Despite suffering from the critical failure and box office flop of Justice League one year ago, DC Extended Universe continue to move forward with the sixth instalment featuring Aquaman in his very first solo movie after making a cameo appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and officially debut in Justice League.

One year after the events of Justice League, Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Momoa) stops a group of pirates led by Jesse Kane from stealing a Russian submarine in the middle of the ocean. After fighting briefly against Jesse and his son, David Kane, he left Jesse to die for his crimes while David swears revenge on him.

In Atlantis, King Orm/Ocean Master (Wilson), the half-brother of Aquaman, is planning to declare war on the surface world for polluting the ocean. Mera (Heard) finds Arthur to convince him to stop him from starting a war. Arthur reluctantly goes with her to Atlantis and meets up with his old mentor, Nuidis Vulko.

In order to stop King Orm, Vulko tells Arthur to find King Atlan’s Trident, so that he can reclaim his rightful place as the King of Atlantis. Suddenly, they got ambush by King Orm’s men and they managed to escape except Arthur. During captivity, Arthur challenges his half-brother to a duel but he lost. Mera immediately rescue Arthur and both of them escape from Atlantis. They begin their journey to find King Atlan’s Trident while King Orm hires David Kane to kill Arthur and provides him with Atlantean armour and weapons. With that, he becomes Black Manta and pursues his vendetta.

I have good news for all DC fans. This movie is totally awesome next to Wonder Woman and better than any other instalments. It was way better than I thought. What I like about the movie are the CGIs and visual effects. The CGIs and visual effects in this movie are very well done and they are very incredibly stunning, beautiful and magnificent. The visual effects artists definitely deserved to be praised for their hard work efforts. It was so good that I feel like I’m watching a movie in an oceanarium.

The performances of the cast are amazing especially for Jason Momoa, Amber Heard and Patrick Wilson. They were really awesome in their role and they totally nailed it. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman have done a great job too. Once again, James Wan has done it again with his direction and successfully redeem the franchise. I only hope that this trend will continue in future instalments.

The story is good and it was really fun which I enjoyed a lot. For better experience, you can try watching the movie in IMAX. Not much of a downfall in this movie but I felt that David Kane/Black Manta was underused in this movie. Hopefully, he will play a big role in the sequel or in the other future instalments. I am looking forward to the next instalment in the franchise. There are no post-credits scene but do stay back for a mid-credits scene and after that, you may leave.

The inexplicable amount of high ratings and praise for this movie has me seriously questioning reality.

The script is atrocious, acting is just so-so and the writers clearly had no idea what kind of movie they wanted to make. Is it a revenge film, maybe a little National Treasure style adventure, half-hearted romance, maybe a heroes journey? Sprinkle the laughably bad DC action scenes in and you've got yourself this movie. If what you want is the Fast and Furious drivel , but underwater and with horrendous wigs then this is for you.

While I didn't totally buy the chemistry between Mera and Aquaman, Amber Heard and Jason Momoa bring charm to the roles that was really lacking with all of the other DCEU castings. The action has substantially improved with wide angles and no shaky cam CGI messes, which is one thing that had to improve in terms of filmmaking. One thing I really enjoyed about this movie was that this felt like an actual director was at the helm and the studio didn't come in and interfere halfway through production. One thing that this movie provides is a good starting blueprint for WB to how they need to handle their movies in the DCEU going forward. All they have to do is bring on confident directors, let them have control of how their movie gets made, and the studio just needs to back off and let the creative process go and allow the product of the film to be made. Aquaman was a fun action/comic book movie and puts the DCEU on the right track for the future, by no means the caliber of the better MCU movies, but a great place to go after seeing the fun a good director and creativity can bring to the table. It manages to do what I thought were not possible and edges out Wonder Woman as the worst DC film made.

Calling it a DC film is the primary misnomer. It effectively isn't. What it genuinely is, is a Disney movie with out of place murders, profanity and even honest to God Disney Easter eggs buried within. Such as the Goofy "Whaahahahooey" falling scream and referencing the Disney film Pinocchio. It goes shot for shot emulating tried and true Disney formulas and constantly tries to allude to Disney through the whole overly drawn out affair. It takes the worst elements of Disney super hero films and produces a bland wannabe copy absent anything resembling artistic integrity. Its big budget Hollywood summer blockbuster schlock, released in the winter.

Even if you can get past the Disney fan service, the film is simply not good. A ridiculous and forever irredeemable character, a sad rogues gallery, tired plot riddled with errors and outright lack of thought, devoid of originality or anything thought provoking. It spends its run time trying so hard to over the top itself with its extensive overly neon CGI that it feels like the illegitimate love child of a B list MCU character and a Fast and furious film. Which to no surprise its Director was previously involved in the F&F franchise.

I give WB kudos however for resisting the urge to pull another Disney trope and have either licensed or got the rights to contemporize the 1968 song "I want to marry a light house keeper" for the sound track.

This film is so bad that it actually manages to set the whole genre of superhero films back and that is with how much damage Disney has already done to any legitimacy in film that super hero films like Blade, Logan and Deadpool were actually able to muster.

Wonder Women was a above average action movie but Aquaman really brings everything together. While Wonder Women would be a better action movie than Aquaman, Aquaman does a good job while bringing elements the other films lacked. It has great and cheesy humor, brings the science fiction to the screen more than just a comic book Esq way, and it takes itself less seriously while still bringing the notion that everything is on the line in a more marvel fashion. Huge fan of Jason Momoa and thought he did a fantastic job portraying the underrated superhero and Amber Heard exceeded my expectations too. The plot wasn't original, the pacing was offensive and the ending was a choice. Its not all lost I suppose, its big budget was evident even if it did take the form of cheap, unimpressive costumes, its CGI is no blade runner 2049 but it was enough to keep your eyes from wandering off screen which at times I wanted them to. Also aquamans mum must be great friends with the wasps mother in ant man because they have very similar life experiences being thought dead in a presumably unsurvivable location, not original, or interesting and thats me talking about the first time I saw this storyline. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an avid movie goer I am insulted that the studio even put this movie out. There is absolutely no way the director and producer have ever seen an actual movie and Jason Mamoa should be ashamed to have put his name on this. I walked out of the theater after 30 minutes and told the manager they have a duty to not allow guests to spend their money on this movie. As to what caused me to walk out? Here's some of the details...... SPOILERS AHEAD.....
The movie begins as an awful throwback to Falcon Crest type soap format with Nicole Kidman CGI'd to look young and as hard as it was to make it through this first part I was hoping the action would at least make up for it. Not the case. Jump to Aquaman jumping on board a Russian (yes Russian) submarine and the scene couldn't have been more of an intro to a gay porn where he lands, swishes his hair back, close up on face, steam in the back ground, and looks at the camera and says "Permission to come aboard?"

Seriously? The following scenes where the actors are trying to fight/shoot/struggle at whatever the antogonist is were painful to watch. Broken editing, poor camera angles, poor sound editing and music. Its just the worst. When I found myself wishing I was watching a Nicolas Cage movie that was when I told my girlfriend we're walking out. This is one of the worst films I have seen since Baywatch and its even worse than that.

Is Aquaman perfect? Of course not. Is it a fun filled romp? Heck yes it is. Jason Momoa was a great casting choice. Aquaman is a campy hero. He isn't the first hero I'd pick to tell a compelling story. Still, this is by far DC's best film. It is better than Wonder Woman (you know the last 20 minutes of WW was garbage). The visuals in this film are amazing. Momoa is fun, and Amber Heard's Mera is a badass in her own right. Just a very enjoyable film.

Aquaman is a very entertaining and self-contained movie that breathes more life into the DCEU. Gone are the overly serious tones of previous DC flicks. This movie required no prior knowledge and everything was explained without being condescending to the audience. The action was solid and believable. The acting was great and the characters all lived up to the hype. This is how you build a franchise, I like that DC is now focusing on standalone films instead of going straight for the big team up. It shows maturity on the part of the studio. Aquaman was never really a hugely popular character to begin with but this movie succeeds in making him cool to an entire generation of new fans. Once he was the most overlooked and ridiculed member of the Justice League but now he may just be many people's favorites. I don't understand the level of criticism towards this film from various critics. It's like they want DC to fail. If this was a Marvel movie they would have us believing its the best thing since sliced bread. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a HUGE favor and go check it out. Expand

Aquaman is directed by James Wan, his very first superhero movie, screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, and starring Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson and Nicole Kidman.
Story by Geoff Johns, James Wan and will Beall... The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime--one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be a king.

This review will be spoiler-free, because I don't want to ruin this movie to you, guys...
I really don't know where to start, guys... Let's start with the direction.. James Wan's first superhero movie as its director is Aquaman, so I was concerned to see him failing, because we're used to see him mostly in horror movie like The Conjuring Universe, Saw and Insidious.. so yeah I didn't expect him to make a great job with the direction, in fact I was blown away of his amazing job with this movie, especially with the action scenes, he made every single scene epic, and breathtaking, thanks also goes to the crew of the CGI which I'm gonna talk about later on. James Wan did some mistakes with the direction as I predicted when I first heard that he will direct this movie, he actually tried to make some jump-scares in this movie, for no reason I don't get why.. let me tell you how... Most of the NORMAL scenes, when people are talking or doing anything but fighting, especially when they are in a house or somewhere closed, they always ended with someone exploding the wall or anything unexpectedly just like horror movies, and that's what I was afraid of! That's my only issue with the direction.

Let's move to the flawless CGI!!!! Every scene of the underwater world was was well made, by the CGI and the direction as I said above, it's amazing.. I can't find any proper word to say about it.. it was fascinating, i was super-entertained by how well done the CGI of this movie is!! They weren't afraid of making that much of Atlantis, like Godzilla did, I don't want to compare movies, but Godzilla was too afraid to make that much of scenes of him, but Aquaman took that risk and they nailed it!

Also the performances were very talented by everyone, Jason Momoa is amazing as Aquaman as he was in Justice League, and maybe more! Amber Heard is badass as Mera... Patrick Wilson is an amazing villain and I loved him as King Orm and I can't wait to see him again in other DC movies!

Let's move to my biggest flaw of this movie, and it's a random choice.. I don't know but this might have some spoiler for you... There's a scene when Aquaman and Mera were fighting CREATURES in a boat, and in this scene Arthur AKA Aquaman said a very random line, that these creatures are from the bottom of the sea so they fear the light, so he opens a random box to find a LIGHT SOURCE and he scares the creatures with it... This scene was so random, the line of Aquaman can be forgiven, but the random choice can't be!
I tried to make it spoiler-free as I could and I highlighted some keywords, which who watched the movie will understand what I'm talking about.

So for those who want to know if Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse is better than Aquaman or not, my opinion is yeah, it's better than Aquaman, but it also depends on what you want to see, if you wanna see an epic, old fashioned way superhero movie, so Aquaman is your movie, but if you wanna see a surprising and with a very powerful story, so Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse is your movie. Anyways I really loved Aquaman and I'm gonna give it an A!

Alright, guys, and thanks for reading my review, and if you liked it, you can click on my name up above to see all of my reviews. Look forward for my up coming reviews...

Arthur (Jason Momoa)In a shocking turn of events, DC Comics made a great movie that isn't about Batman! Finally, with Aquaman, fans get the type of movie they've always wanted from DC, and I see big things for the future of this franchise. Arthur (Jason Momoa) is the son of the Queen of Atlantis and a mortal man. He was born with extraordinary abilities, but not with the motivation to use them. After his mother was exiled and presumably killed by Atlantis, Arthur wants nothing to do with his people, until a world wide threat forces him to take action. The story here is the same as your basic comic themed film, saving the world while trying to get the girl, but what makes Aquaman really stand out is it's incredible special effects. Seeing as many films as I do, it's difficult to impress me with a little bit of CGI, but this film had some of the best effects I have ever seen! Even if this was a silent film the sheer beauty and magic of this underwater world would still be breath-taking. Jason Momoa stars in his biggest role to date and this guy absolutely killed it. My biggest fear going into this film was that it would be too cartoonish and led by a newcomer, not a great combination, but Momoa is terrific both his personality and in his ability to put on one hell of a fight scene. As for the cartoonish part, there is a little bit of that and it was a turn off, but you do need to pander to the young crowd a film like this is likely to draw. For my money, this is the best DC Comics film since the Dark Knight. I'm not the biggest Superhero fan and I absolutely loved this movie from beginning to end. The two and half hours literally flew by and in the end I was still craving more. I can't wait to see what's next for Aquaman. Expand

The story is also a paint-by-numbers superhero tale, and honestly I'm starting to get a little tired of the same ol' thing every time. It's not absolutely horrible, but I don't think I'll ever have a desire to watch this one again. Expand

It's not nearly as good as Wonder Woman or Man of Steel but with that being said, it's still a pretty good movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well.... I've had a lot of feelings about Aquaman before and after I saw it. When I first saw the trailer, I thought "Nah, this isn't going to be good." As the film kept getting more and more hyped up, I was actually getting more interested. Especially after it came out, because the reviews weren't too bad and people around me were saying great things about it. So, here's my perspective. And this is coming from someone who has not seen very many DC films. It was..okay. But, now that they have confirmed a sequel, I am interested in seeing it. I didn't like how the main plot was around his half brother's revenge. I was much more interested in the Black Manta, who is a huge part in the DC Universe, yet in only a small portion of this movie. When you're watching the beginning, it even makes you think that this will be what the movie is going to be all about. But of course, just like many movies are doing nowadays, they use this as a cheap cash grab to confirm a sequel. So yes, that is why I plan on seeing the second, since this villain was much more appealing. Another bummer for me was I didn't think this movie was very funny. Sure, it's more of an action/thriller than it is a comedy, but there were so many unfunny jokes made that I found myself rolling my eyes more than laughing. I love Jason Momoa, but he definitely had his moments with this. I also found Mara to be a pretty weak character, which really effected how I enjoyed the movie since she was a big part of it. I felt like there was nothing interested about her. In fact, I found her pretty boring. So, what did I like? Well, After about halfway through the movie where everything was pretty slow, it starts to pick up. Especially towards the end, this movie just looks fantastic. There are definitely some crappy CGI moments, but there are some awesome ones as well. Like I mentioned, I'm all in for the sequel, but that is mainly because of Black Manta. Without him, I honestly wouldn't have been interested. There are some tweaks they can work on, but I still see potential in this movie. Expand

Talking to fish? Riding around on giant seahorses? No wonder nobody takes him seriously. Therein lies the key to this film's success. Aquaman will never truly be seen as a dark, serious character like Batman. That's just not who he is. Much like Thor in the MCU, Aquaman works best as a fun, cheesy, superhero who is also a total badass. Instead of trying to convince us that Aquaman should be taken seriously, James Wan embraces the absurdity of the character, and the result is totally bonkers movie that's just pure fun to watch. The film's script is weak, but makes up for it with eye-popping CGI spectacle and absolutely gorgeous visuals that remind me of Blade Runner: 2049. The cast is great, especially Jason Momoa, who looks like he's having an absolute blast throughout the movie. Amber Heard's Mera has some pretty sweet fight scenes, and Willem Dafoe gets the rare opportunity to play a good guy as Vulko. Despite being over 2 hours long, the movie feels fast-paced, mainly because it's just one big, fun ride.

For the DCEU, this is a HUGE step in the right direction.

Aquaman suprised me at first, but it has the wrong priorities.

First of all, the world is beautiful. The movie has some great shots of earth and Atlantis has a great and bright color scheme. The costumes and vehicles look rather silly though. When I saw very serious looking men on giant seahorses, I could not stop myself from laughing all the time. The hat of Ocean Master, which he wears at the end of the flick, is also very weird looking. I thought the world was very creative and fascinating, but my thought about the creativeness changed when I did my research. I have never read any DC comic, so I did not know much about the world of Aquaman. It turned out all the things I thought were creative, were already made in the comics.

The story of Aquaman is bad. The start is very good, but too short for the quality it has. The flick is obviously based on the legend of king Arthur, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes the plot predictable
The movie focusses on the wrong things, according to me. The beginning is far too good for the time it has in the movie. Black Manta is a very interresting character, so it is a pitty he is pushed to the side and the relationship between Arthur (Aquaman) and Mera only conclude in cliché moments.
My number one problem with this movie is that every time something interesting is happening, an explosion occurs and a villian ruins it with an action scene. This happens almost all the time in the middle of the flick, but not at the end. That is because the end is all action and no emotion whatsoever.

The last thing I want to mention are the numerous spoilers in the promotianal campaign. The literal ending is on the poster and in the trailers. All of this results in a very predictable movie which pays too much attention to the wrong aspects with a beautiful world and silly costumes.

I know people want so much for DC getting a win, and Aquaman is imho the best cinematic current univ DC movie, but the movie is just mediocre.

Pros:
Momoa is a good casting choice and brings flair to the character. CGI are top notch and some of the scenes are visually stunning. There is a fight mid-movie which was excellently choreographed and shot. Writing is decent first half.

Cons:
Momoa and Amber have a few scenes in which he looks so bored and out of character. The story is bald in the second part. The reveal near the end with his mother is so far-fetched and takes away all the tension. Not only that but Aquaman's " I don't care" attitude makes it lack any tension. Last fight is exactly the opposite of the previous fight I mentioned in terms of quality. Mera and Aquaman relationship is forcibly written. The villain's plot is a joke (I'm not referring to the brother), if you take all his screen time out, the story would be exactly the same.

--
Bottom line, the movie never excels at anything, except maybe CGI. It's a decent movie, I think fans of the character will love it, but other than that, it's way too overhyped

Frankly I wasn't really interested in seeing this film. That's why I take so long to do it.

Aquaman is a film that feels exactly like what Batman V Superman and Justice League wanted to be. A film too big and ambitious for its own good in order to try to reach the size of what Marvel achieved with more time and in more elaborate order, but I must say that it had a little more success in trying to channel that ambition.

Not only happy with almost erasing the events of Justice League, Aquaman tries to cover too much and even with the inclusion of his two most famous villains it shows how desperate the studio was to achieve something big, noisy and sufficiently full of CGI action in order to attract the masses. Let's be honest, if this film had failed at the box office, that would have been the end of the DC film universe.

I will not deny that it manages to entertain, but it's devastatingly unforgettable.
Jason Momoa overacts too much and the truth is that you can tell he's trying too hard. Charisma must be natural and in him it doesn't feel that way at all.

Personally, this film did nothing for me.

But I have to say it and just as a small note because I don't usually comment on this but Amber Heard, Jesus **** Christ!!!!

Aquaman pulls off the visual aspect. Emotionally it's a mixed bag, many scenes were well done, but there were a few that felt like pure filler. I hear some people don't like the soundtrack, but I enjoyed it very much (for the most part), it's different from other superhero movies, and I think it was an excellent choice. Intellectually the movie barely hits surface level, there's not really anything to gain there. It certainly isn't revolutionary in any way, although I say that with an asterisk, because in recent years many movies have started to show great disrespect for the classic good versus evil story arc, as if it was to be avoided, as if cliché was a bad thing, as if exaggerated power and beauty was to be contempted rather than adored and loved, and extreme villainy was too simplistic. Aquaman doesn't care about that, it takes a page from LotR and fully embraces the heorism and villainousness, the strength and the weakness of its characters, and the design and lighting assist this by going hard with the clichés. I haven't seen such pure adoration for beauty and power to this extent on screen in many years. I've been missing it, and I want more of it, now more than ever. This doesn't mean there are no moral gray areas, there certainly are a few. Just don't expect a deeper look into the nature of man.
So overall I consider it a visually stunning, enjoyable ride. Aquaman knows what kind of movie it's supposed to be and it presents itself very well. I consider it one of the better superhero movies of recent years, and one of the better movies in general. It's a textbook example for what I consider simply a good, enjoyable movie that I won't forget anytime soon. It's a bit like a modern Titanic, but with more emphasis on epicness and visuals and less on emotion.

Jason Momoa stated in an interview that there's only a little bit of preachiness in Aquaman, not so much that it could become annoying. I fully agree with him, and I appreciate that James Wan understands this, too. A movie is supposed to be nothing more than a movie, even if it makes the audience think, it's never supposed to pull us right back into reality. If we think about any of the implications of the in-movie commentary, then we're supposed to think about it within the realm of that movie. Only when the end credits roll is when the magic should be allowed to fade. And I, for one, had this exact experience. I felt like a kid in a theater again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aquaman is a fun superhero movie lighter in tone compared to the other DCEU movies. Its a fresh take on the king of atlantis with solid performances from the starcast especially from momoa and patrick wilson. The visuals are stunning , fight choreography exquiste, the suits of aquamna, mera, ocean master and black manta seems to have been ripped-off straight from the comics.A drawback to it would be that it contains too many cheesy dialogues which at times were even cringe worthy and also, some subplots were not given as much weight as they should have been. Nevertheless, the good outweigh the bad and you can easily forget about those little errors since the story itself compensate for it. James Wan has nailed it with his vision and direction and thanks to him, AQUAMAN would no longer be the joke he was once. Expand

Jason Momoa takes on the title role with his immense presence and the demeanor of a regular, rough-around-the-edges guy. There's a plot that so feeble it doesn't need to be addressed. The underwater kingdom is full of beautiful, imaginative visuals and slightly bizarre creatures. Director James Wan (primarily known for the "Saw" series) brings his skills with action to create some impressive fight sequences, although (like most of these superhero films) the last big battle is too long and too cluttered. Overall, it's less serious and more fun than many comic book flix. NOTE: Stay thru the closing title sequences for a hint of the sequel. Expand

James Wan does his best to try and save this film from becoming another DCEU box office bomb.

The script for Aquaman is mediocre and brings nothing new to table. It's full of goofy humor and slapstick gags. The story for Aquaman feels like a mix between "Black Panther" and "Raiders Of The Lost Ark". The cast does everything they can with the given script, and you can tell everyone is having a very fun time on set and is truly happy to be a part of this film.

As for the character of Aquaman; Jason Mamoa really takes The Protector Of The Deep and makes it his own. He is full of energy and charisma, not to mention he just looks damn awesome on screen.

The realashionship between Arthur and Mera is very sweet, although their romance feels very out of place.

Patrick Wilson does a good job as always, and it's good to know James Wan always has place for him in his films.

The inclusion of Black Manta feels very forced, and his helmet looks like a bumbling Power Ranger villain. He would have worked much better as the antogonist for the sequel.

By far the crown jewel of Aquaman is its VFX and Costumes. The underwater sequence looks absolutely stunning and realistic, and the costume department manages to perfectly translate the costumes from Aquaman Lore from the page to the silver screen.

Where this film really shines is that its focal point is an entirely different type of hero with an entirely new setting, and introduces a new society that has a completely foreign culture to the established norms leaving the complete package of this film feeling so fresh for this genre. Personally, I felt the attempts at comedy fell a bit flat but then again comedy was never really DC's strong point. However DC did finally improve on adding color to a film instead of it being constant grim/dark scenes. In fact I'd wager this is among the most colorful Capeman movies ever made. Though it did retain a couple Grim/dark scenes which seems to be a nod to longtime DC fanboys. I found the mix of color and Grim/dark to be near perfect in this film. All in all, I found myself entertained throughout the entire film and even intrigued in potential sequels and tie-ins for this character in future projects. This film is not a perfect 10 for two reasons. 1. Comedy was a bit lame 2. DC's pace is still too fast for me; they create really beautiful scenes and then rush through them so quickly, its a real shame sometimes. Expand

Then the plot goes from the Little Mermaid to Harry Potter to Excalibur to Indiana Jones to Journey to the Center of the Earth to Clash of the Titans and a little bit of Lord of the Rings...What a mess zero imagination in the writing of the story was used, do they not have comic books to use for reference? Finally, What was the point of Black Manta? He was barely in the movie could have cut those sequences completely and no one would have noticed. Wonder Woman was a better movie and so was Justice League even though it used the lord of the rings plot at least it was consistent. Expand

The third act in this film is also phenomenal to behold with, Its worth seeing this film just for the CGI and visual effects alone. The negatives of the film for me involve some cringy/forced dialogue and music choices which take you out of the film, most noticeably in the second act during the Desert scenes. Expand

Go see it in IMAX 3D. If anything,it’ll make you moan in absolute joy whenever they inquadrate on King Orm’s majestic presence. Onto the review.

Huh....You know what was probably the most impressive thing about Aquaman, the new movie directed by Horror veteran James Wan? The fact that it easily tricks you into thinking it’s a great experience.
Because, while it is stunning (to a halt),Aquaman is just an aggressively decent movie if you take out the production design behind it. The movie is fantastic whenever it doesn’t fill the screen with CG Splooge,or,as I’d like to call it,CG P***.
CG that it’s just used as a gimmick because the movie’s afraid to admit the total buffoonery of its Script (written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, who was fresh off Venom),lacking any real dialogue or emotion onto a story that feels like it’s not playing with its Potential Cards.
But there is something else I can praise besides the CG,and that is Orm,Arthur’s brother (played by Patrick Wilson). Not their motivations, but the acting behind it. Wilson feels like he’s having fun playing this character...In a theatrical presentation. Not a movie, but a Theatrical Presentation. A great one at that. Even if,again, the motivation is something we saw a million times (angry brother wants to take the throne because blah blah...Whatever).
And the rest is just...fine. Nothing mind-numbing or bad. Just fine.
The soundtrack has enough cues to be a score of its own instead of this big rip-off of Thor Ragnarok (since they share the same style of 80s Synthy vibes and Cinematic Orchestra mixed together). The cinematography is something,I think, since there were some moments where it feels John Woo-esque,in that they would slow the footage to try and make us feel something for the sake of the script. I just mentioned it because whenever they shoot a scene with Orm is beautiful to look at. Even more so if you’ll see it in IMAX 3D,because man,OH MAN,if the audience was moaning hard at that theater during the epic shot in the Finale.
And again, the CG is great. I'm just sad it was used as a distraction to that horrible script. But still,go see Aquaman. If anything, you'll get a kick out of it more than I did. Just… don't overhype it as this colossal Box office success. Got it? Yeah? Great!

This adds a lot of value to the movie, as I felt as if I was really connecting with the main character. As for the story itself, it's very well made.
As for the actor, perfect choice.

I'm also surprised at all the special effects used. They really made the underwater scenes feel underwater.
Voices also sound slightly different under the water, just so that you're constantly reminded of the setting.

Definitely recommended. I'm buying this when it releases on Blu-ray.

I definitely recommend this movie.

Decent entry to the superhero genre, Wan gets the most out of the cast, amazing cgi and action. The movie hurtles along at breakneck speed and is a little over the top at times. It doesn't take itself too seriously and benefits from that unlike BvS.

I tell you: We have not seen such a creative fantasy script and VFX since the last JJ film. While James and JJ both lack the strong moral compass of Spielberg, excepting this, Aquaman is as creative a fantasy script and VFX as you could hope for. I come from seeing close to every fantasy movie and superhero movie made. I first liked James Wan on the X-Files and have followed his horror films from a distance. James brings a great deal together here. He’s working with well-worn tropes but manages again and again to make them seem fresh. Thor: Ragnarok is the appropriate comparison here, another crowd please, another comic book come to life successfully. Aquaman has more weight and depth than Thor:R due to its hero's journey arc. I see critics criticizing Aquaman for clashes of tone. When multiple critics say this and I do not, I always wonder how many were simply looking between the screen and checking their emails on their smart phone. I went to art school and have written 44 books where shadings of tone visually and verbally are crucial. Aquaman is a masterful blending of goofy and serious moods. Even an octopus playing multiple drums fits in. A lesser presence in one or more of the main roles could have sunk this effort. The plot point shuffling of trident fight one ending inconclusively leading to a whole middle section hero's journey to get to the second and final trident fight, is amazing effective to keep the narrative afloat. The drone rooftop chase footage is used to great effect. In a behind the scenes YouTube, James says at a superhero movie the audience should feel like they are learning something from the characters; and, that they inspire us to see our own capacity to do good in our own lives. Aquaman does 9/10 on both of these. Expand

This is apparently DC's attempt to mix together "Thor" and "Black Panther," set the story underwater, and see what floats to the surface. It arrives belly-up.

"Bloated" is the first word that comes to mind, with no pun intended. The first 1-1/2 hours of this film could have been shortened to 1/2 hour and left the rest for a story about Aquaman battling Black Manta, who is the coolest thing (maybe the only cool thing) here. The story takes forever to get going and makes so many side trips along the way that the central conflict is forgotten, and that's not good for a story.

A few random complaints:

The undersea scenes are a mass of special effects adding up to a larger blue-purple special effect. It's like watching an attempt to replicate the original TRON, only more expensively.

Nicole Kidman's plastic surgery is on full display. It's hard to believe what people will do to their own bodies.

The female lead's hair looks awful--don't these creative geniuses realize that real red hair is more than just one flat red color? How much did this hair design cost?

Aquaman's emotional transition from guzzling brawler to stand-up leader of the fish folks happened somewhere, but I didn't notice it until he basically stated this in his final narration.

He and fish-girl have no charisma whatsoever. She is so off-the-shelf it's hard to understand how someone thought this was a memorable character.

After about 2 hours of this film it seemed to me the crowd in the theatre was just numb. As many millions of dollars as we saw splashing and exploding on the screen, there was very little to watch, because we were just waiting for the splashes and explosions to end in a big splash and explosion.

If you like this version of Aquaman's hunky-dopey-but-sincere (and-all-but-original) schtick I suppose you could get into it. Personally, I was reminded of other massive-budget bores like Dune, not to mention most of DC's superhero offerings.

By the way, I was looking forward to seeing this movie, thinking DC had a chance to do something other than make another grim, black-leather version of one of their heroes. It wasn't like that, but it was bad in a different way. Maybe this is progress.

I liked Aquamam it was big, colorful, fun and overall an enjoyable DC superhero movie however it did have some significant flaws.

I can say that Aquamam was DC’s most ambitious movie to date and they nailed most. The first act of the movie is pretty solid you get some backstory on Author Curry, some nice foundation for the plot and interesting interactions between Aquamam and the villain Black Manta earlier on which the movie does a good job of making you understand his motivations for hating Aquamam and wanting to kill him and Makes Aquamam reconsider some of his actions regarding Black Manta which was some nice writing.

The second act of the movie was surprisingly the weakest just when the story was about to kick into gear the movie gets goofy I mean characters like Mera and Aquaman become cartoony and silly as the movie’s attempts to make you laugh becomes forced and awkward I mean there is literally toilet humor in this movie. It looked like two different people were directing the movie compared to the first half of the movie. Even characters like Black Manta became campy with him saying some weird dialogue. I wouldn’t say the second act is terrible but compared to the first act of the movie it’s just not as good.Luckily the movie comes into focus in the last third of the movie with some very good action, compelling story and surprisingly great CGI throughout the movie and some of the best I’ve seen in a long while.

The best characters in the movie were undoubtedly Aquaman and Mera. Jason Mamoa and Amber Heard had nice chemistry with each other even in the goofy scenes, Aquaman’s journey to becoming King was well done as the movie made you understand why he reluctant to be King and how Aquaman’s character grew throughout the movie especially with the help of Mera who also has a good mini arc in the movie and she had some badass scenes in the movie and again her best moments was with Aquaman as they went well together.

The villain Ocean Master played by Patrick Wilson was bland, I mean they could have done much more with him but as the movie went on he became just another generic bad guy. Earlier in the movie he had some decent reasons for wanting to have War with the surface and had some good interactions between him and Aquaman since their brothers but you never got to see more of that. Patrick Wilson’s performance wasn’t even bad it was actually decent but the story involving him didn’t have anything significant to do besides being evil because he is a bad guy.

Like I said earlier the visuals were incredible and very colorful especially with the scenes under water and the sea creatures i never knew James Wan was capable of directing a movie with such incredible visuals and great CGI so one thing you could say about Aquaman is that it was truly a spectacle at times. Atlantis and other sea kingdoms looked pretty good and contributed to the story well however sometimes these under water kingdoms like Atlantis felt empty at times I mean it looked interesting but you never got to see more of it besides action scenes and water battles which was kind of disappointing. The action was also very good again the visuals helped make the action good at times especially the final battle it wasn’t the best thing ever but it was very nice.

The story is pretty solid and Aquaman’s journey is interesting as he deals with responsibilities he doesn’t want to have but he grows over time into a hero and despite being campy at times the movie has some pretty funny scenes so that’s another plus.So I enjoyed Aquaman it’s DC best movie since Wonder Woman not as great but still a pretty good movie with a solid story, great CGI and visuals and characters despite a bland villain and silly second act. Hope this continues for DC movies.

While it’s true that probably 50% or more of the movie is action sequences, and while it’s also true that the plot is little more than something to hang the action on, and that the dialog is pretty superficial, I have to admit that I sat wide eyed and riveted through every moment of this epic achievement in 3D visual splendor. Over and over again, I could not believe what I was being treated to. Again and again I found myself mouthing “holy s@#t” as another simply amazing visual unfolded. Though the action was completely over the top, it was so incredibly edited that it managed to be intimate and easy to follow, while being absolutely immense. I also enjoyed Nicole Kidman and the rest of the cast. Jason Momoa was epic. He may not win an Oscar for this role, but he was simply perfect. There is no character development , all lines are done like they are just being blandly read of a piece of paper at the initial reading , without any passion or want from actors. The moments like fight scenes or the first reveal of the lost city , were supposed to be exciting , they were not, they were so poorly done that I was literally falling asleep in a theater...I couldn't finish watching this atrocity , I stood up and walked out. Conclusion- its a garbage film , with a ton of unnecessary cliches and bland unwitty humor. Expand

These scenes are separated by unnecessary dialogue too complex and tedious to pay attention to. This film could have been filled with wondrous nautical imagery, but the designs are the epitome of generic and uninspiring, over-saturated with CGI. It is also pointless to establish a villain at the beginning if that villain barely appears after their first scene.

I could have forgiven the film for being bland, but since it went on for so long, I ended up sat thinking how immoral it felt that so very much money went into this.

You must suspend your disbelief and embrace its cheeky weirdness. Now, more than a movie, Aquaman is a visual JOURNEY, an immersive experience. This movie is all about its breathtaking world-building, lavish CGI and VFX. The very straightforward story and its charming characters serve one purpose: make you dive deep into their world and fall in love with it. Remember Avatar? Well, Aquaman delivers ten times more joy, awe-inspiring views and badass characters, with almost no political agendas. This movie is aware of what it is and it doesn't pretend to be anything else, because it really doesn't need to, which makes it DCEU's most honest film so far. Back to CGI and VFX, it's the most ambitious film since Avatar and even Gravity, as it makes possible what was believed to be impossible (and even unthinkable): an underwater epic, of which we only really had gotten a glimpse with James Cameron's The Abyss. That was almost 30 years ago! Expand

Aquaman is a good superhero movie from DC. It's a definite improvement over their previous garbage movies (Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman and Justice League), but it's not as good as Wonder Woman.

Jason Momoa looks nothing like the Aquaman from the comics, but he brings humor and some laid back, "brawn-with-a-heart-of-gold" attitude. Momoa's Aquaman is like a random dude enjoying life's little pleasures.

The film tries to be more humorous than the other darker DC movies and approach Marvel's quasi-comical style, but the writers' attempts at making jokes mostly fall flat. I'll never forget the tough guys gang with the pink smartphone asking for a selfie with Aquaman. Yikes!

The script has a few good core ideas but overall is a complicated mess. There is so much going on, too much backstory and legends thrown into the mix, and so many characters walking around, that the plot quickly loses its focus and characters don't have enough room to develop. The movie's story is at its best when talking about marine pollution, the desire of underwater people for revenge, and the strange relationship between half-brothers Aquaman and Oceanmaster, but the writers decided to also branch the story in a King Arthur and Excaliber-kind of direction because Aquaman's human name is, ehm, Arthur. Well, at least it's not nearly as bad as the infamous "Martha" moment in Batman v Superman. And if all that wasn't enough, here is a large scale underwater battle (rivaling those of the Lord of the Rings movies) to top it off. In Aquaman's first movie!

Black Manta was a highlight of the movie for me, but DC sidelined Aquaman's arch-enemy for the eventual sequel.

After DC released a bunch of horrible movies, Wonder Woman and Aquaman have vastly improved upon their predecessors. Will DC be able to keep up with their upcoming movies like Shazam, Flash, and others? Only time will tell.
