Have you ever seen a heist movie that is also a musical?
Have you heard a sound track where gun shots are used as drums?
I haven't. Here comes "Baby Driver", a very stylish musical-slash-action movie with a script that makes no sense at all.

I haven't. Here comes "Baby Driver", a very stylish musical-slash-action movie with a script that makes no sense at all. Even great actors like Kevin Spacey are flat and unconvincing. So, why does this movie have reviews so high? Frankly, I do not know. Good music, racy races (pun intended), a new style, as I already mentioned. But poor script full of cliches of all kinds, no interesting characters. On the other hand, there is something in the film that might make it a cult movie. So, you milage may vary.

Main character precocious, never-I-smile young man with incredible (read: unrealistic) driving talents. “The girl” has no other quality except for her looks, but hey, we were all young once. Other characters (cardboard cutouts, more like it) are either stupid or sociopaths. Totally unbelievable plot, expanded beyond its meager realm of possibility in the first 3 minutes. All just an excuse to direct a few exciting car chasing scenes, last of the Mohicans I presume, since the self-driving ones are upon us. Movie is a tribute to the lost art of using a clutch, which most Americans don’t appreciate anyway, and a glorification of gun violence, which most Americans appreciate all too well. Music is too loud, and too widespread in its provenance to be memorable or exciting (who in their 20’s or 30’s has even heard of first Queen album?). With so much directorial drifting from stylish parody to serious dark movie to Bonnie and Clyde tragedy-drama to Shawshank-like redemption, the film did not even had a remote chance to be a decent one. Sorry I paid some good beer money to see it. Expand

The down side that stopped this movie from being perfect is the tone shift hard towards the end, then the ending was less than satisfactory in my opinion. With all that said I still really enjoy movie and its worth a watch. Every actor and actress added an nice pieces that fit together perfectly and made this movie really great. Expand

WOW! From what I've seen, this is Edgar Wright's best film yet. The action scenes, the car chases and the comedy are what make this film bloody amazing. All the characters in this film were needed to make the story expect Griff (Jon Bernthal). It wasn't full on comedy like all the films in the 3 flavors Cornetto trilogy which I was expecting because the trailers weren't that funny, and were not supposed to be. The film just has jokes sprinkled throughout the film which I liked. Overall, one of the best films I've seen and if you love Edgar Wright, you obviously have to see this film. Can't wait for that Blu-Ray!

LAST WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!

WTF JUST HAPPENED. As soon as Bats died, this film was extremely **** up. They were great surprises that made sense, unlike Hot Fuzz which was really silly and couldn't take seriously. Debora (Lily James) was a pretty dumb character. When Baby shot Buddy, she just goes with him without any concerns whatsoever and just goes along with him. She instantly becomes a criminal starts hurting people. WHAT!? I like how Doc (Kevin Spacy) stayed on Baby's side no matter what. Showing a true Father and son bond. Although they're not related. He died a hero, trying to save him by trying to kill Buddy and then gets ran over. Then 10 mins later, he gets shot in the leg, falls off a ledge and **** dies. The fact that pretty much every character dies other then a few made really have to walk the film off.

Baby Driver failed to exceed those expectations however. BUT! This film is really good, it kind of has it all; action scenes, tricky romance, funny scenes and you even feel for some characters; especially Joe (CJ Jones). Another good aspect is how the main villain didn't turn out to be the one i expected from the beginning. The soundtrack/music in the film is great and Edgar Wright made amazing use of the music during the action scenes. All in all 8/10 and probably would've been 9/10 if it wasn't so hyped. Expand

Baby in particular has more complicated motivations, and they are revealed in tidbits throughout the movie, but it never throws the movie off track and is actually a helpful insight into the mind of Baby. The action scenes are top-notch... I'll just leave it at that because that's the one part of the movie that no one should even be debating over. Baby's relationship with "a girl" was at first surprisingly realistic... but as things start to get more troubling for Baby, it's hard to believe how the relationship with the "girl" was effected (That's how spoiler-free I can go when it comes to talking about that.) All of the actor's performances in this movie are just enchanting... and just when you think a character is a really nice person, they end up being a bit of a **** ok, I'll stop talking about this before I get into something that'll really spoil the movie. This rag with some decent scenes in the first half fails in the second act with redundancy and lack of ideas. Years ago, there was a vehicle called the "Conquest," which was the Dodge-Chrysler version of Mitsubishi's "Starion." It was butt-ugly, and I don't mean Beyonce's derriere, nuh-uh.

But one year, va-va-VOOM they remade that sucker into a sleek and sexy ride, a ride that looked like the feeling of someone you've lusted after suddenly tipping you the wink.

Folks, "Baby Driver" is the OPPOSITE of what I just described.

If you're familiar w/ Edgar Wright's best-known directing efforts, for examples the brilliant "Spaced" series, his snappy trilogy of films starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (also from "Spaced") and the ultra-hip "Scott Pilgrim" which turned Mary Elizabeth Winstead into The It Girl of this decade, folks if you enjoyed those works and were expecting something in that vein, but w/ an even cooler soundtrack and cleverly edited car-chases...

...you will be sorely disappointed by "Baby Driver." Go in w/ no expectations but forgettable entertainment, some witty barbs, one surprising cameo that's cut short way too quickly, and dialogue/situations you'll wince at more often than not, and just maybe you'll see where the glowing reviews for this are coming from.

In other words, go back to your teenage non-jaded years. This is no "Drive," nor "The Driver," and nothing close to that hair-raising street chase from "Nightcrawler." This was "The Transporter" w/o a believable lead nor pulse-raising fight scenes. Or indeed, chase scenes worth recalling. "Baby Driver" does boast Jon Hamm's impression of The Terminator, and an ending that comes after what should have been the ending, after an uncomfortable amount of waiting time.

To wit: This DOES NOT live up to its ridiculous amount of hype. I'm rating this as high as 4 of 10 because it wasn't a bad film, just oh-so very disappointing. You've been warned.

They set the stage: Baby is introduced, we get some hints at the dark deal behind the scenes, and we learn that music is everything. The intro was so unique and fresh that I almost didn't notice as every subsequent scene played out beat for beat exactly as one might have expected from the intro, right down to the obvious deaths and betrayals and the disgusting, regressive film stereotypes. The lead man, the lead villain, and the lead criminal are all white men. The female love interest is mindlessly devoted to her man. The white guy criminal is suave and gets the most screen time of the criminals, his wife is sexy and a reflection of him, and the black guy is a scary criminal. I kept expecting my expectations to be subverted because my expectations were embarrassingly bland, but alas. Each character can be described fully in one short, nuance-free sentence, and if you leave the theater saying, "What a unique ____!" I can guarantee that word isn't "plot." Expand

To base a whole film around a soundtrack is almost certainly asking for trouble and inevitably Edgar Wright's idea and direction are both a lot better than his screenplay, which on more than a few occasions pushed the bounds of credibility. The cast are firing on all cylinders but the film annoyingly see-saws between good and fair throughout due to some loose writing. Strangely the music choices are often only ok, although credit must be given for them not having been over used in other films. Standout music piece is a track by 'Focus'(taken from Focus Three if I'm not mistaken)to accompany a chase sequence on foot involving 'Baby Driver' Ansel Elgort, who for once is actually good in a role. As befits a crime thriller the editing is sharp and the sound is clear. It must be said that the film definitely leaves an impression after disappearing from the screen. I just wish that the writing could have made that impression more consistent for me to appreciate the resultant movie better. Expand

Baby is a really likeable and interesting character, supported by the rest of the cast. The story is riveting, especially as the movie ramps up towards the final climax. The film primarily relies on practical effects and stunts making the car chases and gun fights more believable and satisfying to watch. The music, cinematography, and fast paced editing give the film a really unique style you cannot help but get into. The story also does a terrific job of balancing light and dark themes. Certain points in the movie have a lot of heart whereas others are not afraid to get violent. You get to see the contrast between different characters; some believe in making moral decisions whereas others only look out for themselves. This adds a really interesting dynamic between the main characters. Overall I loved Baby Driver, it was everything I was hoping it to be. This is one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. That the movie's plot is inextricably tied to the music is its greatest virtue. The writer/director Edgar Wright made the "Three Flavors Cornetto" film trilogy of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, the first two of which I really liked. He also made the truly underrated and under-appreciated Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which was also tied to its music. Baby Driver is very kinetic and energetic. The driving is fantastic. Aaron Elgort will most likely become more known for this film than his previous memorable performance in The Fault in Our Stars. His character here is not that developed, but he's interesting. We find out the things that happened in his life to bring him to this unique situation, without finding out anything about how he learned to drive - which seems to be his greatest gift. This is a crime/heist drama mashed up with a romance and a long form music video. There are plenty of good bad guys: Kevin Spacey is perfectly believable as the head baddy, as are most of the others. Some are a little too over the top. But this movie is not about subtlety or nuance. You have sexy bad girl Darling (Eliza Gonzalez) and sexy love interest Debora (Lily James), apparently well orchestrated heists and wall to wall music. It is a fun ride. But the story gets a little too corny, rushed and completely unrealistic at the end. Not that any of it is realistic, which Baby Driver surely is not. But it is a fun ride. And did I mention that the soundtrack is awesome? Expand

This flick is not burdened by big budget CGI and it lets the action drive excitement through a refreshing love story. The remarkable soundtrack (including Egyptian reggae!) is tightly choreographed to the action scenes. Rhythmic gunshots and even lyrical graffiti add a sense of play that contrasts the deep menace and foreboding as the body count rises and mayhem ensues.

At its heart, the movie has a moral, even as the body count rises. Baby evades the police in downtown Atlanta not because they bumble, but because his skill and planning are exceptional. The camera captures the action sequences without causing confusion or overdoing the jump-cuts. The car stunts are exciting because of the context. By avoiding ramps and keeping all four wheels on the road, the high-speed chases become believable.

The flick tips its hat to the movies that inspired it, including Goldfinger and The Blues Brothers, among many others. One nit: the use of the word "retard" in the flick and in the soundtrack grinds at my modern sensibilities (which allow for gunplay, violence and murder among the characters).

Baby is a young man being held hostage to Kevin Spacey based hpon something that happened in the past. Spacey has a rotating crew of thieves and Baby is the indentured getaway driver. The heists include banks, armored cars and even the post office. Among the thieves are John Hamm and Jamie Foxx. They do not play nicely with each other. Baby mostly tries to keep his distance from all of them, keep quiet and do his job. He listens to music constantly with his ear buds forever in his ears. A precious accident when he was very young has left him with ringing in the ears. He puts music in his ears to drown out the ringing. He has a wonderful foster father who he is very protectove of and also meets the dazzling Debora when she waits on him at a local diner. She changes his goals and helps him focus on the future. We watch as the various thieves pull off their assigned jobs and Baby gets them away from the cops. There is a thing with Jon Hamm that is hard to swallow and I found myself saying, "Give me a break!". But, other than that, I thought this was a very engrossing movie. You really care about Baby and are rooting for him throughout the picture. The music is almost another character because we see Baby doing everything in time to the music buzzing in his head. Very interesting. Expand

The one-r toward the beginning was especially well directed. Wright's timing from his earlier comedies still shows throughout the film, adding to both the comedy and the intensity of the action throughout. Sound was well handled in the film, with Wright taking advantage of the standard surround sound and playing soundtrack and environmental elements as if the viewer shares the same ears as the main character. Toward the end, there's a moment when the audience is violently reminded they share the same ears as Baby, so the next couple scenes are more immersive than normal. Wright has a number of call-backs to his earlier films, notably a comedic story technique used at the beginning of Shaun of the Dead and a couple spoofs of Michael Bay shots he'd previously used in Hot Fuzz.
Timing was everything in this movie and that every scene had its own unique beat was interesting. This movie did blatant soundtrack usage correctly, which is rare today.
The color grading of the film is different depending on the tone of each scene and who's in it, which is pretty refreshing. There's a specific character who, whenever they're on screen alone with Baby, the color grading goes to the same one used in Baby's flashbacks but without a filter over it, which was strong visual story telling. This carried over into how ideas are established throughout the film, especially toward the climax, where there's a scene where a minor character's dialogue and letters on a box tell a story, one of the characters tells the story they got from those elements, and finally another character subverts audience expectations based on that story.
The story itself follows a familiar path, but it follows it due to the personality traits of each character and the conflicts which arise between them. Spacey and James' characters represent character motivations and pressures for Baby which parallel his parents (not a spoiler), Jon Hamm's character is a perfect counterpart and foil to Baby which pushes him to make choices which reveal what he cares about most, his caretaker is a catalyst for change in his character and his realization of his true character motivations, and Foxx's character is a lesser foil which forces Baby into the situation which will eventually require him to make the choices he makes in the face of Jon Hamm's character.
The film has a somewhat typical but tight and well written plot, impressive stage direction (especially on the one-r), imaginative and immersive use of sound, characters who matter and the four most important of these characters undergo believable character arcs (the others are used to facilitate these arcs or give evidence of each characters true nature), and the editing is the best I've seen in a long time. Some of the driving in the film can get confusing on some of the faster paced chase scenes, but all of the driving sequences are exciting at the least and the film isn't actually about driving so much as it is about someone who, by happenstance, is forced into the position of driving. Every chase scene has some unique situation or stunt and the film feels much shorter than its 113 minute run time.
Probably the most solid action film I've seen in years and a great date movie if both of you are okay with violence in film.

It was slick and well done, but it just seemed to lack something, like it had no soul. It was formulaic, predictable, and quite dull. I liked the way the editing was done to the music much of the time, but I didn't care for the music. The characters were unlikeable, especially the lead. Nobody had any chemistry.
It was technically well made, but just didn't come together for me.
It would be a fine rental I suppose. I might have liked it better if the characters and the music were better. The two friends I saw it with were much harsher on it than I am, and they are fans of Edgar Wright as well.
The last Fast and Furious movie was probably better.

The film“Baby Driver” is the brainchild of writer/director Edgar Wright who brings us this action packed adventure involving bank heists and getaway chases that would make the producers of “Bullitt” and “The French Connection” gasp in awe. The film stars Ansel Elgort In the title role as the young man forced to drive getaway cars for a group of characters played by Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Eliza Gonzalez, Lily James and James Foxx. Fast paced with the director’s foot constantly on the pedal, the film has a few dramatic moments and a simple story but, more than anything, the real star or stars (depending on what car is being used) are the vehicles speeding across the screen. Mr. Elgort is wonderfully cast as the main character of the film and draws the audience into his plight and circumstance with easy identification. Mr. Hamm, alas, is apparently faced with the George/Jason Alexander syndrome for he is not really believable as a punk hold up guy and seems better suited to be behind a desk an office on the Mad Men set. I give the film an 8 because, more than anything, it is an easy and enjoyable theatrical experience. Expand

The opening scene sets a manic tone for the rest of film in what feels like a mashup between La La Land and The Town. Simply put, writer/director Edgar Wright has a way of moving through scenes and occupying their spaces like none other. The visceral nature of Baby Driver is also attributable to the fact that 95 percent of the action and effects happen in-camera—shot on 35mm film no less—with CGI utilized for just a few touch-ups and quick shots. Baby Driver is yet another superb addition to Edgar Wright’s already impressive list of films. And thankfully it serves as a sort of oasis, easily among the best films released this year, in what so far has been a remarkably tepid output from Hollywood. Expand

Seems like an attempt to sell a mixtape. The characters make no sense whatsoever and the final "act" of the movie is just a waste; they seem confused about what they wanted the characters and movie to be. By the end, it seems like they had a cogent movie but edited away too much, which is crazy because the movie is still long as it is. Also, Ansel Elgort is awful and for some reason they told him to fake a southern accent, which is just ridiculous and in no way supportive of any necessary plot elements. It sounds like he has a speech impediment. Anyway, Jamie Foxx was pretty good in it. Also, to name the movie "Baby Driver" and end the movie with the Simon and Garfunkel song of name is so eye-rollingly cheesy. Expand

Baby Driver, an action film about a man named Baby (Ansel Elgort) who is a getaway driver, is perhaps Wright's most commercially appealing film. With the box office to match and the film shaping up to a box office surprise to many this summer, it seems as though Wright has finally found some mainstream acceptance, at least in America. As with many directors who finally escape niche audiences and finally find themselves receiving applauds from the general public (without having to resort to their work being a "cult classic"), Wright has unfortunately compromised some of the frenetic fun of his early work. Though Baby Driver is nonetheless a quirky, funny, and often times surreal film, it winds up feeling wholly underwhelming with Wright ditching what made his earlier films work so well: characters.

Though Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz were both action comedies, they nonetheless had great central characters. The supporting cast got the same treatment in those action films and this was especially true in his other works, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The World's End. Unfortunately, this latest work gives very little for any character. Baby, a music-loving kid with tinnitus and who is in love with Debora (Lily James), is given very little depth even as the star. Beyond having a black foster dad and dead parents, it is hard to imagine what was supposed to be learned about the kid. He does not really grow and is never really given room to explore any bit of him beyond brief flashbacks to the car crash that gave him tinnitus and killed his parents along with a cassette tape that has a recording of his mom (Sky Ferreira) singing. Too often, Wright seems to rely upon old school musical classics as a shortcut to actually write dialogue between characters or characters' backstories. It is often excusable when the supporting cast is lightly developed or if a film fails to develop many characters beyond narrative cliches when there is not a single protagonist. Unfortunately, beyond being a good kid with a bad past that has led to him being bound to crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey) as a getaway driver, Baby gets no depth or nuance. As a result, it is easy to just roll your eyes with how pale he winds up being written.

This same problem is found with the entirety of the supporting cast. His girlfriend, Debora, is shown as being nothing more than idyllic yes man who does whatever Baby tells her to do. Leave work now? Sure. Travel the country right now with a guy you barely know? Sure. Let this guy just follow you home? Of course. She has no ideas of her own. No volition and, crucially, no motivation. Wright, likely, keeps it this way to make it easier to turn her into a stone cold badass at the end with her taking on Buddy (Jon Hamm) and trying to outrun the cops. Neither are convincing moments with how she is set up as nothing more than a young girl trying to make a living at a dead end job. Wright treats her as arm candy, lets her have a moment towards the end, and then reassures the audience she is nothing more than a dream girl from a song and relegates her to being nothing more than cute for trying to save Baby, but let's let the men handle this one, eh? For Doc, he suffers from the same issue, but in reverse. Though he does seem to always like Baby, his turn from a hard-nosed criminal who will never let go of Baby to a soft and sentimental man who sacrifices himself to save his beloved driver is borderline comical. The film may be an action-comedy, but its absurd and ludicrous suggestion that Debora could go from quiet waitress to being Bonnie and Doc could go from being a true monster to being Sulley from Monsters Inc. carries no water. These two, despite their vital importance to the plot, are woefully underwritten. For bank robbers Buddy, Darling (Eiza Gonzalez), and Bats (Jamie Foxx), they are similarly underwritten. All of them are crazy and impulsive with no depth for any of the trio ever being considered. They are just nuts and cannot be trusted. With them all being treated as villains of Baby by the end, this cast of underwritten villains makes it apparent why Wright wanted to work with Marvel: his lack of knowledge of how to write a capable villain would be welcomed, instead of questioned. The only saving grace with the villain is a good motivation for why they become the villain, but it comes off of the back of too little development until then to really make it click.

So the new twist on the same old story is that the main character listens to music 24/7. It really doesn't add anything to the story. The movie was also poorly written and you have to suspend any notion of reality when the bullets start flying. Now, you can cool action star to that list. He plays a getaway driver extraordinaire, who listens to music while he performs amazing getaways and impressive stunts. The crooks he works with (including Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx & Jon Hamm) add all sorts of conflicts. Then there's his love at first site (a lovely and charming Lily James). While the crooks gets to chew on the scenery, it's Elgort's sweet style that holds it all together. What really makes the movie such a winner is Edgar White, who's written a sharp, engrossing vehicle (pun intended) and infused it with outstanding stunts, clever directorial touches and a killer soundtrack. It's popcorn fun from the impressive opening chase to appropriate ending. The most fun of the summer, so far. Expand

An incredibly fun movie that will leave you pumped. Definitely worth seeing in theaters.

That said, it is not without it's problems. For a movie that advertises itself as being a car chase movie, it has relatively few chases, even getting the best out of the way right off the hop. What you get instead is a love story that improbably strays toward Bonnie and Clyde, then ditches that cliche at the last minute. I was also disappointed with Baby's back story, as the "good guy trapped in a bad spot" justification for wrong-doing is getting old. And finally, you'll have to suspend your disbelief during the gun play, as our heroes/villains seemingly have a dozen horseshoes up their backsides!

All that a side, the direction and acting are superb and, if you're like me, will leave you wanting more.

True, it was a very long time ago, and he doesn’t seem to make the same movie twice, which usually is a compliment, but not here. Baby Driver is a very long (much too long) music video with not very interesting car chases – has no one in Britain ever seen Bullitt? Nicely shot, but no heart, no real emotion, and definitely no conflict. It’s also silly and sentimental, which is odd for a crime film. After about 10 minutes (maybe 5), we all knew how this would turn out. I am tempted to repeat the old waste-of-time cliché – “Sadly, that’s 113 minutes I’ll never see again!” Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can already tell that Baby Driver is going to be one of my favorite films of the year. I could feel this movie is special right from the start. Every actor plays their character well, and every character is well written and interesting.
Unlike other movies with cool rock n' roll soundtracks, where the songs are simply there and they sound cool, this movie is edited around each song. I held my breath through the first scene as I was blown away by the insane car chase and amazing editing. Every scene is cut to move with whatever song Baby is listening to, and every song fits the tone and pacing of the scene. Because of the editing and soundtrack, this movie is very stylized and fun to look at.
Baby Driver is not all style, though. Every character is well written and well directed. I found each criminal Baby had to work with interesting. They obviously had history and interesting back stories, but the movie did not slow itself down with needless exposition. In fact, very little is known about each criminal, but they are all unique and fun to watch. There is obviously chemistry between the actors, and this makes the comedy and drama land really well.

However, there were some scenes that were not perfect. The first is when Baby and company must visit "The Butcher," who is their arms dealer. The guy talks about his weapons like they are cuts of meat, calling one gun bacon, another prime rib, etc. This threw me out of the movie since it seemed unrealistic and strange to me. John Wick 2 had a similar scene, which was equally confusing. While to someone who is not accustomed to firearms this dialogue might sound cool, to me it doesn't make sense why a seasoned criminal would not just call a gun by its name. Similarly, why would John Wick ask for something more "robust," when he could just ask for a 12 gauge shotgun, or an AK, or whatever he wants. I had similar thoughts during Baby Driver's arms dealer scene. Fortunately this was a short part of the movie, so it didn't really effect my rating too much.
One more thing that bugged me is that Baby's girlfriend decides to join Baby after discovering that he is a criminal. She never really questions him. Realistically, if I had been with a guy for a week, and then found out he was a wanted criminal being chased by the law and several angry bank robbers, I would get as far away from him as possible. I think this is my biggest gripe concerning the movie, but it is still such a small part of the movie that it doesn't effect my score by much.

Overall this is an amazing film. I don't want to give away too much, so I will leave this review here. I give it a 95%. It had a few flaws, but honestly I couldn't think of anything I didn't like about the movie when I was coming out of the theatre. I really had to let it seep for a few hours before I could think of the flaws. I would definitely recommend seeing this over any other new releases. Instead of wasting your ticket on Transformers, go see Baby Driver.

Sure we’ve seen that before but it brings a freshness to this genre that you just can’t help but love. Without a doubt the soundtrack is the best thing about Baby Driver. It’s not simply distracting you with catchy songs like some movies. It incorporates the songs brilliantly they become essential to the story. You can’t imagine Baby Driver without the soundtrack.
Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey are particularly great accompanied by Jon Hamm and just the right amount of Jamie Foxx but as for Lily James and Eiza Gonzalez, well they’re just there for the sake of it. Underdeveloped with little to no chemistry with any of the other characters. I thoroughly enjoyed Baby Driver but what lets it down unfortunately was the over the top conclusion. Or should I say conclusions. Feels a lot like Edgar Wright had three different endings in mind, couldn’t choose one so went with all three. This was rather disappointing to see as I had such high hopes and all the critics haven’t stopped fangirling over this movie for months. Well I’m not going to fangirl over it. When it comes down to it you’ve got action, fantastic car chases reminiscent of great action movies through the ages all accompanied by a stand out soundtrack so what more do you want? Recommended.

Ansel Elgort plays the cool Baby, a young driver whose job is to drive a group of criminals so they can heist. He works under the intimidating Doc (Kevin Spacey) who is very demanding when it comes to Baby. We see that Baby lives a quiet life looking after his deaf companion, and whatever money he makes, he uses it to feed him, and make sure he's well looked after. Baby attends to a diner, and meets a pretty young waitress named Debora (Lily James), who also shares a love for music. They seem to really hit it off, and this becomes a thing for the two of them. However, things get complicated when a thug named Bats (Jamie Foxx), who doesn't like to waste time, he prefers to do the job, and get away just like that, no other questions asked. The movie is impressive and entertaining, and proves even further that Edgar Wright is one of the most underrated filmmakers working today. With films from; 'Shaun of the Dead' (2004), to 'The World's End' (2013), he has proven to be both original, and using some effective camerawork to craft his films. I really liked the romantic chemistry between Elgort and James, and at a time where many movies are filled with unnecessary and somewhat bland romantic subplots, theirs is honestly the best one I've seen since 'Deadpool' (2016). Hopefully, in the future, we get more films that are as expertly crafted and equally as fun as this. Probably the most fun movie in 2017. Expand

Edgar Wright has truly outdone himself in what I consider one of the greatest comeback films ever. From a wide variety of interesting well developed characters, to a tasty platter of amazing songs that practically run the scenes, Baby Driver proves to be summers greatest hit thus far. In the first few moments of the film, Baby (Ansel Elgort) proves why he is Docs(Kevin Spacey) "lucky charm". I mean..... this kid can drive! But not just that, he is also incredibly smart which aids in their robbery escapes multiple times in the film. That's one of things I like about Baby Driver, or more specifically Edgar Wright. He clearly puts so much time and effort into each character; and never stops at the bare minimum. We can see this through the other thieves and misfits as well. I especially liked Jon Hamms character Buddy, I thought his personality was extremely complex up until his last line of dialogue. And don't even get me started on Kevin Spacey. This man proves why he is one of the best, if not the best actor of all time. The character of doc was so complex, especially with his relationship with Baby. In a weird way it sort of worked like a father son relationship, which Wright played out in the best way possible. I would also like to point out that in current times it's easy to loose the stakes in action sequences, however, because of the dynamics between the characters it keeps you on the edge of your seat. There is one scene in the Diner that was specifically clever, props to Jamie Foxx. Another great part of Baby Driver was it's music. I can't honestly think of a time when an amazing song wasn't playing. This film is actually run by the music! Which is incredibly clever, but also highly entertaining. I thought he played that part of Babys character so well into the scenes and dialogue with other characters. Every part of this movie moved to the sound of the beat, and I just love that attention to detail. It really makes each scene that much more enjoyable.

Finally, I thought the ending to the film was a very refreshing spin on a modern day criminal/hero. Baby Driver brought real life consequences to the decisions its characters make, and I couldn't agree more with that style of storytelling.

Some minor discrepancies would probably be the fact that Baby fell in love incredibly quickly. His love Deborah (Lily James) also seemed a little to willing to risk her life so early into a relationship. But I guess if it's love it's love.

Overall, If you are looking for an incredible thrill ride. Speed to Baby Driver right now, it truly is an incredibly well written/acted/edited thrill ride that always plays to the sound of the beat.

Baby Driver is a fun, exciting film from start to finish they don't go anywhere downhill and very second his pulse pounding. Edgar Wright made an awesome and fun original film with all the actors doing their absolute best in this high stakes film.

Personally this has been the best well rounded movie I have seen all year. The film was well shot, the sound editing was amazing, and the cast was fantastic. Ansel Elgort as “Baby” played a very likable but conflicted main protagonist. His performance supplemented by a great supporting cast (Eiza Gonzalez, Jamie Fox, John Ham, and Kevin Spacy). Worth mentioning, the movie had a very well-coordinated continuous shot, as well as amazing implantation of song and sound. Edgar Wright and Team were able to turn the movie into a best hits playlist without it becoming boring or stagnant. The way in which song was incorporated into each scene was unique and did not take away from the story. I recommend this film to anyone looking for a new original screen play, or fans of fast moving crime films. Expand

The way it uses the music is just so great. It's so different from all the other movies, but it isn't artsy in a way that only the critics will like it: this is a movie for everyone. I went with a friend who is really hard to please when it comes to movies, but I just knew he would love this. And I was right, I never saw him as excited about a movie as he was about this one. It's just so much fun to watch, but it's also serious when it needs to be and it has very intruiging characters. But I'll be honest, the core of the movie is its music. I think this is the second time I say it, but the music works so well. If I wasn't in the theaters I would sing with the songs. Even though it's completely different, it reminds me a bit of Fury Road in the way that it makes you want to punch your fist and the air and cheer during the movie. In reality I think it's more a mixture of La La Land and Grand Theft Auto (it's definitely not a musical btw). Go see this movie. I don't want to overhype anyone, but I'll make a bold statement and say this is my favorite Edgar Wright movie. I'll be shocked if this doesn't appear on many 'Best of the Year' lists in December, at least I already know it'll be on mine. Expand
