Excellent acting, but overdoes the painful moment’s in Marilyn’s life in a 3 hour movie badly in need of editing. Do we really need to see JFK porn, forceps abortions and vomiting to the camera to get the point across? I’d suggest no.

She not only performs the tough depressing role of playing Marilyn Monroe, but she embodies her. You almost start to believe that you are watching Marilyn herself. The movie, however, is a downer. The pacing is off. Plus, we really don't see how and why Marilyn became a such big star. I wouldn't watch it again. Expand

Pretty bleak, I get the message but its delivery was very brutal and cruel. I know nothing of the historical facts at play here. Ana did will but that movie was so shallow.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ana De Armas nailed this role. She completely transformed into Marilyn. She embodies everything from her look, to her voice, to the way she moves. She deserves an Oscar for her performance. For those that don’t like the direction, it came from Marilyn’s own memoirs. Unless someone that was actually there disagrees this story could be spot on. Ana De Armas stars as Marilyn Monroe in this biopic that serves as a fictionalized account of her troubled life based off a book by Joyce Carol Oates. The film almost immediately generated controversy over this due to the fact that the novelAna De Armas stars as Marilyn Monroe in this biopic that serves as a fictionalized account of her troubled life based off a book by Joyce Carol Oates. The film almost immediately generated controversy over this due to the fact that the novel infamously exploited and dehumanized Monroe through graphic and explicit sexual depictions of her. So it came as no surprise that this film received a rare and rather hardcore NC-17 rating, depicting everything ranging from smutty and objectifying sex scenes to implied rape and domestic abuse. While De Armas gives it her all, her rather obvious Cuban roots squeak in all too often through her accent throughout the film, try as she did to hide it. And while the film started out intriguing enough, with frequently changing aspect ratios and switching back and forth between black and white and color sequences, this quickly became a gimmicky and stylized crutch that the film fell back on all too often in order to overcompensate for its abstract narrative style. Overall, De Armas shines as bright as she can with what material she is given, but the film's downer mood and tone, rough and misogynistic handling of Monroe, an unearned rather lengthy runtime, and overuse of aspect ratio switch-ups and black and white/color sequences make this a thoroughly uneven and scattershot misfire of a film. But the script? That's where Blonde falls down. And when we're talking about a movie that's almost 3 hours long, the myth and the beauty of your production won't be enough to make it, and Blonde sadly proves it.

And as mentioned, the myth that Norma Jean has become since her death gets a different exploration here, but I'm not so sure that does her justice. After all, the examination and exploitation of her life and career has yielded so much material that it's now unclear where it begins and where it ends.

Ana de Armas delivers the performance of her life and I really have nothing to reproach her for, but in the end for me Blonde is a film that covers too much and doesn't really say anything that matters.

Much has been made about the facts vs. the fantasies in this musing on the life and career of Marilyn Monroe (from the novel by Joyce Carol Oates). Like last year's Spencer, which was a fantasy on Princess Diana (my review), writer/directorMuch has been made about the facts vs. the fantasies in this musing on the life and career of Marilyn Monroe (from the novel by Joyce Carol Oates). Like last year's Spencer, which was a fantasy on Princess Diana (my review), writer/director Andrew Dominik creates elaborate scenarios around Monroe's multiple tragedies (some verified and others not). Several of her iconic moments are skillfully staged, while others are ignored. Usually, every scene plays too long and intense, losing potential for emotional power. Ana de Arnas captures the star's vulnerability and pain with depth, while beautifully embodying Monroe's style. Dominik's direction takes advantage of her skill, spending almost every moment of every scene focused on her. This is a relentless tragedy with minimal bright spots that boils down to an artistic exercise more than an absorbing biopic. Expand

Featuring multiple fictionalised scenes including forced sexual acts, violence, drug induced phsychosis, emotional trauma and mental breakdowns. It's unclear to me how much of the story is based on the real Marilyn Monroe. The cast are talented and there are some interesting ments of cinematography and soundscapes. Overall it lacked a certain cohesiveness and holds a mostly voyeuristic horror like 'fly on the wall' feeling where we are instead trapped with the titular blonde as she experiences scene after scene of something new and painful. A pretty depressing watch! Expand

I would not classify the style chosen by Dominik as dreamlike, expressionistic or surrealist: he identified with his protagonist and decided to tell her in subjective. But who would she be? One who would have lived traumatically inelaborable childhood experiences: she could be an ordinary woman or any person, instead a diva was selected showing her split between Norma Jeane's soul and Marylin's body, from which the synthesis "Blonde". To clarify such a simple concept, the time of a medium-length film would have been enough, while the director wanted to empathetically follow his victim in a 2 hours and 46 minutes long repetition compulsion. By purging the marathon from the cloudburst of crying scenes, one would have fall within the proper lìmits of duration. Then: havin' never felt interest in the phenomenon of stardom, I am unable to judge whether there is also a complaint towards the star-system: I hope not, since Dominik's operation has as its only sure effect to launch de Armas in the empyrean of the planetary divism. Finally: if at the Venice Film Festival the film was applauded 14 minutes, evidently there are those who can afford the aesthetic care to repair such a skinning of the hands.

One aspect that was spot on, was the depiction of white men in positions of power and authority doing whatever they felt like with only what is in it for me mentality. So true, especially in todays world with a certain fat, fake blond, lying ex-president leading the way for all his warped, dumber than a mud fence followers. That's for all you goofs who scream and hollar about BLM, sjw, and everything else you describe as woke. Never mind their party of choice tried to overthrow our democracy and continues to do so.CKgamer, I'm looking at you. On the one hand, it's got an unbelievable performance by Ana De Armas, immaculate cinematography, strong visual aesthetics, and a wonderful score. On the other hand, the film's theme's are tone-deaf, the dialogue shotty and cliched, and the direction overall messy and incoherent. Upon seeing the strong hate for the film, I was determined to give it its fair chance. After the film finished, I realized why the reaction has been so strong. For those that felt the film was offensive and vile, I can certainly see that point of view. For those that found the film artistically brave, bold, and creative, I can certainly see that point of view as well. Both reactions truly represent the best and worst parts about the film which is why I say it's the epitome of a "mixed-bag". Expand
