Extremely hard, no story. But love it as there's no pop ups telling you to get your credit card out to buy something. Thanks for just making a game and not trying to get every penny I have

First off, I love the unforgiving combat system typical of souls-like games. It's a steep learning curve but rewarding when you finally get it down. The visuals are fantastic and at first I enjoyed exploring the open world. In the end, I found the world too open and too repetitive. I can see why some people may love it, but for me I just found it good and not great in the end.

Im not a souls fan, but the game is honestly mid for me, I find it confusing, difficult, and not that fun at all. But I do love the art style of this game!! This game is incredible; the devs added an absurd amount of content, all of which is masterfully implemented into a visually, audibly, and narratively beautiful world, but they forgot one thing--they forgot to make it particularly fun.

Good game for the dark souls genre. But ultimately a gimmick riddled experience where they tie the players hands in ridiculous way, thinking that’s what fun is. Does not deserve game of the year for sure. The best part of the game is the lore/story, and after 400 hours later (6play throughs) I still had to find a YouTube video explains 50% of the lore.

It's an okay game. Dare I say, even good. But it's not the second coming of christ that a lot of people are making it out to be.

I just played Sekiro, and damn, that game is incredible. It's challenging, with a great story, and visceral combat. Which is everything this game isn't, so going from that to this was just jarring.

Combat in this game consists of rolling around like runaway tire while bosses spam attacks, and then occasionally getting a smack or two in. The fact that defense still consists of the same crap dark souls had 10 years ago is lame. All an agility character can do is roll around like a moron. Why didn't they at least try and put sekiro's parry in? Why isn't there a smaller step dodge that's actually useful? All you can do is roll 5 times in a row, then get one hit in.

The story is, well, vague. Meh. That's all I have to say. Coming from Sekiro's story to this was disappointing.

In past souls type games by Fromsoft, you'd adventure a while, and encounter a boss, and get stuck on it a long time then finally have that "hell yeah" moment when you beat it. Just coming from Sekiro, each boss was exhilarating. Overcoming boss enemies in this game sucks ass. Why? The density. Everywhere you throw a stone there's a goddamn boss. It's so tedious. There's no pacing, it's all just boss enemies everywhere all over the world that you'll die to 5+ times, and then actual turbo bosses that you'll die on 30+ times in the dungeon areas.

There's another issue with combat. In the open world, fighting on the horse is optimal nearly all the time. Like 99% of the time. In a game where death is so punishing, it would be stupid to not do the most optimal thing. It's also optimal to just run past and completely ignore the existence of a lot of enemies. The reward for killing them just isn't worth the time. Who the hell designs a game where you're just supposed to bypass things people put weeks of work into designing?

The open world is good I guess, if a bit monochromatic, with a few exception areas that are incredible to behold. Some areas are really fun to explore. Some are awful and incredibly aggravating. Fast travel is a thing. A big thing. There are bonfires every 10 feet. And you'll be fast traveling between them all the time because of the tedium factor involved. I really dislike fast travel like this but whatever.

Overall I'd just call this game amazing, annoying, tedious, and fun, all at the same time. It's definitely not a 10/10. It's dark souls with a bigger (and less good, in my opinion) world. It'll give you a good 150, 200 hours of playtime. I really wish they at least tried to innovate on the crappy and dated dark souls combat, instead of making us roll more than a stoner in a joint factory.

Biggest difference between other souls games is the huge size of the map. That means they had to put a lot of filler in to the map to accommodate for a full open world. This game has more in common than latest assassin's creed games than to souls/bourne games. What a disappointment...

There is loot and weapons and armor galore, several different spirit ashes to find and use, which are essentially NPC's that you summon to help you in battle, and numerous different talismans which give you boosts to different abilities and stats. The freedom to truly mold you character into the type of fighter you want them to be is superb. The gameplay is mostly solid, and teaming up with a friend in co-op is a whole lot of fun. The game is gorgeous and the world is very immersive at times. The ability to sort of create your own stories within the game and talk about it with your friends is a highlight for sure. I'll never forget discussing strategies for certain areas and bosses with a couple of my friends that also play the game. Cons- Terrible camera angles at times. I don't know how many times I can legit blame dying on awful angles while fighting enemies in confined areas simply because I couldn't see them due to the camera positions. The targeting system when there are multiple enemies gets frustrating, and as fun as co-op is, they make it way too complicated to summon a friend. It seems ridiculous that I have to go farm plants to craft the items I need just to play cooperatively. Let me send them an invite and roam the Lands Between at will. I don't like that Torrent cannot be used at all during co-op either. It makes traversing the vast open world with friends seem more like a task than a good time. Story... Yeah. I just don't find it interesting. Not only is it really vague, but it is also bland and essentially non-existent at most times. There isn't much to keep me going other than the thrill of the next kill and a desire to explore. The NPC's are all stoic and dull, and lack personality. You feel no connection to anyone in the game. As far as RPG's go, this is at the bottom of the list in that aspect. I also dislike the total lack of hubs. No populated areas, whatsoever. Not one single town or city with any signs of life. That is more of a personal preference than a knock on the game, because that is obviously intentional to leave this type of thing out, but still- It makes the huge open world seem very bleak, lifeless, and empty. Several bosses are repeated, as are dungeons (outside of legacy dungeons and the main bosses) and that also eventually begins detracting from the overall experience. All in all, it's solid. I have plenty of gripes and opinions on what I think would make it a much better game, but that is all subjective, personal preference. If you are a fan of Souls games, you will most likely love this one. If you are used to open worlds such as The Elder Scrolls, Witcher 3, GTA, Red Dead, etc... You may feel like I do. Expand

Despite some annoying performance issues, Elden Ring is a masterpiece. The combat, enemy variety, exploration, music, and open world are top notch. I’ve been playing it daily across all platforms alongside other games all month, and look forward to doing that all year as I try new builds, help friends, and try to do everything I want in this triumph of a video game.

Elden Ring rewards your curiosity in many ways, be it items, runes or a pathway to another area, but mostly it’s a story to tell your friends when you are sharing tales around the bonfire. It does not force feed tutorials down your throat, but instead it leans far the opposite way by not telling you much at all and lets you explore and find things out on your own. There is no true quest log, no points of interest on a map or no arrows pointing you in the right direction, so there is a good chance you’ll miss some of the best caves and areas of the game. Because of all of this, Elden Ring is forcing me to find all of that out on my own and it is one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. I will continue to explore the Land Between for many hours to come. I’m just not in a hurry.

Elden Ring manages to draw the player into a fascinating world for many hours, with refined gameplay that fits perfectly with the freedom granted to the player. A sumptuous but imperfect work, which fails to completely overcome some of the historical flaws of Hidetaka Miyazaki's productions. Flaws that, however, can't diminish the scope of a masterpiece destined to leave an indelible mark on the videogame world and to set new standards for the souls-like and open-world genres.
