The film has great direction, good acting and finally a great film about the biography of one of the Hollywood stars, Marilyn Monroe.

The main problem of the film is the ending and finally the script, where the real principles of Monroe's life are not observed. This negligence on the part of the director and screenwriter was unlikely and caused an irreparable blow to the film, which was partially corrected by the excellent direction.
Finally, the conclusion that can be drawn from this movie is that the movie has a great direction and Armas' performance is admirable, which makes you enjoy a fascinating movie about the former movie star.… Expand

If Baz Luhrmann directed a Marilyn Monroe biopic, this is what it would look at. The film is nonsense and all over the place, supporting characters are cartoons, and the lead performance holds it all together. This film is the victim of inaccurate expectations. A lot of very basic people with mainstream tastes are clicking on it because it's ostensibly about Marilyn Monroe and then leaving low IQ reviews. Most of the criticisms of this film are attacking it for failing to be what it never was: a realistic biopic. It's called 'Blonde', not 'The Marilyn Monroe Story'. It's not meant to be a traditional fleshed-out biography, so steer clear if that's what you're looking for. It is the (often nightmarish) subjective experience of someone who, despite achieving the apex of fame and public adoration, committed suicide after a life of trauma. The film seeks the reasons for that; so yes, it's dark and intense--as it should be. Anyone who's been an addict or suffered mental illness will probably relate. Great performances and gorgeously dreamlike cinematography create precise tones and moods. It's obnoxious to see all the reviewers calling the film exploitative for putting Ana de Armas' body on display--the real Monroe was unashamed of her body and frequently nude in her public and private life so it's hardly gratuitous to depict that important reality of her personality. In an interview she said "we are all born sexual creatures, thank God. It's a pity so many people despise and crush this natural gift." Maybe because it's rated NC-17, people are expecting an erotic thriller, but anyone just watching this for cheap titillation will click off after 10 minutes. If you don't have the mental fortitude for a 3 hour art film, go choose from the wide array of generic Hollywood product that's out there for you.… Expand

THE GOOD: What a performance by Ana de Armas! Definitely the best of 2022 (as today). I loved Dominik's maximalist style. So extreme, violent and hard to watch. Totally get why some could hate it.

Not so much a film about Marilyn Monroe, rather a dark AF exploration of the female experience using Norma Jean's life as a template. And as with Dominik's previous masterpiece 'Killing Them Softly' an excoriation of the American Dream. ToNot so much a film about Marilyn Monroe, rather a dark AF exploration of the female experience using Norma Jean's life as a template. And as with Dominik's previous masterpiece 'Killing Them Softly' an excoriation of the American Dream. To embody the dreams of others can be a waking nightmare. Ana de Armas dazzles in an emotionally devastating performance. Too long? Maybe. It's exhausting. But this isn't Top Gun (thank Jeebus). What a sad cultural moment when critics and audiences turn their back on real cinema in favour of jingoistic bullsh*t and juvenile fantasies. In a way we are collectively caught in puerile dream just like Marilyn in the 50s. Wake the f*ck up.… Expand

Another masterwork by master filmmaker Andrew Dominik. I can see why Netflix didn't want to release it because it's not spoonfed garbage for infants. I'm not sure what movie others watched for it to get this rating? I watch a lot of movies, all genres, but don't review often. Perhaps this was all a bit uncomfortable for some? Fans who hold Marilyn Monroe as some Hollywood deity aren't going to like this story. Not that she's the villain, but that she was such a damaged victim. Ana de Armas is very good in this. have seen in 2022 so far. The film is a masterpiece and Andrew Dominiks magnum opus. It has a beautiful original score by Nick Cave and strong performances from the entire cast. It is a harrowing film with a tragic and poetic mystical aura.

The book Blonde was written by a woman named Joyce Carol Oates and is viewed as historical fiction. It was nominated for several awards including a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The movie Blonde is a masterful piece of art that mirrors the novel faithfully but with an avant garde sort of approach. Showing a person's or character's pain is NOT exploiting or **** or victimizing them. I find this malicious spin against the film ludicrous and abusive in itself. The male gaze spin is beyond stupid considering the film is compassionate towards Monroe and an indictment against the men who mistreated her. Marilyn is depicted as a glorious, talented, and beautiful figure marred by mental health issues and abuse. That was her reality and Marilyn Monroe in real life, described herself as miserable. It is a pathway to call out the toxicity that existed in Hollywood. Marilyn Monroe is viewed as a feminist empowerment icon in this edgy and provocative seminal film.… Expand

Imagine, if you will, a dreamy David Lynch movie. It comes off like Lynch channeling Roman Polanski's Repulsion. Say what you will about the film's structure (the opening 17 minutes could have been edited down, for instance), but Armas deserves an Oscar for her vulnerable performance. She is truly a candle in the wind. There's not a single scene in this movie where she's not spectacular. I'm giving this film a 10 for her performance.… Expand

It appears the critics have trashed the movie because they desire to see the fake and happy vision of Norma Jean portrayed in the movies. Perhaps, a true reflection deep into the mind of Norma Jean would find society disliking of the dark abyss that recedes deep into the mind of a woman tormented by mental illness. I would challenge detractors to explain what would make this movie so bad? Is it because of bad acting? The answer would be no. Even the harshest critics would say it is not a bad acted movie. Is it because of story? Well, I suppose a story that is bad would be hard to understand or boring to watch. None of this is true of ‘Blonde’. What we are left with then (from detractors) is a movie that is well acted, well produced, with a captivating and gripping story. What makes it "bad" is the never ending saga of torment and sadness. What critics hate about this movie is not how the movie is "made" but the unrelenting mind behind it… the mind of a women who was so tortured by her experiences that she took her own life. The critics could not stomach three hours of this saga… but just imagine Norma Jean living it every day of her entire life.… Expand

By no means a perfect film -- falling somewhere between Dominik's stellar The Assassination of Jessie James..., and the overly-sombre Killing Them Softly -- Blonde packs more ambition, and singularly fascinating moments, into its run timeBy no means a perfect film -- falling somewhere between Dominik's stellar The Assassination of Jessie James..., and the overly-sombre Killing Them Softly -- Blonde packs more ambition, and singularly fascinating moments, into its run time than ten other movies combined. Blonde is, as with most of Dominik's efforts, unsurprisingly divisive, given that it implicates both the media, and us -- the audience -- in Monroe's unraveling and demise. (A more apt title might have been "The Male Gaze: The Movie.") Further, Blonde barely bothers situating its events in anything resembling a comprehensible order (besides being basically chronological), or segueing between periods and events in Monroe's life (as any self-respecting biopic would), or providing proper introductions to new characters, much less bidding farewell to departing ones. In short, Dominik doesn't hold anyone's hand. F**k hand holding. The overall effect, then, is a mesmerizing fever dream; as devastating as a sudden death. While in no way to everyone's taste -- more likely not to most viewers' taste -- Blonde deserves an audience. A patient and attentive and curious audience. And de Armas should win all the awards.… Expand

I watched Blonde last night. I was impressed by it, especially the incredible cinematography and the non-traditional way of telling a story, or better say portraying a character’s feelings in an unconventional way. I was impressed by it, especially the incredible cinematography and the non-traditional way of telling a story, or better say portraying a character’s feelings in an unconventional way. It reminded me so much of Spencer, in sense that it’s less of a biography and more of a psychological thriller filmed from the perspective of Marilyn herself to portray what it felt like to be her.

What I didn’t like was how it made some weird jumps in time without much explanation or details as to how she got to that point, how she met said person and why things went the way they did, not to mention how some things are almost completely made up. However, thinking about it as a movie from the perspective of a mentally troubled and traumatized person suffering under the exploitation of the spotlight makes me forgive the lack of authenticity in its storytelling. it’s like she’s on a train through some kind of an apocalypse and she can’t even make sense of things as they happen and all she remembers is the feelings, not the actual events or the people.

It’s not a biopic, its not a story of Marilyn Monroe’s factual life events, it’s an art house psychological thriller/horror about Hollywood and the way it creates celebrities, and proceeds to market, exploit and dismantle them in the most horrific way, as seen through the eyes of one of the most beautiful, most popular, most misunderstood and most traumatized celebrities in the world.… Expand

Very much so this movie is disturbing and uncomfortable to watch at times. Being said I haven't seen a movie this bold in a long time. The cinematography is fantastic with art as the main goal. The acting is suburb especially ana de armas. Words like stunning and brave don't mean anything anymore but she literally laid herself bare for all to see. This movie intentionally makes u feel. It's more a high 8 low 9 outta 10 but just for the sheer courage to make a movie like this in 2022. lifts it. A must see for any who want to c what true film can do to u emotionally. This was an exercise in unabashed unapologetic film making excellence.… Expand

Blonde. I don't want to be Marilyn Monroe. Unfortunately, I have never been familiar with the biography of Norma Jeane, because this film slightly opened this very biography. Why a little? Because then, as I found out, "Blonde" from Andrew Dominik is more of a feature film and the biography in it is very superficial, which is why it probably received so much negativity from fans of Marilyn Monroe and some other personalities encountered throughout the tape. The main and biggest plus of this picture is Ana de Armas, who perfectly coped with her role and showed Norma from all sides.

From one "biopic" to another. Both icons of our past, and both treated as commodities for our consumption. I've a feeling this movie will be studied for a while, if only people can get past the disturbing, sensationalized content first. It also begs to question, are there stories that shouldn't be told. How much is too much and would the focus of such stories approve of their story being told in such a manner if they were still alive? Ana de Armas is mesmorizing in the role, and brings a depth to the character of Marilyn that shows a woman acting as another woman. Truly a beautiful film, and director Andrew Dominik creates something truly captivating and haunting, but is it true? And is hiding behind source material that labels the work as fiction, good enough? That's hard to say.… Expand

This movie is not as bad as everyone says, the problem with it is that this is made for people who are familiar with Marilyn Monroe, her career, her movies, her lovers, her scandals, her background, and even her rumors.

The movie doesn't present a story for the audience to learn and get to know more about Marilyn, it's more like a visualization that paints the right picture with the right mood for fans and people that are already familiar with everything that happens in this movie. Characters are not introduced, and sometimes they don't even mention who they are, like Joe Dimaggio. You're supposed to already know, identify, and anticipate what will unfold.

I am not that big into Marilyn as many people are. I've seen a few of her movies and knew a thing or two about her. The rest I just figured out or got the picture. A couple of times I did stop the movie to google something.

I watched this movie because I like Andrew Dominik. I think he's a great director, and he did a great job here. The movie is just too long, but for that I blame streaming services who demand movies be 3 hours long.

So in conclusion, if you're a Marilyn Monroe obsessive, I'm sure you already watched this and loved it. If you don't even know her real name was Norma Jean, stay away.… Expand
