Ant-Man is one of the Marvel comic universe's more obscure characters.... And there's a very good reason for that.
One of the biggest problems with Ant-Man, not just as a film, but as a character as a whole.... Is that his backstory, motives and development are things we've seen before. The annoying thing is that this is mainly down to the necessities of fitting the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Unlike Captain America, where they took the comic's origin story and brought Cap' into the modern age via the 'frozen in ice for 70 years' idea, in Ant-Man they try to dispense with the original story altogether.

In this film, the 'Ant-Man' is effectively the second incarnation, the original being the 'old guy' scientist whose origin story would have been far more interesting. Instead we get a convoluted narrative that suggests a new 'Ant-Man' is needed to combat the machinations of the 'old guy' scientist's former assistant who is attempting to duplicate his miniaturisation processes.

What follows is a 30 minute training montage, involving more technology whose invention is never explained (i.e. the ability to control various species of ant), and then the 'surprise' discovery the young scientist is looking to sell miniaturisation tech to the army for profit, now he's worked out how to make things smaller....

Cue Ant-Man's heroic infiltration of the bad scientist's research facility, you know, the one bearing the name of the 'old guy' scientist who was ousted from the board etc. And the finale between Ant-Man and young scientist who has shrunk himself in his own combat suit.....

It's sooooooo predictable as to be patronising!

However, it's not all bad. Paul Rudd displays his usual comedic sensibilities as the 'hero', and Michael Douglas is also good as the 'old guy' scientist. Their interplay is very funny. Rudd's three criminal sidekicks are also good value, except that Michael Pena's Mexican Stereotype characterisations which do grate immensely very quickly!

Overall, it's a paint-by-numbers Superhero flick, but one that does benefit from a superior comic-interplay between the main characters.

Highly recommended and in case 2 hours wasn't enough there's two post credit sequences cause that's a thing now apparently. Expand

No complaints about the special effects or the photography. The cast is also perfect. Michael Douglas does an awesome job as Dr. Hank Pym; Evangeline Lilly is really hot; and Paul Rudd is Ant-Man, period! The weakness is in the script. It's uneven and spends too much time on Ant-Man's personal development and not enough on the villain, Darren Cross (Yellowjacket) played superbly by Corey Stoll. The movie does a poor job of expressing the urgency of preventing Cross from having Ant-Man's power. And because it spends so much time on Ant-Man's training, the movie starts to get tedious, albeit for a short time thank goodness.

Overall, I totally recommend this movie especially in 3D. I just wish the villain had been more developed so that I cared more about the climatic battle.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed this more than expected, but that's only because my expectations were not very high.

Ant-Man is a relatively minor character in Marvel comics but there's no telling how much of a role he'll play in the MCU. That's kind of where the problems (minor character) and the good parts are (MCU involvement).

This movie, when it didn't revolve around the Avengers or anything involving the rest of the MCU was a pretty ordinary superhero movie. What set it apart was Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas. Both play their characters very well. I liked the idea of Scott Lang (Rudd) being a burglar that Hank Pym (Douglas) was watching for a while. Inevitably Pym teams of with Lang through Michael Peña's character (good choice) getting a tip to break into Pym's house.

I enjoyed a lot of the moments and the comedy wasn't too over the top. But where this movie falls short is where a lot of other superhero movies fall. The villain. Basically, just like almost every other superhero movie, the hero is fighting a different version of himself. It's a tired and overused character at this point.

I'm interested to see where Marvel takes this character within the rest of the MCU, but this film also has me a little worried for the upcoming Doctor Strange and Black Panther standalone movies. I have no doubt that Marvel can make them work within an ensemble but unfortunately their stand alone films may be a little weak.

After the excellent CAtws marvel has fallen back into it's tedious grinding franchise ways again with AAOU and now Antman.

Marvel know Antman is a weak movie and seem to try to combat this with blundering references to all it's other movies, cameos, and end of credit scenes avid fans need to see to get ready for the next movie churned out of the franchise factory.

Clunky comedy, a dull lead, an even duller villain, and aptly a CGI and steals the show from the wooden cast. Only a cool Michael Douglas kept me interested as I sat there.

the best thing I can say about Antman is it's not as bad as Terminator Genisys.

I was kind of bummed that this movie didn't go for the usual Marvel formula, but at least the movie did a good job in generating some laughs. And Paul Rudd's performance was appealing. I can't say there weren't parts that were particularly uninvolving but it got better over the second half of the movie. The villain is clearly one-note, and it doesn't seem like a character that anyone would like simply because he wears a badass yellow jacket (pun unintended). However, beyond the dazzling visuals, great cast and entertaining action, there was actually some easter eggs to be found, but the one that most excited me was the reference to Spider-Man in the end of the movie. As a Spidey fan, I'm looking forward to the new reboot produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures.

So... my take on "Ant-Man"? It was a solid movie, and if you're a fan of super-heroes, this film is watchable for you.

In part ‘Ant-man’ feels rather fittingly like a typical Paul Rudd comedy which happens to involve a heist and people dressing like superheroes which is where it’s at its most effective, but parallel to this runs a formulaic Marvel origin story that ticks all the necessary boxes without offering anything particularly memorable.

It seems like Marvel’s careful planning to ensure a family-friendly tone and narrative that adequately bleeds into the rest of the Marvel universe has resulted in a film that doesn’t take many risks, perhaps this is the cause and consequence of ‘Ant-man’s’ many production problems involving replacing directors and constantly changing scripts.

When risks are taken you get unique action sequences based on the comedic value of shrinking characters along with the heart of the film in Paul Rudd’s lead performance, backed up hilariously by his “Three Stooges-like” companions.

The Bottom Line…
Safe and sometimes clichéd, ‘Ant-man’ lacks the punch of some other Marvel outings but what it lacks in scale it makes up for in humour and charm, given all its production issues it seems like Marvel have done a commendable job in introducing a character that can quite literally slot into any space in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Genuinely funny moments but, ultimately, a sub-par film with a half-baked heist. If only it could have been a comedy with some action (a la Scott Pilgrim) rather than an action movie with some comedy. Standard Marvel money-maker.

With a script that seems more interested in the MCU as a franchise than the film itself,"Ant-Man" commits the one sin an action-adventure movie cannot: it's boring.

Ant Man tries to do something different to break from the mould like 2014’s GOTG, but doesn’t end up accomplishing it as successfully.
Ant Man is a reasonably fun and self-aware action film that will entertain, but it doesn’t bring anything too unique or astounding to the table here. This feature being a heist film instead of a standard superhero film is a nice nuance that works well and Paul Rudd as the lead was a good casting choice; but most of the rest of the characters are pretty plain. The most entertaining characters are Rudd and his fellow thieves, and this probably goes down well due to the chemistry between them. Personally I think they didn’t get enough screen time.
Michael Douglas’ Dr Pym is quite a boring and typical character, nothing being wrong with Douglas’ acting here but his character is just too plain. His daughter is pretty average too, playing a daughter who hates her dad but will help him with this heist; oh and she also knows kung-Fu just for some plot development. The chemistry between these two doesn’t seem entirely there and so their scenes fall flat, but this isn’t just in part to the actors, the script is faulty for that (will explain after character section). Finally Corey Stoll’s character is so one dimensionally evil that he ends up becoming a pretty forgettable villain. It seems like when you’re watching it you are witnessing Frank Underwood inside Peter Russo’s body that is obsessed with science instead of politics. He does have a sweet-ass suit though.
Now onto the script, for the most part the heist mechanic worked well with Rudd and his crew but once it gets him into the Ant Man suit and he starts hanging around Douglas and Lilly’s characters it seems that the pages for these scenes got coffee spilt on them and they had to improvise half of it. The back story and clunky exposition behind Douglas and Lilly’s characters are so force fed to you it’s cringey, and to watch the sudden admiration/attraction that grows between Lilly and Rudd’s character is just clichéd and monotonously delivered. The scenes slow down majorly until a certain encounter involving an Avenger; which was an absolute blast. After that nothing too interesting until Rudd’s team arrive back on the job allowing some comic moments and then the finale- this finale also fully embraces its silliness and goes all out delivering probably the best sequence of the film. There was a small gap that seemed so forcefully put in the finale though that it detracted from the excitement for a second but then went straight back into it. One thing I must say though is the ending (NO SPOILERS) on how a certain character figures out how to come back from somewhere seemed like complete **** with how easy there character manages it.
Lastly, the visual effects of this film were pretty nice, although at times they could look a bit plain and out of proportion but overall the effects looked great and made for some really hectic action sequences.
The film is a fun comical ride but it hasn’t done anything new, and the main reason I’m guessing reviews are so high is probably because everyone is loving to get on the Marvel band wagon nowadays. I wouldn’t say avoid this film as it is enjoyable but don’t expect anything special. A worthwhile watch.

Looks like the Marvel catalog pillaging by the studios is starting to expose the weaker source material. There is nothing innovative about the story or characters in this comic book outing. Evangeline Lilly is actually painful to watch in many scenes. Michael Douglas looks and sounds like Gordon Gecko hiding out from the IRS. Finally, Paul Rudd's smug charm should be pretty good in this sort of comic-con summer fare but it feels like he's struggling, even slightly disinterested. One positive: might be nice to see Michael Peña do more comedic material; at least he seemed to be enjoying himself.

This tired plot device of each film referencing other Marvel touchstones like the Avengers, Hydra, Stark Industries, etc. only works if those other films are successes in their own right. Not sure how many Ant-Man quips we will hear from Captain America.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally, Marvel's 'Ant-Man' has arrived, after what seems like a lifetime of promises and troubled development. More a low key and scaled down outing compared to 'Age of Ultron', it commits to a restrained approach, as it should, being an origin story centred around a heist concept.

First up, let's talk about the action. The effects were fantastic, even in the 2D screening i saw. The fight scenes are, although not mind blowing, more inventive and fun than what's been served in recent MCU releases. There are great uses of everyday environments and devices (bathtub, vacuum cleaner, record player) in the first shrinking scene. In the third act, we see our hero riding flying insects while dodging bullets, causing a giant Thomas the Tank Engine to crush a cop car, fighting Yellow Jacket in a briefcase while The Cure's 'Disintegration' plays on an iPhone (yes, all this happens).

How about the performances? Paul Rudd as the leading man is a good fit, a likeable down on his luck guy thrown into the battle between SHIELD and Hydra. Michael Douglas is great, and his relationship with Evangeline Lily is played out beautifully.

Now all that is fine, but there are problems that let the film down. In trying to keep the tone in line with the rest of the Marvel universe, there's a look of bland direction to much of it. Structure and pacing wise, at times it's too fast moving and later too drawn out. Try not to notice the score, which sounded like uninspired drivel. Another weak villain is introduced, this time played by Corey Stoll, almost a rehash of Jeff Bridges from 'Iron Man' but without the presence.

Marvel's basic **** humour once again rears it's ugly head at the most inappropriate moments. It's not clever, just unbelievably irritating. Michael Pena and his criminal colleagues are truly awful stereotypes here, too busy throwing around cliches like "dayumn" and "yo son" while the white heroes are saving the day. If you've read some of my other reviews on Marvel films, you know i don't let this kind of borderline racist crap pass!

At the end i was left wondering, is this a character that really needed a standalone film? Sure it's a welcome change of pace, however it's more filler than killer. The premise of a tiny hero who controls ants may seem problematic for some, but the real issue is that too many cooks have come and gone in the kitchen.

I’m curious to see what the original script Edgar Wright wrote was because knowing him it would’ve been funny, smart, original, and madly entertaining. Instead, we are left with the most formulaic story Marvel’s ever written that while not bad has been seen before in several Marvel films. If the film had interesting characters like Guardians of the Galaxy or great action like Pacific Rim or The World’s End (seriously great action there) those flaws could be overlooked but unfortunately none of the characters are interesting and the film fails to do anything interesting with the heist premise or take advantage of the shrinking concept to provide creative action and visuals. As a result, Ant-Man comes across the way The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America come across for some people it just exists to set up another Marvel movie. Similar to The Wolverine, the end credits scene, the second one as the first one reveals something obvious, teases a bigger and more interesting movie and hopefully that makes up for it because if this is the approach Marvel will take to all non-Avengers films going forward then I grow increasingly worried about how they will treat future additions such as Dr. Strange and Spider-Man. Die hard Marvel fans will probably be satisfied with the film as the loud family behind me was but those looking for something special will not find it here just sneak in for the end credits scene, the only good part of the film, and/or wait for the DVD if you are curious. 'Ant-Man' is a good old weekend entertainment for a film, a heist film if that's what you like.

The latest feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe follows the story of a veteran hero named Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) who has created the technology of a suit that can shrink as well as the human being inside it. He needs a daring man to wear the suit and save his business from the evil Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) who is attempting to develop the similar kind of technology of shrinking suits.

The man Hank needs is Scott Lang (Paul Rudd, overflowing with charisma), what we know about Lang is that he has been arrested a few times for burglary and is trying to re-build a fading relationship with his daughter Cassie.

'Ant-Man' is more of a heist film than it is your typical, bombastic superhero film, ('Avengers: Age of Ultron'), but it's hard to stay mad when it gives you a great amount of character development and there is more substance than I thought there would be.

But why did I give it 6/10? This is mainly because there are many, many references to "The Avengers" which did feel forced and shoehorned into the film, this has something to do with the fact that Edgar Wright, who was tipped to direct but backed out because his vision of the film didn't have many references to the Avengers.

The villain was also very cliche and another forgettable one in the Marvel canon. The plot also resembles 'Iron Man' (2008), the idea of a businessman creating technology of a superior suit and there is another eager businessman creates a similar kind of technology to use it against them. Basically, it's a whole, "Apple iPhone vs Samsung Galaxy" story, and we have seen it before.

All in all, 'Ant-Man' is worth watching, it may not be the most superior entry to the Marvel canon, but fans will be satisfied.

This latest Marvel movie has a lighter touch and goes for a more human connection. That means some enjoyable laffs and more chat than is needed for action films. When there is action, the miniature effects are fun and the sequences clip along at a snappy pace. Without Rudd's charm the movie would have "little" appeal. I'm not against action; I enjoyed Spectre and Force Awakens and other superhero movies such as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 and the first Avengers movie, but there was nothing like the entertaining relationships of Avengers or Spider-Man in this film, and somehow the personal story (which revolved around Ant Man's desire to see his daughter, which his ex-wife wouldn't let him do because he hadn't paid child support which he had not been able to do because he'd just gotten out of prison) and its connection to the action wasn't convincing to me. It may have had to do with the lead not having adequate charisma or chemistry with anyone. It really just all came across to me as a bunch of noise. I think the musical score should have been a lot better too. It came across as generically bombastic. One bright spot was Michael Douglas, especially the way they made Michael Douglas in the first scene, which takes place in the past, appear so young. That was a fun bit that lasted a few minutes.

Overall a harmless movie for kids - not a shred of realistic violence; it's all pretty silly violence and no one gets killed - or bad language, and it's not a cynical movie either. But aside from being kid safe, I can't recommend it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From the start I had a feeling this wasn't going to be good. With the other Marvel movies, even if they weren't good films, the trailer at least made it seem fun. But with the Ant-Man trailer I saw nothing to pique my interest. The good reviews gave me hope that the movie was good after all but I should have trusted my gut instead.

Now, as I look back on Ant-Man, the only thing that comes to mind is the boredom I experienced sitting in that theatre. The story has no stakes. They must steal the Yellowjacket suit and destroy Cross's work or else... what? Vague threats about how "things will be bad" are not at all exciting so I didn't really care about the plot.

More time is spent on drama between Hope and her father when focus should have been on the main character. And speaking of Hope. Previously I would have said that the romance between Thor and Jane is the worst of the Marvel romances (though I haven't seen the second film) but this just takes the cake. It is not established at all through out the film and the kiss at the end just comes out of nowhere.

And to think - last year we got Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy. This year it's Avengers 2 and Ant-Man. So much disappointment.

Few camera angle changes and it's fine next thing you know stark hands the guy a tissue for the now yet again bloody nose. Not looking good. Well let's put aside the fact how wasp got very little scree time although I do like how they referenced the costume change from black and red to black yellow at this moment if you have seen the film but didn't watch the secret ending you'll be thinking what's this guy on about like many naive people who where in the cinema with me. Shame on you. Ok now it's time for yellow jacket. Yellow jacket was Hank pump in the comics which screws up the plot line with cross I got a few strange looks in the cinema when Yellowjacket was first introduced and I tried to claw m eyes out and the rest of the looks where in agreement with my pain. I mean how on earth does marvel turn this around thanks to the secret ending of avengers 2 we know that the suit stays in good hands so we knew how the fight was going to end or was just me putting far too much thought into it? Anyway the secret ending ruins the fact how pym used to be wasp for a short while. Not to mention no giant man / Goliath I mean what where they thinking! Who can put on a materminuplation suit in 10 seconds never mind 4! Oath and ohms line "your hitching a ride out side there 5 block perimeter" your the size of an ant they could have national guard waiting for you unless they are the size of an ant too it doesn't matter. And the helmet is meant to control the ants not an ear piece. Ramble finished as a movie it was decent as a comic book movie meh. Expand

The actors do a good job (not that any of them ever get any chance at shining in any of these Marvel films though, at least compared to blockbusters like Planet of the Apes or Hunger Games for example).
Ant-Man is probably the wrong superhero to bring on screen, it just is a little bit laughable.

It is just simply a meh movie, Marvel's formula is becoming stale now, one liners left right and center, just too many jokes. I loved the heist aspect of the movie, as it kept the movie fresh and not just a typical action movie. Douglas was great as Pym and Rudd was fantastic as Ant-Man. The easter eggs were great and the fight with Falcon was good too, Marvel have done a great job at building this universe.

Ant man's villain.....Ugh, Marvel can barely get a villain right other than Loki, hopefully Thanos doesn't continue this trend. Overall it was an enjoyable movie to watch, it just didn't wow me like other comic book movies have.

Insanely overrated. Once it hits video, the ratings will plummet unless Disney pays for reviews.

Movie is insanely boring. More boring than the last 2 Avengers. Its not horrible, not but nothing was great about any of it. Special effects are nothing special by todays standard, the story was very bad and the antagonists were completely unbelievable and not in a funny way. Since the bad guys were so stupid, it destroyed the plot and frankly, I was hoping Ant Man would die in the end. The romance angle was equally unbelievable and both actors were simply not enjoyable to watch. The entire move was a cliche and a bad one, the cliche being that comic books have no depth and are cheesy thus its funny when you a make a movie that way... it isnt. And not all comics are written by idiots like the Avengers, Iron Man and now Ant Man. Since I basically fell asleep during this film, I am going to rate it slightly below average (average on Metacritic is a 5).

Bullshingles.

After watching Guardians of the Galaxy which I thought was great, and Avengers Age of Ultron which was alright, I was starting to think that maybe these Marvel films are finally starting to get better. But now they made this thing to not have me too excited for the future.

The film starts and the first thing that throws me off a bit is how awful it looks. Just terrible colors, bad lighting, bland. We're introduced to Hank Pym who created the Ant-Man suit, and the villain of the film who in typical Marvel fashion was a very bad uninteresting villain. And also Scott Lang who's the main character. Hank Pym and Scott Lang were both alright but I didn't really care about them during this film. Paul Rudd as an actor shows promise though. I liked him. The first 20 to 30 minutes were basically setup. It takes a lot of time before Scott finally decides to do a break-in and find the Ant-Man suit. Interestingly the movie felt the need to set up the villain a lot longer which was pretty weird.

So it basically takes 30 minutes for anything fun to start happening. The break-in scene was pretty good and neatly edited and Scott testing out the suit was also pretty cool but didn't last very long. Hank training Scott was decent, but the movie kept going back to the villain who was s*it. The thing with these origin stories is that you know there's never really gonna be any cool superhero stuff where the superhero would know what they're doing until like the climax of the film. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Iron Man is a great example of how to do an origin story right. This movie's not. This movie's just decent to below decent after the novelty wears off. I did not feel like I was watching a movie from the same studio that made the first Avengers and I definitely didn't think I was watching a set up movie that's literally adding this character to the Avengers too. This film was painfully uninteresting, generic and looked way cheaper than the other Marvel films from the second phase at least. Having a more original backstory definitely would've helped and investing more time in to the writing and effects would've probably made this feel more like a film that belongs in this Marvel universe.

It passes on too much time explaining the basic things (like how Hank can't get along with his daughter) and too little time explaining the supernatural things (like how he can freaking communicate with ants, or how he build a shrinking suit using 1980s army gear). I mean at first it shows us some dude turning into a wad of red goo in the fraction of a second, then we're expected to laugh at main character's comebacks a la Adam Sandler, and finally there is a 10 feet train and a 5 feet ant lying around where the hero fought some idiot who has millions yet he doesn't mind doing generic villain acting in a suit that looks like Power Rangers upgrade... and in between, Scott tries to kiss the girl. Is that a family flick? Is that a superhero flick with occasional blood and gore? Is that a sitcom? Nope. Just "Ant-Man".
That's what you get when you blend them in together. Though rest assured, Marvel fans - it didn't ruin the franchise.

The pacing is good in the first half and rushed in the second, which may be a consequence of the rewrites, who knows. Plenty goes unexplained but the pieces fit together nicely enough, a snug click but not an exciting clack. Michael Douglas beats the toy train for Official Highlight of the Film. Hank Pym has been conspicuously absence from the new Marvel movieland and I’d rather watch him ferreting around in a lab coat and telling people they’re full of **** for two hours than see another scientist fight his own ego while wearing a Mega Man suit. Ant-Man, as obscure a superhero title as has been released since the inception of the so-called "MCU" (Marvel Cinematic Universe), may test the perception that Marvel can do no wrong. The general public knows Spider-Man, Iron Man, CaptainAnt-Man, as obscure a superhero title as has been released since the inception of the so-called "MCU" (Marvel Cinematic Universe), may test the perception that Marvel can do no wrong. The general public knows Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, and The Hulk, but they don't know Ant-Man. And, unlike what happened with Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel hasn't carpet-bombed pop culture with a marketing blitz. So Ant-Man has to stand on its own merits with only the Marvel brand to differentiate it from, for example, Green Lantern.

The movie tries to offer something marginally different from the run-of-the-mill superhero origin story. It's hard to say how much of Edgar Wright's original vision remains in the final product, but the tone is more jokey than that of most Marvel movies. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to make it through the entirety of Ant-Man's two hours without thinking of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids as least once, and I'm not sure that's an association the filmmakers were courting.

Narratively, tone differences aside, this follows the "origin story" formula with little variation. With the exception of an unfortunate deus ex machine plot point, every beat of Ant-Man is predictable. The movie is engaging in the same way as a generic romantic comedy: we know exactly what's going to happen at every moment but there's some comfort in that. Ant-Man contains some compelling scenes (there's a great fight sequence between the title character and someone more established from the MCU) but there's nothing innovative in terms of content or how it is presented. Ant-Man scampers along with a "been there, done that" vibe. The attempts at overt comedy are hit-and-miss. The heist elements are derivative and not nearly as inventive as one might expect given the possibilities. The action sequences are variable and the dramatic moments… the less said, the better.

Despite having buffed up physically for the part, Paul Rudd is an unlikely choice to play a superhero. His character, Scott Lang, is intended to be an "ordinary guy", and the actor imbues Scott with the most ordinary of traits: he's kind-of boring. The defining factor in Scott's life is that he wants to be a good dad. After spending some time in prison (he once earned his living as a Robin Hood-inspired cat burglar), Scott has a lot to make up for. The problem with this backstory is that the screenplay never sufficiently cultivates the relationship between Scott and his daughter for us to really care. As played by Abby Ryder Fortson, Cassie is a one-note "cute" movie child that the filmmakers fail to develop. Her scenes with Rudd don't gel. This is a critical rent in the film's dramatic fabric.

Ant-Man feels overlong, with a lion's share of the screen time devoted to the obligatory scenes of Scott learning his "craft." We get the expected training montage; I suppose no superhero origin story would be complete without this. There's a quasi-romance between Scott and Hope that comes out of nowhere and goes nowhere. Ant-Man is hyper-aware of its place in the MCU. It name-drops shamelessly and features several appearances by characters we have seen before. The overall effect is to remind us that there was a time when the MCU was less crowded and more fun. Stand-alone superhero movies have no place in this universe anymore.

Ant-Man isn't "bad" in the sense that many movies are "bad." It's just lackluster - a diversion with no staying power. The lead character is interchangeable with any number of Grade B superheroes - his unique "power" doesn't make the results or the means to achieve them sufficiently different. It wasn't that long ago when superhero movies took chances. (Remember The Dark Knight?) Now, they are risk-averse. That's perhaps the most disappointing thing about Ant-Man.

For comic book fans, the addition of Ant-Man to the Marvel family will undoubtedly be greeted with high-fives and cheers. The movie, however, doesn't give the rest of us a reason to care. As the post-credits caption informs us, Ant-Man will return, although it's likely he'll be back as part of a team. This is an appetizer and like most meager fare, it doesn't satisfy. Let's hope the main course, when it comes, offers more than these warmed-over hors d'oeuvres.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review was previously posted on my blog, so apologies if bits don't make sense on another site!

Recently, I’ve been watching the MCU films again. This is mostly due to the run-up to Avengers 3. I haven’t felt the need to do reviews for most of them, but since my last post was semi-related to this film, I thought I might as well review it.

As mentioned in my previous post, Edgar Wright was briefly involved in this film. As a fan of his work, this naturally elevates the film for me. While I can’t know exactly what the director was involved with, you can still clearly see his fingerprints on the finished product. The editing is also brilliant at times, keeping the pacing of the film quick. A great soundtrack is present, and some comedy moments actually work, unlike my usual experience with recent Marvel movies. Unfortunately, the OST is a disappointment. This seems to be a frequent problem with most Marvel films. Can you, dear reader, remember an original song from a Marvel film? The only one people seem to be consistent with is the Avengers theme, which is rather odd; you have a cast of such varied and unique characters, and the music could really reflect that. Instead, songs feel like they could be taken from one film and added to another, and nobody would notice a difference.

The cinematography is decent enough. There’s rarely anything mind-blowing. Most of the highlights come from various jokes relating to the ever-changing size of the protagonist. Sharp cuts to reveal how mediocre the events occurring actually are happen frequently, and almost always to great effect.

The dialogue was middling. The film falls into a painful trap, where the mentor character dumps a full scene of exposition onto our uneducated protagonist. It’s rather frustrating given the fact that most viewers have already pieced the plot together. We don’t need a recap. Also, there’s various moments where lines are clumsily delivered. I don’t know it’s that’s due to the actors or the writers, but regardless, parts simply don’t work.

The actors in this film are also interesting. There’s very few poor performances, but at the same time, the writing can often let people down. Evangeline Lily is probably the most consistent of the performers, and Corey Stoll (ignoring the dodgy dialogue and poor writing) is perfectly fine as our antagonist.

Also, rather oddly, the film seems to slip between originality and cliches rather easily. Ant-Man relishes in the standard scenes of a ‘shrunken person’ film, with small things being scarier, almost being stepped on and apocalyptic baths all being present. At the same time, however, moments are peculiarly mature. The protagonist isn’t much of a hero. He’s a convicted criminal who’s just gotten out of jail. His partner has separated from him, and found a new lover, who is now acting as the father figure for their child. When I first watched the film, I expected it to end with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd)’s wife realising she really loves our protagonist, and has done all along. They’d get back together, and Scott would get full custody of his child again etc. Instead, it takes a far more mature route, and Scott finds a romantic interest of his own, while still remaining on good terms with his previous partner and her new lover.

Typically, the film has quite a few random issues. There’s a jarring absence of blood, despite characters being shot. There’s also moments where it’s clear we’re meant to be feeling some sort of emotion (and perhaps I’m just a sociopath) but I felt little to nothing at the ‘sad moments’. Also, the villain is simply awful. Again, however, this is annoyingly common with Marvel movies. Still, was a villainous Jeff Bezos the best they had to offer?

The film is ultimately bland, but perfectly serviceable. It’s an incredibly average Marvel movie, with depressing glimpses of real inspiration. I’ll give it a 6/10. If you’re a Marvel fan who’s yet to watch it, and are curious as to how important it is to the overarching MCU plot, I imagine you can skip it. The next film in the series, Captain America: Civil War does feature elements of this film, but it’s not really mandatory viewing. Still, if you have the time, there are worse ways to spend it.

Reed keeps throwing away the opportunity and Rudd keeps pulling it back in, this tug of war is pure fun.

Ant-Man

Reed's comic book film is more like a high budget-ed season finale of a sitcom. There is levity in its body language that seems God gifted. While the actual reason is, of course, co-writers like Edgar Wright and Adam McKay and Paul Rudd himself, along with the director Peyton Reed whose previous project has been of such genre. And yes, as far as the film cares for the joke, the punch line, it is of course difficult to beat this chapter, I think it would even surpass the second Iron Man. But there is always so much they can give in on humor, especially with a banner as big as of Marvel whose film evidently goes to places where not the average one does. And packing this mixture of diverse genre is where this Christmas gift goes wrong.

There are so many moments where you can see the lack of awareness between the screen time and the script, for instance, after Rudd finally manages to conjure the art of commanding an army of ants, the family drama that is ensued seems out of place, maybe the director's cut has the answer for it. The now-ripped Rudd fits right into the role from self-created quirkiness to how-to-train on a training montage, his carefree attitude still cracks me up.

But only until, Michael Pena hadn't arrive with a referential talk that he does so casually, his inevitability on not-evolving as a character is the best arc to it. Speaking of evolution, Evangeline Lilly never gets to experience that nor does Michael Douglas, in that case, their family drama despite of the past they have been through, seems monotonous and poorly crafted. Ant-Man is not a title nor a concept that would convince you to barge in on their heist, but once you do, your lazy bones would go stronger and you'd know that the film had succeeded in its entirety.

Paul Rudd normally provides an assured performance but this proved to be an exception. I am so confused at what point this movie went so disastrously wrong. The biggest failure of this movie is not its concept and not (for the most part) the deliverance or performances, but rather the script. For every cheesy one liner was met with a sigh and eye roll. If your movie relies on poorly scripted, draining, and uninspiring one liners to make it engaging, you need to scrap that draft and start again. That is genuinely what I think should have happened, they should have started again, introduced more contemporary/original comedy, discovered a new plot, and re-casted for some characters. I will give credit where credit is due. It does take a unique kind of skill to make a large budget seem so cheap. The source material was unique I guess. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this an amusing watch - it features some decent CGI and amusing plot elements - I wouldn't say it takes itself too seriously, thankfully as I'm not entirely keen on such superhero type films. This was categorised as an action comedy film, so I thought I'd give it a watch when it was on TV and I found it entertaining enough. I tried to second guess what might happen in the plot and there were one or two plot twists. Of course, like most superhero type films, it has the underdog element to it - it is a bit cheesy I suppose but I found it entertaining regardless.

Michael Douglas playing the doctor (Dr, Hank Pym) with some less than commendable goals in mind did well in being the main villainous type character, or certainly at first. I'm not sure if I've seen him play many such characters but he did well as the scheming type I'd say. Meanwhile, the main character of local criminal, average joy type Scott Lang is played by Paul Rudd and he also gave a pretty decent performance as a confused yet enthusiastic type. He does seem clueless and if I were in his shoes, I can understand why!.

I thought it was quite an engrossing film for a Marvel superhero type film - it reminded me a little of the early 1990s 'Honey I Shrunk The Kids films', only with better special effeects, for obvious reasons. I suppose its a bit (I said a bit!) like a sanitised kid friendly version of The Fly, in a sense, only the character becomes an ant, rather than a fly, obviously.

Its not a bad watch - not greatly memorable but not boring and with decent visual effects, I'd say this is a cautious 4 star watch overall. Its a little cheesy and possibly somewhat predictable but its an easy, light watch, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Would I recommend it? if you like these sorts of films then yes. As a straight comedy film? no, not really. I wouldn't say its an all out action film as such either, although there are some decent scenes featuring action - its primarily a comic book/superhero film, with one or two morals in it but its not shoved down your throat too much. Hopefully this is enough to help you judge whether its worth you seeing it or not.

Characters were likeable and actors did a good job (except Scott's crew). Characters had great chemistry and each one had an emotional core to them. Action was creative not in the presentation but in the smaller hero aspect was very creative especially climax. Story was predictable and film overall was cheesy. It had tonal problems like an emotional scenes and then joke. Villain started out kinda fun but then he turned into generic marvel villain. Film had no style. If Edgar Wright stayed at the project it would be much better. It was fun but standard nothing groundbreaking nothing awful. Expand

The ant man movies fell very low budget in comparison to the other MCU movies, but it's stil ok, and the characters are likeable

This was solid. (But the fact that the sequel has a higher average score than this film is sad to me)

The action scenes are cleverly designed and offer a unique perspective on the world, as we see them from the ant-sized viewpoint. However, the film does fall short in terms of character development and emotional depth, which leaves the audience feeling somewhat disconnected from the story. Overall,
Ant-Man is an enjoyable and
lighthearted film that is perfect for a
casual movie night.
