Oh my god, what a film.
I would love to see a movie about Brad Pitt in a few years, which includes his loves, marriages, addictions, violence and that everything is exaggerated and many things invented, that is not biographical but many people believe it is, i think Mr. Pitt would be very happy that millions of people will able to see that movie, or better, if he died he would not be able to see it, he would not be able to give an opinion, but quiet, they will go to Mr. Pitt´s grave and ask his permission, lol. I think Mr. Pitt will love it because this is exactly what he did by producing this movie; humiliating, violent, offending a woman who doesn't deserve it, it's disgusting what they have done and everyone should be ashamed, keep using the image and name of a woman who died so many years ago to rape her on screen, literal.
Shame on everyone involved, including Ms. De Armas, who posted on her instagram that she couldn't wait to celebrate Marilyn this year, celebrate? You didn´t do it for her, liar, you did it for your career, you should be honest, you are dying for that oscar nomination, and finally shame on netflix for help to create and promoting this, for disgusting money. Those who see the movie will need to bath after, some because of disgust and others because they enjoyed that porn.
The next time this director wants to film porn, do not use the name of a person who wanted to be remembered beyond her beauty and charm, also for her intelligence and talent. I have so many more things to say aaaaaaahhhhh
I hope Marilyn can rest, one day…
P.s. I should have known the movie was really bad and so disgusting when Casey Affleck said it was incredible.

The film chooses to focus exclusively on Monroe's continuous suffering and exploitation by every person she was surrounded by, which makes the film feel smut-like, monotonous, and, ironically, exploitative itself. It reduces Monroe down to an abused sex symbol with daddy issues, rather than an actual human with character and depth beyond that. Additionally, with this harrowing subject matter in mind, Blonde is disgustingly long and should've had over an hour of its runtime cut, as scenes feel overly repetitive and there is not remotely enough depth to justify the length. Lastly, combined with the aforementioned is the pretension in the direction and writing. The film's entire style is distracting and attention-seeking, using certain visuals (which on their own are beautiful) over and over again, while not justifying their continuous presence enough. Ana De Armas gives a great performance as Marilyn and is a saving grace at times, but ironically the entire film feels like it's just abusing her for her beauty and body, rather than her acting ability, which I know from Blade Runner 2049 and Knives Out can be amazing on its own. In the end, Blonde is a miserable, interminable, and honestly regressive film that only a sick sadist would find entertaining, empowering, or impactful. Do not waste your time with it. Expand

Somehow, In a 2 hr and 40 min film they manage to demean, objectify, and dehumanize Monroe without giving her an ounce of personality besides “traumatized.” It is wildly offensive to her actual person who was far more clever than the film gives her credit for. They portray all of her genius acting as luck and go so far as to poke fun at her desire to become a serious actress without ever allowing the audience to witness times that she WAS a fantastic actress. For those who have only seen Monroe as an icon, this film will simply push her further into that role- except now she gets tragic victimhood attached. The film is severely uncomfortable to watch and yet not the least bit interesting or thought provoking. There is no nuance about her life and experiences, simply putting her private world on display without even an attempt to portray her as a person outside of her trauma. Overall it is incredibly offensive, and any overarching critique on the men in her life that the director intended has simply turned right around onto him. Someone else should’ve made this film, because it is blatantly obvious that he only sees her as the sex icon himself. Expand

Due to the excitement I had (especially to see Ana De Armas' take on the iconic character), I decided to still see it. Blonde is a near 3 hours of hogwash, and I'm baffled how that script was approved by a production company. Andrew Dominik's exploitative and disjointed take on Marilyn Monroe shouldn't exist.

Ana De Armas' brilliant acting does nothing to save the trashy script (fictional or not) she brought to life.

The director, scriptwriter and cinematographer should be whipped the number of times Ana De Armas mentioned 'Daddy'.

The film has great direction, good acting and finally a great film about the biography of one of the Hollywood stars, Marilyn Monroe.
The main problem of the film is the ending and finally the script, where the real principles of Monroe's life are not observed. This negligence on the part of the director and screenwriter was unlikely and caused an irreparable blow to the film, which was partially corrected by the excellent direction.
Finally, the conclusion that can be drawn from this movie is that the movie has a great direction and Armas' performance is admirable, which makes you enjoy a fascinating movie about the former movie star.

Marilyn and Norma was cunningly coy, highly intelligent, well read, studious entertainer, tenacious entrepreneur, a natural empathic comedian with impeccable timing and wit. At some point, the dumb blonde trope must stop; we are now an educated audience who are very aware of Marilyn Monroe’s zone of genius! In an era of feminine oppression and economic classism, Marilyn climbed out of the complexities of the impoverished orphanage to strategically reinvent herself in a man’s world as an Aphrodite, inherently birthing an evolution in pop culture for women throughout the 70s and decades to come, and yet over half a century later, we are still being subjected to this archetype gaslit pornographic misogynistic depiction of Monroe. I was too bored to finish the movie; it’s way too long. I am not going to spend almost three hours of my time watching someone being exploited. The fame machine chews people up and spits out a lugie. It’s a story that has been repeated over and over and over and we keep letting it happen e.g. Britney. Norma Jean's life was tragic and this film is nothing but a traffic jam while people rubberneck at a horrific accident. Sadly, I’m certain there are currently young stars being directed towards the same fate because the fame machine must consume flesh and soul. This movie is a reminder that humans can be despicable. It's clear that Andrew Dominik tried to make a film about how the cult of personality and the tyrannical Hollywood patriarchy ripped Marilyn apart, but 'Blonde' mistakenly fights exploitation with a deplorable and erratic tale that doesn't bother to explore another dimension of the character other than her suffering and humiliation. Ana de Armas is fine, but his performance is borderline overacting, although this is Dominik's fault. It's easy to feel sorry for a character when shown being punched, raped, destroyed, and insulted from the first scenes to the last, but what's the point? There are no conventionalisms here; I give Dominik that, but his artistic pursuit has trampled all over the memory of not a movie star but a woman, and that is unforgivable to me. Expand

Norma Jean could do no wrong in this narrative, simply a victim of her circumstances. That's not how reality works and the "artistic merit" comes across as emotionally stunted hubris and an obsession to tell their own version of the narrative, not Norma Jean's.

De Armas does look the part and acts her heart out, but her accent is very noticeable throughout the film, especially during emotional scenes. This isn't a knock against her, but rather an example of the pieces that don't fit together. And finally the elephant in the room: It's despicable to manufacture a controversial NC-17 rating to get people to watch the film. That is exactly what happened here. Money holding executives saw that this was a 2.75+ hour turd with nothing of substance to say, so they sold sexualization. This film's marketing has the very exploitative nature it attempted to shed a light upon. In the end, Blonde didn't get very many parts right and the message and rewrites simply muddy the waters of history, not make it clearer.

A lot of very basic people with mainstream tastes are clicking on it because it's ostensibly about Marilyn Monroe and then leaving low IQ reviews. Most of the criticisms of this film are attacking it for failing to be what it never was: a realistic biopic. It's called 'Blonde', not 'The Marilyn Monroe Story'. It's not meant to be a traditional fleshed-out biography, so steer clear if that's what you're looking for. It is the (often nightmarish) subjective experience of someone who, despite achieving the apex of fame and public adoration, committed suicide after a life of trauma. The film seeks the reasons for that; so yes, it's dark and intense--as it should be. Anyone who's been an addict or suffered mental illness will probably relate. Great performances and gorgeously dreamlike cinematography create precise tones and moods. It's obnoxious to see all the reviewers calling the film exploitative for putting Ana de Armas' body on display--the real Monroe was unashamed of her body and frequently nude in her public and private life so it's hardly gratuitous to depict that important reality of her personality. In an interview she said "we are all born sexual creatures, thank God. It's a pity so many people despise and crush this natural gift." Maybe because it's rated NC-17, people are expecting an erotic thriller, but anyone just watching this for cheap titillation will click off after 10 minutes. If you don't have the mental fortitude for a 3 hour art film, go choose from the wide array of generic Hollywood product that's out there for you. Expand

Show what made them so talented and great while showing the positive/negative things that occurred in their life. Biopics are never completely truthful and do a fair amount of dramatization but a lot of the main beats have to be truthful. The most important of all is to be respectful to the person they are telling a story of as they are or were a real individual.

Blonde does none of that. It has no heart or soul and instead is just 2 hours 46 minutes of exhausting trauma, porn and dullness. The film acts like an artsy film but it just feels very pretentious and insulting to all the real people and the audience. The director doesn't seem to be interested in her actual life but in the terrible rumours surrounding Monroe instead. The director then turned these rumours into a long soft porn film. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ana De Armas nailed this role. She completely transformed into Marilyn. She embodies everything from her look, to her voice, to the way she moves. She deserves an Oscar for her performance. For those that don’t like the direction, it came from Marilyn’s own memoirs. Unless someone that was actually there disagrees this story could be spot on. That the director had the budget for all the film-school hocus pocus and could attract fine actors underscores what a debacle this film is, and a squandering of talent. Blonde is clearly dealing with review bombing and a bias. Ana de Armas deserves an Oscar nomination for her gripping, soulful, raw, mesmerizing, and beautiful portrayal of Marilyn
Monroe. It is the best performance I
have seen in 2022 so far. The film is a masterpiece and Andrew Dominiks magnum opus. It has a beautiful original score by Nick Cave and strong performances from the entire cast. It is a harrowing film with a tragic and poetic mystical aura.

The book Blonde was written by a woman named Joyce Carol Oates and is viewed as historical fiction. It was nominated for several awards including a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The movie Blonde is a masterful piece of art that mirrors the novel faithfully but with an avant garde sort of approach. Showing a person's or character's pain is NOT exploiting or **** or victimizing them. I find this malicious spin against the film ludicrous and abusive in itself. The male gaze spin is beyond stupid considering the film is compassionate towards Monroe and an indictment against the men who mistreated her. Marilyn is depicted as a glorious, talented, and beautiful figure marred by mental health issues and abuse. That was her reality and Marilyn Monroe in real life, described herself as miserable. It is a pathway to call out the toxicity that existed in Hollywood. Marilyn Monroe is viewed as a feminist empowerment icon in this edgy and provocative seminal film.

Imagine, if you will, a dreamy David Lynch movie. It comes off like Lynch channeling Roman Polanski's Repulsion. Say what you will about the film's structure (the opening 17 minutes could have been edited down, for instance), but Armas deserves an Oscar for her vulnerable performance. She is truly a candle in the wind. There's not a single scene in this movie where she's not spectacular. I'm giving this film a 10 for her performance. Expand

The incendiary reactions to the movie is at odds with its number 1 viewership on Netflix and its nearly 60% audience rating on google. It appears the critics have trashed the movie because they desire to see the fake and happy vision of Norma Jean portrayed in the movies. Perhaps, a true reflection deep into the mind of Norma Jean would find society disliking of the dark abyss that recedes deep into the mind of a woman tormented by mental illness. I would challenge detractors to explain what would make this movie so bad? Is it because of bad acting? The answer would be no. Even the harshest critics would say it is not a bad acted movie. Is it because of story? Well, I suppose a story that is bad would be hard to understand or boring to watch. None of this is true of ‘Blonde’. What we are left with then (from detractors) is a movie that is well acted, well produced, with a captivating and gripping story. What makes it "bad" is the never ending saga of torment and sadness. What critics hate about this movie is not how the movie is "made" but the unrelenting mind behind it… the mind of a women who was so tortured by her experiences that she took her own life. The critics could not stomach three hours of this saga… but just imagine Norma Jean living it every day of her entire life. Expand

The film almost immediately generated controversy over this due to the fact that the novel infamously exploited and dehumanized Monroe through graphic and explicit sexual depictions of her. So it came as no surprise that this film received a rare and rather hardcore NC-17 rating, depicting everything ranging from smutty and objectifying sex scenes to implied rape and domestic abuse. While De Armas gives it her all, her rather obvious Cuban roots squeak in all too often through her accent throughout the film, try as she did to hide it. And while the film started out intriguing enough, with frequently changing aspect ratios and switching back and forth between black and white and color sequences, this quickly became a gimmicky and stylized crutch that the film fell back on all too often in order to overcompensate for its abstract narrative style. Overall, De Armas shines as bright as she can with what material she is given, but the film's downer mood and tone, rough and misogynistic handling of Monroe, an unearned rather lengthy runtime, and overuse of aspect ratio switch-ups and black and white/color sequences make this a thoroughly uneven and scattershot misfire of a film. But the script? That's where Blonde falls down. And when we're talking about a movie that's almost 3 hours long, the myth and the beauty of your production won't be enough to make it, and Blonde sadly proves it.

And as mentioned, the myth that Norma Jean has become since her death gets a different exploration here, but I'm not so sure that does her justice. After all, the examination and exploitation of her life and career has yielded so much material that it's now unclear where it begins and where it ends.

Ana de Armas delivers the performance of her life and I really have nothing to reproach her for, but in the end for me Blonde is a film that covers too much and doesn't really say anything that matters.

Blonde is, as with most of Dominik's efforts, unsurprisingly divisive, given that it implicates both the media, and us -- the audience -- in Monroe's unraveling and demise. (A more apt title might have been "The Male Gaze: The Movie.") Further, Blonde barely bothers situating its events in anything resembling a comprehensible order (besides being basically chronological), or segueing between periods and events in Monroe's life (as any self-respecting biopic would), or providing proper introductions to new characters, much less bidding farewell to departing ones. In short, Dominik doesn't hold anyone's hand. F**k hand holding. The overall effect, then, is a mesmerizing fever dream; as devastating as a sudden death. While in no way to everyone's taste -- more likely not to most viewers' taste -- Blonde deserves an audience. A patient and attentive and curious audience. And de Armas should win all the awards. It reminded me so much ofI watched Blonde last night. I was impressed by it, especially the incredible cinematography and the non-traditional way of telling a story, or better say portraying a character’s feelings in an unconventional way. It reminded me so much of Spencer, in sense that it’s less of a biography and more of a psychological thriller filmed from the perspective of Marilyn herself to portray what it felt like to be her.

What I didn’t like was how it made some weird jumps in time without much explanation or details as to how she got to that point, how she met said person and why things went the way they did, not to mention how some things are almost completely made up. However, thinking about it as a movie from the perspective of a mentally troubled and traumatized person suffering under the exploitation of the spotlight makes me forgive the lack of authenticity in its storytelling. it’s like she’s on a train through some kind of an apocalypse and she can’t even make sense of things as they happen and all she remembers is the feelings, not the actual events or the people.

It’s not a biopic, its not a story of Marilyn Monroe’s factual life events, it’s an art house psychological thriller/horror about Hollywood and the way it creates celebrities, and proceeds to market, exploit and dismantle them in the most horrific way, as seen through the eyes of one of the most beautiful, most popular, most misunderstood and most traumatized celebrities in the world.

The acting is suburb especially ana de armas. Words like stunning and brave don't mean anything anymore but she literally laid herself bare for all to see. This movie intentionally makes u feel. It's more a high 8 low 9 outta 10 but just for the sheer courage to make a movie like this in 2022. lifts it. A must see for any who want to c what true film can do to u emotionally. Like last year's Spencer, which was a fantasy on Princess Diana (my review), writer/director Andrew Dominik creates elaborate scenarios around Monroe's multiple tragedies (some verified and others not). Several of her iconic moments are skillfully staged, while others are ignored. Usually, every scene plays too long and intense, losing potential for emotional power. Ana de Arnas captures the star's vulnerability and pain with depth, while beautifully embodying Monroe's style. Dominik's direction takes advantage of her skill, spending almost every moment of every scene focused on her. This is a relentless tragedy with minimal bright spots that boils down to an artistic exercise more than an absorbing biopic. Expand

Unfortunately, I have never been familiar with the biography of Norma Jeane, because this film slightly opened this very biography. Why a little? Because then, as I found out, "Blonde" from Andrew Dominik is more of a feature film and the biography in it is very superficial, which is why it probably received so much negativity from fans of Marilyn Monroe and some other personalities encountered throughout the tape. The main and biggest plus of this picture is Ana de Armas, who perfectly coped with her role and showed Norma from all sides.

So much has been written about the problems with this movie so I'll just summarize my take on it with three brief points:

1. The movie is excruciatingly slow and boring and, somehow, I assure you, it manages to have content that will annoy and bore almost anyone, no matter your political or personal beliefs regarding the subjects it touches. If you're looking for entertainment, this is not it. Save the more than 160 minutes it will take you to watch this movie for a couple of other shorter but more entertaining movies.

2. The movie was obviously made by a man/men (Andrew Dominik, Brad Pitt, etc) with a longing nostalgia for Monroe's movies but who wishes they'd have seen her much more objectified and getting assaulted repeatedly in said movies (I mean, even the movie's aspect ratio signifies this nostalgic longing). All else, including all the elements inserted into the film to make it seem "artistic", are merely inserted into it to hide and justify the latter end. Despite its focus on the distasteful objectification and assault of Monroe though, it still will not manage to satisfy those that go into the movie looking for such kinds of content because of how much Dominik and his crew tried to hide this content with all the other material. Also, Dominik and/or the producers are obviously staunch anti-abortionists and so they used the movie as a vehicle for their anti-abortionist beliefs.

3. Anna de Armas was perfect for the role. She did all that could be done with the content that she was given and she's the reason I give this movie a 3 instead of a 0.

I would not classify the style chosen by Dominik as dreamlike, expressionistic or surrealist: he identified with his protagonist and decided to tell her in subjective. But who would she be? One who would have lived traumatically inelaborable childhood experiences: she could be an ordinary woman or any person, instead a diva was selected showing her split between Norma Jeane's soul and Marylin's body, from which the synthesis "Blonde". To clarify such a simple concept, the time of a medium-length film would have been enough, while the director wanted to empathetically follow his victim in a 2 hours and 46 minutes long repetition compulsion. By purging the marathon from the cloudburst of crying scenes, one would have fall within the proper lìmits of duration. Then: havin' never felt interest in the phenomenon of stardom, I am unable to judge whether there is also a complaint towards the star-system: I hope not, since Dominik's operation has as its only sure effect to launch de Armas in the empyrean of the planetary divism. Finally: if at the Venice Film Festival the film was applauded 14 minutes, evidently there are those who can afford the aesthetic care to repair such a skinning of the hands.

ClearlyI really don't know what the film was trying to do other than paint Marilyn as a complete manic depressed wreck. The film does well to character build but doesn't reign anything in for the whole film, so it becomes unnerving to watch. Clearly she was a good actress with so much potential but the whole narrative is about how bonkers she is, because of her past.

This is no way a homage to her - it actually is so far detached from realism that it seems pure fiction, all of it. It's like if the Cohen brothers directed Trainspotting.

The cinematography and overall aesthetic is beautiful, and Ana De Arma's visual storytelling is mesmerising, but it just all falls of a cliff with how wreck-less the film is.

Ana De Armas will surely be nominated for her performance. One aspect that was spot on, was the depiction of white men in positions of power and authority doing whatever they felt like with only what is in it for me mentality. So true, especially in todays world with a certain fat, fake blond, lying ex-president leading the way for all his warped, dumber than a mud fence followers. That's for all you goofs who scream and hollar about BLM, sjw, and everything else you describe as woke. Never mind their party of choice tried to overthrow our democracy and continues to do so.CKgamer, I'm looking at you. Meanwhile, as for the film, you'll either really hate this movie or you'll see what the director was trying to say and give it a decent score. As for myself? Meh... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Awful. The director Exploits Ana De Armas and Marilyn Monroe’s memory. Horrible storytelling with fictional events that never occurred, this fake biopic written by a women should never be given to a male director. It gets one star because the art team did a wonderful job. I hate how the director used Ana de Armas, she’s a great actress yet the director reduced her to someone that was engaged in the male gaze and the director made her do awful things that never happened to Marilyn Monroe. Why would you fictionalize a woman’s trauma? The movie establishes that Hollywood is cruel to women but the director uses women and gets away with it? The director is obsessed with abortion, he shows the baby in her while they perform the abortion the director chooses to show the inside view of a vagina and also there’s a terrible CGI baby that lingers too long for too many scenes. It is not okay the choices he made with her autonomy. Also why do we need to see inside her? Marilyn who suffered injustice, why be cruel to her memory? The movie is cruel and objectifies Ana de Armas and depicts Marilyn’s trauma through cruel fiction and is not at all subversive at all. Mind you that Ana de Armas was objectified in Blade Runner in a dystopian future. Uncomfortable, cringe depictions and not at all what and who Marilyn was. Don’t watch it. Expand

The scenes are portraying a meek, sad woman rather than the intelligent, kind and strong woman she was. Marilyn was a pioneer in many ways. She fought for equality and was an advocate for civil rights. She was not a bimbo as portrayed in "Blonde". This movie did not flow smoothly. The scenes were jumping back and forth, and it seemed as if there was no reason as to why some scenes were in black and white and some in color. It was just bad. I have seen other Marilyn movies, and this does not hold a candle to the others. Honestly, I am not sure why this was made except to tarnish her name. I wish I had not watched it because I cannot get those 165 minutes back of my life. I am not sure where the disconnect began or who caused this to fall short, but anyone involved in this project may want to rethink their life choices. You can portray her as a whore and ignorant, but you cannot be too ignorant if people are still making movies about you 60 years after your death. I am not familiar with Ana De Armas, but I will not seek out her bodies of work. That may have been different if I had seen her in other films, but this is my point of reference, and it is not good. Do not waste your time, you will regret it. Expand

Going to use this movie as an example when people ask me why men should not be allowed to write movies about women.

While the previous presented a glossy idealistic interpretation of Elvis' life this movie gave disturbing surrealist take on the life of Marilyn Monroe, yet both movies share the same theme. Both icons of our past, and both treated as commodities for our consumption. I've a feeling this movie will be studied for a while, if only people can get past the disturbing, sensationalized content first. It also begs to question, are there stories that shouldn't be told. How much is too much and would the focus of such stories approve of their story being told in such a manner if they were still alive? Ana de Armas is mesmorizing in the role, and brings a depth to the character of Marilyn that shows a woman acting as another woman. Truly a beautiful film, and director Andrew Dominik creates something truly captivating and haunting, but is it true? And is hiding behind source material that labels the work as fiction, good enough? That's hard to say. Expand

On the other hand, the film's theme's are tone-deaf, the dialogue shotty and cliched, and the direction overall messy and incoherent. Upon seeing the strong hate for the film, I was determined to give it its fair chance. After the film finished, I realized why the reaction has been so strong. For those that felt the film was offensive and vile, I can certainly see that point of view. For those that found the film artistically brave, bold, and creative, I can certainly see that point of view as well. Both reactions truly represent the best and worst parts about the film which is why I say it's the epitome of a "mixed-bag". Expand

This movie is not as bad as everyone says, the problem with it is that this is made for people who are familiar with Marilyn Monroe, her career, her movies, her lovers, her scandals, her background, and even her rumors.

The movie doesn't present a story for the audience to learn and get to know more about Marilyn, it's more like a visualization that paints the right picture with the right mood for fans and people that are already familiar with everything that happens in this movie. Characters are not introduced, and sometimes they don't even mention who they are, like Joe Dimaggio. You're supposed to already know, identify, and anticipate what will unfold.

I am not that big into Marilyn as many people are. I've seen a few of her movies and knew a thing or two about her. The rest I just figured out or got the picture. A couple of times I did stop the movie to google something.

I watched this movie because I like Andrew Dominik. I think he's a great director, and he did a great job here. The movie is just too long, but for that I blame streaming services who demand movies be 3 hours long.

So in conclusion, if you're a Marilyn Monroe obsessive, I'm sure you already watched this and loved it. If you don't even know her real name was Norma Jean, stay away.
