This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where should i begin? This movie absolutely makes no sense to me. Its plot is stupid, but visuals are very good. This movie tries to be a link between Alien and Prometheus, but it loses its track very soon. Actors are playing like amateurs and the story is garbage. Music and Visuals are great. Watch your 1st movie again,Mr. Scott, than give it another try. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who grew up with a pretty dark childhood, horror movies hold a special place in my heart. At an early age, they put a face to the horrors I experienced. The original Alien movies were, and still are a personal favorite of mine. And before you ask, yes, even Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection are included. While I was not a huge fan of Prometheus (I sat there for its entire run-time waiting for the millisecond the alien was present post credits), I was ecstatic to hear that its sequel (and prequel to the original Alien movies) was going to put the Xenomorph, or a version of it, at the forefront.

The film opens with David having a conversation with his “father”, Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) about his birth and place in the world. David (Michael Fassbender) appears to be suffering from the same daddy issues that were prevalent in Prometheus. After some pouting about how he will never be able to create offspring due to being a synthetic, we are introduced to the Covenant and its crew.

The Covenant is transporting a few thousand colonists to a new home world for a fresh start. After a rouge meteor strikes the ship and kills some colonists and the ships captain, Branson (James Franco), the 2nd in command Oram (Billy Crudup) takes over. As soon as he does, a strange distress signal consisting of garbled music by the great John Denver from a nearby planet is picked up by the ship. The writers chose to touch on the captain’s religious faith, which is never really explored, but I believe this hints to a faith that believe that God came from space and eventually came to worship the Aliens in Dark Horse Comic’s Aliens vs. Predator comic series. Contrary to the some of the teams’ advice, Oram chooses to visit the planet to evaluate it for possible human inhabitants or colonization.

Once on the planet, members of the team start becoming ill from small spores and stuff hits the fan. I found it funny that just minutes after being on an uncharted planet with no living creatures to be seen, they take their helmets off and breathe the unknown atmosphere. After an initial confrontation with the Xenomorphs, they are saved by David, whom has crash landed on this planet after the events of Prometheus.

The remainder of the film showcases the struggles of the team on the planet and the lack of communication between the remaining members of the crew hovering in space above the planet. While it’s an enjoyable film, once the alien is added to the story, it suffers from some pretty major pacing issues. The true horror of the situation doesn’t begin until the last 30-40 minutes of the film, but when it finally hits, it doesn’t let up.

Technically, director Ridley Scott offers some amazing special effects, both practical and CGI. My major complaint with the film is, much like Prometheus before it, the technology featured in the film is far more advanced than that in the original Alien films that take place after this. While not overly distracting from this film, it does make you go ask why. Additionally, the insight into the creation or evolution of the Xenomorph is never fully explored. What’s left is more questions, and even less answers as to how they evolved from what we saw in Prometheus to the Alien shown in the older films that followed this. In my humble opinion, this film would have served better as part of a new trilogy in the Alien franchise, which would have explained the technological advancements as well as left room for the evolution of the creatures. The fact that the aliens at the beginning of the film emerge from the host fully developed without the use of eggs, looking more like a cat than a snake, seems that the creatures de-evolved into the Xenomorph we all know and love.

The cast put forth believable performances, with Michael Fassbender (pulling double duty as 2 synthetics) and Danny McBride being standouts. I was concerned with the casting of McBride due to his previous roles primarily being comedic, but he was a pleasant surprise. The real stars of the movie, the Xenomorphs, look as terrifying as ever and if anything, deserved more screen time than they received.

While not a perfect film, Alien Covenant is a welcome addition to the Alien franchise. Despite its shortcomings, it is an entertaining experience. With its surprise twist ending, I can only hope that Ridley Scott’s inevitable follow up offers more answers and resolves some of the prequel’s many plot holes.

Very intriguing movie, but many holes in story. This film was supposed to give answers about the Alien universe, but gives more questions. Great work anyway.

The huge spaceship can't the unknown signal is accepted, and the space suit can? Or the team lands on the unknown planet (which professionals, and everything have to know about colonization of new planets) without SPACE SUITS. And everything could be forgiven and told that the film was shot by the author Ridley Scott. But he contradicts himself. As xenomorph can escape from a breast of the victim of everything in a couple of hours if in the original movie it happened much later? The movie disappointment which scoffs at the Universe exhausted trash like Alien vs Predator. Expand

Sure, it might not be Alien or Aliens, but it sure as hell is much better than Alien 3, Prometheus or Part 4.
I loved how Scott made everything look modern, yet still retained the same style as in Alien or Aliens. Like the computers, the design of the ships, the sounds of the computers, even the mentality of the people were straight from the 70s or 80s.

I really am excited for the next movie.

Prometheus was never a perfect film, nothing ever is. But it offered us a new take on theAlien Covenant is the prime example of what happens when a studio and a director effectively bow to the hardcore fanboys and ignore genuine criticism. Prometheus was never a perfect film, nothing ever is. But it offered us a new take on the Alien universe, which was a welcome change after the four decades of non-stop xenomorphs in games, novels, comics, TV series and movies. Ridley himself even stated that he viewed the xenomorph creature as "cooked".

But it seems like most people unfortunately didn't like to leave their comfort zone and started crying about the fact that no xenomorphs showed up in the film. Fox Studios and Ridley Scott focused entirely on that instead of the genuine criticism offered by more level-headed movie-goers such as the bizarre character choices, plot induced stupidity and just not very good writing.

And the result is Alien Covenant. A film that very clearly is having an identity crisis. You can almost see the scalpel Fox uses as they try to desperately cut off as many references to Promtheus as possible, wrapping everything up in a quick, unsatisfying way so that the touchy fanboys don't have another fit.

Things wrong with Covenant:

1. Virtually zero character development.

Most of the characters in this film are there to get murdered. Simple as that. So the movie makes practically zero effort in developing them. The first time I went into the film, I never even knew the crew was made up of couples until someone either died or openly stated "my wife". One very crucial scene that actually gives these meaningless sacks of meat a smidgen of development is not even in the movie. It's on YouTube. The Last Supper plays very similar to the first Alien where the characters have a laugh round the table. It even has a character choke on their food and someone say "The foods not that bad". In this scene, we can clearly see who is with who and they get a little more personality. Why was this scene not in the film? This would have made it less confusing and might have made us actually care. Maybe they had to cut it out to include that god-awful shower sex scene.

The main character Daniels (we don't even know her first name) is bland. She is another Ripley wannabe, with practically no motivation apart from she wants to build a cabin on a lake. Compare that to Shaw from Prometheus, who had a variety of interesting qualities and motivations as to why she wanted to meet those who created Humanity. A far more interesting character.

2. Plot induced stupidity.

Once again we are introduced to a gaggle of morons on a spaceship, who surpass the stupidity of the previous films crew with flying colours. Say what you like about the Prometheus guys, at least they wore helmets at the start.

This clearly shows that Ridley and Fox took literally nothing on board from the last films genuine complaints and only listened to those who cried about xenomorphs. The stupidity is back and it is kicking it up ten-fold. The characters in this movie make mindbogglingly thick decisions, ranging from walking around on an unknown planet without any protective suit on, trampling and sticking their faces over alien plants, opening locked quarantine doors that have hostile creatures inside and following an obviously insane android down into a dark cavern to become alien food.

Honestly if someone had told me this was a spoof of Prometheus, I would have believed it 100%. It's so obvious that the characters are being stupid purely to get the aliens in the film and it is detrimental to the overall experience.

3. It wraps up the Prometheus story in the most insulting way.

Shaw and the Engineers are dead. Killed off in a blatant attempt to get rid of the Prometheus plotline entirely. I was so utterly disgusted when I found this out. It felt like I was watching Alien 3 for the first time again.

I was so looking forward to seeing more of the Engineers as a species and Shaws interactions with them. An interesting storyline snuffed out to appease the xeno fanboys. It disgusts me how Scott weakly admits that trying something new was a bad idea. Shaw was a developed protagonist. She had interesting motivations and qualities and she actually was turning into a badass by the end of Prometheus. All of that development, gone in the blink of an eye. Replaced by a generic Ripley wannabe who is a piece of dry bread compared to Shaw.

4. David creating the xenos

Thankfully the books make it clear he didn't since it messed up the lore and made the aliens a lot less interesting. But the film seems to purposely imply he was the one who created the species. The book is basically damage control for this pile of steaming horse ****

All in all, Covenant is a well acted, well shot and very pretty looking awful movie. I hope Scott retires from the franchise and it is never touched again. You tried and failed twice now, stop this before George Lucas gives these prequels his stamp of approval.

Yes, script/dialogue, plot, and plausibility could all be tighter, but in general this was a great addition to the Alien franchise. But I doubt at 80yo Ridley Scott will be directing any further installments. I wonder who will take it from here...

While Prometheus was all about exploring creation, man's complex relationship with it, and the possibility of a creator, this sequel to it uses Ridley Scott's fantastic Xenomorph creation to take the series more back to it's horror rootsWhile Prometheus was all about exploring creation, man's complex relationship with it, and the possibility of a creator, this sequel to it uses Ridley Scott's fantastic Xenomorph creation to take the series more back to it's horror roots while still asking some philosophical questions along the way. The themes this time are still centered around creation, but the focus is more on human error. The fallacy of our ways. The dangers of our constant quest for progress can bring. Even some creator vs the created tension as well. The best part of all though is that serves as a return to form for the Alien series, bringing the menacing Xenomorph back into our lives.

Scott wastes little time in letting the blood flow. There are plenty of brutal kills and the usage of gore is so excessive that it reaches B-rated, schlocky levels of fun. Scott once again gives us the total experience of a slasher film set in space. His scenes of grander destruction are gorgeous. Ridley Scott proves once again to be one of the masters of the science-fiction genre. His immaculately crafted plot and beautifully created scenery are incredible. The latter proving to be the right amounts of alien and historic in appearance.

The movie also served to increase my appreciation for Michael Fassbender. His dual performance here is nothing short of incredible as he is portraying almost two completely different individuals. Both of whom are most well-written in the movie. For a movie already strong in plot, action, and character it is amazing just how much Fassbender does to bolster all of it's strengths and abilities. He takes things to another level and the movie goes to show his outstanding ability as an actor. He's not the only notable person onscreen though. While everyone else is pretty much playing the standard character roles one would expect in this kind of movie, there is Danny McBride really stepping out of his comedic comfort zone in favor of a surprisingly emotional performance. After Fassbender he is the next best person onscreen.

Covenant proves to be a welcome return to form Ridley Scott and the Alien series he created. It builds on the groundwork laid by Prometheus, leading to much better results and continues the story of it masterfully. This is the Alien prequel we've been waiting for. If the writing has one flaw it's that the big twist at the end is totally predictable. I would also say that the big finale relies a bit too much on action over horror, but overall those complaints are minor in comparison to everything else going on. Bloody good fun and surprisingly deep to boot, Alien: Covenant is not to be missed, longtime Alien fans or newcomers alike.

So what we've got here is a move that is worse than Resurrection, but better than Prometheus.
Here's why:
First, the crew are morons - just like in Prometheus - and outside of the core survivors (heh) are mostly forgettable (you'll understand at the end, don't worry).
Most of the big plot "twists" are visible from half the movie away, while the smaller ones are still blindingly obvious from a quarter of the screen time away. Unless you've literally never watched a movie before, you'll see it coming. And it doesn't help that most of the attempts to be philosophical are heavy handed, ham fisted, and obvious (and dull). Again, if you have a brain in your head, you'll see what I mean.

Finally, on the negatives, there's the fact that a lot of events (not just crew related) don't seem to really follow much in the way of logic. In terms of suspending disbelief, make sure you've had some practice on the highwire, as for this film you're operating without a safety net.

Bad stuff out of the way, let's get to the juicy stuff - respectable CGI, and Ridley Scott is on par for his usual spectacle, shock and awe. That said, for my tastes I'd prefer him to return to his previous attitude of "only use CGI if physical props/effects are impossible" as his prior efforts in previous films with physical effects/props have infinitely more presence.

Another good point is Michael Fassbender. He straight up rescues most of this film, so make him your focus. I rarely hate a character as much as this - by which I mean he is a very good villain of the modern sort, and thus Fassbender is turning in a brilliant performance. Pity the script is so weak, but he's still brilliant in this film, so get your kicks here.

Third - Alien design, and everything relating to it which appears in this film, including the callbacks to the lesser Prometheus flick relating to this subject. This is some very nice work. Fourth - gore. Lots of it. And it's not your lazy gore either - the body horror (one key scene in particular) is fantastic here, and while most of the rest of the film never quite reaches this same high note on this topic, it still does a pretty good job. Again, when you see it, you'll know.

All in all? A movie some some interesting raw material, but ruthlessly let down by bad script, weak crew characters, and obvious "twists".
In regards being better than Prometheus, this is simply the case of it having more personality in regards Fassbender, and the Alien, rather than it being better in regards script, crew, or logic.

Certainly seems true here. But to Ridley Scott’s credit, he’s killed the Alien prequels in half the number of films it took to end the sequels. Alien: Covenant clocks in at just over two hours, and I can honestly say in all that time I didn’t see a single original idea up on the screen. It was all a re-mash of every other Alien. A collection of clichés that failed to work on every level. I was neither engaged by or interested in any of the characters. The setting was a joyless, grey vista that no one in their right mind would want to colonise. And the Alien had zero menace about it.

As the ‘twist’ ending played out, I was left wondering how Scott managed to pull off such a masterstroke with the original film. Was he just a lucky chancer who happened to be in the right place at the right time (a la George Lucas and Star Wars)? These first two Alien prequels certainly remind me of the Phantom Menace etc. – all CGI style and no substance.

The only slightly redeeming feature here was Danny McBride’s character. He wasn’t quite as cardboard as the rest, and certainly not as irritating as David/Walter, with their ridiculous diction and stilted movements. Rumour has it there may not be any more Alien Prequels. Thank goodness for that. The beasty itself might be very difficult to kill, but not so much the franchise. With the prequels’ clumsy father/son subplot, it’s fitting that the man who gave birth to the Alien is also the one who’s killed it. Nice one Ridley.

No one has heard our screams (requests) yet

"Alien: Covenant", remake and simultaneously prequel, is the latest entry in the saga of "Alien." The most recent feature film, under the leadership of Ridley Scott, is repulsive and intriguing when it wants but slow, abstruse and tragic when not realize that it is. Despite the fact that it boasts about the progression of the mistakes previously made—factor that to some extent is true, at least visually—, the story of the crew reiterates falling into other vices that impede equating to the sci-fi horror bible as is the original "Alien".

Basing on the usual narrative biotype, Scott—father of the saga— conceives the story on which horrific creatures evolve with a wide list of screenwriters. When you hear the name of more than two scriptwriters in the conception of a work, the reviews mostly tend to be unfavorable; It's really unheard of the project that manages to jell and fit all the ideas in the same plot with satisfaction. Here, Hollywood fixation about stuffing of elements a tale is present in the complete screenplay, more not in the sketch of the traditional story.

The protagonist, a capite ad calcem, is Michael Fassbender, who performs two characters worthy of praise. Fassbender decides to further explore his acting skills under a hard gestural and vocal force by portraying, respectively, androids David and Walter. The first one is a synthetic human model assigned to the crew of the USCSS that served as a guide and the second one is the most brand-new incorporation into "Alien" universe, Walter is the greatest triumph of trial and error in the creation of androids, being the first of a better-forged species than David 6's. Fassbender ratifies why he is one of the best actors of our century, thanks to the roles given by Scott.

In times of "Wonder Woman", Katherine Waterston's aim (Daniels) was neither to conquer nor emulate the original heroic lady interpreted by Sigourney Weaver, her character, always according to her, must be an example of thinking strength of women, of their aptness in any human field, of building hope and faith and a model role for future leaders; to emphasize the attitude of females in a sexist Hollywood, plainly. Her purposes have been fulfilled, but also, they have been notoriously distorted by external expressions. And the new problems come to light. Attenuation of philosophical load, so characteristic of the saga being the promoter of its existence, is restricted to a ten-minute deep prologue where Walter and his creator refute on gods, origins and art matters. Another terrible mistake is the extremely long introduction–more than sixty minutes—to put us in the atmosphere of the characters, more than half of its initial act could be cut. However, the biggest mess is that indicated in the preceding paragraph. In addition to having a prestigious Oscar award by its special effects, in USCSS Nostromo movie the appearance of the aliens is scarce, thus, horror comes out of the tension of the situation, of the alert state that aroused a sudden jump of the alien, even, spaceship interiors produced uncertainty and insecurity, the famous and masterful suspense by which the work is praised. The flaw lies in the decision of Scott about redeeming himself with the short participation of the xenomorph on the screen, he sins due to innocent because although the first aftermath of the lethal virus in the body of a crewmember is frightening, disgusting and surprising, this pace begins to wander, a back and forth between scenes, leaving as the chief source of supposed terror to the alien, fantastically created by CGI, causing a suspense lack in the plot, unfortunately, affecting in the prediction of the final cliffhanger, however, concerning this, it leaves a feeling of wanting far more, blessed Walter!

Independent of the flaws of "Prometheus", "Alien: Covenant" amend some of the issues of the previous installments, however, adds many others placing the film in a limbo, in a loop. This movie fails to be classified under horror genre—despite its delectable gore— rather, it's an audio-visual sci-fi production that raises questions that no one requested and, in the end, doesn't respond the already proposed ones. Having as a measure of the quality Scott's previous films," Covenant "is far from being like the original movie, however, the way of introducing, artistically, the questionable story is fascinating, a paradise where they won't hear your screams, although, we're doing it. "The Path to Paradise begins in Hell", right now, we're going to the real hell, in all the extension and effect of the word.

Some of the scenes were pretty intense and creepy. The plot was typical for an alien movie although they turned it into this whole creationism thing. I would recommend watching prometheus again just to refresh everything before watching this.

The tension & build up from the two infected people to the outbreak is great. The Gore is wonderful; love the Shower scene. 90% of CGI is really good. The Fassbender Twist is extremely obvious but I still like the ending Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers: Just an Amazing film, i don't normally like horror films but love the Alien Franchise. it was full of twists and turns, and some of the best scenes just send shivers down my spine... Literally. there is a load of lore in this film and some of it needs you to piece it together as it goes along. one of the parts where one of the most significant forms of the Xenomorph, The Facehugger hugs one of the crews face while another tries to free it off him and succeeds but at the cost of some acid burnt skin and his own life as one of the main Xenomorphs prey's from above, the guy with the acid burnt skin runs of and survives... this scene just had me in a paranoid state through the rest of film thinking did the Facehugger lay the egg, or was it unsuccessful... it was the first as it took longer burst out later in the film. David (the original from Prometheus) returns as he was stranded on the home world of the "Engineers" which Shaw and David pursue at the end of Prometheus which Shaw "Died" on impact with the world. now one part (SPOILER if You didn't read before... idiots), Walter (new David) is fighting the old David because David was obsessed with creation and experimentation with the Xenomorphs studying them with the numerous subspecies. David was the reason Shaw died, and when everything was going Walter's way during the fight with him being better, it cuts black... now this is when everything goes out of hand, David stabs and kills Walter successfully unlike before, takes Walter clothes and portrays him making Shaw and the rest think its Walter when its not. That's how the ending happens, Daniels finds out when she starts to go into cryosleep, which now that David is running the ship Covenant, he puts 2 facehugger embryo's into the freezer and that's when it ends. now that makes me excited for the 3rd film. Prometheus was great and so was this film. sorry for pointing out the obvious but its for the people who don't know what happened at those parts for the delusional. worth the see and the gore makes it better on the way the necromorphs evolve and how the original Big Chap is formed. It happens to Prometheus as well. Alien (1979) shines not only in lead characters but also the crews. Covenant is weaker in the portrayal of the heroine compare to Prometheus, but thanks to Michael Fassbender (once again) great acting able to strengthen her as a character. Story wise, it all very much alike to Prometheus in a good way. I personally think that any fans or casual movie goers should definitely give this one a try. This movie is clearly a continuation of the PROMETHEUS one... where they transformed a sci-fi horror series into a nonsense boring terror movie that make the Alien fans wants to sleep in the middle of it. And they kept the same boring, senseless and uninteresting style on Alien Covenant.

At all, is a HUGE disapointment to all fans of the franchise...

I'm of two minds on this one, much like Ridley Scott seems to have been. He wanted to continue the origin story he started with Prometheus, continue to explore what the search for answers entails and the mysteries it has over us. But he also knew that this time around, he had to deliver the Alien goodness or audiences would get all pissy again and wouldn't understand the point of it all and blah blah blah (it wasn't called Alien: Prometheus for a reason).

So here we have a typical Alien type movie setup with a big spaceship and slumberers awakening from their cryo comas too early and then exploring some desolate planet where of course the **** hits all kinds of fan. Things gestate, parts burst, there's blood and violence. But the thing is, Scott's heart doesn't seem to be in these scenes. They almost feel as if they've been directed by someone else (perhaps Luke Scott, his son, the 2nd unit director)? They're almost mindless in their CGI flash-cut matter of factness (is there anything worse than CGI Xenomorph?). Nothing surprising or engaging or even remotely resembling the kind of terror on display in the original Alien - just flashiness and shininess and fastness.

But then there's this other movie all mixed up in it that's a more direct sequel in line with what Scott was doing in Prometheus. It involves David holed up on this world creating life, studying life, becoming a God. There's strange architecture from the Engineers (indelible), philosophizing and eroticism and genuine intrigue and mystery. It's about the creation of horror by a rejected and alienated creation trying to discover its place in the universe (turtles all the way down) and it's far more interesting than the generic space creature movie that keeps popping up.

It was a valiant attempt to blend the two but it doesn't work because you get the feeling this wasn't meant to be an Alien movie in the first place (we already have that/those) and Scott didn't really want to do that. But Scott is nothing if not smart about his business decisions - Fox funded it and audiences were interested again at first, more so than they would have been if it were Prometheus 2 - and he got to at least make part of a movie he was interested in. Let's hope for a third, one that audiences can engage with on its own terms.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I, like many others, got really excited when Ridley Scott decided to return to the Alien franchise, a film that to this day stands the test of time and is still one of the greatest science fiction and/or horror movies of all time...

Then he gave us Prometheus, one of the worst films I think I had seen at the cinema at the time. It looked stunning but was full of terrible plotholes and incredibly poorly written characters - not to mention it turned what was one of the scariest creatures in movie history into a joke... created from magic space goo...

Spoilers for Covenant follow:

Alien: Covenant comes along and we start to think that Scott has learned his lesson, he knows Prometheus was terrible and he has listened to the feedback from the fans... The xenomorph is back and we're going to see how the Engineers created them... NOPE! What an absolute mess of a film... The first 30 minutes was dedicated to the tragedy of space sails, followed by holographic distress beacons... Then the entire crew (bar I think 3, if I recall correctly?) was sent down to the planet (no room for precautions here) and we're subjected to a lack of safety protocols (which made the Prometheus crew at least look competent) and weird albino aliens that grow once again from magic space goo into full blown adults in about 12 minutes. We're left with a flashback showing that David (somehow now fully repaired and looking brand new after being decapitated) randomly decides to just kill all of the engineers... He is somehow immune to the aliens (despite the fact previous films have shown androids getting attacked, see Bishop) and can act as a father figure (this makes sense in the same way animals can attach themselves to the first thing they see, however the alien is fully grown and still sees David as "papa Smurf")...

Then we're left with people dying, 1 by 1 in very poor and generic ways, until the reveal that David made the aliens (kinda, I mean the chestburster is now a teeny tiny alien rather than a chestburster so you could argue that these are not the Xenomorphs we know and love!) - which leads to what is left of the crew (including the new android who is more powerful, can superheal and other things) going back to the ship (because we see David, killed by his doppelganger off screen so we KNOW it can't possibly be David going back to the ship, RIGHT?!) - and then once again we are left with a fully grown Alien on a spaceship, only thanks to the much more advanced technology (despite it being a prequel) we see the alien on cameras and on a map and you know where it is at all times...

And then the "strong female" character, who isn't a patch on Ripley, Sarah Connor or other strong characters from the past, decides to work out if David is David when she's already entered a cryo pod (she could have just, I dunno, looked for the stab wound from earlier seeing as David doesn't have super healing)...

The film is not only poor in terms of action and suspense, but it doesn't feel part of the universe it's proud to reference - there's far too much CGI (when practical effects could have been used) and the technology feels centuries ahead of what you see in the previous movies, where we had a "random beep every 12 seconds" in Alien we're given an almost fully rendered hologram of Dr Shaw...

There's no horror elements as you're fully aware of where the alien is at all times, there's no suspense because all of the big setpieces are either in broad daylight or overly CGI and there's no mystery because everything is just so generically overdone.

If you want to see a GOOD follow up to the Alien franchise please check out the game Alien Isolation (If you're not a gamer I'm sure you can find some good rundowns and videos on YouTube or Twitch) which both respects and honours the source material but also adds a story of its own...

I am not clued in with sales figures but I truly hope this film has failed to make money so that we don't get a saequel... Please either leave the franchise alone or bring in someone who hasn't lost their touch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Predictable, monotonous and worst of all: a total lack of charisma and strength in each and every Covenant character.
For me it was disappointing, Ridley had it all in favor to make a great film and continue the story of this wonderful saga as it should. The shadow of Prometheus was very long, and it seems that the director could not catch the helm of the ship.
Nostromo and Ripley become bigger, they are already legend ... And the fact is that Elizabeth Shaw was the perfect candidate to occupy that emptiness. He missed her a lot. With his lack, the film loses the course.
Then the subject of David, which must have disappeared and instead is augmented in an incomprehensibly awkward way, giving more importance even than the own alien. Bad bad

OnRidley Scott has done a great job in directing his latest film, which I consider to be a perfect combination of action and horror. The cast of actors is outstanding, especially Michael Fassbender, who develops his role in a masterly way. On the other hand, the appearance of the aliens, their structure and evolution are perfect; You can see the work that was dedicated to them, because they were not completely created by computer so that they did not suffer a loss of realism. Likewise, Covenant also has its bad points: nobody can believe the naivete of the characters ( just in minutes they researched absolutely everything about the planet, and also they do not even take any preventive measures when they arrive). Some characters stand out because of their lack of depth, such as the case of Tenessee, which I consider a great character that unfortunately was wasted. Also, there are others that you will not care what the future holds for them, if they survived or not.
In summary, I found a great movie that manages to entertain (even if you are not a fan and have not seen the previous ones) with its incredible effects and talented actors. 100% recommendable.

However, this does not detract from a largely more suspenseful and dark film compared to its predecessor, Prometheus. Ridley Scott handles this film with enough precision that the stories and philosophical ideas (however convoluted they may be) are treated well in the context of the over-arching plot. Though the attempts, or rather the execution of these thought-provoking ideas into the film could've been done much better. With some worthwhile action and terrorizing aliens, the blockbuster aspect of the film is done very well. And though the plot does become slightly rushed towards the end and somewhat predictable, it is still a very solid movie and a film definitely worth watching. Expand

Ridley Scott seems like a nice gentleman as evidenced by recent interviews, however, it is sad to see when an artist does not acknowledge that perhaps they are past their prime and delegate needed responsibilities onto other artists. The Martian was a hit because of it's strong starting material. I believe that Ridley Scott has a vision with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but as an audience member I am not sure what that is. I do not think that Ridley Scott could eloquently and simply communicate what his message is with these films. It seems that he is exploring a mosaic that is connected within his head and psyche, but does not translate broadly if at all beyond the boundaries of his own experience.

I would tell Mr. Scott given the opportunity, these sentiments, in the hopes that he would reflect on how his films are being received. My wish would be that he would refine his vision so that further films are more impactful. Further thoughts:

The way they dispatched the aliens towards the end of the movie were well done.

What is Ridley Scott's obsession with hyper-violence? It makes me think that Hollywood displays a propensity towards sociopathology.

InExcept for the scenes featuring David & Walter, the film is a convoluted mess. The script is astonishingly stupid, with an obvious half-assed attempt by Scott to link up Prometheus & Alien franchises, attempting to make it work somehow. In addition to the pathetic scenario, the film is essentially just sets of events which are clearly made to set up the story & ideology of David/Walter. The crew is expendable, and killed off in painstakingly too easy manner. The creatures don't make sense in their behaviour. The entire film can essentially be written off.

This is the problem with this film. It doesn't know what the hell it is. Scott obviously wanted to continue with some philosophising as in Prometheus, but gave the audience lots of sci-fi action "Alien" stuff so that profits could be made, sold the film on that point. What we are ultimately left with, is a 2/10 in the action-horror department (the way the action scenes happen make no sense). Prometheus and previous Aliens films did much better in that regard. And in the "philosophising"/scenario department, we have a very weird storyline. I personally think Scott went off the deep end trying to link the Alien & Prometheus franchise in such a cheap way (everybody knows how, its not even a spoiler as its so obvious, starting with the biblical name "David").

The problem is that the Alien & Prometheus franchises were amazing for different reasons, and Scott destroyed what made the two good, by mixing them up in such a way. We have a film that is not as "space-discovery" as Prometheus, and a film that is not as "action-horror" done as well as Alien & Aliens. And to top it off, the scenario itself is nonsensical.

And what is disappointing is that unlike many others, I thought the cast was really great in terms of chemistry. The prologue dvelved on that a little, but nothing was ultimately explored. They were just people to be killed off. And not only that, they didnt even die in ways that were satisfying. They just died, easily, not how human beings should die (slowly and with difficulty, like in Alien films).

Ultimately its an enjoyable film on the surface, but when you really look at it, you see an incredibly weak film on all fronts. I'd place Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3 (assembly cut) higher than this film. Prometheus also.

I feel Scott started with a great base, which is: Great filming location, athmospheric location, colourful crew (different colors, different personalities, even a gay couple), new creatures...But then decided to make what is essentially a B-movie sci-fi flick. It feels extremely cheap throughout. Even the creatures themselves are terribly done CGI mess. To the point when they are hit by bullets, you get that cheap videogame blood effect, that looks astonishingly fake, and kills all suspension of disbelief.

I found myself laughing at the creatures more than fearing them. Because they obviously looked like cheap CGI, rather than the creatures that still scare the **** out of me from the Alien Franchise, and even Prometheus (the deacon at the end, the octopus alien thing, etc...were gruesome).

At least it's better than Alien Resurrection, Alien 3, and Prometheus. The story in Alien Covenant could have been better, and the characters could have been smarter. Thanks to Michael Fassbender's character, he saved the film by giving an excellent performance compared to the other guys. The action is good, and very suspenseful. We wanted some alien action in Prometheus which we didn't get. Alien Covenant will not disappoint if you're going in just to see the xenomorph fighting, but the story might disappoint some people especially the fans. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would have gave it **** if I didn't see the twist coming a mile away. Otherwise Alien: Covenant is the best since Alien and Aliens. I just felt like Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) got the Hicks and Newt Alien 3 treatment. David (Michael Fassbender) proves here that he's the key character of these movies. We don't root for people to survive though just for them to die off screen. Who says Scott won't do that again with the 3rd film.
I enjoyed most the movie but a lot of people die because they were stupid. When some creepy Android says "follow me, I want to show you something." You don't goespecially if that creepy Android is David. So I felt like their were some horror cliches. Especially with "the everything is fine...oh wait no it's not!" typical horror movie ending. I am not exactly defending why Alien: Covenant is one of the best though. The film is engaging and interesting during it's slow moments. I enjoyed learning more of why David does what he does.
I like that he actually says "curiosity killed the cat!" Since that's what I was thinking about him. His curiosity is very dangerous. The film does skip the whole "who created us ?" plot of Prometheus. However, David is the creator these films is interested in. It's about creation. Not ours though. The xenomorphs....
I find that intriguing and is why my Thumb is up.

My first Question why the Captain in the Sleep Box was burned up to hell.
And the next Point is you cant at the end decide who is actually Walter(The Androids) and who is David(The Androids).
And why do you take on Board 10 Years ago a deadly Virus with the Mission to make new a life and colorize a new Planet.
I dont have any conclusion

Which is not the case. The story needed to move further. We have yet another movie about a crew, sure to be almost completely wiped out by the end, that is heading straight into trouble. Problem is, we know that in advance. The element of surprise of the original Alien cannot be repeated nor recreated. Cameron's Aliens showed something new and succeeded. Even Alien 3 and Resurrection at least tried, partly succeeding partly not, to do that. Scott decided to take the franchise in a new direction with Prometheus: exploring the origins of the alien. That's fine, at least if you're not trying to retell over and over the same story. I thought the movie would be much more dynamic and articulated than it actually was. I thought and hoped that some of the questions would be explained. Not everything but enough for this movie to make sense as a chapter in a wider story arc. The Engineers, which were at the core of Prometheus' narrative, have literally disappeared. David is revealed to be the Alien's creator through some unspecified process presumably involving Shaw, and thus posing further questions about the franchise's direction and how A:C and (if there will be any) sequels will tie in with the original Alien. LV-426's juggernaut was carrying thousands of alien eggs. A fossilised Engineer was taking them somewhere long-ago (consistent with the antiquity of what was going on Prometheus's planet, maybe). Aliens offered us an explanation about the large number of eggs: a queen-like alien produced the eggs. The aliens where then supposed to be a spiecies which was exploited by yet another race for undisclosed purposes. Now we understand that David has created (or recreated) the alien and presumeably intends to perfect it further. Then how the story follows risks to be at worst entirely predictable and at best contradictory. The large number of eggs, according to the story as A:C has redefined it, could be explained with David managing to find another Engineer juggernaut, produce a queen, amass its eggs on the ship and then (maybe) carrying them back to Earth, only for its plan to be stopped in some way. The original Alien's Engineer pilot had been killed by an alien bursting out of his chest. What about the Engineers creating humans? What about them trying to destroy mankind? What about the virus and the Engineers' apparently complex rituals and way of life? Has it changed over time? Of course the creator of a series will take the story where he wants, but whatever the choice it must at any rate convincing narrated and must be consistent with the source materia. The choice of having David as the creator of the alien complicates things. Scott inaugurated Prometheus's new course. Rather than focusing on narrative mistakes, he seems to have focues on the story, creating twist after twist without explaining much. Throughout the series and throughout the movie as well the focus seems to be continuously shifting leaving us unable to understand nor appreciate the characters and the stories behind them. In the end, a movie has to be consistent on its own, even when it's part of a series. One cannot turn cinema into a one hundred million-episode tv series. Story and development have to be more coherent, even if the franchise is taken into new directions. No matter what's the origin of the Alien, which some will eventually find satisfactory, others will find disappointing. Just allow us to understand how everything plays out. Expand

Even worse than alien 3. A frightfully lame story with dull actors leaves the predecessor's film really well there. This film offered even more for the eye and had better actors. Let the alien row rest, finally, and breaks you not always more.

Acting was top notch especially from Fassbender, Waterson and McBride and there was some really nice shots and moments but I just thought the plot was uninspiring and the ending was predictable and cheap. It felt more like an alien movie which is a plus but I just feel like the execution should have been better as you can clearly see that this film struggles to find its identity throughout. Character motivations (especially David's) were unclear and offered little to no explanation to why things are happening the way they are. The crew of the Covenant and their shear stupidity are another thing that really did this film in for me as well as some holes in the plot regarding ship fail-safe and back up protocols. The sixth Alien movie doesn't disappoint. Alien: Covenant is loaded with the tense action sequences and visceral gross-out moments that we have learned to love from this franchise. The thoughtful, world-building storyline delivers new and interesting heights for the series. Alien: Covenant should have no trouble appealing to new audiences while also pleasing long-time fans. Its one fault is in taking a few minutes too long to get things going in the beginning. At the risk of sounding jaded: in 2017, we have seen the fancy spaceship effects and hyper-sleep stuff before. Skip it and the movie would have benefit, much like this years "Life" did. Overall, Alien: Covenant shouldn't be missed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A very conventional alien movie. The film explains briefly what happen to Shaw, the engineer planet but...they all feel like shortcuts explanations. The rest can be seen a mile away, the villain robot, the alien killing everyone on ground and in space. The FX are fine, the sound is not always good, the music is forgettable. The horror is just average and the level of stupidity of the crew is even more daunting (especially since the movie always try to say they have to protect the colonist, something they always fail to do). They speak of protocols but implement almost none of them. Which makes this film story a real joke that is unbelievable, even more then Prometheus. I give it 30%, because I loved the first 20 minutes without any aliens. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It gets a 2 for visuals, and most importantly, the phenomenal musical score, but beyond that, absolute garbage. There are so many things wrong with this movie on so many levels, from destroying and ret-conning the lore of the ALIEN series, to contradicting Prometheus, to blatantly trying to copy/paste ALIEN 1979 in the third act. Every single character in this movie is forgettable, with the exception of David, and the problem with him is he's Satan. I didn't come to watch a militant atheism flick. I came to watch an ALIEN movie, but the basic premise of this movie is, to sum it up, 'God created Satan but Satan's better, herpa-derp, despair!' Spoilers ahead...

Okay... so now David is the guy who created the ALIEN, not those badass engineers, and he did it cuz he didn't like being Weyland's **** and is butthurt about not being able to create life... Wow, isn't that cool? That doesn't totally ruin the franchise and mystery of the xenomorph or anything... Epic FAIL Ridley Scott! Someone please take the series away from him before it's too late.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watchable. Beginning of the movie is a little forced, plot-wise. I have no idea why Danny McBride was in this movie, his character didn't add much and was your cliche country/cowboy rouge type.

The origin story for the aliens is pretty weak IMO. I didn't care for the Android angle in this movie or Prometheus. "I'm an Android, I don't have feelings, I don't have to bother acting" is getting pretty tired, Hollywood.

The planet they visit, very little exploration of the planet. Just a couple establishing shots, no real exploration. Could have done a lot with this, but didn't.

I loved Prometheus, much more engaging. This movie is pretty empty.

Mad Max flashback! Jurassic Park velociraptor! I wasn't the only one in the theater laughing at the many ridiculous "climaxes" in this rickety ship. While the critters were pretty cool, R.Scott neglected to find the Hitchcockian tension that should be the bedrock of any Alien movie. Too many critters & too predictable. Not one gasp or jump out of your seat moment, sigh. I wanted a lot more creeping around corners, rustling grass before I laid eyes on the little abominations. It was way too easy to tell the good guys from the bad and too many similar characters with cookie cutter personalities. Can anyone give one memorable line of dialogue from two hours of blather? Perhaps most egregious was the dumbness of the crew upon landing on the new destination. Few precautions, poor planning, unable to handle emergencies. I really disliked the IMAX version, which was very “in your face” and distracting. (My reaction was similar to the many coming attractions of other “action” films I saw before the main film started. I have seen many other films in IMAX – for example, Doctor Strange – and liked them.) Perhaps Ridley Scott doesn’t “get” IMAX. Regardless, my reaction went from a charitable 5 rating to an enthusiastic 7, but the irritating characters (like Tennessee) and the Walter-David confusion didn’t help my enjoyment the second time. I understand intellectually that we needed characters who were so attracted to each other that they could spend the rest of their lives together as colonists, but the disgruntled misfits in the first Alien film were more fun than these lovey-doveys. But generally the latest film was interesting and, and as a fan who has seen the other films in the series innumerable times, I enjoyed it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's been a long time since a movie did so many things wrong, while still managing to take itself seriously. It looks nice for the most part, and mostly it's well shot and stuff.
But the characterization is almost nonexistent. One of the reasons Alien was good was that the characters were convincing so you could empathize with them, and that the dialog between those characters was well-written and sounded natural. At the end of Covenant I only knew the names of two human characters. Everyone else was just horror flesh. And even the two human characters I knew the names of were poorly defined. The only one who gets a profile is David the android. Not his alter ego Walter though. He only gets to react to David's genocidal stupidity. Where Alien targeted the dialog so that the characters were almost always talking TO SOMEONE, all the dialog in Covenant is directed at anyone nearby. They are all making speeches or commenting on Ridley Scott's sets. Not one line of natural dialog is spoken in the entire movie.
What minimal character development there is is so hamfisted and cliche that you wish they hadn't even bothered with it. One character is apparently religious, and he has just the clunkiest, most appallingly bad lines you can imagine. The movie tries very hard to convince you with this that religious people are extra bad, while genocide and mass murder of humans is good. Of course the other humans are also bad, but religious people are just really extra bad and need to die immediately.

And to make matters worse, the story is driven by some of the most astounding stupidity you'll ever see in a movie. If everyone is not a complete moron, the movie doesn't happen. First the religious captain decides to reroute his colony ship mid-mission so that everyone will be killed by aliens. Then they decide to land immediately when they arrive, to make sure that everyone will be killed by aliens. Once they land they all decide to go camping without any protective gear on so that everyone will get killed by aliens. Then they breathe in alien mushroom spores so that everyone will be killed by aliens. It's like they are stupid little children wandering aimlessly around touching everything they see. The movie should be called Boring, Faceless, Moron Children in Space. This is not a proper movie script. This is expositional oohs and aahs from the morons, interrupted by expositional Hitler speeches from the Blade Runners, uhm, I mean androids. They even do flashbacks, which is Hollywood speak for "I don't have any respect for my audience anymore at all".

And the worst part isn't really that it is terrible. We've survived terrible Alien movies before. But it is that it spits on the existing, good movies. Even Prometheus, which was awful as well in my view, gets spat on. They dump the entire origin story they were cooking up in that movie, as well as destroying any mystery about the alien itself, which is btw a complete side character in this franchise now. And the old movies now make no sense, because Covenant messes up the timeline.
The original from 1979 had an engineer fossil in the ship the crew found. And that fossil had alien eggs in its baggage compartment. It takes thousands of years for something to properly fossilize, so clearly the original is implying that the eggs have somehow been dormant for thousands of years along with the fossilized captain.
But now it is revealed in Covennant that the Blade Runner made the eggs just a few years before the setting of the original Alien. So why were the eggs in the ship from the original now, if the engineer had nothing to do with them?
Do the alien eggs Blade Runner created need to be hatched in the proximity of engineer fossils? Did he make a fake engineer fossil in the derelict ship before laying his eggs next to it? And if so, why? Did he invent a time machine, go back in time and kill off all the engineers just so they would have the time to properly fossilize for Ripley and her friends to find, before returning to the present to lay his eggs next to it? And what would be the point of that anyway? And if he did kill the engineers in the distant past, how could he have killed them again with his grey goo lawn sprinkler in the idiotic Covenant flashback?

Just this one scene in Alien now makes absolutely no sense because of Covenant. And since Alien is a vastly superior movie, I will pretend Covenant is wrong and yet another non-Alien movie for me to ignore. It is a poorly written, idiotic romanticization of genocide and transhumanism, rife with anti-human anti-religious messages. And personally I am so tired of this being the only message Hollywood has left. Why does the movie need this crude propaganda anyway? Oh that's right, it's because it doesn't have a script and is desperate for something, anything, that will make it seem intelligent instead of a giant waste of time. It looks OK and is well shot. But it fails spectacularly at both horror and sci fi.

I love the Alien franchise, but this movie is hot, pubertal garbage. It messed with the whole Alien mythology. Has the most boring and dumb characters and is overall pretty boring. The only bright spot is Fassbender.

Ridley Scott deja su huella otra vez, tanto bien para unos muy mal para otros y otros tanto se les hace exclente. Covenant será una película en la que se hablará por mucho tiempo tanto positiva y negativamente; en lo personal la mía es positivo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was totes excellent. I could have just watched the movie for 2 hours straight with the camera gliding over the spacecraft's interior the set designs were so well done. The scene with David landing on the Alien planet was nothing short of amazing.
The movie does prove that even in an advanced technological future, humans will continue to be incredibly stupid in their decision making.
Sorry captain that hypersleep nightmare was 100 percent your fault.

The film is not without flaws with a few plot holes, some occasional stale acting performances but this doesn't take too much away from the experience which had me locked in and engaged from the opening title to the ending credits. Fassbender is in top form, The film is highly-ambitious as it successfully blends the philosophical leanings of its predecessor Prometheus and its more action/horror oriented suspense and gore of its sequels Alien/Aliens. Highly-Recommended to those that enjoy there Sci-fi action flicks with a emphasis on existential reflection & psychological thrilling elements though admittedly maybe too cerebral for some. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Expand

Bad Alien movie. Would not watch again. It misses all of the things that made Alien a good movie and the effects where lacking with the Aliens back spikes clipping like a video game, and some scenes just look really fake and dumb. You can tell this movie was rushed and was more of a squeal to Prometheus than the Alien movies. I should of learned from Alien 3 that they'll never made a good Alien movie again and I'm right.
