I love Star Wars, but this game is an infuriating, half finished mess with truly diabolical load times (standard xbox one). Possibly the biggest waste of time I've ever spent whilst gaming, at least it was "free" on game pass.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is overrated and hyped up even on EAPlay. The story is fine, kinda uninspired and on par for star wars stories. The gameplay is where this game starts to fail, when I wasn't bored by long load times, long drawn out cutscenes of characters just staring at each other, I found myself frustrated at the "puzzley" nature of this game.

When I installed this game I expected a fun adventure action game similar to Force Unleashed, instead I got a boring, unoriginal, star wars skinned version of uncharted/tomb raider. If you like puzzle games and star wars then this is for you! If you like playing a powerful Jedi who can flip around mowing down any and all enemies in his/her path than purchase or replay Force Unleashed.

This game is boring plain and simple. The story takes no risks and neither does this game play. I expected a much more exhilirating Jedi experience not sitting around getting my ass kicked by lizards and the like. The animals in this game are harder to kill than the people and most the game I have spent trying to figure out how to navigate the levels. Confusing layouts, no clear direction, but very harsh limitations wtf were the level designers thinking.

Save your money on this one and just go play force unleashed instead.

There were subtle things too which made the game feel unfinished. Such as when underwater and opening chests the same animation plays on land, which involves your droid entering and shuffling around. Except in water it doesn't. After which your character comes out with a witty (repeated) one liner - that makes no sense because he's underwater with a "breather" equipped.

Even the credits weren't traditional Star Wars themed. Music overall was dull, you didn't include any of the original Star Wars soundtrack?

Fallen Order is a decent game but I’ve never been a fan of Dark Souls (or metroidvania either). The enemies either come at you and you dodge only for the enemy to curve in midair and still hit you or you dodge and are out of the way and they STILL hit you. That need redoing from scratch because the physics is just messed up. You can swing off one rope and get thrown a mad distance and then another time you let go only to drop right away. Drives me nuts. Refilling your stimpacks also refreshes all enemies which is confusing. It’s the one mechanic I hate with a vengeance. Respawn them when you return to a planet, not every time you loot some stims. Imagine Fallout where every chest spawns the enemies back. It just doesn’t work. Force Unleashed is better than this. Combat is better. Story is too. And Vader isn’t like a hyperactive trash talker Like Second Sister is. But that’s my opinion of an older gamer Expand

I see some people compare this game to Uncharted, but unfortunately I see little connection. Uncharted is a game with a beautiful story, which I could not leave behind, until I finished it. This game is basically a platform jumper in the world on Star Wars. Game difficulty is mainly archived by wonky controls and continuously respawning enemies.

I say “unrealistic” because although you can cut through creatures like a warm knife through warm butter, suddenly the lightsaber only performs scrapes and cuts on the enemy troops and other bipedal threats. WE ALL HATE THIS LIMITATION. It makes no sense. Platforming is useful in some games but this **** is just annoying. Bull**** puzzles whose only function is to irritate. Entirely too linear. Bogus “rewards” for finding a crate. Upgrades aren’t impressive and/or all that interesting. I turned it off once I realized the game simply had no depth beyond what I’ve already mentioned. Expand

Then when your ship lands at the imperial outpost why does no one even register that you’re there? A tie fighter even flies right past the ship. Nothing, not even registering that you’re there parked at the port.

There are tons of logical errors like this throughout the first few hours.

Honestly I wasn’t expecting KOTOR but based on the reviews I thought it would be comparable. It’s not, very mediocre. Sad.

WAY too many cosmetic boxes in the game that make it not feel rewarding to explore the planets. Graphics are ok, not that good for a 2019 AAA game though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its great for the first couple of hours or so then it dawns on you how shallow it really is. The combat is clunky and given that most of the game is combat it needed to be better. First the camera will pan out so you cannot see whats happening on regular occasions which when you are required to block and parry with accuracy completely ruins it. Enemy's can suck you in with combat animations and will quite often glitch so they are stuck on a door or facing the wrong way etc... not to mention having to take down atst's with a light sabre just felt ridiculous, would have been better to just not include them. The platforming is pretty much poor mans tomb raider combined with a world map that's unreadable and endless back tracking with no fast travel gets old real fast. This game could have been so good but unfortunately it's crap and im not sure why all the high reviews, it may well be the best star wars game in a while but that doesn't say a lot. Expand

The game looks great, sounds great, and I liked the main character. The RPG "skill point" system was also nice, allowing you to progressively make your character better in the ways that matched your play style. And the story, that I played up until, was good. I liked it. It wasn't amazing, but it definitely drew me in enough that I wanted to know what was going to happen next.

Now for the negatives, starting with combat. Lots of people seem to love the combat. For me, I would recommend the combat of Dark Souls over the combat in this game, even to non-gamers. The timing of parries/blocks and the hitboxes in this game are maddeningly awful. Even when I turned the difficulty all the way down to "Story", which gives you the least enemy aggression and the largest window for parrying, it was still awful. In fact, it was worst on "Story" difficulty because enemies will sometimes stand in front of you for *minutes* without doing anything if you let them, which is entirely too passive to be interesting. But you'll be trying to reflect a blaster shot and sometimes it works, even when the shot is like 10 feet to your right, and sometimes you'll block and still get hit in the chest because it didn't register your guard. Same thing with melee fights but worse because if you get hit by the first light attack in a chain, your character is so bad at fighting that they just can't block mid-chain so you either need to find an opportunity to dodge-roll away or you just take the damage. And then even if you do roll away, the game technically punishes you for not parrying blows. Enemies have block gauges and when you parry you can take a chunk of that gauge away. But even on "common" enemies, you have to parry at least three times, but the block gauge regenerates after a few seconds of not taking a hit, so if you dodge away you might be letting the enemy regenerate all that hard work you've done up to that point. And don't even think about using your own light attack chains to deplete it, because all enemies will always block if they have the gauge for it and they will always parry you somewhere in your chain. Always.

This wouldn't be awful if not for the "rest" mechanic, which literally resets all enemies on the map. You see, you get a limited number of healing items which only replenish when you rest. You can't find more of them in the field so resting is literally the only way to get more healing items. But if you just finished a really hard fight near a save point, and then you rest to get back all your healing items, any difficult enemies you defeated are back and potentially blocking your path forward. It's not enjoyable to use up all your healing items on a mini-boss, save your progress, replenish your supplies, and then have to fight him all over again. Probably requiring you to replenish your healing items all over again, thus starting the never-ending cycle of pain. This wouldn't be so bad if combat was actually compelling and competent. But again, your main character is a terrible fighter and should probably die in most fights because every action he takes is drawn out, slow, inefficient.

Other nit-picks include force power not regenerating over time. It's the force, you always have the ability to use it, it's just your only constitution that determines how often you can pull off tricks. You shouldn't have to hit enemies constantly to use force powers in battle, it doesn't make sense. Also, if you are going to reset all enemies after resting, then you should be able to replenish healing items on the map somehow, without resting. That or the main character needs some kind of slow health regen. Finally, your character somehow forgot all the basic force stuff, like pushing and pulling, which seems ridiculous because he effectively uses force pull at the beginning of the game and then has to re-learn it later to actually use it whenever he wants.

Overall, I think Control spoiled me. I played it through t completion before even touching Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. It had a great combat system with supernatural abilities similar to Jedi force powers. In fact, if you re-skinned Control with Star Wars, it would have made a substantially better Jedi game than this. Can't recommend this game, but I can recommend Control if you want to basically have Jedi powers, just with a supernatural theme.

It's pretty much a less fun version of Tomb Raider with poor mechanics that is Star Wars themed (I actually loved the new Tomb Raider series). Let's start with the good.

    Now with the bad:
    - The game feels like it's pretty much on rails.
    - Gameplay mechanics are a bit silly. Animations take a bit too long and that is what makes fighting challenging (and frustrating). The poor mechanics make block/parry mostly useless.
    - The force "abilities" are boring. as. hell. Spoiler alert: one of them is a double jump. How exciting...
    - It quickly gets repetitive.

If you want good combat go to different games. I've beaten a couple of dark souls games but this is a poor clone. This is due to auto locking and damage being way too high, a 1/8 for blaster fire is kinda much when we have zero ranged attacks. I've gotten everything from t-poses, broken enemy AI, henious framerate dips, nonstop texture pop-in, mid-fight loading screens, but the most egregious offender has to be Greez's stubble that will just phase in and out of the top of his head at random. It's honestly laughable just how busted the game is. Jedi Fallen Order is one of the best games in the Star Wars franchise and one of the best games of 2019. It has some sore spots, but the story, characters, worlds, and combat more than make up for its shortcomings. Fans of Star Wars will love it. Fans of action/adventure games will have a fantastic time. It is great to finally see Respawn branch out and get a chance to craft something they clearly have a passion for. This is not a game to be missed and gives me hope for the future of the series.
