Eclipse is more of a bridge that takes us closer to the end than a decisive expansion. Even so, Bungie’s mastery is evident in the impressive aesthetics of Neomuna and in a campaign of very high level of quality.

The new expansion, Lightfall, is a very flashy and entertaining piece of content that offers something different than usual in Destiny 2. Despite its little narrative, the cinematics and characters it introduces are very interesting, and hopefully it works ideally as a link with the next and latest expansion for Destiny 2.

Destiny 2: Lightfall is a step in the right direction in terms of offering a challenge that lives up to Bungie's legacy.

Destiny 2: Lightfall is an expansion with two opposing aspects, that can be seen as the mirror image of the previous The Witch Queen. Weak in narrative content, it shows its best in perfecting the gaming experience, understood as that set of tools to fully enjoy the potential of our guardians. The hope now is that Bungie will put an extra effort into delivering Seasons full of content and capable of keeping the attention high towards the end of a saga a bit… paracausal.

While it can feel more like a proof of concept for some new mechanics than a vital piece of the experience, Lightfall is another reason to come back to Destiny 2, which proves it’s still a top-tier shooter more than half a decade into its life.

As is the case with the Destiny of late, this is a three-steps-forward-one-step-back situation.

Destiny 2's Lightfall expansion doesn't make a good first impression, but beneath a threadbare story that relies on an exasperatingly fuzzy motivation for your Guardian, it still feels mechanically satisfying to dive into. Comparing it to the standard of excellence that 2022's The Witch Queen saga established only exposes the numerous shortcomings of Lightfall, and that's a shadow that the next year of seasonal content will need to step out of if Bungie wants to develop the expansion into something more than a middle-of-road entry that stumbles toward a final showdown that has been a decade in the making.

Destiny 2: Lightfall is a disappointing expansion with a campaign that falls flat on its face, an underwhelming new destination, and only a few new standout activities to take on. That said, Strand and the new Tormentor enemy are fantastic new additions to the sandbox, some of the endgame activities and added difficulty make for a sweaty, memorable time, and per usual, the raid is a complete blast (even if it isn’t their best). No doubt Lightfall’s shortcomings are made more painful by immediately following The Witch Queen and its strong post-launch updates, which felt like Destiny 2 had finally overcome its storytelling woes and charted out a promising future for itself. After playing Lightfall, perhaps too fittingly given its name, that future doesn’t look quite as bright.

Destiny 2: Lightfall is a let down. The blessing is that the gunplay and action are as good as ever, but stupid difficulty spikes and poor writing make Lightfall a chore to play.

Destiny 2: Lightfall has been a great experience thus far. The gameplay additions, the Quality of Life improvements, and the music and sound design are all best in class. The Lightfall campaign is going to be divisive for a long time to come and I think that’s okay. Its storytelling doesn’t live up to the Witch Queen’s standards, but the level design is top-notch. I loved the characters we met along the way, the post-campaign content, and Neomuna itself. I’m looking forward to the day-one raid coming up very soon and to see what else might happen in this world after it has been beaten by whichever team might be the World’s First. I still have some things I’d like to wrap up in Destiny 2: Lightfall before I deliver my final verdict, but right now, I’m having just as much fun as I ever have in Destiny.

Bungie has created a system of brilliant psychological trickery where they pad their activity numbers by forcing you to do activities youBungie has created a system of brilliant psychological trickery where they pad their activity numbers by forcing you to do activities you don't want to do in order to obtain the things you do. Then we you obtain the things you want, they come up with a way to keep you from using them. They force you to grind "seasons" of monotonous content over and over in order to level up, just to take it all away and make you start over next season. When they see anyone enjoying anything, they swoop in and make it less enjoyable. When they see anyone feeling like their character is powerful, they swoop in with a knee-jerk reaction that punishes that power three times more than it needed. Light fall continues this circle of craptastic mind-screwery, but does so while making literally everything in the game worse and even less fun. Seriously, this is terrible. The story is dull, the characters are goofy, the new build system is a regression, the nerfs are not properly thought out, and now power level is only a time gate for "must be this tall to ride" activities.

Was this ever supposed to be fun?

if your a new or returning player its okay its fresh but if your a hardcore player honestly not worth it your money is better spent somewhereif your a new or returning player its okay its fresh but if your a hardcore player honestly not worth it your money is better spent somewhere else like dead space or hogwarts legacy or something, i made my friend buy this expansion and i feel really bad about it cuz im not even enjoying it, im genuinely disappointed and i feel scammed the marketing team made it seem like you'd be swinging like spider-man or deku on tall cyberpunk skyscrapers but all we got is a budget lego town i really do i feel like i got scammed and honestly the campaing just wasnt fun for me it i really dont wanna do em 2 more times on my titain and hunter its just so tedious, the exotics are boring still no new crucible maps and modes. i honestly don't feel like this game has a bright future anymore its so repetitive boring and not fun, at this point ill be playing catch up and do other stuff. sometimes i feel like this game wouldve been better with activison or if d1 didnt lose its game director idk getting side tracked sorry, maybe when the final shape comes out ill turn a 180 but until then im disappointed and sad ill make my score a 3 cuz some things i enjoyed like strand its aight ill still stick with shadebinder tho but ill have to make a good build to see its potential, oh yeah and they wayyy oversimplified mods now i hate it, i think i need a break and do my other hobies. this is one of thoes games where it might be better to take frequinte breaks or its just gonna feel really repeative.
final thoughts. disapointing, made me make a account on metacritic and rant. strand is okay missions are not fun enough to replay, osris was cool, weird that there werent any other characters, soooo many unanswerd question felt very dissatisfying, basically no new legendary weapons, warmind cells were removed rip, and yeah hopfully the future seasons make the game better but for now the games future seems dark and pleak.

Story is so bad. The worst expansion in destiny history.strand is so weak and overall character feels so weak now. No build crafting any more
