"His vision narrows, his shield is heavy." I felt I was watching a National Geographic special on African lions eyeing their prey. "The lion's vision sharpens, his sense of smell is keen, he attacks." What a disappointment of film-making.

Total eye candy and testosterone. I liked it a ton. Don't get me wrong - you won't find any deep meaning or inspiration here BUT if you just relax and enjoy the ride, it's a blast.

Good action and visual effects. Comic book style is engaging. Would have benefited from a stronger dramatic story with more twists or plot complications. Nonetheless, an entertaining film.

Excellent as a video game; poor excuse for a movie. Blantant rape of known historical facts. To paraphrase a recent facetious college editorial about sexual rape - close your eyes and relax and you may find you enjoy it!

All the characters are one-notes at best with Leonidas being especially tiresome as almost every other line of dialogue is trite, cliche, and yelled at you. This battle cry delivery becomes the sole method of conveying both the drama of the moment and the persistent theme of the movie, that Spartans are badasses. Am I supposed to sympathize with this ancient clan of fascists? Twenty minutes into it I already felt numb with the realization that I simply did not care what happened to the characters on the screen. The only thing I kept asking myself was why McNulty agreed to do this. Expand

Tonight, I went to the theater to see the movie "300," a glorified account of the conflict between the Spartan city-state (in modern-day Greece) and Persian invaders, led by the Persian king Xerxes. The movie is about the battle of Tonight, I went to the theater to see the movie "300," a glorified account of the conflict between the Spartan city-state (in modern-day Greece) and Persian invaders, led by the Persian king Xerxes. The movie is about the battle of Thermopylae in 450 BC, in which 300 Spartans held off millions of invading Persian armies. The movie depicts the harsh warrior culture of Sparta in glowing, glorified terms. Children are trained in combat "from the time they could stand," and the movie depicts their fathers striking them with closed fists during intense bouts of training. No one seems reluctant to endure this suffering; ALL maddeningly embrace it. Boys are sent out into the wilderness in rags, armed with a spear, braving the ice and snow bear-chested and without so much as a shoe on their feet. I suppose to wear warm clothing would be a sign of shame, culturally-imposed by the glorious warrior culture. Of course, the subtext behind this whole movie is that all this harsh living is necessary for the survival of the state against foreign invaders. Those who would demur in the face of such a threat would surely be called cowards, whether their motivation was cowardice or not. As the movie unfolds, it becomes immediately obvious that there is no room for tenderness, no longing for a life of peace, no enjoyment of one's existence. There is only self-sacrifice, of boys and men, who must constantly prepare to pay the ultimate price in order to defend this culture of self-annihilation. But in the movie "300," the headlong rush toward violent conflict is not depicted as a necessary evil, or even an evil at all. Death is depicted as glorious, so much so that the truly brave lust for death. This is not a movie that promotes bravery, but rather bravado. The value of each Spartan soldier is measured in terms of his lust for danger and death, for his willingness to pay for the country's "freedom" through willing self-sacrifice. This is how men are portrayed: valuable if they hope for, run toward, and drink deeply of death. The wife of the brave Spartan king is portrayed much differently. While he is off fighting a desperate struggle, she remains behind. Her burden is the sorrow she feels that her husband is away. Her parting words to him -- as he departed from her for a hopeless battle -- were, "Come back with your shield, or with your head on it." Moviegoers are intended to respond to this display with stupefied admiration. [***SPOILER***] Our warrior hero is Sparta's King Leonidas, now on the battlefield in a desperate struggle against overwhelming odds. His wife is Queen Gorgo. Left behind, Queen Gorgo is left with the task of summoning the country's political leaders to send the full army to reinforce her husband's tiny force of 300. The leader of this council is named Theron, a corrupt politician. He intimidates her with veiled threats to kill her son, then comes at night with a promise to lend her political support if she will submit to being raped by him. He tries to shame her by pointing out that her husband is defying Spartan law by deploying troops without authorization. He tries to shame her by contrasting her comparatively comfortable existence with the gore her husband is swimming in. Taunting her, he asks her, "What do YOU have to offer?" She drops her clothes in response, turns around, and as he begins the rape, he tells her the encounter will "not be short, and it will not be pleasant." The next time we see Queen Gorgo and Theron together is in the presence of Sparta's council. She makes a plea for the deployment of troops to assist her husband, a speech laced with platitudes about bravery and freedom. Theron, convinced that he "owns" the council ("I created it with my bare hands"), unexpectedly denounces the plan to save Queen Gorgo's husband. In a spiteful tirade, he belittles and mocks her. Some in the council speak against him ("how dare you" insult the Queen), but he shames them into silence by pointing out their own corruption in the acceptance of bribes. Even the queen's defenders lack moral value. As Theron's tirade against the queen reaches a crescendo, he insults her honor by calling her a whore. The queen turns away, defeated, insulted, her honor in disarray. Suddenly she turns the tables and stabs Theron with a sword, the picture of female empowerment -- saving her own hide despite the good intentions of her would-be saviors, the corrupt male politicians who were too impotent to defend her. As I watched this scene come to this climax, women sitting throughout the theater erupted into spontaneous applause. In the face of a non-lethal threat -- a mere insult -- the queen's honor had been avenged with lethal force, and by the only one competent enough to avenge it: the queen. Back on the battlefield, a disfigured and weak Spartan (who was rejected by King Leonidas as unfit for battle) lends his support to the Persian enemy in a display of revenge. The Persians take tactical advantage, and soon the 300 brave Spartan warriors are surrounded, then annihilated -- including King Leonidas. The parting shot of our hero is of a man beaten, but brave -- pinned to the ground with scores of arrows dug into his flesh. He dies in agony, but he dies bravely -- a martyr -- the epitome of what all Spartan men should aspire to become. A volley of thousands more arrows are launched at his twisted body as the camera fades out. The lesson to be learned from this movie is subtle. Men are portrayed as valuable and noble not when they lust for life, but when they lust for death. The most honorable men are indeed the ones who die. Contrast this with the portrayal of Queen Gorgo. Her worth was her dignity, not her compulsion with self-sacrifice. Her worth was shown in her desire to live -- despite the specter of rape, child molestation, and public humiliation. Her worth was shown in her empowerment to exact revenge against her male oppressor, despite having no one capable enough to risk themselves to save her. Her departing camera shot has her standing in a majestic field, gazing off into the distance as her young son runs to her side. She is the mother, the nurturer, and the intact survivor. She has braved this battle, and despite her pain has prevailed. Not only this, but she has saved all of Sparta by convincing the male politicians that they are well-served in deciding to defend themselves. The final shot of the movie is of a sea of tens of thousands of Spartan warriors, yelling battle cries in willing anticipation of the coming military threat. King Leonidas' death, along with the deaths of the 300, had been the catalyst to convince the warrior culture to defend itself. This was, however, only possible when his wife made a speech. If you can't see the cheapening of human life in this movie -- especially that of boys and men -- and the glorification of males only in their embrace of self-demise, you are truly a part of the misandry generation. And the enjoyment did not come from the story itself. The story was just an excellent excuse to have a visual blast on the big screen. It was just lovely to watch. Violence made aesthetic. Don't get me wrong. As fascistoid stories make good, brainless entertainment I don't think it should be practised outside the big screen. Maybe movies like this should warn potential moviegoers; "This movie, while inspired by historic events (that are blurry in detail and most likely exaggerated by its original tellers), should be viewed purely as enterainment and nothing more. Please do not use this as inspirational material in society." Expand

Of course the democrats hate this movie because of the singular line referring the Athenians as "Boy Lovers" and the concept of fighting necessary battles, spreading freedom, and realizing that evil must be confronted. Wow history really does repeat itself. The critics trashed it but talk to the average Joe who saw it and you'll hear unprecedented praise. The cinematography is top notch and the dialogue is excellent, always tongue in cheek, but never seeming to corny or unreal. People have been complaining about the casting of Gerard Butler as King Leonidas but SCREW THEM! Gerard Butler delivers a master performance showing clearly all that an actor can be. His character is so excellently done because of him and he's done arguably one of the best performances EVER. You can tell he's a strong man internally and externally. However while he is brutal, he also has a very thoughtful, sensitive side that comes out often when he is training his son and talking to his wife, who he kind of looks to as a second conscience. Even within the first few scenes you can tell how much time he took getting into that roll. Gerard makes you KNOW who Leonidas is. While others say his Scottish accent is centuries off it fits perfectly and the tone of his voice defines his character. As for the historical accuracy, no there were not actually any elephants and Ephilates wasn't really deformed, but hey, even Heroditus sacrificed some fact for the sake of entertainment when he wrote "The Histories". So acknowledging that comment: ITS A MOVIE ENJOY IT AND TAKE IT FOR WHAT ITS WORTH! You could go on forever talking about how good this movie is and all the nooks and crannies of it but if I have to give one complaint, the only one I can think of is this: They pronounce his name Le-o-NI-DIS. Its pronounced Le-o-NI-THAS. Other than that its flawless. 300 is a movie that delivers the powerful themes of love, strength, morality, justice, and responsibility in an absolutely amazing way. Pass the popcorn! Expand

The viewer wont be bored for the next 3 hours (except maybe by some of the political scenes at come up between the battles). Still, the whole "super fighting force" idea is not new and this film wont be the last to use it. I heard a lot of rumors that this is a fascist attempt to show how one race is superior to another. Personally I think that no one should refer to WW2 by watching this film as probably the Germans stole the whole idea from the Spartans (i doubt if it was the inverse). The graphical effects of the film are stunning and the switch between slow motion and normal one are well placed and keep the viewer hooked for the duration of each battle. The climax comes when you see father and son fighting alongside, killing a mass of enemies. This film is far more about male-bonding then something else. People will probably claim its more or less "a homosexual feast" and I would be partially one with their opinion - something about 300 pumped on steroids warriors makes me feel a lot more feminine then usual. In conclusion this film is entertaining and would be difficult to forget. Some of the punch lines will stay with me for the next ten years. This film is good and to say the opposite would be madness. Madness? No! This is Sparta! Expand

I am Greek so I care for one thing a faithful representation of the Spartan Spirit. This movie will make you believe that it was made by a Spartan. It exagerates in a lot repects but in a dramatic way, an artistic way. Those people who think I am Greek so I care for one thing a faithful representation of the Spartan Spirit. This movie will make you believe that it was made by a Spartan. It exagerates in a lot repects but in a dramatic way, an artistic way. Those people who think that there is a lot of violenece , sex and corny dialogue then obviously do not read history and do not understand it. This is Sparta and this is Ancient Greece. Greek Culture is based on the belief in Human Spirit. We are pasionate people and ancient greek were even more passionate. They had to be as Ancient Greece were surrounded by enemies. But this movie appeals to non-Greek as well since is all about Strength and Honour which can be found in every nation. I have to agree that visual effects are that impressive. This movie is not based so much in 3d effect but on color and photography . Afterall this is no Lord of the Ring but a historical event. Music is excellent eventhough not as unique as you may have heard in the trailer Acting is really very good. Only one actor is very well known but the rest just do the job.But you can see that most credit goes to director which made a Spartan , which means straight to the point. The movie as I said is largely based on historical facts even things that may seem exagerations did really happen. That is the position of spartan women, the toughness of Spartan as soldier, the military education of the boys, etc. Of course there are things that differ. Like leonidas looks like 30 years old eventhough he was 50, diffirent helmets and body armor etc. But the purpose is to motivate and bring back Sparta ideals and it does that exactly . This is not a mere pop-corn movie. This is Human faith. This is Sparta. Expand

Where's the Blood ? Ok, ok - there was lots of "CG" blood - but where was the blood that "should have been there" ? Ok, ok - there was lots of "CG" blood - but where was the blood that "should have been there" ? There were stabbings, impalings, decaptations and more - blood was "flying around", but apparently it all evaporated !! None landed on anyone, on the ground, on the sheilds - no blood to be found anywhere ! Even the bodies of those killed with arrows lying on the ground there was no blood surrounding the punctures. Ok, so you may say that it was supposed to be "art" and not reality - fine - but for my tastes, it seems like a glaring omission of detail that would have made a bigger impact if they had actually left the blood in. Lastly - I have NO idea what was historically accurate versus what was made up - (and I don't really care) - but what struck me as odd was that why-oh-why, if you "had" hundreds of thousands of Spartans to send to battle, why would you only send 300 ?? If you were the King - just "do" it ! Why be a slaughtered lamb for nothing ?? This lack of logic is just as dumbfounding as that stupid Last Samurai movie, where they all went to battle for the sake of stupidity - and even after losing, life went on as it did before - (basically they fought and died for nothing). You would think that I did not like the movie from this review - but apart from the lack of "logical" blood and the fallacy of the slaughter of the 300 lambs - I thought the movie was thoroughly enjoyable. (Yes, I just said I thoroughly enjoyed it !) Expand

is the film campy? yes and no; this is how we believe they would talk and look and feel. we all watched braveheart and thought, 'ya that's how they'd talk and act and live etc.' b/c we look at that time period as dark and unsophisticated. we look at the greeks at socialized and understandable and that's what we get. it is definitely a love or hate film, i don't think there is an in the middle with this one nor do i think you can blame someone for hating or loving it. its one of those films that you see and think one of two ways; 1. amazing, beautiful, epic or 2. gratuitous, spacious, pointless. and depending on what your expectations were is where you'll sit. a note to those that have not seen the film: expect a violent, fast paced and action driven film not a historical, slow, plot/dialogue drive piece.
