This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Marvel's "Ant-Man" is the great movie for the whole family, friends, relatives, and anyone else. But among all the MCU films I've watched, this is the most unique MCU film of all time today. Full of humors, because of director Peyton Reed and its main star Paul Rudd, who also helped writing the creative script of the film, and also, with lessons. And I was surprised for the special participation of Thomas the Tank Engine. And also, the easter egg! The appearance of New Avengers Headquarters in Upstate New York, Sam Wilson/Falcon, who becomes the Avenger, and the wonderful reference of Spider-Man, the guy who jumps, who swings and climb through the walls. And I'm so very excited for Scott Lang reprising on "Captain America: Civil War". And thanks to Sam Wilson for saying, "I know a guy." And it says "Ant-Man will return". Expand

Ant-Man is an achievement from Marvel. This movie has the all-in-one essence, pure from Marvel; do you think Guardians of the Galaxy was a comedy? This movie is pure comedy (in the best way possible) I love the way it put all together, comedy, ACTION, history, EASTER EGGS, this movie was the true entry for Civil War. Not to mention the performances (perfect cast), Paul Rud was just amazing for the role, Evangeline, lovely, Douglas did an excellent work. Ant-Man made me feel like if I were in the Marvel Universe. After the not so good Age of Ultron, this made all back in the game. Seriously, as a true Marvel fan, An excellent film. Expand

It is funny in itsHesitating to make 2 statements, feeling they will come back to bite me in the butt, I still will: 1) “Ant-Man” is the first Marvel comics to screen that I really enjoyed and 2) “Ant-Man” is a very funny movie! It is funny in its ridiculousness, in its insensible, illogical, crazy screenplay and the incredible special effects has too many to mention moments. This may all be a reaction to the deadly boring film I saw Friday but whatever the reason I was entertained and what more do you want from a Saturday afternoon film?

Paul Rudd, as Ant-Man, is an ex-con who doesn’t want to go back to jail but needs to get back support money for his child, Abby Ryder Fortson, to his ex-wife Judy Greer who has a new boyfriend, Bobby Cannavale. Meanwhile Dr. Hank Pym, played by Michael Douglas looking great--special effects?--has discovered the shrinkage formula and, following Rudd for a number of years, elects him to be the Ant-man. His daughter, Evangeline Lilly, works for Corey Stoll, the protégé of the Doctor and pushing him out of the business but doesn’t have the formula and is working on his own. You can almost see Stoll, as the villain, twirling his non-existent mustache. Oh yes can’t forget the trio of Michael Pena, Tip Harris and Wood Harris along with David Dastmalchian as former prison friends of Rudd. Another clever special effect involves Pena and lip movements.

There are a few sweet moments involving the fathers and daughters and one of how Lilly’s mother died, slowing the laughter pace, but only the latter is a time waster.

Director Peyton Reed, with the screenplay by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Adam McKay and Paul Rudd, who obviously added to the humor of the film, takes the audience on a eye pleasing and mind bending journey.

Hollywood has tackled the theme of humans shrinking before but it hasn’t been until “Ant-Man” and CGI that it has been as funny and entertaining!

However, as Ant Man himself had thoroughly proven, sometimes the smaller things are better; instead of more explosions or action, a lot of effort looks to have been focused towards the script like "Guardians of The Galaxy", as the plot does have a well-balanced mix of humor, seriousness, and the heartwarming theme that is the importance of family. Truly an excellent Marvel superhero movie and, in someways, a great example that highlights what direction Marvel should take their stand-alone hero movies to. Expand

Marvel has brought us some memorable superheros like Iron-Man, Spider-Man, Captain America etc. But one superhero was not well known, that would be "Ant-Man". A hero created by the man himself, Stan Lee. Ant-Man did not get much praise when he was created in 1962; but when the film came out, almost everyone praised it for bringing the unknown hero back to life.

A man named Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) resigns from the S.H.I.E.L.D organization after they tried to use him to replicate the shrinking ability that he had invented. We are then introduced to a man named Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), who is in prison for doing burglary. He is introduced in a unique way, a thief who happens to be a father of his daughter who was taken away from due to custody issues. He and his pals plan a burglary in a mansion to steal something they have heard the owner is keeping something locked up tight.

Paul Rudd's performance is as good as he gets, alongside the supporting cast that he works with on camera. The fights is anything we have seen in a traditional Marvel movie, each of them having their own sense of action and tension. This is one of those movies that keeps getting better as the story progresses, a human being turning turning into the size of an ant. The concept is so intriguing, like how does he do it? What made Stan Lee think of this concept? It is overall original and interesting at the same time.

The fact that Ant-Man can take down other guys by being the size of an ant is so funny; he is the size of an ant, but can still take down men that is one hundred times stronger than him. Sure the idea sounds funny, but when you look at it, it works like it came out of a children's picture book.

The plot is predictable like most superhero films are (no spoilers here), but it is a fun summer flick to sit through if you have seen all the popular ones. This will be remembered as bringing Ant-Man back to life in the shape of a film, we will just have to see if Ant-Man will be in future sequels, or even in future "The Avengers" movies.

The action was okay(good for an origin story), it had a simple plot, but it was excecuted beautifly the performances from Micheal Douglas, Paul rudd and Evangeline Lilly were perfect and the secondary characters fit in well like tip harris and Bobby Cannavale although Judy Greer was't fleshed out. The father-daughter drama was spot on and Antman fit in to the Marvel universe perfectly.Whats not beautiful however is Corey Stoll as Yellowjacket before he was Yellowjacket he was an okay villian,BUT the transformation into yellowjacket took too long and he was sadly wasted, In the first act of the movie a few parts did'nt come together like Paul rudd becoming Antman and a few parts dragged on like Scott Lang's transition in to Antman, otherwise it was a fun movie, The humour, was amazing especially Michael Peña who was great comic relief. Antman was an enjoyable movie to watch with good action, cast and humour, and Marvel keeps on ticking with Good movies. Expand

It was a nice change that it was a heist film instead of being about the Infinity stones or something. The only thing I would complain about it Corey Stoll's Yellowjacket. I thought he was a bit underwhelming as he's the typical bad guy who comes off as good and then being bad and what not. I felt like they could have explored his role more. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed this more than expected, but that's only because my expectations were not very high.

Ant-Man is a relatively minor character in Marvel comics but there's no telling how much of a role he'll play in the MCU. That's kind of where the problems (minor character) and the good parts are (MCU involvement).

This movie, when it didn't revolve around the Avengers or anything involving the rest of the MCU was a pretty ordinary superhero movie. What set it apart was Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas. Both play their characters very well. I liked the idea of Scott Lang (Rudd) being a burglar that Hank Pym (Douglas) was watching for a while. Inevitably Pym teams of with Lang through Michael Peña's character (good choice) getting a tip to break into Pym's house.

I enjoyed a lot of the moments and the comedy wasn't too over the top. But where this movie falls short is where a lot of other superhero movies fall. The villain. Basically, just like almost every other superhero movie, the hero is fighting a different version of himself. It's a tired and overused character at this point.

I'm interested to see where Marvel takes this character within the rest of the MCU, but this film also has me a little worried for the upcoming Doctor Strange and Black Panther standalone movies. I have no doubt that Marvel can make them work within an ensemble but unfortunately their stand alone films may be a little weak.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From the start I had a feeling this wasn't going to be good. With the other Marvel movies, even if they weren't good films, the trailer at least made it seem fun. But with the Ant-Man trailer I saw nothing to pique my interest. The good reviews gave me hope that the movie was good after all but I should have trusted my gut instead.

Now, as I look back on Ant-Man, the only thing that comes to mind is the boredom I experienced sitting in that theatre. The story has no stakes. They must steal the Yellowjacket suit and destroy Cross's work or else... what? Vague threats about how "things will be bad" are not at all exciting so I didn't really care about the plot.

More time is spent on drama between Hope and her father when focus should have been on the main character. And speaking of Hope. Previously I would have said that the romance between Thor and Jane is the worst of the Marvel romances (though I haven't seen the second film) but this just takes the cake. It is not established at all through out the film and the kiss at the end just comes out of nowhere.

And to think - last year we got Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy. This year it's Avengers 2 and Ant-Man. So much disappointment.

Rating: 8.5/10

Pros:
+Charming performance from Paul Rudd as Scott Lang. He nailed it!
+The signature MCU humor feels more appropriate for this movie than the previously released Age of Ultron and this is backed by a lot of great characters in the movie especially from Luis (played by Michael Pena).
+This movie introduced Ant-Man to the audience very well that it's going to be exciting to see him again on Captain America: Civil War.
+The scenes where Ant-Man shrinks are awesome and that's when the hero is sold for me.

Cons:
-Yellowjacket is a very one-dimensional villain. Marvel really needs to step up their villains in the levels of Loki and Wilson Fisk, or at least in the levels of Ultron where the viewers including myself can understand a villain's intentions.

It had a great main character, and good supporting characters relating to this character personally, and on a level of business. The biggest issue with the movie is the fact that most physical components connected to Scott Lang. I know it is impossible to make it realistic enough, but sizing abilities seem to be finicky. You can see him easily see-able small enough on a play table, but seemingly smaller within an anthill. None the less, the visual effects are effective and just cool. Another thing with this movie is its non-canonness. "Ant-Man" in his original comic was also able to become a "Giant-Man". I guess the reason they scrapped this idea was to make it seem like a "covert operation", rather than a full scale offensive against a threat to the Avengers/ a threat against the populace. I guess they are going to have him be a "covert operation assistant" for the Avengers, rather than a full-scale offensive specialist. Overall, I'd give this movie a 9/10. Oh yes, I'm not setting this as spoilers because Ant-Man was an original Avenger, not just an "Ex-Shield Agent " as suggested by the movie. Expand

While Wright has a diehard fanbase and a distinct visual style (although his geeky smartness sometimes can go overboard, like SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD 2010), Reed can no more than be extolled as a slick journeyman in cranking up comedies like YES MAN (2008, 6/10), THE BREAK-UP (2006, 6/10), DOWN WITH LOVE (2003, 5/10) and BRING IT ON (2000), so fans should automatically lower their expectation.

If you could shrink down to just a very small ant, your life would be different. Humans would be giants, toy trains would become trains. It gets that sense that small things are big.

Ultimately, it gets the job done correctly. It was well-done, well-executed, and just plain funny as the visuals blew me away. The camera shrinks down on the main person as if he is riding with a small little fly on some scenes. This is some of the best uses of the camera as if I was severely impressed at this miracle. Even I thought the third act could be a simulator ride at Disneyland.

In accordance to the spell bounding visuals, this film also has an awesome cast which includes Paul Reed, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and more. They all do spectacular performances with power, wit, charm, and humor. Speaking of humor, this movie is really funny. It has a ton of jokes that really had the audience laughing. I thought that the young girl was adorable and when she got along with an evil stuffed bunny. Also, the fight scenes, which are wonderfully choreographed, are loads of fun. So forget the critics who said it was generic and boring, Ant-Man is unique and funny.

If I had to find a fault in this movie, I had to admit that it was a bit rushed and not really a memorable movie (The Avengers was). It was also a bit forced from time to time. Even if it was a bit rushed, a bit forced, and a bit unmemorable, Ant-Man still manages a step forward in moviemaking. So the jokes land right on spot and the thrills are thrilling. Top it off with a top cast and some really cool effects and visuals and the result is a wild thrill ride that will entertain everyone 10 and up. So I came in with no expectations and then I found a movie that was much better than Avengers: Age of Ultron.

(In my Mission Impossible 5 review, I noted that Mission Impossible 5 was the better movie. Still, Ant-Man was still a great and comedic adventure.)

Before watching this film: I have seen all of the Marvel Comic Universe (MCU) films except for Ultron, which was reportedly, only OK.

Premise: A ex-con must master the shrinking powers of the Ant-man suit to stop an ambitious inventor from developing the same technology and then selling it to nefarious organisations.

Pros:
1. It is an interesting take and deviation from the traditional story of the Ant-man.
2. I am not completely aware of the adventures of Ant-man in the comics, but the special effects and the interactions between Ant-man and the ants are very well done.

Cons:
1. In this film, Ant-man is supposed to have nothing to do with the Avengers, not yet anyway. However, the filmmakers had name-drop the Avengers a couple of times, had an Avengers character do something significant in the film, and even had a villain organisation out in the open. The connections with the Avengers seemed cheap and designed to please the kids.
2. I don't know why Ant-man and the villain needs to keep expanding and shrinking during their fights, if they are already that powerful when tiny.
3. The film is good, but not great. It just doesn't have that certain je ne sais quoi you get in Iron Man (1), in my view the only great MCU film.

Score: 4/5 (no half scores). It is good enough to pay to watch it in the cinema.

Who would be satisfied with the film? People of all ages would like this film equally well, but more so for a Marvel comics fan.

After the excellent CAtws marvel has fallen back into it's tedious grinding franchise ways again with AAOU and now Antman.

Marvel know Antman is a weak movie and seem to try to combat this with blundering references to all it's other movies, cameos, and end of credit scenes avid fans need to see to get ready for the next movie churned out of the franchise factory.

Clunky comedy, a dull lead, an even duller villain, and aptly a CGI and steals the show from the wooden cast. Only a cool Michael Douglas kept me interested as I sat there.

the best thing I can say about Antman is it's not as bad as Terminator Genisys.

The humor, ‘heist’ aspect of the movie, and miniature-sized action scenes make it fun enough. The movie feels lively and cheery throughout, and I think this is one of the main reasons why it works. The acting and story is average at best.

The humor is enjoyable and used well, in my opinion. It doesn't feel forced or unwarranted. The jokes and quips are at least more appropriately timed/placed than in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The beginning of the film, showing a young Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and a younger SHIELD, is pretty interesting. The younger Hank’s appearance is made possible using CGI to de-age actor Michael Douglas, and I would say it turned out pretty well.

*Michael Douglas managed to capture Hank's inner turmoil with what he was given. His anger, cynicism, and some tragic backstory (told to Scott + the audience by his daughter Hope) make Hank a compelling enough character. *Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is perhaps the most relatable of the cast. He’s a nice guy, but the errors and mistakes of his past trouble his current life. He’s trying to mend family issues, and be a good father for his daughter Cassie. Paul Rudd brings a sort of average guy-charisma to the role, and you root for him and his redemption.

*Evangeline Lilly doesn’t have much to work with as Hank’s daughter Hope van Dyne. Her character could've used more development, but at least her dialogue with Scott and Pym is sometimes amusing. * “Ant-Man” unfortunately continues the trend of forgettable villains, as Corey Stoll plays Darren Cross (AKA cliche villain Yellowjacket). A businessman who wants to utilize revolutionary technology for evil purposes? This is not a new concept, and one already played out in “Iron-Man”. Remember Obadiah Stane? *Michael Pena brings the laughs as Luis (Scott’s old cellmate in prison who he lives with once he gets out).

The movie uses cliche tropes and storylines (strained family relationships, former criminal goes on quest for redemption, former protege turns against mentor, etc). There is nothing innovative about the story, and the scale of the finale might leave some to be desired. After Age of Ultron, you might be surprised at how small the ending might feel.

Ultimately, “Ant-Man” is average, but at least a fun time. If you like blockbusters and superhero films, then watch it. But if you’re more picky about your entertainment, then pass.

I have reviewed 43 movies (on Metacritic and IMDB), some recent ones, including: Minions (Despicable Me spin-off), Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fast and Furious 7, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Taken 3, and more. I also review TV shows.

Notes:

*A good idea for a new Marvel One-Shot might be to have one about Hank Pym and his early adventures as Ant-man.
*Expect to see Hope van Dyne return in the MCU. She’ll probably take on the mantle of the Wasp, from her mother.
*R.I.P Anthony! That ant lived a good life :P

The idea could be good but it is mostly done for comical effect not to show anything different or interesting to the viewer.

It has some okay scenes and it is visually okay film but it is filled with clichés and one dimensional characters but most of the actors try their best with the script. So it sits in an uncomfortable spot with me to an average spot of boredom so forgettable because it is not bad or even good

The movie was fun, fast-paced and funny which is everything I need in a summer film. Furthermore the plot was both intelligent and understandable while weaving seamlessly into the Avenger's Universe. The reason I am not giving it a solid 10 is because people talked so fast and the plot moved so quickly in a few sections that I missed some minor yet pivotal details. Still, I got the gist of it and the producers did a bang up job making Ant-Man cool. Fair warning, there is a bit of swearing for a PG-13 film. Which is awesome. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To me this movie was "discount" Ben Affleck does another superhero movie. Yes I realize Ant-Man is played by Paul Rudd. He should be allowed near a screen, ANY Screen.

We are supposed to believe this former ex-con decides to become a criminal again only to find the "Ant-Man" suit. Then to learn he was manipulated into stealing it. Then to go on to fit yet another villain.

This story and script is a mess, too many holes, it's as if a studio head was standing there tapping their foot and saying "hurry up" we have to us this set to wash the parade floats for our Disney parade.

Equally as bad as Dare Devil, actually played by the real Ben Affleck. Wait for Red Box on this one.

Both Ant-Man and Spiderman put the viewer into the childhood fantasy of having super powers: this is what it would be like if I had super powers in the real world.

I've seen almost ten movies with 3D versions. Ant-Man is he first 3D movie I've seen that made 3D a benefit to me, made 3D an indispensable addition.

Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Superman, Batman are much more about costumes and brands. We see and experience them primarily from the outside. Ant-Man and Spiderman we want to and can experience from the inside.

Iron Man is somewhere straddling these two approaches. Ant-Man shows the script problems of Iron Man 3 into sharp relief. Where Paul Rudd's Ant-Man is a blank slate with very little personality, the "normal" calm center of an outer hurricane of events, Downey Jr's Tony Stark is a very colorful center of a hurricane of outer events in Iron Man 3. Too much. No healthy contrast. Can't have both the outer world be vibrant and also the inner character's personality as the two compete for our attention and affection.

Ant-Man the movie has just the right amount of crazyness without too much crazyness. Criticism of teh director as limp is ridiculous. These critics have never tried writing let alone directing a movie aiming to cover the tonal notes Ant-Man hits dead-on over and over.

Critics of Peyton's directing also have not learned the lesson of the the successes of the Tim Story Fantastic Four 1 & 2. The banter of four characters by the director of Barbershop is pitch perfect even if the drama suffered for those with more blood-thirsty tastes and needs.

I celebrate Ant-Man as the non-Marvel, Marvel movie. I think this is part of its intent. Guardians of the Galaxy also did a fine job of expanding the tonal palette of the Marvel world.

The highest compliment I can make is Ant-Man is as good and as much fun as the original comics were in my memory.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Marvel is now the Call of Duty of movies. They just do the same again, and again, and again...

This movie uses thoses jokes you could see in any bad comedy, but in this one it just happens that the protagonist is also some kind of third-class **** hero. They were so aware of this that they tried to show us how good the "hero" is by making him fight against an Avenger... but they used the incredibly boring and not-to-powerful Falcon. Bad mistake.

Don't spend your money on this trust me, try instead Trainwreck, much better comedy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ant-Man was actually a really good movie, one of the better movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as of late. Paul Rudd was perfect for the role and the rest of the cast did marvelous (get it?). The movie took a little while to get going and it had one of the same drawbacks that the first Iron-Man had (where the villain can operate his suit with no practice whatsoever even though a large portion of the film is spent with the protagonist learning to control his "powers") but once it got going, the humor, action, and excitement was non-stop. Surprisingly, there was a fair amount of emotion as well, which helped connect the audience to the film. Overall, it's a must see for MCU fans and superhero fans in general but I think casual movie-goers will also appreciate it. Expand

Scott Lang/Ant-Man: "Hello. I'm Ant-Man. Haven't you heard of me? No, you wouldn't have heard of me".

The story to Ant-Man is about Scott Lang who has worked alongside his friend and mentor Dr. Hank Pym but has never truly asserted himself. Now, armed with a suit that shrinks him in size but greatly increases his strength, Lang, now dubbed Ant-Man, will have to find the hero inside himself in order to pull off a heist that may very well be the key to saving the world.

The tiny superhero himself Ant-Man was originally going to be directed by the comedy genius himself Edgar Wright. Everyone and I do mean everyone was hyped about his next upcoming movie since this is the same guy who brought us such films as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. But one day we all got the sad news that Edgar left the protect due to Marvel and him not agreeing on each other. It was so disappointing because I wonder what the movie would be like if Edgar Wright directed it. The movie was originally going to come out in 2014 but got pushed to 2015 due to that big delay. Now after seeing the movie I was surprised of how fun it was and how it was a solid movie even with the behind the scenes problems it all payed well.

Since Edgar was out we got another director that stepped in and that's Peyton Reed who did such movies like: Yes Man, The Break-up and Down with Love. I was a bit worried but at the same time a bit interested of what Peyton Reed will do with Edgar Wright source material and after seeing the movie I can safely say that Peyton Reed did a great job directing this movie. He directed the action scenes and the whole movie pretty well since he never directed action movies before and this is he's first time and he did it good. Nicely done Peyton Reed.

I never thought that Paul Rudd would be great playing superhero character when he was cast as Ant-Man, but Paul Rudd absolutely nailed it as Ant-Man as he had the charm, the right set of humor to balance his character nicely and he was the perfect actor for this comedic character like Ant-Man.

The humor in the movie are the basic Marvel humor that you always see in there movies. Edgar Wright also wrote the movie and at times I can tell what jokes and humor was his, but some other writers change a lot of the script (That's what I heard) adding some of the Avengers characters in the movie and at the end credit scene which Edgar didn't want and I can see why. Now it is good to see one or even more of The Avengers in another Marvel movie just for a little cameo but you know why they there to only set up the future Marvel movies and that's it really. That's just want it is really just a set up for the next movie and not let it be a good stand alone movie without other Avengers coming reminding you about the future Marvel movies. But that's just me. It's funny how I kept bringing up Edger Wright in this review, but what can say the guy is awesome.

The action scenes in the movie are just so stunning to watch. The action was excellently shot and when the character Ant-Man shrinks to ant size and takes down loads of enemies it was just awesome to watch it and it was a very creative action scene. The CGI in this movie really helped those action scenes or just the scenes where he's in ant size and everything around him is a size of a giant. Those scenes in the movie are worth the price of seeing.

I also love how this movie brought up the one thing that people always say "Why don't they just call The Avengers". In this movie they explain that it only takes a small person to do this small mission so you really don't need The Avengers to do this one small mission. I just love how the movie brought that up as it's saying shut the f**k up to those who are complaining about that.

Evangeline Lilly, Micheal Douglas, Michael Peña and the rest of the cast all did great in the movie as they were funny and truly enjoyable to watch.

Now for the problems: The villain of the movie Yellow Jacket played by Corey Stoll was a pretty weak villain and was kind of a cartoon villain at times. I think Corey Stoll is a great actor and I mean he was good in House of Cards and Midnight in Paris, but here he was the cliche I'm evil to do bad things to people and to are my character. He wasn't awful in the movie but he wasn't such a good villain.

Most of the character's in the movie felt like plot device like Scott's daughter in the movie as I could tell for a mile away what she's going to do later on in the movie and it happened as I expected.

Overall Ant-Man is another Marvel movie that turned out great just like Guardians. I like how Marvel are taking unknown comics that people never heard of and making them into big hits and everybody loving falling in love with them. Ant-Man was a lot of fun to watch and I actually like Ant-Man a little more than Age of Ultron, yeah I went there. Never again can anybody doubt Marvel for they next upcoming unknown project as you all known your going to eat it up.

As expected jokes feel like a focus in this film but they don't forget about action, Parts of the film slow down a bit when story becomes a focus and it seemed difficult for them to find a good balance of the two. When the action does break out it is very entertaining, Seeing Ant-Man shrink and grow as he takes out a room full of guards is a sight to see and the end fight is insanely intense and comedic at the same time. There is also a few small ties to the rest of the Marvel Universe and it's characters witch is nice to see. There isn't much else to Ant-Man, Its a fairly straight forward concept that any Marvel/Super Hero fan will enjoy for sure.It would have been nice to see Edgar Wright direct the film but It still turned out OK. Despite Ant-Man being a superhero/heist film it's one of Marvels best. It has great exchanges between Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly. With great mini-sized action and excellent visuals.
Corey Stoll's villain character Darren Cross is my only problem with the film. He feels like Jeff Bridges' Obadiah Stane from Ironman again. He's bald like Stane and makes his own suit like Stane. And holds a grudge because his mentor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) didn't share his shrinking technology with him. When Stane was mad Stark didn't share his Iron suit technology with him.
Well you get the point; the villain could have been better. Spoiler: Plus I almost expected Evangeline Lilly to say "next time baby" about being Wasp "lol." Like Rhodes in the first Ironman. Since there is a slight first Ironman deja-vu but not too much at least. The movie mostly stands on it's own as a fun, cool and a pretty funny addition to the Marvel films.

He's recruited by Dr. Pym (Michael Douglas) to wear the super suit and lead an army of ants to save the world from a competing inventor. This latest Marvel movie has a lighter touch and goes for a more human connection. That means some enjoyable laffs and more chat than is needed for action films. When there is action, the miniature effects are fun and the sequences clip along at a snappy pace. Without Rudd's charm the movie would have "little" appeal. Even though it's entertaining, there's nothing especially incredible or original. NOTE: There are 2 post-movie teasers: 1 after the end title credits and the other at the very end. Expand

I found the story interesting, different and grounded. The action is not over the top and the visual effects are entertaining for sure. Once you get used to the whole ant situation (interacting with the ants I mean, and the diminutive size), you'll find it's actually very well executed and enjoyable. Even though the villain is somewhat lacking and the story is not as cohesive as I would like it to be, I think Ant-Man is the kind of film Marvel needs right now. A much smaller, yet humble, movie. Marvel’s first anti-mainstream movie in a smaller scale is here, and it totally stands out as a completely separate continuation of the MCU.

Ant-Man is a movie that perhaps is going to be one of Marvel’s smallest films from a box-office perspective. But even though the storyline is just as tiny as the Ant-Man himself; is the whole concept something entirely new to the superhero-genre. Sure this isn't a big, somewhat epic and an all knowing Avengers flick; no this is something completely else and it stands on its own, flawless ant-legs. My expectations were mixed before entering the cinema; yes both the Wright-predicament and the box office-performance did worry me, but the reviews did sound generally positive so I entered Ant-Man with a big-high expected smile. And after seeing it; well it’s definitely a great and almost flawless start of this new character into the MCU. My only concern about the movie are small things that could have been even greater, but let me first mention these aspects that should make you go and watch it, because it’s worth your time!

+ The heist genre is one big aspect, I really love these kind of movies and it gives the movie tempo and a real feeling to it. Just the excitement is excellent! From the look of the trailers may some people, including me, be concerned that Ant-Man might be a silly movie; I thought so but I’m glad I was wrong! It’s not silly at all, if it’s something well it’s definitely awesome with its unique concept and action! Another aspect is the characters; Hope van Dyne & Hank Pym is especially superb in this movie! Characters are one of Marvel’s biggest strengths and Ant-Man is no exception! The actors are just as stunning, not to mention the charming and non-forced dialogs that fits perfectly, even the jokes fits perfect! Ant-Man is also beautifully shot and visualized, not to mention the great CGI. Many do say that this is one of Marvel’s funniest movies, and I can agree that it’s funny, but not as hilarious as what the general public thinks. But sure the smart Marvel meta-references are hilarious and it really is a comedy from time to time.

- It might be flawless, but there are some things that could have been greater. First of all is the tempo. The first act felt a bit too slow and yes I did enjoy all the humor and character introductions, but I wanted to see more than that; more Ant-Man and even more action-sequences throughout the whole movie. I therefor wanted more speed, even though it still worked great for me. It’s the same with the climax; I wanted more and even more unique visuals than what we saw in the trailers. But it really is a hilarious movie with many unpredictable events! But some parts of the movie had too much clichés, especially the bad-dangerous-company-villain that we have seen in so many movies before. The soundtrack is another aspect; I never felt that the music defined Ant-Man and make the whole movie magical. Music can make everything greater, and with a stunning soundtrack that could define Ant-Man and make him epic, that's what's missing! But other than that isn't Ant-Man that bad really.

Sure it could have been better as certain places, but the aspects that really makes this new Marvel flick great is the (but sometimes overrated) jokes, the stunning characters, unpredictable and great plot and the (but perhaps too few) action-sequences. It might not be as hilarious as Guardians of The Galaxy, but Ant-Man stands out like no other Marvel-movie out there with its random nuanced jokes and a greatly unique plot. And even though it didn't live up all the way to my expectations, I'm still giving it a score of 8/10.

Ok Ill keep this short (relatively) Disclaimer up front I am a Fan boy, I have been reading the comics since I was a kid and have seen and enjoyed (almost) every Marvel film.

Ant man never seemed like a long shot to me because I knew the character and his history and was pretty certain that Antman could be done well.

Preamble aside, this film is awesome!! It is very funny, it wisely focuses on the second Ant man Scott Lang but by keeping Hank Pym as his mentor we still get the Genius of Pym in the marvel universe without his unstable mental state and darker character being the focus.

Hank actually works much better as a supporting character and Seeing as Marvel don’t have the rights to Mr fantastic he clearly is being lined up to be the Marvel universes OTHER tech Genius.

In the comics hanks Mind was often more important then him actually being a hero in the field so this makes sense.

But back to the review as I said this would be short (lies!!).

This a great film, it has heart, its very funny, it gets the tone of Antman just right and prevents it feeling silly by not letting things get to Serious.

Everything is well structured and paced and apart from the first 20 mins or so being a bit slow while they set all the characters up it's very nearly the perfect marvel movie.

As a long term fan it pleased me greatly but I can see Antman working equally well for more causal audiences thanks to great performances from every one involved, a few genuinely touching moment, some hilarious jokes and set pieces and......

The action!! Seriously the way they use the shrinking powers is fantastic it creates some truly unique spectacle that we really haven’t seen before (Honey I shrunk the kids has nothing on Antman) and a few set piece moments that left me with a big cheesy grin on my face.

Obv everyone has there own opinion but I struggle to think how anyone with even a passing interest in these types of films wouldn’t have a blast with Antman.

So Yeah awesome, also it leaves it open for much more insanity and awesomeness to come, As it hints in the film that there is much more to Hank Pym (the OG Antman) then just shrinking and by extension the new Antman. Hank has some truly great tricks up his sleeves in the comics so it will be interesting to see where this goes.

Antman has become My second Favourite Marvel Standalone movie Slotting in Behind Captain America: The Winter Solider and just ahead of Guardian’s of the Galaxy! Bravo Marvel BRA****ingVO!

Ant-Man does not divert from the Marvel script at all and certainly finds a place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (at least this one is self-aware). Yet, it manages to be wildly entertaining and one of the funniest Marvel movies yet. Paul Rudd turns in a super charismatic performance as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man and Michael Douglas is very good as Hank Pym. As with all Marvel movies, the villain is pretty non-descript. However, the visuals are top-notch and the special effects are very well done throughout. A film that works well as a heist movie as well, Ant-Man pleads for you to care about its characters by playing on emotion and family. Though this fall flats, the film is fun and funny enough to overcome it. This is in large part due to Michael Pena who is hysterical here and honestly steals the show. If anybody needs a larger role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is obviously his character. Overall, Ant-Man is a well done superhero flick that will entertain people who like the Marvel formula. If you are tired of superhero movies, this one won't restore your hunger. Expand

Ant Man tries to do something different to break from the mould like 2014’s GOTG, but doesn’t end up accomplishing it as successfully.
Ant Man is a reasonably fun and self-aware action film that will entertain, but it doesn’t bring anything too unique or astounding to the table here. This feature being a heist film instead of a standard superhero film is a nice nuance that works well and Paul Rudd as the lead was a good casting choice; but most of the rest of the characters are pretty plain. The most entertaining characters are Rudd and his fellow thieves, and this probably goes down well due to the chemistry between them. Personally I think they didn’t get enough screen time.
Michael Douglas’ Dr Pym is quite a boring and typical character, nothing being wrong with Douglas’ acting here but his character is just too plain. His daughter is pretty average too, playing a daughter who hates her dad but will help him with this heist; oh and she also knows kung-Fu just for some plot development. The chemistry between these two doesn’t seem entirely there and so their scenes fall flat, but this isn’t just in part to the actors, the script is faulty for that (will explain after character section). Finally Corey Stoll’s character is so one dimensionally evil that he ends up becoming a pretty forgettable villain. It seems like when you’re watching it you are witnessing Frank Underwood inside Peter Russo’s body that is obsessed with science instead of politics. He does have a sweet-ass suit though.
Now onto the script, for the most part the heist mechanic worked well with Rudd and his crew but once it gets him into the Ant Man suit and he starts hanging around Douglas and Lilly’s characters it seems that the pages for these scenes got coffee spilt on them and they had to improvise half of it. The back story and clunky exposition behind Douglas and Lilly’s characters are so force fed to you it’s cringey, and to watch the sudden admiration/attraction that grows between Lilly and Rudd’s character is just clichéd and monotonously delivered. The scenes slow down majorly until a certain encounter involving an Avenger; which was an absolute blast. After that nothing too interesting until Rudd’s team arrive back on the job allowing some comic moments and then the finale- this finale also fully embraces its silliness and goes all out delivering probably the best sequence of the film. There was a small gap that seemed so forcefully put in the finale though that it detracted from the excitement for a second but then went straight back into it. One thing I must say though is the ending (NO SPOILERS) on how a certain character figures out how to come back from somewhere seemed like complete **** with how easy there character manages it.
Lastly, the visual effects of this film were pretty nice, although at times they could look a bit plain and out of proportion but overall the effects looked great and made for some really hectic action sequences.
The film is a fun comical ride but it hasn’t done anything new, and the main reason I’m guessing reviews are so high is probably because everyone is loving to get on the Marvel band wagon nowadays. I wouldn’t say avoid this film as it is enjoyable but don’t expect anything special. A worthwhile watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The concept of subatomic theory was indeed, marvelous. Hank Pym as the old character was quite a good twist as well. I have no problems with its story.

However. . .

Having the ability of shrinking to a size of an ant (or maybe much smaller than an ant) is quite intriguing but quite nonsense when the soldiers engaging Ant Man. He shrinks, people should be wondering where he is. Not like "Oh he shrinks. With my naked eye, I could actually see him". It's already states clearly to the audience. The suit is a myth. Heck, not even the guards should know the existence of the suit. Why did they act like they knew the existence of the suit? And the most illogical scene is where Darren Cross shoots the hell out of the flies. He can accurately shot Anthony with his naked eyes. Human naked eyes. Is that even logic? MCU should do better than this. And because of this nonsense, I have to say no.

The editing is slightly affected by two obvious jump scenes in the beginning of the film and the emotional engagement of the characters is slightly rushing but given the limited 2 hours running time, the progression of the plot is rather fine linking to MCU by covering the background, science, encounter, relationship between characters and mission to fight the villain. Paul Rudd leads a charming performance as Antman, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly also offer some surprise as supporting casts while Corey Stoll as the antagonist is a bit underdeveloped. The CGI and action sequences are at a smaller scale, the shrinking cinematography is outstanding together with scores composed by Christophe Beck but being a less darker superhero film, Marvel has once again delivered successfully. No complaints about the special effects or the photography. The cast is also perfect. Michael Douglas does an awesome job as Dr. Hank Pym; Evangeline Lilly is really hot; and Paul Rudd is Ant-Man, period! The weakness is in the script. It's uneven and spends too much time on Ant-Man's personal development and not enough on the villain, Darren Cross (Yellowjacket) played superbly by Corey Stoll. The movie does a poor job of expressing the urgency of preventing Cross from having Ant-Man's power. And because it spends so much time on Ant-Man's training, the movie starts to get tedious, albeit for a short time thank goodness.

Overall, I totally recommend this movie especially in 3D. I just wish the villain had been more developed so that I cared more about the climatic battle.

the movie though was too short, yet the movie was just enough to get me hyped for the Marvel fever, that probably is endless. Paul Rudd is perfect to be part in the Marvel universe playing the small time crook who seeks redemption by becoming a small-time hero that is the exact opposite of Marvel's gigantic Hulk.

Not as great as Guardians of the galaxy though its was action packed for the whole family and also hilarious I highly recommend it to moviegoers and Marvel fans who haven't seen it yet its a hit!

But let me tell you, the third act of this movie is the most fun I've had In a marvel movie in ages. The humour was there, the action was there and all the characters finally felt like they were a key part of the heist, even yellowjacket (who to be honest is the biggest dick in the marvel universe) seemed to have a developed character by the end of it all. He actually turned from a cliché 'end of the world' type of idiot villain to a truly psychotic and mentally damaged person who wouldn't even spare a child. Brilliant movie, tons of fun. Overall this is a great film with some fantastic writing by Edgar Wright who always seems to write amazing films (Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim ect) and is probably the most fun film of the year, but its slip ups (Sometimes with pacing and characters) do drag it down, but not by much. Well they did. The science was believable within the handwavium they put in place (except the subatomic part... I mean the tech in the lore decreases the space between atoms not decreases the size of atoms...) But other than that I could suspend belief and enjoy the movie.

The acting was very solid, the comments were funny and the special effects were good. This movie is worth seeing, and was worth the price of admission.

Evangeline Lilly is actually painful to watch in many scenes. Michael Douglas looks and sounds like Gordon Gecko hiding out from the IRS. Finally, Paul Rudd's smug charm should be pretty good in this sort of comic-con summer fare but it feels like he's struggling, even slightly disinterested. One positive: might be nice to see Michael Peña do more comedic material; at least he seemed to be enjoying himself.

This tired plot device of each film referencing other Marvel touchstones like the Avengers, Hydra, Stark Industries, etc. only works if those other films are successes in their own right. Not sure how many Ant-Man quips we will hear from Captain America.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally, Marvel's 'Ant-Man' has arrived, after what seems like a lifetime of promises and troubled development. More a low key and scaled down outing compared to 'Age of Ultron', it commits to a restrained approach, as it should, being an origin story centred around a heist concept.

First up, let's talk about the action. The effects were fantastic, even in the 2D screening i saw. The fight scenes are, although not mind blowing, more inventive and fun than what's been served in recent MCU releases. There are great uses of everyday environments and devices (bathtub, vacuum cleaner, record player) in the first shrinking scene. In the third act, we see our hero riding flying insects while dodging bullets, causing a giant Thomas the Tank Engine to crush a cop car, fighting Yellow Jacket in a briefcase while The Cure's 'Disintegration' plays on an iPhone (yes, all this happens).

How about the performances? Paul Rudd as the leading man is a good fit, a likeable down on his luck guy thrown into the battle between SHIELD and Hydra. Michael Douglas is great, and his relationship with Evangeline Lily is played out beautifully.

Now all that is fine, but there are problems that let the film down. In trying to keep the tone in line with the rest of the Marvel universe, there's a look of bland direction to much of it. Structure and pacing wise, at times it's too fast moving and later too drawn out. Try not to notice the score, which sounded like uninspired drivel. Another weak villain is introduced, this time played by Corey Stoll, almost a rehash of Jeff Bridges from 'Iron Man' but without the presence.

Marvel's basic **** humour once again rears it's ugly head at the most inappropriate moments. It's not clever, just unbelievably irritating. Michael Pena and his criminal colleagues are truly awful stereotypes here, too busy throwing around cliches like "dayumn" and "yo son" while the white heroes are saving the day. If you've read some of my other reviews on Marvel films, you know i don't let this kind of borderline racist crap pass!

At the end i was left wondering, is this a character that really needed a standalone film? Sure it's a welcome change of pace, however it's more filler than killer. The premise of a tiny hero who controls ants may seem problematic for some, but the real issue is that too many cooks have come and gone in the kitchen.

'Ant-Man' is a good old weekend entertainment for a film, a heist film if that's what you like.

The latest feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe follows the story of a veteran hero named Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) who has created the technology of a suit that can shrink as well as the human being inside it. He needs a daring man to wear the suit and save his business from the evil Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) who is attempting to develop the similar kind of technology of shrinking suits.

The man Hank needs is Scott Lang (Paul Rudd, overflowing with charisma), what we know about Lang is that he has been arrested a few times for burglary and is trying to re-build a fading relationship with his daughter Cassie.

'Ant-Man' is more of a heist film than it is your typical, bombastic superhero film, ('Avengers: Age of Ultron'), but it's hard to stay mad when it gives you a great amount of character development and there is more substance than I thought there would be.

But why did I give it 6/10? This is mainly because there are many, many references to "The Avengers" which did feel forced and shoehorned into the film, this has something to do with the fact that Edgar Wright, who was tipped to direct but backed out because his vision of the film didn't have many references to the Avengers.

The villain was also very cliche and another forgettable one in the Marvel canon. The plot also resembles 'Iron Man' (2008), the idea of a businessman creating technology of a superior suit and there is another eager businessman creates a similar kind of technology to use it against them. Basically, it's a whole, "Apple iPhone vs Samsung Galaxy" story, and we have seen it before.

All in all, 'Ant-Man' is worth watching, it may not be the most superior entry to the Marvel canon, but fans will be satisfied.

I can't think of a film that I've ever been more confident in giving an "8". It's incredibly good, but not great. What is it missing? that certain something. Largely it fails by having very little emotional complication in the film. ScottI can't think of a film that I've ever been more confident in giving an "8". It's incredibly good, but not great. What is it missing? that certain something. Largely it fails by having very little emotional complication in the film. Scott Lang, in the film and the comics, has a problem getting his life together. But the comics adds a layer of despair that the film glosses over in order to make a more fun summer film. There's nothing wrong with this, but a pop-music movie can only earn so many points in my eyes. For the extra points, they really have to reach for some emotional truth. Guardians of The Galaxy did this by delving a little bit into Starlord's heartbreak over his mom's death and Rocket's grief over Groots death and anger over being a science project.

Good movie, fun time. Go see it, but don't expect greatness.

It's definitely a change of tone from the typical Marvel movie, which actually works to its benefit. Our hero is not some super ultimate being that's able to destroy anything with sheer strength or firepower, rather he's an average Joe with a great talent for breaking into secure places who comes across a rather unique suit. I found myself constantly smiling throughout the movie. Not only are the side characters hilarious with their shenanigans or propensity for drawn out anecdotes, but the action sequences themselves have a lot of humor to them. The visuals are amazing, and the use of the ants themselves were creative and fun. The concept of a superhero controlling ants could have turned into something really stupid, but Marvel in all their genius pulled it off perfectly. I was cheering for ants! Can't believe it...

Unfortunately, my major problem with the film was the villain. I don't know if it was the actor who played him way over the top, or if it was written way over the top. Every scene with him made me feel uncomfortable. So much so that it made me lower my score on a film that should be higher. Also, the final fight with the boss felt like it borrowed from the first Iron Man movie. Our hero in his new super suit fights an evil corporate guy with his better equipped super suit. Definitely done more creatively, but I did notice.

Honey, I shrunk the safecracker - Ant- Man is no fantastic voyage. The furor over Affleck’s Batman allowed an underwhelming Rudd to slip into his superhero suit unscathed. No matter how hard they try to make a mountain out of an ant hill - caper, characters and conversations fall flat. If those of age toss back a shot everytime they hear the word "daughter" or "hero" - you might enjoy the last fifteen minutes- where only size matters. Expand

Antman was a bit of a surprise, I wasn't expecting to be overly impressed (similar to how I felt going in to see Guardians of the Galaxy) and really thought it would be much of the same from Marvel, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but IAntman was a bit of a surprise, I wasn't expecting to be overly impressed (similar to how I felt going in to see Guardians of the Galaxy) and really thought it would be much of the same from Marvel, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I just felt like it was a bit "out there". However, I quickly learned that this wasn't your typical Marvel flick. The movie has a different 'feel' to it which makes it strong. Quirky humor, great plot, easter eggs and good miniaturized action scenes make it a must see for anyone even a little interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Expand
