This game is fantastic! I've probably only written one or two reviews over the many years of hanging out on Metacritic but my wife and i have had so much fun playing this game together that i needed to say something about how excellent this game is. This would be so easy to pass on, please don't! YOU'LL LOVE IT!

This game screams creativity and charm, excelling expectations when it comes to gameplay and variety! It's incredible!
Every level throws something surprising at you and it hardly ever makes it repetitive. Each new mechanic is simple to master, clever in its co-op execution and perfected by very well done level designs. You never know what to expect and once you discover something different, it always manages to feel fresh and imaginative.
Technically, It Takes Two is wonderful. Not only it plays great, with comfortable and responsive platforming controls, but it also looks beautiful. It's definitely not "net-gen-graphics", but it delighted me with nice textures, beautiful environments, good-looking monsters/characters models and high levels of charm.

As for the story, it's fine. It's not GREAT and most of the times it sounds quite silly, but it's sweet enough to keep you curious to see the end. I also love how the tale's pace transforms it into many other types of genres. For example, there's a boss fight mimicking Street Fighter and a Diablo-like level. Even the mini-games and the way you compete with your co-op partner ties into May and Cody's ordeal.

But I have to say that the writing could have been a lot better. It's fine, but it's just not remarkable and I blame the way it was told. I also felt like the game tried too hard to be funny and just failed. That annoying Book of Love, for example, is horrible. The worst thing about him is that he is crucial to the story and you're tied to him.
The ending is also quite hollow, in my opinion. It left me wanting more.
Which is weird to say, because around the final two levels I felt like It Takes Two started to drag a little. Don't get me wrong, the fun-factor and entertaining mechanics were still there, but it started to get a little bit stale. And maybe one of the main reasons for that is the boss fights. Very few of them are actually cool. They are very gimmicky, lack any type of challenge and only end up breaking the pacing of the game's fantastic level design.

And one last thing that may come off as negative is the fact that you NEED to play this game with somebody. And not just anybody, you need to communicate and work well together to reach the ending. And I know that It Takes Two's entire foundation is built around playing co-op - that's alright - but it sucks to know that many people won't play this game as it should be experienced or may never even touch it.

I didn't think I'd get to have time to finish any other game in 2021, but I'm happy that I finished It Takes Two. It was without a doubt one of the greatest co-op experiences I've ever had and definitely one of the smartest platformers I've ever played.
Just find the right person to play it with.

It takes towo is a 12 hour long co op based puzzle platforming game and this is the best co op gave ive ever played in my life.
Here you play as either May or Cody… This game does require you play with two people either online or locally, I played locally with my girlfriend, she was May, I was cody… Your daughter is sad the two of you are getting divorced, the classic magic tears happen and next thing you know, the both of you wake up in the bodies of these 2 dolls, and you have a spansish love doctor in the form of the book of love there to help you find love again, all while the two of you are trying to break the spell and get back in your bodies…. The levels area variety of puzzles, and its that variety that makes it takes two such an amazing game, as again this game is 12 hours long, variety is an absolute necessity.. and because of that, each level here almost feels like a new puzzle game itself… each time youre given a new ability or weapon for that level specifically, which also makes this game so accessible, theres no need to remember every tool or control the game throws at you, as every hour or 2, you throw that item away for a new one, and I loved that..I loved knowing that if im not liking the gameplay of a particular section, that if I just puh through, ill be given a new fresh style of gameplay and not have to deal with it anymore.. and hey.. if you are playing locally and you like one persons ability more than the others, you could just switch characters if theyre willing.. I personally played as cody the whole time… the game does do a great job at switching who gets th better ability… though I feel mostly cody is stuck with the here, let me move this or hold this while you have all the fun platforming… I felt like the cogs inside of a platforming level quite a few times while playing… an interesting idea that im sure would be a pain development wise, is the ability to chose who gets what before a level starts or the ability to switch items as the level goes on.. either to switch things up for each player, or for moments of strengths and weaknesses to play out in the actual people playing… it wasn’t that big of a deal having your ability already pre chosen based on the character you are.. but the choice would’ve been nice.. overall though I absolutely love It Takes Two.. you get a touching story, gameplay variety that revels the likes of a Mario game, and one the most if no the most amazing co op experience in gaming history… it has its moments of this just isn’t fun, and I would’ve like more action sequenes thrown in there than we got, just to break up the puzzle solving more… but it takes two is near masterpiece status, and is a must play for you and that other person in your life…
    I give It Takes Two
    a 9.5/10

Playing this coop with my friend on his PS5 was some of the best times I've ever had playing a video game. Each level keeps the gameplay different, with so many little mini worlds to discover, like the inside of a vacuum cleaner for example. There's a certain level where you must murder a stuffed animal in cold blood which was so hilarious, but so dark, it was some of the best material I've ever seen in a video game. Honestly, after completion, I'm still in utter shock. This game has really made me look at video games under a new light, and I pray, pray, pray to GOD that the creative people behind this game continue to make couch coops as refined and as engaging as this. A true masterpiece in every meaning of the word.

Offers a lot of content with ever changing challenges in a fun, non frustrating way. The only small downside for me were some questionable decisions by the two main characters, bringing your daughter to tears (not of joy) should never be a parents intention.

Exclusively a 2 player game, a husband and wife are turned into dolls and have to explore the world in a Toy Story like style fighting army squirrels and sentient toys along the way. The story can make you laugh and tear up so easily as you quickly become invested in its fantastic narrative. Different mini games or even just fun extra things to do are around every corner making the game just as fun to explore as it is to play. They find a way to mix so many genres into one including fighting, racing, and even dungeon crawling as a few of the many examples. This sense of adventure always brought me back with excitement to see what happens next, or what world I may explore. A garden? A toy castle? Even a snow globe?! I was always charmed and thrilled to see where this journey took me next.

Honestly I cannot recommend this game enough. If you have a friend or loved one you can play alongside this game will give you hours upon hours of entertainment. And if you don’t have such a person, consider buying a copy for a friend and play it online with them. It’s a worthwhile investment and one I promise you won’t regret making. Once again, this game fully deserved its Game of the Year award, and I’m happy it won it.
