Once again, Ubisoft screws gamers by butchering a game that was much cooler in development. I agree with critics who call Ubisoft the new EA. The Division looked awesome in E3 trailers, and Ubisoft made a point to show us the huge open world we could explore. Instead, we got about a fourth of that world, and the multiplayer component was severely hamstrung. The Division is fun occasionally, but its lacking too much content and variety to keep players interested for more than a few months.

A big component to rpg/mmo’s wannabes is customization and loot. TD fails on both fronts. Despite vehicles, trash, luggage, and military convos scattered everywhere, loot is incredibly rare. Enemies drop the same crap over and over. There are no epic or rare items. Inventory management is a pain because players can hold so little. Chronic loot congestion means players are constantly leaving missions and multiplayer to manage items. There’s a stash box which is accessible to all characters on an account. But the hassle of constantly selling and scrapping isn’t worth it.

Customization is laughable. There’s no individuality in TD because all characters look the same. Faces are so poorly rendered that guys and gals look identical. Gear is pathetic. Everyone runs around in jeans and parkas. No military armor. No police vests. No agency uniforms. Ubisoft developers dropped the ball here, and it’s mindboggling. COD and Destiny prove how much console players love customization. The lack thereof will alienate players.

Missions are repetitive. Enemies are repetitive—there are only 5 types I’ve encountered in 25 hours. Objectives are repetitive. Rewards are repetitive. Missions can be fun with friends, and TD gives the illusion that tactics are important. However, TD is only as good as the groups that play it. But the fact that most enemies wear zero armor and can absorb 500 bullets undermines the “realism” Ubisoft is pushing. A hoodie wearing attacker can run thru 300 M60 rounds without so much as flinching and kill a player with a single swing of a bat. No joke. This breaks the immersion. Plus, it frustrates players who expected strategic, realistic play. TD is filled to the brim with bullet sponge bosses and enemies who stand out in the open taking fire from heavily armed squads. It’s silly.

Exploring isn’t much fun because nothing really happens. Enemies will always respawn at certain spots. So after a few passes on the maps, players will always get the jump on unsuspecting baddies. Unlike the footage we saw in the trailers, nobody uses vehicles. What happened to the Mad Max roamers ploughing the streets in garbage trucks?

Game performance is bad. Constant flickering and frame rate drops plague TD. Players must always be plugged into a server, even when playing solo. The servers are often unreliable. They don’t cull players either, so multiplayer is generally uneventful.

Multiplayer should’ve been TD’s best feature, but the “Dark Zone” is actually one of the worst multiplayer experiences out today. Players fight both AI controlled enemies and other players. Gear and abilities earned in the campaign carry over into the DZ and vice versa. In the E3 footage, we were shown multiple Dark Zones throughout New York. Instead, we get just one, and it’s small. Nearly all the problems that plague the campaign rear their ugly heads in the DZ. Plus, the DZ has unique problems that sap the remaining life out of TD.

Foremost, the DZ is divided into several areas. The harder areas are impossible to survive. Enemies possess ludicrously high health, respawn within a minute or two of dying, and rarely drop loot. My squad cleared out a warehouse and then pushed forward to the next area only to be flanked by the enemies we just defeated. We all died. It’s all the more frustrating because each death cost players money and experience points. In 2 hours, my rank dropped 4 levels and I lost $4,000 playing in Dark Zone Area 2. And that’s with a squad. I dare not venture into Area 3.

Second, encounters with players are rare. I’ve gone hours without seeing anyone. If someone accidently hits a friendly player and “goes rogue”, others will gang up on the poor soul and take them out. A rogue loses massive amounts of money, experience, and DZ gear when they die. However, killing a rogue player nets very little, except for the gear. The unbalanced rewards encourage players to camp low ranking areas of the dark zone and troll AI enemy spawns for loot.

Last, there’s no PVP, just PVPVE. Multiplayer is incredibly biased against PVP and exploration.

The Division has a solid framework which Ubisoft can build on. But TD has too many problems to be fixed before most players set it aside. I truly doubt Ubisoft has the expertise to distill TD into a solid hybrid shooter. I’m pissed that so much was removed by launch. We didn’t get a new franchise, we got Watch Dogs 2: Pedestrian Edition

As you uncover more of the story you start fighting against tougher enemies and the objectives start to change a bit. It still suffers from the majority of the missions being similar but I will say the game is a lot of fun once you've settled in.

Story as you expect from Tom Clancy games is pretty good. The shooting controls feel just fine for a 3rd person shooter, with the option of going 1st person using scopes. You can mod weapons, collect gear, change your appearance and build up your skills.

Matchmaking makes the game a lot of fun, and I recommend putting it on harder difficulty settings cause it's too easy on normal. The map isn't too big but it's big enough. But you should know this is the very definition of a cover shooter. You even have abilities that let you create cover. Taking a lot of hits will kill you very fast, but if you use cover and use your abilities optimally you won't encounter too much difficulty.

All in all it's a fun game to play with some friends... but I would recommend maybe waiting for it to go on sale or wait till they add more content. It isn't breaking new ground but it's not completely unoriginal. It's good, not great but good.

Ubisoft's reputation for repetition will only get worse thanks to this game. It sucks cause their games are visually impressive and they're well designed too. I just wish they would put a little more creativity into the objectives.

The special armor and weapons mods are too few and far and the ability to make items feels underdeveloped and of little to no value. That leaves the Dark Zone, which started out great. But, after I reached DZ rank 30 the entire area started to feel redundant. In fact, the entire game started to feel like I was just doing the same thing over and over again, boring. I would've made Madison square garden a specialty area in the dark zone where 4 on 4 team death matches can take place. There still lots of potential, it just feels underdeveloped unfinished to me. Maybe they tried to do too much? Expand

The game looks good and plays really well, the missions and Dark Zone are a challenge but not overly so as long as you build you character well, keep on top of updating your gear and weapons and group up. The story in the missions is okay but nothing special, just enough there to have missions and nothing else really.

I had with the game for a few weeks playing with friends and randoms via matchmaking. I don't imagine many people would have fun playing alone especially in the Dark Zone so if you are looking for a solo experience I would advice you steer clear since this is firmly geared towards co-op.

I really like the gameplay in the division, but I feel like the game needed a lengthy "how to play" tutorial before it actually began. Apparently there's a crafting option in the game, but I have no idea how to use it (or where it is in the menu). I guess the game expects me to just aimlessly figure it out, which would be fine if I were a 19 year old kid with no job, but I have a life and I don't have time to aimlessly search around for it. Ubisoft desperately needed to add a lengthy "hot to play" tutorial, because I feel lost quite a bit in the game. For example, when you first arrive in Manhattan, the gun salesman is out in the open and easy to find, but for the life of me, I can't find the salesman for the other stuff. I seached the safe area for over 30 minutes, and I still couldn't find him (or her). Also, I find the matchmaking strange and unbalanced. In Destiny the game just automatically does the matchmaking for you, but in the Division, I find that I have to almost play a mini-game in order to get my team put together. I still don't fully understand how the matchmaking works. I'm supposed to be paired with four players, but I only ever seem to get paired with one other guy. Playing the Division with only one person on your team is insanely hard too, good luck getting anything accomplished with only a two man fireteam. All in all, the Division could be a great game, but it's a little too confusing for those of us who don't have 50+ hours to play/learn it. I found Destiny to be very easy to learn and master, whereas the Division is not user friendly in the least. Expand

If you like destiny and are looking for something else to get your attention while destiny gets their next DLC in line, this is it. Pros and cons. Matchmaking is easy, graphics and scenery around New York is great, loot system is addictive and somewhat fair, RPG elements are also great, lots of customization when it comes to game play and style. Cons: At the moment, not much to do in the end game when you reach level 30. You can do the dark zone and get better gear and loot by playing daily missions 3x per day at harder levels. You have main story missions which are the equivalent of "strikes" in destiny. You can match-make up to a group of four. You also have a lot of side missions which all help level up your main base which in turn helps you level up and unlock bigger and better upgrades whether its defensive, health and recovery healer type or offensive gun turrets, remote bombs and little round bombs that follow the enemy. Then there is the dark zone. This games PVP area. Here you encounter a lot of tough enemies and other random agents. You basically have three options. Go in alone and wish for the best as you try to extract all your loot you have collected, go rogue, shoot and kill other agents, take their stuff and try to extract and leave the DZ (or survive the timer set on you until it runs out) or go in with a group and go after other rogues. There is some freedom here as there is a social experiment and see how gamers handle the dark zone. Overall I would give this title a 7or 8 out of /10 but I gave it a 7. While its not perfect, it is however a FUN game which in the end, isn't that all that matters? I am more than positive this game will get better with time as destiny did when it first came out compared to now. Expand

Second the bad: The controls for the most part are good however the grenade controls are confusing making it very difficult to use them. The missions could use many more checkpoints because a few times I have died at the end of a level only to have to repeat the entire level. This leads to another problem, once you start a mission, if you don't complete it you will have to start from the beginning regardless of the checkpoints next time you log in to the game. This means you would be foolish to play this game unless you can set a couple hours aside. The multiplayer has yet to work for me but for the most part the game is fine played single-player.

There is so much potential with this game and franchise and with a couple fixes this could be a game of the year contender.

The Bullet Sponge is freaking real in this game, hardcore. It's terrible and I would have hoped we'd be beyond this by 2016.

Nothing that would be considered game stopping except I have been trapped twice now requiring a quit but enough that it interferes with the immersion of one into the game.
Second, the game is clearly confusing. If you download this game you will soon find yourself scouring the internet for information on how/why things work; the tutorial is atrocious.
Third, the menu system is a disaster as well as the combat menu system (grenades...enough said).
Fourth, it is a pure looting game yet the loot is so uninspiring you will literally end up purchasing your equipment instead of hunt for it and is again, another indicator this game was rushed. You can see they aimed high on many other aspects but the one's that are the foundation of the game, the basis and mechanics of a 3PS are all show little to no love whatsoever.
Finally, the most unforgivable atrocity that, to me, killed off the above average enjoyment of this game. They literally Donkey Kong'ed the game with individual bosses! At the end of missions, they ALL look the same. If it's a sniper, they all look the same. If he's one of the garbage guys, yep same size, same outfit, etc. All that's different is the name...and that is just so said. A complete amateur move from a supposed professional gaming company. Really a let down.
All said and done, it's barely worth the price, barely ($10 lower it really should be) and it is enjoyable but be forewarned...you will need lots of time to not only advance but to understand the game in it's entirety.

I have been waiting for this game for a very long time now, and it's finally here and I really enjoy it. It's not a great game, but it's so damn close to being one.

Lets start with the pros. The graphics in the game are stunning, they really captured the essence of New York and they really did a great job of recreating it. The level design is also fantastic, the cover mechanic in the game works very well, it's smooth and changing cover is very easy and it doesn't knock you out of cover a lot.

The gameplay is incredibly addicting. Each weapon handles differently and that really adds a sense of variety to the game, playing with friends is very fun and probably the best way to play the game. You can get into very tense situations in the game and playing with friends makes those situations both easier and more enjoyable. The loot drops are fair and frequent.

Each mission you feel as you have accomplished something after completing. The game has a fantastic soundtrack that really helps to create a very tense atmosphere and this really works well in the Dark Zone.
The dark zone is incredibly tense and is a more challenging environment to go into after you get bored of the main missions or if you have finished the game entirely.

The customization is very vast. You can get so much weaponry, gear mods, armour and clothes to customize your character with, and it's great!

    Now the cons.
The game is very tedious. The mission structure is the same for every mission and it does get rather repetitive. The story isn't particularly intriguing either, and playing on your own might get really frustrating and rather boring quite quickly. The side missions are also rather dull and are only there for filler and to get you more XP.

I wish there were more buildings you could go into, you have the almost the whole of New York to play in, but there isn't much there to explore. The character customization at the beginning of the game was incredibly limited and the crafting system isn't that great either. And there isn't much to do in the endgame.

    Conclusion:
Overall The Division is a very immersive tactical shooter that is so close to greatness it's rather annoying that it isn't. Exploring New York is great and customizing your character and your Home Base is fun and the game is quite rewarding, it just needed to have a more engaging story and it needed to have better mission structure.

A great game, great sandbox map, graphics, sound and music. But terrible servers and lots, lots of glitches and bugs over the game, that is a shame. Ubisoft looks like don´t care about the players of this game.

    Quite fun, yet disappointing.

The game begins with a very basic character creation system, you can choose between a few different head shapes, skin colors, tattoos, scars etc. Nothing really fancy, and "Basic" is the key word here because everything in this game is just like your character's creation: basic. The missions to gain credits to develop your HQ are basically all the same

The game begins with a very basic character creation system, you can choose between a few different head shapes, skin colors, tattoos, scars etc. Nothing really fancy, and "Basic" is the key word here because everything in this game is just like your character's creation: basic.

The missions to gain credits to develop your HQ are basically all the same and there are a lot of them: Secure an area (understand: kill 50 mobs), Protect some supplies (understand: kill 50 mobs before they destroy the supply boxes) and Collect some stuffs and bring them back somewhere (understand: kill 50 mobs and spend 5 minutes walking with a heavy suitcase which slows you down drastically).

The main and secondary missions are a bit more inspired, yet nothing to go crazy about. The game is heavily scripted (ie: the enemies behind huge glass doors on the top floor of a building won't move if you haven't cleared the lower floors first...) and the AI is pretty basic not to say stupid.
The mobs are basically all the same with a few skin differences: The gangsta with a weapon (baseball bat or a shield + axe or gun), and the "cleaners" with a weapon (a flame thrower or a gun). The bosses are uninspired too (mostly a normal mob on steroid) and there is little difficulty defeating them.

The weapons customization is pretty cool though, you have 6 mod slots on your weapons to improve them. That's very cool and they really affect your weapons stats. The talent tree is also interesting even if you will most likely use the same talents all the time.

Unlike Destiny, you won't see any players in the PVE part of the game (except your team mates of course), and you will only see other players in some secure areas such as your HQ.
The PVP zone (the Darkzone) is fun (except when being chain killed by a group of 4 rogue agents) and stressful. You never know if that guy who helped you for an hour will betray you when it will be time to extract your loots.

Verdict: 6/10, that's not a bad game, but it's far from what I was expecting after watching the trailers.

It's comparable to Destiny. You will be spending a lot of your time doing side missions to level up and/or obtain better gear. Along the way, you'll learn about how the Green Poison virus destroyed New York and how the Division is attempting to restore order. It's a little generic, but hey, it's still a better story than Destiny. The game has up to 4 player co-op, vital if you plan to do challenging missions or Dark zone (where the PvP takes place). After level 30, expect to be grinding Dark zone for days as most of the buyable high-end gear is locked until you hit DZ rank 50.

The longevity of this game will definitely depend on how Ubisoft handles the community, how often they add content, and how they balance the game. As of right now, there isn't much reason for me to continue to play it other than mindlessly killing players in the Dark zone or trying to get slightly-better gear for practically no reason.

To sum it up: It's a fun but somewhat barebones action-RPG, but it really only has maybe 40-50 hours of solid content before you hit the loot grind wall. For better or worse, it's the "New Destiny".

    Basically....... fun with friends only!!!!!!!

In my opinion, it occupies the same space as destiny did
-my friends and I play every now and then together....... fun for a few hours at a time......
-weapons and gear are fun to tinker with.....

    BUT,

The grind is real..... and like destiny, content repeats......

This game has some good aspects, such as RPG and Free Roam. However, Dark Zone is ruined and plagued by bugs, glitches and cheaters. Alongside the Dark Zone, the missions are just too linear and same old shoot people and done.

Being a big fan of Destiny, Diablo 3, Warcraft and anything else involving loot drops, I expected to love this.
However, everthing is just .......dull. I have to admit, I have not got to the end game but the missions I played had me fighting the usual faceless goons but instead of dying after a head shot it simply lowers their hit points. while this feels fine when fighting giant aliens in destiny or Demons in diablo it just feels...... off in the hyper realistic world they have created for this. shooting a whole shot gun clip into someones head and having them laugh it off is just weird.

The same thing goes for the loot drops. in fantasy games, getting the "super heavy Dragon sword of death doom" is awesome! in the devision, getting an Ak47 that I have seen in every game ever with slightly higher stats than my last one is Meh. Don't get me started on the armour, after 20 minutes of my first group instance I got a, Wait for it ....... beanie hat. Eh great?

I also expected huge boss fights against Tanks, Apcs, Elite black ops squads with a legendary back story. Even Crazy serial killer types infected with the games virus would have done! in the 10 or so hours I have played it has just been generic military types over and over and over. This theme has seriously been done to death now.

The player base obviously shows that I am in the minority here, but I just don't get the fascination with this one.

The graphics look nice and and the world is somewhat big, but the Game is a repetitive grind fest where you go there, shoot me, defeat the boss and repeat. The dark zone sucks since if you kill a player your automatically get a bounty despite the Game telling you the dark is a free for all and there are no rules. This game sucks.

this game is only fun to play with two or more friends, playing solo isn't fun at all. most of the missions are half ass and not rewarding, and the main story/main characters are easily forgotten.

I played it without any of the hype for it, and it's not a bad game. If you have people to play with I'm sure it can be very fun, except if you don't very soon it becomes the polar opposite of fun. That and the small amount of things you can do ends up with a game that's just too restrictive for its own good, but still somehow makes you want more. Rating - 70%

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played The Division as a solo player (didn't have Xbox Gold at the time) and it progressively became harder and harder. It was a worthwhile game, yet if you plan on playing it single player - there will be difficulty.

    STORYLINE:
In terms of the storyline - I have no complaints with it. It set out a vast, diverse narrative in the ruined streets of New York. As the player character, you were able to feel an urgency to try and regain some form of structure and coherency to authority in New York when retaking the Base of Operations and establishing the three wings (Tech, Medical, Security).

Now, in terms of missions, playing solo was a challenge after roughly level 15.
During the mission General Assembly (specifically in the parking garage section), I encountered AI that was able to lock onto me in an aimbot manner (the enemy was facing a wall, not looking at me in any way and still able to fire his gun as if he was facing me). There were definitely moments that I had to effectively run and filter enemies down a corridor as it was too much for a solo player.

Roughly towards the middle of the game, there are elements of grinding that you need to do to level up. Previously when you did the main mission, it would provide enough experience to push you into the next level threshold - yet this slowly dies out and leaves the player to hunt for experience through fairly repetitive side missions.

    WEAPONRY:
The Division had a decent range of weapons with aspects that you could modify like most games in this genre (looking at the Ghost Recon games). You could put suppressors on handguns and lasers on the under-barrel and have the weapons damage output change due to the modification. Unlike Ghost Recon games where you can scavenge for the weapon modifications, you had to buy them from merchants. Higher levels also meant higher prices which led to thinking about whether you really needed to buy the suppressor or whether you should upgrade your bulletproof vest.

    CHARACTERISATION AND COMPANIONS:
In the opening of the game, we are presented with a fairly decent character creator screen. There's a small variety of face types, skin tones and hairstyles to choose from which you can then tie in with warpaints and tattoos.
Aside from the generic outfit that your agent spawns in, there's a fair amount of customisation for clothing - with ordinary pieces of clothing like hoodies and shirts that you can find in the torn streets of New York or clothing pieces from Encrypted caches - providing you have a key to open it. Under the security wing, you can also unlock the clothing merchant to peruse any items of clothing or weapon skins that you may not have that are being offered. Ubisoft Club also offers some variation on clothing items/weapon skins.
Surprise, you can dress your agent fairly well in pandemic-ridden New York. Who knew?

Throughout the game, our main 'companion' is Faye Lau. I say companion in a loose term, seeing as she sustains damage in the tutorial phase to make herself be restricted to the Base of Operation and direct us over radio communication. I quite enjoyed Faye's character in the game - she portrays emotion well - from annoyance that she's stuck in the Base of Operations and not being able to help out as she had previously intended, to concern for her sister and the first wave agents. There were certain moments that dialogue felt dull, but overall, NPC's interactions with us, the agent, were OK.

    MOVEMENT:
Movement in the Division was pretty standard. The duck to cover run worked quite well, with only a few times that it cancelled itself midway without me telling it to do so. Sprinting was also the bog-standard, minus the fact that our agent can constantly run without a stamina gauge, which made some fights cheesy as I was able to bypass fights by straight sprinting and vaulting. It also made the aforementioned running down a corridor to filter enemies easier.

In my opinion, The Division is an RPG dressed up as an FPS and it works quite well. I didn't experience any multiplayer elements and my entire experience was a solo climb to level 30, but it was rather enjoyable when the AI didn't aimbot or my agent fall through the floor.

Ubisoft hasn't built a title like this before, and the inexperience clearly shows – The Division seems to be a victim of its ambitions. The good news is that now, games can be updated, and the flaws in the system aren't so thick that they're beyond repair. With proper attention, Ubisoft could easily pivot the game towards the vision it represents. We can only hope that The Division's long-term story is just beginning.

The Division has become the best-selling Ubisoft IP in the first 24 hours and we are not surprised, it gives freedom to the players and offers them the opportunity to explore this post-apocaliptic world.
