While it's a pretty cheap and lazy attempt at an Alien sequel with paperthin characters, laughable and sometimes annoying character choices and not so great effects, I enjoyed it more than Prometheus, because it wasn't really trying to be more than it was. Prometheus is still a superior movie, but Alien: Covenant is more entertaining in my opinion. It's like the schlocky horror films of the 80s, like the Friday the 13th movies, which I honestly really love, in a guilty pleasure kind of way. All the stuff with Fassbender was pretty great, the characters he plays were the best part of the film on a critical level. Though I would have liked it to be more of a Prometheus sequel rather than an Alien prequel ("remake"), it's still a really enjoyable film, if you don't take it seriously. Honestly I wish Ridley Scott would stop making these Alien films, but I have to admit I am kind of looking forward to the next film. Expand

- There are some thrilling and intense moments in the movie
- Michael Fassbender

Cons:
- Lots of flaws
- Stupid characters, which makes you wonder how they got picked as the ship's crews in the first place

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you liked Prometheus, you'll like this movie. It has much the same tone, pacing, writing, and visuals. The acting is just as good too. This movie also disappointed me for the same reason. Nonsense. In Prometheus, they make a big deal about mapping out an alien spaceship before they enter it near the beginning of the movie. Then they proceed to get lost without an explanation why. Lost? This ruined the rest of the movie for me. After this, I was just looking for more screw ups. I saw one. Near the end of the movie, the heroine rushes into the cockpit of her spacecraft to tell the pilot to smash their ship into an alien spacecraft that is taking off, because "If it makes it to earth, there will be no earth to go back to." The pilot does this without question, comment, like it was nothing. What? There were probably others, but its been awhile since I've seen it. I was so hyped for that movie.
With Covenant, I kept my anticipation in check. I still ran into the same nonsense. You bee-bop onto a planet that can support humans, that you've never surveyed before, without helmets, and have two of you crew get "infected". In the ensuing panic, one of the movies characters mention "quarantining" the infected crew. The crew had a way of dealing with someone getting infected, but did nothing to try to prevent it. Wow. The movie even rehashes situations from the first Alien movie, ah-la, "The Force Awakens". Even so, the movie does end up being more watchable than Prometheus.

The actual feature lives up to the lack of hype. If you are a fan of the original and first sequel (both classics, 10 and 8 ratings respectively here) or the series in general, this should be disappointing for its lack of originality and its through the paces predictability. If you haven't seen those or are just not a fan, this thing has got to be an excruciating semi-incoherent bore! That said, it is well made as all Ridley Scott films are. It does deliver on the very expected jolts, scares, and gruesome violence. Yeah and it's boring.
Which brings up the larger question: Is Hollywood's incessant continuing occupation with sequels, prequels and reboots simply a supreme lack of creativity and fear of originality in going for the safe bet box office dollars? Or are the movies truly dying as an original medium, having succumbed to formula and having basically told all the stories there are to tell; with all these essentially remakes a logical updating of styles and techniques to old stories/movies for today's youth who go for it because it's all new to them? That has been the case with movies for generations. And maybe every generation grows tired of movies after decades of viewing? Maybe it has finally come to a saturation point, at least until the next great barrier breaker. The "Blade Runner" sequel trailer before this feature is intriguing and has a compelling want to see freshness to it despite being yet another sequel. Why Ridley Scott directed another Alien (since he already made a decent prequel to the series with "Prometheus") over that sequel is a wonder.

"Alien: Covenant" falls within the latter two. It's not as mind-blowing as the original, not as much of a rocket ride as "Aliens," but it's no "Alien 3" or "Prometheus." Anyone who has seen any of the previous movies will be entertained but not awed, as there's really nothing new here. Anyone who actually appreciated "Prometheus" will see this as a fairly seamless transition to a faster-paced sequel. For me, this was like going on your favorite amusement park ride for the 100th time. You might still enjoy it, but it doesn't have that same joy or jolt of excitement you felt the first time you sat in the chair and buckled yourself in. The story line is almost a rewrite of the original "Alien," down to the "Let's try to kill the monster this way" ending. The characters are cookie-cutter; you have a Sigourney Weaver clone (the human Sigourney from "Alien," not the superhero of the later flicks), a number of other likeable but gone-too-soon folks, the unexpected stranger, etc. My biggest negative is with the movie's predictability. I figured out the "twist" about 40 minutes in, and hoped I would be wrong. No such luck.

A person sitting near me complained that the movie should have focused more on the race introduced in "Prometheus." That's probably where the next movie (and you know they'll figure out how to do another one) is headed.

Overall, I give this movie a B for entertainment value, a C for storyline, and a C+ for execution. It's not worth a full-priced admission, but it's good as a bonus picture with a Dish Network, DirecTV, Amazon or Netflix account. It's not a wasted day, but it's not one worth being at the top of your To Do list.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a long time fan of Alien, the movie was a major letdown in many ways. As an action movie, it was decent. My problems with the movie:

1. Dumbest people in history! No protocols no quarantine followed ZERO commons sense!
2. Skipped major parts of the time from Prometheus to Alien and left too many things unanswered.
3. Ruined the saga of the engineers creating the xenomorph and replaced it with psychopath robot create the monsters. Really? Are you **** kidding me?
4. Crappy plot and character development.
5. Plot holes galore
6. No tension you knew what would happen next

Now, if you suspend disbelief and just watch as action the movie is not as bad. As an Alien movie, it is the worst in series as bad as Alien Resurrection. PLEASE Ridley retire and QUIT making movies!

The biggest problem (once again) is stupid characters that continue making one terrible decision after another and have zero depth. The plot and the characters are only there to make certain "expected" alien scenes happen (chestbursters, facehuggers, fighting a xenomorph with whatever you can, etc) rather than tell an interesting story with realistic characters.

Even the fights between the characters and the aliens are lackluster, especially in the third act which attempts to copy the ending of Aliens. And while there’s plenty of gore, the film is severely lacking in the horror we come to expect from Alien movies.

We also don't get many answers about the Engineers or other major lore, and the direction taken with the characters of Dr. Shaw and David leave much to be desired.
Finally, the film tries to be “deep” with poetic quotes and philosophical discussions between David and other characters, but this depth is not matched by any themes or ideas actually portrayed in the film.

The movie plays to all of the "Alien" series' strengths: believable characters and camaraderie, unbearably tense situations, gross-out horror, and stunning outer space vistas. In addition to being technically impeccable, I appreciated the fact that "Covenant" is a horror movie for adults. Not only does it refuse to water down its violence, it allows the characters to have intelligent discussions without explaining everything they're saying. In our current era of bloodless PG-13 horror and endless exposition for idiots, it was a breath of fresh air. Expand

Disclaimer: I'm a long-time Alien series fan. It's my #1 favourite movie series to date. Yes, including Alien 3 & Resurrection. Does NOT include Alien Vs Predator!

Alien: Covenant does not disappoint. It ties into Prometheus very well and then is peppered with 1979's Alien to bring in some scares and action. The ideas introduced in Prometheus are expounded upon in Covenant through David/Walter. One now needs to ask is "Alien" the creature or really the humanesque AI being developed by Weyland? Ridley Scott shot a beautifully filmed sci-fi epic that kept me enthralled from minute 1 to the end. The only thing lacking now, with Prometheus & Covenant, is there is no character that grabs the audience like Sigourney Weaver's Ripley did back in the Alien franchise heyday. Nonetheless, Covenant deserves to be seen on the big screen and ignore the negative reviews on IMDB (and here) by the wannabe salty critics. Looking forward to the next chapter which Scott said he'd be starting to film in 14 months time.

Depicting a manned mission to space to find where we came from, the film marked Scott's return to the Alien franchise and was a wildly imaginative and gorgeously designed science fiction film. It unlocked secrets in a magical world of mystery, all while delivering the roots of the xenomorphs that have come to define the franchise. However, its dumb character actions have led many to write it off as trash. Obviously, I disagree, but the complaint is fair. Alien: Covenant marks yet another divisive return to the beloved franchise for Scott and it certainly could wind up being remembered as even more divisive than its predecessor. Recently, Scott has had a nasty issue of not answering questions. Prometheus, as the beginning of a new prequel trilogy, is obviously loaded with open questions. Now, Covenant is planned to be the final sequential film in the trilogy and, yet, it leaves open questions in the name of having its prequel (and Prometheus' sequel) answer those questions. While this film works for the most part, Ridley Scott really needs to not do this. For its faults, Rogue One got this perfectly with a prequel that answered questions from the original and then just led right up to its beginning. Compared to that one, Covenant is certainly not nearly as fulfilling. This, and Prometheus, are intended to be prequels to the originals, but seem wholly different and not related at all, even if they feature the same beasts. There is a disconnect and, as a result, they are best enjoyed as a new science fiction franchise inspired by Alien.

In saying that, it is certainly heavily inspired by Alien. Ridley Scott seems to have abandoned all of the compelling ideas of Prometheus in favor of a greatest hits album from Alien and Alien. With the crew of Covenant armed to the teeth and frequently engaging in shootouts with the xenomorphs, the film constantly calls back to the action roots of James Cameron's brilliant sequel. Meanwhile, Scott tosses in about fifty chest-bursters and face-huggers for lovers of Alien, as well as smart guys touching those weird egg testicle things only to get killed. While the film is undeniably terrifying in its own right, Covenant never really feels like it is treading new ground. Prometheus, for all of its faults, was far more imaginative with its mythology. Covenant, in ditching that and going for the visceral and gory fear of the original, has practically nothing to say. Should Scott follow through on Alien: Awakening, it promises to be far more compelling, as long as it can blend the fear from Covenant with the ideas of Prometheus.

That is not to say that Scott abandoned everything from Prometheus, of course. He insisted on keeping the plot holes and vague references to the past that raise questions that, theoretically, will be answered later in the prequel to this film, Awakening. Unfortunately, as the second film and third entry into this film, it is about time we get answers and not more questions. The most egregious example here would be the scene of David unleashing the virus on the Prometheus muscly white dudes. There are two problems with this scene, mostly because it is a flashback. For one, the film is set ten years after Prometheus. In that film, these white dudes are mostly gone. Now, before ten years, it is bursting with life. This is absolutely impossible, so the timeline makes no sense. So, then the next jump is that he arrived beforehand, which is also impossible. As a result, it is a sequence that looks cool, but actually makes no sense whatsoever with what we already know. This misstep hints at how detrimentally underwritten Covenant is and how it seems to even ignore its own timeline.

As with any modern blockbuster, one of the key elements of Covenant is obviously its sense of spectacle. With wondrous special effects in Prometheus, one could only hope for the same with this film. Featuring gorgeous ship design - especially the embryo holders, which are a nice touch - and absolutely spectacular special effects in the sequence where the xenomorph gets kicked off of the ship, Covenant is undeniably a visual feast. However, it even has faults here. There is a sequence on the cargo hold where Daniels (Katherine Waterston) fights a xenomorph as Tennessee (Danny McBride) flies the cargo hold and, unfortunately, the effects are dreadful. It is clearly done in front of a green screen with no blending done to make its effects look natural. As a result, it is a scene that sticks out as a sour thumb and never looks natural in the least. It is a scene that has a strong sense of design and is a nice shootout, but it just never works visually as its poor effects completely takes the audience out of the film.

Obviously, the studio spent an enormous amount of money bribing critics and "posters" to sing the praises of this seriously flawed film.

Aliens: Covenant starts off well: creepy, slow and suspenseful until the first violent death (a riff on the pacing of the first "Alien"), but from there the film simply collapses upon itself. There are real problems here: a script that makes no sense, numerous characters making senseless idiotic decisions, and hatchling Aliens that transition from real time models (effective) to CGI cartoons (intensely ineffective and fake looking....), in the blink of an eye.....

Most disappointing is how two major character themes in Prometheus are handled here: The Engineers (who bizarrely seem miniaturized in stature and menace in Covenant than they did in Prometheus) and Dr Elizabeth Shaw, played with passion by Noomi Rapace. Both are simply dropped or aborted with little explanation or fanfare. Rapace is sincerely missed here. Prometheus was a visually stunning poorly written film, but the character of Dr. Shaw, (obsessed with the origins of life but barren), had enormous potential. The android, David, played by Fassbender, is the star of the show and totally pointless. Nothing that this character robot does makes sense. Nothing. I suppose some Alien nerd could concoct some storyline to explain the actions of this renegade android, but any narrative could be weakened by a counter point, because ultimately, the SCRIPT MAKES NO SENSE, and neither do the characters. The acting? Its fine. It isn't great because the script doesn't allow for character development. Everyone keeps lauding Waterson, McBride, and Fassbender, but the greatest acting in the film is early on, in the first hatchling sequence, by a young actress locked inside a medical bay facing certain death. Its the best scene in the film by far, the best acting, the truest most instinctual scare. The rest of the film spirals down a path of pontification, origin myth busting, and senseless fatalistic choices with equally predictable consequences.....

The ending? Laughable, silly, dumb. The look on Waterson's face, dimwitted, says it all with unintentional irony....

This series should end. This is the fourth Alien film in a row on a sliding scale.

Time to move on.

Alien covenant was dissapointing, I really didn't enjoy it, I'm a big fan of the first two alien movies, thought that the third one was meh and the other ones weren't good at all, they just lost the charm of the first two films.

The story wasn't good at all, the lore of the alien movies just atren't interesting to me anymore, it's starting to become dull and pretentious, the story itself is about people making stupid decisions and they all pay the consequences.
Oh yeah, that twist at the end was so predictable, like it was suppose to be like the big reveal of the movie but everybody who watched it with me knew the twist before the end, so yeah I really didn't like the story.

The characters were dumb, they were so stupid, the whole story of the movie happend because of one of the main character's decision, I didn't care for anyone because every character was either bland, forgettable or just plain stupid, the decisions some characters made just frustrated me, so I wasn't a fan of these characters.

There are some highlights, the special effects are amazing, michael fassbender does a great job, it's really gory and some of the alien scenes are entertaining, it's just a shame that they weren't able to create an entertaining story and characters to get invested to.

So I can't recommend this film, if you are a fan of promotheus or you are just here for alien action, you might enjoy it, but if you are tired of this franchise like myself, this film won't help you.

TheIf you enjoy the tone and feeling of Aliens movies, you will like this movie. If you have issue with what the plot..should or should not be...that is a separate issue and I am fine with the direction Ridley has taken his creation in. The film is in some ways very much like other aliens films in terms of characters getting picked off 1 by 1 etc., but the tone and feeling is just like any other aliens film, and entertains as such, mixed in with a good enough amount of story to keep you wondering. This is a movie, made by writers....they do not have the answers to the universe...no idea what some people are expecting out of an aliens movie. It entertains and also presents some questions, and balances that tension throughout. I would say it was about as good as Prometheus, not as good as the two originals, and overall another solid sequel/prequel. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While Prometheus was there to leave a viewer confused and somewhat annoyed at a story that attempts to set the stage, Covenant beats the viewer over the head with predictability and characters that are just begging to die - either because they're married and really want you to know it, or because they keep droning on about their faith or their dreams in a manner that in no way adds to the already thin narrative. Additionally, with the characters crafted in such a shoddy way, the viewer is left counting down the minutes until the alien shows up and eats the members of the crew. And this is what is going to happen. Viewers know this going in. But with the overly tidy and predictable package that is Michael Fassbender's character(s) and the lack of depth in any character other than Tennessee (who is seemingly only interesting because it's Danny McBride in a somewhat serious role), the movie appears to care less about the audience and more about getting on to the next film in the series. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After watching the making of Prometheus (Prometheus-The Furious Gods) I came away with the distinct feeling that when Ridley Scott decided to make Prometheus he didn't have a clear idea about where the story would go, and so it was shot in a very organic 'we'll see where this leads us' type of way, which I believe is why in the end there is so much about the themes raised in the story that remain unanswered.
That film was however, despite some its more obvious plot failings, an interesting thought provoking exercise that many of us believed would provide a fertile basis from which to further explore the riddle of the Engineers and the black goo. Alien covenant disappoints because it fails in so many ways to explore and address any of the interesting themes raised in its prequel. We learn nothing about the engineers and their role in the creation of humankind, or why they created the back goo to rid themselves of us in the first place. We learn nothing more about Shaw after she escapes certain death at the hands of the alien, other than that she meets a lonely, tragic, violent and ultimately senseless death at the hands of David. Where I felt the most let down was the idea that after all the speculation regarding the motivations of the Engineers and why they created us and then supposedly tried to destroy us, in the end, David was the mad scientist responsible for creating and unleashing the alien hybrid on humankind. How cute, how trite, how utterly banal. The reasons given to explain his conversion from thoughtful caring companion to cold vicious, sadistic, callous, genocidal killer are not just unconvincing but down right bizarre. In the end despite his vaunted freedom and creativity he like his creators, flawed, and no better than they. His one achievement the xenomorph is not truly an act of creation but the derivative work of a tinkerer. Shades of Deux ex machina! Was this really the best Ridley Scott and his writers could come up with? If none of that matters to you and all you want is a few thrills and chills, then Aliens Covenant won't disappoint. It's chock full of predictable scenarios, with forgettable characters routinely making illogical and incomprehensible decisions all in the service of advancing an extremely thin plot. In no way is this effort the equal of its predecessors. If
anything it is a step back a missed opportunity. This could have been a defining moment in the Aliens mythos. As it stands now it nothing more than another pedestrian numeral in a series that will soon fade away into obscurity.

Nothing fresh.
The crew *never* feels like *crew*.
You never care more than (very) superficially about any of the characters.
Idiotic plot-movers.
The weapons (supposedly 2104) were obviously 21st Century.
Pathetically shallow regurgitated story.
Pitiful creature design (aside from the last seen alien on the colony ship).
Asinine Friday the 13th moment on the colony ship toward the end.
The end made me feel my time was completely wasted.

After the execrable “Prometheus” and now this muck I'll never pay to see another Ridley Scott film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I met an Alien from an antique masterpiece
Who said: One vast and trunkless marble-skinned moron
Sleeps on a planet. On that planet, and another now
Utterly sunk, a shattered mythology lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of baffled contempt,
Tell that its director once well those passions read
Which no longer survive, stamped on these lifeless films,
The Prometheus that mocked us and the Covenant that rubbed it in:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ridley, king of Scotts,
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the ruin
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Five years ago, no one anticipated Prometheus as eagerly as I did. Once it came out, no one was more disappointed - I tried hard to like it, but could not - it sucked balls. I thought it could not get any worse. Oh how wrong I was. Prometheus sucked, but at least it TRIED, even if the result was an epic fail. It had some neat eye candy too. Covenant is way worse, which I thought was mathematically impossible. This movie feels like watching a TV rerun of AvP: Requiem with the commercials replaced by all the worst scenes of George Lucas' Star Wars prequels. Well, I guess one can say that Ridley has now finally surpassed Lucas - unfortunately, in the very worst sense of those words. When David says that in the end he pitied Weyland, he may as well have been referring to Ridley and his painfully inept tinkering with the great mythology he had once created. Just how ludicrous this has become is well-illustrated by the fact that the Xenomorph was, as we now learn, created by a tropey mad scientist/serial killer/Weylandstein Monster in a lair that looks like a superimposed combo of Buffalo Bill's and Hannibal Lecter's lairs from "Silence of the Lambs", all situated in what appears to be a Tunisian troglodyte boutique hotel itself situated smack in the middle of Pompeii. I mean, W the royal F?? I would put it to Ridley's old age, but between Prometheus and this he made "The Martian". And The Martian was actually pretty damn good. So there goes that excuse. Ridley, I love your work, had you only made Alien, or Blade Runner, or The Duellists, or Black Rain, and never made another good movie (which you did and still do, as proven by The Martian), you'd still be a movie genius. So. Please. Stop. Embarrassing. Yourself. By. Force-feeding. Us. Any. More. Of. This. Crap. Please!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Decent Stand-alone. Lackluster origin story for the galaxy's most feared species.

This movie has tense moments and pretty good pacing. The cast is not nearly as memorable as the original two, and the lead is certainly not Ripply, but the movie delivers on some solid, if not frequently visited ideas of what makes life sacred and worthy to live. The big short coming of this movie though is that it's connected to the Alien universe, and employs some very poor, cliche plot gimmicks to push forward the beginning of the infamous Xenos.

Vague spoiler:

The origin of the Aliens, according to this movie, is not awe inspiring or even horrifying. It's a petty pursuit and, evidently, could be achieved within the span of 10 years. Who knew?

Also in order to get them to propagate, you only need one single person to completely ignore all logical human responses or even the illogical ones that stem from basic survival instincts of panic and fear of the unknown and get that person to do dumb things over and over again until you have your master species.

This movie is a well directed movie, which saves it from being outright bad. Good job Mr. Ridley Scott, but this was still some really poor story telling and writing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The sequel to Prometheus opens with a flashback when Weyland succeeded
created a replicant named David. This David that accompanied Weyland to
search the greatest mystery of human kind. At the end of the Prometheus
Elizabeth Shaw is the only survivor along with David that she saved.
many years later, a colony spaceship - Covenant - sent to search an
alternative planet for human kind - along with a replicant crew named
Walter but then an accident caused life casualties include Cap.Jacob
Branson (James Franco) and some colony. The leadership falls to Oram
(Billy Crudup) to lead them all to the paradise planet without give any
chance for the crew to mourn and shows no empathy for Daniels (the
widow). When they catch signal from a hidden planet, Oram decided to
change course - with the official objection from Daniels as the second
highest officer. And so they landed, but still Daniels still feel
uncomfortable for this green planet hide something mysterious. So, Oram
brings his exploration team along to explore and to find the source of
the signal monitored by Upworth,Ricks & Tennesse from the outer.
So,then two of the member secretly infected by pathogen and less then
half hour, they real nightmare begins. In the middle of chaos, David
the revealed to safe them...are they really save? I was a fan of Alien
movies (Only Alien 1979 and Aliens 1986 - the rest Alien?Trash!!!).
Ridley brings out this Alien dark sci fi saga alive back from the very
beginning starts with Prometheus where at the end of the movie there
are only 1 human survivor, Dr.Shaw and she saved David too. In this
sequel to Prometheus, the screenplay put more emotion between main
characters and more of scary horrifying form of aliens such as deadly
pathogen that can turn DNA of the host in less then 1 hour and breeds
new life form from inside it's host body. I really love this new kind
of horrifying alien form, and how Alien:Covenant build the characters
that supposed to be very competent but then easily torn aparts and
treacherous. And Ridley successfully drag audience to follow all the
way to finally acquainted with the alien that the first time Ridley
brought to screen in 1979 (xenomorph) that David called so as the
perfect creation. But, somehow i think that the parasite pathogen that
scattered everywhere in that green horror planet is more scary and more
efficient to breed vicious alien,. And by the way why the rest of the
crews not showing any surprise that they just saved by a person that
looks exactly as Walter? And there is not even conversation between
them and David where he's came from...the connection between him and
the spaceship. But i impressed the landscape shot on the green
mysterious planet..and how perfectly Daniels express her wonder that
they hear not a sound of birds or animal. If this planet has everything
that all living creatures on earth need to start a new beginning...if
this planet is a paradise..why they see nothing but just a sound of
waterfall from afar. What i actually feel about this sequel is that
Ridley bring this Alien saga into a new whole dimension of sci fi
horror...that still left questions unanswered...even since the
Prometheus..why? the big giant bald pale skin hated human?that is a big
question that still running around in my head. And Fasbender
successfully performed as 2 replicant characters at the same time the
sympathetic Walter and the psychopath genius David (psychopath? David
is a robot for haven sake...no words can describe this). Finally, this... Ridley really escalate his Alien saga not just into a deeper and darker alien movie but a step closer bringing Alien as a new legend in the film making history.

Ridley Scott has been called a visionary director for some of his early work („Alien“, „Blade Runner“). Later, he has been known as the man able always able to put together some big-ass epic.
But I would argue that Scott's projects are not really famous for excellent screenplays, or actually becoming bona fide megahits.
Only four times during his whole directing career spanning 50+ years has he given birth to a movie pulling some serious profit from cinemas: „Gladiator“, „Hannibal“, „The Martian“ and „Prometheus“.
(Okay, the original „Alien“ was super profitable too, but only because it had a small budget.)
That may explain why the grand old man is still interested in making „Alien“ movies, although he turned 79 last November and is certainly aware that he’s not gonna be around for much longer.
Yes, "Prometheus" and "Covenant" have been his attempts to expand on one of his most widely known and loved works, only with much bigger budget and computer power available today. Who couldn't dig that?
Somehow, returning to his legacy piece after all these years, he is still not interested in giving new „Alien“ a proper story worthy of 21st century. Not in „Prometheus“, not in „Covenant“.
There are flashes of potential such as adding android characters and a female hero resembling Ripley. but storywise, changes are cosmetical and don’t go near anywhere like trying to develop something with any real dramatic weight.
It’s still all about seemingly unstoppable extraterrestrial on a killing spree. Now with prettier pictures and more awesome explosions than in 1979.
There’s really not much more to talk about. It’s an eighth „Alien“ movie – sixth, if you want to exclude two „AVP“ spin-offs. Action scenes are good, everything else is sadly disposable. It's not a fail but it's essential only for the biggest genre fans.

Ridley scott and the writers are really trying to extend the Alien univers by taking it at its root. We have here a movie that explore the meaning of being god. Having the right of life and death upon the others. Having such a character as David was pretty unexpected but it feels so obvious now. I'v seen it twice in theater so I was able to really get a bit more objectif about it. The acting is good, nothing pull you out of the story at any moment. The score does perfeclty the job of taking the old songs of jerry goldsmith and reniew it. The general atmosphere of this movie is great. For what's might feel wrong I'd say the visual effect aren't always look the best. They tried to make the alien faster and ferocious by moving at an inhuman speed. The result might make us feel like it's a very ferocious creature but not very believable as we could see in the first Alien movie. It's definitely feel like cg as it is most of the time on screen ( except during the first neomorph attack). I would give it a 7/10 if not so many people would have rated it poorly for wrong reasons. I loved prometheus. however, definitely not my impression for Alien conevnant. I found the plot way to predictable and to simple. the 3 aliens were killed so rapidly... I don't know, maybe my expectations were set to high after prometheus. No really, If it wasn't for the marvelous rendering shots of space, the spaceship, landscapes, (etc.), I would've left the theater before the movie ends. Expand

Some secrets have to remain secret. A stranger was many years in the aura of mystery, and we thought "how the hell did they come from?" — it's interesting. But Ridley Scott decided to make a series of prequels, and why not. To disclose the Foreign origin must be the one who this whole mess started. The problem is that Ridley Scott, the director, and the prequels need a great script, but it is not. "Prometheus" was a pretty fantastic movie and had almost no connection with the movie "Alien" and "Alien:Covenant" is its continuation. However, almost no connection with "Prometheus" has, except of the Android David, we don't even show the monster from the end of "Prometheus". But "Alien: Covenant" is already directly linked to the movie "Alien" and reveals to us the mystery of the origin of these deadly monsters. The problem with this film, like "Prometheus" script. He is absolutely useless. If the reason why the colonists landed on an uncharted planet can understand (though it is close and the atmosphere is right), but the fact that they landed on this planet without space suits can not be forgiven. If the colonists were to them, the film simply would not have been, nobody would have been infected, and all was well (before I met David, of course). The colonists not just dumb, they have intelligence left in a minus, besides, they cannot be called professionals in their field. The colonists very much, you are one of them remember, except for the main character and that guy in the hat, but names you don't remember, remember only their images. The characters are many and they are not disclosed. Fortunately, they die quickly, and almost all do it's pretty cool. The only interesting and compelling characters is the Android David and Walter, who brilliantly played by Michael Fassbender. David is wonderful, he is cunning, treacherous, and otherwise mocking stupid people. He is the best antagonist in the universe "Alien". The film looks great! All kinds are absolutely gorgeous. Ridley Scott is a true master of his craft, for the Director's work can not complain about, everything looks nice and cool. Scenes of fights, staging, scenery — everything is fine. The monsters look scary, and very dangerous. The film breaks into silly scenes (like the landing of the colonists without a spacesuit), and stunning (as the appearance Nepomorpha from the back). The Director pulls this film, because the script is stupid, the characters often do not behave logically, you don't can understand things not because of their stupidity, but because of the scenario of stocks. Although it is possible that "Alien: COVENANT" as "Prometheus" was mercilessly cut, so you need to wait for the uncut version. People are stupid in this film, Yes, but they behave like people. No need to find fault with their behavior in a stressful situation, they are clearly not ready for this was. The human factor makes itself known, and you already see on the screen are not actors, but real people, because they live and behave as people. The film is full of biblical references, there are references to "Hamlet", is the talk about Wagner and others, and I think this is unnecessary in this film. Movies "Alien" should be about survival, about the unknown monsters, but we got a movie about Android and his menagerie. Fear almost no sense that the heroes survive too. The film is just stuck in all sorts of references and almost tried to scare the viewer. This film is about David, not about other people and other monsters, the story of Android, imagines himself a God. Don't get me wrong, it's good, even great, but not for a movie about aliens. I have the feeling that Ridley Scott is sometimes confused scenario of this film and "Blade Runner". References to "Hamlet", the Bible is good, but we didn't go to this movie. Although the monsters are encouraging. They are deadly, smart, and now we know their origin. "Alien:Covenant" is already associated with the movie "Alien", it's beautiful, entertaining, sometimes trying to scare. It is not just a beautiful fantasy film like "Prometheus", it's about our favorite Xenomorph. But it spoils a scenario in which a feeling that just with white thread tied these poor Alien. The film is not great, but not terrible, he is just average. I left the cinema without emotion. The film didn't scare me, not pleased, but not upset, he brings a lot of new information to the history of Others, besides he filmed great, the monsters look cool. A better film "Prometheus", and perhaps the best movie about aliens from the time of the third part. Looking forward to the next movie, but for a miracle do not hope. Expand

Let me start off by saying I liked both Prometheus and the first two films in the Alien series. I thought Ridley Scott to take what worked in each of those films to create a perfect blend of new and old concepts.

Scott is known for his gorgeously shot movies that sometimes lack the content to back up the rest of the film. I did not think this was the case for Alien Covenant and felt it was one of his more complete films. The movie did have some familiar horror movie tropes but for the most part nothing felt forced. The highlight for me was the performance by Michael Fassbender. The movie contained some of the best scenes I have by him as he had the perfect opportunities to show his range. One of the best Sci Fi Horror movies I have seen in a while, I recommend to all fans of genre or Prometheus and the original Alien movies.

In fact, Prometheus is my 2nd favorite movie in the whole franchise after the original Alien (admittedly I've never seen Alien vs. Predator but I know I am not missing much). I was excited by the more inquisitive nature of the movie and wanted to see where the storyline would take us in the follow-up. Unfortunately, Alien: Convenant is a bit confused about what kind of movie it is. While still enjoyable, it tries with mixed success to thread the needle between following the new storyline within a more expansive universe and the more predictable plot of the past alien movies. Although I do like the AI is here to kill us angle, I am not fully sold on the David character and how the movie played out. I will reserve final judgement about the storyline until the next film. This must be said, however; Michael Fassbender, hats off to you sir. Still interested enough to see what happens next. Expand

I was so hopeful that this movie would bring the franchise back, but it doesn't. The complaints that it was too predictable are on point, but my main problems with this film are that it makes the (already confused) cannon and muddles it even more. Not much makes sense, at all, anymore about what is going on with the continuity of this franchise. Add to it that the movie isn't scary, AT ALL and there is little to no character development and this is just a film that never makes you care about who lives and who dies. Ugh.....very disappointed! Not much faith for, what once was, one of my favorite movie franchises of all time, going forward. Alien and Aliens are in the mix of all time meaningful movies ever. Alien 3 wasn't perfect, but it is still good.....all downhill from there, and the interesting questions Prometheus raised were stepped on in Covenant. Expand

How does someone who became world renown for his ability to create intelligent entertainment turn his back on previous work and simply phone in his part before cashing a paycheck? Find the answer before you waste a single moment of your life with Alien: Covenant. Imagine being enthralled with the original, inspired by the follow-up and then being let down by each successive installment. If you thought any of those latter variations paled in comparison, this one will truly astound you when you realize Sir Ridley Scott was involved. Sidebar note: I predict the next "Blade Runner" movie will suck balls. What a shame that Neil Bloomkamp's desire to bring back the terrifying version of Alien is seemingly lost now forever. Expand

Alien: Covenant is a hugely disappointing movie.

The Prometheus movie, despite its flaws, set a wonderful stage and asked great sci-fi questions concerning the origins of humanity. Sadly all of it has been scrapped with Alien: Covenant, and the "Alien" prefix tells you clearly that the studio execs want to get rid of Prometheus and its lore (it wasn't titled "Alien: Prometheus" after all).

At the end of Prometheus Dr. Ellen Shaw set course for the Engineers' homeworld with the android David, but sadly 1) the Engineers are absent from the new movie and 2) Noomi Rapace has been cast out of the sequel and her character has been replaced with a bunch of losers, who are nothing more than dog food for the Alien creature. It's rather convenient. Because I presume Prometheus lore has to disappear for some reason.

OK, I am salty about not getting the Prometheus sequel I was expecting. That would have been fine if this movie, after having cut all its ties with Prometheus, was great. Or at least good. It's not though. It's mostly pathetic. Michael Fassbender is awesome in his dual role of the two cloned androids (David and Walter), but he can't save the movie from being a disaster. The rest of the cast are, as in the words of the first Alien movie, "expendable". The story is full of laughable plotholes, illogical decisions, and brain-dead characters who just wait their time to be munched away by the Alien. At least the plot twist towards the end of the movie does the job of aligning the prequel movies more closely with the Alien mythos.

Alien: Covenant is really just a link to some future Alien movie which will please Alien fans. Prometheus and its high sci-fi concepts are dead.

This movie in incredibly complex.
On the surface it's terrible, once you start thinking about the themes and symbolism it seems coherent and well thought out, and then you're thinking about it how it fits in the Alien mythos and it becomes terrible yet again. In the end Alien Covenant is a 100% Prometheus sequel - all the themes and ideas discussed harken back to Prometheus. It has little to do with the Alien movies, apart from aping whole sequences (why can't Scott think of something new but copying previous works in the franchise?) and actually ruining the Alien franchise by its very existence. It saddens me greatly that in the end a movie with such ambitions as Covenant is worse than Prometheus. The latter was a Von Daniken adaptation that had some good ideas and an interesting theme but ultimately was doomed by the stupid characters populating the script. In the end it was just inoffensive. Covenant is not only filled with stupid characters but is also incompetent - in its narrative structure, camerawork and editing. It's a train wreck and I cannot recommend it at all unless you like getting into narrative themes of movies, in which case it may be worth your time for this particular purpose.

Fassbender was awesome in his dual role of David and Walter and i was really surprised by Danny McBride I went into the film not really expecting much from him but he shone in a serious role and hope to see him do more. Waterson holds her own on screen and i found her likeable enough as the tough female lead we see in Alien films. I particularly liked Carmen Ejogo's character of Karine and was disappointed that her role wasn't larger. Overall i think this was a solid entry into the Alien franchise and i'm hopeful for the future of the series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They had such an amazing setup after Prometheus to drive the story about the engineers, instead they decided on a 90's college horror movie, I mean, they even have a shower scene, with the additional hentai reference.
A super advanced race, far beyond humanity, gets "tricked" into accepting a rogue ship filled with weapons, and in the same spirit the AI on the human ship doesn't realize it's another android coming aboard? Weak doesn't even begin to describe it.
The worst of the worst is however when the captain discovers David to be completely broken, using the basement for experiments and seeing the corpse of Shaw, he then proceeds to follow David into a chamber of alien eggs, and trusts him when he says it's OK. Was being brain dead a requirement for becoming second in command?

If you like Prometheus and the Alien movies you need to watch it for completeness, but don't waste money going to the cinema.

A group of space explorers land on a remote planet where lives "guess who?" There are some electric encounters that seem more intense and extended that in the past, but there are also plenty of concentrated dialogue passages (and more emotion). Since the scenario's a given, it's up to the filmmakers to offer something new. They didn't. But this film still plays out with grand visuals and a sprinkling of violent, tense alien encounters. The CGI is good and not too distracting. Overall, this movie has some good things going for it, but the problem is, as hard as it tries, it does not really add anything interesting to the franchise or to sci-fi in general. Ridley Scott leans way too much on Fassbender to carry the movie. The story-line tries way to hard to marry the Prometheus and Alien plots, when it really needs to just pick one. I actually thought that Prometheus was a really good movie, and would have been more interested in seeing some continuation of that rather than a half-baked Alien movie. As others have mentioned already, the movie at times is ruined by seemingly unrealistic actions and decisions made by the characters. Further, Ridley Scott has forgotten how to execute character development, and ultimately, we don't care if one of them gets torn apart by an Alien. This is frustrating because it seems like he tries to develop the characters and illicit some emotional attachment by the audience, but it fails. Everything seems superficial. I think the movie is worth a see for die hard Alien franchise fans, but it is overall very underwhelming. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I will say that "I loved Prometheus". If you didn't, than my review will do you no service.

Now I loved Alien and Aliens as well. All other titles tied to the Alien franchise have been ok, but not great. With Prometheus, I enjoyed Scott's effort to take the story in a new direction, tackling bigger questions about the creation of humanity, why our gods left us, and ultimately discovering that they in fact wanted to destroy us...their own creation. The hero, Dr. Shaw, spearheaded the spirit of the movie, angry at the Engineers at the end and yelling "why do you hate us?" Leaving us with a huge cliffhanger, Shaw and David are able to fly the Engineer's ship with a set course to their home-world. WOW! Now that's exciting! I watched this movie 4 times. I tried to imagine what the first encounter would be like. I was excited to learn if they would be instantly hostile, or would they attempt to communicate. What answers could they extract from our creators? Even though David wasn't completely trustworthy, I was interested to see how Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and David would get along, as she patched him up and showed mercy...essentially she saved him, and together they were going to unlock humanities' biggest secrets.

BUT NOPE!!! I was forced to try and forget about ALL of that. Even though I knew Covenant was going to be focused on a whole new crew, I was encouraged by the YouTube promos as we saw David and Dr. Shaw together, conversing, as he safely wakes her from her long journey. I now realize that was solely an attempt to grab my attention and wallet day one before I found out that it was all misleading. The promos even used James Franco to draw, which convinced my wife to join me to watch the movie, and both our jaws dropped as he gets fried in his stasis pod before ever speaking a single word.

Instead of taking me to a destination Prometheus seemed to promise we were headed, I landed in a place all too familiar. Another mostly generic Alien horror movie. The plot is, crew follows signal to unknown planet, gets killed by Aliens except a few lucky people escape. And because it's an Alien move, you can already guess that one will be a kick-ass female.

So here is the thing, let's forget Prometheus ever happened, because it is now MOSTLY unimportant and only serves as a reason for the paranoid android to end up on this planet. FINE, I'm over it. Just give me a good Alien movie and I'll be happy enough.

NOPE! Denied again! The unbelievable amount of predictability in the movie, compounded by the absolutely stunning stupidity of the crew and their decisions, depriving the film of any connection to realism ruins the science fiction. There are too many problems to list, but I will mention a few of my favorites that caused me to groan and roll my eyes:

1) Perform no eval of the planet. Just drop a ship and lets see what happens. And leave some teammates alone along the way to "set-up shop" even though they were essentially a scouting team sent to investigate a signal. No problem there.

2) A contamination suit on an Alien planet? NAH! Who needs that? Even breathable air was not examined in the movie prior to them jumping off the ship with now helmets. When that happened, I had to tell myself "ok, perhaps they just want us to assume that they tested the air quality of course...why film a scene to prove it?" How about being cautious of airborne contaminants, just to be on the safe side?

3) Two exact replica androids (one evil, one not) get in a fight, one comes back alive with the same clothing and missing hand as the good one...but MAYBE you still may want to do a little questioning since it's a super-intelligent android that doesn't feel pain? Oh, that's right, the bad-ass female hero thought of that as soon as she gets locked into her stasis chamber right at the end. Damn...I could see you were a little suspicious...bad timing on your part girlfriend!

4) The "red-shirts" were all WAY too obvious. To the point that they may as well have been wearing red shirts (if you don't get reference...basically, people who will obviously die). So many pointless characters who received ZERO character building. There was no weight to any of their deaths.

I could go on. David's logic for performing his atrocities were so far fetched and illogical. The Engineers who one would assume are light years more advanced just watched as their ship returned and dropped their own super weapon on top of their heads. Hr Giger's art design that helped establish the Alien franchise is pretty much nowhere to be seen.

This movie was a spit in the face to Prometheus and a lousy attempt to cash in on the Alien formula. I was told, apparently, that Ridley Scott changed his vision after people **** about Prometheus not having enough brainless blood and gore, and couldn't grasp the bigger questions and appeal in that movie. If that's true, than shame on the haters and shame on Ridley for listening to them. RENT THIS

I think this movie deserve it and other people need to know and prepare before they will watch it or not (hope not!).
So to make long things short I want to make a citation of Albert Einstein quote:
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."
Both things - universe & human stupidity present in this movie. It's pity the movie is not about the Universe, not about the diversity it provides, or about the possibilities. This movie does answer no question about everything was asked in Prometheus. It just adds one more layer over those questions with the new ones. That's all. In background stupid people do stupid decisions and die stupidly.
I gave it 3 score only for the following:
1. It's in my favorite franchise - I think there is no better horror idea that Alien Xenomorph by Giger. And Alien is present, even not in final form.
2. Android is great, even with all this gay ****
3. Idea about humans&gods&robots&creators/etc.
That's all folks. I hope next movie won't be such a B-movie.

I don't understand people that just can't chill out and enjoy the movie. It's true, not every character desition it's a logical one, but we know that as spectators, not "feeling" the tension that a person would have in the movie's horrible situations.

The acting was great, the horrors were truly horrific, the overall story it's on point and the whole atmosphere of the planet it's truly obscure. It's really Alien gone gothic. It's simply a better and more balanced movie than Prometheus. All the ideas here fit well and have enough time. The universe they have created can produce so much fun for us now!

If there is one thing that I objectively think could have done better it's the ending. It's obvious, but it's intentionally obvious. The direction could have been made in a way the plot twist was more unexpected. Nonetheless, the overall idea of it is truly masterful and it's a good ending, it just could be better executed.

Fassbender shines here acting as two robots, how paradojical is that?

I would recommend it any day, just watch it without children.

Wait, you ask. It's a SF movie with xenomorphs, androids and spacefaring ships. Of course we need to suspense disbelief, moron! Sure, you're right, but there is such a thing as INTERNAL LOGIC and this movie pretty much kicked it out and dumped down the gutter. It's not even in the plot, since - while extremely predictable - is serviceable and fun to follow.

It's in the fact, that THIS group of soldiers and scientists is even stupider than the bunch in Prometheus.

I know! I didn't think it was possible to achieve, but here we go. For me it is an extremely cheap horror / thrille (a movie in general!) if the plot requires every single human being in it to act like complete morons. If the corporation / country had a casting for the crew of Covenant, it picked the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel... Idiots, incompetent dumbos with zero self-preservation instict.

From their first encounter we see that this bunch of 'heroes' is untrained for anything, incapable of dealing in any situation that is harder that turning the light on, ill-prepared to make decision and completely unaware of the idea of COMMON SENSE. You as a viewer just rot there in your chair, cringing in pain and suffering as you watch the Crew of Covenant strive with every breath to end themselves in various fashion of spectacular idiocy. I don't want to spoil the events of this movie, but this people shouldn't crew a god-damn swing in a kiddie park...

Visuals are great. It's a shame that there is so little Xenomorph and its reduced to a pretty brainless beast, lacking in horror and dread of an ultimate predator. Music is solid, build atmosphere well. Some acting is fantastic to be sure.

It's a shame that I couldn't enjoy this movie because the trope of Horror Characters being Idiots is so mighty in this one.

All the waiting after Prometheus for this? Shame on you Mr. Scott. This is the worst movie of the series. I want my money back. Next time hire some real writers and some real actors.

This film takes place after the Prometheus mission had failed because of bad outcomes, and Covenant takes a huge step forward! I enjoyed Prometheus, but I though Covenant was much better and it has lots of gore. Ridley Scott is a legendary director, making this film intense and scary, and sometimes this movie did without music. The camera work is absolute stunning, and the acting fits the tone of the movie so well. Surprisingly, the recent "Alien" film is very realistic to what the reaction of people would be if they were on a ship in space, and found Alien life. Everyone cares for each other, and this movie has very distinct couples and characters, plus stunning visuals. I hope this movie gets some more recognition and love, because I think Alien: Covenant is a great film. It might be my favorite Alien film. Expand

The acting is goodAlien: covenant is not a bad film, but it's not a good film either. It's somewhere in the middle. Visually it is at times stunning but the weak plot holds it back and makes the viewer not care about the action sequences. The acting is good considering they are working with no character development. Apart from Michael Fassbender's character you really don't care for anyone else. When someone dies you often have no idea who they are and what relationship they have to the other characters. The film is basically Prometheus 2. Unfortunately these films are now seen as cannon to the Alien universe so all of the amazing ideas and discussion we had about where the Aliens came from or who the space jockey's are have all been answered; badly. The evolution of the xenomorph is so ridiculous and unbelievable it has ruined any imagination that was applied to the original Alien films. Really we would have been better off without the Covenant and Prometheus. The Alien design is also weak, they just weren't scary. The CGI stands out a mile off, the effects used in Alien and Aliens are far better. I personally still do not see these films as part of the Alien story, to me Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 are the real movies, everything else are spin offs. As a popcorn movie it works. You can tune out and enjoy the visuals and sound and walk away happy but will forget the experience within an hour of leaving the cinema. There;s a few nods to the original film which are cool and there's the occasional memorably tense scene (look out for the Alien hatching from a crew members back while a doctor is locked in a medical room with him). But they are few and far between. There's also a very strange homoerotic scene with Michael Fassbender and Michael Fassbender which is so hilarious that it feels more like it should be in a parody film. Also look out for the scene where Fassbender plays god to a new born alien who mimics his 'creation' stance! It was a real cringe scene. So why have I given if a 6 if I'm so negative about the film? Well I did kind of enjoy it, if it wasn't an Alien film it would be an okay summer sci-fi. It's a visually pleasing date movie. It gives a little smile and entertains as a big dumb Hollywood blockbuster. Expand

The main concern is the continued convolution of the mythology, but it is fairly balanced with heart-stopping, horrific tension and gut-wrenching gore. These two movies establish a definite, if not slightly-unstable, basis for the (allegedly) two new prequel movies that will bridge the gap between the polarizing Prometheus and highly-praised Alien. Although the stunning cinematography does not waver throughout the movie, the special effects are slightly questionable in aspects of the movie less renowned (chest-burster especially). In summation, Covenant takes the raw story of Prometheus and enhances it for the delight of die-hard fans of the original in a way that will please only the attentive and educated. Its exploration of morality and hierarchy of creation is interesting, thought-provoking, and adds a deeper meaning to the movie underneath its preliminary horror-thriller-action combo, although some would argue its execution is shaky and a major contributing factor to the confusion. I really do not understand the overall favorable reviews from critics. In "Alien" and "Aliens" you could sink your teeth (ahem) into some very well-drawn and well-acted characters, and invest in them, well before the acid-for-blood hits the fan. And when it did, it was compelling, dreadful, terrifying and chaotic. Here, nothing. Empty shells staged for some poorly paced bloodletting. Worse yet, this movie is less about the Alien and more about "The Fassbender Show" with seemingly endless heavy-handed dialog on android aspirations... We've been here before, and much more succinctly. The rules of Alien biology clearly established in the first two films are wildly violated here (it is supposed to take days for full alien incubation - but we don't have time for that in this script, so let's just take 5 minutes this go-round), yet one would think Ridley would be loyal to his own invention. Worse yet, in one unbelievable jump-the-shark moment, Ridley doesn't seem to even be aware that he's channeling "Spaceballs" - at which point I totally checked out. Oh God, and then there's the moment Fassbender's android PLAYS THE THEME FROM PROMETHEUS on a recorder/flute thingie. Are you serious. And FYI to FX teams, a mix of CGI and a well-crafted on-set in-camera creature would still be superior to the nearly 100% CGI creature FX here. And lastly, zero continuity is set forth between this and the events approximately 15 years later in the original Alien. OK, ok, the space FX, spaceships & indoor/outdoor settings are all beautifully done, I'll give them that, but on no level do they redeem the pic. Ridley otherwise has an astounding body of work and he could rest on those laurels... Wish he would. Expand

There's something wrong with a movie that exists as an excuse to show people being violently ripped apart in various ways by something that God apparently created (since He created everything seen and unseen).

The movie does have top notch acting with all the alien scenes being really intense
and gory which is satisfactory. The biggest issue with the movie is the mixing of alien and Prometheus, After the backlash of Prometheus , The studio pretty in a confused state on how to sell the movie , so the two tones converges both and partially answers the questions raised in Prometheus.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i see myself as a huge fan of the alien series and personally i loved this film i enjoyed it so much I've already seen it twice, Prometheus left us with a lot of questions and covenant answered a lot, yet also left us with even more questions that i only imagine will be answered in the next addition to the franchise. It's not very suspenseful though, and I found that part disappointing. There are also some feminist nods with the 2nd-in-command male seeming awkward, scared, and slightly incapable while the female 3rd-in-command is just immediately confident, has a plan, always knows what to do, bosses people around at-will, etc. They go out of their way to feature women in "stronger" roles, and I feel that takes away slightly from the story -- we lose the sense of humanity and fear from the first two Alien movies with Ripley. On that note, the female co-lead (or whatever her role is) is not very believable. I found the ending to be anti-climactic (just ask yourself why an alien all of a sudden attacks something mechanical versus a human being). To me, this felt like half a movie in that the movie really takes shape around Fassbender's David character. There's a great twist at the end that feels like it should lead to a more satisfying movie, but that's the end. You never feel like the two main survivors are in danger. While this is visually stimulating and attempts to fill holes, I'm left asking why their solution for the mythology of the xenomorph is so simple. Even when it's explained, it doesn't seem that horrifying -- the music is happy which left me feeling very confused. There's gore, but there's really no emotional significance or true fear with everything that happens -- you can see it coming a mile away. The pacing is different than Prometheus, and there's a lot more action, but I found myself only being slightly less bored. There are still holes in the movie. The ending feels rushed. What else can I say? I don't think it's worth seeing in theaters unless you're desperate for a movie to watch. Expand

The film fails to provide any reason to care about any of the humans. There are too many of them and no attempt is made to develop thier character. This film is about David, not aliens, not really and not the humans. There is no tension, no desperation, no drama. It's just about another crazy robot. It's basically a prequel or a part one of what they believe will be an ongoing development of the Alien universe in film. This story might fly in a graphic novel or comic but not as a film. I paid way too much for far too little. I really feel that Alien Covenant is a bit arrogant and presumptuous. It basically says come pay for all our movies if you ever want to see a xenomorph again. Also I think they need to look up the definition of "covenant" because I saw no such thing anywhere in this film. What a waste and total disappointment. Expand

Lore completely ruined. Xenomorphs no longer bad ass. CGI was terrible, characters are again stupid as they were in Prometheus. Was not scary at all. Full of horror tropes. Convoluted. Riddey Scott has a boner for Fassbender.
