This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is not bad but it's also not great it's just fine. The first half of the film is slow but when it picks towards it's quite enjoyable. There are lot of problems with the film like the pacing, the story is disjointed. Brie Larsons acting is okay, Samuel l Jackson is good in the film and the rest of the cast does a good job. The humour works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't land. Captain marvel herself doesn't really have an actual flaw or character arc she is the same character she was at the start of film as she was at the end of film just more powerful. The good things about the film are nick Fury's relationship with carol danvers. How Nick Fury lost his eye is really dumb. The skrulls twist in the film was good but I wish they had shown us more about the skrulls and their planet. But overall I think you should watch the film and form your own opinion on it.
Summary: It's a good film but it's also dull.

Jackson,Ben Mendelsohn and Annette Bening. Brie Larson could not shine as an actress because she did not get enough material. This was a very straight forward movie- "Look Captain Marvel is so strong and Krees are so bad" and very hollow within. The movie takes a long time to pick up and the motivations are not even clear for who is fighting for what exactly. The fighting scenes look good but they are too short. also Captain Marvel has zero weakness what so ever like she doesn't even have much of an emotional attachment and flies through spaceships like its wind. I pray to God please don't make The End Game as bad as this. Expand

Is it bad? No. Is it good? No. Is it an average, dull, generic, and extremely flawed superhero origin story? Yes!

Pros: The tributes to Stan Lee are beautiful and very touching, the movie wasn’t as much of a misandrist wokefest as I thought it was going to be, some of the action scenes are fun to watch, and Goose is funny and adorable. (I just really love cats. Sue me!)

Cons: Nick Fury is a complete joke in this movie, Carol Danvers is an emotionless character with no flaws and no personality, the movie takes place in the 90s but feels completely inauthentic and inconsistent with the time period, the sexism that Carol experiences is unrealistic and over-the-top, the movie retcons the entire MCU just to make its Mary Sue protagonist seem more important than she really is, and given the fact that Carol is written as an overpowered and flawless character, I never felt that there was any real conflict.

All in all, the movie was better than I feared it would be (I was expecting it to be complete garbage), but it was just so bland and boring. I don’t want to see a movie about a talking plank of wood; I want to see a movie with character development and stakes. I want to see a movie that takes place in the 90s (my childhood) that doesn’t feel like modern-day America with characters that tell you how “90s” the movie is every two minutes. I want to see a movie where the men aren’t emasculated and the women aren’t perfect saints who have no flaws and can do no wrong. And I want to see a Marvel movie that’s actually consistent with the rest of the MCU, not just shoehorned in for the sake of “Gurl Powar!”

And no, I am not a misogynist for saying all this. (Kind of hard for me to be a misogynist, considering the fact that I’m a woman).

While not bad, it's nothing special. A key positive is the entire supporting cast (Sam L Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, and even the cat, Goose). They are the best part of this movie as they definitely give great performances. I'm also a sucker for 90s nostalgia being a 90s kid. The action and the lead, however, are pretty lifeless and don't have any of the excitement usually found in MCU movies, especially coming off the clever fight scenes in both Infinity War and Ant-Man & The Wasp and great charm in performances given by most actors in the MCU. However, I do feel given better writing, Larson can give Captain Marvel the gusto needed to make her a good character. The plot also feels very "phase 1" and I strongly disliked some of the retconning done in this film. I see promise for the character in the future and there were some promising moments in this film, but this film was underwhelming and joins Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk as some of the MCU's worst. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the weaker MCU films that really never finds its stride, the premise is quite good but the execution and performances aren’t and there are some plot holes that spoil the film for me. Whether it is a casting or script problem for me Brie Larson doesn’t really present a capturing character. I get it that her thing (before being basically gifted her abilities in a plane crash) is that she is a battler who doesn’t lie down. However, this is only demonstrated in flash backs which dont flesh the character out as you never really get caught up in the drama of those moments. Plus in the film people are far more horrible to her and more consistently than you would believe is credible in real life unless that person was a total detestable cretin.. Other issues with the film for me were I knew from the first five minutes that she was siding with “bad guys” as one of the kree was a villain in guardians of the galaxy.. in terms of viewing chronology it would be better to see this film first...

Finally the skulls are presented as peaceful loving family type aliens which removes any doubt as to the worthiness of captain marvel finding them a home. Hmm it would have been better if they were also evil scumbags who were thoroughly despicable and have a moral play on whether it is just to accept / participate in their genocide. Similarly the kree are also one dimensional characters which is disappointing. Even if we we know some of them are total jerks we could have had some ambiguity in the film, her team could have shown some conflict about having to fight her (one does in one scene), but this should have been much more developed and explored.

It's a generic Marvel superhero film from there, with a few brief flashes of chemistry sprinkled unevenly. Again, I wouldn't have chosen Brie Larson for the role, but I'm not throwing out the idea that 'Captain Marvel' could have better sequels, like 'Thor'. But I'm not really optimistic, either. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film was alright.... which is a shame for a marvel film as they usually score quite highly.
The film was somewhat predictable though the twist at the end just seemed quite out of character from what you see.
Yes this film is a bit of a feminist film, which is a shame as I don't see why it can't just be a superhero film where the hero is a woman?

There wasn't much in the way of progression in the character as she just gets her superpowers and now she is the most powerful one there... hardly any struggle for it etc... oh I don't know.. I could go on and on about the film but I won't as its simply a meh film. Worth watching once but I don't think I will bother to watch again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain Marvel isn’t just a cookie cutter Marvel origin story. It’s focus on autopsy and self knowledge makes it a storyline that is tailor made for a different kind of hero and a different kind of audience. A lot of the villainy of the film has to do with control of female power through gaslighting and other forms of deception. Carol’s recognition of her own power and her conscious moral alignment with the downtrodden is central to the drama of this story.

Captain Marvel is a bit of a slog for the first half of the movie. Vers is amnesiac and a little bit neutered, and the conflict between the Kree and a race of watermelon/chameleon (or “watermeleon”) people manages to be both confusing and yet unoriginal. The story warms up in the second half–the fight scenes are played for laughs. It’s where Brie Larson’s understated swagger and impish braggadocio best fit her physicality. The flashback scene in which the shapeshifters spin through Vers’s memory like an amateur DJ is visually interesting way to tell backstory, because it’s not quite a passive learning experience. There seems like there’s room for an unreliable narrator and some manipulation of people and places and events, and the unsettling commentary overlaid and Vers’s unsettled expression ups the creep-factor.

There are some confusing aspects to the movie and its got a few disappointments. Spoilers.

Confusing: Why is she called Captain Marvel? Do we at any point have foreshadowing that what the one guy finds at the lab is actually why they’ve come? Because everyone looks pretty surprised except Carol, who seems like she’s figured it out. And then the wife’s explanation is equally unsuitable and vague.

Disappointing: the iconic scene from the trailer that you’re hoping is a super cut, Dunkirk-style, of three separate storylines, is, in fact, actually a single moment where three scenes we’ve never witnessed at any other part of the film are spliced together to make for a faux-meaningful moment of the resilience of women/humanity getting back up after they’ve been knocked down. What was so traumatizing on that day at the beach when she was four years old that it’s lodged in her memory at that life-or-death moment in the climax? Why is her strained relationship with her parents so generically bad? Why does no one shoot Carol in the head while she’s being restrained by the AI overlord of the Kree? Also, why does the Kree have an AI overlord and then also that other dude in the hood calling the shots? Where’s the flow chart for this organization?

I’m not entirely certain that this film would hold up to multiple viewings. It seems like the major twist and a lot of the gags are visual jokes that rely on an unexpected component of identity being shifted. That being said, I wouldn’t discourage anyone from finding out. I’ll see you on the other end of my extended break in Europe. Have a lovely March!

- A wooden performance by the main character. Without Samuel Jackson and a digital cat, this movie would be unbearable.
- A generic, uninteresting story.
- The de-prioritization of story in the pursuit of a political agenda (man-bashing toxic feminism).
- A negative montage of men and boys…because what’s toxic feminism without attacking males?
- With one exception (Agent Coulson), pretty much every white male in the movie is portrayed negatively. - Gender swapping Mar-Vell (the male “Captain Marvel” who Carol Danvers leeched her powers from in the comics). We can’t have a MAN be a legendary hero that is looked up to by Danvers, you know!!
- Absolutely NO chemistry between Carol Danvers and the person who is portrayed as her best friend. In keeping with SJW “don’t need no man!” orthodoxy, this relationship is the stand-in for what would normally be a romantic relationship (see Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. Can anyone really say “Wonder Woman” is *worse* as a result of having Chris Pine in it??).
- A main character who is a nobody that Marvel is desperate to make a somebody. Marvel Comics has tried over and over and over and over to get a series for her that someone would read. All cancelled. Now they are forcing her into the cinematic universe. And not only have they forced her on us, but they have (of course) made her the most powerful hero in the universe AND the person that “The Avengers” got their name from. Say, I thought the first Captain America movie, based in WW2 (about 30 years before Carol Danvers was born) was called “Captain America: THE FIRST AVENGER.” Well, ignore that! We have to promote Captain Marvel because feminism!

Now we know why Disney refused to allow reviews until two days before the release. They need to trick as many people as possible into buying a ticket before word of mouth sinks this movie.

Plot 4/10 - Visuals 6/10 - Dialogue 2/10 - Music 6/10 - Acting 4/10 - Fight scenes 4/10.

I was very scared before watching this movie because of all the drama and the politics involved. I still went to see it because I did not want to miss anything before Endgame.
For the ones who are scared about these politics and the feminism promotion, as someone which is very much against it, I'd tell you it's ok; it does not take more than a couple minutes of the movie but these moments are very cringy. You may also find that the casting seems to have been directed at very specific groups but it was also ok.

However despite this, pretty much everything about this movie in underwhelming: the plot, the characters, the twists, the ending and even the after ending scenes.
They also tried to give background stories to iconic avengers elements and it's all pretty bad.

The movie is not that bad in the end but it's pretty boring, nothing about this movie is good, the dialogues are for sure terrible but the rest is just "Meh".

This would not be such a problem as other Marvel films had the same types of problems (Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor 2...) if they did not want to make Captain Marvel the center of the upcoming movies. The hero is not likeable, not inspiring and had no public support before the movie. If they keep her as a secondary character, they might be able to save her just like the Russos changed Tony Stark and Thor but she does not have what it takes to be the centre of this universe. Please Marvel, go with Spiderman or Starlord for this, they have what it takes.

And if you really really want a woman for some reasons, there are other better women characters in Marvel, this one is just not the right one...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After seeing all the controversy and all the politics for the last few months, I tried to see this movie with an open mind. I walked in to watch a Marvel movie and walked out with a "Meh" on my mind. For an origin movie, it was not bad. It was not good, but not bad. The liberties taken with the source material is usual in the case of the MCU, but the changes that were made stuck with an agenda I was uncomfortable experiencing as it was nagging in my mind. It was a similar feeling when I actually saw Ghostbusters 2016 in the cheap seats with family.

Things I Loved: Stan Lee's cameo and tribute at the Marvel Title Crawl and Nick Fury.

Things I Liked: The Blockbuster/Radio Shack/Street Fighter references, Phil Coulson, Talos, and seeing Korath and Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy being played by the same actor for continuity. Things I Liked at the Start and Groaned Later At: Goose the "Cat", the plot and its "twist".

Things I Disliked: The action scenes, Fury not fighting in the final act, bringing the Tesseract into this story, all the flashbacks referring to Carol being talked down by men all her life (I understand that the time frame makes sense for that mindset, but it felt forced and I felt like the visuals could have worked without the men voice-overs of telling her she "didn't belong"), Carol Danvers' power level (over 9000?) at the end as it will affect the MCU as a whole in Avengers Endgame and the future phases.

Things I Hated: Fury's eye loss, Ronan's retreat at the end due to losing a ship and a single load of missiles, not enough Coulson (that's the fan boy talking), the trashing of Mar-Vell as a character as a whole.

Overall, the cast was mixed. Samuel L Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn do take the cake in this movie. Brie Larson did express emotion, despite what others may have said, but she was still a very wooden character and I didn't really root for her at the end like I did with other female characters in the MCU and even DC (Wonder Woman was a superior film, sorry Marvel). The action was okay yet forgettable and I didn't like Fury taking a side-step in the third act. My biggest pet peeve was Mar-Vell. Mar-Vell's gender swap did bother me, despite the fact I didn't bat too much of an eye in Doctor Strange's Ancient One. If it doesn't affect the story, fine. However, Mar-Vell did have a working relationship and sometimes (in recent iterations) a romantic one as well. It could have worked. We have seen men characters rising up due to a romantic interest be in trouble or dying. It could have been done in reverse just as easily here. It didn't, however, and Carol just worked for her on a military project. That was it. Mar-Vell was basically a throwaway character and reversed in gender due to the agenda since I assume they didn't want Carol to get her powers (albeit by accident as per normal canon means) from a man as it would remove all the flashback and current patriarchal society she is trying to defeat. Mar-Vell is here only to show up in the flashbacks, explain a plot point, and having the Supreme Intelligence take her form. I would have accepted and believed more Maria Rambeau being represented as the Supreme Intelligence or even Rambeau's daughter. But we didn't get much screen time with Mar-Vell and we just see three separate sections about her. One was her saying two sentences or so. Two, explaining that the engine would end wars. Three, her death and final words to Carol Danvers. Captain Mar-Vell was a warrior and had empathy towards humanity and had a strong history in the Marvel Multiverse. This was a character assassination for an agenda.

I feel like this was a lazy effort. We had Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and now the Wasp as strong women, as well as newcomers Okoye, Nakia, and even Shuri from Black Panther/Infinity War. Black Widow and Scarlet Witch should have taken the lead with a stand alone movie. Instead, I fear these previous women characters will take the backseat when Carol Danvers will take over the MCU without properly earning it. They even had Carol Danvers' call-sign in the Air Force "Avenger"! I don't like the direction the MCU is taking despite how well Avengers Infinity War took the entire Cinematic Universe to an incredible level. I just hope Endgame and the rest of the MCU from hereon does not suffer a crippling blow due to this movie.

Also, you might have noticed I did not connect Captain Marvel with Carol Danvers, calling her specifically by her name only. I really don't think she earned that title based on how bad they treated Mar-Vell and how she never earned her extreme power properly (like Rey in Star Wars). Maybe she will later, but if this movie is any indication, I'm not holding my breath.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok so first off the Stan Lee tribute was very heartwarming and probably the only emotion I felt in the entire movie. Had it not been for the tribute, this movie would probably be ranked lower that the 5 I gave it. The quality of this movie feels to be somewhere between a Disney Channel special and a Syfy Channel movie. The story was very slow and by the time the pace started picking up I had already checked out and was not interested. The humor was weak in my opinion and I think only one joke made me laugh. Most Marvel movies I can leave the theater and recall my favorite parts. I left this movie feeling empty and relieved it was over. Samuel L. Jackson's role as Fury felt out of character to me. Weve been used to a serious, but sometimes cuts a joke here and there, Nick Fury. This version of a younger Fury did not feel like the same person. Fury was more laid back and made jokes as much as he could. Fury was pretty much the comedic relief of the movie and not the strong, get things done, Fury weve had since Iron Man. Yeah change is good, but this was not a good change in my opinion. Next the cat...I did not like the cat. The reveal was nice to see but then it was overused and lost its hype, quickly. Also it was pretty predictable that the cat would be the reason Fury lost his eye, which was also overused and lost its appeal. The way the movie kept joking and teasing the audience about how Fury may lose his eye was a gag that fell flat. Every time something happened to Fury they movie would draw attention to his eye for a huge build up and DUD, he'd be fine. Then finally at the end of the movie the cat claws his eye in the most anti climatic fashion. Maybe the whole joke was to make people feel like Fury was an awesome soldier who lost his eye from something spectacular, only to make it this made up story of grandeur. It felt very Snoke-ish to me as a fan. Now onto Brie Larson or Carol Danvers. Brie's performance was very bland in this movie. I didnt feel any authentic connection she was having with any of her other co-stars. The movie tried to get the audience to feel a connection with her long lost friend towards the end, but it also fell flat due to it being mixed with a plot twist. Onto the character of Captain Marvel itself. Captain Marvel, CM, felt very much like a Mary Sue. CMs power level through the movie went from being a super hero to god by the end of the movie. To quote the late great Ron Burgundy "Well that escalated quickly." CM went from single handily beating waves of bad guys and upgrading to beating waves of massive space ships and causing a fleet of Ronan the Accuser's ships to retreat. Then after seeing her demolish gigantic space ships she faces her true enemy in the movie, Jude Law's character, who doesn't have godlike powers. It was like watching someone beat Floyd Mayweather and then having a 4 year old as the next match. Im assuming that was also another joke that fell flat due to its delivery. My biggest complaint was the heavy feminist points. Im ok with the movie being having a strong female character, but when the movie constantly throws it in your face "hey! men are douches" or "did you see how rude that MAN was??" It was a bit annoying and took me out of the movie and felt as if I was watching CNN. I was waiting for a gender pay gap reference by the end of the movie. This movie had potential to be a good movie, but it feels like a lot of it's problem was the execution or delivery. The end credit scenes were just bland, important, but bland. How CM just pops up behind Black Widow and in this Ben Stein voice asks "Where's Fury?" was comical, to me. The second end credit scene was drawn out and predictable. When the movie ended I already figured out the end credit scene would be the cat coughing it up and that's exactly what happened. The movie definitely feels like a somewhere in the middle kind of movie. It did not live up to expectation or to the Marvel name. Expand

The problem I have is that I don't think it is as good as many other marvel films in the MCU. There's a great message about being your true self and finding the power within, however there is a moment in the film that contradicts this and they play it off as if it is just something that's okay. I won't say what it is for spoiler reasons. For the things that I liked about it, the sci-fi elements were cool, especially the world of the Kree. Their empire was really cool to see especially after seeing them in Guardians of the Galaxy. I also liked Ben Mendelson who plays Talos, and Samuel L. Jackson who plays once again the one and only Nick Fury. The performances all around except for Brie Larson were pretty good.
Another I want to say is that they do a tremendous tribute to the late great Stan Lee. It is such a beautiful moment of the film. I won't say what it is but it was really sweet.
Now for the things I don't like, first off, I am not a fan of Brie Larson's performance. I don't like how she is a super sassy egotistical person who I feel doesn't really take things seriously, and when she does, it doesn't feel like Brie Larson actually cares enough. She was in my opinion, the downside to this movie. I am hoping later on they can develop her character more, because this movie did not do that at all. Brie Larson is a talented actress, but the direction and writing of her character in this movie fell flat. Overall this movie just feels like set up for Avengers Endgame with no real character development. Carol Danvers is an unlikeable person, and I'm hoping she develops into a superhero that I can be inspired by. Thor did that for me in Ragnarok, but I don't want to wait 3 or 4 movies with Captain Marvel before I start to feel as though she is someone who I feel is inspiring. If you like this movie, that's fine, if you don't like this movie, that's okay too. There's nothing wrong with disliking this movie, or even hating it. Just as there's no reason for loving this movie and thinking it is just okay. It's a decent movie for people looking to just simply be entertained, but for me, I expect something more out of the MCU which has given us some of the best characters in cinema.

Captain Marvel: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Spoiler-Free) I will make it very simple and clear: this movie is a mixed bag.

This movie had the potential to be an fresh take on the MCU: because it is set in the 90s, it doesn't need to account for the majority of events in the last 21 movies. The movie could have been an island of creativity. Unfortunately, it feels more like how many superhero movies used to be made in the late 90s and early 2000s: one dimensional, predictable and formulaic. >>>>> The Good: 1) Samuel L Jackson in EVERY scene he is in. Funny without being silly. De-aging CGI was perfect. 2) Ben Mendelssohn switches from dark menacing to light humour seamlessly. Great acting even with heavy makeup. 3) Jude Law's character in the first half of the movie was multi-layered and interesting (until the script ruined it). 4) The Rambeau daughter and mother actresses are good with what is given to them. 5) The spaceships dogfights are the best CGI in the film. 6) Stan Lee's tribute was heartwarming >>>>> The Bad: 1) When the cat is CGI (most of the time) it is very noticeable. 2) They never cared to explain how a Flerken ended up on an US Air Force base. 3) The CGI on CM face when she unleashed her full power is bad. Modern videogame cutscenes have more believable characters. 4) There are no high stakes by the end of the movie. Not once you feel she was in peril or her failing was a possibility. 5) Ronan the Accuser: the characters added nothing to the movie, he is just an Easter egg. Lee Pace's makeup and acting somehow was worse than 5 years ago in GotG. 6) Except for Talos, the Skrulls masks weren’t all that great. Reminded me of the 90’s Star Trek TV show. >>>>> The Ugly: 1) The pacing is terrible. The movie just don’t know what it wants to be. The movie started off interesting, with a Memento like premisse with confusing flashbacks and the main character trying to piece them togheter. But, as soon as she lands on Earth (act two), there’s no more character arc: it’s a straight line. The movie drags and becomes predictable and boring from the midway onwards. 2) So, so much filler... The movie is full of scenes that don’t develop her character (more on that latter) or move the plot forward. The train/subway chase scene is the most evident example. 3) Brie Larson’s performance: by far, the biggest problem going on for this movie. If the script required her to be emotionless and robotic, she would have been a perfect casting. However, in the first three minutes her character smiles (Jude Law’s character even tells her that humor is a distraction) proving that Carol Danvers is capable of emoting. That’s the most unsettling part of her acting: every time the script demands that she shows emotions, Larson feels forced and unnatural. She even managed to botch her reaction to the big (and kinda predictable) plot twist at the end of he second act. She couldn’t sell her friendship with Rambeau as believable either. Larson is so bland on this movie that every support actor/actress that she shares the screen with seen vivid by comparison. She never felt relatable of inspiring. By the end of the movie, I couldn't tell what kind of personality CM had. The script/dialogue told me she was supposed to be witty and snarky, but unfortunately she lacks the charming personality for it to work. People point out that she is an excellent actress because she won an Oscar. Well, Halle Barry starred the atrocious Catwoman the same year she won an Oscar for Monster Ball. If Larson is a good actress, she definitely wasn’t on this movie. 4) The way that Fury lost his eye could have been handled so much better! At least they could have made him fight for the “artifact” and lose his eye as a result. Instead, it was just a gag (his exchange with Coulson about the incident afterwards worked tough). >>>>>>>> Overall, a pretty weak MCU movie, I would rank it among Thor 2: The Dark World, The Incredible Hulk and the last two Iron Man movies. If it weren’t for Larson’s dull performance and inconsistent script, this could have been a better origin movie than Thor and Captain America. And no, you won’t be missing anything important going to Avengers Endgame in case you skip this one.

You also need to choose actresses that wont go out of her way to try and shame half of the population of the planet out of seeing her movie.
From start to finish there are gaping holes, inconsistencies with existing MCU canon and an overall lack of anything exciting. The final nail for me, personally, was the garbage way you got rid of Fury's eye.
Why did you let this happen Marvel? This is what lowest common denominator film producing in current year gets you. You made lots of money, I hope spitting on the people that have kept your business running for years was worth it.

The origin story of Captain Marvel mixed in with the ongoing saga of the tesserac, the Cree and Nick Fury .
At it's core is a female empowerment film where all the way thru she is challenged to 'be the best version of herself' and prove everyone who held he back as a female child/teen/adult back to be wrong.
They even have little flashbacks to show her growing up.
She arrives on earth and snarks her way through the rest of the film with little resistance and by the end she is unstoppable. Like a combination of all the avengers powers added together and multiplied x10.
Fury is a younger computer generated version and plays it for goofy laughs most of the time and there is a bit of M.I.B mixed into the film.
As for how she will fit into the Infinity Wars End Game film goes the words Deus Ex Machina come to mind.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie just felt empty. The Script was not written well. Carol Danvers doesn't develop as a character like a Captain America or a Black Widow. How she acts, talks at the beginning of the movie it is how it ends. There is no stability in the character throughout the movie, she just one lines, relationships that she has on earth feel 'akward', 'forced', 'weird', and she becomes the most powerful avenger somehow. It feels like those movies that are long and you later try to remember how/ why is this movie so long. There are quite some good concepts in this movie (Carson being a Skrull at the beginning) but ultimately it could have been better executed (Especially how Nick Fury lost his eye). This movie puts great pressure on the Russo Brothers. Captain Marvel better not one-punch Thanos. Hopefully, the Russo Brothers will 'develop' this character rightly in the future. Expand

In general an interesting movie with some very good visual effects, just a some flaws here and there, and a story with an unexpected outcome. The final battle feels very unadecuate and unbalanced. In the end I see potencial here but it's wasted to much degree. Changes in the canon from the comics seem interesting for the most part (there's one I think was innecesary but it’s not that relevant) and I look forward to what may come from them in the future but in the same way I regret a little bit the limitations that they impose and which they come with. Brie Larson is Ok as Carol but lacks as Captain, I hope there’s a better and original script for her in further appearances. The rest of the cast is fine as well and Jude Law few appereances feel interesting in this role. If Wonder Woman is an A or a 10, this one is a B- or a 7. Within the MCU I would place it above Ant-Man and the Wasp and Guardians 2 but below the first Ant-Man movie. Expand

Since that time, the popularity of the Marvel franchise has only grown and the call for a female lead movie has only increased with each passing year. In 2019, her time has come, as Marvel introduces its most powerful hero to us on the cusp of Endgame, Captain Marvel.

The movie opens with Vers, a member of the Kree Starforce. She’s plagued by dreams of another life, one that seems familiar, but she cannot place. He mentor Yon-Rogg, continually lectures her about her emotional state and how her emotions and memories are holding back her true power. The Supreme Intelligence (an artificial intelligence for the Kree people that is a collection of all their greatest minds) reminds Vers of this same thing, her power can be taken away, just as it was given, if she does not learn to fall in line, control her emotions and follow orders. On top of all of this, there are the shapeshifting Skrulls, the sworn enemies of the Kree who are seen as terrorists, infiltrating planets clandestinely to turn them against the Kree.

If all of this seems like a lot, it is. The beginning of the movie is disjointed and disorienting. It takes a while to catch everything that is happening, who is who and how it all fits together. It’s also not helped by flashbacks to Veers previous life on Earth. This is the single biggest problem with the movie. The prehistory of Vers (Carol Danvers), is one of immense hardship, a bad family, constantly being told she’s not good enough or will never make it, always being put down. Her past life is struggle.

The issue is, that this theme of struggle seems incongruous with what we see in the present. There is never a situation that Carol is in, that she cannot handle. In fact, it’s all pretty easy for her. Even when her powers are taken away, she is able to beat up everyone in the room.

Her struggle for identity is also a frustration. This should be the core of the movie, the question of, “who am I.” She’s a woman without a past, that is tortured with memories that don’t make sense, yet you never feel that. Honestly Veers and Danvers are pretty much the same. There is not a shift in characterization or tone, it is all one note and that note is, “I’m too cool for school.” In the end, the lead character ends up being the least interesting person on screen.

This is accentuated but the fact that she is surrounded by good actors on every side. Samuel L. Jackson is back as a younger Fury and he’s great. You truly believe this is a man that’s confronted with his first alien encounter, that this is his first step into a much larger world. Ben Mendelsohn steals the show as the Skrull Talos. Every time he is on screen, he’s electric. Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau is better here than Larson. Her portrayal of Danvers’ best friend is heartfelt and emotional.

Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, both are de-aged in the film. At first, it is off-putting, as it does not look completely believable. Gregg unfortunately will never look right, but Jackson does begin to look better throughout the film and some scenes are better than others. Unfortunately the inconstancy draws your attention to something the filmmakers want you to be able to forget, but never can.

Captain Marvel never reaches the heights of Marvel’s best. There aren’t stand out action moments that you’ll walk out of the theater talking about. The lack of narrative and thematic cohesion, plus the lack of a strong arc for the main character put the movie firmly in middle of the Marvel pack, it’s neither a train wreck or a stand out, it’s just kinda there. What’s most disappointing is not feeling like Carol Danvers is anything other than a powerful pawn being placed on the Marvel board for a movie that’s not her’s. Carol Danvers deserved better. Captain Marvel is rated 3 out 5 stars.

It wasn't a complete bore, though some parts of the pacing made me want to look at my watch, and in fact, I did look at my phone once, to check what time it was, since the dialogue and story was just dragging on at a couple of points in the movie. Casual movie-goers, and general audience will find something to look at and enjoy for the moment. MCU fans, comic book readers and folks who look at movies with a more critical eye will find PLENTY of issues with it. From the acting, dialogue, plot holes and established lore, it had a lot going on that just didn't mix well. I expected more from Brie, an oscar winner and whatnot, but this was just sub-par. Jude Law, Samuel Jackson and others outshined her, and her character did not feel central to the movie, at least for me. Overall, it's a fun but shallow movie. There's not much to bite into and plenty of flaws (too many considering this is a big budget Marvel film) that avid fans and honest critics will obviously take issue with. To put it simply, it has the salsa, but none of the meat. It's a 5/10 for me. Expand

This was unfortunately a mediocre movie, death by a thousand paper cuts. The direction and editing was amateurish, leading to jostled and uneven pacing and poor storytelling.

The "buddy comedy" element often fell flat. Larson's acting and persona also often seemed a bit flat. The action and combat scenes were par for the course, and often relied on the hackneyed "frame the shot too close and edit it too fast to see what's happening, so as to disguise the otherwise boring choreography" we see too often in movies.

On the whole, this just wasn't up to Marvel standards. It was ok, but nothing special.

Whilst Captain Marvel is a technically proficient super hero blockbuster, it lacks the extra 'umph' and emotion gut punch usually associated with seeing the titular marvel character do their super hero thing in helping the various characters deliver justice.... To use a food analogy, it's like salt free ketchup..... diet coke...quorn meat...a microwave meal... while it initially seems to have some substance, it ultimately lacks that authentic flavour....

Jackson is definitely the stand out in this film, and the rest of the supporting cast mostly hits.

In my honest opinion, the only reason this movie doesn't excel as it should is because it has the burden of serving as origin story to this supposedly integral character during a point in the MCU where an origin story just feels jarring. Infinity raised the stakes so high, and this movie did little to sate my appetite for what's coming next. Had this been a Phase 1 film, it probably would have fared much better, but as it is now, only a month out from Infinity War, it just feels average.

The critical point I can take away from this movie is that Brie Larsson as Captain Marvel was actually quite good, not amazing but she actually did a fine job as Captain Marvel, from the trailers she came off as dry and a charisma vacuum but thank goodness in the movie she was actually funny, witty and kind of charismatic for most of the movie like the usual Marvel Superheroes. She did however have some dry spells in the movie especially some of the dialogue but that didn't ruin the movie for me.So in short Brie Larson did a good enough job in the role of Captain Marvel.

The best characters by far where Yon-Rogg played by Jude Law and Talos the Skrull leader played by Ben Mendelsohn. Both gave very good performances and had compelling story arcs. While Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury was good in the first and second act of the movie, and had great chemistry with Brie Larsson in the 3rd act of the movie Nick Fury become a chump and was rather useless in the movie although I get he is younger and not the Nick Fury we know from other Marvel movies he is just another different person in Captain Marvel which was kind of disappointing.Other characters such as Captain Marvel's friend Maria, the kree police force were fine or were just there and Phil Coulson and Roman were just glorified cameos.

What I liked about the movie was the the pace especially in the first and second act as the movie balanced action and story well. The movie had a fast pace but never too fast and I appreciateed that it didn't have the regular Origin Story formula, however I would have liked for the movie to explore more on Captain Marvel's origins so that I could Care about her character more as there isnt really much character development from Captain Marvel. Of course this is a Marvel movie so it had some funny moments and some uneeded and out of place humor as expected from a Marvel Movie. The skulls were really good in the movie especially Ben's performance as the Skrull leader Talos he was charismatic, funny and had an interesting arc. The movie takes an interesting twist involving the skrulls which was nice and made the movie more interesting.

The villain in this movie comes as a surprise in the movie so I won't spoil it but it is a good twist and makes sense so thumbs up for the villain with is rare for Marvel Movies. The action was fine, nothing spectacular but most of the action sequences were solid, they were just fine thats all I have to say about the action. The CGI was also very good especially the deaging process to Samuel L Jackson was very impressive and the effects on Captain Marvel's powers were cool especially when she had the helmet on it was bad ass.

Now by biggest issue with the movie and what I didn't enjoy was the 3rd act in this movie, my gosh especially the last 30 minutes were just disappointing. There were some bland action sequences, unfunny scenes and it was just the generic Marvel last third fight scene. Now one of the complaints from people is that the character of Captain Marvel is overpowered, I never count this as a bad thing if there are high stakes against the character and if the story is interesting. In Captain Marvel's case there was no serious threat in the 3rd act and the story became bland. Now the 3rd act wasn't that terrible but was just too generic and uninteresting and also really lazy.

Also speaking of lazy some of the dialogue was so cringey sometimes thankfully it was just a small bit but it was still noticeable and although I didn't want to speak on this the feminism and sjw aspect people are complaining about in Captain Marvel, I myself didn't care on those issues and although some of it is in the movie in sprinkles it wasnt preachy or anything as some people are exaggerating. It was noticeable but didn't ma

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a decent superhero film, not amazing, but not terrible. I feel like Captain Marvel is played a bit too stoic/stale up until the second half of the movie. Nick Fury steals the scene on many occasions. The 90's nostalgia bits fit nicely, if not too heavy-handed at times. As for the tie-in to the greater MCU/Avengers storyline, there was very little in the way of impact when it comes to End Game. The bit about how the Avengers got their name felt cheap and forced, something that didn't need to happen, just like when we found out how Han Solo got his name. On the other hand, learning what happened to Fury's eye was a gag played very well throughout the film. Overall, a mixed bag. I can see why some people may enjoy it more than others, the target demographic was very specific, and the movie made no attempt to cover this. It was tiresome at some points, but overall didn't ruin the experience for me. Expand

There has been a question about whether Brie Larson and the producers would artifically add intersectional feministic plot points to the film, and this is the certainly case. There are many depictions of men "surpressing captain marvel", some of which are even shown up to three times throughout the movie. It ranges from her father, to her co-workers,her leader, to just random strangers. The abundance of these depictions of men try to paint this false image that men are surpressing women throughout history when any good historian would know that it's far more complicated than that, and related to the lack of birth control, the economy, and the types of jobs available, throughout history. Instead of focusing on her being a badass and fighting evil, she is instead fighting "masculine" figures that appear to represent the ficticious patriarchy. The "good men" in the movies are depicted well, however. I give it -2/10 from the total score for these points.

Apart from the injection of radical ideology, I'd say it was an interesting movie that fleshed out areas of the MCU that we all would like to see. Everyone, excluding Brie Larson, stuck to the usual plot points you've come to expect from the MCU. The worlds and space scenes were quite amazing, but the music score was a bit unremarkable. I would say that if the producers lay off the extreme feminist ideology, Captain Marvel's inclusion in the MCU will be quite interesting and positive.

It has a few strong highs mixed throughout but for every great moment it has an equally great stumble or cringe-worthy moment. For instance, while Samuel Jackson has a few great beats in the film the movie also portrays Nick Fury in ways that are inconsistent with the character long established across multiple films in the MCU. The only thing that is consistently fantastic for every moment they're on-screen are the actresses portraying Maria and Monica Rambeau (especially the young actress playing Monica). Ben Mendelson comes close to being great throughout but even he has a minor stumble or two. Long story short, Captain Marvel is a mediocre MCU movie that doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the MCU but isn't it's worst offering either. It belongs more than the solo Hulk outing at the very least. Diehard MCU fans will walk away a little disappointed but probably not hating the film. More casual fans will likely enjoy it a little more but I think only a handful will come away loving it. Expand

Good 90's reference and clever humor (sometimes)
- The action scenes -for the most powerful character of the universe- are insufficient. The fight scenes are bad (except the Talos-Fury fight) and there is no proper final fight. The loss of Fury's eye is disappointing and some jokes are annoying and seems forced

It's not a great CBM but it's good, fun, enjoyable and get us ready for Endgame

Because she is a symbol through her attitude and the fact that her actions spoke louder than words. Gal Gadot had no godlike superpowers, but her inspiring presence and principles transformed her into a feminine tour-de-force. And then comes Brie Larson.

"Captain Marvel" is, more or less, "Wonder Woman" for teenage ladies who feel they should be extra-appreciated simply because they happen to be born with two XX chromosomes. There are scenes of visual beauty, bravado, grandeur, but lacking action. The early scenes when Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) had flashes about her past, linger on for too long as if they are trying to push an idea without any real effort. The last scenes in which she soars through the sky are a delight for the pupil, but again they almost feel like an angry release.

With her feet grounded, Larson is funny and rebellious, at least when she is not annoying and condescending. Happily she is joined by an always natural, free-flowing MF'er by the name of Samuel L. Jackson playing my favorite version of Nick Fury. He is young, as is the world around him. The constant 90's references are great for laughs, if nothing else. I mean, come on, what is cooler than having an important moment in the plot slowed by the imminent loading line of a CRT monitor white PC--hey, where is the file that will reveal my past? Hold on, it's loading.

But while Larson might be a bit toxic, I was surprised by that unexpected twist around the film's middle which I will not spoil here and, for a brief moment, this film went deeper than any Marvel film did, as Carol was struggling with her identity. The way in which the characters in "Dark City" had their memories and identities twisted came into my mind at that point. As expected, though, the film moved on from that path pretty quickly.

This film could have been and should have been the big break for powerful women as it boasted many firsts for the ladies in a Marvel film--not only the first female lead but also the first female to compose the soundtrack. Starting from the music, the girl power anthem is strong here, if only it were women power.

Captain Marvel has the makings of a great MCU movie. All of the expected elements are here. There's the humor, the action, the sentimentality, and the desire to provide non-stop entertainment. The problem? Its hero is kind of boring.

The story is decent, but at no point fleshes Carol Danvers out as anything more than a basic character archetype. It being the protagonist that tries way too hard to come off as tough and cool. We catch glimpses of earlier stages of her life that portray her as a girl that just wants to prove she can be as strong as the boys, but the snippets only last seconds so there's no real journey for her to go through in order achieve that goal. Danvers starts the movie off as a super powerful hero and ends it the same way. So there's no way for her to grow and endear herself to the audience.

Something is also a little off with Brie Larson's performance. She plays this character very, very woodenly. No real emotion seems to come out. Not even in the more energetic sequences. This stiffness is especially a problem every time they try to make Danvers funny. The jokes and one-liners fed to her simply fall flat on their faces. A shame because some of them could have been great had they not been delivered in such an awkward manner.

Larson shines brightly during the action sequences though. Making for a very believable butt kicker when blows start being traded. You can tell she put a lot of work in. Almost as much work as Marvel put into improving their visuals.

The MCU's CGI has been dodgy for a while now. Looking great in some movies and like total crap in others. Captain Marvel can most definitely be counted in the former camp. A good thing too as so much of it is made up of Guardians of the Galaxy style sci-fi scenery.

With its main hero falling short, it's up to the movie's supporting cast to carry the show. Luckily, Samuel Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn prove up to the task. Jackson is just as entertaining as ever and as much the star of the film as Larson herself. Fury stands beside Danvers every step of the way and he develops a few more layers as a result. Mendelsohn is straight up hilarious. I really want to see his character return at some point because he's a laugh riot. I was also caught off guard with how his arc turned out. It's a pretty big twist that changes the course of the movie. Lashana Lynch is good, but her role ends up being a bit of a disappointment as it solely revolves around being Carol's previously established friend from a time we only get brief flashbacks to. Jude Law isn't given much to do, but he's pretty great whenever he's onscreen.

Captain Marvel ultimately ranks among the mid to low-tier MCU flicks, and it's all because they never allowed Danvers to open up to the audience in the same way the other heroes have. It's still very well made movie with plenty of entertaining moments. It just falls short at what is arguably the biggest reason the MCU has been able to keep going for so long; turning previously established superheroes and their properties into something the masses can actually care about.

The formula is still in place but definitely the charm is already beginning to run out.

Captain Marvel doesn't manage to be the monumental film that it thinks it is, especially because it finally has a female lead character and yet despite the scale of the narrative, it never compensates the viewer like it should.

It's true that has more negative points than positive ones but nothing that affects its performance in a significant way.

Significant annotations:

Pros
- A powerful female character that will not be lost among the great male names like Thor, Captain America and Iron Man
- Marvel points to space which is the best place they can go if they want to keep their franchise alive.
-
Cons
- You cannot help feeling this story like a forced introduction to have the character ready for Endgame.
- What they did with the Skrulls has no name. At the same level of what they did with The Mandarin.
- Marvel wasted Ronan again.
- There's no real villain or conflict.

It's not a terrible movie, nor a great movie, it's just a harmless, played-it-safe movie even for a superhero movie.
I had fun watching it a the theater, but that's it.
The main problems with this movie are the poor directing, writing and character development, this felt more like a sequel rather than a Captain Marvel origin story, by that I mean that I learned almost nothing about the character. The directors couldn't sell me the idea that Captain Marvel is the strongest character in the MCU and the one who could beat Thanos as her powers and abilities as shown in this movie are a little generic, bland and boring. The villain is also boring and has no motivation, he's not intimidating or anything, it felt like watching Malekith from Thor 2 or Steppenwolf from Justice League.
As with any movie review I'm gonna highlight the good and bad:

The Good:
-It's a fun superhero movie overall. The scenes with Carol Danvers and Nick Fury are really good and I think the best of the movie.
-There's little to no "Hey look! We have a strong female character that will be an inspiration for all women in the world! We're so progressive!" moments (I don't know the word to sum up that, haha, sorry) as I thought there would be.

The Bad:
-The directing and writing.
-Lack of character development.
-The action scenes were lame. Because probably this directors don't know how to shoot a good action scene. All action scenes are shaky, with tons of cuts and you can barely see what's going on. If the action in a superhero movie is not good, you're doing something wrong.
-Some CGI looked bad, not Black Panther levels of bad but still bad and fake-looking. The Skrulls had a very silly terrible-looking mask.
-Some explanations that fans of the MCU might be trying to seek, like Nick Fury's eye, might be very disappointing.
-Some editing. Like the first 20 minutes of the movie are very confusing because of the bad editing choices.

But still she was introduced. So the fans must assume her story to be something on the same level of the other new characters that were introduced in Phase III, particularly just before Avengers: Endgame. There were Doctor Strange and Black Panther who had their own fun adventures just before Infinity War, which is really needed if the movie wants the audience to actually care about that character when heroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America etc are also present on the same screen. But sadly, Captain Marvel wasn't able to live upto the hype.

I'm in no means saying that this is an absolutely horrible movie. I really liked it, but only as long as the movie was running. Once the movie was over I was like, "Wait, why was I so excited again?". I went to watch the movie as an absolute blank slate. I had heard of Brie Larson giving a controversial statement, but I'm not gonna judge an entire movie over one actress' behaviour. Rather I'd judge it because of the content that was in it. And that's what I'm gonna do.

This movie absolutely nails the 90s vibe. The characters look just as ugly as we used to look in our 90s pictures. The introduction of a young Nick Fury, the plot twist, the Stan Lee cameo, the CGI - I liked it all. But what I didn't like was, well, to put it in simpler words, literally everything else. The acting, music, costumes (when Monica was seeing the different colour combinations she saw all the awesome ones and rejected them, and finally chose the ugliest one), and even the revelation of how Nick Fury got an eyepatch were terrible.

In my opinion this was the worst MCU movie made in the third phase, not just because it lacked content, it didn't even have any important significance. This movie didn't even need to exist, since Captain Marvel just says in Endgame that she was out protecting the other universes. So the whole point of "introducing Captain Marvel" was pointless, as it could have been done just like how Black Widow and Hawkeye were done in The Avengers; give her a cameo in the previous movies and then bring her directly to Endgame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before you dislike this review, remember that I have some really strange opinions lol

Despite lots of people disliking this movie, I found this movie an entertaining film. Of course, it has some setbacks, but I feel that the movie had more good than bad. For example, the movie had a refreshingly good storyline for a MARVEL movie. The characters blended in to the story well, and felt like they all had a purpose.

However, something that I found unpleasant was the alien shape-shifters coming to invade earth. This plot element is a huge cliche that should not be used anymore, as it has become stale.

Another positive about the movie was the acting of the human characters. they seem like they are in a real universe and not in someone's voice cracking fever dream. *cough* blair witch *cough*

I rated mixed and not a positive because the movie has lots of lacking parts, like the action scenes. It seems that MARVEL is focusing more on comedy in some parts than actual action and suspense scenes. The mainstream viewers seem to love the humorous parts, but I saw it as a negative because it does not fit with the original idea of the film, and it made the movie drag on for much longer than it should have. I would not recommend seeing it in theatres, but maybe at home, as the movie is not worth 10 dollars plus popcorn and soda. Just my opinion.

Metacritic is removing newlines for some reason. The MCU now has a Goku. There is a long running joke in Dragonball Z abridged where when a good guy is losing a fight, the villain would mock them by saying "just wait for Goku." By the end of the movie, Captain Marvel is so powerful that absolutely nothing is a threat. Not the main villain, not the orbital bombardment fleet, and not the hundreds of soldiers and warfighters sent against her. The reason she wasn't present in the other movies is explained, but IMO it is a cop-out. When Captain Marvel inevitably wipes the floor with Thanos in end game, the Dragonball Z knockoff saga that is now the MCU will be complete, last minute Goku/Superman syndrome and all. But that's the MCU. How does the movie stand on it's own? My answer: solid 6.5/10. With Captain Marvel being so powerful, the story hook is focused mainly on Captain Marvel's struggle with fabricated memories, as well as a war where the sides don't seem so clear cut. The set up is perfect for a story about an OP character, and the general story beats worked out great. The Effects and choreography were par for the course for MCU movies (good), and the acting was Mostly done well. In terms of the movie itself, I had several issues. The pacing felt off in many of the scenes, with a few weird glaring continuity errors right at the start of the movie. Sometimes the scenes played kind of slow, other times they transitioned before the previous scene could sink in. The acting from the lead, Brie Larson, felt pretty stiff. This seemed to be as much the director and writers' fault as it was the actor though. Captain Marvel is often smug throughout the movie, though she randomly goes from super confident and smiley to super serious throughout both fights and tense moments. I think Disney wanted a hero that is both stoic, and funny, and is in general better than everyone else. The result feels like a fan-fiction insert. As for the acting itself, there was a scene that perfectly exemplified my issues: Maria Rambeau talks with Captain Marvel to fill in some of the holes in Marvel's memory. This is a very emotional scene for both characters and in Rambeau and it clearly shows. However, Captain Marvel (who seemed like she should be just as emotional at the things being revealed to her) twitches a little bit must mostly keeps the same stone face. As for the identity politics: they were present, bot nowhere near the level we see in the recent comics. Expand

I just saw the movie and while it's not horrible, it's definitely not good. What happened to Marvel, they used to have such high standards. I thought most of the supporting cast did a better job holding my attention then Captain Marvel herself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain Marvel is a fun and exciting ride with pretty visuals and excellent performances, and despite it's flaws, managed to be a pretty good movie. Warning for all who haven't seen it, minor spoilers ahead. Anything spoilery will be marked. One of this film's biggest strengths was the talent in front of the screen. The amount of star studded actors giving this film their all is really what made it as good as it is. Samuel L Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury ||(as he makes it very clear in the film, everyone just calls him Fury, despite being called Nick several times by Maria Hill in previous films)|| is excellent as always; Jude Law brings his talent to the table, although what less could be expected of him; and of course Ben Mendelsohn brings that ||villainous charm that we've come to expect from him.|| Brie Larson, whom I had very low expectations of after seeing the trailers, as well as one of her previous movies, actually pleasantly surprised me, bringing life to the character. Clark Gregg reprises his role as fan favorite Phil Coulson, good as usual. And of course, Lashana Lynch provides one of the most charismatic characters to the film in Marie Rambeau out of no where.
As usual, Marvel spares no expense on the visual effects, topping each and every spectacle in the film with an even bigger spectacle in the next scene. At times you don't even notice the CGI, as it blends *so* well into the background. ||Most notably the de-aging CGI they've used on Fury and Coulson works so well that eventually you don't even notice it's there. It just looks *that* natural.||
The story is, while not horrible, it's not fantastic either. It reuses one of the biggest cliches in Hollywood, which I can't speak for everyone but it defintely took me out of the film. Little continuity errors were scattered without ||(such as what I mentioned earlier about Fury and Maria Hill)|| that were rather frustrating but not enough to seriously detract from the experience. The major twist of the film is actually rather large, almost as surprising as the plot twist in Spiderman Homecoming. But here's the thing: while it was surprising, it didn't have that shock value that stuck with me. I didn't walk out of the film still contemplating what I'd just seen like I had with previous Marvel movies that had major plot twists in them (like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Spiderman Homecoming). I'm not saying I wasn't surprised, I'm saying that it just didn't seem like a big deal after the fact. Another issue I have with the film was the cinematography and choreagraphy. Most Marvel films have a certain style to them when it comes to the directing. It's not always easy to pin down... I probably couldn't explain them to you if I tried, but they are undoubtedly there. And for some reason, this movie just didn't seem to have any specific style... as a matter of fact: the cinematography actually was nearly absent, making the movie feel very basic. That's not to say it didn't have it's moments. ||The scene early on when the Skrulls are looking through her memories is very well done, and one of my favorites in the movie.|| But for the most part it was just disappointing. In the same way, most of the fight scenes in the movie were very poor, primarily ||the climax||. It was so dark in the room where they were fighting, and, again, the cinematography made it very difficult to see what was happening. Again, that's not to say it didn't have it's moments. ||The scene at the beginning when Carol is trying to escape the Skrull ship with the cuffs on her hands is particularly fun||, but for the most part it is very disappointing.
Despite all this, it managed to maintain to hold my attention throughout and to have a comprehensible plot that flowed quite nicely. While I wouldn't give it a top spot amongst the big contenders of the MCU, I do think it's earned its place as one of the better films in the now 21 film franchise.

And by controversial, what I mean is it made a bunch of nerdbro jackasses on the internet mad for some reason. I don’t know, some **** about Brie Larson hating white men or something, even though she literally has nothing to do with the writing or production of the movie? I don’t get it. Anyway, how is it? It’s fine! It’s like every single other middle-of-the-road Marvel solo movie ever made. It takes no risks. It’s safe, unchallenging popcorn entertainment. There are one or two things I thought this movie did really well, the de-ageing effects are fantastic, the ‘90s setting was fun and I kinda liked the Star Wars-ish vibe it had at times, but other than that this is just a serviceable, cookie-cutter, nothing-special-about-it superhero movie. How are the characters? They’re fine. The story? It’s fine. The action? It’s fine. The effects? They’re fine. The acting? It’s fine. The music? It’s fine. The comedy? It’s fine. The connections with the other movies? They’re fine. It’s fine. It’s not as good as Guardians of the Galaxy, but it’s not as bad as Ant-Man and The Wasp. It’s okay. There were some kinda bad moments, the writing and social commentary is extremely obvious and on-the-nose and there is an absolutely baffling music choice in one of the final battles that I feel is trying to be like an Edgar Wright movie or GotG but it just sticks out like a sore thumb, but that’s about it as far as actual issues I have with it. There just isn’t a lot about it that I think is especially good either. I know this movie means a lot to a lot of people and I think that’s great. I don’t really agree, Wonder Woman did it first and did it better, but I’m glad it did so well financially. Hopefully we’ll get bigger and better movies like this out of it. If you haven’t seen it already, check it out if you like Marvel movies, skip it if you’re like me and you don’t really care. Expand

"Space invasion, big car chase... truth be told, I was ready to hang it up. 'Till I met you today."

One year later - nobody's talking about this, expect for me right now. All that fuss and name calling over an average by the book superhero movie.

One of the blandest and most forgettable movies of last year, which I just remembered to login as watched.

Brie Larson, who has proven in the past to be a talented actress with amazing range, but is unfortunately the weakest link in the movie. I thought her performance was incredibly wooden and the least interesting part of the movie. Her line delivery felt really off and there wasn't anything there for me to care about her character. All backstory with very little depth. It might have just been the poor material she was given to work with.

I'm sorry, but not once did I believe this is the strongest character in the MCU. The issue is that the movie does a terrible job of actually showing us that she is powerful and important. They tell us rather than show us. Like OK, she shoots lasers, flies around and has some magical glow around her. Am I suppose to be impressed?

The story itself is really messy and unfocused. It's trying so hard to be an origin story while also setting up the next installment for future movies, but also having a Bourne element into the mix of connecting pieces to the past.

Also I can't believe they did Lee Pace dirty. Not just once, but twice now!

However, there are some things I liked in the movie that stopped it from being the worst thing ever. I love the tribute to Stan Lee on the Marvel Studios opening intro, which was such a loving touch to his legacy.

The de-aging on Samuel L. Jackson was fantastic and shows us how far technology has come. Although towards the end the effects started to look a bit wonky for some reason. Jackson himself was charismatic and a blast to watch. It was interesting to see a younger and goofy version of Nick Fury before he gets super serious.

I love Goose the Cat, just don't let her anywhere near your eyes.

The Skrulls were enjoyable "villains" and Ben Mendelsohn absolutely shines as one of the Skrulls.

And that's really it for positives.

Overall rating: "Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't." - Margaret Thatcher

Yes, I actually took a quote from Thatcher. I honestly should just delete my account right now.

Captain Marvel is an important movie for the future of the MCU, and it's good despite its flaws. Trust me, the surrounding online negativity about ultra-feminism in this movie is unfounded.

Captain Marvel defeats both men and women in combat, but there is no political undertone (unless you count one instance of the song "Just A Girl" playing in the background during a fight as being SJW propaganda). It's just a movie showing that women can be heroes, too. If Bruce Banner can get super-powers due to a gamma ray accident and become The Hulk, so can Carol Danvers become a cosmic superhero due to an explosion. No one has ever complained about strong female characters such as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider movies or Ellen Ripley in the Alien film series, so complaints about Captain Marvel being feminist are ridiculous. There is not a single scene where Carol Danvers declares men as being inferior to women, or anything like it.

The movie is a prequel set in 1995, where Nick Fury and Phil Coulson are still low-level SHIELD agents. Captain Marvel is already powerful and has to re-discover her past, while she's caught in the Kree-Skrull war. The plot is good enough, with twists and turns, but they left a few threads hanging for a potential sequel. For those complaining that Marvel didn't set up the Secret Invasion with the Skrulls, yes it would have been cool to see that, but fans should know that Marvel won't adapt classic stories anymore but they'll try to tell original stories with the characters in order to surprise fans.

I could list various minor issues I have with the film but my only major criticism is the star of the movie, Brie Larson. She's not bad, but she's mostly emotionless. Even when Carol Danvers discovers the truth about her past, and when she discovers an all-new power, she hardly expresses any emotion. Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, for instance, screamed with joy when he flew for the 1st time in his Iron Man suit. But the problem may be due to Captain Marvel's cosmic powers, which render her ridiculously super-powerful and un-beatable.

The movie has a soundtrack with a selection of some cool 1990s songs, but the Gaurdians of the Galaxy films did a much better job in this regard.

Captain Marvel is a nice addition to the MCU but its plot doesn't really add something noteworthy. The Wonder Woman film did a much better job in establishing female-led superhero movies.

Last but not least, Captain Marvel is the 1st MCU movie after the passing of Stan Lee, and it starts with the Marvel intro sequence showcasing past Stan Lee cameos! I almost cried when watching this tribute.

score is forgettable and felt a bit rushed towards the end.
Bre Larson does a decent job portraying the head strong, cocky and at times witty. performance as a whole could have been better but I loved the chemestry between her and Samuel l Jackson. and are some of my favorite parts.
The supporting cast was amazing Samuel Jackson, Lashana Lynch, Ben Mendobah. Fight scenes were creative and suspenseful though at times funny.
space battles looked great and the CGI looked fine.
The story was nothing new but done well
I'm glad they avoided certain cliches that most moves do today for example in wonder woman Gal Gado walk around like and idiot even trying on dresses for like a half hour but here the main character lands and immediately acts like the soldier she is and wants to communicate with HQ and continue her mission.
One of the first scenes in the movie which involves Carols memories shows a clever way to show us some back story of the character while showing us what kind of person she is while also progressing the story.
Is this the greatest hero movie?
not at all, but it's a good movie and I recommend watching it if your a fan of the MCU.
If your not you could still get some enjoyment out of the film from the humor and action pieces alone.
and I am giving this movie a 6/10

Well, I just plain don't like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

I was looking forwards to seeing Captain Marvel join the MCU. But Larson just does not pull it off, she has the same presence, energy and charisma as you might find in a pile of soggy carboard.

There are definitely some great moments with Nick Fury (I am not saying I want a Nick Fury solo movie, please, don't make that a thing) and I really enjoyed some of the moments with the Skrull played by Ben Mendelsohn, but on the whole I found the movie to be a bit lackluster. Certainly not the weakest movie in Marvels line-ups (Thor 2 and Captain America 1 have that privilege) but it just generally wasn't on par with what you expect from Marvel after they have had over a decade to perfect the formula.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If we compare ''Captain Marvel'' with others superheroes movies, we can conclude that ''Captain Marvel'' is the worst character story, all Marvel superheroes movies show the early life of superhero at the beginning, and then how he/she obtains the superpower as a forward story, but ''Captain Marvel'' started backwardly, at the beginning she already has a superpower, but she doesn't remember anything about how she got it, until the end when she finds out how she obtained it. I think the writers made a different a style of superhero movie to surprise the audience with some twist in the story, but they failed because it was a bad twist and no one surprised or impressed, they could make a wonderful, emotional and enjoyable movie if they just make it forward and clear (showing her early life, not as a flashback, until she becomes a "Captain Marvel'').

I read a lot of negative reviews, and I think most audiences hated ''Captain Marvel'' due to many factors:
1- Less action than other Marvel movies.
2- Released after the masterpiece ''Avengers: infinite war'', so all marvel audience were expecting same or more from ''Captain Marvel.''
3- Her power wasn't special, it's almost like '''Superman.''
4- Lack of humor.
5- Not following straight forward story as same as other superhero movies.

Finally, ''Captain Marvel' is just a TV movie, not good and not bad, if you are one of marvel audience you will not like it, but if you just want to watch a superhero movie maybe you will enjoy a little.
