There is a fundamental lack of creativity and risk taking here. The game is disappointing, not because it fails at materializing its vision, but because of how poor the vision is in the first place.

Technically speaking, there is no space exploration to be found anywhere, rather an endless concatenation of ad nauseum loading screen, and fetch quests.

Bethesda has a problem, where are the talents ? Where are the visionaries and innovators ? Collapse

The stories told, both through the main quest as well as through side content like factions, capture the sense of awe that major franchises in Sci-Fi have captured for decades. Whether you want to play as a space explorer working for a long forgotten institution mapping the most distant portion of the universe, or a bounty hunter hired to eliminate major threats to the system, the story is yours to create.

Throughout the game, Bethesda has shown arguably it best writing since Oblivion, though it may be their best writing yet. The main quest has a major element of mystery, providing the player with a sense of discovery during their adventure, effectively reinforcing the feeling of being one of the first to discover the mysteries of the beautifully crafted universe. Side quests and faction quests will pull you into rabbit holes of experiences so vast and deep they will leave you forgetting the main quest even exists. The wide array of gameplay mechanics from outposts, the logical next-step of Bethesdas Fallout series, to shipbuilding, a feature fittingly unique to the genre, leave the power of a choose-your-own-adventure game fully to the player. Gunplay feels very good, the best a Bethesda game has to offer. And space combat while tough in the early hours captures the starship dogfight feel perfectly.

While its pros most definitely outweigh its cons, some still do hold it back from being a true masterpiece. This mostly boils down to performance, which takes some hits in densely populated areas. This, alongside some bugs, and the lack of a proper performance mode on console leave it just out of reach of the masterpiece rating. But it is most definitely a contender for the best Bethesda experience of all time and Game of the Year on top of it.

My real score is 8/10. I put 10 to counter all ps fanboys 0. Btw I’m a giga fan of playstation. I’ve been playing on my ps5 since November 2020. I never owned an xbox until a week ago. I am one of those who did not have the choice to buy a console to play the game.

I’m going to address to playstation fans that are extremely pissed off the game is an xbox exclusive. I understand your frustration enormously. That said to give a 0 on metacritic will not change anything. It is not the fault of the game that this masterpiece is exclusive to Microsoft. It’s Bethesda’s leader fault. Write them emails, flood their mail inbox endlessly, go protest in front of their office, but do not come to put 0 here. You are not happy when xbox fanboy put 0 to God of War, The last of us etc So please do not act like them.

Let’s start with the negative. The biggest flaw in the game is not a flaw of the game in itself. It’s more the fact that the game is exclusive to Microsoft. Let me explain . The xbox controller is a real filth. It is too small, the back buttons ( the equivalent of r2 and l2 on the dualsense ) are too close. My two index fingers almost touch themselves. They are also too much forward and I have to bend my hand up a little to weigh at the bottom of the buttons to have the maximum sensations. The handles on both sides of the controller where you hold the controller are much too short. I feel like I hold a mini board in my hand rather than a controller. As a result, it’s extremely uncomfortable and destroys a lot of the fun. The other big problem is the total lack of feedback. The vibrations are okay for space combat but for ground combat, it’s awful. There is so little feedback that when I shoot with a gun, I feel like I am pressing down into the vacuum. Now, the lack of adaptive triggers makes this problem much worse. I thought it was just haptic feedback and adaptive trigger that made the ps5 controller incomparably superior. Finally it’s not just that it’s the entire design. So it makes the pleasure and the satisfaction of the fight much reduced and it’s a very big problem for me. It still not as bad as a mouse keyboard.

The other big problem is the 30 fps. Although it is more stable than other games ( when you put them in quality mode ) since it is optimized for 30, I miss the 60. Even if you had to release it six months later or invest a little more. It would have been worth it.

    Now the positive

    Graphics:

If we compare it to other games of its time, Starfield is their most beautiful game. We know that Bethesda never makes the most beautiful graphics but this one is the most up to date compared to other AAA. In some places, like rocks textures or robots, it feel next gen graphics. In other places it is more blurry and facial expressions are a bit dated but a gigantic improvement compared to fallout 4 and 76.

    Interaction with NPCs

As usual, Bethesda always pushes the boundaries on this side. We can start discussions with hundreds of NPCs. Ask them questions, inform ourselves, make fun of them, lie to them, threaten them, persuade them etc. They react accordingly and several NPCs will evolve their speech the more we advance in the plot. It’s nice to listen to what they in details. You can spend a whole night just talking loll Our companions will react to our decisions but also to some of our actions. Concerning the NPCs that cannot be engaged in a deep conversation, those who pass here and there the "appearing". Even they will have more to say than what we see in rpg's. Usually in games, passers-by will have 2 or 3 lines, hello how you feel etc But here I met severals who had 10 different lines.

    Rpg:

It’s nice to be able to customize the smallest details of your character’s face even if I haven’t seen any progress on this side. Choosing them a back round with a unique advantage is also a plus. We can modify our weapons in very details and the skill tree is extremely well made with a lot of skills divided into 5 categories and each skill has many levels. More than enough to find your favorite play style and upgrading it. We are free to engage in several companies and work for them, invest our money and build our own path etc

    Exploration

This is again ahead of it's time. You can enter all the buildings, explore hundreds of planet, pick up almost everything you find, sell, buy, build etc. No mans sky has more planets but almost 0 combat and interactions. Those 2 aspects are extremely limited in NMS.

Bethesda pushes the boundaries again with a world of richness and depth. Although the feeling of the fights, the almost total absence of gore are not on point, it remains much better than their previous game. Blood effects are less pixelated, sounds effects and shooting mechanics have been greatly improved since their last games and bugs are less present for a launch version.

I would have a lot more to say but I reached 5000 characters.

They could have explored so many cool sci-fi/space settings (such as those found in shows like The Expanse, Babylon 5, Star Trek, etc.) but no they just wanted to do the most milk toast generic trash possible. A literal unread toilet scrubber could write a better setting than this garbage.

Zero effort went into planet design / procedural generation. Examples: anywhere you land on earth is a flat desert…land in the Andes? Flat desert, land in Maria trench? Flat desert. Mount Everest? Flat desert, o by the way, empire state building survived…. How.. JUST HOW. The devs know that is one of the first planets players are going to visit right… right!???

The guns all feel like TRASH and enemies are nothing but bullet sponges and little to no AI at all.

There is literally no exploration at all - just loading screens and fast traveling everywhere. (As many other reviews have pointed out).

So sad to see this game release in such a state - an embarrassment for Microsoft and Bethesda. Worst 100$ I have ever spent.

A game you think about playing after you stop playing. We should be truly grateful to experience this masterpiece.

    Hardware Specs:
    CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
    RAM: DDR 4 3200
GPU: Sapphire Pulse RX 7900 XTX

I run this game at 4k on ultra settings with FSR and VSYNC off.

    Performance: 5/10:
The performance of this game is mediocre even on good hardware, I get about 70fps average during gameplay, don't look at the reviews touting 100+ fps, they are including the loading screen fps in their averages. The game has frequent crashes to desktop, it seems it is crashing the AMD driver, as of this review, I am on the latest Adrenaline driver 23.9.1. When it is not crashing, performance is ok with minimal stuttering and loading screens are fairly quick.

    Graphics 6/10:
    - Textures are bland,
    - NPC models and facial expressions seem like a downgrade from Skyrim.
    - The lighting effects are good
    - Atmospherics are good
    - Water effects are dated.
    - Cities are well designed
    - Planets seem to be a quantity over quality approach

    Gameplay 7/10:
    - Gunplay has slightly improved over what was available in Fallout 4/76, enemies are bullet sponges though.
    - Melee is not as good as Skyrim.
    - Stealth feels like an afterthought in this game, and upgrades are locked behind grindy challenges
    - Speaking of grindy challenges: its tedious and annoying and must be in there only to artificially increase game playtime metrics.
    - Inventory management still has issues of previous Bethesda games
    - Ship building is fun, and you can definitely spend hours just customizing your ship, this seems kind of pointless though since you will spend hardly any time in your ship.
    - Loading screens for everything, its been how many years since Fallout 76 and they still cant do seamless areas?
    - You will end up fast traveling everywhere due to how annoying it is to use your ship for travel: Load screen to enter ship > cutscene to sit in captain's seat > cutscene to take off > load screen to enter orbit > cutscene to fly/jump to another planet/system > load screen for arrival to planet/system > load screen to land on planet > cut scene to land on planet > cutscene to leave captain's chair > load screen to leave ship.
    - Base building brings back bad memories of Fallout 4 outposts, but is improved.
    - Persuasion options are generic
    - Exploration is boring, there are around 5 points of interest per planet, and their is heavy asset reuse. this goes back to my quantity over quality comment. Would have preferred less more detailed planets akin to mass effect rather than 1000 boring ones.

    Story 6/10:
    - Majority of quests are either fetch quests or kill quests, would have liked to see more exploration quests since exploration was sold as a big part of the experience.
    - Main quest is pretty boring, I keep seeing other reviewers say "It gets better 20 hours in," if the story can't keep your interest in the first hour, there are major issues with it.

In summary, I returned the special edition game, to pay $100 for a game that is using an iteration of Bethesda's dated, poorly optimized engine is not worth it.

The game still has issues that have plagued the engine since Oblivion such as items randomly flying about if you get to close to them, to bodies clipping through items, to NPC pathing trouble.

Overall, I will probably re-purchase this game when it is heavily discounted, and hopefully modders will have fixed the major issues with Starfield by then, which in my opinion, sheds a bad light on Bethesda that has supposedly been working on this for 20 years, seemingly having learned nothing from their past games. Disappointing to say the least.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.
