Solasta: Crown of the Magister brings enough new touches to the table to make it a recommendation, especially as it comes with the promise of online co-op and a Dungeon Creation tool. There is more than enough here to keep you rolling your dice for the foreseeable future.

TheConsidering the budget this is an excellent entry into the tactical rpg genre. Its most efficient use of the D&D 5e rule set to date. The combat system and leveling system is flawless and fun, the presentation and graphics are surprisingly good. There is a severe lack of polish in the details when it comes to fleshing out the story and voice acting but considering this is a new entry, its very forgivable. Its mind boggling wizards of the coast doesn't take the direction of recreating their actual rule set with a bigger budget and instead makes mediocre D&D games. It opened the door for Solasta. I actually learned rules I had missed in my 5E tabletop games by playing this. I'm not the biggest fan of the main campaign, but the dlc and fan made modules are excellent. I'd say hundreds of fan made modules available to the series x. It's probably the best 5E game we'll get at least until Balsam gate 3. Though I think Solasta will be a better faithful adaption rules wise. Full Review »

The kludgy UI is terrible. Selecting just a single party member instead of the entire group can take multiple attempts because the control inputs aren't being properly read. Inventory is a mess, and completely bugged. It feels like you have to make a luck skill check to be able to select through your items. Sometimes you can't select beyond the first row. Other times the inventory will autoscroll to the top or bottom so you can't select anything. I can't stress enough how terrible the inventory management is. Every other time it bugs out, and you have to reorder your inventory or switch characters to get it to work. This is really basic stuff that isn't coded properly.

Crafting is a complete black box with little information, feels tacked on, is mostly annoying, and doesn't really add anything to the game. I suppose that's another homage to NWN2. The player can't craft while in the overworld map, even though the tutorial says that they can. The tutorial is actually wrong about a number of things about crafting. I recommend using a guide. There's a serious lack of information in general. Spells only give general information and don't go into specifics. I've been playing DnD forever, and I only had a vague idea of what a lot of these spells do.

The missions are serviceable, but also sloppily constructed with little QA, and often bug out. Solasta seems more like a framework for Dungeons and Dragons, with a cobbled together campaign as a tech demonstration, than an actual professional product. Going by that I would give it a 6/10 as a fairly neat product, but as a single-player experience, the bugs and and poor quality of life issues drag it down to a 4/10.
