I would rate this game a 1 primarily because of its graphics in FSR 2, but there are several significant issues that make it hard to enjoy.

I played about 11 hours of starfield. I was very bored the whole time. it felt like I was playing an illusion? it’s only loading screens and bugs. Flying isn’t really flying. the game looks like it was made in 2016. People saying “you have to play 12 hours to get into it” that is completely ridiculous come on. i’m not giving it a 0 just because it helped me waste some time.

You know there will be bugs, ranging from amusing to game breaking. You know the graphics will be rather subpar compared to contemporary titles. You know both the companion and enemy AI will be less than impressive, to put it mildly. You know performance, particularly on PC, will not be proportionate with the aforementioned subpar graphics. You know there will be an over-reliance from Bethesda on the modding community to fix these things. All these caveats are present in Starfield, but what has traditionally made these caveats tolerable in past BGS titles is the unparalleled sense of exploration that the games engender. Unfortunately that sense of exploration does not exist in Starfield.

Whether crossing the Commonwealth or traversing Tamriel's terrain you never knew what was going to be over the next hill or around the next bend. Just try to remember the sense of wonder and awe you felt in Skyrim when you first came across Blackreach. With Starfield, a game ostensibly about exploring space, that sense of exploration, wonder and awe is all but gone. Imagine if every point of interest in Fallout 4 or Skyrim was locked behind 4-5 loading screens and only reachable through fast travel (or by running several hundred meters across a barren landscape) and further imagine if virtually every point of interest was copied and pasted using the same assets, same layout and same enemy spawn points. That is Starfield's planetary exploration in a nutshell. 1,000 planets across a large section of a galaxy, all with identical mining facilities, labs, geological formations and enemies. It's soulless, boring, repetitive and lazy. Once it quickly loses its luster what you're left with is a rather boring conversation and loading screen simulator with occasional bursts of combat (which, to their credit, has improved somewhat due to help from the folks that made Doom - though this was an extremely low bar to clear). It's almost as if Todd got tired of hearing his games described as "wide as an ocean, shallow as a puddle" but rather than making those critics eat their words he double downed on that design philosophy out of spite instead.

Will the game perform better and have conspicuously missing quality of life features in a year due to the diligence of modders? Probably yes. But I have a hard time imagining modders being able to replicate that sense of exploration and adventure previous BGS games offered. Such a shame.

Imagine… a game about the vastness of space, and exploring all the intricacies of what life would be like on other planets. Some peaceful, some having you fight for your life. Utilizing cutting edge technology to zip across space and gaze upon the stars, not safely from earth through a telescope, but through the glass of your space cruiser.

Utilizing cutting edge technology to zip across space and gaze upon the stars, not safely from earth through a telescope, but through the glass of your space cruiser.

I wish I could say that was the case with this game. Instead, all exploration aspects are abruptly interrupted by loading screen after loading screen, and again after loading screen. You can’t even enter your own ship while docked without a loading screen. There’s no wonder to be had exploring the final frontier here, but rather fast traveling to a planet to explore an empty landscape that has nothing to offer.

There is combat, if you like stiff, slow, uninspiring gunplay with lackluster selection of arsenal. Theres collecting loot, like that of former titles made by Bethesda, but the combat is boring, both in space and on the ground.

The story is slow, haphazard, and uneventful. For a game with so much hype behind it, you would expect to feel drawn to play it, I personally was not. TLDR: This was not a space adventure title with combat sewn in, it was Skyrim in space with less to do and less scenery. Thank the good Lord that I didn’t pay for it and it was on Gamepass…

but hey, at least they didn’t make a 10-year saga build up only to re-use assets to create a “new” world, but that’s a story for another day…

Maybe it's a marketing campaign and Bethesda is paying poor people in some thrid world country to say good things about it, or maybe they use chatGPT. But schizoposting aside, I dont get how the sentiment on metacritic is so different to reddit.

In Starfield, your also meant to explore but you can just fast travel everywhere and entering and leaving the planet requires a loading screen and just uses a cutscene. Being able to customize your ship was one of the selling points for me but I've found no reason to engage with it because I can just fast travel everywhere and dont need to actually use the ship 95% of the time. Bethesda never develop their graphics, techniques, nor their storytelling. Game is fetch quests, lacklustre ones at that. Most worlds have copy and paste elements, lacking warmth or personality. World's often empty, or just autocreated by formula. Story is average, it's warm spoonfed faeces for us nostalgia guys.

In a space exploration game, you'd assume you can actually explore space right? Wrong. You can't actually fly except in very limited circumstances, and everything else is just a loading screen to hide the limitations of the engine. Except games that are 7 years old had seamless space to atmosphere transitions. The fast travel system completely breaks immersion.

You know that internal playtesters made all of this clear, Bethesda simply didn't care. They never go more than a few seconds to remind everyone they made Skyrim and Fallout.

Were the programmers forced to return to the office so they stopped caring? Very, very poor showing from Bethesda. Stay away.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
