Not the best yakuza game, but keeps the great storytelling and is for sure a great Way to Handle your time

After playing 0, 1, 2 this game was absolutely a huge let down. The map feels cheap as does the new interface. Feels like Kiryu is walking around in tap dance shoes that were dipped in cement. Only thing saving this game is the storyline which is the only reason I finished it. I tried to ignore all side missions as I felt no incentive to deal with them.

And the new system to power up the character is garbage. Huge HUGE letdown. Not a good thing when you spend most of your time shaking your head and wishing it would just end.

It feels like Yakuza 3 is the black sheep of the family, as far as I know.
Oddly enough, this was the one that clawed me back to the series.

Oddly enough, this was the one that clawed me back to the series.

I'm not gonna lie, this game's definitely not the easiest one to like, but I found it amusingly charming.
For starters, the time you spend in Okinawa felt like a welcome change of pace. The character development Kiryu went through in the past three games paid off and it's nice to see him doing things other than the same repetitive stuff he was doing before, as slow and mundane as his new activities are.
And while we're threading its slow beginnings, we're presented with well-written dialogues and a nice detailed story, with an amazing build-up. Characters are remarkable, chapters are filled with thrilling moments and little to no **** aside from a few leaden points, like the heinous chapter 10.

Overall, Yakuza 3 has a great story. Surprisingly, I think this is the best time I've had with a Yakuza game ever since the perfect Yakuza 0. Especially since this is the first game in the series that didn't feel overly bloated. Being short and somehow a bit more linear than the others did the formula well.
Not to mention the amazing soundtrack, fun mini-games, intense chase sequences and the series' signature hilarious side quests. I mean, come on, Kiryu has a blog now... how can they keep coming up with stuff on point like that?

Unfortunately, Yakuza seems to insist in past mistakes.
The fighting in these games are usually make it or break it and this one found the balance not to ruin the whole journey, but it's still riddled with many flaws. Unbalanced boss fights that spam the same moves, Kiryu falls for anything, enemies that rarely gets stunned and the overuse of blocking. It's extremely annoying, as usual.
In addition to the fighting system's shortcomings, I felt like a few of Kamurocho's tropes are becoming stale at this point and those cliches can even be seen in its good writing. Like, why EVERYTIME after a battle, somebody HAS to enter the scene and shoot/kill a character? This has to stop!
And what the **** happened with the dash button? If they included it in the chase sequences, why not give it to us eventually?

I get why people don't like Yakuza 3, but I think the reason they hate it is the reason I like it so much.
It's not refreshing in any way, but I feel like it's a step in the right direction towards the end of Kiryu's tale.

    + Some coole side quests
    - Very lame beginning, spending hours helping kids with their stupid problems. Its like an orphanage-simulator until chapter 5(!) and again in Chapter 10. Very much to read, nearly no cutscenes
    - Many sidequeats dont offer a waypoint/marker so you are mostly complitly lost where to go without opening the menu and read the quest description.
    - Furthermore there are some main missions where you are looking after kids which are lost in town... again going searching and searching without any hints.
    - The amount of street gangster is annoying
    - Many invisible walls in town

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So far, Yakuza 3 is my least fav. in the series. But, I never did play the originals and began with Yakuza 0, and after playing that, Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2, the difference is very noticeable. However, story is still good, main side character of Rikiya was a good addition and there was some funny moments with him, including the Hotel elevator scene lol. Seeing Haruka become more dependent and mature for her age was nice. Overall its good. Expand

My first Yakuza game. It's not bad, but that fighting system is terrible for me. Story line is awesome, I hope it will still go this way.

The story line is the best aspect of this game. Sometimes i felt like i was playing a how-to-dad-game, and sometimes, I felt like i was on vacation. Those were strange but interesting feelings.

The story's kinda good, but the english voice acting is uhhhh.. (this person that i won't mention has taken him up to the ruff.) And it's not actually supposed to be the way it is,the bad parts of the game are caused by the double framerate.

There isn’t a bad Yakuza game, but Yakuza 3 Remastered on Xbox is the weakest in the series. Its lengthy introduction takes up about a third of the entire story, whilst it also lacks some of the quality of life improvements found in later versions. But it is still a solid entry, and worth playing through to see the foundations of Kiryu’s later life beginning.

Yakuza 3 Remastered is not a bad game, but it is the worst Yakuza. It's a game that dares to make big changes but lacks the pace to generate as much interest as the previous instalments. As a remaster, the 1080p and 60fps falls short.
