An entertaining movie that does achieve lift-off, too bad its as aerodynamic as a plank of wood. Also raises continuity issues for the MCU. 4/10 for the adequate, but underwhelming Captain Marvel.

Great performances by Ben Mendelsohn and Samuel L Jackson carried this movie. Brie Larson's Carol Danvers has some compelling and likable moments in the first act, but her performance takes a nosedive in acts 2 & 3. To be fair, I think having amnesia hamstrung what she could do. Great makeup for the skrulls (Talos in particular); it's all practical, lifellike, and akin to the comics. However, they use them to make a political statement that takes me out of the movie when there were very touching moments to it. On top of all of that, we have an invincible bore in the form of Captain Marvel when the third act comes around.

To be fair, I feel there were too many cooks in the kitchen behind the scenes in terms of directors and screenwriters taking this movie in different directions, and it did no service to Brie Larson. This does give me hope for her performance in Endgame, as the Russo Brothers have proven themselves time and time again.

The one huge complaint I have is the very awkward pacing of the entire movie. Before you know it the first hour (of a two hour movie) is over and nearly nothing of great substance has occurred. The last 40 minutes of the movie is where all the story is contained. The story itself is moderately interesting, with an unexpected twist throw-in (especially if you have read the comics). However, for the most part, the story is uninspired and leaves much to be desired. For a story that was supposed to expose mass audiences to Captain Marvel for the first time, the movie spent a surprisingly little amount of time on developing Brie Larson's titular character. Moments that I felt should have held more weight felt light and delivered very little.

For the positives, some of the action scenes were very entertaining (however, the finale was plagued with a very off and unneeded song choice). Captain Marvel's powers are interesting and I can not wait for them to be further developed in future installments to see her full extent. Overall the movie suffered from poor direction and writing, but was saved in some parts through the expert talents of Samuel Jackson and some of Brie Larson's scenes really showed the potential of a really great character. However, the writing for her character was so bland and boring that Brie could only do so much with the material. A decent contribution to the MCU but not a memorable one.

It's more-or-less her origin story, but takes too long to develop what is essentially a set-up for the next one. Some of the visual efx are cool, but many of the action sequences are plagued by that modern preference for blurry shooting and chaotic editing. On the other hand, there are entirely too many slow, dramatic scenes, which really drag things down. Also in the story is the look at the early career of Nick Fury (Samuel L. The most generic and poorest Marvel movie so far, not even the special fx can save this badly scripted incoherant jumbled mess, with it's stonefaced lead that can't act or portray the male super-hero that has been gender swapped for the SJW audience.

Captain Marvel isn't that good in this movie because it was a RUSHED character in order to have a way to beat Thanos down with the six jewels. Also her powers is completely asspulled. Legit that one gem will give her more power than Thanos that wields all 6 gems? **** that. Absurd and dishonest. The plot in the start wasn't that great either. They tried to compress a gigantic universe of two other races into a 2-hour long movie while also developing Captain Marvel as a character and Nick Fury's eye loss, not to forget that we also have random flashbacks in order to explain Carol Danvers' past.

In the middle of the movie the plot gets absurdly shifted with the sudden appearance of Ronan in the movie that reminds us that the Kree is the evil race from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (Who the **** didn't remember that? I did. I thought Captain Marvel would be an Anti-Hero type of character. Guess I was wrong.).

It had a lot to offer, but was poorly offered. This was a script long enough for two or three movies but they insisted in making it into only one.

TL;DR: Captain Marvel sucked because it was a rushed movie.

It picks up slightly at the end but not worth the uncomfortable shifting in your chair, waiting for this average film to end. We've been spoilt with so many excellent superhero films over the last few years. This just doesn't compare. I will say however that the de-aging of Samuel Jackson is very impressive and I predict that the next thing we'll see is classic film characters such as Travis Bickle, Darth Vadar or even Marilyn Monroes appearing in new films. Will we see an end to real humans actors eventually? I hope not. Expand

While Larson's character can be bland at times, not to mention the sometimes rushed pacing and shoehorned social commentary, the stellar visual effects and Jackson's charisma make "Captain Marvel" a decent, albeit somewhat disjointed origin story.

There are some legitimately good scenes, a few performances were pretty good (Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, and that’s it), and some of the action was good. The character of Captain Marvel is bad, she changes in no way. Brie Larson did a bad job, which is unexpected. She’s a great actress (see 2015’s ‘Room’), but it seemed like she didn’t care about this movie. Every one of her lines made me cringe between the mediocre writing and the terrible delivery. The plot is predictable, and music choices are really on-the-nose, most of the CGI is meh. The face work on Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg is amazing mostly. This movie is a tonal mess. The comedy is mostly hit or miss, and mostly misses for me, but I did get a few smiles out of it. It’s not a great solo movie, and it’s not a great way to introduce the character of Captain Marvel. There’s nothing that see does that shows me she can kill Thanos. It didn’t convince me that she’s any stronger any other Marvel character. In my opinion, this movie did not succeed in what it wanted to achieve, but it’s watchable, and enjoyable, and it wasn’t a negative experience, but I wasn’t blown away or anything. Expand

And at this point in the MCU, we expect Marvel to know what its doing, especially with such an important origin story. Expand

It fails to add anything to the MCU and given the massive amount of hype leading up to this film, the word that best describes it is disappointing. Brie Larson fails to give an enticing performance (albeit the writing does her few favors) and the character of Carol Danvers is unrelatable. Danvers experiences no real conflict or challenge throughout the film. She is just as much, if not more, of a "Mary Sue" as Rey is in the Star Wars Sequel trilogy. Furthermore this film feels like it should have been the second or third film in the Captain Marvel storyline, yet Marvel chooses to rush it out in time for Infinity War. Not to mention that Marvel completely wastes the Secret Invasion storyline.

The movie is not without some good points (however sparse). Jackson and Mendelsohn's performances are noteworthy, though not revolutionary. The buddy cop dynamic is somewhat satisfying, yet still disappointing.

In addition, this movie has no subtlety. Guardians of the Galaxy's 70s soundtrack was explained and made sense in the storyline. This film just throws in 90s songs to remind you that the film takes place in 1995. Furthermore, while this film should not be directly compared to Wonder Woman, comparisons will obviously be drawn since they are the first films in their respective franchises to star women. While Patty Jenkins had Wonder Woman tackle gender stereotypes and injustices in subtle, clever ways, Captain Marvel does it too loudly in ways that feel shoehorned in.

Overall, Captain Marvel has some exciting plot pieces, but its protagonist lacks any form of emotion or relatability. Overall, for the first time, I have my doubts about the future of the MCU after endgame if Captain Marvel is still to become a leader in the franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This being the next instalment of the MCU juggernaut and nestling between the cheeks of probably my most anticipated movies of the last 5 years infinity war and endgame and considering the post credit scene from infinity war, there was absolutely no way I would miss out on this movie, bad marketing or no bad marketing.

Having said that, this was another franchise like guardians and black panther that I had absolutely no familiarity with. So guardians I openly derided the concept of a talking racoon and tree bloke. Guardians ended up winning me over with one trailer and becoming my top 3 MCU films after seeing it. Black panther turned out to be a solid, almost sci fi concept with one of the best villains from the franchise just because killmonger’s motivations were so woven into the premise and made sense in todays society. In other words guardians propped up by some top character interactions, settings, dialogue and character arcs and BP propped up with one of the MCU’s best villains tied to a solid concept. In both of those cases I ended up being turned around from either a position of not caring or a position of being biast toward hating to loving those films. Therefore over the past few months I was looking at captain marvel with the same eye, would this be the next marvel franchise to win me over? Not really. There were a few bits including the buzzword "be the best 'you' you can be" right at the start and some silliness throughout. it was saved in places by sam jackson and some connective tissue to the rest of the mcu. it had a post credit scene that made me slightly less excited if that is possible for endgame. This film mostly ambles along for most of it. Danvers life is presented in some disconnected flashbacks of photos and stuff. The main thing though is Brie Larson is just not one of those inspired pieces of casting like RDJ as iron man or Ryan Reynolds as deadpool. Its because Captain marvel doesn’t have quantifiable character traits to say Brie acted said traits well enough or memorably enough to point to a good performance. Captain marvel is basically on screen for some time and that is about it. Its not a memorable character its not a particularly memorable movie. The story overall is ok. I was interested to see Nick fury’s kind of origin movie and to be fair I got that which is where my positive points come from. Cat was good. Nirvana in the soundtrack was good. Like 2 jokes in it.

The parts I liked were that this set up the kree special forces with one familiar face Djimon Hounsou and ronan the accuser. So the skrull were set up to be the antagonists for this film yet we recognise the accusers and the motley character as an antagonist from guardians which leaves us wondering how they’re the good guys in CM. The trailers presented an actually quite boring premise of the skrulls being injected into society. CM actually flips this on its head halfway through where the kree are setting CM up. The Skrull are in fact the good guys. Which again I rate as some of the positive points. All this to say though we end up with ronan the accuser and jude law as bad guys.

So here we are at the end of the whole set up. Brie gets the ultimate powers of CM and starts to kick ass. Captain marvel shows that she can basically do anything takes out all sorts of nukes from the dark aster looking ships etc etc. but wait what is this CM suddenly stops. Why is this? Kryptonite? Conciensce? Any of the morality touted by the characters? No she stops because in their infinite wisdom, they CAN’T kill ronan, we know he dies in guardians, we know he survives over a kree empire that is down on its luck not in a prequel 90’s movie so CM just has to stop and throw out a BS line and let him go. Whats more any sequel is very likely to be set where CM liberates the Kree homeworld from the AI and Ronan (plus plot armour) must survive. In other words the much touted most powerful character in the MCU is defeated by shonky prequel plotting and basically robbing any sense of urgency or stakes from the story. Any sort of significance or coolness from her powers. Why does she not kill Jude law ‘I don’t have anything to prove to you’. I suppose those 5 minutes that would have been a fight scene are rewarded back to us for sitting through the film. yeah when all’s said and done cpt marvel was like at best a 6/10 film. The critics have said their piece and agreed with that, the audience seems to be saying their piece and agreeing with that. I honestly can’t believe people are dying on the hill for this movie based on hype marketing, ripping down review sites defending it. At the end of the day we’re not talking about like 12 years a slave or even another black panther.

I was not emotionally invested in any of the characters except for two of them and none of them were marvel. The best part of the movie is without any doubt the Marvel studios intro logo sequence. RIP STAN LEE. Wonder Woman was by far a wayyyyyyyyyy superior film and it definitely shows. Really disappointed in Captain Marvel. I had high hopes for this movie. Now before people jump on me and say im a sexist or I don't know what I am talking about just be aware that I am an owner of a comic book store and I live and breathe comics, my expectations on how a superhero film is supposed to be is set rather high. For those who don't know who Captain Marvel is or how she's supposed to be the closest thing to describe her is she is more or less Superman with Green Lanterns personality or Shazam (for obvious reasons). What I saw was a robot for most of the film. Sad to say it was just as most 90's super hero movies were...flat, bland, and bad. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t really hate this movie, I only hate films that completely bore me, this one doesn’t, and it just makes me mad. First off I have to preface by saying I’m not a marvel fan. I’ve seen a few Marvel films and I generally find them to be okay. I mean after all they are made to be as accessible as possible; they are films for everyone, meaning there are no specific elements that really stand out or shine in any way. Marvel movies are very much streamlined.
Now that that’s outta the way, let me get to the actual film. First of all this film is too action-heavy, it’s too much of a cg show; I would argue most of it could’ve been cut. In fact I think the first act should’ve been the big reveal that the Skrulls are allegedly not terrorists but are simply searching for a home from the presumably imperialist Kree. You might ask why the reveal? Well because this film is under developed and it could use a better structure. The moral quandary this film represents is very interesting, Carol (Captain Marvel) realizes that she was lied to by the Star Force and by extension Kree society, since the Kree hid her past from her and accuse the Skrulls of being galactic terrorists. she now is faced with a serious dilemma, she has been a member of the star force for half a decade, her initial loyalty lies with the Kree, she has been socialized and integrated into Kree Society to the point that she joined the military force of said society, but now she also knows that she was essentially kidnapped from her actual home and that the Kree are fighting for an unjust cause against the Skrulls. What does she do? Well it takes one cliché motivational speech from a friend, and 30 seconds of thought for her to completely flip sides. She then proceeds to fight her friends aggressively and without remorse, she destroys an entire Star Force fleet and probably kills hundreds of soldiers. Moreover hilariously unfitting 80s-90s pop is playing in the background. So I guess we are just to assume that the Skrulls are just considered terrorists for no reason, That the entire Star Force militia is bad and worthy of genocide? Well I don’t know if this movie understands this very well, there is no real world building or examination of propaganda that pushes anti-skrull sentiment; we just know that they’ve been “fighting a war for centuries”. This is a confused film, it fails to understand and explore its own themes, it claims to be a feminist film but it also says that a woman needs to gain un-fathomable super powers to overcome struggles, it’s a film with a political message about tolerance and anti-violence, and yet it basks in its expensive, ridiculous, and at times incompressible action and destruction. So what does this film offer to anyone who isn’t a marvel fan and has no deep interest in the over-arching lore of the MCU, probably just a headache and a lazy answer to an interesting question, note that I’m not saying these films need to appeal to non marvel fans, I’m saying that our Main character has flimsy principles at best, and at worst is a thoughtless murderer.

The first two have to do with the effect this movie will have on the MCU. First, It really appears that Captain Marvel is being set up to be the last minute hero who saves the day in Endgame. This would be a great disservice to the existing characters who have so much already invested in the fight against Thanos and deserve to have their own victory without a brand new character stealing all the thunder. Second, I think Marvel has created their own "Superman" problem. Captain Marvel is a ridiculously overpowered character, who will make any other characters insignificant, much like Superman did in Justice League. Those are the two biggest problems I have with the movie. The third issue I have is with the acting of Brie Larson. Some of the most important scenes in the film saw her delivering her lines like she was in a school play, or reading from a teleprompter. Her character was not compelling at all. I think with the right actress in that role, the movie could have been much more powerful. Brie Larson was not the right actress. The fourth problem I had was with the underlying social theme of the film, which is Captain Marvel raising herself up and freeing herself from the "patriarchy". To establish this, she is given a backstory where she is surrounded by men who are all displaying over the top sexist behavior towards her, acting in ways that I have never seen men act in real life. The film also seems to take a lot of pleasure in having her boss Nick Fury around. This seems to be a common trait among "feminist" heroines... they can't simply create a good, strong heroine. Instead they have to portray all the men around her as weak or scumbags because the goal is to make the heroine appear particularly superior to men. Therefore, the world is warped to serve this narrative, and we get a very unrealistic characterization of what most men are like.
The movie had some funny moments, but much of the intended humor didn't really work. About halfway through I caught myself dozing off, which is not a good sign. The reactions of the others in the theater pretty much mirrored my own. Overall, I wouldn't call it a terrible movie, but it was disappointing and certainly didn't match up to what I would expect from Marvel.

With all controversy aside, the movie is mainly just bland with a few heartwarming and cringey moments thrown in there. The marketing is the true reason why I was turned off of this film. The film alone wasn't really pushing an agenda as much as the marketing made it seem to be. Those elements are what really damages this movie which is a shame. Soundtrack was the strongest in my opinion, but they miss-placed one of their songs which really took me out of the film. It's not terrible and not good. It's a mediocre popcorn flick. It's just a shame that people will call those critical of this movie sexist trolls. People don't realize that addressing a group of people with insults pushes them further away from the ideology being pushed. Don't insult people that you want swayed to your side. This just creates more polarization. The movie had potential, but didn't really utilize it (the cinematography was pretty good, but still looked bland even in action sequences). It's no wonder people are calling this film "Captain Meh-vel" 5.5/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a non-political review. The movie has its pros and cons. Pros: Nick Fury, the cat, the jokes, the CGI, the support characters are all amazing and I enjoy it a lot. Cons: the problem of the movie is the main character, aka Captain Marvel. The lack of emotions of a flawless character makes it so hard to feel in love with her. The plot is predictable. And it takes like nearly an hour to get to the fun. One of the marvel worst films Expand

CGI and visuals: great! I watched Nick Fury closely and the de-aging worked great. The rest oft he CGI was great too, much better than in Black Panther.
All in all had the movie (with few exceptions) two color ranges: „to dark“ and „bubblegum“. Although I did like the 90ies look.
The Music. Mostly the music was good. But there were some scenes wich seemingly wanted to copy the contrasting musical effect of Guardians of the Galaxy, but it didn’t work. Characters
It was awesome to see Nick Fury and Coulson again but it was a little sad that they tried to use Fury as a kind of comic relief. He had some awesome scenes and yes, he is not the hard-ass Director of Shield we all love, but the funny sidekick? He was still one of the best thing in the movie! Losing his eye that way? How stupid ist hat?
Talos: maybe the most interesting and rounded Character in the movie. Korath and Ronan: Yeah, they were in Guardians 1, could have been any Kree, but the connection was not nessecary.
Maria Rambeau: Came to me as the stronger woman oft he two pilots. I don’t know if it ist he playing or the writing, but as a Character musch more interesting than Carol Danvers.
Minn-Erva, Att-Lass, Bron-Char: Completely colorless, despite ther blue skin. Could have been anyone and are completely interchangeable.
Monica Rambeau: Nice little Kid, but a little Anoyying at times. Espacially when the 12 Year old ist he one that tells her mom to be a great role model. Please don’t put feminist propaganda into the mouth of Kids, don’t put any propaganda in their mouths. Movies are made to entertain, not to pursue a political agenda.
Yon-Rogg: Of the Kree, the only one with real Characteristics. Well played.
Goose: No, no, no, no. Most reviews I seen name the cat the best thing in the movie, I don’t.
And the most important at the end: Carol Danvers aka Vers. First of: she is never called Captain Marvel and I think it is a good thing, because I think the Name is a Punchline in it self. Alltogether I have to say, that Carol Danvers isn’t a very likeable Character. I didn’t had the feeling of: „I want to see that character again in another movie“ like I had with Tony Stark, Natasha Romanov, Peter Parker and Steven Strange. It was more like Steve Rogers or Thor: „Well, when she comes back, okay, when not, no big loss.“. Why is that? It’s beause in my opinion she HAS no character. She is defined by having superpowers and puzzeling together her backgroud isn’t done for the sake oft he character development but for the plot oft he movie. Yes we know now about her history, but it still feels flat.
I know that Brie Larson has done movies, I don’t remember seeing her in one although I may have seen movies with her. I’ve been told, that she is a great actress, but I didn’t seen it here. It felt like she went in here with a „just another job“ attitude. If you see the other MCU-actors, you see the characters on sceen. Not the alter Egos. You see Tony Stark, not RDJ playing Iron Man, you see Steve Rogers, not Chris Evans playing Captain America. Here you see Brie Larson playing just another Superhero. If she really should be the new face oft he MCU, she hast o stop playing Vers (or Captain Marvel) and become Carol Danvers on Screen. If she doesn’t, I see the End of the MCU coming.
Story: It was an okay story if you look around and compare to other superhero movies. As an origin Story it stands out. It shares it’s place with Captain America. Humor: In german there is a line in a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe „Himmelhoch jauchzend, Zum Tode betrübt“, roughly translated „sky-high cheering, saddened to death“. There were great punchlines. Mostly by Fury and Coulson. There were much more silly or just not funny. That‘s very sad, because the MCU was mostly full of good placed and well developed humor.
Coming to the end:
- mid credits scene, yeah, why not
- after credits scene, lets say that I think the one of Spider-Man was better

It is by far not the worse movie I’ve ever seen, but it is by far not good, just little above average.
For the future: don’t tell the viewers forehands what they have to feel about the movie and how important the gender of the main character is. I would suggest that the complete Disney Company (including all subsidiaries) take movies and TV-shows like Wonder Woman, Alien, Buffy, Divergent or Mara und der Feuerbringer (germany, 2015) or ever their own Rogue One and Clone Wars or Rebels (Asoka Tano & Co) to heart. In contrast to what most feminists tell you all the time, a strong female has still to be a character first and a woman second, not a woman without any character but overwhelming powes. Carol Danvers dodged the bullet by a hair's breadth, but I still think she ist o powerfull fort he MCU, I don’t think, that superman powerlevel Characters will be a positive addition tot he MCU.

There's no real villain to speak of. This movie is poorly written and doesn't provide anything that would boost it's characters stories or appeal. At one point I gave an audible groan in the theater because I couldn't take anymore. It's unfortunate because the character has potential, although they were a bit heavy-handed in writing her as a "strong female character despite the male establishment." I enjoyed Captain Marvel's relationship with her "mentor" played by Jude Law. Jude Law did as good a job as he could have with what they edited into the movie; sadly I still don't remember what his character's completely forgettable name is. Ben Mendelsohn played a great likable character. Samuel L. Jackson pretty much saved the movie, and it would have been nice if they did more with Lashana Lynch's character Maria Rambaeu. This movie creates many plot holes on how it fits into the MCU, and additionally, it retcons details to shoe-horn Capt. Marvel as a more meaningful character into the MCU. All of the blame for this movie's failings aren't on Brie Larson alone, as the director's and Kevin Feige are also why this movie feels so forced. It's sad because I know this movie was made after Endgame and now I'm wary about Captain Marvel's heavy-handed blandness in Endgame. Expand

Putting up a charisma vacuum against Samuel L Jackson (even a if it's only a virtual SLJ) isn't a smart move.

Really just a typical Marvel movie, just with pandering 90s nostalgia and adding a big dollop of Guardians of the Galaxy, although with no credit to James Gunn who's been dumped without thanks.

Whilst trying to milk a fresh demographic as they did so successfully last year with Black Panther they just make stupid decisions which hamper the sentiment of the audience they are trying their best to please. Exposition at the beginning whilst leaving the main character in amnesiac confusion just makes her look clueless whilst at the same time boring everyone who's seen it all before. The plot twist (it's not a spoiler as they state the race of the 'heros' at the start of the film spoiling the already obvious twist for anyone who's paid attention for the preceding films) has been done to death. The music makes no sense half the time, did the directors even see the start of of GOTG2 where it shows that the sound track has to be coming from somewhere not just blaring No Doubt for reasons.

As for the blue blood coming out of Captain Marvel's nose, that was just a deceit to make you think there's more depth than there really is. Good job that blue blood was AB negative or she'd be in trouble!

My rating would be a 1 or 2 if I were to consider the PR and the trailers. Deciding to dwell in the culture wars at this time is just insane. Doing it on the wrong side, both morally and considering the fandom is even worst. That SHOULD NOT be relevant to the movie score itself.
Now the movie> Brie Larson was misscast. She is a good actress but she was not good here. I kind of understand what they tried to do with the tone of the movie, but DC proved it doesn't work for comic book fans. The trope is hilarious, but the movie would be better if Vers did smile more. Her acting at the first hour of the movie would be justifiable considering her backgrond, if they didn't signal the idea that she was "emotional" multiple times. Didn't see much emotion there. It would be a great twist to have her robotic self get more emotional while she discovers more about her past. That would be some GREAT writing and would allow her to show her acting range. Fury saved the movie. And so did Coulson. not much love for him, but if we had double his screen time it would be amazing. A trio instead of a duo adventuring around. Who knows, if they didn't want to push a narrative we could have had that. The villain... Well... The real villain was just abismal. Jude law deserved better. But the Kree "villain" was just great. From a war monger motivation to a desperate man trying to save his family and deciding to risk everything on the humanity of the person who was also a victim of the real villain.
In the Captain marvel movie, every plot point not 100% directed at her is decent or even great. Everything regarding her feels forced and rushed. Funny thing, isn't it?
I have mixed feeling about the ending. My inner child just loves the Dragon ball ending, with Goku (Cap Marvel) flying around, like a SS(Super Saiyan), destroying everything. if we had more SS and less SJW, the movie could be an 8/10
She looked too op, but it was great fun. I almost did 5/6, but the cat pushed it a point further.

I feel like the story has a lot of unrealized potential. This is a little disappointing, since Marvel has been working on this story for YEARS!

I feel like I should write a little more.

The end credit scenes are worthless. Who would ever see that coming. Thanks for keeping us in the dark on why we should care about the MCU after Avengers Endgame.

Hmmmm... a little more.

See it if you must. Keep your expectations in check. Don't feel like you are missing out if you don't see it before the next Avenger's movie.

The ranting begins here. Pay no attention. You've been warned. Still no giant spoiler type stuff.

There's no hook, no lure, no "did you catch that?" hint of what's to come. If there was, I completely missed it. Don't worry Captain Marvel is on it! Wait, no she isn't... If she wasn't sleep walking for decades, she would have noticed some giant, long lived purple dude wants to gather mighty stones, and eliminate half of the lives in the universe. How come everyone knows about Thanos except Captain Marvel? She even stared down Ronan "the Accuser" who happens to also be chasing down stones. Explain that one Kevin.

Wow, 5000 characters allows me to go on, and on, and on some more.

I want more Goose. Let's start a petition. Let's digitally add Goose to more movies. More Goose! More Goose! More Goose! More Goose! More Goose! More Goose! More Goose!

It also didn't really help that Brie Larson's acting was hit and miss here. It is a shame because I can see she is trying super hard being excellent but the script isn't sharp or interesting enough. It was entertaining though and it got better as it went on. But it says a lot when my fave character was the cat and not Carol Danvers...

This is theThere have been three movies in the MCU, at least to me, that are lackluster at best and disappointingly bad at worst: “The Incredible Hulk”, “Iron Man 2” and “Thor: The Dark World”. Now you can add "Captain Marvel” to that list. This is the first MCU movie that I’ve seen that failed to deliver critically, in quite a while. However, there’s some good in this MCU film, as there is in the others. The supporting cast is downright phenomenal; the standouts being Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn and Goose the Cat. Jackson’s chemistry with Larson was surprising at times, there are a few chuckles and laughs here and there, the presentation set on Carol’s backstory was intriguing albeit for a short while, a few genuine surprises caught my eye and Stan Lee. Stan Lee’s always a win, god bless you for that beautiful tribute to him. But every other factor that made the later MCU films feel special is mind-numbingly absent here: the story knows what it wants to be but doesn’t set up a core plotline to follow, there’s no visual style to set it apart from other installments and no cohesive or hybrid tone set within the second and third act, the action sequences are entertaining but downright forgettable, there are some blatantly stupid retcons along the way and no matter how hard she tries, Brie Larson was mis-cast in this role in every possible way. Whether it was the direction, the script or by her choices, her acting could not get me 100% sold on her character and maybe the fact that she had to spew political garbage prior to the film’s release just made her performance all that more sour in my opinion. Your job is supposed to inspire people to put their butts in those seats to see your movie and instead you end up turning away literally half of the target audience. Now people don’t see you as a hero, Brie. You heart might’ve been in the right place but you shoved your head too far up your ass. Maybe if they casted Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron or even Jessica Rothe for that instance, I’d relate to Captain Marvel more.

I really don’t understand the mentality of these executives behind these film companies nowadays to push female empowerment down our throats. I get it, March is technically Woman’s History month, but we’ve had badass female leads like Sarah Conner, Laurie Strode and Ripley from the 70’s and 80’s but they worked out so well cause of the stories they were involved in and the fact that their femininity didn’t over-shadow everything else.....and some of these compelling feminist films that still exist today don’t push that narrative to disrespectful levels: Wonder Woman. Thelma and Louise. Persepolis. Wendy and Lucy. Mad Max: Fury Road. Hell, even Alita: Battle Angel managed to make it work. I’m not saying you can’t add politics in your movies but the main reason why we even go is to see intriguing storylines with intriguing characters so we can turn our brains off and have fun. Screw the agendas, screw the toxicity, screw the sex-shaming: just give me intriguing characters mixed with a cohesive story and I’m all good. You can have a political message in a movie and still have work out in the favor of the story but don’t jeopardize the quality of the product you’re putting out to the public to push an agenda that’s already drove away the fanbases of some of cinemas most popular franchises.

Is this film terrible? Not entirely, but it’s nowhere near as flawless as the critics are making it out to be. Is it the equivalent of Ghostbusters (2016) or The Last Jedi? In my opinion, not yet. Those films are much more offensive considering the backlash they received and how they practically killed their respective franchises. The MCU still has time to adapt and change into something truly remarkable but what they did here was just sad and I wouldn’t be surprised if we get another situation like The Last Jedi. Take this as a lesson, Marvel: we’ve been there for you for since the beginning and we have a month left before Endgame. I implore you: PLEASE don’t turn your back on us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. robert downey jr has so much charisma that can talk to a wall and make you cry/laugh/write an your university thesis etc. Brie Larson is the wall. Really the miscast for the role was huge. I do not think that it was Brie Larson fault, actually i believe she was a victim. They really did not protect her by rewriting her scenes/lines so they will fit to her. Music was decent could been better. The way how Nick Fury lost his eye is disrespectful to the character and the story of the character. CGI's are fair but they could be better. First part was ok but then is just going down. The movie had a lot of feminist scenes but i was expecting worst. Marvel show us that they can do better. Monica Rambeau. For a comic enthusiast like me that was like a spit in the face from Marvel. Monica Rambeau a afroamerican mother/ saves the word as leader of Avengers and they make her few bad lines. There goes the "diversity" out of the window. Tesaract is not where it suppose to be according to previews movies.
The KREE-SKRULL war is just misunderstanding when it should be for years.
Ronan the Accuser goes down like a a turd.
Jude Law’s character, devoted himself to Ronan, so why wasn’t in Guardians of the Galaxy?
The origin movie doesnot tell us how she got her powers.
In general the movie does not meet the standards of the other Marvel movies. My opinion s that it makes it one 3 worst movies.
Russos brothers already missed.

I'm highly disappointed they didn't create a struggle for the character to overpower. She pretty much gets handed her power without having to earn it. In Thor his arrogance causes him to lose everything. When all is lost and his about to lose he finds the power to protect the ones he loves. This movie doesn't have that. That's really the main reason I can't give this movie a good score. You can't just make the character powerful for the sake of being powerful. It doesn't work out. Expand

I was really looking forward to this as a fan of Marvel's cosmic storylines and a low-key fan of Captain Marvel herself. But unfortunately this movie crumbles under the weight of a bad script and mediocre direction. Not to mention the pressure the filmmakers must have been under to fit a new character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering that, this movie isn't half bad. But it sinks again when you realize that the worst part is the main character and the villain.

Not to say Brie Larson is a bad actress, or miscast. It's simply that the story doesn't have anything for her to do, and as a result all her energy is spent posturing. The script is so afraid to give her any vulnerability that the film has no tension, even with the considerable amount of conflict in the story. There just isn't a moment in the movie at all where she's at a loss or faces a serious obstacle.

Which is all strange considering that the supporting cast is largely good and interesting. But since the villain is never even hinted at being a match for her in terms of power, and never offers anything emotional or intellectual to challenge Captain Marvel, it feels like a foregone conclusion that she will triumph on all accounts. It doesn't help that this is a prequel and we all know more or less where every element of the story will end up.

Not the worst movie in the world, but hardly inspiring or engaging. Rent it for cheap thrills, and look forward to the character growing under different directors.

The fight scenes were good with Brie and I thought she did a decent job in the role, to be honest. The movie just seemed like it should've been amazing but like Black Panther, it seemed to just be an explanation as to why this new character was in the next movie. And hopefully like with Black Panther, Wakanda was so much better in Avengers 3 than in Black Panther. Here's hoping her character gets a better treatment in Avengers 4. Expand

Plus, she is some kind of immortal in this movie and that means why i have to worried about her? The only one cool character is Nick Fury. Samuel Jackson is amazing there. He is funny and truly take your attention if he is in the frame. CGI is okay for hero's movie. The plot has a twist and for someone probably will be interesting. So that's not important movie for seeing. The only thing what i'm really worried is Endgame. The Captain Marvel present herself like the main character of MCU. BUT how i said it so, she is boring and uninteresting. I hope Marvel understand that! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is okay. Most of these reviews on these sites are just terrible attempts to hold this movie down. Not saying it's great, but isn't a totally unwatchable piece of s**t at all. .
.
Good : The deaging effect on Samuel L. Jackson is awesome. He resembled Zeus from Die Hard with a Vengeance, a totally uncanny resemblance. His natural charisma and charm prove to be a saving grace of the movie. Also, he was given a much more screen time, which kept me interested for a longer time. It ain't as bad as the fake reviews say it is, and is completely watchable from the beginning to the end. Apart from this, Ben Mendelsohn does a very good job as well.
.
Mixed : (Spoilers) Kree are the villains, Skrulls are the good guys and are initially shown to be the exact opposite. This has been taken by many viewers to be a positive, but I just have happened to rewatch Deadpool 2 and some other films with similar tropes quite recently. So, it didn't click with me well. Also, Ronan was a Kree in GotG 1, so I roughly predicted the twist, and I was right. On the whole, I appreciate the ideas behind the film, but I did not like the writing, directing and overall execution of those ideas. As a result, I found this movie to be very dull. .
.
Bad : I am really sad to say this but Brie Larson is probably the worst casting choice in the MCU, after Don Cheadle for War Machine. It feels like Carol was the same person before and after the crucial events shown in the movie. Her performance is completely flat. Writers and directors are to be blamed too, but it doesn't feel like she was totally into the role at the first place. Apart from this, there is a little explanation why she could absorb all the powers of the tesseract and not die, and how does all that absorption make her super invicible. It felt as if they concentrated more on her powers than story. She often feels like an exaggerated and unlikable version of Superman. We get to know what Kree is up to, but it doesn't clearly explain their motives. The writing and directing is quite poor, and it is apparent from the fact that we end up not caring much about the new characters. The action scenes are below average at best. Many of the scenes are in the dark, so I couldn't see what was going on. Other times, there were frequent cuts. There are dumb song choices for a fight scene, which make it look totally whacky. And, Fury lost his eye because a f**king alien cat scratched his eye? What the f**k is that, seriously? Also, in the first Avengers film, Natasha says that she wasn't trained for aliens and creatures like that, but Fury should've let her train for that. It means either Fury is a d**k, or the writers didn't see the first Avengers film at all. I will stick with the second one. I don't remember it clearly, but I think Fury said that "Avengers initiative" was because of Peggy Carter or so. If I am wrong, then please don't mind. But if I am not, what was the point of the final moments of this film? .
.
Conclusion : For casual fans, it's okay for a one time watch. But for MCU fans, it will be underwhelming and disappointing. It feels like a mess of a film with great potential. .

The issue that still stands is the little to none character development. I also noticed awkward screenplay and poor character relationships. It felt like the character development wasn't even touched. It seemed like everything was handed to Cap Marvel, and she never faced any struggle other than maybe dealing with Yon-Rogg. She had zero weakness and no one possed a threat to her — some of the lines that I noticed felt out of place. Apparently telling a woman a "young lady" is an insult. The relationship with Danver and Rambeau felt forced. There was zero emotional feeling even when Danvers remembers who Rambeau was. The first act was great, the second act was slow, and the third act was confusing. It's only fitting that this movie is a 5. Expand

The story of Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

A movie that serves the purpose of introducing the titular hero so you would know who she is when she shows up in Avengers: Endgame.

The story while not amazing is fun enough to deserve a watch. Great action scenes and funny moments. #GooseIsThaBomb

Soundtrack while sometimes was good in other it actually ruined the scenes I was watching. So it was a hit and miss.

But if I have to be honest Brie Larson was the wrong actress to portray Captain Marvel. She is devoid of emotion and her acting is robotic. “Take two steps, turn, look mean and heroic” like she is just acting being a super hero instead of being the hero. Sometimes it reminded me of straight to TV movies with low budget dialogue and actors. And at this time in the game Marvel should have brought big guns in acting.

But maybe they’ll introduce her to Rouge and have each other shake hands (if you know what I mean)

All in all it is entertaining but not needed to be watched to be ready for Avengers: Endgame. Maybe wait until it comes out to rent.

A good aproximation to what Phase 4 may bring although the story stops more on world building that reiterates some ideas laid in the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

Not so much for the development of the character of Carol Danvers, the protagonist that appears to be the perfect soldier even if a little bit "explosive", a character with no good antagonist to match her, a character that can overtake any foes with a power that is not that well explained.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first 'female-led' MCU movie was, more or less, by the numbers. It wasn't a terrible movie (which I thought it would be), but it wasn't exceptional either. The film from several key problems. The plot is ploddy and key issues seem to suddenly be abandoned and casually forgotten about. The pacing, though generally fine feels just a little bit off. But of course, the worst aspect of the film was it's choice of lead. Despite having the credentials of being an Academy Award winning actress, Brie Larson had literally no business being in a superhero movie, especially as it's lead heroine. For about 80% she literally has the same dull look on her face, no matter what situation she is faced with. I could count on my fingers the number of times she actually displayed emotion. The irony of this was her story, which suggested she was too emotional by Kree standards, and needed to learn to be less emotive. No problems there. As Kree as Kree gets. One important characteristic for any MCU lead is charisma, and Miss Larson has literally no charisma in this role. She feels more like a placeholder, waiting for the actual star to take over the role. She never ever seems to truly own the role, and make it her own. She was, in a word, unbelievable. And I mean that in the proper meaning of the word, never once do I believe that she is that character, never once do I actually think she is this bad-ass. There's a point near the end of the film when she is about to go into a battle, and she is walking, presumably 'bad-ass' and she just looks like a fan trying hilariously to be bad-ass, but just being bad. The technical of the film are what we have come to expect for MCU films. They were incredible, beautiful and explosive. Sam Jackson is awesome even as a slightly more lukewarm Fury, although the revelation of how he got his patented wounded eye is frankly disappointed. The star of the movie, of course, was Goose the cat, and as a cat lover myself, I always think there's a place for our feline friends on the big screen. The Skrulls were also brought to life, although a little different from the source material, although I am personally curious to see where this particular version of the Skrulls could go. Their story is undoubtedly the heart of the film, and they were actually more human and made me feel more than it's Academy Award winning lead. The film, in effect, should not exist yet. Placing it just before Endgame is frankly puzzling. Surely the current Avengers arc can be solved without the need of yet another all-powerful Mary Sue character. I cannot be feel that the entire story might have been better served to be part of a new arc rather than latching on to a soon-to-be old arc. In closing, Captain Marvel was an unnecessary movie that likely should have been made in a few years rather than now. It is an enjoyable film, not exceptional, and suffers from, sadly, the most uninspired lead the MCU has yet seen. It also trod on dangerous group in respect to both the source material as well as pre-established MCU lore. Marvel, I don't need to tell you to respect the Lore. It's what Stan Lee, God rest his soul, would have done. Hopefully, course correction will come. But thankfully, despite it's flaws, it is not The Last Jedi I feared it would be. Expand

in summary: It wasn't awful. It wasn't amazing. It wasn't boring or edge on seat whole time. It wasn't just meh either though.

plot: It didn't have a super predictable or confusing plot. The plot was good and did help give MCU Captain Marvel origin, even though as a comic book fan it wasn't very true to the source material, it also didn't verge too far from it.

acting: The acting was decent or at least on par with overall other MCU origin films (except Iron Man and Ant-Man, which were THE perfect actor for the role).Brie wasn't just monotone or expressionless like some are saying and lot speculated. Brie was very stoic/serious in behavior but it made sense though for the story and what it looked like they wanted to portray character development wise. Some of the emotions did seem a bit forced or fake at times but it again maybe could be justified by the character's state of mind and understanding of whats happening.

music: The final main fight song was a poor choice to me but the fight choreography at least matched it well and could make sense. I just felt like it made a scene that was important more "fun" and it didn't seem like it fit there. My father who did watch the movie with me didn't have an issue with it however.

CGI/FX: The CGI/Special effects I feel could been better at times but they didn't distract too much from watching the film or from the plot.

other: There was some humor moments like a typical Marvel film has, even if some of them fell flat for me.

It also did help fill in some "plot holes" from earlier MCU films, even if one those "fills" is stupid as heck to me.

It can be hard to relate to Cptn Marvel, but it makes sense some due to what the movie is and how much she even knows about herself. I also am worried some about her being too OP but Marvel can probably handle adding her in without making it a "superman complex" issue like happened in Justice League...hopefully.

overall: I give it between a 6.5 to 7 out of 10 (sorry but just an option of out of 5 is too limiting for the complexity of how I try to rate things)

This is using it comparable to one the best MCU (solo) films and my personal favorite (winter soldier) which is a 7.8 on imdb. This makes it about on par with Captain America's and Thor's origin films, and lower then Iron man and GoG origin films which is how I place it. When I make my MCU list from fave to least I rated it at about the 13th MCU film...with Captain America and Homecoming right by it (so its not a BAD film) and this is rating it comparably to the other MCU films.

overall(general public): if wanting to know how it is as an individual film the score is higher, since I feel like I could watch it maybe twice in a year and still be content and enjoy each viewing. So not comparing it to the MCU films and just as if its a good movie...It would be more like an 8 or 8.5. Its an enjoyable watch.

On the political side: If you watched it without any idea about the comments or controversy made, you probably wouldn't notice anything. Its not at all "in your face about it" or clearly pushing an agenda. But knowing the comments one scene is very clearly "girl power",but it also still makes sense in context of the plot.

This review was by a marvel MCU and comics fan, so may be rated a bit higher than the general public or lesser marvel fan may give it.

And because of all the drama about reviews being faked: I don't see it as a 10/10 or 1/10 film. Some may but most won't unless trying/wanting to prove a point.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At the end of the day a Marvel movie with the right music to set a mood and a good budget for impressive graphics.
However the one thing that got the most reactions in the theater was no human but a cat. This is something to consider when an animal upstages the human actors.
The supporting cast did a great job with what they were given.
The main character however seems to be a peculiar case of a superheroine.
Superheroes are supposed to have something in them that makes them want to go beyond and risk their life. A personal stake, an ideal or a loved one.
Carol Danvers gave me the feeling that she is just there and doing what she does for the heck of it instead of some heroic aspiration or necessity. Even if there was a deeper reason in there it was not expanded.
She is not a very inspiring heroine, she its more of a power fantasy/fanfiction self-insert character.
In terms of power she is a bit too strong for making a thrilling story out of it. It is rare that a hero/heroine is made so powerful that an entire army with enough firepower to blow up the Earth makes a U-turn and flees. They usually at least try their luck for the sake of some entertaining action.
This highlights another issue. There is no real villain to overcome through a struggle. All of them are too weak to provide a conflict to this protagonist
It is a fun movie but Carol Danvers is not the right hero/heroine to the face of the MCU/Avengers moving forward.
I can remember more from last years infinity war/black panther than the recent Captain Marvel, it was that forgetable

This is a review that was too radical to post on RT apparenlty

I would have rated higher but the character lacked depth. I also didn't appreciate that Disney seems to be shoehorning politics into their movies nowadays (even if, in this case, the whole thing has been blown way out of proportion). However, the film did have some positive female messages but, again, the obvious media bias surrounding the movie detracts from this. Expand

Not going opening weekend was a good thing, I think. Overall, the movie is OK. The writing for the movie is pretty decent, with the funny scenes you would expect from any Marvel movie these days. The plot is not very interesting or exciting, but if you're going to see the movie just to see Captain Marvel's origin story and her place in the MCU, it's fine. In many ways, the movie is designed to be a teaser for Endgame, and in that role, it does its job.

Brie's performance in the movie may not have been Oscar worthy, but it was good. I think some people's opinions of her are biased by some of the things she's said prior to the film's release. And, she's said some objectively incorrect things.

My only wish is that Brie and others would realize that people who are critical of the movie are not necessarily critical because of sexist reasons. I'm sorry, the plot to the movie is thin. It just is. That has nothing to do with who is the protagonist. The people who say stuff like that (I'm looking at you, Brie, Clark, et al) forget that the same people criticizing this movie loved movies like Wonder Woman, Rogue One, Alita: Battle Angel, Atomic Blonde, Aliens, Ghost in the Shell (once you get past the white washing), and others, all of whom came first and all of whom did it better. If the fans have such a problem with female heroines, why do those movies all have better reviews? Don't blame gender politics, look within, and make better movies.

I didn't see much of that going on, plus her character is overpowered from the very start. She's boring for the same reason superman is boring. Best performances are from Samuel Jackson and a CGI cat. I was fun to go back to the 1990's for a little while and the little jokes about loading from a modem, etc, were the best parts. If you want to watch a superhero movie with a strong empowered female lead then Gal Gadot as wonder woman is miles better. Expand

In short pretty uninteresting and boring. They probably could have done a better job if it didn't need to be rushed out before the sequel to Infinity War.
Marvel really dropped the ball on this one.

The CGI is good (I mean its Marvel, what else you've expected) Samuel Jackson is as fun and charismatic as always, but the plot, the Mary Sue main character are just not worth the time wasted. A 2 hours long film with a 40 minute substance.

The plot is a generic "new Marvel hero" movie with cliche villain and plot points, if you watched ANY hero's solo movie, you watched this one too. I thought Black Panther was one of the worst Marvel's films, but I rewatched it 3 months later and actually had a lot of fun with it, so Captain Marvel is one of the worst now, if Green Lanter wouldn't exist, CM could probably be THE worst. Not to mention that main performance is also incredibly lazy, Brie Larson (which I honestly like despite her overwhelming racism to the white men) just doesn't play in this movie, her character experiences different problems but her facial expression never changes, I don't understand what happened to Brie but this is most definitely her worst performance.

+1 for CGI|+1 for Samuel Jackson|+1 for Stan Lee's cameo|+1 for somewhat competent comedy.

While the other franchises are being more and more individually distinguished in style, theme and tone, cpt marvel has failed to really stand out in style. The tone was inconsistent, too casual to be serious in many scenes which make it difficult for me. and cpt marvel isnt a very inspiring person. she got her power by chance and seemed to just use her powers irresponsibly and impulsively, which makes her a poor leader or even a soldier, when shes supposed to be from a military background. the de-aging CG was great on jacksons face but else where pretty sub par. This is a pretty average movie but def not as bad as the media says. Expand

I also thought the exposition was too obvious and frequent. It could have been handled more organically.

Bad parts: the third act was lame, she believes in herself and become superduper Ma-Rey Sue. Worst part of it was the badly written Captain Marvel character and the acting of Brie Larson. She is a boring Mary Sue, and Brie just walk around and deliver her lines with a resting ****
Mostly entertaining, but also one of the more forgettable Marvel movies and not necessary to watch before Endgame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. *whew* Well this was... disappointing. "Captain Marvel" in every sense of the word, feels just like a lazy, half-baked movie, with little to no substance. The plot itself centers around our titular character trying to find a past she can't remember. Hey, Marvel, quick question. How did you make it not interesting?!?!? Like come on, their are so many routes to take with a hero not able to remember their past but decide to keep doing what they think is right. Where did you guys take it? The most generic place possible. On the one hand, I do like Nick Fury in this a whole lot, and their are some very funny moments, but overall, it's a very 'meh' film, and i find this a problem for three specific reasons. 1. You made the character of "Ant-Man" interesting!!! This shouldn't have been hard to make her interesting. 2. Theirs a lot of claims this is the big women empowerment movie, and if I was a woman, and this wad the movie you gave me, I'd be pissed off to no extent. 3. "Alita: Battle Angel" came out, and that had an interesting female lead, great action, and amazing side characters. Why do I bring this up? Because you're Marvel, you're the top dogs of interesting leads, lovable side characters, and great action. This whole movie is just so meh, because their is obviously some effort thrown into it, but not with passion. Take "Black Panther"; despite all its flaws, it's very evident the movie was made with so much passion and heart. This feels like no passion went into it, and it very clearly shows. I'm not against women centered, or female empowerment movies at all, but I want to see them done right. If I ever have a daughter, and she wants to see something bad ass with women in it, I'm gonna show her "Alita", or "Wonder Woman", because those are well done, passionate, and show her it's okay for her to be who she is. All I can is, please don't let "Black Widow" suck. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay,

Honestly considering all the press debacles Brie Larson was causing I wasn't going to watch this movie. However my friend invited me and I misunderstood him (Thought we we're going to see Shazam otherwise known as Captain Marvel in the DC universe). So when I arrived I didn't have much in expectations.

So the movie itself isn't a bad film, it's also not a great film. The movie itself probably should've been the lead in movie for the next phase. Like a flashback film after Endgame where Captain Marvel explains her ties to Earth etc. But this film definitely didn't need to be force fed right before endgame.

So let's talk specifics:
1. Characters - Honestly the main character is written in a god awful manner. It's like watching Kristen Stewart play Bella Swan from Twilight because the character is a bland terrible character. Kristen Stewart got a lot of flack for this only to find out later she has a much wider range of expressive emotions. It all comes down to how the character is written. The rest of the cast isn't particularly stunning either. While Samuel L. Jackson did a decent job as Fury his entire attitude seemed off considering the Fury we know. I know this is a prequel but there should have shown more character development for him to become who we know currently. The other problem is the main character isn't really given any challenges to overcome and direct main enemy to beat (see Iron man 1's Obadiah Stane and Iron Man 2's Whiplash)

2. Plot - A confused mess with a stupid twist you start seeing clearly from about the first quarter of the movie. Given the history of the Skrull & Kree in the comics the way they portrayed the factions is honestly rife with current real world political culture instead of established Marvel lore. There was more they could've done with back story but they chose not to the result is a ultimately unmotivated plot.

3. Nostalgia - Since the movie takes place in the 90's it's riddled with nostalgia as a selling point. Most of this was hamfisted in, especially where the soundtrack is concerned. In earlier reviews I heard them discussing certain music choices including one big one at the end of the movie. Honestly after watching it I understand where they're coming from. Some of the music, including the one at the end simply don't fit with the overall sequences resulting in viewer whiplash.

Other issues:

We have to discuss the main actress Brie Larson and her media debacles leading up the Captain Marvel. Her actions are damaging the Disney/Marvel brand by pushing debateable and often refutable "social justice" ideas and beliefs. When she states she doesn't want white men to see the movie she's talking about a gigantic swath of the fan/customer base. That's particularly troubling for any industry but it's worse in film making. Because the more an Actor/Actress shows of their real self the harder it is to separate them from the character(s) they portray on screen. This is something Kevin Spacey (as terrible choices as he's made) was correct at by keeping his private beliefs and thoughts to himself. This way when you thought of Kevin Spacey you thought to the roles he played (Kaiser Soze, 7 etc) versus Kevin Spacey the person.

*Spoilers*

Marvel plot issues. In the lead up to Captain Marvel they pushed her as being the "strongest" Avenger. However her power has the same source as Scarlet Witch originating from a infinity stone. I'm not sure on the power hierarchy among the stones but this seems just silly from both a marketing and plot/story continuity standpoint. The character herself is shown to not have any real weaknesses during the film. Which is problematic when you're trying to make a relatable character. The one thing (her emotions) which is portrayed as a weakness at the start of the film is surprise, a hidden source of strength all along! It makes her unimaginative and slowly turns her into a Mary Sue as she never really fails at anything she does unlike the rest of the characters.

Final:

Is this movie seeing? Honestly you don't need to. It's not integral to the story at all. Again it's not a bad movie, it's just unimaginative and unnecessary to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the long run. Given this outing and depending on how Endgame plays out the idea that Captain Marvel will replace Captain America & Ironman as the leads for the MCU is debatable and currently unlikely.
