    One of the greats, really good combat system with a satisfactory feel when aiming and shooting. Add that up with, a now classic, gorgeous level design, it gives you the true feel of Halo. A genre defining game that definetly deserves the praise and fame it has gotten all over the years. Great starting point for such an illustrious saga.

    To this day I'm thankful for the lanhouse dude that showed me this game. Fell in love, the lore. The writing, the characters, the sounds and music. The plasma grenades and needler were jaw dropping first time I got to see them in action. The gameplay is similar to other FPSs of the time, but the guns and everything else make it feel like something out of this world.

    The 2nd best of Halo games. Laid the foundation for the next 20 years, which for me has been mostly squandered sadly. But this is good fun.

    This game is now over 20 years old and it still hasn't been topped. Everything about this game is fantastic. The story, the atmosphere, the soundtrack, I love everything about it.

    Few are the people who don't know what Halo is. Even if you've never played any games, there's a big chance that you've heard of Halo before. That's how impactful the game was when it first came out.     Few are the people who don't know what Halo is. Even if you've never played any games, there's a big chance that you've heard of Halo before. That's how impactful the game was when it first came out. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of it back then and I never played games growing up, so I didn't care for any of it.

    Playing Halo in 2021, in order to fully enjoy what it brought to the table you have to experience other games from that era, without it, you'll never truly understand why it's praised. Either way:

    The gameplay still feels tremendously solid and it's always fun. The story wasn't. By today's standards, the campaign is pretty much just a backdrop for the action which you don't really pay attention to. Its most impactful moments felt flat to me; it didn't help I was spoiled on one of those. The mission design was also extremely boring, there are some missions which is the same copy and paste room over and over and over, always fighting the same enemy faction. There is also one mission which asks the player to traverse the environment that they already played through during the previous mission. The lack of waypoints during those, coupled with the same bland looking rooms made it so I pulled a YouTube guide more than once to figure out where to go. The score is phenomenal when it actually plays, which is not very often. The lack of score for a lot of the moments are praised by a lot of fans but to me it made the environments feel even more bland when all I could hear were my footsteps in a massive cargo bay while I tried to look for a button to press in order to progress, for example.

    Overall, while I have nothing but the utmost respect for Bungie for creating such a massive and innovating game, back when it first came out, it, sadly, in my eyes, just doesn't stand up to the test of time, besides the gameplay and soundtrack.    … Expand

    I would say that the game still holds up pretty well, you can tell how much effort was put into it, and the attention to detail is surprising. The game has AI I have never seen before. They behave so perfectly, making the game feel almost as a chess match!     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The original. It's crazy how much this game still holds up and how ahead of it's time it truly was. Let's see why that is.

    Its story is not really that special. It has two things going for it: the characters and the Flood. The characters of Halo are primarily Chief and Cortana with Guilty Spark becoming prominent around the halfway point. Chief and Cortana have a great dynamic, the classic witty and stoic combination. The Flood is a great twist. The whole time we've spent on the ring it's been fighting the Covenant and now we get introduced to something far worse than the Covenant. This further increases the tension as you now have two threats to deal with. The story is good and presented well.

    The campaigns gameplay is amazing. Every gun, every vehicle, every enemy has a purpose. Nothing feels redundant or useless. The level design is great, but the repeated layouts are tedious. This is my biggest problem with the campaign going through the same room five times does not keep me engage, it make me wanna gouge out my eyes. I understand development wise why this happened but that doesn't excuse it. Despite that glaring flaw, the gameplay is fun and engaging.

    The multiplayer is interesting. Combat Evolved has a very distinct multiplayer from the rest of the series, and I'm spilt on whether or not I like it. It's fun, don't get me wrong but compared to something like Halo 3 or Reach? I think it's uniqueness will keep me coming back to it, because there isn't really anything else like it, but I don't think it's even close to the best in the series.

    Overall, this game is amazing. Great story, gameplay and multiplayer. There's a reason why Xbox and Halo go together and why Halo is a franchise. This is a great game and will go down is history as one of the best FPS games (at least on console).    … Expand

Each weapon is viable on every difficulty and for the first game to implement the 2 weapon system it worked perfectly as each weapon had a role for example plasma will burn shields faster while bullets do more damage to flesh.Halo CE is a masterpiece and aged like fine wine. Furthermore the AI is far superior to most new FPS games as they are fair but smart and you learn to exploit their weaknesses as you pay through the game, there is very little bs even on legendary and most of the times you die it will be your fault not unfair AI. The balancing is perfect. As for the story, its good but quite slow as its setting up the rest of the franchise but conveys the theme of mystery extremely well and the introduction of the flood on 343 Guilty spark is perfect. Bungie did a great way at creating a mysterious atmosphere and you are always left with questions in each mission making you want to learn more. The characters are good, particularly Chief, Cortana and Keyes. My personal favourite missions are Silent Cartographer, Two Betrayals and The Maw. Only problem with the campaign is some of the levels are too repetitive and enclosed but this can be forgiven as it came out in 2001.
    I havent played too much of the multiplayer but from what i have played the maps are great and extremely unique and it's a lot of fun.    … Expand

Oh and a quick reminder, you MUST play this with a friend. It's the perfect way to make them fall in love with this franchise.

    I played this game 18 years after it was released and even with the very aged graphics the game still looks and feels amazing. Its gameplay that is still fun all these years later make me call it nothing but a masterpiece. It is one of the most amazing sci-fi experiences of all time and is a must play for all old and new FPS fans.

    One of my favorite games! The Weapon Sandbox is perfect no weapons overlaps another weapon's purpose. Enemies are very fun to fight and this game is definitely worth multiple playthroughs

    What a great start to the series. This was a revolutionary game for the time and is still fun to play to this day. It's not as legendary as some of the sequels, but it is a great FPS overall.

    Originally i gave this game a 10 but to be honest, Halo was never a masterpiece.
    It's one of the most overrated shooters in the history but that doesn't mean it's not fun to play because Halo's gameplay will suck you ib.
    The story is really simple and isn't that much complex, there might be twist here and there but it's kind of forgettable. Halo's best offering is direction and presentation.

    It is still the revolutionary shooter it is acclaimed to be, however there are a two issues that really bring its score down. First, the driving is terrible, warthog handling specifically is absolute garbage, I don't see how anyone settled for that. Pretty annoying the final    I am reviewing this in 2021, so I am basing my review not only on the game itself, but how it holds up years later.

    It is still the revolutionary shooter it is acclaimed to be, however there are a two issues that really bring its score down. Pretty annoying the final missions is an intense escape but I'm detached because the DRIVING SUCKS. This was a real deal breaker, Secondly, the checkpoints are inconsistent which is frustrating, sometimes I'd die in similar place 4 times and would respawn anywhere near the first 3 times, and if that's because the game is taking pity then I don't like that either, consistency is key.

    Overall though, fun and brilliant shooter that changed the game, my first completed halo. I hope when I play through the rest there have been some improvements    … Expand

    Just like Doom, Quake, and Goldeneye Halo is a legend in the FPS genre. With it's closed to open level design to it's split screen co-op and multiplayer Halo CE is a must have for any Xbox owner. Whether that be the original verson or the remastered Xbox One version. It is hard to imagine now that we are 20 years removed from its release but Halo absolutely revolutionized the genre, asJust like Doom, Quake, and Goldeneye Halo is a legend in the FPS genre.     Halo's level design was a bit lazy, it wasn't that much of a concern since CE was the most advanced shooter in the market back in the day but nowadays it can feel a bit repetitive and that's my only problem with Halo. More varied level design could have made Halo a more memorable journey but Halo did its job pretty well. Halo was the next step in the industry, which was surpassed by Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2 was surpassed itself three years later by Halo 3.    … Expand

I didn't play the game in 2001 but i experienced some of the levels the most interesting one for me was assault on the control room. Sometimes the level design works and other times it doesn't, after assault on the control room, 343 guilty spark started really interesting but after you go inside the structure the level just goes downhill after that. The decline in quality in the second half resulted in better presentation and cutscenes. The game had some spawn problems in some places but normally everything played out perfectly. The Story is simple but well-written and expertly-directed. Halo's biggest strength is the music, the adaptive music in halo makes the experience more powerful and immersive than any other shooter in the market. The voice acting is top-notch amd the graphics are still impressive, i like the simplicity of them. The anniversary graphics are an eye sore. What made Half-Life so exciting was the simple premise yet the complex narration. Halo benefits from that as well, Halo tells an epic meaningful sci-fi story dynamically. If you haven't played Halo i highly recommend playing it, i played the steam version of halo but with the original graphics and i ran into no bugs or glitches.… Expand

    The story centers around Master Chief, an legendary super soldier with the voice of a golf announcer who can only move at a saunter-probably because it looks like he is wearing a robot diaper. So MC and his crew come across a mysterious planet in the shape of a ring (or “Halo”) they decide to investigate to get to the bottom of this new wonder and it all goes sideways from there.

    The thing they probably soon realize about this planet is the beings who created the universe really like smashing the copy and paste buttons. I really hate it when a game reuses maps or buildings, but this one does it to the extent that you will literally get lost thinking you've already been through an area before. And these areas are boring to begin with! Why repeat them?

    Most FPS games (especially legendary games like this) are only as good as the guns that you spend the whole game shooting. Well get ready for disappointment! If you do get non-junk weapon it will run out of ammo in about three minutes. You'll be stuck hurling harsh words at enemies that do more damage than your other alternatives.

    And there is the infamous Warthog! Six years after this people will be complaining about the Mako in Mass Effect. I'd drive a Mako to work everyday if it meant not going anywhere near a Warthog. There is one sequence at the very end that is meant to be an epic escape while driving one of these pieces. It absolutely seems like a joke. Like someone said “you know what goes well with tires? Peanut butter!”

    You'll also spend a lot of time wondering where you're supposed to be headed. It's tough to keep a well paced story or gaming experience with almost no direction. Sometime you'll get an arrow on the floor or your trusty AI will remember to put a waypoint out there, but usually you'll pass the same room five times without being sure they didn't just copy/paste it again.

    I can accept that video games have come a long way since 2001. I just think that this game is vastly overrated. The story is generic and just seems like a bunch of unconnected maps, the characters are boring cardboard cut outs, and the gameplay is bottom of the barrel FPS. If you want a game from 2001 that still holds up well, try Clive Barker's Undying. Or Soul Reaver 2. Or even Conker's Bad Fur Day.    … Expand

    Holy COW! This game is amazing. This may be one of the best FPS games of all time, trust me. The gameplay is always balanced, and the weapons are amazing. The enemies are not crazy overpowered but they can pose a challenge if you are not being careful and on your toes. This game is definitely worth playing and getting an Xbox for!

The soundtrack is amazing, the gameplay is so balanced and fun, the storyline is intriguing and mysterious, the characters are memorable and the experience is simply timeless.     Pese a los años sigue siendo un gran fps de acción y sci-fi, la historia esta bien, los niveles, enemigos y armas son clásicos hasta el día de hoy muy buen juego.
    Punto positivos: gameplay, historia, armas, escenarios,
    Negativos: hay algunos niveles sobre todo al final que se sienten repetitivos pero nada que dañe demasiado la experiencia.

    Still after 20 years this is one of the best games of all time. The music, Campaign, and Multiplayer are still great. I recommend buying Master cheif collection to play Combat evolved because its much easier.

    Halo Combat Evolved is for me one of the best FPS games ever made.
    Soundtrack is excellent.
    Game play is still fun and will be still fun.
    Enemies are interesting and fun to play with.
    Story is well written.

    Easily, one of the games I have finished more than 10 times. The story of the Master Chief exploring Halo is a classic, but it was not there where I spent most of the time with this game, it was in the amazing and funny multiplayer!

Our family just bought XBOX because they thought it was cooler, but when halo came everybody in my family was hooked to it, my brother and father, and my mother loved the story and visuals of the game. Halo CE is a very Special game in many aspects, and probably the best fps ever made.

    This game made history with it's gameplay and story, the people who play a shooter with controller should thank bungie and halo CE, cause if it wasn't for CE, people were still playing shooters with mouses and keyboards, well i'm not saying mouse and keyboards are bad, no, i'm just saying they are not the best way to play halo :)
