They bank too heavily on nostalgia which I don’t like. I feel that this movie should not have been made. I feel the same way about any Live Action remake that has been released or is coming out. Here are some positives. Most of the cast does a good job. Will Smith isn’t trying to beat out Robin Williams as the Genie but still does a great job. The soundtrack is decent. It’s still incredibly catchy but not as catchy as the original. The only song I feel that is better in this movie is Arabian Nights. All the other songs are good but not as outstanding as the original. Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positives. The pacing of this film is way off. It feels rushed at certain points and the end of the film starts to drag and it takes too long. It also doesn’t help that this film is 38 minutes longer than the original. Marwan Kenzari is a decent actor but he didn’t do a good job in this film. In my opinion, he didn’t know what to do with the character. Jafar never felt like a major threat during the film which is a problem because he is the main villain. There were some changes that were made to the story but I felt they really didn’t work for me. Jasmine’s added character arc was a big meh for me. It felt a little out of place within the narrative. The new songs they added were meh for me. They aren’t as memorable as the other songs in the film. The effects on the Genie are still as bad as they were in the trailer which was very distracting. The film is very brightly lit which makes it feel like a Disney Channel Original Film. There are also some slow motion scenes that come out of nowhere and make no sense at all. Overall, Aladdin may have a half decent score but fails to capture the magic of the original film. I give Aladdin a 2/10. Expand

Aladdin (2019): While the first half is just a shot-for-shot recreation of the original, and it fails to create any sort of chemistry between the two leads, it still is mildly entertaining, and the cinematography is surprisingly great. But,Aladdin (2019): While the first half is just a shot-for-shot recreation of the original, and it fails to create any sort of chemistry between the two leads, it still is mildly entertaining, and the cinematography is surprisingly great. But, the second half is where this movie takes a full dive into stupidity: it becomes a cliched mess, the pacing becomes extremely inconsistent, the cinematography becomes bland, the dance choreography is generic, and it "overstays it's welcome" pretty hard. However, there were some surprises: Will Smith, Naomi Scott, and Marwan Kenzari who play the Genie, Jasmin, and Jafar respectively, actually bring great performances. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good cityscapes and extra design, costume design was excellent, but the dialogue, songs and casting are all terrible. Aladdin lacks the charm of his cartoon counterpart and the sultan is nothing like his adorable, bouncy, happy cartoon counterpart. Even jafar comes off weak rather than diabolically charming. Iago is pointless and abu is actually ugly and offputting compared to cute.

The only decent thing about this movie was the graphics and cinematography.

I wouldn't see it for money. Maybe if i were bored waiting in a doctor's office.

Also, they took liberties with the story. In the cartoon, Jasmine just wants to be free and travel the world. Here she wants to be sultan. Thanks SJW forced narrative.

Will Smith helps but only a little.. His performance is still super cringy.

In every possible way the cartoon is superior.

It is very fun to watch. The singing, acting, and visuals are great. However the plot has a lot of holes (e.g The wishes) and the blandness of Jafar and Jafar as a whole put this from good to slightly above average. Enjoyment wise it is a solid 8/10.

The cast is amiable with Will Smith taking on the role of the fast-talking street-wise blue genie. He does a lively job (helped by lots of special effects), but the inevitable comparisons to the original Robin Williams will find him falling short. Director Guy Ritchie has included some of his signature chases, but without much clever action. The visuals are colorful, there are plenty of special effect and the songs are tuneful, but the finished product lacks magic. Despite some early slow going, young audiences should be entertained. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you have never seen Aladdin and like CGI more then animation go right ahead.
If you think that it will improve on the old 1992 movie then I would say that you should not watch it.
SPOILERS:
- jasmine has been made more scared. Not sure why they did this but in the old movie she wasn't scared to jump to other roofs and now she is.
- Iago's personality is gone. Did you like that he got angry and his revenge on the sultan at the end? NO MORE. now he is just a bird that knows that Aladdin the diamond in the rough how? I don't know.
- carpet knows about the lamp.(didn't need to be added) Aladin also cleans the lamp like he knows something will come out of it(maybe that is just me).
- Aladdin first wish doesn't count(the rules are you rub the lamp you say I wish and that's that) now because Aladdin didn't rub the lamp a sec before he said I wish they didn't count it while to spawn the genie he had to rub the lamp so that would mean that part 1 is already complete. When he can't wish because he is underwater he gets to sign a paper that declares that he made a wish not sure why they think it was necessary.
- Aladdin is really awkward when he has to introduce himself to the sultan/Jasmin. Not sure why they did that. he even said that he was really good at pretending("If you don't have anything you have to pretend like you own everything") - The genie even when Jafar is the master just teleports the carpet if he can do that why not teleport the lamp to Aladdin's hand??
- When Jafar's staff gets broken the second time with help from the sultan the spell that Jafar cast on Iago disappears. Not sure why this happens because Aladdin didn't transform back in a prince at the same time while that was also Jafar's magic doing.
- While flying against Iago Aladdin gets hold of the lamp. Not sure why he didn't wish for Jafar's wishes to be undone but that would have made the movie shorter.
- Jafar's last wish: "For my final wish I wish to become the most powerful being in the universe more powerful than you"(you references to the genie) but he just ends up like the genie. not sure what made him more powerful.
- When Aladdin wishes the genie free he becomes a human. Why did this need changing? Why not just leave him as a ghost? Now it seems more like he was under a spell just like Jafar is now.
-I didn't really talk a lot about the extra sub-characters: Dolia(maiden of the princes) and Haki(the commander) they were both ok but were not really necessary. I would rather have seen a fight between Aladdin and Jafar like in the old movie but not it was pretty short in that part (Iago and Aladdin were fighting for some time for the lamp).
- Last but least I wanted to overlook it but some else also talked about it: Jasmin becomes the sultan. felt more cramped in and just there to please the feminists. It's not a worse ending than the original but it also doesn't really make it better. Now instead of Aladdin becoming sultan while he is not a real prince, Jasmin will become the sultan.
What I liked:
- The music, it was the original but then was changed to be more modern(beatbox was added etc.) and there were even some original songs added.
What I think they should have changed:
- when Aladdin almost gets out of the cave of wonders Jafar could just help him to get outside the cave. Then would Jafar have the lamp and could just give Aladdin some money for his troubles. If you ask why would Jafar not just let him dye in the cave? Because Aladdin isn't a thread to Jafar at first. He is just a thief that wants some money. Jafar had nothing to fear.
Something to think about:
At the start, he tells Aladdin that gold and power are not good whiches maybe that was something that the genie experienced for himself? (he also throws away Jafar's lamp just like in the old movie to the gave of wonders and says that a couple of thousand years will cool him off).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. starts out pretty good, songs were ok and the special effects are really good. the movie broke mostly when aladdin is trying to convince the sultan that he is a prince and gets tongue tied. then, a magical voice spoke into my ear saying "leave now" and thats when i started to hate the film. but when the genie kept telling alladin he was not really a prince and he should be himself. what??? so, fake prince? i walked out then. music is mediocre and sounds like a million other songs you can easily play on your guitar. fine, i just expect a little more. i would wait until it comes on commercial TV, it will play much better. 'Aladdin' seems like a check-list, in which scenes only happen because they happened in the 1992 original. Directed by Guy Ritchie ('Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' and 'Snatch'), the film obviously centers around our title character (played by Mena Massoud, who does look and sound like his animated counterpart) running around and stealing from the marketplace of Agrabah along with his monkey Abu. He then meets a beautiful young woman, Jasmine (Naomi Scott), but is unaware that she is a princess. They seem to get along and almost fall in love as she finds his warm and kind charming personality somewhat rare and unique, as well as how he helped her get out of trouble. Meanwhile our main villain, Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), is after a powerful lamp, but needs a "Diamond in the Rough", and that comes from Aladdin, so he recruits him to voluntarily enter the cave of wonders and retrieve the magical possession. Aladdin, unfortunately, doesn't escape but manages to keep the lamp, and discovers that there is an all powerful Genie (A blue Will Smith) who can grant him three wishes. The two form a friendship and come up with ways for Aladdin to impress Jasmine, as well as the Genie's promise for his freedom. As I said above, the film feels like a check-list (only if you have seen the original), scenes are sometimes structured differently in an attempt to make it feel more original, and a new song is also added to make it different. The only major issue here is the CGI. While Smith does not repeat or do an imitation of what the late Robin Williams did back in 1992, and incorporates his own charisma to the role, the CGI to make Smith look like a person-like puff of blue smoke is visually jarring, as he looks inconsistent to the environment which surrounds him. For example, when he's talking to Aladdin, the light shining on one side of Aladdin's face is shining on the other side of the Genie's. It's almost as if Smith shot his scenes separately to the other actors from time to time. Plus, his movement can be a little frightening from time to time. Overall, the acting is solid, Naomi Scott is the biggest surprise from this film, and I guess it is faithful (yet massively unoriginal) to the animated classic. I am unsure as to why Disney thought Guy Ricthie (again, the director of 'Snatch') was the appropriate choice for this project. Next thing you know, they'll announce Quentin Tarantino to helm the live-action remake of 'The Little Mermaid' (1989). Expand

Whilst watchable this Aladdin fails to fly even with the aid of a magic carpet. Will Smith, although not bad, is no substitute for the comic brilliance of Robin Williams as the genie and the songs lack strong orchestration in their arrangements. If the average person of today got a magic lamp, odds are the fulfillments for each of their three wishes would be seen in the fantasy, Aladdin.

Wish #1: Rule by a king…

…beneath the Magic Kingdom. That’s right, a mouse king ruler who cares more about entertainment than moral direction of those beneath himself. What’s the problem with having such a king? He makes the public believe an attractive person without artistic talent has such a thing. Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine succumbs to that very curse as she gives some incredibly painful acting. Her forgetful new song, “Speechless,” adds nothing of narrative importance, proving a big fat fail in this cinematic product’s attempt at further expanding Cinderella’s castle into homes worldwide. The magic winds up absent all throughout, it’s not found in the single-shot-take that opens the feature by sweeping through a street, palace, and cave, and it’s especially not found in the “A Whole New World” number where Aladdin and Jasmine just sit and sing and go nowhere. There’s no magic because there’s no heat in any human conflict to suggest anyone there is even awake and alert.

Ironically most of the energy comes from cases of Will Smith’s rapping that is weirdly out of place even by Genie standards. This whole movie in fact feels like a package of 90’s nostalgia with all the original songs having the rock band remix treatment as if listening to Disney Mania 5. That package includes watching the actors standing awkwardly in moments that ironically are when Will Smith is his funniest… because everyone else is comparatively worse. The Lion King remake will most likely resort to similar artistic exterior to overshadow the interior. It’s honestly insulting to know that this film’s focus on looking pretty goes against the theme of Beauty and the Beast: beauty is found within. If somebody in the production crew lived by that, then this music video for nostalgic millennials would have remembered the satirical tongue-in-cheek humor the original animated feature wasn’t afraid to exploit.

Wish #2: No racism.

Even good desires, particularly money, can turn evil when it’s wanted for the wrong reasons. In this case, trying to fight hatred between two ethnicities could lead to forced political correctness that results in accidental racism. In this location of purely Arab people, one Caucasian is cast to play a Scottish man speaking with a horrible, HORRIBLE accent—the opposite of progressive. The whole cast in fact seems aware about their amplified stereotypes, Will Smith in particular clearly seems aware of the contradictory dialogue. One minute, he tells Aladdin to be genuine, then the very next, he encourages the opposite by making him dance against his will.

The treatment of gender is fatally flawed too, even a female-directed motion picture starring an almost completely male cast, The Hurt Locker, empowers women better than this does. Jasmine is way less brave than her animated counterpart; she won’t even jump across rooftops without a street rat’s help. It’s invigorating how these cultural stereotypes do more harm than good at Hollywood diversity, and director Guy Ritchie deserves a lot of the blame. He decides to exploit impressive screen spectacle with the Cave of Wonders and the “Friend Like Me” musical number, but because no tonal consistency is established, the cast never does anything besides let their hands dangle.

Wish #3: Inaccessibility to weapons.

You may think, “What family entertainment goes against its own violence prevention initiative?” Simple. Mena Massoud as Aladdin hurts your eyes to watch his survival of each laborious production day; he hurts your ears to hear him talk-sing while reading off a cue-card. Your tongue will hurt from tasting the bad dance choreography; your brain will hurt from the stupid adaptation mistakes (the “Prince Ali” number lyrics mention “White” Persian monkeys, yet the monkeys seen are NOT white). Afterward, you come home aching over the whole face, pain that will transfer into your soul.

The torture then continues when a dull end credits dance number finalizes that nobody there had fun at any point of production. Guy Ritchie’s vomit-colored peaceful efforts drops a bomb with a big “US” written on the side for Saudi Arabia. Then, when the bomb explodes on land, it makes their cities look just as ugly as Aladdin makes it all look. While that country is not a terrorist nation like the news think, it’s also not a mouse-guarded honeypot lamp free for kids to go rub.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Movie Was pretty good. Most of the actors were fine and despite what i had feared Will Smith is an amazing genie and probably the best actor in the entire movie. it recreates jokes and creates new ones giving you a joy an old Disney was. while most of the new songs were a hit and miss it was a blast listening to recreations of the original songs. My only 2 complaints are 1). actor casted as Jafar. Not saying he's a bad actor but i believe he would would fit as any other character but personally he didn't feel like a Jafar. Jafar in the original is man known for his hypnotic charm as he lures you in, he was a man you wouldn't trust but at the same time you want to hear him out. The actor whole personality as Jafar was trying to be evil and massively lacked that hypnotic charm which makes a Jafar Character not Jafar at all. i'm sure the actor will star in a big role and be famous for that but any character would've been better than casting him has the serpent sorcerer we love. my second complaint is all the cultures they tried to serve on one main dish. This is Arabia not Punjabi, Desi, Persian, Egyptian, ect ect. It felt like they were trying to cater to a bunch of different cultures which ruined the cultural fun and made everything, including the dancing, feel very very stereotypical. i think the movie would've been more fun culturally if it focused on Arabian culture, some of Egyptian culture, And Some of India culture (i say this as Jasmines mother is an Indian Kingdom if you were to Google it) and would be a fun things people would learn about the culture as a whole. The cultural thing i point out however is because i am Islamic and i say this as it would be awesome for people to see true Arabian culture rather than the stereotypical culture most of the world sees in the south Asian, north east Africa it thinks of. Overall i did enjoy Aladdin other than the culture. Expand

One of the better live adaptations. Still, some of the choices the filmmakers made for this film were odd - especially choosing to change some minor plot points that lessen Aladdin's cleverness.

The camerawork also contained some baffling choices. Nearly every action and dance sequence looks like it was noticeably sped up, which made them jarring to watch. I also can't understand why they refuse to cast people who can actually sing well (excluding Jasmine, who's voice is exceptional). Aladdin and the Genie largely speak-sing their way through the musical numbers.

Expand

Disappointing. A downgrade from the original in nearly every way. The Prince Ali song was good and some of Genie’s dancing is fun to watch but otherwise not happy.

The part I was not looking forward to: Genie was surprisingly the best part of the film. I mean, I was not looking forward to Jafar either but that proved to be spot on gut feeling. The main actor and actress are kind of bland and their acting does give off great chemistry like the original characters had. Will Smith steals the show very often and with what else is on display, you will be glad that he did. The musical numbers are fantastic and incredibly energetic. I personally left the film a little sour due to some questionable changes and character motivations. Another Disney classic hit my the mediocre Live Action bug that Disney has become obsessed with. A magical masterpiece without the usual Disney virtue signals.

I remember my thrill and exhilaration when I first saw Optimus Prime in a real life (well CGI anyway) in the movies which brought the Transformers cartoons to "real life". It was all in the recognition and I felt like a little kid in a candy store. I've never felt the same about any other movie. Until now, thanks to Aladdin. When I was younger I watched the animated version of Aladdin three times - yes three times - in the movies. I loved the show. So I held my breath when I went to watch the real life 2019 version of Aladdin (and a blue CGI genie of course) movie. I was worried Disney would trash any semblance of the original animated Aladdin with their usual in-your-face, virtue-signalling, activist crap (like they did on Star Wars: The Last Jedi) or removing the very essence of the characters they portray (like they did with Tolkien, removing the man's Christian faith from the man himself). Thankfully, they didn't kill this incarnation of Aladdin. I found myself feeling like a kid again, mesmerised by the wonder and fun that is Agrabah and Aladdin. It was movie magic all over again, all thanks to a brilliant cast and producer Guy Ritchie. The cast, ok, where do I start. Mena Massoud captured the very essence of cheeky, suave and big-eyed Aladdin - it's quite incredible that he managed to, at times, mimick the animation! Naomi Scott capably represented the beautiful, steady and confident Princess Jasmine - she had guts, she stands on her own, she is also all-heart. Both of them had a very cute chemistry that was reminiscent of the animated movie many years earlier. Will Smith truly and successfully made the genie his own, down to the funny antics. Marwan Kenzari played a much younger looking Jafar than in the movies, but this also worked alongside the main characters. Oh and the monkey Abu, is just too cute.

I believe what makes this Aladdin movie a real success is twofold. Firstly, it respects the original film - the beautiful songs, the familiar settings, Agrabah's look and feel, the blue genie, the young Aladdin and Jasmine - they're all there. If you loved the animated Aladdin the way I did, you'd love this live "real" version of Aladdin. Secondly, it also stamped it's own mark to differentiate itself from the original film. The dance sequences were a mix of the traditional and modern, a fusion of cultural dances. The familiar songs were arranged differently and felt contemporary. Aladdin and Jasmine, by virtue of being real humans, really maximised the "reality" factor of what is supposed to be a mere fairy tale. And Will Smith successfully stepped out of Robin Williams' genie, and truly made this genie his own - this was important because if Will Smith tried to be a Robin Williams, the genie would've failed miserably. Nah, this blue genie is a completely different character (only Will Smith can play THIS genie) at the core, yet retained the jovial, fun-loving and irreverent personality that embodies the genie. The only one who is very different in terms of look and feel was Jafar, and that was OK. This Jafar felt modern and younger, though I think they could've made him a bit more "sneakier" in the looks department. All in all, I loved the cast.

Honestly, I watched this new Aladdin movie, completely entranced by the colourful, beautiful, "Whole New World" of Agrabah, and yet I immediately connected with every single character as they appeared, down to the flying carpet itself - this movie is all heart, all beauty, all humour, everything you'd want in a movie. This is truly one of the best movies I've watched in years. Honestly, this was a wonderful, magical experience. I highly recommend this - well done to the cast and crew of this show. I'll be watching it again! Highly highly highly recommended.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not going to lie, I was nervous but at the same time anxious. The first musical number "Arabian Nights" made my hair stand on end. The film is enjoyed from beginning to end, with good musical numbers, magic and the best performances by Will Smith, Naomi Scott and Mena Massoud, they have very good chemistry. Everything that the trailers see is different on the big screen, with respect to the genius CGI and the VFX, visually stuning. Enjoy the character of Dalia, funny, sympathetic. With respect to the new song "Speechless" I thought it was a good addition in this live action. Naomi's performance touches the heart of anyone and it really comes. "Prince Ali" different, colorful, splendid. Undoubtedly, until now one of the best live action. The only bad thing I have to say is Jafar, they do not take advantage of the character and downplay it. Is it threatening? Yes, but not as much as in the original. Expand

Some things are best left animated.

It lacks the energy and magic from the 1992 movie, which is strange to me because with Guy Ritchie directing I expected some chaos - just watch 'King Arthur: Legend of the Sword' or any other movie he directed. Also, Jafar sucks in this movie and it isn't Marwan Kenzari, just painfully miscast. The visual effects...yeah, lets not go there.

However, it is entertaining enough to sit through. Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine really makes the role her own, especially during the musical segments. Mena Massoud is fine as Aladdin, but at times I felt like he tried to duplicate the animated version a little bit too much.

Will Smith as the Genie is easily the best part of the movie. Despite not having a solid singing voice, but Smith's charm shines through and most importantly made the character his own. It's funny that the biggest complaint that everyone had turned out to be the best part of the movie, all because of an unfinished effect.

I think it had a very slow start, I got a little bored but when Will Smith's Genie came on the screen, I knew I was in for an amazing flik. Jasmine's voice is so pure and powerful but her strength comes in her vulnerability. She takes some of the issues of that time head on with perfect musical scenes. The Genie wasn't a vocal powerhouse and neither was Aladdin but their voices were good enough to get a pass. It was a very long movie (2 hours) but it still ended very quickly. This movie surely isn't perfect but with charming music and great acting, it's worth your time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A terrible script rewrite by someone that clearly did not understand nor respect the original. It's hard to list all the ways this movie failed. Whether it be how they completely rewrote a story that originally focused on love transcending status and wealth to to one that instead focuses more on female pursuit of power. Or how poorly the more cartoony characters like genie, Iago and Abu transitioned to live action. Or how they tried to randomly hip-hopify middle eastern culture. Or how abysmal their casting was for the villain. Or how they pointlessly created a tangential romance for the genie that contributes nothing to the story's themes, and comes at the cost of some of the best scenes like that of the merchant. Or how they would not even invest enough to recreate any of the scenes that would actually require a budget (like the giant cobra). I could go on and on but needless to say as a remake it's a disaster. If all you want is a distraction for your kids for 2 hours, it may do the trick but if you are expecting anything more, you're in for a colossal disappointment. Expand

A lot of it feels like a reboot but plenty of the original stuff is still in there. The pacing though is completely off. The moment the movie starts the market it already feels like it has skipped something. Because it did - as the original didn't do it.

Some scenes were solved a bit better than the original but even if it was not important for the narration: What in the world were they thinking getting rid of Cobra Jafar? I think they tried to pay hommage to it because by the end they showed a living snake transforming into Jafar's new staff so that was kinda cool but you cannot just skip the final battle. The chase scene was pointless apart from "let's show them some action". How exactly did that scene work? Jafar already was established to be able to teleport people around making him an absolute idiot in that scene for not doing it. There really was no good reason to skip something as iconic as Cobra Jafar. I do mind that he was not an old menacing man but no Cobra Jafar was even worse, the actor was fine even if old Jafar would have been alot better for me. Jasmin was great even if her story was expanded and Aladdin and Genie were also fine. There was a really embarassing scene in the movie that was like "sort of different" in the old movie when Aladdinw as goofing around having problems to hold up his charade and this embarassing scene was kinda funny.

Still I would have done this movie very differently. And if they do Jafar's Return I hope they bring in Cobra Jafar for that.

Another year, another Disney remake.

They aren’t always bad, but they aren’t always good either. I haven’t seen them all, but I’d say The Jungle Book is probably the gold standard here, recreating and re-imagining the 78-minute animated flick into a thoroughly enjoyable and inventive adventure. Cinderella (yes, that existed) was definitely a by-the-numbers remake, though Lily James’ charming performance elevated it to a must-see. And the rest fall in line. Beauty and the Beast added nothing (though it had some magic) and I haven’t seen the Tim Burton remakes Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo (sorry, kinda).

Now we have Aladdin, directed by Guy Ritchie, surely a strange choice to direct a remake whose original is bursting with color, music, and light-heartedness. Ritchie’s best known movies are the heist movie Snatch, the Robert Downey Jr. led Sherlock Holmes and its inferior sequel, and the famous box-office bomb King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. None of them have any color, and though I am a fan of Downy as Sherlock, none of them are especially good. So how does Aladdin fair?

Not well, unfortunately. It’s more or less the same as the 1992 version without what made it so good. The original was a tight-paced 91-minute movie with Robin Williams at the height of his comedic powers and great visual effects for its time. But here the movie is stretched to a poorly-paced 128 minutes, without Robin Williams, and the visual effects aren’t up to snuff. We’ve come so far with the computer graphic imaging technology that gives reason for these remakes (showcased perfectly in The Jungle Book), but it’s evidently too much to hope for in Aladdin. The CGI of Genie looks weird, the magic carpet ride during “A Whole New World” (that song still slaps) looks like someone did it on photoshop, and the look of Rajah does not compare to Shere Khan.

Will Smith tried really hard to be the OG Genie, while adding a little Fresh Prince flair, but it was too much of an imitation: Robin Williams is untouchable here, and it didn’t work for me. Mena Massoud’s Aladdin was plainly fine, but it’s Naomi Scott’s performance as Jasmine that was a standout. She was the most natural and organic, giving her own performance as opposed to going through the motions of 1992’s version. Her new song was laaaame, though. (Here’s a better showcase of her talents from back her in Disney Channel days). The movie did have good choreography, and at least there is a lot of color, so props to Ritchie for going against type. After that though, the desert well runs dry.

I know I’m being harsh, but Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie, and I’ve seen it eleventy-six times. But some movies perhaps shouldn’t be remade, especially if they work better animated. Disney has obviously tapped into the zeitgeist of nostalgia and is printing money now. But it’s because we love these old movies, not because they are releasing something special now. Indeed, 2019’s Aladdin is void of magic, originality, and a good reason to exist. 2/5

Will smith as Genie did a good job without trying to recreate the Legendary Robin Williams Voice acting. But the Casting choice for Jafar was god Awful. Also The Movie was a little to long. In the First and Second ACTS i was on board but the 3rd ACT kind of lost me.
And being a Movie directed by Guy Ritchie i kind of missed his Style. There isn't anything what makes you realize "Yep, this man directed this Movie". I personally find this was a missed chance to let this Movie stand on his own two feets. A solid Movie but i wouldn't watch it a thousand times like the Original.

But if you can get passed that then you might enjoy this. There are good things to this movie like for example the songs are pretty good (not better then the original movie but still) the comedy well not being as good as the original is still great but I love how the added and changed things so it's not all the same but not so different so you could make this remake about anything eles.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aladdin was my favorite Disney growing up, this live version was beautifully done. Great cast, great chemistry. Chemistry between Aladdin and Princess Jasmine is electric, you sense the great love connection between the two as they stare and gazed upon one another. As well as the chemistry between Aladdin and the Genie; explosive. The classic songs from the original revamped and well performed. Will Smith paid homage to Robin Williams take on the Genie and added his flavor to it but didn’t tarnish Williams’ version. The new addition song in the live version speechless was passionately and amazingly performed by Naomi Scott which left me “speechless” at the end of her performance. Loved how strong and independent Jasmine is in this version and how Aladdin has got a little swagger to him. Overall an adventurous, fun, funny and entertaining film. Guy Ritchie did an amazing job directing this film. Was concerned when I heard he was to direct this film because his previous films were very different and almost the opposite of this type of genre but well done Guy Ritchie well done. Expand

Sure, some of the special effects feel a bit wonky, but the return of Alan Menken, along with the writing team behind The Greatest Showman, delivers new materials that are great. The cast is perfect: but the stand out is Naomi Scott as Jasmine, what a star making turn. As per usual, it is a 'remake' so scenes are lifted directly from their animated counterpart, some with limited success. But for the most part, the film works very well. Expand

First Will Smith I am calling him Will Smith because that's what he is. He is as charismatic as usual but he is not playing a character he is playing himself. Aladdin is blend and lacks the personality of his cartoon counterpart, not a lot to say about this one. Jafar is miscast. He is not menacing or sleazy he is just there because someone had to be. Iago is waster. And Jasmine is no longer looking for true love she wants to be in charge. The song numbers are ok for what this movie is. In general the movie is a major let down. Aladdin is not the hero of his own story he is a side character. The movie is about Jasmine and her "rise to power". I say that because her motivations are changed to apparently reflect current year (2019). If they wanted to make a movie about her that's fine but why not go with a new take on it instead of changing the story. It worked for Maleficent why not do a movie called Jasmine and just run with it.
TLTR: If you are nostalgic for Aladdin just revisit the 1992 Disney classic.

The main characters performance, Aladdin and Jasmine, captured the escence of the originals . As for the genie, don't expect him to be the Robin Williams version of course, it is just not possible. Yet, Will Smith as the genie turned out to be realy good, adding his prince of belair persona to the character and the songs, which to my surprise worked pretty well. The real problem with the movie is Jafar, which is the only reason why I don't give it a 10. He lacks the evil, threatening villain traits of the original, that creppy lust he had for Jasmine and his hilarious relation with Iago. At least, the casting crew should have chosen a much taller, older and not hot actor. Still, watching the movie is a great experience, if you liked the original you'll enjoy the live-action version. Movie was atrocious in terms of comedy or tension and had uneven production value.

I haven't laughed once (maybe smiled a few times thanks to Iago, Abu and Carpet) neither cared for any of the characters.

Will Smith jumping around as a disappointing Genie in a very questionable CGI blue form so jarring to the eye mumbling cringey nonsense for 5 year olds
The "Friend like me" scene felt like it was missing the grandeur and excitement of the original. Aladdin and Jasmine bursting into song seemed kinda forced but at least the songs themselves were nice renditions of the originals.

Jaffar's pathetic voice and actions made me roll my eyes several time.

Hakim and Sultan were quite boring (they looked like they came out of a cheesy Turkish soap opera) serving as dull pawns in Jaffar's mind games.

It tells a lot on the level of your writing, when your best characters are the non-human ones.

Finale was anti climatic and even more cringey.

To be honest, I watched this movie because my family wanted me to join them, but I should've trusted my gut about this and just waited to Lion King (I trust Favreau a lot more than Ritchie).

The difference between this and, say, this year's "Dumbo" for example, is the sheer amount of iconography to transcribe from animation to live-action in either film. But that's about it. Like "Dumbo," the new elements introduced here are either horrifically ideated or just flat-out dull. Yes, Will Smith is trying. Yes, the visuals are palatable. There's just simply not much else here. Expand

It’s like an addition, Beauty and the Beast was fine but it was still just a shot for shot remake, Dumbo was not fine and it was somehow worse than a shot for shot remake and now the Disney remake parade continues with yet another classic Aladdin. Remaking a movie into live action almost shot for shot, what is the point? I mean I know its Disney and it’s for kids and all that jazz but honestly is it too much to ask for something a little less PG. What has it added? Nothing, sure it looks pretty, the costumes and the set pieces are fantastic but it’s not better, it’s nowhere near better. Re-release the original animation for the kiddies and remake something a little different for everyone else and not just a bunch of fluff. Aladdin 2019 is painful, specifically the singing, the singing is a cringe inducing auto-tuned, failed attempt to recreate something magical.

I’m just going to go ahead and presume you’ve all seen the original animated version, it’s the same story again only more dragged out. The lovable street rat Aladdin (Mena Massoud) finds a magic lamp containing a Genie (Will Smith) and cue wishes, songs and a magic carpet. Also featuring Jasmine (Naomi Scott) who not only has more lines but her own song too yey! And Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) who I’m sorry is so bland he manages to be upstaged by a CGI carpet. Aladdin should not have been remade, the result is bland and unnecessary. That isn’t just because of Robin Williams although that is a major part of it. Williams as the Genie is a universally loved performance, it’s iconic and it’s hilarious so Will Smith had some big shoes to fill. Is he terrible? No, he’s honestly the best thing about this remake. He put his own stamp on it and does his very best to add comedy as much as he can. It doesn’t always work but he’s trying his best. He certainly looks like he’s having a good time and I can’t really say that about anyone else.

There’s only one way to stop this laziness of Disney remaking their entire back catalogue because it must be too much trouble to pick up a book and make something original for a change. I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again if we stop seeing them they’ll stop making them yet Dumbo is still in the box office top ten and why should Aladdin be any different? I know a losing battle when I see one. Aladdin is going to dominate for the next few weeks because a film aimed at children and suitable for all ages will always make its money back and then some. Recommended for the die-hard Disney fans or anyone wanting to entertain their kids for a couple of hours for everyone else Aladdin is a definite skippable movie.

The musical numbers for the most part are good minus a few poor decisions for where to put them. Will Smith does great as a genie in his own right, and the actors for Aladdin and Jasmine were well chosen. I biggest gripe with the movie is Jafar. In the cartoon movie, Jafar is a vizier who is driven by not only his own selfish desire for power, but also by the infuriating awareness that he is under the command off an incompetent leader. I'm sure this at the very least was something that many could relate to, as Jafar was clearly capable of leading, and extremely effective in his ways, albeit they were evil. But in this new movie, the Sultan is not an incompetent buffoon, and Jafar is not an older magistrate who exudes an aura of danger, knowledge, and evil. The sultan is quite capable, and Jafar is more akin to a young statesman who desperately wishes to rise above his station. In the end this does not feel like Jafar because what he is stated to be, and what he is shown and written as do not match.

The movie is ok, but don't get your hopes up too much.

Has amusing elements, but overall it is kind of a mess. Not wild about the new ending. Not wild about the cultural changes. I know it is hard to make a live-action remake of a beloved animated classic, but maybe you shouldn't do that anyway.

There’s an upcoming Disney live-action movie as well and that would be The Lion King (2019). Most live-action Disney movies can never get better than the animated one and Aladdin’s one of them. First, the acting is kinda weak and bland. We had Mena Massoud as Aladdin. I know he tried really hard to be like Aladdin in the 1992 animated version. There’s also Will Smith as the Genie which was criticized online to be too blue but I didn’t think like that. In my opinion, he was pretty okay and funny as well, even though he couldn’t smash the role like Robin Williams. However, Naomi Scott stole the show as Princess Jasmine. She smashed it for a bit and I was kinda impressed as I said the performances were weak. Though the WORST in here was Jafar played by Marwan Kenzari. His voice was young and friendly, he wasn’t that evil but to be quite idotic and crazy and I had no favour for his roles. Yes, the movie was really entertaining with awesome magical special effects, Will Smith’s humor and more but each of those had problems as well as the musical. They didn’t lack any, but they made the musical more boring, more forgettable and less exciting. The music got lower and the creators got lazier and lazier. They also made the final battle worse. It didn’t take long and it was totally bright. Brightness here and there. Comparing to the animated version, it was totally dark and that’s how the final battle should be. Instead in this live-action, it didn’t take that long and people in Agrabah were like “look at my tricks here, see what I can do!”. They didn’t even pay attention that Jafar’s the ruler, not the Sultan. When Jafar turned into a Genie, he looked like a moron more than a powerful being. His face and hair, it was horrible. They also had new stuffs added to the movie. They were weird and annoying, also new characters as well like Dalia played by Nasim Pedrad. I didn’t see that character in animated Aladdin. She was okay to be added to make the movie funnier but the other new things are unnecessary. It made the movie boring and also took a bit long time and it was 128 minutes comparing to the 92 minutes of the animated Aladdin and it was almost perfect and almost the best Disney animated movie ever made. Personally the movie was kinda disappointing and didn’t live up to the hype. I could barely praise many parts of Aladdin. I bet Disney fans and other types of audiences would like it but Aladdin surely deserved to be mixed from me. It’s just a bland live-action like others. This is definitely not a whole new world! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Yes, it cannot compare to the original animated movie with Robin Williams but Will Smith brought a whole new dimension to the Genie which I really liked. The story was a little stupid, with Jasmine actually becoming Sultan (I am all for feminism but this is just going too far) and Jafar was nerfed to make Jasmine look "stronger". If you ignore the token social justice tripe, the movie was enjoyable and brings back a lovely nostalgia of the amazing music brought to us by the 1992 animated marvel that we all fell in love with. It remains one of the stand-out turns in a career that had more true magic than anything the genie in this tragic and pointless waste of effort can even pretend to muster. At times, it seems that the only point for this film is to "update" the storytelling for our postmodernist times, which while meaning well, does more harm than good. Hollywood needs to accept that while some of its classic films may not match up to our culture's current counterbalancing efforts in terms of social justice and cultural sensitivity, their value as art often outweighs what are seen as anachronistic flaws. Sometimes, it's better to leave well enough alone. Expand

All of the actors did so well. Will Smith made a good Genie made it his own. i mean robin williams set the bar super high and who would want a shot for shot thing anyway?no one can copy Robin Williams, a legend The CGI actually wasn't bad. all of the music fits the pace of the movie. No one in theater i was in seemed dissapointed with the remake either and there were quite few other people. I think the character princess jasmine was given much more stronger role than the animated in terms of life goals, her costumes were so beautiful and colorful. i loved the sarcasm too not just her character but in few other characters that's what added to the humor. i would want to see it again but i most likely will buy on blu-ray/dvd when it does come out.i find so nice and interesting that most audiences loved it and rated higher scores than most critics on movie critic sites. Aladdin has one of the best stories so how could they mess this up... Well to start off, the actors, all of them, including Will Smith, absolutely suck. It was a very cringe-y movie. Guy Ritchie was a terrible choice for director. It had this weird fast forwarding and slow motion mixed into it. Oh and to make it worse Disney has to roll out the feminism agenda by making the women smart and wise and the prince courting Jasmine, an absolute moron. I figured they’d go the cocky arrogant route but no let’s make him stupid. Oh and they made him white with some terrible German accent because Allah forbid they make someone of color look dumb. This next bit is a tiny spoiler but not really. Jasmine wants to be Sultan. Ok cool. Women in Saudi Arabia just got the right to drive a car. That’s pushing it a little. Overall the original is much more charming and told the story better in less time. Expand
