The game has too many technical quirks and is nothing more than Dark Souls with open world.
After all, it's more beginner-friendly since you can run away from enemies, and they don't chase you forever.

I can't rate this less than 7 because there's clearly a quality game here, but the impenetrable design and frustrating experience makes this a pretty miserable experience. After 20 hours in Limgrave and increasingly resorting to online guides to find a way to progress, I've had enough.

I just played Sekiro, and damn, that game is incredible. It's challenging, with a great story, and visceral combat. Which is everything this game isn't, so going from that to this was just jarring.

Combat in this game consists of rolling around like runaway tire while bosses spam attacks, and then occasionally getting a smack or two in. The fact that defense still consists of the same crap dark souls had 10 years ago is lame. All an agility character can do is roll around like a moron. Why didn't they at least try and put sekiro's parry in? Why isn't there a smaller step dodge that's actually useful? All you can do is roll 5 times in a row, then get one hit in.

The story is, well, vague. Meh. That's all I have to say. Coming from Sekiro's story to this was disappointing.

In past souls type games by Fromsoft, you'd adventure a while, and encounter a boss, and get stuck on it a long time then finally have that "hell yeah" moment when you beat it. Just coming from Sekiro, each boss was exhilarating. Overcoming boss enemies in this game sucks ass. Why? The density. Everywhere you throw a stone there's a goddamn boss. It's so tedious. There's no pacing, it's all just boss enemies everywhere all over the world that you'll die to 5+ times, and then actual turbo bosses that you'll die on 30+ times in the dungeon areas.

There's another issue with combat. In the open world, fighting on the horse is optimal nearly all the time. Like 99% of the time. In a game where death is so punishing, it would be stupid to not do the most optimal thing. It's also optimal to just run past and completely ignore the existence of a lot of enemies. The reward for killing them just isn't worth the time. Who the hell designs a game where you're just supposed to bypass things people put weeks of work into designing?

The open world is good I guess, if a bit monochromatic, with a few exception areas that are incredible to behold. Some areas are really fun to explore. Some are awful and incredibly aggravating. Fast travel is a thing. A big thing. There are bonfires every 10 feet. And you'll be fast traveling between them all the time because of the tedium factor involved. I really dislike fast travel like this but whatever.

Overall I'd just call this game amazing, annoying, tedious, and fun, all at the same time. It's definitely not a 10/10. It's dark souls with a bigger (and less good, in my opinion) world. It'll give you a good 150, 200 hours of playtime. I really wish they at least tried to innovate on the crappy and dated dark souls combat, instead of making us roll more than a stoner in a joint factory.

It’s a mixed bag – not very newcomers friendly nor satisfying for veterans.
A lot of n000bs friendly mechanics (summons, bleed, assists, too closely placed “bonfires”) ruined the experience.

Those From Software “lifehacks” gone too far – now You’re not even forced to talk to NPC, to get a map icon info who he is…for example it completely ruined first encounter with Blaidd.
Game is vast and You’re hyped at the beginning – first area (Limgrave) has the best environmental structure (dragon, dungeons, mini-boss, big cart, camp).
Landscape is immersive and for the moment I was feeling epic adventure vibe.
Sadly, this bait for beta access reviewers is going down very fast – too big and empty, stretched without common sense, not rewarding for your time invested…
Dragons are too easy, quests are too complicated for open world, crafting unnecessary (you can’t craft weapons nor armors), legendary weapons are easier to upgrade than normal, dungeons too small, framerate at 35-50 fps, pop-in everywhere, unbalanced weapons (colossal zweihander damage and stagger equal to claymore…), etc…
    After 150 hours I’m bored. It’s a promise unfullfiled.
Elden Ring is very overrated and not a masterpiece.
From Software – You can’t put souls series into mainstream.
You sell 12M copies but people are angry and this 7,5 Metacritic rating is VERY accurate.

But the the major bosses are just very, very unfair. I'm a FromSoft veteran who's completed the King's Field and Dark Souls series, Bloodborne and Sekiro multiple times. This game isn't difficult like Sekiro or Bloodborne difficult. Those bosses were challenging, but very do-able. The problem I have, is that the majority of bosses in Elden Ring just spam attacks absolutely non-stop with infinite FP and stamina, leaving an absolute minuscule window to get hits in. Soloing this game is nigh-on impossible, especially late game when the difficulty is rammed even higher and suddenly.

These games, which heavily punish the player for mindless aggression, Miyazaki is quite happy to not apply that rule to his AI. And it proves how BS a boss is when noone even drops down co-op summon signs, because they don't want to go through that certain boss again.

I'm not saying it needs to be made easier, just a little evenly balanced. But then maybe try and embrace a wider audience by adding a slightly easier mode? All you need to do really is keep runes on death, that's it. But that's just me.

Rated it a 7 out of 10, because outside of the major bosses, this is a fun game, which I enjoyed with great exploration and design.

This game is NOT accessible to everyone despite what the paid reviewers have said. I should have known as most content creators are just looking to get paid, not actually be helpful in any way.

I had some experience with From games going in. I did almost beat the base game Dark Souls 3. I did play a bit of Bloodborne. So it’s not like I came in blind or unsuspecting. But watching footage and listening to “reviewers” say this game is accessible gave me hope that maybe this would be a more fun version of the previous titles I played through. Nope. This is just as painful as any other souls game. And what’s worse is I convinced a friend to pick it up thinking that and he had zero experience with these kind of games and basically ally wasted $60.

I’ve put around 30 hours into the game. I’ve over-leveled myself because I just wanted to experience the game and the world in a more casual fashion. I don’t care to be a pro at this game. The open world is fantastic. It’s one of the best open world maps I’ve ever seen. Extremely dense. No place is the same. Packed with stuff to actually find and see. It’s filled with caves and dungeons and open world bosses everywhere. I can’t even count the amount of enemy types. So the world, the combat, the exploration, are all top notch as usual.

But it’s brutal out there. I often find myself dying still in a few shoots to almost anything. Arrows and rocks are buried from across the map from enemies that will destroy you. Trying to get out of combat just to use your map again is tedious. I guess I expected the open world part to be more casual and to have a decent way for leveling but this is not the case. Glitch farming methods are the only real way you can even level in this game and it’s no wonder everyone cheeses them.

Questing is absurd. I understand and accept that this is how From does it. I’m not here to try and change it. But doing quests is insanely confusing, and I just end up watching guides because I don’t want to spend hundreds of hours and multiple play throughs to do them. Many quests can be missed.

Bosses themselves haven’t been too bad depending on play style. But again, I over-leveled with a broken farming method and play a Mage so I’ve got range and a general OPness to me. But even at that you still die in a couple shots if not careful. So anyone who thinks they can over-level to the point of 1 shoting bosses or tanking all their attacks will be let down. I hate when gaming companies do this — lure you into a false sense of being powerful. I think that happens here. Even though you can get more powerful in ER than any other game they’ve made, you won’t really feel it and still die a ton.

I think a 7 is very appropriate for this title. There’s still plenty more to say, both good and bad, but I digress. It’s a good game. It’s not game if the year. It’s not game if the decade. It’s just a really solid game from a really solid developer. It’s just a game that’s not meant for everyone, despite how much I hate that statement and think it’s a terrible one. If your not a Souls player and lover, this game is not a entry to it.

There also no quest list or journal, no map pin system, no hand holding of any kind which is kind of fun and kind of irritating at the same time. I like some bit of structure, it doesn't need to be Bethesda level of hand holding though. It also had a fun aspect to it when you're not repeating the same attempt for the 12th time. I played some of the other dark souls and blood borne games when I was younger, but didn't play them very long due to the difficulty. Now that I'm in my 30s I don't mind sticking to it longer but without that historical Souls franchise experience, it is very difficult and very frustrating. I've been playing since launch and still haven't beat the first boss. Watch video, gotten advise and still can't get it done. I would have liked to try it coop but ya know it didn't work for days and I still haven't gotten to try it. From what I've seen, it's really not that dynamic of a coop anyway so I'm weary. Overall the game is fun ut is very frustrating not just for difficulty but the broken online mode, meh graphical details, lack of basic features, and crazy clunky fighting mechanics. Basically, if you're not already a Souls die hard with a clear bias for this type of game, this game is just good but not good enough. Too bad the critics couldn't see past their bias. Expand

The exploration in the game is by far the only reason it gets as high a score from me personally. Its super fun to explore and find new places and enemies to kill but this game is so repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive. Boss battles are the same, enemies everywhere are the same. It's a great step in a the right direction but if you're going to open your world map then you got to have a reason to live in it, it has to be an interesting place for me to ROLE PLAY. Not overly difficult if you level up and explore the world for better gear and weapons, but why else would you be playing an RPG. Combat is simple and fair most of the time and by fair i mean if you get hit you get punished, that's what these games are about. Sadly because that mechanic is so old and stale once you master moving and taking small bites you can really own this game. Its good but not as good as some other RPG'S over the years. Like Dragons Lair in the arcades as a kid a lot of people got pissed off the game was so hard and wanted their Quarters back. But if you just learned the patterns to the dungeons the Quarters started to go really far. There are 2 Mohg's too, which really doesn't make since as he's a pinnacle boss. - Much of the story just doesn't make
    Pros

    - The amount of reused bosses and assets in some of the the side dungeons / areas is fairly lazy. There are 2 Mohg's too, which really doesn't make since as he's a pinnacle boss.
    - Much of the story just doesn't make sense and feels low effort to make the player interpret much of what is going on.
    - The 'toughest boss' in the game's entire gimmick is waterfowl dance, the most unfun to react to ability in the game.

Im not a souls fan, but the game is honestly mid for me, I find it confusing, difficult, and not that fun at all. But I do love the art style of this game!! Even so, I'm not upset that this game won GOTY 2022 because it makes sense and it was obvious because when I first heard about this game, it was when it won most anticipated game in 2020-2021 and I was like WHAT IS THIS GAME?? First off, I love the unforgiving combat system typical of souls-like games. It's a steep learning curve but rewarding when you finally get it down. The visuals are fantastic and at first I enjoyed exploring the open world. In the end, I found the world too open and too repetitive. I can see why some people may love it, but for me I just found it good and not great in the end.

Despite some annoying performance issues, Elden Ring is a masterpiece. The combat, enemy variety, exploration, music, and open world are top notch. I’ve been playing it daily across all platforms alongside other games all month, and look forward to doing that all year as I try new builds, help friends, and try to do everything I want in this triumph of a video game.

Elden Ring rewards your curiosity in many ways, be it items, runes or a pathway to another area, but mostly it’s a story to tell your friends when you are sharing tales around the bonfire. It does not force feed tutorials down your throat, but instead it leans far the opposite way by not telling you much at all and lets you explore and find things out on your own. There is no true quest log, no points of interest on a map or no arrows pointing you in the right direction, so there is a good chance you’ll miss some of the best caves and areas of the game. Because of all of this, Elden Ring is forcing me to find all of that out on my own and it is one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. I will continue to explore the Land Between for many hours to come. I’m just not in a hurry.

Elden Ring manages to draw the player into a fascinating world for many hours, with refined gameplay that fits perfectly with the freedom granted to the player. A sumptuous but imperfect work, which fails to completely overcome some of the historical flaws of Hidetaka Miyazaki's productions. Flaws that, however, can't diminish the scope of a masterpiece destined to leave an indelible mark on the videogame world and to set new standards for the souls-like and open-world genres.
