This is only a $20 game, so Im perfectly happy seeing a game thats got repetitive gameplay and slightly off visuals, especially when the game designers went out of their way to make Evil Dead fans happy. Nuf said, play on.
-
A good way to describe it would be to call it Gauntlet with a chainsaw and shotgun, as you're constantly swarmed by enemies who need a good killing, all while looking for keys. There's some repetition to be found in key-hunting, but there's just so much fun to be had in the meantime it's easy to accept.
-
Game InformerHolds its own as an action title. If you happen to be a fan of "Evil Dead" or Bruce Campbell, its faithfulness to the films' essence makes it a must buy. [June 2003, p.114]
-
The repetitive combat wont wow hardcore action fans, but committed zombie-hunters might enjoy the challenge and the attitude. Hail to the king, baby.
-
A fun little romp with plenty of gratuitous violence, witty one-liners, and hilarious cutscenes.
-
It's not the most gripping story we've ever come across, but it certainly isn't the worst, and if you like zombie films then it'll be right up your street.
-
Cheat Code CentralThe extra video with Bruce talking about the game and his experience over the years is worth the price alone.
-
Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick tells the story of cult classic hero Ash as he tries to rid the town of Dearborn from the evil creatures known as Deadites.
-
Plabyable and for the most part just what you'd want from an Evil Dead game, but scuppered by some treacly objectives. [GamesMaster]
-
Its a great idea, but I believe all avenues of zombie-rampages have already been thoroughly exposed in many other games, not to mention the movies. Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick will keep you entertained for all of about 10 hours.
-
It's fun, mainly due to the chainsaw and shotgun action. The one-liners themselves are worth at least a rental.
-
To be fair, games aren't meant to replicate the dynamics of cinema. Especially ones like "State of Emergency," the anarchic kill-'em-all from which A Fistful of Boomstick derives its engine.
-
Specifically for Evil Dead fans. Aside from Ash, the game doesnt have a lot to offer hardcore gamers.
-
Fans of the movie series do not want to be solving complex puzzles they want to be slaying the dead and A Fistful Of Boomstick gives constant opportunity for this.
-
Mindlessly amusing at first, Fistful of Boomstick is ultimately a fistful of monotony and derivative gameplay, saved from gaming's abyss by the humor and life injected from its infamous lead character.
-
Whether or not you'll take to A Fistful of Boomstick will hinge primarily on your appreciation of Bruce Campbell's speaking voice and your love of cheesy one-liners.
-
Official Xbox MagazineLittle errors such as collision detection are present, and the bland visual effects result in a game that controls poorly, looks bad, and is generally not much fun at all. [July 2003, p.79]
-
Play MagazineIt works on a certain level; if only the game had a better soundtrack (much better), a more organic feel (it's very antiseptic), a strafe, a better flow and a tad more diversity. [Aug 2003, p.76]
-
Those who love Evil Dead will enjoy the game and the one-liners. The ending alone is worth playing through the game for.
-
A weak game with some good features; namely, the combo system and the fact that it sells for only 20 bucks. Yep, 20 bucks. However, waves of meaningless enemies, stupid objectives and a very limited shelf life make it quite evil indeed.
-
GMR MagazineUnder normal circumstances, this would be just tedious, but combined with endless deadite enemies and little in the way of ammunition and health packs, it's a sermon on frustration. [July 2003, p.79]
-
If you are in the mood for a mindless action game that will provide you a short burst of fun, this title will fit the bill. It starts off fun and has enough of the Evil Dead feel to warrant its price tag.
-
Players are ultimately better off with "Hunter: The Reckoning" for a similar style of game that at least features multiplayer support, different characters, and experience-based attributes.
-
Xbox Nation MagazineThis is a fistful of something, all right. And it's not to be stepped in, taken internally, or flung at humans. [Aug 2003, p.81]
-
Gameplay? Boring. Get Item A to access Area B, then talk to this guy to find out where to pick up Item C. Youre being led around by the nose the entire time, and enemies just spawn over and over again... A slap in the face of Evil Dead fans everywhere. Absolute drek.
