I still go back to this movie and re-watch it when I feel like watching a good movie so I would definitely recommend this movie for anyone to watch, its a appropriate movie for adults and even young kids to watch. To begin with, black widowFinally after waiting and waiting and waiting, it's finally here. Marvel knows us fans very well, we like action, drama and history, that same formula is seen in all its MCU movies and black widow is no exception. To begin with, black widow was originally going to be released two years ago, but because of the covid-19 we did not get to see it that same year and that takes away more impact than the film would have caused in theaters, in addition to making a film someone was already dead (Not bad but it feels strange) and especially that it has not been released on the intended date, but that does not mean that it is bad, on the contrary it is very good and that is why in this review I have given it 5 stars , the reason: the story has a lot of intrigue and it keeps you on the screen at all times, there are new great characters and among them the red guardian (FOR ME) is the most brilliant and recognizable extra of the film played by the great David Harbor. Something that I loved about the film is the fight in the air, in fact it is my favorite of the whole film and the CGI (special effects) never disappoints in a Marvel movie, in addition to having a great villain. In conclusion Black Widow is a very good, funny and very shocking movie. Fun fact: The director of Black Widow (Cate Short) admitted that this was her first action movie and I think it turned out pretty well. Expand

This movie should have been only 1hr and 30 minutes long as at times it drags along, that said it has good action sequences, barred from logic (common sense), it's a nice farewell to a marvel character

Takes me back to the early days of the MCU. Before there were massive crossovers, intergalactic threats, and now parallel universes. Before there were massive crossovers, intergalactic threats, and now parallel universes. A time when it was just a single hero in a relatively grounded conflict that didn't leave earth or enter another plane of existence. Heck, the title character doesn't even have powers which gives the action a Jason Bourne or Mission Impossible vibe. It's also unconcerned with throwing a constant barrage of humor at the audience making this the most tonally serious superhero movie we've received since the last time a Zack Snyder work was released in theaters.

Set not long after the events of Civil War, the plot sees Natasha Romanoff taking on a secret shadow organization with ties to her past. Not since Ant-Man and the Wasp has a Marvel flick been so self-contained and detached from moving the overall cinematic world it takes place in forward at all. As a result, it is totally skippable as you won't be missing anything in the grander story of the MCU should you choose not to watch it. Black Widow does still have value though in that it takes a hero who for years has sat alongside Hawkeye as the lamest, most out of place feeling member of The Avengers and actually provides a reason to give a crap about her. The emotional journey the former KGB agent goes on and the unique bond she shares with her supporting cast/family finally grants her a moment in the spotlight when in the past she's been little more than someone who was just sort of there and didn't really contribute much.

Not every issue with the heroine has been fixed however. I've always felt Kevin Fiege and crew have played it a little loose with the character's abilities to make up for the lack of girl power present in the "Earth's Mightiest Heroes." I understand she's a highly trained and physically fit individual, but there's nothing here that says she's expressly any more resistant to damage than you or I so seeing her walk away from moments that should have killed or at the very least seriously injured a non-superhuman with hardly a scratch is egregiously unbelievable. That combined with the fact that some of the narrative's big reveals are incredibly predictable are what keep this from achieving perfection.

Still, in an era when this franchise is focused on adapting the weirdest, wildest, and most grandiose chapters of its comic counterparts, it's nice to get something that hearkens back to the scale and scope of the first Iron Man while sporting an espionage thriller style that calls to mind The Winter Soldier. It's also the only time a director not named James Gunn has been able to make their distinctive presence felt in a MCU project. I would love to see Cate Shortland helm another entry maybe centered around Yelena Belova or, if my dreams come true, Red Guardian. So despite admittedly being a couple of films and a few miniseries behind, this is what currently has my vote as the best post-Endgame content to come out thus far.

it kind of sucks that this is the movie they made for her, it feel like they just wanted to introduce new characters into the franchise and they used her film to do so. the action scenes and performances are great but black widow deserves better than this.

overall still a pretty good action film. not the beacon of of light for female led films in the MCU but nonetheless still a good addition to the franchise.

p.s. taskmaster was a really big let down and ray winston was comically bad. i think he was supposed to be a " men with power " are evil type of character but the message was way to heavy handed.

mediocrity at its best, not the worst standalone marvel film but far from the best. placed awkwardly at the beginning of the Phase four this overdue conclusion to Natasha Romanoff story had all the odds against itself. shortland directionmediocrity at its best, not the worst standalone marvel film but far from the best. placed awkwardly at the beginning of the Phase four this overdue conclusion to Natasha Romanoff story had all the odds against itself. shortland direction seems adequate but when the story is written this colorless what can any one do but grit their teeth and wait for it to be over?

the unpredictable delays caused by the pandemic made the release of black widow a cartoonish event with 'featuretts' that were meant to maintain the hype around the movie adversely revealed 85% of it without a actual release in sight but even when it dropped the disappointment seemed to echo alongside worry at this clumsy start.

on its positive side black widow nails it's balance of heartwarming family comedy and action. and almost it's casting(that task master reveal was a huge misstep imo ).david harbor is a phenomenal addition o the marvel universe ,a minefield of punch lines & physical comedy and likewise florence pugh as yelena is just stellar, the gift that keeps on giving. another obvious misstep is how empty and bland Natasha feels in her own movie, her trauma narrowly explored and always the most underwhelming performance in her scenes. the plot also felt very inconsequential and easily overcame, the stakes were either low or unrealistic(even for a marvel movie).

just like captain marvel before it this is another mishandled heroine fronted blockbuster that despite having significant award winning stars involved result in a very uneven story that you can barely invest yourself in

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was terrible. I knew the moment it was announced that taskmaster would be the antagonist that they wouldn’t do him justice. Taskmaster should be a badass! Not… this. this is sad, black widow didn’t even do anything in this movie! every time her and taskmaster met, something completely out of both of their control happens to thwart taskmaster, the plot armor on black widow here through the entire movie is thick as a brick wall. no, thicker, because taskmaster in this movie breaks through many walls, but the average strength, not computer brained human scarlet johansson can still match her in hand to hand combat. if you’re looking for a fun marvel movie, this isn’t it. if you’re looking for a good taskmaster, this also isn’t it. if you want a satisfying black widow story, try again! what you get from this movie is a mediocre action movie, with callbacks to the universe it takes place in; like if at the end of a bad diehard remake superman came up and said “good job bruce willis!”
please don’t waste your time or money, just rewatch ragnarok or guardians for the fiftieth time.

This movie gets the lowest possible rating for its propagandistic depiction of Russia and its citizens.

Non-US affiliated male Russians are portrayed as incompetent or cunning, calculating, cruel, corrupt, lacking sophistication etc., whereas their female counterparts are portrayed as victims (e.g. the scenes after Natasha and her sister are taken from their 'parents' being filmed in such a way as to evoke documentary footage of human trafficking and prostitution rings; the Widows being deprived of their reproductive organs by their male superiors.) And Russian prison wardens and inmates apparently do not merit rescue by our heroes after being buried underneath an avalanche.

The film-makers want it both ways - we are to believe that Russia is a backward nation with second-rate technology (note the cumbersome Russian helicopter contrasted with the sleek American Quinjet), but also one that is extremely capable at causing international strife - due to the indoctrination of its citizens, the deprivation of their individuality and free will. A 'good' Russian is thus one that hopes to escape to Ohio ('The Land of the Free') or join an American superhero taskforce.

To have all the Russian characters portrayed by Western actors is but another glaring example of the movie's dishonesty, but also helps us identify it as that which it ultimately is - propagandistic filmmaking. Black Widow exemplifies the considerable sway of the US military-entertainment complex, its ability to impose its geopolitical agenda on the MCU; but the obvious propaganda leaves the movie bereft of any artistic merit it may have otherwise possessed.

I can but humbly suggest that viewers seek out Andrey Zvyagintsev's masterful 'Loveless' for its critical, unflinching portrayal of modern-day Russia.

I'd like to add that 'feminism' and 'SJWs' aren't to blame for the movie's Russophobia. That so many users here believe this to be the case is quite worrisome, and imo proof of the efficacy of our politics of division. We should all wish (for the world) to be free of scapegoatism, oppression and double-standards.

With some fixes, improvements and the iron out of some weaknesses I can see this becoming a masterpiece. To clarify this: A lot of things work in the movie but there are also some inconsistencies, things that work only because of the actors good chemistry (instead of the script) and there are a few things that should be shown better or more in details to be more believable (I avoid spoilers here so sorry for this cryptic description). It sounds to negative as for itself it is a good final movie for Black Widow and Scarlett Johansson even if I wished more for her final movie appearance. With the lawsuit from her against Disney they will hardly ever give her another role. With this her best movie is Captain America Winter Soldier. There she had a big role, you learned a lot about her and the movie itself was one of the best in the MCU. But lets go back to this movie. The movie is set after the events of Captain America Civil War and the enactment of the Sokovia Accords but before Infinity War. Natasha Romanoff is on the run because of the climax of Civil War. She is hunted by Thaddeus Ross as he took this personal and is obsessed. However everyone who knows her skills, experience and determination will know that this will just be humiliating for him (I don't think he has a snowballs chance in hell except she decided to let him caught her willingly). Story: After a flashback to the past which is nicely done and shows a lot of the characters baggage, motivation and connections we switch to the present. Like I said Natasha is on the run and will lay low for a time. This is where her past caught up to her as a seemingly unimportant package at her hideout and a mysterious person that wants to get this start the events of the movie. This will be a roller coaster ride with her past, emotions and former patch work family. The story mostly works but they a few mistakes. They have a few weak moments in the script, do not follow the show don't tell rule in a key past event and there are also things in the script you should not think to much about. However it is solid, enjoyable and hits more than it misses. A bit more polish and I see this easily at a 9/10 or higher. A warning is fair that others see this much more critical as I did. The characters are the strength of the movie and a lot of my praise comes from them. Of cause there is Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow aka Fanny Longbottom ;-). As expected you get a strong performance and also see more of the person behind her facade or should I say Black Widow persona. This was before just teased or sparingly done. I want to praise Ever Anderson as young Natasha. Even with a smaller role she impressed me. Florence Pugh as Yelema Belova is the co star and really good. I want to see more of her and lets see if she becomes the new Black Widow after the events of Endgame. My favorite new character is David Harbour as Red Guardian. Such a great performance and such an enjoyable character. A bad ass and comic relive in a way that non harms the other. Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff is mysterious and amazing. Those have such a good chemistry that it is convenient enough to overlook a few things. Now to the bad guys. Ray Winston is an antagonist I want to see more. His schemes, ideas and influence is frightening. The past were MCU movies had weak villains is far gone now. His chief henchman however which I can spoil is mixed. On paper I love the idea and it should work amazingly well. Sadly it does not work as expected. Again it is not garbage but also not awesome. I must warn you that this is another point other see far more negative. The other side roles are well done and I like the post credit scene and potential they created. Maybe continued in the Hawkeye series. As per MCU standards they have great special effects. I even would say this statement is a waste of space as no MCU movie failed in that regard except maybe a few smaller weaknesses in overall great performances. The fights are well choreographed but since I saw Shang Chi cant hold up against it and also Captain America Winter Soldier. The soundtrack is fine and uses some classics like “Cheap Thrills” and “Smells like Teen Spirits”. Lastly I say the humor works well. Overall this is a movie I hate to give a lower rating. What it does works and it is entertaining. However some weaknesses drag the rating down. I deeply enjoyed the characters and patch work family. Expand

Meh, the best part of this movie was I didn't need to pay for it as it's on Disney+ was able to watch it while finishing some work. More of a marvel toss away, as I think they were just trying to run out Scarlett Johansson's contract.

Some of the scenes do tip over into Fast & Furious levels of ridiculousness yet it only adds to the movie's scale. Taskmaster is relegated to a mute robot of a villain but still effective how they use him. A fantastic and dynamic family based action flick from Marvel. Easily in the top 10 of the MCU. Expand

Marvel has made some of finest superhero movies of the 2010's, so it comes as a surprise that Black Widow feels so pointless and at times boring. A generic action film with little consequences to the MCU at large.

Especially the little sister was really good. The villain part of the story was .. eh. Been there, done that. But there were more than a few laughs and the action is well choreographed. Fans were really worried about how the Universe would continue after the 'Avengers Endgame'. So they have decided to back and start with Black Widow's(Scarlett Johansson) life. OK let's come to the movie. 'Black Widow' isn't great and can be considered as one of the weakest movie in the MCU(even 'Captain Marvel' was way better) but still it somehow manages to keep us engaged. The movie isn't bad but fails to come up to the expectations. It completely drags on and was not quite moving in a good pace. Even though the fights were good and the acting impressive it fails to engross us till the end. When coming to the acting Florence Pugh (as Yelena) was the one who actually steals the show and David Harbour (as Red Guardian) was good too and it also has a very weird Taskmaster(Olga Kurylenko) which everyone says was bad but I don't find it disappointing. And finally they also has given us an idea about the 'Red Room' that was always haunting the MCU fans for years. The movie also carries one of the worst CGI Marvel had ever used. It was so unoriginal and unimpressive. Newbie Director Cate Shortland tried to come up with something different but however it failed to make impression (On me actually, many are finding this movie to be a great one) but I should say she had given her best. 'Black Widow' didn't turn out to be a great treat as expected but in a gloomy 2021 I should say it is one of good movies released till now. So I recommend to give it a watch because it's worth your time and nobody would find this movie to be a bad one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all let's get the praises done with. The comedic scenes are hilarious. The part where Natasha, Yelena, Alexei and Melina are sitting across the table and discussing a plan was very funny, so was when Red Guardian was telling how he is a coward and the door suddenly opens, and also when Alexei says the helicopter has enough fuel and then it suddenly falls down (although that looked a bit awkward). Secondly the actors are really great. I really like the way they act, it almost feels natural. And finally this is the only film MCU has given which doesn't have CGI. It does have VFX, but that makes sense since there's a pandemic going on and shooting in exotic locations doesn't make sense right now.
With all that said, let's move on to the negative aspects. Over here MCU finally does blasphemy. Read this carefully, word by word - "They show Black Widow get beaten". First by Taskmaster, from whom she still manages to save herself using a shield, then from Yelena whom she beats up nicely, then from Dreykov whom she beats again and then from the other widows who, well, let's get real. She can't beat them because they are girls. This is the rule of every action film, right? Speaking of the widows, there are some widows who appear in front of the camera way more than the others. This really begs the question as to why it is happening. It almost feels like they have paid the director to give them more attention.
The cinematography of this film is also terrible. There is no artificial lighting because of which all the lighting on screen is coming out naturally. The only time any colour grading is used is when the flashback is shown where Natasha blows Dreykov's daughter's school. The characters are always standing in the wrong place of the screen, which ruins the whole photography look to it. Normally if you are ever shown to come on the screen, if you're facing left you should be on the right side of the screen and vice versa. Even the shots of exotic locations look like they have been taken by a middle aged mom. In the climax scene when Natasha says, "Don't do it!" and Yelena says, "It was fun!" before thrusting the stick in the propeller, her head is in the bottom half of the screen and even the green screening can be seen in the background!
There are also multiple jump cuts in every entertaining scene. This is the reason why I won't even call this film entertaining. There are many examples that I noted down while watching the film. When Natasha's Lada explodes on the bridge, just showing the car explode takes 10 shots. The scene where their car goes in the subway is done in 9 shots. The part where Yelena gets out of the operation theatre while talking to Melina takes 18 shots. Also every indoor shot was taken from the bottom angle, because of which there were many butt shots. And here we were laughing at Batman and Robin for having three such shots.
The music is also terrible. Most of the time the music is very slow in comparison to the movement which is happening on the screen. There is also too much talking in this film. Because of a number of reasons like too quick jump cuts, natural lighting and wrong background score they didn't deliver the impact that they were probably supposed to.
Natasha's childhood version looks just like her but Yelena's doesn't. Dreykov can't be killed by a widow who can smell her, but Natasha won't even try moving away from him till she can't smell him and then shoot him? Since the story is set between Civil War and Infinity War, Natasha should have looked like she is between the two ages. But she looks way older, and that's a shame considering de-aging characters was done so well in Star Wars sequels. When Natasha and Yelena steal a bike, Taskmaster suddenly stops her tank in front of them, and waits for them to start driving away before chasing them. Why didn't she just crush them when she had a chance?
Speaking of the Taskmaster, when she removes her mask and is shown to be Dreykov's daughter, she looks so fake! Her neck is too long and her head is too forward, which doesn't make the head's shape to be like it will fit in the helmet. And speaking of characters who make no sense, there's Red Guardian. In the Gulag which is in remote Siberia, everyone is speaking in English? He is constantly talking about having a rivalry with Captain America, but that part is never explained. Unless there was another Captain America meanwhile, there is no way we aren't confused. And if that happens MCU will have a lot to answer for, considering it has not spoken about a Captain America having been there since then.
Black Widow is like a black sheep in the MCU. The problem with this film is that it has come out way too late. It feels like it was made only as a filler, so that they can grab some quick cash on a character who has been established for over 10 years. The film only adds lore to Black Widow and then goes nowhere with it. It doesn't have anything in it that you'd want to see.

Just more stupid filler like those overrated Disney Plus shows (WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki). Plus, we already know Black Widow’s unfortunate fate after watching Endgame, so there was absolutely no point in watching this making it incredibly predictable which kills all the suspense as it obviously takes place in between the events of Civil War and Infinity War. Not to mention ruining the Red Guardian (and David Harbour was miscast as him) by turning him into an ugly, goofy, fat caricature with a big, ugly beard. But worst of all, this movie COMPLETELY RUINED Taskmaster! That’s its biggest offender! The Marvel Cinematic Universe ended with Endgame. Endgame was the end of the MCU. Now Disney is just milking it with these dumb unnecessary installments and unnecessary spin-offs like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Black Widow, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Then they’re going to milk it even further with an unnecessary third Thor sequel (Thor: Love and Thunder) and an unnecessary Avengers spin-off Disney Plus show (Hawkeye). This movie is a complete waste of time just like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It sucks that there are so many mindless Disney shills supporting these lame fillers by wasting their money to watch them. Phase 4 is a dumpster fire. A Black Widow should have never been made. Don’t waste your time and money on this, just skip it! Expand
