Because the events shown is almost exactly what happened at the battle at Thermopyles ("hot gates") at 480 BC - minus the rhinos, the elephants, the theatrical make-up of the Persians, all necessary exaggerated theatrical depictions. This movie and the comic try hard -and succeed- represent the essence of the event: 300 men tried to stop an one million+ men strong army, and almost did, if there was not Efialtis (the greek word for "nightmare" from there and on). The faces does look greek, Leonidas beard looks historically acurate, the lines are quoted from history ("come and get it", "return with that shield or on it", etc) Probably the best "Ancient Greece" movie to date. The movie is at it's best on the battlefield where the brutality, memorable one-liners, and sexy bodies are allowed to shine. These Spartans don't stand as tall when the slaughter gives way to the story. The narrative is simply not very interesting. This is due to how faithfully it adapts the source material. Frank Miller's graphic novel is simplistic, but entertaining because of the violence and art style. Almost every scene comes directly from one of the comic's panels. So the lackluster plot is no the often criticized director's fault. If anything, Snyder's role as one of the screenplay's co-writers is of benefit to the film. The original subplot where Queen Gorgo struggles to win over support from the Spartan Council is actually quite good. Of course this is also helped by Lena Headey's strong performance.

Considering how the movie suffers from the same flaws of the work on which it is based while simultaneously captures it's strengths, this might just be the most faithful adaptation ever created. 300 would rather flex it's physical muscles as opposed to it's intellectual ones, leaving most of it's brains to be smashed under Spartan heels. Yet the stylish action scenes (complete with cool slow-mo kills) and grand masculinity on display allow for plenty of barbaric thrills. The remarkably physicality on display alone make the blood spilt much more viscerally entertaining. Plus it almost made me like Gerard Butler. It's a big, dumb action movie, but it's depiction of war is spectacular and grand. As a result it's able to win you over with it's gory conflicts, hyper-stylized world, and somewhat bizarre fantasy elements. You'll just wish there was a little more going on with the story and characters.

And maybe some sex. ;) Ok, so first off im not the type of person who gets offended easily. So I don't care if this movie offended any great nations I just want to watch a good movie. And this is what 300 is. Three-hundred is based of a comic book about 300 Spartans fighting the mighty nation of Persia. This is historical except for some parts of the story. By the way the story is good, just because of the pacing and interesting characters. What put me on the edge of my seat was the action set peices, their amazing, the great visuals also make this movie nice to look at. The special features have alot of interesting stuff watch. One problem I had with the movie was the parts in Sparta during the fighting. They had me extremely bored and I just wanted to get back to the action.
I would buy this movie.

The action sequences are all very well done and well choreographed, Snyder also does a great job capturing the comic book feel required for the film and makes an incredibly entertaining film to boot. The cinematography is alright, but comes second to the brilliant golden color scheme. I loved the entire look and feel of the film. The mythology also stands in the "pro" category. However, everything else is basically a con. The film is racist, homophobic, and potentially sexist. All whites are portrayed as the good guys. Non-whites, however, are cast as the Persians. The film plays on the events of present and is entirely anti-Arab as it paints them as stupid barbarians who want nothing more than to just kill people. Meanwhile, the Spartans are painted as strategic and wise warriors. There has to be some middle ground here, as the Spartans certainly are representative of the United States at times, especially in quotes from the film about how "freedom is not free" and about the discussions about going to war. It certainly seems to look down on those who oppose war, as well. The film calls the Athenians "boy lovers" as a snide remark and the leader of the Persians could certainly be interpreted as being gay. Finally, women are relegated to simply being sex dolls for the men and when one has the gall to speak to the senate, she is roundly ignored and called an adulterous whore (though she does kill the man who said it, but nobody seemed too bothered by it in the end). The writing is horrible and all of the characters are one-dimensional (and no, not being able to show emotion because of Spartan culture is not an excuse, nor is it another dimension to their personality). Characters are cardboard cutouts of one another and it is impossible to distinguish who is is who, aside from King Leonidas of course. The film, however, is a jackpot for gyms looking for inspirational quotes to hang on their walls. I am sure most gyms got a complete makeover in that department after this film was released. Finally, the Spartan costumes seem to be an attempt to attract female viewers. For their sake, let us hope that they did not see this one, because this strikes me as a film that only men will really enjoy due to the badass nature of it.

Though I was a touch harsh here, I was entertained by 300 and the "pros" do equal the "cons" for me. Entertainment is certainly a pro as well. Overall, 300 is not horrible, but could have been far better if its ideology was not so awful.

Before director Zack Snyder was given the DC Cinematic Universe on a silver platter, one of the early films he made included '300'.

This is probably going to be a very unpopular opinion as it seems that while the critical reaction is somewhat mixed, the audiences responded more positively and more effusive. Looks like I'm with the critics on this one.

The movie stars Gerard Butler as Leonidas, King of Sparta who leads 300 Spartans into battle against Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) who has an army of roughly 300,000 soldiers. The movie is very stylish in terms of how it wants to execute its story. Director Zack Snyder does make this visually lush, but unfortunately the story comes off as non-existent as one may find the epic use of slow-motion during the battle scenes more involving than the actual story and the characters. Did anybody care, or even shed a tear for any of the soldiers that died throughout battle?

That is the main problem...if you don't care for the characters or the story, why should the amazing special effects keep us entertained? This is shot beautifully, but, there just isn't enough focus on what matters the most. 4/10.

The story-telling, and, more specifically, acting and script is laughable in this one. Though the super saturated look is interesting, the repetitive environments and cinematography grows monotonous awfully fast. Call it campy, but the lack of humour, and expectance on the viewer to care about the characters puts this movie in the mediocre area. That said watching this movie is fun, if only for the gratuitous violence and even the corn helps make it a funny video to watch with friends. But, its insistance on taking itself seriously is its downfall, and keeps it from being a "so bad its good" movie. See it for brainless entertainment, but don't expect more. Expand

Zack Snyder's 300 is, honestly, a decent film. I really don't like it as much as most people. I do like Gerard Butler's Leonidas and all the action sequences and the stylistic action, but that's about it.

Blood and testosterone.

This film is the adaptation of a graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, and also the story of Leonidas and three hundred Spartan soldiers who fought at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC). As we all know, the battle ended with the defeat of Spartans, but with major casualties in the Persian army, which was important to raise the morale of the Greeks for the following matches (Salamis and Plataea). Directed by Zack Snyder (who also wrote the screenplay with Kurt Johnstad and Michael Gordon), this movie features Gerard Butler in the lead role, Leonidas.

This film is not an epic similar to others we know: this movie is an hard-rock epic with a teen spirit, biceps and testosterone. This film is like a wrestler full of anabolic steroids and drenched in marijuana. The picture is ugly, brownish, blood is what matters to show, not the story. The costumes are clearly invention based on the graphic novel that, unfortunately, is in the film origin. The protagonist, Leonidas, is a beast full of blood-lust who Buttler lends undeserved talent. The villain, the Persian emperor Xerxes, is a devilish and effeminate creature covered in gold and mounted on a golden wedding cake, to which called the Brazilian Rodrigo Santoro (perhaps by any actor in Hollywood have allowed himself to pay similar humiliation?). Anyway ... this movie was a way to Hollywood please a teenage audience endowed with the sensitivity of a boxing glove and hungry for pure-hard action.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm really glad I watched this movie after growing up. I learnt about this movie as a kid when I watched the Deadliest Warrior episode, Spartan vs Ninja. They told about how Spartans were made famous with 300, so I thought I should definitely give it a try. I didn't even start watching it as a kid, since I found it so boring in the first five minutes. And I'm glad that I did, because this movie has a lot of things the 10 year old me would have hated to see. And as an adult those very things are what I like to see in this.

Simple review: This movie is metal. Yeah, that's all I could say about it. The grim tone, the bleak colour palette, the narration going on in the background which made it sound so melodramatic, the whole depiction of Persia in itself, the amount of slow motion violence - all of this is too much to handle for simple audience. For someone like me who is a big fan of Zack Snyder's style of cinematography, this is fantastic. Such movies give the feeling of those grim looking paintings which I love to see and feel nostalgic.

The thing about this movie is, it's not relying on the storytelling. The story is absolutely simple - The Spartan king Leonidas refused to bow before Persia and even killed their messengers. So now Persia is coming to crush them with their 10000 soldiers and beasts. Leonidas fights them back by handpicking 300 of his men. That's it. This is the story. And now they fight, which is the epic part. Like I said, as a kid I'd have hated it, and that's exactly what I'm talking about - the Spartans are completely naked and wearing red capes while the Persian Immortals are wearing black, and the Spartans kill them. They also kill the animals like rhinos, elephants and horses. These are why I'd have hated this movie as a kid.

There are many other things that this movie showed that I'd have hated as a kid, and these reasons are the same as any other family audience (I mentioned the reasons which were only specific to me before). The sex scenes, the slow pacing, the handicapped man whom Leonidas didn't let fight (I forgot his name), Xerxes and his army's camp with a goat man and weird stuff happening (people may not hate it, they'll just not get it). In the end it's told that all of this was just a story to motivate the soldiers. This is the reason why the story was demonising the Persians and portraying the Spartans as the heroes.

The thing about Zack Snyder's movies is that you can really enjoy them if you rewatch them. Because then you'd already know the story and you can just focus on how cool everything is looking. It's a pity everyone I know whom I can recommend this movie has already watched it, but at the same time it makes me feel nice about how popular this movie is. It literally made Spartans into a pop culture icon. If Leonidas were to somehow come back and see how this movie has portrayed him, he'd be really proud.

I just loved the way the film looked. This immediately endeared the film to me and drew me into the plot, which has a killer pace. There's some intro at the beginning and then from a certain point on, there's action that doesn't really let up. I didn't mind it at all though. In fact, the action scenes here are absolutely excellent. Well shot and especially well performed by the main character. Hats off to you for that. Gerard Butler was just right for this. His desire for fighting and blood seemed to transfer to me during the viewing and I enjoyed every action scene. Just a feast for the eyes. The main plot also doesn't lag behind and for me overall this is a great film that I recommend. Expand

The film has good action scenes that raise the testosterone of any being, the badass speech and a little emotion between the slaughter. I think a bad point is that things happen very fast and without much depth.

The film is based on the real Battle of Thermopylae and on the Frank Miller's comic that is very good and (IMO) more aggressive. I recommend both.
