    Some levels get frustrating thanks to some poorly placed enemies and obstacles that make clearing them more difficult than they should be, and this issue is only exacerbated by the game's caffeine-infused hyperactive mode, which leaves your character almost entirely out of control. It's meant to be an added challenge, but it goes just a bit too far and becomes quite unwieldy. Other than those moments, however, it's a fun if not exceptional platformer that genre fans should appreciate.

    Super Hyperactive Ninja may have been a decent game if its stodgy controls, poor collision detection and its shower of cheap deaths didn’t dramatically hold the game back. There’s nothing wrong with a game that wants to seriously challenge its players, but when that challenge comes solely from its poor development and baffling design choices, it’s far too hard to overlook, or more importantly, enjoy.

    This is, as the game description says, a game for hardcore players and speedrunners. While I'm not a speedrunner, I consider myself a "hardcore", and I like platformers, so I'd want to give it a try.

    The game is the usual platformer but with a twist. You have to advance to reach the goal (a red door), and this for every level. You need to avoid enemies as they kill you in one hit, and there's the usual "tight jumps".

    Now the twist: you control a character that has a time limit, represented as a caffeine meter. You have to pick up coffees around the levels to fill the meter. If the meter reaches 0, it's game over and you start from the last checkpoint. To advance, you need to use the "Hyperactive Mode" that lets you perform actions like wall jumps and kill enemies at the cost of not being able to change direction and a higher consumption of your caffeine.

    This means you have to use Hyperactive Mode either only when you need it or, if you want to clear the levels fast, reacting to what's ahead and using the level's collisions to "redirect" your character. Levels are clearly designed for the latter, and they are very clever.

    The game is REALLY hard, but when you die is mostly because you stopped where you shouldn't or went without care, so it felt fair to me. There are lots of levels (57 IIRC) and the last ones are a real challenge to beat. There are also 9 different characters, each one comes with an item which lets you explore the levels in different ways and find new paths. Those items can also be purchased in the ingame store so you can use it with any character you like.

    This can be indeed a game only for the most hardcore platformer fans, but if you like platformers you can't miss this.

    I give it an 8/10 due to music, which can be unnerving sometimes, and lack of variety in graphics. Anyway, this is a game you play for the mechanics, so that's not very important.    … Expand

    The platforming genre isn’t as big and as profound as it used to be, but don’t get me wrong the genre still has a big following and there areThe platforming genre isn’t as big and as profound as it used to be, but don’t get me wrong the genre still has a big following and there are still some gems coming out it’s just that this specific genre has taken a backseat to battle royales and shooters etc. As I said before there are still some gems out there and whilst Super Hyperactive Ninja isn’t the best platformer available to you it’s still a pretty decent addition to the genre. Obviously the most important aspect of a platformer is its platforming elements, and thankfully this game gets these elements spot on. Everything feels tight and fluid at all times and this without a doubt means the game stays fun for longer. In my opinion Super Hyperactive Ninja has got the perfect balance of being fair and challenging at the same time, but I will admit that I can see the difficulty curve to be off-putting for some because you will die a huge amount of times. Fortunately for me I didn’t think the difficulty was a problem, and this definitely allowed me to enjoy the content that was on offer. Speaking about the content there is a generous amount for you to sink your teeth into and the best thing is that the content that’s on offer has a decent amount of variety, especially when it came to the level design. I would’ve liked the enemies you face to have had a little more in terms of variety though, but in the end this is only a small gripe. Platformers dont often have good and interesting story’s and unfortunately this game also suffers with the same problem. I wouldn’t say that the story is bad I just think it needed a little more and in my opinion they needed to make it more exciting so that some of the story would stand out. Thankfully though the gameplay does stand out and the story doesn’t do much in the way of dwindling the fun factor the game has, so once again this is another shortcoming that you’re easily able to look past. Another aspect that helps you to look past the game’s shortcomings is the presentation side of things. I absolutely loved the presentation side of the game and I think they’ve done a very good job with both the visuals and sound design and when they both combine together they end up making you enjoy the game more and also give the game some charm and uniqueness. At the end of the day fans of platformers will no doubt enjoy what Super Hyperactive Ninja has to offer and that’s mainly because they’ve got the important mechanics spot on. It may not be perfect in all areas and it may be too difficult for some, but in the end it provided me with more enjoyment than frustration and that’s exactly what a platformer should do.… Expand
