If you are a parent you can't watch this and not identify with these parents. It kept me on the edge of my seat. All that being said there were some obvious plot holes. The score seemed intrusive rather than helping the story along. It is true there is no "story line" to really follow. It is simply about these people trying to survive. Rather than hurting the movie I felt it made it more honest. That is what life would be like if this were to happen. There could have been more about how the world came to be this way but a creative imagination fills in the hole there without too much effort. This was definitely a movie to be seen and experienced in a theater surrounded by people. Expand

Builds tension really good and for what it is it´s handled realistically, besides not going deep into the story and getting to the conclusion really quick its enjoyable and clearly states John Krasinski as more than just a good actor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the movie even though it didn't take the direction the trailer suggested. The first half focuses on setting the environment and characters, which I thought was interesting but not something I'd have watched throughout the complete film. The second half brings in drama and tension which makes the best part of the movie eventually. Overall an interesting concept, cinematic setup and great acting. I'd recommend this movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is ridiculous. There is no logic. It makes no sense. Peoples reactions are totally unrealistic. It feels like it has been made by some ultra-conservative pro-life fanboys. The story: Weird alien creatures roam the planet and eat people. But they are blind and can only orient by sound, which they can detect from far away. However they can not hear you breath or can not hear your heartbeat even if they are like right next to you. Also they have extremely sensitive hearing, but no-one in the world has figured out that one can distract them by noises. Only a deaf girl eventually figures it out, by accident and only at the end of the movie. The previous like two or so times the aliens got scared of her (of her loud hearing aid) she did not make the connection! How stupid does one need to be. It makes no sense. Then the whole thing with trying to save the stupid baby and risking everyone else's life in the process. Then the dad sacrificing his own life for no good reason is another stupid part (why not just run away at least, let the alien follow you). But he just stands there and screams until it eats him.

So near the waterfall they can't hear you, so why not put f-ing loudspeakers outside your house playing some birdsongs or whatever or water sound? Why not go to a house with stronger doors? Why everyone is dead, if you can simply shoot the aliens with a shotgun? It is not like in "alien" where the aliens are actually hard to kill. No. They are easy to kill. Just people give up before they try.......

And the award for most ridiculous movie I've ever seen goes to...... A Quiet Place. The main protagonists in the film were so f___ing stupid that I started rooting for the aliens halfway through. What are the positive reviewers smoking???

A Quiet Place is directed by John Krasinski and is really his first major release as a director. Yep, not only did Jim from The Office direct a horror/thriller, but he directed a fantastic horror/thriller. I was interested in this film when IA Quiet Place is directed by John Krasinski and is really his first major release as a director. Yep, not only did Jim from The Office direct a horror/thriller, but he directed a fantastic horror/thriller. I was interested in this film when I saw the first trailer. It was different than the typical horror films we see these days, and it was also interesting that it was directed by Krasinski, and starred him and his wife. Then, when the first reviews dropped from SXSW, my expectations skyrocketed and I got very excited about it. And I gotta say, it is now my favorite film of the year (so far). Story: One of the things I love about A Quiet Place is the subtle world building. I wasn't presented with some five minute narration describing how the world reached the state it is in and what the aliens are and how many people are left; I was thrown right into the world, and along the way I was given some backstory through newspaper clippings and notes taken by Krasinski's character. This also left me with a bit of room to speculate how exactly everything came to be. Anyway, the story is that essentially aliens have somehow invaded Earth, but they are blind and hunt anything that makes sound. So if humans are to survive, they must stay as quiet as they can. It isn't focused on the government trying to defeat the aliens, though, or about a group of humans trying to save humanity, it is just about a family that is trying to survive in the world the way it is. And of course, sh*t eventually hits the fan and the aliens come into play. I loved the story, but it wasn't really the story itself that made this film so enjoyable to me. The sound design was fantastic. This is a very quiet movie (shocker), but every sound that is made carries some significant weight. So much as dropping a fork on the ground could mean certain death. But that's not what made the film for me either, it was the tension that is present throughout the entire runtime. Every time it started to build up while I was watching it I bet my heart rate started to go up. Great stuff. Nonetheless, there are a few plot holes and things that can/will be questioned, but everything else makes up for that stuff.

Script: There's not a whole lot of dialogue in this film, but it's still impressive to write a film this good without using much dialogue. It's not easy to do, but they accomplished it here. Acting: Unsurprisingly, solid acting from everyone involved. It is always a bit concerning when kid actors have significant roles in a movie, but they killed it. Cinematography: I think that the sound design is really the standout when it comes to the technical stuff, but the cinematography was solid, although nothing that will blow your socks off. Overall: This is the best film of the year so far to me, not even a competition, but we still have two-thirds of the year left so I guess it does have a lot of competition coming up. If you like horror/thrillers that involve aliens...you'll be pretty satisfied with this one.

The performances are accomplished, with the near total lack of audible dialogue requiring both creative visualisation and necessitating nuanced performances. The creature design is sufficiently chilling, and the cinematography is polished, allowing for some astonishing moments where no one is breathing both on and off screen. Compelling and tightly paced, this is a film to watch with friends in a dark and quiet cinema. 8.11/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Quiet Place is possibly one of the best Horror Films of the decade and deserves the rating it is getting from the critics. John Krasinski has done a phenomenal job creating a film with such little dialogue yet using the effects of acting and extravagant camera techniques to create what Hitchcock called ‘Pure Cinema’. It is very rare that I see a trailer for an upcoming Horror movie and get excited, but after seeing the trailer for A Quiet Place, I was immediately intrigued. The concept seemed almost impossible to betray on screen for it contains so many flaws and yet again Krasinski managed to fill in the gaps that we as the audience wouldn’t of imagined to of been explained.
Firstly, those who ask why the family didn’t live beside the waterfall are honestly so inconsiderate. Why... why would you want to live in a waterfall for the rest of your life? That is no way to live. This isn’t the only inconsiderate point a few contain; The Baby, Food, basic noises e.g. coughs... If people were to use there common sense and take in the information given in the film they would know that it is completely possible to survive on that farm.
They have a stable diet of fish and vegetable due to the parents both having experience of living on a farm. The baby is not heard crying because the monsters are distracted via the fireworks, Others on earth may have found a solution to the problem but where killed before exposing it, There ARE other people alive (the other fires being lit and the Old Man screaming)
Besides the film covering up any plot holes, the acting is unbelievable. You can tell that the chemistry within the cast was perfect and the choice for each role was sublime. Noah Jupe was brilliant especially in the scene when the Old Man screams and his father is trying to keep him quiet. Jupe did a fantastic job with his facial expression and only added to what Pure Cinema is. As for Millicent Simmonds I don’t know where to begin. During the film you were able to sympathise with Simmonds character the most for when it went to her POV you felt as if you were in her position. Knowing that she can’t hear what is around her but being able to see the monster right behind her is terrifying. This with her imposing appearance to seem completely unaware of her surroundings was wonderful to see and should certainly be recognised. As for both John and Emma they were outstanding. Firstly for Emma in the birth scene and John in the scene towards the end of the film when he sacrifices his life to save his children. This is certainly one of my favourite movies and I am more than happy to give it a 10

TheseThe story revolves around a family (of 4, after the youngest son died) being 'stuck' in a farm, where its general surrounding (and likely the entire rural country side area) is being roamed by three flesh eating aliens/monsters. These monsters are unique in that they are blind, but highly sensitive to loud sounds/noises, which they rely sorely on for hunting preys. The first early part of the film has slight problem on the pacing. Things start to get tense when the family members in the film got separated, and subjected to traumatic, life threatening attacks by the monsters, after an accidental loud noise in the house attracted them directly to the farm. Other than the horror aspect, the family love/bonding aspect is reflected very strongly, and brought out in an emotional, though sad way.

This is an above average horror movie you should consider watching, even if you are not a fan of horror films.

By the way, I read some of the negative reviews, which are mostly complaints about illogical parts in the film. Seriously, it is impossible to make a 'good' horror film if the film maker has to to be logical to the dot. Horror and science fiction is about make-believe made into a story. In fact, if every film is subjected to high level scientific scrutiny in the logical aspect, almost all films (especially horror and sci-fic genre) will be **** If the film never mention about any logic aspect of any plots or ideas in the film, it is either meant to be unknown or open-ended. If you want the proper answer, ASK the director or screen writer. If you want logic based video productions, go watch science documentaries. Do not consider watching any horror/sci fic films, since they will all seem illogical to you. And if this movie is a bad horror film, then what is a good horror film? Name any title that qualifies that. lol

One of the dumbest movies ever, didn't scare or make me suspend my disbelief for a second. THAT's unforgivable. Can't understand how critics and/or regular movie goers gave this a pass. Amateur hour for John K. as director. Film school fare. I didn't give it zero as it at least has a concept & a few mildly entertaining moments. But this is manipulative drivel. How can I make you jump nonsense. No spoilers, but there is no way modern military weapons wouldn't be able to handle this. These monsters are so easy to bait & they're just flesh & blood. In the end, ordinary stuff you have in your house is good enough to fix the problem. And as sound is their weakness, surely some science dude would have figured out a way to deal with this through sound waves...and that's just the start of my rant! Monsters with hearing this keen could hear anything, a heartbeat, breathing etc. And yet, somehow human survivors live on a farm with fields of corn? How were those planted soundlessly? Does the director have any concept of what it takes to plant a big field of corn? And were does the electricity come from for all the other gizmos these folks have? Modern technology in abundance (oxygen tanks, surveillance etc.) but the guy has to make a fishing trap with twigs? They have running water but never go into the bathroom to run a shower so they can talk?
I can put all those plot holes aside & still rant! The worst is that there is a big hazard on the stairs that no one notices ...? But even after someone does notice, no one does anything about it! These people are unsympathetic morons! Get a pair of pliers, or cover it with a coffee cup, anything to fix it! Then when the daughter goes off into a world filled with monsters, the mother doesn't even notice until many hours later ... then, indifferently wonders, where is that kid? She barely reacts. Geesh! Emily Blunt's acting is atrocious but the melodramatic situations demand her blood, sweat & tears. She just chews up the scenery -- the kids aren't any better. Grrr, I should give this zero, but I didn't walk out...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Of course not a flawless movie, but a movie absolutely worth watching. I never thought I'd be able to be so invested in characters I knew so little about. You never even get told anyones name, but you develop a liking for everyone. The quietness of the movie makes it much easier for the scares to get you it is also a very suspenseful film. I love all the little details about how they avoid making noise with things like the board game that they knit their own pieces out of yarn to not make noise when they move them on the board or a yarn little spot to throw the dice on and the sand that they walk on barefoot to avoid making a lot of noise it's wonderful. There's some plot holes like why the hell you'd have a baby in this situation, but whatever. They had a plan for it that ends up working. This movie is also able to pull at your heart strings with the fathers death, the whole movie the death daughter feels distanced and feels like her parents blame her for her youngest brothers death(even though it was her fault kinda) there is even a scene where the boy tells his father he should tell her he loves her more, but as one of the monsters is near he attempts to protect them with an axe, but is swiped away by the monster, the boy screams for his father which sets off the monster in his direction, they hide in a truck as the monster is trying to get inside the father makes his way up to his feet and drops the axe on the ground. The monster looks in his direction uncertain of what to do, his death daughter looks at him through the windshield as he signs to her "I love you. I always loved you." afterwards he lets out a scream that causes the monster to go for him this time killing him. That scene, brought me so close to tears about the death of a character that I knew so little about because I had seen how much his children meant to him, I was seeing the lengths he was willing to go to for their safety and the emotion as he signed to her was just so real. I absolutely loved this movie, but it has its flaws. 8/10. Expand

An incredibly detailed story that focuses on family relations. You may think you have a plot hole in the movie, but read the newspapers and remember the days! They list every reason why your "plot hole" is wrong. What may be bad about the movie is the massive amount of unnecessary jump scares, but it adds to the theme of A Quiet Place. Other than fabulous acting by the Millicent Simmonds, the best thing about the movie is sound direction. Each character has their own version of hearing everything and every time the camera moves to them, you will hear what they hear. You know each character's roles and how they feel in every situation. There is a screen which shows a death and a suicide, which may deter you and probably the only confusing part of the movie (anyone may comment on it here if they have a better explanation) - the only value it would add is the importance of family and how losing your loved ones can effect you. The conclusion was very well though-out because it was a random chance, not something scientifically articulated.

A room with more than 100 seats and only 4 other people in there with me and most importantly all them in complete silence.

Speaking about the film I think the noise and hype that is causing is somewhat excessive but I must give credit to John Krasinski for being his first film as a director because he delivers a solid film of horror and suspense that even though makes some argumentative mistakes like bringing a baby to the world when the world is now a **** up place, its narrative method works very well especially to immerse you inside the story and get people to pay full attention. After all if they don't have words they have the images and that is enough for this film.

Quite commendable because thanks to its way of telling its story it reminds the public how a movie should be enjoyed: In complete silence.

The film never fails to build up the tension, and the suspense, keeping you on the edge of your seat, and it concludes so epically (before you know it, the credits will start to roll), with so many open questions. Of course, Krasinki's direction is so masterful that it's hard to believe it's his first, and the performances from the whole cast (especially Emily Blunt's exceptional take on the role) are excellent. Thanks to John Krasinski (who directed and costars with his wife Emily Blunt), this is an intelligent suspense film. There are no cheap jump scares or bloody violence, just a steady nerve-racking level of anxiety that keeps building. Much of this credit goes to Krasiniski, who not only knows how to masterfully create tension, but has coaxed exceptional performances from the cast. They're not just good at being scared, but can truly convey true emotions. This is exceptional storytelling that's quietly riveting. Expand

Although i hate how the whole family blames themselves for the kid dying in the start even though really it was both his fault an the daughters for getting himself killed. There was this one bit with the newspapers an one of them said that everyone there where literally on there own which i found laughable. Also that ending was weird an cheesy. They find out how to kill the monsters which was all in good but that last bit kinda set it up to have a sequel but not really. I don't know why they didn't think that maybe the one they could do was there one weakness but hey i guess its not like a lethal idea. That scene were the lantern breaks an the monster comes,i don't know how the lantern breaks especially because her arm wasn't really near it. 1: if the monsters can hear so well they must hear them breath or heart beat
2: why not live by the waterfall
3: in one and half year they built one sound professionally place
4: no one managed to figure out the high frequency weakness?
5: so a flimsy shot gun managed to take one down and the might of USA military couldn't?
6: why not flood the whole area with death metal music?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a great example of modern Hollywood. The base idea for this story is nothing new or special. But they use a gimmick to create an entire movie. They milk this gimmick for an entire hour before they start to slack off. Had they done the entire movie without speaking it may have been interesting just for that gimmick alone. As it is they decide that they have to tell you stuff instead of showing it to you. In a movie where they can't talk...

But lets get to the meat of this argument. The movie was written and directed without any critical thinking. To the point where their story concepts were strung together half haphazardly, and no thought was given to their repercussion and how it would obviously affect the narrative. The monster is unintelligent and constantly makes clicking sounds. This strongly implies that it uses echo location. I don't care if the writers, directors, or producers all say that they don't have echo location. They demonstrated it as being a characteristic of the monster. But their story completely ignores it and even implies that the creatures don't have any echo location. They repeatedly show a newspaper clipping that shows a soldier at point blank range with a monster. The clipping has a headline saying that they are invulnerable. But a shotgun blast at close range can kill them in one hit. This is stupid. The monster is now just stupid. But my family says that the ultra sonic sounds weakened them first! We already use ultra sonic weapons now!

All of the characters made stupid choices in silly and convoluted situations. No one responsible ever stopped to think about how to create a situation that fostered a suspension of disbelief. It was obvious that they didn't bother to think about how a situation could plausibly occur that would allow them to include story elements that they used. The entire movie suffered for it. This was a movie all about cheap jump scares with little else to tie them together. It wasn't scary, the monster wasn't frightening, and the situation was a joke. There were some neat ideas and the gimmick could have been interesting. Instead they wasted some good actors with mediocre writing.

This is for a variety of reasons. I find most horror movies to have paper thin premises, unbelievable characters, and cheap thrills which don’t have lasting psychological impact. A Quiet Place unfortunately does not break any of these tropes. It is, however, an undeniably well-crafted film that comes extremely close.

The best part of the movie is its novel premise. The premise mostly works, but underneath, it does not get much deeper. There’s little to no subtext, few themes, and it becomes tiring by the end of the film’s brief runtime. It’s like a theme park ride. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But it doesn’t stick with you. I saw the film with friends and went out to dinner afterwards. About 30 mins into dinner we started talking about the movie, which is when I realized I completely forgot I saw it even though we left the theater maybe 45 minutes earlier. There are memorable images, yes, but little else of the film “stays with you.” It’s upsetting, but not disturbing. Scary, but not horrifying. Thrilling, but not invigorating. The characters, especially the daughter, act irrationally for little reason besides plot convenience. I have good suspension of disbelief, but I was rolling my eyes by the end of the movie, as the “rules” of the film and the monsters were eventually thrown to the wayside and constantly contradicting themselves. The rules are the most important part of a horror/thriller, but they all end up being mostly forgotten if not directly broken. Where this creates an opportunity for subversion, instead it becomes apparent the film is just messy. An unforgettable first half-hour begins to unwind, and especially by the end, you realize the film is like puzzle pieces strewn about the floor without being put together for a greater purpose.

John Krasinski is obviously talented as a filmmaker, and I’m excited to see what he creates next. But he is also still a novice, and this is made clear. The film feels like it is in a hurry. Even the best, most disturbing and emotionally resonant scenes aren’t allowed to truly breathe and sink in before we are rushed to the next set piece. This makes for a breezy, brisk experience but one which never truly unsettles you. As a result, the impact is strong, but not lasting (if that makes sense). Again, there are few themes. The film isn’t really “about” anything at all. The characters are well-acted and while their motivations are clear, they aren’t believable. The emotional core of the film is the daughter’s struggle to accept her father’s love. She thinks he doesn’t love her, which is weird because at no point in the film does he ever demonstrate that he doesn’t love her unconditionally. In fact, he frequently goes out of his way to show her this. But she rejects it again and again. Why? I don’t know. Because she’s mad at him I guess. Why? Because he asks her to help out her mom one time. This is what I mean when I say the characters aren’t deep. Any further exploration reveals that they don’t really have a lot to say, and their feelings are mostly convenient for cheap storytelling.

While the premise is great, any scrutiny causes it to fall apart. That all being said, nobody asked Krasinski to make a masterpiece. It’s a fun popcorn movie, no more and no less. It’s a fast watch, and while I still contend that it doesn’t have lasting impact, the impact in the moment is still fun. What I’m trying to say is the screenplay is weak but everything else is handled mostly admirably. And who doesn’t love original blockbusters? Overall, I think most people would enjoy this film. Just don’t expect it to be a masterpiece, because it’s not. It is however pretty decent and miles better than most of the other horror movie dreck in theaters these days. I have a feeling Krasinski’s next film is going to be significantly better. He shows a lot of promise, but it’s definitely still at the beginning. Go buy a ticket to encourage him to make more movies, and to encourage studios to pick up original works.

The characters did placed something that it seemed to be salt, or something, in the paths that they needed to use for then, it doesn't make any sound by the steps. The kids playing a board game, using cotton as their game pieces, throwing dice at the carpet. Using sign language, it's incredible how even the kids knew how to use the system, like the parents probably taugh them since they were little children. The movie also showed how the family were self sufficient, how they get their food, in the river, or with planting and showing a place full of corn, and that they usually go to the city to take some supplies.
Delivering problems and bigger situations than the plot itself, like Emily characters is preagnant, throughout the movie you keep asking yourself, how in hell she will get a baby without warning the monsters and the movie delivery it with mastery. One of the kids is deaf and the father try to make a device for her to star listening and foward on the story it does have a bigger purpose, isn't their just for be, everything does have a meaning in the story. And they also did show how they could warn when some monster was close without making one sound, they literally though in everything. The characters cannot make a sound, but the script put them in the most impossible situations to not make a sound as possible, it is sadistic. The atmosphere and the sound of this movie are just amazing, like every minumum sound you can hear and be afraid that if it was to loud, the sound design for this one is fabulous.
It is scary and terrifying in some moments, the movie have a prologue that just show us perfectly without one word how the movie will be, it does gave to us that sensation of danger that can be reached with a simple error, making a minimum noise, it does this perfectly, you got tense during the movie, any sound that they do, you got paralyzed and scared of what might happen. Every single sequence with the monsters were phenomenal, they are scary and dangerous, because they can't see it does make it so much more intense, it did reminded me a little bit of The Last of Us and Until Dawn.
All the actors did a tremendously good job. Emily Blunt in general did a great job, but are some sequences that i won't mention because it is spoiler, but in some particular moment that she is hurt with her baby and is passing for a big struggle, she can pass the perfect idea of despair and fear, her face and full composition of body delivery it perfectly, she is holding emotions. John Krasinski also did a great job, he have a expression of concern that i completely bought it, he can express the idea of love and that he is trying to do the best for his family, he also is the director, wich did a phenomenal job at it. Millicent Simmonds character is actually deaf, just like the actress, and she did a great job in expressing her rebellion in some situations, her concerning with his brother and a possible blaming herself moment. Noah Jupe wich is the other son of the couple, he is very good, doensn't have much to do as the others, but he does express perfectly his fear and his trust on his father, he is concern and did a very good job.
It is somethings in the movie that was bad and didn't make sense at all, there is one sequence with Emily in a situation, a situation that is important and you got curious about what is going to happen, then the scene is cutted for another thing, and when it does come back to Emily the role situation is gone like nothing did happened, that seemed like a continuation failure on the movie. Later on the movie are two situations that i didn't though that was righ, with the boy. The cgi and design of the monsters was great, they are scary and completely pass that dangerous and disturbing sense, every time that they showed you got stunned by them, they are completely ferocious and super violent, you understand how they are and wich are their abbilities, the movie did it in a great way.
The cinematography is great, like if you are not hearing much, your vision gets more sharpened, every cam is creative, they put a lot of empty places at the scene, for us to get scary and tense if the monster will show up, the characters are put against light to make us concentrate more in the background, and when the monster is on screen it does change to a more close one for us to not know where is it. There is one color thing that when it is showed the red, the dangerousity sense goes so high that i can't even remember when i got that feeling before.
The end of the movie with some new knowledge gained during the film, make the end being the best possible, getting implicit what is going to happen and letting the viewer thinking how did it go.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Praise from the critics, 8.2 on IMDb, did I watch the correct movie?

A Quiet Place is one of the dumbest and most boring flicks I have ever seen. For a movie that positions itself as a horror title it has zero suspense and scary moments. The only scary thing about is is how people seem to praise it despite it being unoriginal dull garbage.

With the premise being "humans are hunted by blind monsters that react to loud noises", this basically becomes "Screamer, the movie", as this is the only trick that Krasinski offers - everything is silent, and sharp noises occur occasionally.

There is no plot in a Quiet Place. A moronic family just goes about their business and cannot muster some sort of a sound-proof room to be able to talk in, instead they use the sign language and go to a waterfall to scream. Yeah, I didn't make that up, the writers did. They do have a basement which they cover with a mattress and it seems to help, but for whatever reason they don't do it regularly. Also, in the beginning act the parents lose their youngest child whom they failed to teach properly that if he makes sounds he will die. What do they do after his death? Well they go ahead and make a new one! And then they put the baby in a coffin to muffle its cooing!

What else is there? Krasinski, apparently, has a foot fetish, as shots of naked feet occur every 5 minutes or so. The mute plump girl needs 3 damn occasions to understand that her hearing aid drives the monsters back. The film lasts an hour and a half, but most of the scenes are either too long or unnecessary at all. (Like with the old man in the woods.) The family survives for around a year, yet the father still can't properly hunt fish, he just grabs it with bare hands and it slips away, genius. The monsters are described as "indestructible" in the newspapers, yet they die from a single shotgun headshot. This is just what I remember off the bat, a Quiet Place offers even more idiotic character actions and dull predictable scenes.

Apparently this is John Krasinski's directorial debut. Well, at least he shouldn't have trouble improving on himself later with the bar set so low.

Despite a few minor plot holes, the story is solid, inventive and skillfully executed, making stunning use of elements -- like sound and sound editing -- that typically don't get to play center stage in a film's finished product. What's more, the picture's richly layered narrative is deftly punctuated with symbolism that carries deeper meanings, a quality rarely, if ever, seen in releases in this genre. Nevertheless, they navigate freely through trees, etc. 2. If humanity wanted to survive, couldn’t they have just sent out protective earmuffs to humanity, some instructions to soundproof their homes, and then ruined the aliens’ hearing with loud noises? Also, apparently a shotgun works. 3. I’m sorry, but after the boy dies in the beginning, there is no way that those parents are having sex in the near future. Yet, they do. Soon, they’re pregnant again. The world seems like a great place to raise a baby, doesn’t it? Stupid/non believable characters abound in this film. 4: The aliens are stupid. I feel sorry for them. The movie ends with a ridiculous assumption, and no more. Are these aliens? What year is it? How they got there? Why not even make an effort of adding more essence to the story than barely the main characters? Why the father in the story could find all kinds of provisions and medicine but not birth control? This movie is really not what everyone raves about, and instead is truly a waste of time. I did appreciate the acting though... So it definitely deserves points for that.... For that alone. Wow! I went into the movie with modest expectation due to the rotten tomato score, and left pretty confused. The beginning of the movie hooked me since I liked seeing the post-apocalyptic atmosphere, but from there it slowly became less interesting. Most people criticize the plot and unrealistic actions, but I didn't really mind. I was only bothered by the lack of story and development, or rather how it wasn't scary to me at all. With a slow story and lots of predictability, it felt like there wasn't much to pay attention to on screen other than the alien. There wasn't any build up or goal throughout the movie, and if there was, it wasn't resolved or made clear. The acting and sound was obviously great, but with editing aside, this movie is really only successful in it's portrayal of a silent world. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is no doubt that Krasinsky can direct but this film was laughable at its very premise and that's a fatal flaw that it never recovered from for me and my girlfriend, who chortled through the whole movie. While the acting and direction were quite good and the writing was clever, in its mechanics and use of devices, the basic conceit of the film is too much of an obstacle and it is betrayed by the ending in a massive way. If these creatures are so indestructible, how come a lady who just gave birth and has a nail wound in her foot can destroy one with a single shotgun shell? How can a ten year old figure out that the Achilles heel of the species is that their hearing is so sensitive they can be defeated with feedback? Our armed forces have been using sonic weaponry for years and no one but this girl could have figured out that the greatest threat to mankind could be defeated with an annoying high pitched noise? A National Guard troop could not clear an area of these things inside of a week with just the guns and ammo they have in a supply wherehouse? It was completely preposterous. While Rod Serling could have made a horribly flawed premise like this work for a half an hour without much of a problem, it would not have been a very good episode by "Twilight Zone" standards. So, while Krasinsky did an admirable job directing, the acting was stellar and the writers were mechanically clever, the basic premise of the film simply doesn't survive the suspension of disbelief test. Most of the movie is really slow and awkwardly silent, but it's all part of the build up of the story. I can't say I fully enjoyed it, but it's definitely something new and interesting to watch. In this short little movie, you linger on a family of four’s attempts to stay mute so three carnivorous noise-hungry creatures in the area can’t find them.

You never get a good glance at the eyeless creatures other than some scary venom teeth and the fact that they crawl on all four like spiders. Thus, in the silence that these creatures scare the public into, anything that is heard simply BOOMs, almost a jump-scare in impact. Yet mom and dad still manage to find A Quiet Place where they can dance to earbud music together while he caresses her baby bump, allowing a brief piece of safe familiarity.

The hush living quarters the family lives in makes even paper ruffles more fearsome inside each of their individual perspectives: I likewise felt afraid to move even slightly in my theater seat while watching. The details that make up the family’s predicament screams mastery: food must be eaten off corn leaf plates and monopoly must be played using wool pieces, numerous scattered foreshadowing bits toy around your fearful anticipation in the process. It helps you to feel relieved once free speech is safely permitted around a thunderous waterfall, until you are set back in dangerous floods again set to attack.

Although the pregnant mother’s due date lands one day before a full moon, one of her first seen actions still conveys devotion in how she very carefully obtains her son’s meds, her ultimate realization of persistence’s importance sparking the evocative parental themes. The kids demonstrate themselves in persistence too, meeting us where we’re most sensitive, for we’ve all been a confused kid in a dark monstrous world before.

The father shows marriage’s power beyond personal dilemma whilst he searches after a cure for his daughter’s deafness, the constant dissatisfaction visualized with hot solar rays behind them in tension. Besides just casting his real-life wife, director John Krasinski (Lip Sync Battle) cast a deaf actress to portray the deaf daughter, resulting in authenticity of a seldom seen predicament: a deaf girl raised by hearing people who hope to change her. Alongside her brother, each eventually ascertain one another’s needs in the process of expressing a sibling’s commitment.

Thus, everyone has something different to zip behind secretive lips until you just want to throw a comforting wool blanket around each of them and sing a lullaby for their sanity. It makes you reconsider your own personal preconceptions upon communication to understand their unique intense love.

In pasting this complex piece together, John Krasinski’s efforts as director, star, co-writer, and co-executive producer each succeed to deafening applause! His on-screen performance stands out the most of his four efforts as a lack of a home glows in his softly paced eye motions. In the rare occasion he does speak, Krasinski breathes out a caressive necessity to desperately guard others. You often wonder when he’ll fall on his knees in self-ransom, fitting his final epiphany about the value in life or death.

However, not everything about Krasinski’s breakout project is perfect: the accompanying musical score contributes nothing for a film attempting no noise. The absence of music worked in No Country for Old Men, so think how much stronger it could turn out here! Plus, without fault on the producers’ affordability, cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen (Fences, Molly’s Game) creates too few claustrophobic closeups on these victims. A similar issue to exploit a limited financial plan results in poor CGI monsters.

But like Get Out, a low-budget Black nightmare, A Quiet Place is a low-budget White nightmare. A ghost town appropriately opens the piece, streets beneath amber leaves, buzzards inaudibly swooping above, straightaway establishing a setup of Whiteness comeuppance. Whiteness in this future may be the world’s sole race left, any attention erased toward the natives they took America away from. Thus, the 100% Caucasian cast must keep below a whisper—or else face immediate death by their childhood fears, until a hard truth hits that nobody truly owns the Earth.

Obviously though, you will most remember the nonstop thrills, which pile on top of each other until the information built up erupts into a powerful finale. Thank goodness that it’s still rather early into the year, and we already got an explosive instant classic to scream about!

The short review: This is a must-see super tense thriller that has great sound effects and sound editing, and great acting all around. There are a couple of plot holes, but the good parts cover these up.

Related media: There isn't any related book / TV series.

What's it like?: The inspiration for this film could be The Diary of Anne Frank. Other recent similar works including 2015’s Hidden. In this film, the alien hunters are highly perceptive of unnatural sounds (but cannot see well?!). The family of five hides in a farm and go about daily activities very quietly, but a series of events eventually draw the aliens to the farm for a final showdown.

Pros: 1) Sci-fi films need rules on what is feasible and what is not. This film stick to these rules consistently and the film thus works very well.

2) The sound effects and sound editing were done very well here. The sound comes on and goes silent at different times. It also portrays the difficulty deaf people have with their hearing devices. It is very quiet for most of the film and my fellow cinema-goers were actually very careful not to fiddle with their food packaging then, which is quite an achievement for a film. 3) Needless to say, this film is a super-tense thriller. Impending dangers are given time to build up thus making the experience for the viewers very tense. The last film I saw that was similarly tense was 2017’s Get Out and that was excellent too.

4) Emily Blunt's acting is good enough to win an Academy Award. No holocaust film required! Cons: 1) Sight is the most important sense for any species and is required for that species to dominate all others. It is unlikely that an alien species able to build spaceships to come to Earth have such poor eyesight. A caveat of this is that the aliens could merely be creatures dropped off from space by their more sense-able masters. 2) Even if the hunters could not see (well?) it doesn’t make sense for the family to highlight the farm that they live at by turning on all the lights at night and farming their corn in such neat rows. The aliens could have some spaceship or drones with sensors that can see such things.

3) No explanation was provided for why the farm had a steady supply of electricity. Most part of the film takes place more than a year after the aliens appear. Is the National Grid still operational or does the farm have a generator, which would be noisy though? 4) It is not possible to physically upturn a nail in the way shown in the film, but a greater issue here is that the film fails to incorporate this nail into the story, towards the end of the film.

5) Why would the father set up operational microphones and speakers at home when this could accidentally create unwanted sounds?

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: (This is too tense for children.)
Teens: Excellent
Young adults: Excellent
Medium age adults: Excellent
Old adults: Excellent

Rating: 5/5 (no half scores). Pay to watch it in the cinema and to buy the DVD.

The best thing about this film was the audience; not a peep out of them (bar the occasional gasp,) the entire running time. Good sound design didn't need the intrusively ominous score and if you've seen a film where someone clamps their hand over their mouth while a glistening spiky monster hisses and crackles past behind them, then you've seen this. The scariest thing in the movie is def a nail sticking out of a plank. Not so much a series of set-pieces as one set-piece played out ten times. Another five minutes and I would have become inpatient. Expand

But if it make you very nervous to the point of not eating popcorn at the cinema because you do not want to make noise.
On the other hand the aliens or creatures are very well put together with all the production.
I recommend it a lot, I give it 10 one of the best Drama and Horror movies for me after the Get Out movie.

I just wasn't particularly wowed by anything else here though. The premise, while executed well here, is nothing particularly novel (we've seen similar premises in films like "Don't Breathe" and "Hush"). And though the filmmaking here is undoubtedly effective, some of the usual horror movie pitfalls -- like an over-reliance on jump scares, for instance -- make an appearance. Again, I much enjoyed the film overall. It just didn't reinvent the wheel for me. Expand

* all people in the movie are walking bare-foot. What is this about ? no, I get this is for making less noise but - 1st you will not be able to walk for a long without shoes - 2nd you still make noise even if you are not wearing shoes. * nobody could figure out how to kill the creatures or what is their weakness (not scientists nor military specialists) , but a little deaf girl with a little help from her dad (he plays pretty good actually). * a monster can her you from a great distance (kilometres a believe) , but if you cover your secret place with a mattress it does the trick , REALLY ?! .. and so on so on

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't recommend someone watch this over any other film, horror or not. The acting is solid, the premise of the film is ok. The plot and actions are predictable, and only unpredictable when they make no logical sense. The film pacing is amateur. The cgi alien is ok but derivative. The suspension of disbelief is nonexistent. The whole film culminates in the last family in at least their region, maybe the world, just shooting the alien in the face (with a shotgun), after such an long build up, we get that? There was no reason to have the father in the film at all, kill him off early and the tough mum could have carried it to the end. But the whole end was they shoot it? This film would be difficult to watch in a noisy household, the cinema goers laughing (and eating loudly or farting) was bad enough. I was desperately hoping the alien or the whole family stood on the damn nail one by one. Honestly, I wondered if an hour of movie was edited out, and there was a lot more story and a different ending before the final cut. Look out for that version. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So this is a tough review, but I'll try to lay out why I've given it a low score (which is clearly not something most will agree with). Plot: The plot was the reason I wanted to see the movie in theaters. I heard great things, and I saw the memes about people being quiet in the theater, and surprisingly there were plenty of moments where you could make at least some noise to get comfortable or breath easily, like when music played or they were in a loud place. So the plot was fantastic, make the audience FEEL what it would be to be in the world through the silence. however...

Silence: This doesn't make a comfortable viewing experience. I wish the movie theater had spaced the chairs out, and given everyone headphones because holy crap was I uncomfortable with the silences and you could tell so was everyone else. If you see this movie, THE CHAIRS YOU SIT IN WILL BE VERY IMPORTANT. I spent more time focused on how uncomfortable I was than on the movie itself (I'll try not to rate the movie on that but it's partly the movies fault for well, being that good at bringing you into the world. There were moments where I couldn't breath, not because of the movie being scary or whatever, but because I didn't want to be an **** and ruin the experience for other people. So while im starving myself of air, all i can feel is the uncomfortable chair, and all i can hear is the **** munching popcorn loudly as **** behind me.

The trailer: If you saw the trailer, you saw the movie. There are only two other developments other than that: the father dying, and the hearing aid he fixed for his daughter being the secret weapon vs the monsters. That's basically it, the trailer sets you up for wondering if the mother will be killed along with her baby during the birth, but the solution to that was so easy. Emotional connection: I only felt connected to the mother who clearly cares for her children and husband, and does everything to protect them, to the father who sacrifices himself and has to basically fix every little mistake the kids make, and that's it.

DEAF **** Seriously, even in the post apocalyptic world where you literally have to be quiet or be eviscerated by a monster, this **** managed to get both her little brother killed and her father, through rebellious teenage angst. I have never read a story about some teenager in the roman empire rebelling against their father and idk, ending up getting them killed. I have never heard of a teenager in the UK during ww2 bombing rebelling against their father as the bombs dropped on their heads, getting their father killed. I have never heard of a kid, knowing full and well it is a life and death situation, being ****ing angsty, and rebelling against their parents, and getting them killed. So why the **** does this kid disobey her parents again and again and again and again and then finally gets them killed? She's a sociopath, a narcissist, doesn't care about anyone else but herself. I could not understand why they wrote her character this way, and it really ruined the movie for me. We're supposed to identify with her angst but holy **** what a ****ing **** If I had managed to get my father and brother killed, I would drown myself. She actually doesn't even seem to give a **** that her father loves her, or that he's hurting from the sons death, she only cares about her own feelings, and that's what ends up getting her father killed. What a selfish **** So I'm giving this movie a 3 for making me hate the outcome, really the wrong person died

Truth is, without the saving plot device of the hearing aid, this entire family would be killed so quickly without the father. He saves them over and over and over, there is absolutely no way they survive after his death.

Truth is the deaf girl should have died in the cornfield, should have died in the grain (as should he brother, and it was her fault) and should have died in the car, and then should have died in the house. Must be nice to have plot armor though

The creatures weakness is sound, and no one in the planet figured that out? I thought of using sound against them 30 seconds into the movie. Having a kid? guess no condoms in post apocalyptic world. People sink in the corno silo but not the monster, guess they have levitation powers. The monster ripped open the silo in seconds but cant tear open the truck, guess he was tired. They drove an old truck down a mountain but those sounds didn't attract the monster, really?????. The sound proof room is suddenly flooded, where is this water coming from? no river or pond close by, guess we have magic water in this movie. And the electricity, the have electric power which we have no idea the source of this power, maybe the have infinity stones o something. These are just a few of the plot holes, too many to list. I tried to enjoy this movie but it was just too too bad. Expand

I went with high expectations, based on so many stellar reviews. For me, the first half had little tension (not edge of my seat from beginning to end as I had read), though the calm quiet story building was well done. That said, once thingsI went with high expectations, based on so many stellar reviews. For me, the first half had little tension (not edge of my seat from beginning to end as I had read), though the calm quiet story building was well done. That said, once things ramped up, there was some major tension! I think I might have been gripping the seat arm rest at times. I've read others complaining against plot holes, but I'm not one to get critical like that. Taking the movie for what it is, it was intriguing and enjoyable. I have almost always avoided horror movies (I don't like the unnecessary cruelty, gratuitous violence and blood splashing) but I was very pleased with the restraint shown in the making of this film. As others have noted, it centered on a caring and intelligent family, and little gore was shown. I applaud the film makers for finding a great balance between creating stressful suspension, but not showing things that go over the top. I suppose the trend in horror films like most things is to go further than previous movies to still keep it shocking. Cool to see that it works to pull back and still make a very successful film! I already knew that the movie was getting excellent reviews, so my expectations were high for this movie, and I was shaking at the end of it. The movie is really tense and really (and surprisingly emotional) Some would argue that this is a suspenseful movie, but is actually a horror movie, but a lot of people wont se this movie like that because at this days were not used to this type of movie. The thing is that, the movie presents this family, and we care for them, and the things that they´re going through are really terrifying, so to us is terrifying as well. The performances are excellent, with the acting there is nothing more to say than incredible. Emily Blunt is the one that gives the best performance, but everyone is brilliant. Her husband (the director, co writer and star in the movie) proves that he is capable enough to take a project as interesting as this and not leave it just in interesting. The work that he does is fantastic, specially with the sound of the movie that is one of the main protagonist in the movie. I have two issues with the movie. The first is that, (this is not a spoiler) Emily Blunt´s character is pregnant, and that is not believable, not considering the situation that the characters are living, it´s true that the pregnancy stuff adds something to the movie, but still is not believable. And the second flaw that I found was the last twenty seconds of the movie. That is when you notice that the movie was produced by Michael Bay. At the end, A Quiet Place is one of the most intense and scary movies that I have seen, and I highly recommend this movie, I can say that the movie was an experience. And please, stay as quiet as possible in the movie, because it will not be the same if you're eating popcorn very loud, or if you're cellphone rings in the middle of the movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well directed and intense if you can buy into the rules of the movie. However, it unravels much in the way Signs did, which is a very similar movie, at the end regarding the creatures weakness. As a viewer we are expected to suspend disbelief that the whole world (and the world's militaries) are so stupid that they got overrun by aliens who can simply be destroyed by amplified higher frequency sound? Really? Realistically if this happened, the solution would have been found within 24 hours after observing the creatures are highly sensitive to sound and the military would have been able to target and destroy this foreign enemy with ease. Just saying it really drove down the score. It's hard to ignore and definitely takes me out of the world building realism the film tried to establish. Very high marks for most everything else though. Great acting, technical film aspects, pacing, tension, direction etc. Expand

An excellent film that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The acting is top-notch and the film makes clever use of sound, making jumpscares feel really well timed. Horror isn't going to get much better than this.

This is a great movie. Well written. Well acted. Great directing from a new director. At first I felt like there might have been a few minor plot holes but upon further thought there are decent explanations that aren't necessarily obvious. IThis is a great movie. Well written. Made an account just to give this piece of junk a review. Who are these people giving thumbs down to negative reviews here? Why does this movie have such high reviews from rotten tomatoes, Washington post, IMDb, Roger Ebert? Has the worldMade an account just to give this piece of junk a review. Who are these people giving thumbs down to negative reviews here? Why does this movie have such high reviews from rotten tomatoes, Washington post, IMDb, Roger Ebert? Has the world gone mad? The movie is slow. And when i say "slow," I mean very slow. The movie felt like a drag from beginning to end. Being a Michael Bay movie (I didnt know going into it), it lacks entertainment and action, let alone big explosions. The movie is mostly in sign language and the theater was so quiet that I could hear people farting. It might as well have been filmed in black and white. The movie lacked substance, plot, setting and acting was mediocre. Please dont waste your money, you have been WARNED. I would have given it a negative rating if I could. I await the thumbs down with PRIDE!!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Movie Goes NO-Where - but quietly. Plot is filled with gaps: where did alien invaders come from and why didn't the army shoot them? why have a baby in this world? why didn't the scientists at Harvard and MIT figure out how to get rid of them - when a 12 year old girl could? Good if you are a middle school kid, otherwise it's a big disappointment. Expand
