If any case, her
expression left me feeling odd.
On a side note, i did like some humor brought by the film such as the cat. Action however was
not as CG packed like other recent marvel movies. Was it because this is set in a retro time?
I'm unclear.. The action part wasn't exciting to keep my adrenaline pumping. Nevertheless, the
movie is still a decent one but not great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. BL really lacked charisma in this movie. When I first saw Iron Man, I could not imagine anyone else playing TS. When I first saw Thor I couldn't fathom another actor other than CH playing the Norse warrior. Same with Cap, and every other amazing casting choice. But in this movie, I could easily think of 5 actresses who could've embodied the role as well or better. As for the first half of the movie--it's so darkly lit I couldn't make out a lot of detail. Her story arc of trying to find and remember her identity seemed disjointed and jangly. The problem with this plot device occurred to me half way through: WE ALREADY KNOW WHO SHE IS. SO, we didn't go on the journey with her.
At the end, she finally realizes she is SUPER, SUPER powered and invincible and can breathe in space and can destroy starships by flying through them and astonishingly doesn't destroy the rest of the bad guys and faces no real threat. Thus, she literally has no where to go because not only has she broken the glass ceiling, she apparently has reached the ceiling of her potential all in one movie. I felt that the weight of expectations was too great, the pillars all broke and the movie crashed in under the gravity of its own promise. But maybe I'll like it more on Blue Ray. As far as shoehorning her into End Game, I GENUINELY HOPE THEY DON"T EVEN THINK ABOUT LETTING HER SAVE THE DAY. The only ones who should avenge Thanos are the AVENGERS, AND NO ONE ELSE.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just boring. Don't really feel like explaining all of it so I'll just post a few criticisms I put from facebook. The amnesia just comes off as a way to expand the runtime. The second she remembers everything she just one shots all the villains, their missiles, their ships, makes me feel like I had spent 2 hours for nothing. During so many moments it felt like they were trying for hero moments but fell flat and they do this multiple times. Such as when she first gets her suit colored and she stands there awkwardly for a second or when she first flies she does a "WOHOOO" (TWICE) or even when she unlocks her powers and she stands in front of the others with effects that look like they came from the CW. During the duration of the movie there are so many "jokes" that just made me sigh. Like the "cockpit" comment or the "smile" scene with the biker it's just little **** that isn't necessary and were put there for the sole purpose of her being validated as a woman. None of that is necessary, her being a powerful heroine speaks for itself they don't need this constant vindication where she upstages everybody to make her look badass. Also Brie did NOT do a good job acting, I maybe could see if somebody was zoned out they might not notice but so many lines felt unnatural, especially the one liners and most of the jokes. There was one scene with Fury where Carol was laughing then the camera cuts to a new angle and she has a blank expression it's really distracting. That's just a couple criticisms there are a lot more but you get the idea, I didn't like it. Expand

The movie spreads boredom, and we ask ourselves if the main lead really won an Oscar award. I do not think it is Brie Larson’s fault, but it is a mix of all the elements that converted a dazzling character into a floundering project. Did the script fail? Did the acting fail? All failed in this film. However, we can salvage the cat from this lame movie.

The film is boring and confusing. At the beginning, we watch Vers training and for almost 10 – 15 minutes they talk about “emotions.” As a personal comment, invoking the word does not mean that the actress expressed emotions; she couldn’t do it. Carol Danvers is a complex character, with several emotional problems, she is loved by men and WOMEN, and Brie failed in personification (script issue?). You cannot ask pears to the elm, and we cannot ask Brie Larson to be Carol Danvers. As the movie continues, you can be touched by the 90’s nostalgia, but that is not enough because we have an unbalanced character with amnesia (and amnesia in the acting too) but she is vastly overpowered, and that does not make sense. The introduction of other characters as a young Nick Fury and Goose, the cat refreshed the movie and saved it from the collapse. Captain Marvel failed, this is not about gender issues; it is about story, Captain Marvel does not have the latter. I wanted to see a strong female lead, and I ended praising a cat and not the heroine. On the other hand, Carol Danvers' perseverance and will to fight comes from her emotions and human side. Furthermore, she fights because it is needed no matter if there is a probability of losing, she struggles because inside in her heart something pushes her to fight, but in this movie, we only observe an overpower female lead, expressionless, who does not transmit charisma to the audience. As a female, I am disappointed, and this movie is an egregious torment. Please, do not confuse feminism with an overpowered female because that message will only lead to disapproval.

Carol is mean, not very interesting herself and seems to sport the same face thought out the whole movie with a few bright moments when she is talking with nick fury. most of the humor of the movie comes from fury and he aliens involved, but carol danvers just doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of them. she doesn't particularly human at any one point in the movie and never seems to have any issues with anything. as a whole i would say wait till disney plus to see this movie if you want to see it at all. If they were trying to blaze a trail for justice, I’m not sure they succeeded. It takes more than CGI and some predictably sexist lines directed at a female lead character to do that. Perhaps, however, the goal was simply to sell tickets. Marvel may very well succeed at that. For every person who is tired of the same old preachy agenda, there appear to be lots of people who are easily parted from their money at the slightest suggestion that a film or product carries the right message. Due to other Marvel movies coming out before Captain Marvel nothing really seems fun or original, like Guardians of the Galaxy made space battles and humor good, and Thor showed the potential power of an ultimate being, while Captain Marvel kinda seemed a bit dulled down compared to them. Also the movie was kinda riddled with plot holes and unsatisfying answers, and if you know how the MCU works, you already can piece together how the movie is gonna end. Captain Marvel isn't a terrible movie, but it just doesn't quite do a good job at portraying the true potential power of Captain Marvel, but instead is kinda pretty cheesy and dumb at times. But I guess the cat was a somewhat fun surprise! Expand

The film struggles to stand on its own, often reminding us as to why'Captain Marvel' pretty much is what you expect it to be. A puzzle piece made specifically for 'Avengers: Infinity War' (2018) and the upcoming 'Avengers: Endgame' (2019). The film struggles to stand on its own, often reminding us as to why it's made, but forgetting about the title character herself. The film focuses on our title character, played by Oscar winner Brie Larson, and her being among the Kree forces. They are noble warriors, and she receives some extensive training with Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), as well as their main mission, which is to hunt down Skrulls, an evil alien-like race who can shape-shift into anyone, so you don't know who to trust. Carol (Larson) seems to be struggling to remember her past, we see her origins fragmented and get glimpses of who she was. There seems to be a trend of a strong and powerful, young female character who doesn't know where she came from, and gets glimpses of her past from time to time. If you remember Rey from 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (2015), or Alita from the recent 'Alita: Battle Angel' (2019), then you've seen this kind of origin story before. An incident occurs which leaves her stranded on Earth, she tries to find out what happened with the Skrulls, and runs into Nick Fury (a de-aged Samuel L. Jackson), and he thinks the idea of shape-shifting aliens walking among the Earth as well as a group of noble warriors from other planets is insane, but he slowly warms up to the idea after having seen most of it for himself. The main villain here is Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), the leader of the Skrulls, and his journey to find Danvers and take her down. The film, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (who also directed 'Mississippi Grind' also starring Mendelsohn), tries to be a mix of an intergalactic space adventure like 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (2014), while trying to be as grounded as 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' (2014), but for some reason, neither of these aspects feel as if they contain any emotional weight to it. It feels very paint-by-numbers as if characters need to get to certain places so the movie can try to elevate. Larson, who is a talented actress, tries to show some quirks at times, but doesn't carry the same amount of charm or playful charisma. She does share some terrific chemistry with Jackson, and their playful banter helps lift the spirits of the film's tone. Not to mention that the pace falls apart once we get to the second act, and Danvers is reunited with a friend. The scene would have more impact if we saw her actually do these things as opposed to just flashing those little memories earlier on. It's a similar problem I had with 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (2014) where, one minute, Peter Quill is a young boy, then the next minute, he's a fully grown man... there was no development to him growing up, it's just here's your character then, here they are now. Except we don't see Danvers mostly in her early life, just told through very quick flashbacks. I applaud Marvel for trying to take a different spin on origin stories, but maybe this is something to require some improvement. Also, as I said above, this film's sole purpose is to be the filler in the "Avengers" sandwich, with "Infinity War" and "Endgame" (which will be released on April 26th) being the two buns on either side. The film lacks a sense of excitement, and Larson never gets a chance to shine as her character, it all just feels lifeless with a sense of thrills here and there. Expand

Nothing groundbreaking regarding feminism in this movie that we didn't see in other movies with female lead cast. There were so many little things that were misplaced. The way fury lost his eye? Really? Did the writers watched Winter Soldier? Ronan was a coward in this movie? etc. Action scenes were so-so, most of them without any tension. Overall just an average movie which does not live up to the hype. Not the worst MCU movie, but would place it among the lower half of the 21 we had so far. Expand

I don't mind a female hero , I loved Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max and the whole bad ass female tribe , but in this mess they just push the whole female hero thing so hard it's as if your not allowed to decide for yourself if she's a hero. in the end she's not really much of a hero and doesn't have any loyalty or convection's to anyone.she'll turn on anyone at the drop of a hat , and can't be trusted , she doesn't hold any weight in the leader department , nobody would listen to or follow a character like that , man or woman . so I wanted to follow the story and like the character as I hear she's going to be major part of the end game movie but from what I see there's nothing to her except a giant push from Disney to have an SJW female hero. which is as annoying as real SJW's , very little substance no conviction and no forethought or plan, , overall it doesn't look good for the last Avengers movie if they're being forced to add this to the story .c Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It isn't "Thor 2 BAD" and Brie Larson acting isn't emotionless as lot of people think but there is some bad takes and a lot of times the emotion delivered is the opposite of what is expected. - For an origin story the evolution of the main character between the start and the end of the movie is too weak. - The direction isn't really mind blowing and while you understand that the movie wants Captain Marvel overpowered the final action scene is somewhat flat and uninspired. - The OST is forgettable.

fortunately Samuel L Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn steal the show. The Plot twist is good for a standalone movie but ruins a lot of potential stories for the next phase.

Other than that, the movie sucks. It has no intensity, no important moments, not growth, it's slow, and it's really generic altogether. There's no feeling of urgency or something human in the story (like, where's Captain Marvel's Family?).
I give it a 4 for the acting of Jackson, the cat, and the chemistry between Jackson and Larson.
Oh, and the humor... it's TERRIBLE. It's just not funny.
Remember the humor in all of the other MCU movies? Well, it's not there anymore except for one... yes ONE joke. It's not even an entertaining movie.

Wow. What an amazingly bland movie.

Coming into this film with the notion that it's being heavily boycotted really made me more interested in seeing it. I understand that there are a lot of people complaining about the main actress - mostly because of her "man-hating" remarks. However, if someone dislikes a movie so much purely because the actress couldn't help herself but to say stupid sh*t, why even see it in the first place? This movie is getting so many underwhelming reviews from the audience that it just screams desperate to me. That being said, it's not big of a deal, because if this were a better movie, the boycott would seem seriously unnecessary. As a matter of fact, "Captain Marvel" is kind of bad. "Captain Marvel" suffers the most when it's trying to present a strong female super-hero. She starts the movie with no memory of her past and is through a serious of cheesy flashes that she becomes determined to discover her roots. But throughout the movie, it's so difficult to be invested in her character because she possesses absolutely no personality, no charm and no development. She is less of a character and more of a prop for the next MCU movie that's coming out.

What can you learn about Captain Marvel so you can prepare yourself for "Avengers: Endgame"? She blasts people with her fists and she occasionally smirks? Yep, that's it. It's impossible to find her compelling when she's essentially a Mary Sue. And that brings me to my next point.

The action. I really don't think the action sequences are bad. They are shot and edited just solidly. Nothing special. However, the stakes are non-existent. I think what stands out in an action movie is that you can feel the suspense and the unpredictability of the situation. If you remove that and add a bunch of alien bad guys who clearly look like they are wearing masks, you'll get "Captain Marvel" in terms of action.

The comedy is another aspect of this picture that completely fails. I've put up with a lot of these blockbuster movies everytime they force in some "humorous" scene and I say "put up" because I can't stand them. They are uncreative and painfully unfunny. "Captain Marvel" isn't the worst in that department, but it's close.

Now, although I have issues with the film, it isn't a total misstep. I really enjoyed the production design and the special effects, to a certain degree. The movie succeeds in taking us to a place that truly feels like the 90's. The atmosphere is pleasant and I appreciate the inclusion of certain characters. Nick Fury, for instance. The de-aging technology really worked on him. The CGI in the movie is good, except for the cat, which sometimes looked computer-animated. It took me out of the movie, actually.

Talking about everything else feels pointless, as this film just seems super generic and cookie-cutter. The characters are badly written. The acting is quite awful from certain actors. So is the dialogue. Brie Larson didn't do a terrible job, but she didn't bring anything new to the table either. In short, I'm not particularly excited for her involvement in "Endgame".

The movie lacks style and substance. It's tonally off and it doesn't boast any sort of emotion. "Captain Marvel"'s hate from the audience may not be completely justified, but they are not wrong when they say this movie is very "meh".

This is not worth the money and experience, but if you like the character, then more power to you. I seriously hope this is the last bland Marvel movie we get. Wishful thinking, I know.

4/10.
