The universe they've created doesn't follow a set of logical rules and the characters are only half baked. I couldn't believe the family in this movie would survive a week in this apocalyptic world, let alone over a year. The actors did the best with what they could, but you can tell that the direction was lacking. Overall, it was enjoyable enough, but it mostly just felt like the monster chase scene from every horror movie ever stretched to a full movie length. Cool idea, but not the best execution. Expand

Krasinski is able to balance both directing and starring in the film rather well, but his ideas towards the story seemed a bit scattershot at times. In addition, I felt as though it became more and more predictable towards the end and the ending was quite a cop out to me. I will say however that the chemistry between Krasinski and his wife/costar Emily Blunt and the two children (Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe) was well-done. Overall, it really was an ambitious idea for a story, but it fell rather short of its potential in my opinion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The performances and much of the second half of the film makes up for the amount of illogical and pointless things that happen in the name of creating tension that actually don't do that at all. In the end it feels like a Doctor Who episode in as much as we're basically watching a character slowly work out something that has been mercilessly hammered into our skulls as an audience. That's what most of the movie is in the end. Split on rating this a 5 or 6 but I guess I'll be generous. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here's a quiz for you (spoilers? Maybe?): In what movie does (in no particular order) one of the parents die; aliens overrun the world; society can't figure out the blaringly-obvious way to defeat the aliens even though they're also affected by pretty mundane things, as it turns out; both kids have some sort of condition or quirk going on, and one of those quirks or conditions leads to the solution for defeating the aliens?

Ding ding ding: That's right- It's SIGNS, by M. Night Shyamalan!

Yes, A Quiet Place has some solid acting and solid direction, and cheers to allowing for an actual, hearing-impaired person to play a hearing-impaired person. It's a little scarier, but honestly also a little more dense in the way of the suspension of disbelief (you did NOT seriously just get away with having a baby right next to a sound boogen; no, the deaf girl is NOT going to be aware of all the sound she makes even just breathing, let alone walking through a CORNFIELD). Frankly, however, I prefer the symbolism, humor, character arcs, and storytelling that came with Signs. There was very little to absolutely none of that in A Quiet Place, which honestly made the theater quite a quiet place.

The best thing about this film was the audience; not a peep out of them (bar the occasional gasp,) the entire running time. Good sound design didn't need the intrusively ominous score and if you've seen a film where someone clamps their hand over their mouth while a glistening spiky monster hisses and crackles past behind them, then you've seen this. The scariest thing in the movie is def a nail sticking out of a plank. Not so much a series of set-pieces as one set-piece played out ten times. Another five minutes and I would have become inpatient. Expand

Plus its Jim right, what could go wrong?

The movie centres around a family who are trying to survive in a decimated post-apocalyptic world that has been overrun with monsters (aliens?) that have ultra-sensitive hearing. Simple premise, concise and to the point.

A lot of friends who saw this movie in theatres recommended this movie to me simply because they thought that critics had grossly overrated this film, so that was my mindset when I watched this. As stated before, I thought the premise of this movie was interesting, but the execution of the film was mixed for me. As many have mentioned before me, there are lot of plot holes and conveniences that occur in this film to keep it moving along. This movie builds the setting well and wastes no time showcasing the dangers of the creatures that preside over the world as it is. I liked that the movie was able to introduce the threat quickly and traumatically and building a deep sense of worry for the family we have yet to become fully acquainted with. These kinds of introductions hit hard and let you know what you're in for. Unfortunately, it gets worse and worse from there.

I am sorry to say that outside of Emily & John's characters, there is no believability for the writing of the other characters, as in the children. The thing is, there cannot be that much writing to begin with, as most of the movie does not have actual person to person dialogue. It is not that the other actors are children and have little acting experience to speak of, it is simply that they were designed to conveniently cause every problem and raise tension out of sheer stupidity. Normally, you could also attribute this to youth experience, but when you put "Day 472" on the screen, that leads me to believe that these 2 kids have had almost a year and a half of experience in dealing with this world and its dangers, yet every single decision they make moving forward is absolutely asinine and contradicts their experience level completely.

On top of this, the conveniences to raise tension... Why on earth would you ever consider having a newborn baby in a world where you must be absolutely silent to survive? While this lead to one of the better scenes in the movie, where Emily's character has absolutely everything go wrong with her at once and has to work out of a terrible situation, it simply does not make any sense for them to do this, it is essentially a death sentence for the sake of plot tension. You can make soundproof rooms for the purposes of having a baby, but you can't do that to have a proper safe zone where accidental noise won't lead to immediate death... Research and newspaper clippings show that being underground is an exceptionally smart idea, but a normal farmhouse is where you decide to sleep, no fallout shelters in the middle of what looks like "flyover states" and their woodlands? Last resort weapon is a shotgun, but didn't think to find an assault rifle or handgun from the militarized safe zones with a silencer? Or at least look into how to design one? Those are just a few examples and I do not want to flood the whole review with them, but there are just too many to mention, so I can understand the reviews that delve into the red zone (0-3 rating).

+ Good premise
+ Excellent world building
+ Some good scenes of tension, regardless of contrived setup
+ Liked the design of the monsters
+ Emily Blunt & John Krasinski were great for the most part

- Contrived plot and over the top conveniences
- Over reliance on soundtrack
- Over reliance on CGI for monsters
- Unbelievable characters for both the son and daughter
- Poor writing and execution
- The ending sequence/scene was cringe-worthy

Overall, this film had an excellent and promising premise, but failed in execution and writing as there were way too many conveniences and plot holes to make the storyline believable. This movie is a 45 for me, and I think some of these critics should seriously re-evaluate how they score these types of films.

Monster design is kinda cool too.

The logic falls down in the back third for me, not just because of the many plot conveniences, but because things are not consistent. I don't want to spoil but it's a combination of the threat being over and the participants making it much worse for no good reason. The kids are unbelievably frustrating with their decision making even though they've been living in the world for over a year and appear to have the basics down pat. The end is Spielberg level absurdity, done badly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie builds up the tension well. It's a bit hard to believe that the people surviving the invasion of these monsters would actually be so effing stupid, but hey if they had any smarts at all there would be no need for a sequel in which they wipe out the monsters. When you start to think about it, a whole lot of things just don't add up in this story. Stupid, stupid people. The monsters only react to sound, no smell, no sight, kill only to kill, not to eat. How the hell did they survive and how did they manage to terrorize humankind into near extinction? Of course they managed, because humankind is nothing more than a bunch of morrons, right? What could be the weakness of these monsters? Oh please!
Granted they're nice baddies at the start of the movie when you hardly see them at all, but near the ending it gets rather preposterous. The whole thing is a poorly thought through joke. But it was nice for the first half of the movie, hence a 5, which is very generous when you start thinking the world that was portrayed. Just after seeing the movie you'd probably rate it a bit higher, but if you start trying to make sense of it and start thinking about what you actually saw it just all falls to pieces and a 3 would be more than adequate. There is a LOT wrong with this movie. Things that just don't make sense. Leave your thinking hat at home, you won't be needing it if you want to enjoy the movie.

It wasn't a good movie but it wasn't bad movie either and as it stands I consider it to be an average film. For a first time film director John Krasinski does a pretty damn good job and while there is nothing particularly unique about his style he certainly shows his capacity to improve and show potential to improve greatly in the future. Furthermore the performance of Krasinski and Blunt are superb in the film as they give captivating emotional performances throughout the film. Now at this point you must wonder why I've only given the film a 5 when all I've done is praise it, and while the performances of the adult cast and direction are at very good standards it is the performances of the younger cast members and bad plot decisions that drag this film down heavily. The performances of the child actors in this film are painfully boring to watch and you can tell quite clearly that they're inexperienced and can only display a very limited array of acting skills. In the film everything they do looks either incredibly fake or wooden and you're begging for the next scene with adults to get back to the good parts of this film. The plot of this film relies very heavily on the aspect of suspending belief. In the film there is a limited number of creatures (atleast 4 in the films rural area) and as an audience we are supposed to believe that about roughly ten thousand of these monsters wiped out not only most of the United States which exercises the second amendment but successfully killed near 7 billion people. In the films defense the explanation given is that they're armor plated and incredibly fast, but if the films writers expect me to believe that not one weapon in the worlds global arsenal could kill a single one of these creatures, i'm not falling for it. Additionally, like all horror movies, the movie relies on the characters doing stupid sh*t to escalate the plot. This is where the film resorts to The Three Stooges levels of shenanigans, with a lack of Benny Hill track in the films final act to pump out jump scare after another. Characters basically make matters worse for themselves in the films finale as they each spend time with the creature thinking about how they'll kill themselves. This is made even more hilarious by the fact that these are people that have survived well over a year into the attack and yet manage to royally f*ck up all too effortlessly.

A Quiet Place is a well filmed original horror movie with great performances from the adult cast. However while it boast originality it's poorly constructed overall plot and bad acting from its younger leads holds this film back from being the intelligent thriller it needed to be.

Unfortunately, I found it quite disappointing. The pace is incredibly slow, particularly at the beginning, and the story becomes wearisome quickly. It has a basic premise, alien invasion, people on the run and it doesn't get any more complicated than that. Although there were some interesting scenes where the sense of imminent danger was well delivered, I never felt particularly scared which is the hallmark of any good horror. Both Emily Blunt and John Krasinski were certainly dedicated in their roles as husband and wife trying to protect their remaining children but I still never felt any connection to them or their predicament. There was no character development to speak of, and the world they inhabited was not shown or developed in any way. I'm assuming that was intentional but neither did I feel they piqued my interest in the fate of the rest of the world outside their small farm. Another issue I had was with the CG alien creatures. They looked very similar to the ones from Cloverfield lane, and it seemed there was little desire in making something new and original here. Seeing these monsters wholly unveiled left nothing to the imagination and, substantially reduced the overall tension that could have been produced had we not known what they entirely looked like or were capable of from the beginning. The story, on the whole, seemed more like a focused study on how a family would cope if such a disaster occurred and how it would alter their day to day lives as they attempted to survive rather than a developed piece of horror fiction.

Overall it's a decent albeit somewhat bland movie that's worth a look however if you're in the market for a real horror story that'll chill you to the bone for a couple of hours then this, unfortunately, isn't it.

On one hand, I can see the hype and find a lot of things to like about the movie. On the other hand, there's a ton of things I don't like about the movie that I am honestly surprised how much praise and credit it has received.

So what are the things I like? Well it's got some good atmosphere, I'll give the movie that. I wasn't sure on the premise, I felt that it was too ridiculous for me to really buy, but I think there's a nice eerie ambiance with the film. It's claustrophobic with the singular setting, the sound design is pretty solid, and even the cinematography from Charlotte Bruus Christensen and the blocking of certain shots are pretty great. I also think that John Krasinski as a director does a pretty good job, albeit not an amazing job, when it comes with working behind the camera. There was a lot of effort being made with the film and I can appreciate that. The acting is mostly good. Nothing amazing, but most of the actors does a good job with conveying their thoughts and feelings without dialogue. John Krasinski is pretty good, Emily Blunt is great as usual, Millicent Simmonds is the best child actor here (although I kept on confusing her from the girl in Heredity), and Noah Jupe is good too, although when he does talk in the film he's pretty bad.

Now what don't I like? Well the rules are pretty inconsistent and does lead to some plot holes and inconsistencies. Like the general idea is that small noises are alright, but big noises are bad. Which is fine. However it's hard to really tell what constitutes as a loud noise and a small noise. Like a toy space shuttle and a cooking alarm clock is a loud noise but apparently snapping your fingers and a fire being lit doesn't? Fire's not quiet you can still hear it! Some might say that's nitpicking, but honestly I just don't think there was a ton of care to working out the rules to making them super tight and the movie would have benefited a lot. Also what would have benefited, and this one is pretty major, is not having a score. The score used in the film is pretty bland on it's own, but it also ruins a lot of the film because it's feels so manipulative at times. I think the movie works without a score because John Krasinski does a decent job conveying the feeling of certain scenes when the movie is mute, but with the score it just feels forced with how you're supposed to feel and it just ruin a ton of scenes. Especially during the tense scenes because it is one of those damn horror films that use the "BRAAAAAAHHHH" sound during a jump scare! It makes scenes super cheesy! Speaking of cheesy, that old man scene! I bursted out laughing! I wasn't bugged too much with how the characters acted in the film, I can excuse some irrational actions because that's what humans are, but there are a ton of things that do push it. Like why would the little boy use a loud space toy when he SHOULD KNOW DAMN WELL by the information that we are given that it would be a bad idea to do so? That's the biggest one but when you break down certain character's actions and traits it can't help but feel like it's more so that either A, it's to exposition dump to the audience more about the rules, and B, these characters need to be dumb in order for the action to take place. And for the latter I can excuse that, but again there is a limit I can take!

Overall I can see why people like this movie, but honestly there's just so many problems with the film that I can't really give it too much credit than it's just around average. I didn't expect to like it, but I didn't hate it either. I was pleasantly surprised but I doubt I'll revisit this movie much after I had seen it to be honest.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's well crafted, suspenseful, solidly acted, blah, blah. But the storyline is just so lacking. It's basically centered around creatures (from God knows where) that hunt by sound... Open with a post apocalyptic landscape, cue creature terror, an hour of obligatory human foibles/stupidity and finally, the sooo easy to predict weapon against creatures is found. That's it. They could have just as easily devised a movie about creatures that hunt on smell, calling in An Odorless Place. My old college roommate's farts would be used to overwhelm the creature's senses...in the end. Hard to believe it got such a high "meta" score and 83% approval on the tomato website. But then again, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure got 78% approval there. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was okay. It wasn't too scary. It was kinda boring. I don't understand why they can't stay in a regular brick house. Get more than one guns to hide at the house. If he knew the whistling sound machine would work, why didn't he tell his family about it? Prove that it does work. Take it everywhere they go, as they find and rescue more people. Then that would've been a good story. Make more whistling sound machines to get them all clump up together and then kill them all. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Awesome performance.... but way to many plot holes

1: if the monsters can hear so well they must hear them breath or heart beat
2: why not live by the waterfall
3: in one and half year they built one sound professionally place
4: no one managed to figure out the high frequency weakness?
5: so a flimsy shot gun managed to take one down and the might of USA military couldn't?
6: why not flood the whole area with death metal music?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. On a purely superficial level this kept me entertained. I can see why it has gotten good reviews. I'm really not someone with very complex esoteric tastes when it comes to movies, and as a science fiction and fantasy fan I push the "I believe" button quite regularly, but there were far too many details about this one that instantly jumped out at me and made me cringe to let this pass without serious criticism. Spoiler alert if you haven't seen the movie - the rest of this review criticizes specific details.

For starters...the beginning of the movie...day 89. No back story to explain how these aliens arrived on earth. We're led to believe that its been almost three months since something apocalyptic has happened and yet the city streets are already conveniently lined with a soft path of beach white sand to minimize the sound of foot traffic. Where did all these tons of sand come from in only 3 months? At some point later in the move the main character adds a tiny amount of sand to a path from a pouch in his backpack...same question...where did that come from? There is no obvious source for this white sand in what appears to be a rural Midwest farming community. We are supposed to believe that miles of sand paths were placed in the short span of 3 months?

Leaving a toddler to bring up the rear of a group of people walking through a treacherous area lurking with monsters...yeah, that's realistic. The toddler would be either right in front of me or in my arms, not lingering behind where he can get snatched by the monster.

While there were many details that added to the script's credibility such as soft Monopoly board pieces and steaming food rather than frying it, but there were so many others left out it was ridiculous. Running water? Is the municipal water supply somehow still operational? Are they getting water from a well? Either way, running water makes noise and a water pump makes even more noise, and yet the monsters don't come running every time someone turns on the water.

Power...somehow there is electricity to power a multitude of electronics. I didn't see solar panels anywhere, or wind turbines. Where is the electricity coming from?

Delivering a baby. Wow...that was some conveniently quick and silent child birth! A broken water pipe floods the basement...how did that happen? A pipe mysteriously starts spewing water and filling the basement where the family is hiding out with their newborn. In what seems like a matter of minutes the basement has flooded and a monster is already there threatening mother and newborn. The monster heard the running water this time. Lame.

Acres of corn...somehow planted and harvested in complete silence.

Collective stupidity of the entire world...somehow humans are unable to figure out how to fight creatures who's existence depends on echolocation. Anybody heard of dolphins and whales? The U.S. Navy is getting sued constantly because sonar is injuring or even killing them and yet when the aliens appear on the planet we forget about sonic waves?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's go from the beginning. Creatures like shown in this movie could have never occupoed earth. They are stupid and highly vulnerable to loud noises. It's easy to lure them wherever you want and make them harmless with simple radio. So the setting is impossible. Okay, let's forget about that, and they did it. Killed most of the people on earth or in the area. Next thing. This family woudl have never lived this long. They act stupid. All the time. We could have justify their behaviour by telling that they had no resources or qualification. But they managed to create huge security system with lights and complicated radio rig. So they had no safe room? Is it that hard to make soundproof cellar? Harder then all the things they have? They have radio. Why do they need to have fireworks as a lure for creatures? Just to risk their lives? Why not to use simple sound system as a lure? Their father is intelligent enough to make a deaf-aid. And that's just big things. And okay sometimes director makes a play that has value not in terms of interest and plot but with visuals and complicated references or transfering interesting idea of the creator. And no. It uses all the cheap cliche from any horror film ever. So stupid that it's not even scary. Not telling anything about the characters or any particular story. And main idea is that kids will make you killed. Highly recommend to not to watch it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What is this. This movie was just the main cast running away from those things, the silence was just awkard and no thrillers at all, the end seem a little rushed because the dad dies they go, the beasts find them and blah blah blah, they shouldnt just made it all in one movie, I feel like the sequel is gonna be way more boring since they already know how to fix the "beasts". The cast wasnt that much of good actors, probably because 3-4 of them are kids/teens but the script also seem dumb, like whats the reasons behind all of this?? If we compare this movie to one thats similiar, "Bird Box" (not advertising) they had a reasons and ended. This movie was just dissapointing and had no thrillers. Oh and how the f*ck did she give birth to a baby in a bathtub without screaming????? Expand

They took this high-concept and stuck to it without really doing enough to go above the concept. Worse still are the grating plot potholes that are dutifully ignored by the filmmakers. This family survive 3 months and basically are alone in the world but do some really stupid things. Plus, how did the threat survive with their main prey all but gone. Anyways the film looks great and sounds spectacular, possibly the best sound design I've ever heard, which is important for a film about not making a sound! Incredibly well acted. Pacing not perfect, for a 90-minute film it could lose 10 minutes, I looked at my phone a few times. Overall, it is worth seeing but it is very unrelenting and bleak, the filmmakers were not from the Hitchcock school of film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I may be being very generous with this 7, but come on. If you are a spectator looking for entertainment and moments of tension, you will likely like the movie, even love it, but if you are more meticulous and like a really well-constructed story, you will be disappointed with several plot points. I will list some things that bothered me, to say the least. -They are living in a world where you cannot waver, or it was already, they have to be very solitary and meticulous, and for that everyone who lives with a child knows, that for that to happen, one cannot take their eyes off them 1 second, the boy taking the ship was not the girl's fault, it was the adults' fault. - For a couple who just lost their child, getting pregnant around 3 months later is just ridiculous and unacceptable. - if the noise attracts the monsters, but when there is a lot of constant noise (like in the river) they don't pay attention, why not create an atmosphere with a lot of constant noise to live ?! so the constant worry of making mistakes and dying becomes much less. - how do they store all that amount of corn and can't make a noise? has anyone already walked through a corn field, already threshing an ear? unacceptable, a fruit plantation would be much more consistent. - Another thing that bothered me a lot was the lack of defense of the environment in which they live, they could very well have built numerous traps and "safe zones" over the course of 1 year. Some may think I'm being too boring, but these are the things that support the narrative. Strengths: - Emily Blunt's performance - Photography - the suspense scenes generate a certain tension - the film ends before they make more mistakes. kkk Expand

An OK movie that I would have gotten more into if the monsters were not always CGI. A great test of how things can be communicated non-verbally, but it doesn't reach that level of intensity they were reaching for.

I don't think this is a horror movie at all. It could be a thriller and a drama. It has a good idea, but the execution is not the best.
