Being an open-world campaign gave 343 a chance to define their own Halo game giving players a chance to explore and create their Master Chief journey through Zeta Halo. However, 343I has some shortcomings of this game from both the Multiplayer and Campaign sides. The lack of more game types/playlists at multiplayer launch is lackluster, as many have expected to have the same game modes and types such as Slayer/Swat to name a couple already available, as previous Halo games did include them at launch. Having to wait for co-op for the campaign is such a big disappointment as having an open-world halo game, having it co-op would have made the experience more enjoyable with friends. The leveling system for the battle pass and cosmetic is such an annoyance. Having points pop up during a match for doing great than getting just 50+ (after your 6 matches, after the hotfix) makes trying to play the objective and doing well, and getting the same as the bottom player in the match loses the incentive of me continue to play more multiplayer. There are plenty that 343I will have to fix for this game to be as great as it can be, but I have to give them praise for where they did well on it. Expand

Hands down, the worst game of the year. Uninspired and half-baked. The campaign is dull and the multiplayer is an absolute waste of time. Trash game. Trash monetization. Trash development considering how long this was in development. The campaign reaffirmed to me that 343 isn’t anywhere near adequate to handle this franchise. The mechanics, shooting, and sandbox feel is mostly there. However, 343 has only taken mega steps backward from the groundwork Bungie has laid.

I like when dev try new things, and they nailed it with the perfect combination of open world and linear storytelling. I have to say the metascore (according to me) seems a bit low when you compare to H4 and H5 metascore. But for each year in gaming, the harder it becomes to get a high metascore, I belive.

Halo 5 ended on a cliffhanger. The Guardians had been unleashed upon the galaxy by a rogue Cortana, Chief was on Sanghelios and the Infinity was on the run as the Giardians shut down entire worlds.
Halo Infinite opens and... all of that has been resolved, off screen, back whenever. LMAO! What?! Cortana is dead (?), the Guardians have, uh, well who knows. The Banished are on Zeta Halo now. How did they get there? Who knows! How'd they get off the Ark? Who cares! What happened to the Spirit of Fire and her crew? Wheres Blue Team? Wheres the Arbiter? Who cares? 343 doesn't.

Oh and the Infinity and maybe all of her crew are dead now because reboot. Everything that could have been exciting or interesting either happened off screen or are relegated to collectibles.
Most previous characters are dead/absent because 343i is stunningly incompetent at telling a coherent story, or even resolving one. 343 is, AGAIN, telling and not showing. 343 has learned NOTHING from their mistakes with Halo 5.

You and Bro-hammer have a lot of bad dialogue as you single handedly take on the Banished forces on this Halo ring. You also get an annoying version of Cortana. Woketana, I guess. Some "Ghual (Destiny 2, remember?)" level villains. Theres a lot of teasing with very little that is of signifigance, story wise. 6 years, for this. Lol

    GRAPHICS

This stinks like Anthem. Half a billion dollars and six years and THIS is the best they could do? A game that looks and plays worse than Halo 5, with a campiagn that clocks in somewhere between 6- 10 hours? Did I mention this looks worse than Halo 5, a six year old game?
Seriously, fire up Halo 5 and go to any location that has foliage (or compare anything really). Look at the difference, its shocking how poorly put together Infinite is on every level. $10 says this game was thrown together in a year.
It looks decent but you could fire up an FPS game from 2016 and get better visuals than you'll get here. Plants pop in and out (not at distance, it'll wink in and out right in front of you), materials look flat. The lighting is worst in series, alien weapons like the Needler no longer cast their own light (they did in 5...) as well as explosive barrels often randomly generating light.
Texture work is decent but its nothing exciting. And yet another Series X game that doesnt have ray tracing (remember when that was a promised feature?), not that it would help much. Much like the rest of the game, its decent.

    GAMEPLAY

Remember the excitement of an open ring world and the possibilities therein? You know what they actually did with it? Far Cry Infinite lol. This is the most low-effort, copy paste formula I have ever seen. There's a grapple hook though. Haven't seen one of those... since Advanced Warfare ;)

The "open" world is bland, empty, lifeless and boring with cookie cutter enemy camps/strongholds that you can clear out or... not, I guess. Every time you do a campaign mission is sends you underground into a linear level. Lmao! Why even have it?

The open world is literally just a check mark for the back of the box. No loot, no loot drops, no exciting set pieces on the surface, no character builds, "progression" thats as deep as a puddle and a mixed bag of weapons ranging from decent to crap. No replaying campaign mission without a completely new save. No co-op, no forge.

AI is laughable. Simplistic is an understatement and increasing difficulty just adds to their health and reduces yours. Its fun, it's just not worth $60 when other games do it better.
    SOUND:
Good, but Halo 5 is still better there too.

    PROS:
+ Combat loop is fun, for the most part
+ Runs smooth on Xbox (runs like crap on PC)
+ Lots of potential for future updates

    CONS:
    - Open world is bland, lifeless and boring. Very little to do there beyond Far Cry style side missions.
    - AI is possibly worst in series
    - Short campaign, its should be roughly 6-10 hours for most players.
    - Convoluted, underwhelming story
    - Some truly garbage tier weapons
    - Graphics are subpar for this "12Tf monster" console. Halo 5 looks better, in every way.
    - Without dynamic encounters, becomes very repetitive
    - No CO-OP
    - No forge
    - No replaying campaign missions without starting a new save file (seriously 343, WTF?! lol)
    - No loot or loot drops
    - No long term "progression" or character builds.
    - Cookie cutter game design, ripped from Far Cry series.
    - On Steam the campaign is listed as "DLC". This was done to lock people out of the refund system (if you played more than 2 hours of the free pvp). Thats LOW, even for Microsoft. Also shows the level of confidence they had in it.

Been playing Halo since CE launched. This is not worth $60. This is NOT a AAA $60 full release game, its a Game Pass game. it shows in the lack of quality that Halo deserves. Strike three, 343i. You couldn't get a decent, finished game out the door with 6 years and half a billion $. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Halo Infinite is an fantastic game. I have waited 6 years for a new Halo experience. And what an experience it is. Game is super tight and the story telling is really god and especially the sound design is superb.

As an old gamer I love the setup where you don't have to be a twitch shooter but can win even if you don't the the first shot in.

I marathon the game as soon as it released. The developers said it was made with normal difficulty in mind, so that was my choice and I just rushed it to see the story and then restart on legendary and obtaining the 100%.

I marathon the game as soon as it released. The developers said it was made with normal difficulty in mind, so that was my choice and I just rushed it to see the story and then restart on legendary and obtaining the 100%.

The first missions are very promising. Actually, the first one encourages you to use the Banished weapons, and you're almost certainly falling in love with the mangler feeling on the enmies and the grappling hook (which those who were already engaged with the multiplayer were already loving it). This level gives some Halo CE vibes (traveling a gigantic, oppressive spaceship that starts collapsing) and ends in a glorious escape when everything is exploding, physics do their magic (which was a concern for me as the multiplayer doesn't feature much physically affected props). All of this gave me Halo 3 vibes, which is also good.

The second mission features a forerunner interior, where you can definitely relive Halo 3's artstyle and some rooms that definitely recall Halo 2. Also, the Banished are all over the place, they've made modifications on it and the level design is also pretty nice.

Then you go to the open world. Whereas it isn't innovative, it is very engaging as the world is just beautiful, full of objectives and cool stuff to see. A kind of shrine here, rests of a battle there, and you're mostly going crazy with the grappling hook and its physics.

But the story and main quests take a big hit.

I don't see a problem with only featuring a biome. I don't see a a problem with only featuring Banished and forerunner interiors. It could be OK if the level design kept the creativity and visible effort in the first two levels. But it doesn't. You will find yourself going through almost exact cloned rooms all over again in the same mission. Symetric rooms and areas where the level design efforts dissappear. Kilometers of clonic rooms. Hundreds or thousands of enemies in them. Lots of moments of loosing your time to go to another clonic room to get some batteries to open a door. Those levels feel uninspired and generic.

The artsyle is great and that's pretty much what saves the day. Technologically I see something big here, the day-night system features a full realtime illumination that's being really underappreciated. And it definitely looks beautiful. But then again, it's not all about the environments. You need some variety in the combat. The enemies are cool, have some variety, but there's a obvious lack in more weapons, more vehicles, and more everything.

About snipers, there's only the human one, and you don't find it around usually. There are lots of classic weapons missing. There are lots of classic vehicles missing. If you arrive expecting a full sequel on Halo 5's events and weapon/vehicle amount, you're gonna be disappointed. It feels anachronic for the Banished to have wiped out the UNSC and the prometheans, and the biggest combat vehicle they have is the wraith. No Halo Wars 2 crazy stuff and sadly no scarabs. The humans are also lacking some classics, like the gauss hog. And Halo 2's SMGs. And Halo 3's Spartan Laser. And Halo 4's electromagnetic cannon. Etc.

The only logical explanation I can find on this: They just wanted to make this totally feel like a reboot. Like a remake of the "discover the Halo universe" experience Halo CE delivered 20 years ago. And then in a couple years release a sequel campaign that effectively brings back Halo 2's gauss hog, covenant carbine, maybe the spectre. Make Infinite's campaigns a remakish experience. The story also feels like a way to make peace with some of not so beloved events happened in Halo 4 and 5, and a prologue for the real menaces to be faced on the next campaigns.

The core gameplay is just so, so good. The sequels will be noticeably better if they keep Infinite's first campaign quality, but with more vehicles, more enemies and more weapons. I would love upgrades for the AI, but I don't expect much in that front (and honestly, it would be the icing on the cake but it's not exactly necessary). But if they want a really good campaign with levels worth replaying, they really, really need better level designs. Keep the first two missions level design quality as a minimum. I'm remembering now a detail in the first level: Some room which's floor ground was flooded with acid and you have to cross it jumping on the furniture. There's nothing like that in the game again. It's honestly surprising that there're no platforming areas given how satisfactory is using the grapplehook.

I'm going around the bush. In conclusion: I hope they keep the good work, improve the level design and add tons of stuff with the next gampaign.

PS About the multiplayer: It's really good, but it needs more content ASAP. It needs netcode fixes. It needs a more rewarding experience and not locking so much behind paywalls. The BattlePass only gives a fraction of Reach's original armory, no possibility to get the next battlepass for free.

There are a few things missing that hold this game back from being a 10. Forge, and SP Co-Op are to be added later. As well as additional maps and multiplayer modes. But what IS there is near perfection. This game manages to stay true to its roots, but also feel very fresh.

If the open-world concept had been better utilized and if the writers had added more interesting characters to the story, Infinite could have easily been one of the best Halo games ever. The shootouts are highly entertaining and the open world brings new tactical possibilities. The multiplayer is just as good, being slightly faster than before. [Issue#317]

Halo is back to its best with Halo Infinite, tight controls, and seriously thirst-quenching gunplay that feels so intuitively satisfying. Traversal has been improved hugely by the addition of the grappleshot, allowing Master Chief to zip around at speed, as well as adding a unique element for multiplayer matches. A particular dampener has to be directed at the online multiplayer, which is riddled with cheaters, but, if they were to be removed then the multiplayer offers a solid free-to-play experience that is fast and frantic. Halo Infinite, alongside a number of other Xbox first-party titles is a great addition to Xbox Game Pass, and it is certainly a marquee game that warrants a subscription to the service.

There’s not much to do in the open world, but thankfully, it doesn’t play a big role either. Infinite mostly sticks to what makes Halo great: first-person action. Smart level design, great mobility mechanics like grappling hook, and good AI make for some really memorable moments. [Issue#258, p.42]
