Filled with sharp dialogue and clever visual humour, the film takes a welcome step away from the overly serious fare that Marvel has been serving up recently, while still feeling like it exists within the same reality as the other MCU films.

Paul Rudd is his usual self-deprecating everyman self, and Evangeline Lily is interesting and likeable as Hope Van Dyne, and Michael Douglas as Dr. Hank Pym is brilliant. The visual effects are of excellent quality and the production design is solid if unremarkable. The direction is sharp and the action sequences are cleanly shot, with minimal quick cuts to confuse the viewer about what is happening. All told, its a tremendously fun ride that will leave you smiling. Ant Man puts the "comic" back in comicbook movie.

I've watched all the marvel movies, the shows, etc. I actually think this one is the one I've had the most fun watching so far. Knowing the challenges they were working with with Pym's source material, I think they did an excellent job picking an Ant Man and bringing him to screen.

I think a lot of people are thinking in their heads about 'how great it could have been' with the earlier director who was signed on, but honestly we will never know and it could have been terrible. As it was, I enjoyed the mix of genres, thought the fight scenes were a lot more fun and quirky than most. My one complaint (and hope) is that it wasn't an Ant Man and The Wasp movie. Hopefully they get enough interest for a sequel with a big actiony role for Evangeline Lilly as hero.

First off, Paul Rudd is awesome as The title character. He provides a great mix of comedic flair and meanings of becoming a hero. He's so great because of the fact that he's such an expected figure. It's like when Steve Carrel did "Foxcatcher"; you wouldn't expect actors like them to do something very unique. But Rudd pulls it off with flying colors. I could go on about the performances. Michael Douglas is fantastic as "Hank Pym", going back and forth with the likes of Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily (she's also great). And Michael Pena was hysterical! But I want to get into the scope of this movie. It's really narrowed down to such a much smaller scale in comparison to every other marvel movie. And I loved that! The cinematic scope and vision was so perfect for this movie. The action was super cool and inventive all at the same time. It shows that you don't need humongous action sequences like in the "Avengers" movies or "Man of Steel". It's still rather impressive to watch the action scope unveil on a smaller that level that can still keep your eyes glued to the screen. As for flaws, I didn't care Bobby Cannavale's character. And I wish they went more in depth with the relationship between Scott Lang and his daughter. I felt something was there, but not entirely for me to care about them. I will say that the villain may not have brought anything new to the table, but he was still intriguing to watch unveil. Overall, this is a wildly hilarious and beautiful action movie shown on a much smaller scale. I give "Ant-Man" an A-! Be sure to check out my YouTube channel "LittleMovieBoy" for more reviews. Fortunately, Ant-Man dared to be different than the usual superheroI'm not one for big action spectacles where we see New York getting destroyed for the four-millionth time, so I'm always a little worried before I go into a superhero movie. Fortunately, Ant-Man dared to be different than the usual superhero flick like the largely overrated Avengers and abysmal Man of Steel by being a heist movie. Ant-Man, based on the Marvel character, Scott Lang has to use Dr. Pym's Ant-Man suit and plot a heist to stop Darren Cross from making more Ant-Man suits. The suit itself allows the wearer to shrink to the size of an ant while their physical strength increases, making them a virtually unstoppable force. The worst thing I can say about Ant-Man is that it's not as neat and controlled as Marvel's best entries. It doesn't match the tight story of Iron Man or the thrilling nature of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it makes up for that by being an incredibly fun and sometimes unpredictable heist movie. A majority of the film is dedicated to showing how Lang attempts to pull of the heist rather than showing non-stop action. It makes Ant-Man feel unique and significantly different than any other Marvel movie I've seen. Most of the action doesn't happen until the final act of the film, but the scenes themselves are very interesting since you see Lang and Cross constantly growing and shrinking. There's also quite a bit of comedy in there, which unfortunately, misses a lot more than it hits. Nevertheless, Ant-Man is an appropriately fun and unique superhero movie that actually tries to tell a story rather than showing fifty skyscrapers fall to the ground. Expand

And in spite of the unfortunate departure of Edgar Wright along with a short productionWhilst he had to wait for all the Super Soldiers and aggressive raccoons to have their movies, it's finally Ant-man's chance to make it to the big screen. And in spite of the unfortunate departure of Edgar Wright along with a short production time, Ant-man is still able to continue the style and quality of the Marvel cinematic universe.

Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is a con-man and master thief who has recently been released from prison. Impressed by his skills, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) recruits him to become the next Ant-man. He needs him to pull off a heist to retrieve the Yellowjacket suit, a costume with the same abilities of the Ant-man costume, being developed by Daren Cross (Corey Stroll) who intends to sell it to villainous corporations such as Hydra. Motivated by his desire to see his daughter again, Scott accepts his second chance in life and sets out to carry out the heist.

Whilst they try to raise the stakes at points (Pym reminds us every so often of how the Yellowjacket suit could change the world as we know it) the real charm of the film is in how low-key it is compared to the rest of the Marvel films. It's not some epic battle where the fate of humanity is at stake. Instead it's just a cool heist movie and a nice change of pace from the usual large scale tone used in most Marvel movies.

This low key style leaves a lot more focus on the characters to keep the film entertaining and fortunately the actors were up to the task. Paul Rudd is a great addition to the Marvel Superhero roster by being cool, likable and grounding Scott as a human character through bringing the same comedic skill that we loved in films like the 40 Year Old Virgin (albeit with less "You know how I know you're gay" jokes). Douglas is also memorable as his mentor and the original Ant Man, being an interesting take on a retired superhero. Instead of just being old and brooding, he still has the same courage and wit he had in his prime. Plus we get a few cool flashback scenes seeing a younger Michael Douglas (made with very convincing CGI) working as the original Ant- man in his prime, which looked so cool that it made me eager to see Pym get his own movie at some point.

Whilst Yellowjacket did seem to follow all the weak Marvel tropes for villains (rushed back-story, lack of screen time etc.) he was still surprisingly entertaining in the film. Largely because of Corey Stoll who not only gives a great menacing presence, but also plays it so over the top that he brings charm to an otherwise charmless character. The only weak character was Bobby Cannavale as Scott's ex-wives new douchey boyfriend. Mostly because the douchey boyfriend character is one of the most worn out clichés in cinema and didn't seem to have any real purpose in the film other than weak comedy relief. Plus it seems a shame that the film spends so much time with him whilst we hardly get any scenes with his wife and daughter (Judy Greer and Abby Fortson respectively) who are far more important to the story and should have had more screen time. It's especially disappointing Fortson didn't get more screen time since the few scenes she was in were amongst the funniest moments in the film.

However the centrepiece of this film is the action sequences, which contain the most creative fight scenes that Disney's Marvel have had in a while. The size shifting dynamic added a whole new element to the fight scenes visually, taking the usual destruction of a standard blockbuster and placing it inside a children's bedroom. Plus the scenes feel like they have Edgar Wright's fingerprints all over it having clever wordplay and great visual gags making the fights hilarious.

Though that's not to say that the fight scenes are flawless. At times their decisions to have the battles be created entirely with CGI are fairly distracting as most of the backgrounds are blurred out in the miniature scenes. It never ruins the fights, but it can be distracting. And it would have looked a lot better if they had been more creative for some of the sequences and used actual sets for some of the miniature shots.

But at the end of the film the lingering thought did remain, would Edgar White's Ant-man had been better? Maybe it would have been more visually creative. Or maybe it much of Wright was still in the film and it wouldn't be much different. But ignoring what it could have been, the films still great at what it does. It packs in the laughs, has likeable characters and does a decent origin story. However other than the fight sequences, there's nothing substantially different here that we haven't already seen from other superhero films.

I’m curious to see what the original script Edgar Wright wrote was because knowing him it would’ve been funny, smart, original, and madly entertaining. Instead, we are left with the most formulaic story Marvel’s ever written that while not bad has been seen before in several Marvel films. If the film had interesting characters like Guardians of the Galaxy or great action like Pacific Rim or The World’s End (seriously great action there) those flaws could be overlooked but unfortunately none of the characters are interesting and the film fails to do anything interesting with the heist premise or take advantage of the shrinking concept to provide creative action and visuals. As a result, Ant-Man comes across the way The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America come across for some people it just exists to set up another Marvel movie. Similar to The Wolverine, the end credits scene, the second one as the first one reveals something obvious, teases a bigger and more interesting movie and hopefully that makes up for it because if this is the approach Marvel will take to all non-Avengers films going forward then I grow increasingly worried about how they will treat future additions such as Dr. Strange and Spider-Man. Die hard Marvel fans will probably be satisfied with the film as the loud family behind me was but those looking for something special will not find it here just sneak in for the end credits scene, the only good part of the film, and/or wait for the DVD if you are curious. I was kind of bummed that this movie didn't go for the usual Marvel formula, but at least the movie did a good job in generating some laughs. And Paul Rudd's performance was appealing. I can't say there weren't parts that were particularly uninvolving but it got better over the second half of the movie. The villain is clearly one-note, and it doesn't seem like a character that anyone would like simply because he wears a badass yellow jacket (pun unintended). However, beyond the dazzling visuals, great cast and entertaining action, there was actually some easter eggs to be found, but the one that most excited me was the reference to Spider-Man in the end of the movie. As a Spidey fan, I'm looking forward to the new reboot produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures.

So... my take on "Ant-Man"? It was a solid movie, and if you're a fan of super-heroes, this film is watchable for you.

6.5/10.

With the reliance on action taking a back seat the writing is the star here and Ant-Man has a wonderfully knowing and smart script which gives all the characters room to breath and their own moment in the spotlight. Rudd is perfect as the reluctant hero, and its good to see Michael Douglas back in a meaty role. When the action does arrive it is done in a way different to what Marvel has done before, almost making fun of its big budget predecessors. All the set pieces that reoccur in the other films are still here, but they are given a twist that will leave you with a massive grin on your face, especially if you are fed up with the standard Marvel trope of destroying a city at the conclusion of every film, which happens here too but in a very different way. Also it has the best use of Thomas The Tank Engine in any film you will have seen to date. Peyton Reed does a good job directing, but it is Edgar Wrights fingerprints that are all over the best sections Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched ant-man earlier on today. First thing I notice is the movie mistake where pym punches the guy in the face bloody nose. Few camera angle changes and it's fine next thing you know stark hands the guy a tissue for the now yet again bloody nose. Not looking good. Well let's put aside the fact how wasp got very little scree time although I do like how they referenced the costume change from black and red to black yellow at this moment if you have seen the film but didn't watch the secret ending you'll be thinking what's this guy on about like many naive people who where in the cinema with me. Shame on you. Ok now it's time for yellow jacket. Yellow jacket was Hank pump in the comics which screws up the plot line with cross I got a few strange looks in the cinema when Yellowjacket was first introduced and I tried to claw m eyes out and the rest of the looks where in agreement with my pain. I mean how on earth does marvel turn this around thanks to the secret ending of avengers 2 we know that the suit stays in good hands so we knew how the fight was going to end or was just me putting far too much thought into it? Anyway the secret ending ruins the fact how pym used to be wasp for a short while. Not to mention no giant man / Goliath I mean what where they thinking! Who can put on a materminuplation suit in 10 seconds never mind 4! Oath and ohms line "your hitching a ride out side there 5 block perimeter" your the size of an ant they could have national guard waiting for you unless they are the size of an ant too it doesn't matter. And the helmet is meant to control the ants not an ear piece. Ramble finished as a movie it was decent as a comic book movie meh. Expand

Bringing a character not well known outside of comic-book fandom into the Marvel Cinematic universe is a risk particularly considering the unique powers that ‘Ant-Man’ brings to the table scale-wise, but what it lacks in grandiose spectacularBringing a character not well known outside of comic-book fandom into the Marvel Cinematic universe is a risk particularly considering the unique powers that ‘Ant-Man’ brings to the table scale-wise, but what it lacks in grandiose spectacular set-pieces this movie makes up for with its very grounded comedic tone.
In part ‘Ant-man’ feels rather fittingly like a typical Paul Rudd comedy which happens to involve a heist and people dressing like superheroes which is where it’s at its most effective, but parallel to this runs a formulaic Marvel origin story that ticks all the necessary boxes without offering anything particularly memorable.

It seems like Marvel’s careful planning to ensure a family-friendly tone and narrative that adequately bleeds into the rest of the Marvel universe has resulted in a film that doesn’t take many risks, perhaps this is the cause and consequence of ‘Ant-man’s’ many production problems involving replacing directors and constantly changing scripts.

When risks are taken you get unique action sequences based on the comedic value of shrinking characters along with the heart of the film in Paul Rudd’s lead performance, backed up hilariously by his “Three Stooges-like” companions.

The Bottom Line…
Safe and sometimes clichéd, ‘Ant-man’ lacks the punch of some other Marvel outings but what it lacks in scale it makes up for in humour and charm, given all its production issues it seems like Marvel have done a commendable job in introducing a character that can quite literally slot into any space in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After Avengers: AoU, a film in which I loved, but many didn't, I didn't think they could make lightning strike twice in one summer, especially with all the problems this movie had and how long it took to get into production, but I can tell you Marvel fans, more specifically Ant-Man fans, this is the film Ant-Man deserves. This film is funny, smart, action packed, and proves that Marvel can still create new and exciting films. Paul Rudd as Scott Lang was perfect casting and made me forget any worries I had about Hank not being Ant-Man. Besides Rudd, Micheal Douglas and Evangiline Lilly are great as Hank Pym and his daughter, Hope. Corey Stoll as Darren Cross/Yellowjacket isn't as bad as some critics are saying, and he brings a true motive and terror to his role. I believe the true comedic star of the film is Michael Peña who plays Luis, Scott's best friend. He steals every scene he is in and I want him in more Marvel films, he's a real treat. This movie pulls off the heist genre, a tough genre to do, while maintaining the campy comic book feel we've come to know and love. There's many surprises for fans during and even after the movie. Overall, Ant-Man is some of the most fun I've had at a theater, and definitely in Marvel's top 5. Expand

The plot isn't innovative or clever by any means, but it works thanks to Peyton Reed's eye for the bizarre and going back and forth between big and small perspectives, and the charisma brought by Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas. All of them play each other in a very engaging manner. What avoided Ant-Man from reaching its full potential was mostly the villain, who was just another evil businessman stereotype, and didn't give the talented Corey Stoll a lot to do. It was basically a recycled version of Iron Man's Obadiah Stane. Bobby Cannavale was underused as well in a very thankless role, and Michael Peña's jokes were contrived and sometimes juvenile and annoying. I would say Ant-Man is like Guardians of the Galaxy in the way that it's a very standard story elevated by its charming cast and the heart given by its director. Expand

If you enjoyed films like Oceans 11 I would also recommend it on that basis. It’s not entirely perfect, but it is is pretty damm good and I think that is largely down to Edgar Allen and Joe Cornish’s excellent screenplay. The action scenes are great and the 3D is pretty good for a change and the characters were really propped up by excellent performances. Peyton Reed has finely directed a film that I actually really enjoyed. Don’t expect it to be a traditional Superhero movie because it only really gets into that in the last 20 - 30 minutes of the film, but I would really urge people that this film is worth checking out. "Ant-Man" 10 Scale Rating: 7.0 (Good) ...

The Good: As usual, Marvel did well in the casting department. Rudd delivers as a thief with a heart of gold, thrust into the world of super heroes. Corey Stoll was solid with what he had to work with, while Evangeline Lilly sulked through a large portion of the film before finally loosening up and turning in a decent performance. Micheal Douglas steals the show as Scott Lang's mentor, Hank Pym. The film also has a handful of cameos that will make fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe smile. It takes some time to get around to it, but when we finally see Ant-Man involved in full bore action, it is very well done. The fight between himself and random goons, as well as the final battle with the villainous Yellowjacket, are very creative. The heist itself might be the most entertaining part of the film, as well as the ties to the greater Marvel Universe.

The Bad: While the film is pretty good, it just didn't wow me. Some aspects of it were too straight-forward and overly formulaic. Stoll's Daren Cross (AKA Yellowjacket) was a one-note villain and sort of a cliche character that we had already seen many times before. His backstory was somewhat force fed to us and you didn't feel much for him, thus making his motivations fall flat. The villain's ultimate fate was also a pretty big letdown. I also didn't mind the humorous elements of the film, but did feel they were a little over-done. It felt a lot like they were making as many attempts as possible, to insure that something would stick. While the film was entertaining and fits well into the shared universe, it falls squarely in the bottom half of my list when it comes to MCU offerings.

The special effects are good, but that's no surprise, but a big surprise was that most of the characters had good development, and while the villain wasn't a great villain he was serviceable. The one thing I didn't like was that Ant-Man ended having a lot of cliches, and very similar plot to Batman Beyond, the 90s TV show. All in all the Ant-Man is led by good acting, a good story, albeit a little clichéd, and a good sense of humor. While Ant-Man isn't Marvel's best it's still quite entertaining. Expand
