This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has the recipe to be the best game of 2019, but just falls short. It borrows from Uncharted, Soulsborne, and Metroid Prime games, but doesn’t do anything exceptionally well.

I’ll start with the most important thing, the combat, which it borrows from Soulsborne. At first it’s really fun, but quickly becomes cumbersome later in the game, particularly when you are out up against, 3, 4, 5 and sometimes 6 enemies at a time. You’ll constantly find yourself getting pummeled, unable to attack. You constantly find yourself taking blows, despite the fact you are dodging them.

Exploration is the next element that is heavily borrowed, from the Uncharted games. Uncharted is known for its exploration. In this game, exploration is okay, but there’s not much to really explore. You’ll cling to walls, ropes, and they like, but you’ll find yourself falling to senseless deaths instead of being amazed by the exploration.

Thirdly, the level design, which is heavily borrowed from the Metroid Prime games. The level designs are the most impressive and least shooting offer of the game, but even then the levels don’t hold a candle to the design you see in Metroid Prime, Soulsborne games, and they like.

All in all, rent it, burn through it in a weekend, and move on. There’s not much to do here beyond completing the story. There’s not much customization, and there’s enough skill points to max out every skill in the game, leaving very little reason to carefully think about your character build.

I see some people compare this game to Uncharted, but unfortunately I see little connection. Uncharted is a game with a beautiful story, which I could not leave behind, until I finished it. This game is basically a platform jumper in the world on Star Wars. Game difficulty is mainly archived by wonky controls and continuously respawning enemies.

This game pretty underwhelming, the combat sucks, the storyline is pretty lazy, and I’m two hours in and super bored.

At the beginning of the game a person drops your character presumably to his death, but he gets lucky. Why would an inquisitor whos job it is to watch you die drop you to your death. Then when your ship lands at the imperial outpost why does no one even register that

Then when your ship lands at the imperial outpost why does no one even register that you’re there? A tie fighter even flies right past the ship. Nothing, not even registering that you’re there parked at the port.

There are tons of logical errors like this throughout the first few hours.

Honestly I wasn’t expecting KOTOR but based on the reviews I thought it would be comparable. It’s not, very mediocre. Sad.

Gameplay and story and average. But the map design system in the game is awful. And a lack of any type of fast travel system means that you and this broken ass system are stuck together. The gameplay and story are ok, but I'm not going to even try to finish this game with a map system like the one here

I don't have too many complaints. One is the texture pop-in is absolutely horrendous, please fix. Also your attacks are very long and drawn out, and you aren't able to cancel them, so you are left exposed if you strike even a moment to early. And lastly, some of the climbing sections felt very spotty with their hit detection.

The combat is complicated enough to keep in interesting but not as hard as something like Dark Souls. The enemy types keep coming as new with the last new enemy type being pretty close to the end of the game which helps keep it interesting because you have to fight each enemy type differently. The bosses are difficult enough to make you die once or a few times depending on the difficulty until you learn there combos. They change combos throughout the fight so when you get to the end they'll switch it up again and can catch you off guard. The lightsaber battles are probably the best fights though because who doesn't like a lightsaber battle. The story is strong and keeps you invested in the characters even the character who comes in a lot later. The story is probably the thing that makes this game so good in so many ways. The graphics are beautiful no matter what you're playing on, the environments you get to explore and the attention to detail there is is just magnificent. The sound is also good. Not just the ambient sound and sound of blaster fire and all the other sounds that come with wielding a lightsaber against an enemy, but also the soundtrack which adds to so many scenes and really adds to the tension of a fight or the way it adds to the drama of the game. It's all in all such a great game and really shows what happens when EA let's a developer do what they need to do to make a great story. Expand

A grab bag of established techniques that ultimately fall short, Uncharted style action/exploration that’s let down by shonky controls. Sekiro style combat that’s way too loose and unbalanced, getting more and more aggravating as the game progresses. A linear map that forces you to backtrack after you reach your destination, that makes you revisit to explore deeper after unlocking new powers. And a special mention to the bug, oh so many performance bugs (and I’m on X1X), nothing game breaking but bad pop in, loading screens at the worse times, textures constantly loading in at the last second causes a really jarring experience. But, if you are a fan of Star Wars this is a must to play for for the story alone, solid emotional performances just made me want to keep playing. Issues aside, I still recommend playing it, there is a nugget of gold in this turd. Expand

To the point: Force Unleashed are better games. Massive judder and framerate problems drag this to a new low at this stage of current gen consoles, and I'm playing on X1X. Generic gameplay. Generic story. And generic quality. This is like a dollar store Star Wars rip off.

Hopping and jumping from ledges to cliffs and running on the wall and then jumping. It can get really frustrating/boring/annoying at times, because I think there are just too much of it.
One of the most basic Jedi skill, the higher jump/ spin jump call it whatever doesn't even get available until well deep into the game, I'd say 3/4 way and this would be a crucial skill to get, much more important than force push or pull.
Bad camera angles can also be annoying. It's not uncommon to get stuck at a place with the camera is behind and there is a rock wall, and you can't see what you are doing while 3-4 enemies are whacking at you. Sometimes I felt like throwing my controller away and just stop playing this game, because of that.
Also I say, the Jedi powers in this game are just so basic and I don't think I ever felt I was becoming a powerful Jedi, but more like these skills are crucial that I am not gonna get murdered. The main character always feel underpowered when facing the tougher enemies and bosses, it's always just defending and trying to land some lucky shots.
The game is also unfinished. Getting stuff from crates doesn't make much sense, unless you want to change your outfit and the color of your spaceship. It feels so unfinished, it feels like they wanted to have something done with these crate items, but instead they ended up just visual stuff, no impact on gameplay. Why modify my lightsaber with different colors and handles if 99% of the time I can't see it, beside the color of the laser?
Anyway, the game is fun for a while, although it could get boring or annoying, doing the same thing over and over, like the last part of the game, I just wanted to finish it and be done with it already, although I was kinda annoyed by scripted events and pushing the right button at the right time etc..that felt gimmicky and unnecessary. If you're a Star Wars fan, give it a shot, but if you never liked Tomb Raider kinda jumping around and hate dying over and over because falling into cliffs or the boss' pattern needs to be learned first, then I'd say try it out first with a friend' console etc, before throwing $60 at it.

And after having beaten it on Grandmaster difficulty and earned every achievement within a single playthrough...

I can say that Disney, flexing it's corporate muscles by forcing EA to publish a single player focused game (since Battlefront 1 and 2 were flops), managed to give one of the better action adventure if not better Star Wars titles of the last decade... If not more.

While under Kotor and the Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy games (to myself at least), which hold a high station for me due to customization and nostalgia - plus, being great games in their execution, Respawn Entertainment's Jedi: Fallen Order is a solid, enjoyable romp through space. With a pretty decent combat system that's enhanced by force powers and unlockable skills.

While it can be annoying (especially on Grandmaster difficulty) because of the way that they strategically arrange enemies with complementary skill sets, and the game is still new and buggy here and there. In just these last couple days they've been dropping patches and fixes that help fix things like long load times or texture flickering.

I'd like to move on from the raw meat of the gameplay however:

Jedi: Fallen Order also touches on some pretty hard subjects, rather tastefully in the relatively short time it has with us; loss - death of friends and loved ones. Failure and the mindset of defeat it creates. And being on a constant narrative backfoot...

It leans a lot of what I think is successful on compelling characters, while potentially possessing cliches - the cliches of the Star Wars universe are used to great effect in creating believable, realistic characters that exist in a world that feels lived in, and voice acted brilliantly (almost all the time) with some pretty on-point mocap, to the point some quiet scenes with just facial expressions or eye flickering manage to convey quite a bit of emotion.

It got to the point even I was getting misty eyed during various scenes - especially those that involved the darker subject matter.

If you've been putting this off because it's an "EA" game, or because it's "Just another white, male, protagonist" I think that you should of course - air on the side of caution, but certainly experience what this game has to offer us.

This game, despite having the stamp of "EA" on it - and seems to have been sent out to die to fit EA's "Gamer's aren't wanting Single Player narratives" similarly to Titanfall 2, this game - just as with the aforementioned title, feels much more like a Metroidvania Respawn Entertainment Title. EA has made it clear, they want live service games that can make them constant money, I believe that the critical and commercial success of this game has shown that the gaming world, if not just the Star Wars fans therein - will hopefully show all these companies who "know" what we want, that they're not correct - and that they should be LISTENING.

Simply put, overall, this game is not fun to play. Initially, the opening sequence captured my attention. Very detailed and immersive. I say “unrealistic” because although you can cut through creatures like a warm knife through warm butter, suddenly the lightsaber only performs scrapes and cuts on the enemy troops and other bipedal threats. WE ALL HATE THIS LIMITATION. It makes no sense. Platforming is useful in some games but this **** is just annoying. Bull**** puzzles whose only function is to irritate. Entirely too linear. the only real thing that let me down for this game and the only thing keeping me from giving it a perfect score is, they have a costumes menu with ONLY recolors of the same costume, don't get me wrong thats all well and good i would have just enjoyed some more variety possibly fitting in with the planets you visit, that as well as the ponchos menu being sort of the same thing with slight variations AND the cloth physics feeling stiff on the main character but not anyone else taking you out of the experience abit, all of these things lowered my score of this game.

HOWEVER in saying that, lightsaber customization is wonderful and i hope to see it in possibly a sequal to this game? which would make me EXTREMELY happy, Respawn have gone back into my good books with this game and EA keeping micro-transactions away only makes it better.

this game is a 9/10 for me, it's ALMOST perfect but a lack of planets and costumes combined with the main characters stiff cloth physics keep this game from getting a perfect 10 in my books.

Jedi Fallen Order is one of the best games in the Star Wars franchise and one of the best games of 2019. It has some sore spots, but the story, characters, worlds, and combat more than make up for its shortcomings. Fans of Star Wars will love it. Fans of action/adventure games will have a fantastic time. It is great to finally see Respawn branch out and get a chance to craft something they clearly have a passion for. This is not a game to be missed and gives me hope for the future of the series.
