This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aquaman is one of my favorite films from James Wan and shows that the director is capable of handling multiple genres. Aquaman may not be the best movie we’ve seen in the DCEU, but it’s by far the most fun and entertaining and has the most rewatch value. The visuals are phenomenal, the fight sequences are fantastic and the premise is pretty good too. The acting supplements all this really well; all the big actors do great jobs with their roles and Jason Momoa is a surprisingly good casting choice for Arthur Curry. This movie is a solid origin story for Aquaman that I only wish we’d had before the Justice League disaster so we could’ve had context for character upon seeing him in a big group setting, although the movie does play off of Curry’s appearance in Justice League nicely. Patrick Wilson is a very welcome face in this movie for me and fans of the Insidious and Conjuring franchises and marks his 5th collaboration (I believe) with Wan. Wilson shows how good of an actor he is in this movie. I appreciate how this movie made good use of all it’s big-name and A-list actors; it didn’t squander any of them and gave an actor we haven’t seen too much of before the film the spotlight a few times. I do wanna reiterate a point I made earlier now about the movie being fun. Aquaman struck a very different tone and mood than pretty much every other film in the DCEU; the other movies have been very serious or comedic, but haven’t been so in ways that make them truly entertaining. Aquaman has a very different vibe from the rest of the DCEU, and it’s a breath of fresh air. Aquaman wants to be a fun movie and succeeds in doing so, and it’s a movie I could watch 5 or more times and still be entertained by, a luxury I don’t personally have with any other film in the DCEU. All that said, Aquaman isn’t a perfect movie, and it’s biggest fault for me is the dialogue. It’s really cheesy, cringey and corny at times and without the great performances from the actors some scenes would be really awkward, stupid and unwatchable. Some the actors, especially Patrick Wilson, have to be on their A-game to keep a straight face while they say their lines due to how ridiculous the dialogue is at times. Honestly, if the dialogue had been better, this movie probably would’ve been a perfect 10 for me since everything else about the movie works really well; the dialogue is something I hope they work on and refine in the sequel, which according to Wan started filming recently. Overall, Aquaman may not be perfect or the best movie in the DCEU but it’s a fun, entertaining and action-packed movie and has some of the best rewatch value of the whole DCEU. Expand

His action and battle sequences are nothing short of epic with the latter being large enough in scale to rival even the most thrilling conflicts in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The CGI is pretty dodgy, but that's kind of forgivable given how nobody's really tried all of this underwater stuff before. Tougher to overlook the on land portions though, especially with those glaringly obvious green screens.

This is kind of like the DCEU's Black Panther. You've got a guy battling for a throne he feels unworthy of and a cast of characters who are ultimately outshined by the world they live in. The film basically takes place in an underwater Wakanda, only with somehow even more fantastical elements. I never formed an emotional connection with anything despite the film's constant efforts to try and convince me that Arthur's mommy issues actually mattered, but I was nonetheless fascinated by all the places I was being taken onscreen.

Our ability to really connect with the characters is hindered by how lively the plot is. There's so much going on that it's hard to believe things never feel overstuffed or exhausting despite the fact that the pace never relents for a single second. Impressive given how having this much content led to Spider-man's cinematic demise twice before he found his way to the MCU. Of course it also doesn't help that Wan layed the Velveeta on thick. A move that feels intentional, but robs the movie of some quality that otherwise would have been there.

Aquaman remains a lot of fun though. It plays out like an action-adventure movie with Jason Momoa trotting around the globe in search of an ancient weapon like some kind of mega-buff Indiana Jones. There's plenty of jaw-dropping spectacle and Atlantis is such an imaginative, fascinating place that it's hard to take your eyes off the screen no matter how irreverent and goofy things can get.

This film is a visual masterpiece that is sadly hindered by an unbelievably poor script. DC need to find some better writers. Thankfully though, this is a massive step in the right direction as visually the film has resonance of Avatar, and moments of epic scale that feel like scenes from Star Wars of Lord of the Rings, and that is exceptionally high praise. Where was this CG team for the other DC movies?! Don't let them go DC, they are your strongest asset for now.

Jason Momoa does ooze charisma and is a pleasure to watch, even when he is forced to deliver some of the worst lines in cinematic history, and Amber Heard makes for an excellent leading lady, commanding just as much screen presence as the Massive Momoa, an impressive feat indeed.

Give this film a chance! DC may actually be on their way to being a cinematic force worth appreciating.

I know people want so much for DC getting a win, and Aquaman is imho the best cinematic current univ DC movie, but the movie is just mediocre.

Pros:
Momoa is a good casting choice and brings flair to the character. CGI are top notch and some of the scenes are visually stunning. There is a fight mid-movie which was excellently choreographed and shot. Writing is decent first half.

Cons:
Momoa and Amber have a few scenes in which he looks so bored and out of character. The story is bald in the second part. The reveal near the end with his mother is so far-fetched and takes away all the tension. Not only that but Aquaman's " I don't care" attitude makes it lack any tension. Last fight is exactly the opposite of the previous fight I mentioned in terms of quality. Mera and Aquaman relationship is forcibly written. The villain's plot is a joke (I'm not referring to the brother), if you take all his screen time out, the story would be exactly the same.

--
Bottom line, the movie never excels at anything, except maybe CGI. It's a decent movie, I think fans of the character will love it, but other than that, it's way too overhyped

Aquaman's promotional material would have you believe that it's a big dumb dudebro superhero flick from 2003, but that's not entirely true.

I was ready to write it off 5 minutes in, but then a freaking Sigur Rós song started playing to beautiful imagery and something just clicked. From then on forward Aquaman got more and more enjoyable. It has a charming and playful spirit of adventure, packed with relentless action, set-pieces and locations (enough to fill an entire Tv season) and James Wan's inventive direction is wonderfully off the charts. All the visuals and Amber Heard in her white desert rose outfit are simply S T U N N I N G!

While the dialogue is atrocious and there's Pitbull's abominable Africa cover in the middle, I'm tempted to say that Aquaman has the potential to be this generation's The Mummy (1999).

I liked Aquamam it was big, colorful, fun and overall an enjoyable DC superhero movie however it did have some significant flaws.

I can say that Aquamam was DC’s most ambitious movie to date and they nailed most. The first act of the movie is pretty solid you get some backstory on Author Curry, some nice foundation for the plot and interesting interactions between Aquamam and the villain Black Manta earlier on which the movie does a good job of making you understand his motivations for hating Aquamam and wanting to kill him and Makes Aquamam reconsider some of his actions regarding Black Manta which was some nice writing.

The second act of the movie was surprisingly the weakest just when the story was about to kick into gear the movie gets goofy I mean characters like Mera and Aquaman become cartoony and silly as the movie’s attempts to make you laugh becomes forced and awkward I mean there is literally toilet humor in this movie. It looked like two different people were directing the movie compared to the first half of the movie. Even characters like Black Manta became campy with him saying some weird dialogue. I wouldn’t say the second act is terrible but compared to the first act of the movie it’s just not as good.Luckily the movie comes into focus in the last third of the movie with some very good action, compelling story and surprisingly great CGI throughout the movie and some of the best I’ve seen in a long while.

The best characters in the movie were undoubtedly Aquaman and Mera. Jason Mamoa and Amber Heard had nice chemistry with each other even in the goofy scenes, Aquaman’s journey to becoming King was well done as the movie made you understand why he reluctant to be King and how Aquaman’s character grew throughout the movie especially with the help of Mera who also has a good mini arc in the movie and she had some badass scenes in the movie and again her best moments was with Aquaman as they went well together.

The villain Ocean Master played by Patrick Wilson was bland, I mean they could have done much more with him but as the movie went on he became just another generic bad guy. Earlier in the movie he had some decent reasons for wanting to have War with the surface and had some good interactions between him and Aquaman since their brothers but you never got to see more of that. Patrick Wilson’s performance wasn’t even bad it was actually decent but the story involving him didn’t have anything significant to do besides being evil because he is a bad guy.

Like I said earlier the visuals were incredible and very colorful especially with the scenes under water and the sea creatures i never knew James Wan was capable of directing a movie with such incredible visuals and great CGI so one thing you could say about Aquaman is that it was truly a spectacle at times. Atlantis and other sea kingdoms looked pretty good and contributed to the story well however sometimes these under water kingdoms like Atlantis felt empty at times I mean it looked interesting but you never got to see more of it besides action scenes and water battles which was kind of disappointing. The action was also very good again the visuals helped make the action good at times especially the final battle it wasn’t the best thing ever but it was very nice.

The story is pretty solid and Aquaman’s journey is interesting as he deals with responsibilities he doesn’t want to have but he grows over time into a hero and despite being campy at times the movie has some pretty funny scenes so that’s another plus.So I enjoyed Aquaman it’s DC best movie since Wonder Woman not as great but still a pretty good movie with a solid story, great CGI and visuals and characters despite a bland villain and silly second act. Hope this continues for DC movies.

The reason all the dumb stuff worked for me was because that's what it was trying to be. And Jason Momoa made it work. He was just kind of being himself. And normally these movies don't work because they go too heavy with the CGI and not enough on story and dialogue. But this might be the best looking movie I have ever seen. All the scenes underwater looked incredible. And I loved the trident fights. This movie is entertaining and a lot of fun. And it does have characters with a lot of history and background. First of all, the world is beautiful. The movie has some great shots of earth and Atlantis has a great and bright color scheme. The costumes and vehicles look rather silly though. When I saw very serious looking men on giant seahorses, I could not stop myself from laughing all the time. The hat of Ocean Master, which he wears at the end of the flick, is also very weird looking. I thought the world was very creative and fascinating, but my thought about the creativeness changed when I did my research. I have never read any DC comic, so I did not know much about the world of Aquaman. It turned out all the things I thought were creative, were already made in the comics.

The story of Aquaman is bad. The start is very good, but too short for the quality it has. The flick is obviously based on the legend of king Arthur, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes the plot predictable
The movie focusses on the wrong things, according to me. The beginning is far too good for the time it has in the movie. Black Manta is a very interresting character, so it is a pitty he is pushed to the side and the relationship between Arthur (Aquaman) and Mera only conclude in cliché moments.
My number one problem with this movie is that every time something interesting is happening, an explosion occurs and a villian ruins it with an action scene. This happens almost all the time in the middle of the flick, but not at the end. That is because the end is all action and no emotion whatsoever.

The last thing I want to mention are the numerous spoilers in the promotianal campaign. The literal ending is on the poster and in the trailers. All of this results in a very predictable movie which pays too much attention to the wrong aspects with a beautiful world and silly costumes.

Aquaman is probably the lamest most mock-able superhero ever, something which I feel James Wan was well aware of because this film is one of the most coolest-looking, over-the-top extravagant pieces of nerd masochism I have seen in a long while. There are people riding sea horses and sharks equipped with laser beams!

But in order to reduce the mockery of this "fish-man", Wan gave Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) a really manly personality. He is chill, sarcastic and its easy to connect with him through his human personality, a perfect contrast to the Arian Atlanteans. I also like the way in which this film succeeds in justifying the motives of their villains: particularly, The Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Sure, the revenge plot is a bit cliche like a few things in these film, but the fact that we actually see Aquaman leaving his father to die and not just hearing it through the prism of the villain, gives a certain power to it. I actually felt a bit bad for the poor guy.

One thing DC does not manage to pull off perfectly, though, is the identity of their films. There are parts in which it is truly dark and dramatic, and nearly every action scene starts with an unexpected over-the-top explosion. These moments are sometimes interrupted by funny comments and situations a-la-Marvel, but not all stick. And even if most do, they do not manage to blend together. Rather than being part of a continuous plot flow, DC stops the flow to tell a joke or two, then they get back to it.

While I could do with a few less fish look-a-like ships, I love just how abrasive and in-your-face everything is. For all its modern and visual awesomeness, this film has an old-school personality. There is a bit of predictability and lack of depth and identity struggle, but through it all, it can be really enjoyable.

Decent entry to the superhero genre, Wan gets the most out of the cast, amazing cgi and action. The movie hurtles along at breakneck speed and is a little over the top at times. It doesn't take itself too seriously and benefits from that unlike BvS.

Recomendada.

While I didn't totally buy the chemistry between Mera and Aquaman, Amber Heard and Jason Momoa bring charm to the roles that was really lacking with all of the other DCEU castings. The action has substantially improved with wide angles and no shaky cam CGI messes, which is one thing that had to improve in terms of filmmaking. One thing I really enjoyed about this movie was that this felt like an actual director was at the helm and the studio didn't come in and interfere halfway through production. One thing that this movie provides is a good starting blueprint for WB to how they need to handle their movies in the DCEU going forward. All they have to do is bring on confident directors, let them have control of how their movie gets made, and the studio just needs to back off and let the creative process go and allow the product of the film to be made. Aquaman was a fun action/comic book movie and puts the DCEU on the right track for the future, by no means the caliber of the better MCU movies, but a great place to go after seeing the fun a good director and creativity can bring to the table. So when I found out that they were giving him a movie I was skeptical, not only because of the source material, but because BvS had just come out and the future of the DCEU was looking iffy. Then, they brought James Wan on board and things were starting to look up. Then Justice League happened and all hopes sort of vanished. Now the movie is out and what do I make of Aquaman? It’s the best DCEU movie in regards to its villains and action. While Wonder Woman still holds her place near the top, Aquaman has swum towards the surface and shows what happens when you let a filmmaker—who loves the comics—do what they please with a license. Aquaman is funny, heartfelt, and (censored) insane. Jason Momoa is perfect as a surfer bro, hardcore Aquaman. Amber Heard does a good job herself as Mera. Patrick Wilson does kill it as Ocean Master. Nicole Kidman is…Nicole Kidman—she’s good in everything, except Batman. Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, and Temuera Morrison all give their A-Game here and supply a good supporting cast. But who I felt stands out is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, who does a phenomenal job and should be commended for his work. Same with James Wan who through his directing and story, has steered the DCEU towards the path that it needs to go to. The action is insane, intense, and has a surprisingly amount of one-shot long takes with little shaky cam, so you can definitely see everything. Props to the cinematographer for puling it off. The music is also good and serves the movie. The CG is where the movie might take a hit. Considering how much is needed, the effects can be shoddy at some points and could take you out of the movie. I didn’t mind it as I was invested the whole time. The movie does also suffer from a few pacing issues and jokes that don’t land. The story itself is a bit iffy and predictable at times, but it does get the job done as Aquaman is an example of taking a character—a ridiculous character—giving him heart, and having fun with the world that he lives in. And this movie is that, it’s fun. I want to watch it, then watch it again, because it has such a high volume of rewatch ability. Is it a 10/10? No. But what it does have is the torch that will lead the way towards a better DCEU future. And I cannot wait for the sequel. Also Marry Poppins voices a Kraken. Expand

TL;DR - Great Story-line. So-So CGI. Way to many cliche's. Acting mostly sucks. Worth seeing, once.

First off, since I was a little squid Aquaman has always been my favorite superhero. I identified with the story-line and the ability to swim under water and talk to animals. From the original cartoons in the 60's, to the Patrick Duffy "Man from Atlantis" series in the 70's, to everything Justice League...I've seen everything Aquaman. So based on that alone, I knew the movie would entertain me, regardless. But they could have done so much better.

STORY-LINE (9/10): The story line is amazing, and that alone was worth watching the movie for. IMHO, the writer's did a great job there. It wasn't as deep as it could have gone, but it was more than enough for a first film. 9/10

CGI (6/10): While some of the CGI was pretty good, most of it seemed halfheartedly done - and very obvious. In my opinion, CGI should be seamless, preferably not even noticeable, and definitely not distracting. Almost every Facial CGI modification in this movie is "in-your-face" noticeable...and very distracting from the plot.

ACTING (5/10): While I like Jason Momoa as a person, and I had zero problem with him being Aquaman, he did not give his best performance here as an actor. Additionally, there were just WAY too many cliches in this film. Each time it happened, I was just thinking "was that really necessary? it did nothing but take away from the quality of the film.

So in summary, it's definitely worth seeing once for any Aquaman fan-boy...but I can't imagine wanting to watch this film a second time. Just not enough value there and the overall experience was MEH...

However, I can't say it's good, but some aspects of the movie are so bad and ridiculous they become funny and hilarious, that's why I'm giving this a positive rating because it kept me entertained.

The Good:
-Finally a DCEU movie that focuses on entertaining its audience and not on setting up ten thousand movies nor rushing twenty storylines in one movie. -It's silly and cheesy, with over-the-top acting and comic-book accurate suits that look ridiculous in live-action, but that's the point of the fun of this movie and doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes it better.

The Bad:
-Some CGI looked bad and most of the movie looks very over-saturated, just look at Amber Heard's red hair, in many scenes it looks so bright red it's awful.
-That cringeworthy cover of "Africa" by Toto from Pitbull, oh my God.

If this is the direction DC is going for with its Cinematic Universe, then i'm in. That's why Marvel movies are so beloved because even though they might not be good movies on their own, they are fun and entertaining, which is something that I hope DC keeps doing with their next movies.

In the past few years, DC’s movies were more like a hit and miss after Justice League’s under-performance with fans and critics divided over the future of the DCEU.
But with Aquaman, DC fans gained some hope after all. AQUAMAN is a fun thrilling ride, with fascinating visuals and great action sequences (the chase scene) that worked pretty well with the camera work!

James Wan widens the DCEU with a new underwater world to explore some great characters we see for the first time on the big screen. Jason Momoa’s take on Arthur Curry was bad-ass and he kicks ass with a charismatic touch of his own proving he’s worthy of the role. As for Amber Heard, she gives an excellent performance as Queen Mera and her chemistry with Jason was really compelling. Would’ve liked to see more of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta as he was a bit underused and his story didn’t really serve the main plot of the movie, but still looking forward to see more of him as Aquaman’s archenemy in the near future.

The writing of this movie was a lot of the time clunky and some of the dialogue sounded too cheesy. Plus, the tone of the movie was super light-hearted and it’s very clear that James Wan tried to make it different than previous movies and drove away from the usual dark tone. A lot of the comedy one-liners didn’t land and were a bit forced.

The score of the movie is pretty good but the use of some pop songs was really buggy, out of place, and should’ve been avoided given that the main theme of the movie is spectacular. Thanks to Rupert Gregson-Williams!

The horror aspect of James Wan was so satisfying and was pretty much clear based on his former experience with the horror genre, pushing the visuals to new a level in this epic underwater opera!
Unfortunately, the final act of the movie was filled with battle scenes that were all over the place and too noisy with too much going on underwater.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aguahombre is the best DC movie made since Wonder Woman, which means almost nothing...

In general, it feels like Aquaman suffers from a content problem. His source material is pretty weak, so any adaptation of that material will either be forced to deviate too far or follow too closely. The biracial storyline is pretty prominent, which, as Wife puts it, is a signal for the evil characters, who exclusively call Aquaman a half-breed mongrel (similar warm and fuzzy feelings from the short film in Incredibles 2, Bao). But beyond that innovation, and some humanizing of the Black Manta character (who seems generally pretty bankrupt), there’s not a lot of substance to this two and a half hour romp through the ocean.

There are a lot of Cricket Rules (esp the “mission creep” trope) from the very beginning that get in the way of the Bad Guy doing whatever he wants to destroy the land people from the very beginning. Even despite all the rules, he almost immediately goes about sending massive tsunami to destroy coastal cities and later when negotiations fail, straight up assassinates his rivals with no repercussions.

On the hero’s side of things, Aquaman, as brother’s Wife comments, isn’t really interested in the “second half of life” story of its hero–the Jungian story of his journey. Instead, the film is bogged down by jarring flashbacks of single moment lessons that Aquaman learns as a child with no gesture toward development or reflection afterwards, which gives off a kind of Slumdog Millionaire vibe, like Aquaman is literally relying on twenty second clips of memory to make vital decisions in the present day. Maybe the most poignant development for Aquaman has to do with his realization concerning Black Manta. But the whole Black Manta thing itself is a little weird. He seems like a weirdly small secondary problem compared to the impending doom of the earth, easily dispatched after a few jumped roofs and some cracked bottles of wine Sicilian wine.

Mera’s wooing to accept the legitimacy of land-dwelling includes just two points of reference, the Sahara desert and a quaint town in coastal Sicily. Their travels never take them to the kinds of places on earth that make her question land-dweller’s lifestyles in the first place. Mera has some legitimate concerns about the downsides of consumerism that are never addressed. Also, the ease with which she’s able to find Aquaman in his childhood hometown makes one wonder why he wasn’t surrounded and murdered much earlier by the king’s goons.

The script is unevenly funny–sometimes intentional, as with the “fishman not fishboy” bit, and sometimes less so, as with the “Sea Master” bit, which sounded like a BDSM game than a real title people could roll with.

On superhero cultural amnesia: Aquaman definitely knows about Aquaman, but there’s a definite weird blindspot to the film where he acknowledges that the Justice League has just finished defeating a different threat to humanity together, but now no one can be found to lend him a hand in his life or death struggle against his half-brother. Not an (similarly) indestructible Superman or the world’s fastest man or Wonder Woman or the Batman can spare a moment to check in and see if he needs a hand.

While we’re talking about strange missteps, the beast guarding the trident that’s been missing for “aeons” seems shocked that Aquaman can understand her, even though she’s delivering some pretty select roasts of his family history and legitimacy. And once he explains the situation she backs off pretty quickly and tells him she’s sort of just back up and the trident itself will kill him if he’s not the true heir to the throne, so what’s with that redundancy? Why didn’t the trident let any of the ladies attempt to claim it for the decades that she/they were trapped there?

Also, pretty sure there’s an octopus playing drums at some point during a fight scene that we’re all just going to remain quiet on?

Villain is stronger than the hero: that seems wrong on two fronts. Black Manta is at a number of disadvantages even after his upgrades. The half-brother king breaks his own mother’s quintident early on but after Aquaman proves that some backwards skeleton king from two thousand years ago doesn’t melt his flesh off and he wants it more, Aquaman is able to best him in land-based combat.

Lastly, on the innovative powers front: solo comic book movies usually use the development of one’s powers as a stand in for their emotional growth, but Aquaman doesn’t really do much power growing in this film. He can swim fast, he has super strength, and literally nothing does more than stop him for a little, so it’s hard to see space for new powers or a new take on old powers, really.

Aquaman is worth it to see if only to watch Jason Momoa shirtless for a little bit, a guilty pleasure that will tide us all over until it’s time for 80s Wonder Woman to set a new record.

Decent movie for DCEU when you think the other atrocities they made, most notably Suicide Squad.
It has dumb and cringe moments, plotholes, unnecessary scenes just as almost all other superhero films. The scene where Arthur and Mera eats rose is example, it was not funny and forced.
The tools they used to find Trident could be used for only one time. But when Arthur goes to the place where Kraken (or whatever the giant monster) is protecting the trident, there were many skeletons of people who tried to obtain the Trident previously. How did they come here? And did arthur steal the King Atlan's suit when he get the trident? That scene was...weird and unexplained.
Visually stunning, and the CGI is well done. Other than that.. meh

In any case, you're entertained for the time being, but a lot is missing for a really good film festival. The story has good moments but is often presented too lengthy. The staging in many places is just too kitschy, and there are weak comedic passages, although I would have expected it to be worse.

Overall, part 1 has been on the right track and part 2 can now take it to a good to very good level.

I had never seen the comics, cartoons or the weird GameCube game. When this movie's trailer dropped I thought it was just a random superhero on whom DC is making a movie, like Plastic Man or Karate Kid (the DC one, not the popular franchise one). And so I walked in completely blind for this movie. And I'd say this may be a beautiful adaptation of the superhero, but definitely far from perfect.

Unlike most DCEU movies which always have a lot going on, Aquaman has literally nothing going on. Or so it seems, because in this movie he has to discover his legacy, find his mother, stop his brother from attacking land dwellers, save himself from Black Manta who wants to take his revenge from Aquaman for having let his father die and also manage his relationship with his father, step-father, brother and Mera. And in spite of having so much this movie has a ton of breathing content, because each of these things barely last for 10 minutes.

The visuals are absolutely gorgeous. The characters travel all across from the stormy lighthouse, the colourful Atlantis to the Sahara Desert and Sicily. The fight scenes are all well choreographed although they always begin with interrupting the dialogues.Depending on which character we look at, they are somewhat similar to their comic book counterparts. The sense of humour is, well, at least it's better than the 2017 Justice League.

I was interested in the movie only because of its visual effects. And I got that. So I have no complaints. This movie was satisfactory, but not really great. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, it just won't be as interesting as the first time. It's pretty surprising to me that this is the highest grossing DC movie of all time, even though it literally had nothing substantial to offer. I hope they add a little more depth to the story in the sequel, because if Aquaman is really a legendary character then they have to make him look like one, and that won't come by just adding visual spectacles.

The story is flimsy, it's all just visuals, really nice visuals sometimes, but without meaning or soul. The acting is so-so, with Lady Mera really out of it. Maybe some people will really enjoy this movie, but for me the visuals were the only thing that were actually worth watching.

Visually appealing with a pretty solid cast but it gets off to a slow start and it doesn't really take off until the final act. It's a solid movie, entertaining at times for sure, but it could have been a lot better.

I had to come up for air because you had no chance to think/reflect on anything before something else happened. All of the attempts at emotion were lost because a few seconds later something was being destroyed or a fight or a battle was happening. The deepest character in the entire movie was a giant squid/beast.

The people behind the film seem to have acknowledged Momoa's lack of emotional depth early on in production and banked big on just moving the story along while fitting in as much filler to prevent any sort of reason to rely on it.

People who gush about the movie really were just looking for something to distract them, and distract it does well. The rest of us will leave floundered at the shallowness of this film.

Though it relies too heavily on CGI, the effects are done wonderfully, the battles are epic, the problem is the film doesn't know if it should be serious or just fun. The moments it tries to be serious it becomes evident that it goes beyond the capability of both main characters. If James Wan had decided to make the film more self-aware I think the cheesy dialogue would have worked better. Basically the film isn't Batman and Robin bad, but it tries hard to get there. Expand

Sure, the same can be said about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially the destruction aspect, but at least with most of the Marvel films, we've been able to closely follow, grow, and develop with most of those characters over the past decade, as it seems as though the filmmakers of those films actually take the time to further flesh out their heroes and characters and develop interesting themes that take precedence over the visuals and destruction aspect (such as Black Panther for example.) As expected, for the most part, this film continued DC's streak of action-heavy yet ultimately underwhelming and disappointing films, as it follows so many familiar tropes from previous superhero movies (the brother rivalry in this reminded me all too much of Thor, and fighting for the throne of course reminded me too much of Black Panther from earlier just this year.) And yes, there is plenty of destruction, but I will admit that the visuals in this were remarkably impressive and colorful most of the time, which I found somewhat refreshing, considering how lackluster I found Justice League's effects to be from last year. Jason Momoa's also a perfect fit for the titular hero, and brings great fun and humor to the character throughout. Overall, there's fun to be had at times in addition to great visuals and a worthwhile performance from Momoa and the rest of the cast, but nothing really new or inspired in terms of story, which for me is to be expected of DC movies lately unfortunately. To sum it up in a sentence: fun but forgettable, just like all the DC movies lately. Expand

I had a lot of more fun watching Aquaman than I expected on my 55 inch 4k HDR 5.1 setup. The cast do their job well here delivering the characters emotional beats with gusto throughout Aquaman's oddly paced longer-than-average running time. For maximum viewing pleasure I recommend leaving your brain at the door! Despite the negatives, this film has heart and so would definitely watch a sequel if that ever happens.

"Permission to come aboard"

Permission granted.

While not best superhero movies of all time, but for DC shake, it's the best movie behind 'Wonder Women'.

Jason Momoa and Amber Heard are both enjoyable and bring a dynamic chemistry into their characters. They honestly carry this movie.

James Wan direction is the strongest part of the movie. The action scenes is thrilling and exciting with the camera sweeping across the actions scenes - never missing a punch, kick, and blast. Wan proves his one of the best filmmakers of all time, not just for horror, but for action as well.

Patrick Wilson plays an interesting villain with a sibling rivalry with Aquaman, but Wilson makes him stand out from being bland. Also, Willem Dafoe riding a shark is something special.

Some of the CGI looked a bit noticeable, especially during the under water scenes with the characters talking or moving about. However, the rest of the movie itself is colorful and brings Atlanteans alive.

Aquaman is a good superhero movie from DC. It's a definite improvement over their previous garbage movies (Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman and Justice League), but it's not as good as Wonder Woman.

Jason Momoa looks nothing like the Aquaman from the comics, but he brings humor and some laid back, "brawn-with-a-heart-of-gold" attitude. Momoa's Aquaman is like a random dude enjoying life's little pleasures.

The film tries to be more humorous than the other darker DC movies and approach Marvel's quasi-comical style, but the writers' attempts at making jokes mostly fall flat. I'll never forget the tough guys gang with the pink smartphone asking for a selfie with Aquaman. Yikes!

The script has a few good core ideas but overall is a complicated mess. There is so much going on, too much backstory and legends thrown into the mix, and so many characters walking around, that the plot quickly loses its focus and characters don't have enough room to develop. The movie's story is at its best when talking about marine pollution, the desire of underwater people for revenge, and the strange relationship between half-brothers Aquaman and Oceanmaster, but the writers decided to also branch the story in a King Arthur and Excaliber-kind of direction because Aquaman's human name is, ehm, Arthur. Well, at least it's not nearly as bad as the infamous "Martha" moment in Batman v Superman. And if all that wasn't enough, here is a large scale underwater battle (rivaling those of the Lord of the Rings movies) to top it off. In Aquaman's first movie!

Black Manta was a highlight of the movie for me, but DC sidelined Aquaman's arch-enemy for the eventual sequel.

After DC released a bunch of horrible movies, Wonder Woman and Aquaman have vastly improved upon their predecessors. Will DC be able to keep up with their upcoming movies like Shazam, Flash, and others? Only time will tell.

Go see it in IMAX 3D. If anything,it’ll make you moan in absolute joy whenever they inquadrate on King Orm’s majestic presence. Onto the review.

Huh....You know what was probably the most impressive thing about Aquaman, the new movie directed by Horror veteran James Wan? The fact that it easily tricks you into thinking it’s a great experience.
Because, while it is stunning (to a halt),Aquaman is just an aggressively decent movie if you take out the production design behind it. The movie is fantastic whenever it doesn’t fill the screen with CG Splooge,or,as I’d like to call it,CG P***.
CG that it’s just used as a gimmick because the movie’s afraid to admit the total buffoonery of its Script (written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, who was fresh off Venom),lacking any real dialogue or emotion onto a story that feels like it’s not playing with its Potential Cards.
But there is something else I can praise besides the CG,and that is Orm,Arthur’s brother (played by Patrick Wilson). Not their motivations, but the acting behind it. Wilson feels like he’s having fun playing this character...In a theatrical presentation. Not a movie, but a Theatrical Presentation. A great one at that. Even if,again, the motivation is something we saw a million times (angry brother wants to take the throne because blah blah...Whatever).
And the rest is just...fine. Nothing mind-numbing or bad. Just fine.
The soundtrack has enough cues to be a score of its own instead of this big rip-off of Thor Ragnarok (since they share the same style of 80s Synthy vibes and Cinematic Orchestra mixed together). The cinematography is something,I think, since there were some moments where it feels John Woo-esque,in that they would slow the footage to try and make us feel something for the sake of the script. I just mentioned it because whenever they shoot a scene with Orm is beautiful to look at. Even more so if you’ll see it in IMAX 3D,because man,OH MAN,if the audience was moaning hard at that theater during the epic shot in the Finale.
And again, the CG is great. I'm just sad it was used as a distraction to that horrible script. But still,go see Aquaman. If anything, you'll get a kick out of it more than I did. Just… don't overhype it as this colossal Box office success. Got it? Yeah? Great!

Frankly I wasn't really interested in seeing this film. That's why I take so long to do it.

Aquaman is a film that feels exactly like what Batman V Superman and Justice League wanted to be. A film too big and ambitious for its own good in order to try to reach the size of what Marvel achieved with more time and in more elaborate order, but I must say that it had a little more success in trying to channel that ambition.

Not only happy with almost erasing the events of Justice League, Aquaman tries to cover too much and even with the inclusion of his two most famous villains it shows how desperate the studio was to achieve something big, noisy and sufficiently full of CGI action in order to attract the masses. Let's be honest, if this film had failed at the box office, that would have been the end of the DC film universe.

I will not deny that it manages to entertain, but it's devastatingly unforgettable.
Jason Momoa overacts too much and the truth is that you can tell he's trying too hard. Charisma must be natural and in him it doesn't feel that way at all.

Personally, this film did nothing for me.

But I have to say it and just as a small note because I don't usually comment on this but Amber Heard, Jesus **** Christ!!!!

James Wan does his best to try and save this film from becoming another DCEU box office bomb.

The script for Aquaman is mediocre and brings nothing new to table. It's full of goofy humor and slapstick gags. The story for Aquaman feels like a mix between "Black Panther" and "Raiders Of The Lost Ark". The cast does everything they can with the given script, and you can tell everyone is having a very fun time on set and is truly happy to be a part of this film.

As for the character of Aquaman; Jason Mamoa really takes The Protector Of The Deep and makes it his own. He is full of energy and charisma, not to mention he just looks damn awesome on screen.

The realashionship between Arthur and Mera is very sweet, although their romance feels very out of place.

Patrick Wilson does a good job as always, and it's good to know James Wan always has place for him in his films.

The inclusion of Black Manta feels very forced, and his helmet looks like a bumbling Power Ranger villain. He would have worked much better as the antogonist for the sequel.

By far the crown jewel of Aquaman is its VFX and Costumes. The underwater sequence looks absolutely stunning and realistic, and the costume department manages to perfectly translate the costumes from Aquaman Lore from the page to the silver screen.
