It is implied in the graphic novel that the Spartan narrator has taken his own exaggerated and glorified perspective and brought it home to his comrades; the alleged lack of depth to this movie is merely a lack of critic's understanding of this simple notion. We see absurdity such as a rhino and mutants on screen because the Spartan storyteller is instructed to "Tell of victory" and he does so in the most monumental, epic way he can. Its truly pathetic to see that the critics actually believe that the director wasn't aware that mutants and rhinos weren't in the Battle of Thermopylae. I give this film an eight because I wanted to be attached to more than just Leonidas, his wife, and his captain - and wasn't allowed to because the film jumps rather quickly into the epic story. Beyond this, I found this film to be engaging, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable. Expand

But there is enough violent, fast, brutal action filled with the best of both worlds from Zack Snyder and Frank Miller, the graphic novelist for which the film is based. If you think this movie lacks creativity, please enlighten us on a decent comparison. The massive gore provides perspective, alongside a seamlessly bizarre visual world, and never in cinematographic history has this been created with such an outstanding outcome. The storyline has no historical values, but instead uses an uncommon time in history to give fiction a special touch of real when and where. Special effects have dubbed this movie worthwhile, as they werent used to create totally unrealistic or useless plot reliabilities. While not as well thought out or paced like other graphic novel based films (Sin City and V for Vendetta come to mind), 300 succeeds at one thing quite admirably, and that's in it's utter lack of effort to entertain. Constant visually stunning images produce near periodic gasps from the audience, creating a movie going experience unlike any this year. Just try to forget the image of the spear at the film's climax, arcing through the air towards the seemingly impentrable Xerses. Or the sight of huge lumbering elephants, falling off of a cliff into the churning waves. Or the end-all-be-all slow motion Spartan battles. All these and more come together to form an experience that dominates anything else out there at the moment. Expand

I can forgive certain exaggerations and 300 could have been a lot better if they would have used the comic book as a source of ideas, instead of trying to copy from it verbatim. It really bothered me how historically inaccurate it was. I can forgive certain exaggerations and changes for the sake of movie making, but this is blasphemy, this is madness. I did enjoy all the Spartan quips and quotes they worked into the dialogue, as did the audience who laughed at each one. All the actors excelled at their roles, especially considering it was all filmed against a green screen. Gerard Butler was perfect as King Leonidas. Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes was very imposing as well. The thing that really hurts 300 is that it can't decide if it wants to be a historical epic, comic book or video game, so it blends all three genres together with mixed results. But all in all, it should be seen. If for no other reason than to remember the epic battle and those who gave their lives to save western philosophy, rhetoric and democracy. Expand

Have we grown so jaded that even true stories about honor and glory can be laughed at? Yes, I know that this was not an historically true telling of Thermopylae. Everyone involved with "300", including Frank Miller himself, knew that. But the *spirit* of the graphic novel and the movie are true to history. And no amount of window dressing, irony, or sarcasm can change the fact that, in the year 480 B.C., less than 1000 Greek soldiers died defending their homeland from an invasion force that numbered in the hundreds of thousands. But you know what; I'm also a fan of good movies. I'll start with the positives. The movie is extremely good-looking, and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets nominated for art direction. And people are complaining about it being historically inaccurate. Duh! Didn't you see the previews. This movie's about a certain style, not a history lesson. Having said that, the action was boring because most of it was in slow motion. It seemed like half the movie was in slow motion. I've also read that people say its really manly, but its dumb, meat-head manly. And I'm all for sex, but what's the deal with the awkward, pointless sex scene. And it was hard to get "inspired" by this movie (unless inspired means going to the gym, but still, I would rent "Pumping Iron.") I didn't leave it thinking "man, those spartans went through a lot, dealing with giant rhinos, giant deforms with axes, and ninjas." It would have been good if it was a stupid, fun movie, like Sin City, but a stupid, inspirational movie? Expand

It was a great film, I'm not sory at all I saw it. Many reviewers have stated the the film is hallow and lacks emotion or substance, and to some extent this is true. This is (suprisingly) not a movie you will be thinking about the next day for any reason other than the cenamatography. Its the first matrix film if you compleatly removed the plot. Its well done and pretty to look at and has exelent action but that realy is the extent of the offer for the most part...but it deffinatly does not feel "hallow", but like I said, you won't be thinking about it tomarow. It tells the story its trying to tell in a very mater of fact manor and it does that well. Its no Gladiator, but its deffinatly worth seeing in a time where most movies are compleate let downs. You will only be unhappy if you go in thinking is another epic, it falls a bit short but if you expect little, you will be pleasently suprised. This movie is diserving of a green score in my book. But what hollywood movie/comic does? Galdiator did not follow the truth. If a movie were to follow the true story of anything, no one would watch it, at least the mass. This movie has a great mixture of art and the art of war. A very poetic movie based off a graphic novel. Along with the violence you have nudity, but not demeaning at all. To me this film reminded me of all the old ancient greek/roman statues we all see. Like Nike adjusting her sandles, the oracle dances in the nude with similar thin silky robes wrapped around her body. One thing that bugs me about the whole Sparta vs Persian debate is that people try to nit pick everything they see. Right now the Iranians are having an uproar because they think the "persians" in the movie depick them as what they used to be. First thing first. This movie does not say "america vs Iraq." This movie is about the 300 spartans that went to war with all of persia. Persia is not Iraq. Sure, they are in the same place...but Persia is dead. This is just a movie off of a Graphic Novel. The monsters in the movie are creative, they remind me of something you will see in a comic book. Anyways, enough of my rant. If you have not seen the movie yet because of the reviews on this site, then you are missing out on a great experience. I went into this movie not knowing anything really and came out excited and ready to see it again. 300 is a masterpiece. Expand

You have to suspend disbelief for a few hours and just ENJOY the movie. 300 is the kind of movie that makes me want to be a better filmmaker. The cinematography of the film is gorgeous. The intensity of the film kept the entire theatre at the edge of their seats. The beginning is a little slow, as are most scenes that explain the exposition and background of a character. Other than that, the scenes were beautifully crafted so that there wasn't too much action without a storyline. Definately see this film in the theater if you can. Make your own judgment about it. Everbody that I have talked to thought it was amazing. And for you people who clame "it was not historicly accurate".. your wrong. Do some research. Didnt you ever pay attention in History class? The movie (and the graphic novel that it is translated from) is pretty dead on with the actual battle. The action was very well choriographed (im too lazy to find the right spelling), and the acting was top notch. The dialog was great, not over bearing, but moving when it needed to be. Go see it for yourself, but keep an open mind. Yes there is lots of cg (computer graphics), but it simpy adds to the whole theme of the story, with dark clouds, and dirty landscapes. It shows the grim situation facing the Spartans. One last note, I find it funny and frustrating, that movie critics are always ripping apart book to movie translations... why? because they leave out too much. They complain that so and so should have been left in.. and so on. Yet Zach Snyder (the director) did a bold thing and directly took the graphic novel and put each page (from what ive read) into the movie. Nothing is left out, and not very much is added, besides some dialog. You think that would be good right? Take a look at Village Voice review... "Frankly, it's the slavish, frame-by-frame devotion to Miller's source material that's the problem."....well I guess some critics just cant be pleased either way.... Expand
