Using the original theme in the Jedi appointment scene, it is more like Star Wars orthodoxy than Episode 7, 8 and 9. In terms of movie, it is the same as Rogue One and has enough time to play. It's fantastic. I'm skeptical about the critics who are ignorant that this game didn't get GOTY because it's an EA game.

Solid game, probably the best Star Wars game I've ever played. Engaging story and characters, great level design for the worlds with lots of secret areas to explore, and satisfying, tactical combat that feels like nothing I've ever played. However, the combat is also HARD AF, and was honestly too hard for me at some parts. I wish the normal difficulty was actually normal. What kind of fireworks will be released towards the end, really strong. Up front, I haven't played Tomb Raider, Uncharted or Dark Souls so far, the game was inspired by all of them.

    Gameplay
That's why the gameplay was a refreshing experience for me and was really fun. Sometimes it is a bit imprecise, but that didn't really bother me.

The fights feel unbelievably awesome as the progress continous, all the "combos" you can pull off, coupled with interesting opponent patterns and the right party system, strong.

Finally there were puzzles to solve again, most of which are quite simple. Coming back to old planets, discovering chests, paths, etc. also motivated me incredibly. I also achieved relatively high exploration percentages in each case. The abbreviations were chosen very well for this, a travel system to the checkpoints would have made it too easy. By the way, the checkpoints are chosen very fairly (I played on the second level of difficulty.

    Atmosphere / graphics / performance
You really get a lot of Star Wars on offer here, especially connoisseurs recognize some allusions here, which made my heart leap. The mystique and gloom in some areas was strongly staged, but there was more to it than that.

Visually a stunner, at least mostly in terms of performance, there are a few drops in graphics mode, but found the "60fps" mode really bad to be honest.

The music used discreetly but correctly. One or the other piece can be heard immediately.

    story
I'm satisfied, although more depth would have been nice, but then there are some surprises on offer. Respawn has created a nice Star Wars experience here.

    Conclusion
Finally EA, with great help from Respawn we finally got another great experience in the Star Wars universe, a must for every fan. I am happy and now wish for a great RPG (with a crew) in Star Wars guise and the latest technology.
    Subjectively 10/10 Objectively I fluctuate between 8/10 9/10 but opt for 9/10.

May the force be with you.

AAA game studios have mastered FPS games like Titanfall 2 and COD, but they are mediocre at adventure games. Fallen Order looks nice and has some great quality production behind it. You land at a place, receive some vague motivation to "go to X location", and just follow the narrow path of storm troopers to where you're supposed to go. Press X to kill storm trooper, hold B to deflect all lasers shot at you. The Star Wars universe has rarely felt so empty. Much as the film universe peaked decades ago, the video game universe peaked with KOTOR. I don't know how KOTOR's slow-paced, janky combat system feels more compelling than Fallen Order's; but it does. I think Star Wars has stopped being a foundation for great story-telling, and has become a straight-jacket. Every mission in Titanfall 2 was unique and memorable, whether stalking the canyons to find batteries for BT, wall running through an operating manufactory, leaping back and forth through two timelines, or flying through the air in a massive helicopter chase. Every mission in Fallen Order just feels like a reskinned version of another. Respawn should return to Titanfall and continue to improve and build out that universe. Expand

This is an amazing Star Wars game, but just a fairly servicable game overall. If you're just playing it for the lightsaber combat, you'll definitely get your money's worth because there's plenty of it and it handles it better than any previous Star Wars game. This game has some serious white-knuckling combat. It often made me furious, but it was exhilirating nonetheless.

This game has some serious white-knuckling combat. It often made me furious, but it was exhilirating nonetheless.

But I do feel like they put all their eggs in one basket, because everything else is just kinda okay. The story is pretty awesome with some great motion-capture performances from a relatively small cast of characters. I love having this story that's neatly wedged between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, where the architecture of both trilogies are prevalent. I do think the narrative is pretty frontloaded though and drags by the end. That could be in conjunction with my constant deaths making me grow increasingly impatient, but I also do think the 2nd half of the game has a lot of "go here, now go here, now go back here." All of the best set-pieces are in the beginning, which I would say peaks at the Kashyyk sequence, and after that I was ready for the game to wrap it up. The finale is suitably epic though, and really makes me wish the story could've flourished in between.

I'd say the worst part of this game is how the gameplay commits to being a jack of all trades, and ends up being average in everything. The puzzles are very shallow clones of Zelda and the Arkham games. The parkour mechanics very clearly inspired by Uncharted and the Tomb Raider games, but lacking the excitement and grip that those ones have. Both these elements end up making exploration feel strangely empty, and very rarely do the environments feel naturally designed. Every room feels like the next sequence, rather than discovering an actual world you can believe and desire exploring.

I'd say it's required playing for a Star Wars fan, just seeing how this story fits into the mythos is satisfying enough. But I would say the videogame itself is just average. I'm already not a fan of these Dark Souls combat type games and shoehorning games types that I like didn't enrich the experience at all. And I feel even someone who is a fan of those games has played better versions of it. I mostly enjoyed playing it, but I probably won't ever revisit it again. I'll definitely play the sequel though, as I'm excited to see how they improve it!

Bugs aside, when the game runs smoothly it is simply too easy for a lack a better description. The basic mechanics seem dumb down to allow a simple effortless experience which may appeal to some, all but the hardest setting seem just too easy. The hardest setting like many newer games is laughably more difficult than the others, sort of overly overcompensating for the later, not all that enjoyable honestly on the highest setting.

The combat is really fun on the whole, it's just unfortunate that the lightsaber functions more like a baseball bat when you're fighting stormtroopers - the lack of dismemberment feels off when fighting with a weapon that is supposed to slice limbs off effortlessly. Other than that though, I liked the combat, and there are enough upgrades to your abilities you unlock to keep it interesting. Reflecting blaster bolts feels great, as does using the force.

All told it's a solid game but not a particularly inspired one. I liked the story but it's pretty standard Star Wars, and the gameplay is derivative of a lot of AAA action adventure games. That isn't to say that it's not fun though, because it definitely is. Who doesn't want to be a Jedi?

Gameplay wise it’s a clunky mess when it comes to traversal and combat does not really hit it’s stride until you progress your abilities and upgrade you’re lightsaber. The biggest problem with it’s level design is the map. Since it’s presented as a 3D hologram it’s difficult to find your objective or even figure outwhich way is the right way to move forward in the level. Then when you’ve completed your objective on a certain level, you have to travel ALL the way back to your ship and figure out which is the best way to head back. Though the biggest problem I had with the game were it’s technical issues. The game crashed multiple times during my play through and I often found myself falling through the map. Overall I thought it nailed the boss fights and hit its marks when it came to the companion characters. However your game might have a problem if a droid (BD-1) is you’re best character. You might want to go back to the drawing board when it comes to developing your protagonist. Jedi Fallen Order was a mixed experience for me as it was great to finally play as a Jedi in a Star Wars game for the first time in years however I think the game could’ve done with a lot more polish before it’s release and could’ve brought more substance to its protagonist. Pros: visually great. areas are beautiful, character renditions are great.
    - combat. no more button mashing. strategy and technique are needed. awesome.
    - great story
    - nice to finally see a single player game

cons - very short for the price. 18 hrs with almost non existent re-playability
    - no fast travel. can be a major grind going back to get chests
    - very limited customization. Cosmetic only, and basically just color schemes.
    - maps. hard to read when there are multiple levels. no ability to mark objects for later or points
    of interest.
    - an odd obsession with sliding ski slope terrain
    - gross, painful, absurd area loading times

All said, it's a pretty damn good game. But it had the potential to be amazing. take the fight mechanics and graphics, and turn out something like KoToR, and it would be epic. Moral choices, non-linear story, actual customization......add that? hell yeah.

Absolutely loved my experience with this game. The story was enjoyable and engaging, the music was very well used and the controls while quite clumsy served their purpose.

I hope we see a sequel of some kind in the future.

A wonderful mix of number of genres. In a way it is Dark Souls-like game, but with considerably more depth and narrative in it.

If you want good combat go to different games. I've beaten a couple of dark souls games but this is a poor clone. This is due to auto locking and damage being way too high, a 1/8 for blaster fire is kinda much when we have zero ranged attacks. Honestly I just found myself wishing for power beyond basic stuff like push and pull.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen order will give all those Jedi-junkies the fix they didn't get from the most recent triology. Star Wars: Jedi Fallen order will give all those Jedi-junkies the fix they didn't get from the most recent triology. It gets a lot right, and is step forward from the disaster that both battlefront games were at release. This is a single player experience that will challenge you, but also provide the player with a satisfying ending and game loop.

    The Story 2.5/3
Some players may think being locked into a story of a singular character may ruin the RPG experience but look at the Witcher series which for many is heralded as the best RPG/adventure game on the market. This game does enough to make you feel like you're in control of the story with enough customization and collectibles to keep any completionist busy. You play as a young Jedi who slowly discovers more and more of his abilities as you progress through an enthralling story.

    Gameplay 2/3
This is not going to be a walk in the park. This is a "Souls" like game where you will be forced to play defensive before finding the right time to attack. (Like a real swordsman). When you first jump in it can be daunting but persevere. A lot of it becomes reactionary and it is extremely fun to discover new areas solving small puzzles and fighting different enemies each with their own unique battle loop. There will be times you'll want to throw the controller through the TV, but when you beat that boss you've died 40 times to, the payoff is always worth it.

    Art Design 1.5/2
This game looks beautiful. From the droplets of rain hitting the saber in cut scenes, to the crashing of objects as you battle your way through the campaign. You will be in for a visually stimulating experience. I had a few issues with frame rate however I was playing on an Xbone S and this game is clearly going to run well on the newest hardware.

    Sound 2/2
The voice acting and the characters were all unique and made you feel apart of this world. The sounds from the blasters bouncing off the deflection of your light saber. The crashing of constructs falling from the battlements. This is a masterpiece and a real stimulation of your ear holes.

This game is a solid 8/10 with a 20-30 hour campaign depending on how much of the collectibles and shinnies you want to find along the way. This is a must play game for any star was fan.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Mi previous favourite was the very old Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, which featured very good characters and storytelling, but you became overpowered the moment you picked up the lightsaber. No worries, it was a complete blast nonetheless.
Now we have much, much better combat. Enemies are strong and dangerous. Sure, a poor stormtrooper won't pose much danger, but when you confront several of them, supporting a kickass purge trooper, well, button mashing won't get you very far. You'll need to learn the attack patterns, strengths and weaknesses of every enemy in order to be effective. Just like Assassin's Creed, the move to a Souls-lite combat system is a huge asset, you get the fun but not the endless frustration.
I just laugh at those reviewers playing in standard mode and complaining about low difficulty: if it's too easy for you, why not raise that level a bit? I play on Jedi Master level and the game is still mostly easy, but I also find it rewarding. If you want a real challenge, go grandmaster.
Exploring the various levels, you'll find many collectibles that you cannot reach, so you are encouraged to return after acquiring new Force powers. Yes, it feels grindy and yes, it's a time sink, but I'm willing to forgive the designers, thanks to the blast I'm having.
Production values are huge. Characters seem alive in the way they move and talk, and the environments are often spectacular, for an immersion that goes beyond that of the movies. The story is... well, I can't think of a Star Wars movie that had a really good story: it's your standard space opera, but very well narrated.
And finally, we have one AAA game that does not pile s*** of white males. There's plenty of strong women in the game but we have equally strong men too! Wow, in a gaming scene where it's continuously implied that men are weak, stupid, cowardly, oafish and egotistic, being treated as equals is refreshing (especially considering the awful treatment we received in "The Last Jedi", brrr!).

Fallen Order is a fantastic story-driven game that every Star Wars fan needs to play. The game could've easily been a linear experience, but Respawn Entertainment took it above and beyond. A few months before the final Star Wars movie, when the hype was at a high, so the game can get the attention it deserves.

Probably the best Star Wars Single Player game in a long time, Fallen Order delivers everything you want from a Star Wars Game.

The general setting is about a Jedi in hiding, Cal Cestis, who is forced to use the Force and because of that is spotted by the Empire and needs to flee.
He meets up with people, that want to restore the order of the Jedi, which was whiped out with Order 66 (the game is offical Star Wars Lore canon by the way.)
Fighting against the Empire and their forces and trying to uncover a solution to restore the Jedi order, Cal and his Crew go on different planets in the Universe to find new friends and of course answers.

The gameplay in general can be compared to a light Dark Souls experience.
The planets are mid sized, sometimes open to explore for secrets and upgrade, such as more "healing potions" or Echoes of other people to either get experience points to get Skill Points or fragments you need to get overall more Health or more Force for your abilities. The Skill points are spent at Meditation points, that are like bonfires, that also respawn the enemys.
Sometimes the world is linear because of story reasons, which is a good thing so you don´t get distracted from your goal.
You can also find short cuts the get faster back to meditation points to invest your skill points.

The skill system is pretty simpel, either more health, stronger attacks or a new ability.
In my opinion, some abilitys are just to "show off" the nice Motion capture they did with Cameron Monaghon, the actor who plays Cal, and are not very practical in the combat systems.

The combat isn´t kill a dozen enemys in 5 seconds but also more of a Dark Souls like experience, less but tougher enemys.
Of course there are normal storm troopers that aren´t a challange at all, but some enemys are tough to battle, but overall the difficulty isn´t as hard as in Souls games.

To conclude this review, Fallen Order is a satisfying Star Wars experience with a nice combat system but seems a bit experimental with the gameplay elements.
It is a Highlight for Star Wars and Souls fans, but not a highlight for every gamer.
After the success of the game I am hoping for a sequel which as lesser elements and focuses on the strength of the game which are the combat system and the lore you don´t really need the small open world.

The graphics range from stunning to PS2 era abominations with some baffling choices around character design (cal and cere obviously fell out the ugly tree during their respective births) and the wookies are quite frankly disgusting for a triple A game design. They're like if slenderman and cousin it somehow had babies, rendered in the worst possible way imaginable. They will haunt your nightmares and completely ruin what is otherwise a very nice segment of the game. The story is interesting enough to keep your attention, but the gameplay is often frustrating. You will be falling to your death a lot in this, particularly when sliding down scenery or when you are climbing and your character randomly decides to launch himself off the screen or fall to your doom. The camera frequently moves into terrible positions and I've had a few moments where it has got completely stuck, as if it is caught on a wall. As fun as it is to wield a lightsaber, combat feels clunky and unresponsive. The map is also often frustrating and scenery can interfere with the map view.

That being said, the skill tree and customisation is fun,and there are some great cameos for star wars fans. The little droid is also good fun. The story has its moments and the planets are mostly fun to explore, when you aren't falling to your death.

Overall, I'm a little shocked at the graphics and glitches in a big triple A EA game. For every good moment, there are ten frustrating or glitchy moments. It's a good game but not great. It's almost as if EA didn't think games could exist without loot boxes and so didn't put as much effort into polishing things...

    Now with the bad:
    - The game feels like it's pretty much on rails.
    - Gameplay mechanics are a bit silly. Animations take a bit too long and that is what makes fighting challenging (and frustrating). The poor mechanics make block/parry mostly useless.
    - The force "abilities" are boring. as. hell. Spoiler alert: one of them is a double jump. How exciting...
    - It quickly gets repetitive.

The entire game is predicated on the parry and dodge system but it’s clunky at best. Your character animations are slow like you’re some big ogre and once you begin an animation, you can’t block or dodge until it’s completed this leads to combat that isn’t dynamic because you have no choice but to just sit and wait for the enemy to attack so you can parry, get a swing in, then stop and wait again. You can’t be fighting with quick twitch movements like in a fighting game because you can’t quickly block incoming attacking while you’re in the middle of swinging your saber. You can’t interrupt your own attacks. What this all means is that so much damage feels unavoidable because you just can’t block in time because you’re stuck in animations. Now throw in a big group of enemies, forget it. You’ll probably either die, or lose a good chunk of health in the process. I’ve been playing video games for the better part of 30yrs and am usually very good at most games and even easy mode was punishingly difficult for this reason. Given the above, and the system of meditating and healing up after each section also seems to suggest they expect you to take a lot of damage. It would not be plausible to go most of a mission with little to no damage. I also think the system of making you lose all of your XP on death then recovering it by attacking the enemy who killed you is aggressive and unnecessary. Expand

Many of the gameplay mechanics are copied, whether it’s climbing on rocks (it seems like > 10 percent of the game is spent doing this), squeezing through tight gaps, solving puzzles in ancient sites, conveniently sliding down some kind of nature ramp, swinging on ropes, and platforming across the landscape. This kind of gameplay is kind of fun at first, but gets boring quickly and kills the immersion. For example, why the **** do all these planets have nature slides? Oh, here comes another rock-climbing part. Great. **** this! I want to do Jedi stuff.

The lightsaber combat is satisfying and challenging. You get to one-hit generic stormtroopers as well as duel advanced STs who wield a variety of electric batons. Also, slicing through an imperial R2 unit and seeing the still-glowing shear of its dome fall to the ground really hits the spot. The boss fights are OK, but nothing special. However, the final boss fight is one of the greatest parts in the game, so if you’re struggling to finish due to boredom, keep on it.

I have no complaints about the story. It’s not KOTOR quality, but it will satisfy Star Wars fans. The adventures are meaningful and make sense. The voice acting was good, and the actor’s likenesses were used when possible, which was interesting, but also broke the immersion a bit. Overall I give this game a B.

Would’ve been nice to have a quick navy option so you do not have to travel the ridiculous maps back and first just to leave. I beat the game in a few days with upper 80% completion, and to be honest, I think I’m just fine with it... it’s just too frustrating to navigate the maps for a missing area for a box with a new poncho design, or worse, nothing... I will say this, I have most of the force skills now, and fighting finally feels fun and not painful. I really liked the main character, but had little care for most of the supporting cast. To be fair, this game is really not my favorite style, I’m more of an open world rpg that you can play for a year, not a week. And most of that week was frustrating not relaxing, why pay money for added stress?! Expand

Really fun. My review would have been a 10 except for a couple troublesome bugs. I fell through walls a couple times. All in all a rewarding original star wars
Story where you get to be a Jedi. It has limited replay value so might be best to wait for it to go on sale.

The graphics are good. The battle mechanics are just ok.. should have copied Dark souls 1:1. The Order 66 memories are awesome and the Vader appearance is perfect. Sadly the overall story is only good, if you do not know the Vader Comics. In the comics Vader finds a holocron with a list of force sensitive child's and destroyed it. He didn't want to give the emperor a chance to find another apprentice. So why should he act differently a few years later? For me this is my dissapointment of the year. It shows how low expectations for a good star Wars game have been set. I miss original ideas

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright this my first review for any game.

My hopes were a little Dim and dull about this game when I was hearing about it, I didn’t trust EA with a single player RPG set during the same time as the force unleashed and Rogue one, I was hesitant to see how they’d make a cannon storyline that wouldn’t interfere with the movies.

I can say that this Game succeeds as an amazing Star Wars experience, the issues with the game are merely with the Combat and the lack of more customization with Kal Kestis.

Storyline it made perfect sense and gave me a perspective that I thought I already knew about but seeing the flashbacks where Kal remembers his master Jaro Topal training him and then order 66 being issued and witnessing it through the eyes of a Padawan and literally feeling powerless the first few boss fights. EA won me back over with this game they made a great game with an amazing storyline and it shows that they literally learned from the mistakes of the past games and they put time and effort into learning the whole Star Wars universe, the amount of detail into the worlds especially Dathomir blew me away.

Overall I give it a 9/10 would’ve been 7/10 due to the combat being aggravating at times and the fact that the biggest customization I have is the damn poncho... but the storyline after finishing the game it deserves no less then a 9/10 because they respected the lore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its great for the first couple of hours or so then it dawns on you how shallow it really is. The combat is clunky and given that most of the game is combat it needed to be better. First the camera will pan out so you cannot see whats happening on regular occasions which when you are required to block and parry with accuracy completely ruins it. Enemy's can suck you in with combat animations and will quite often glitch so they are stuck on a door or facing the wrong way etc... not to mention having to take down atst's with a light sabre just felt ridiculous, would have been better to just not include them. The platforming is pretty much poor mans tomb raider combined with a world map that's unreadable and endless back tracking with no fast travel gets old real fast. This game could have been so good but unfortunately it's crap and im not sure why all the high reviews, it may well be the best star wars game in a while but that doesn't say a lot. Expand

Force pulling one enemy towards yourself and impaling it on your beautifully customised lightsaber. Force pushing a whole bunch of lackeys off the side of a perched platform. Perfectly timing incoming blaster fire, redirecting it back towards its origin.

Gameplay is on point. Characters are interesting. Antagonistic likely more interesting than many of those in the film franchise.

This game has some good concepts, a reasonable story and interesting places to visit. It is marred in bad design decisions and poor implementation. Most games have a couple questionable design decisions but this game is riddled with them ultimately having a very negative impact on what could have been a great game.

Let's start with the worst (of many worse) offenders - no fast travel.

Every other game in a semi-open world has fast travel. This is important for several reasons. Firstly it allows you to put things in out of the way places and yet still make it reasonable to expect players to find it (or try). Secondly it allows you to build large areas and quickly move the player back to where they can continue on without wasting their time. Respawn has absolutely no respect for players' time and therefore didn't implement this. In small areas this wouldn't be a big deal but you are spending more time backtracking over and over again through the same areas and enemies that it is an utter waste of your time and an insult to gamers. Don't even try justifying it by saying there are "plot points" that occur sometimes during traversal that you'd miss. Other devs solved this problem a decade ago. In this day and age there is absolutely no reason for not having fast travel in a game of this size. You will end up spending a lot of time having to traverse from the start of a planet to the end even if you really just need to get something in the middle. That is because most planets have areas that you get to and then cannot go back but have to keep going forward. Then you get the pleasure of having to retrace your steps. Even a simple "go back to ship" would have been a step up. This alone causes a major drop in score.

The second (worst) feature is the free running. When it works it works OK but it doesn't work well half the time and the other half it is just buggy. It is clear that dev team didn't implement this properly and the QA team didn't test all the scenarios. I died more times free running because of horrific controls, bad camera angles and bugs than any other place in the game. It is clear they thought it was important but it is like racing game where the steering is off. It is so much a part of the game that being broken is not acceptable. I can't count the # of times where I was sliding down something (a common theme) and had almost no control over where I was going so I slid off, over and over again. And the checkpoints tend to restart you at the top which means you have to keep trying and there is absolutely no way to avoid it once you start. These same areas are where you tended to have to jump gaps, clearly land on the other side but the game decides to either have you fall through the ground and die or have you slide backwards until you fall off. Tomb Raider this isn't. I've played games where free running was a minimal addon that did a better job.

Another area where it is just a bad design is the save system. Checkpoints are often laid out so far (and you have to free run between them) that you tend to lose a lot of progress through no fault of your own. The concept of having to return to an enemy and hit them to get your XP back is not uncommon this day and age but it would have been better tied to difficulty than mandatory. As mentioned earlier, if it was an enemy you could get it back but often it is the insta-death free running. Losing 15+ minutes of effort because of bad design is just not good. Also, having enemies respawn in order to retain your work is just not a good design.

Cal is probably the weakest Jedi I've ever played. He can't even jump over anything above his knees. His force powers are underwhelming and clearly focus on combat but even then he is just weak. His force bar is also small (even late in the game) and you only regain force by attacking people so it is quite easy to get into a tougher fight with a boss and not be able to use any powers because you cannot get close enough to hit them. Again, good concept combined with bad design.

Overall the game had potential and the collectibles (while worthless gamewise) are interesting to find. But Respawn seems to want to punish you for doing anything outside the main story. Finding collectibles or going to areas you may not normally visit often require free running (which is broken) or fighting enemies that are difficult (which means you have to save which resets everybody or risk dying). I don't understand why a dev would create a world and then punish players for wanting to see everything in it.

The game looks great, sounds great, and I liked the main character. The RPG "skill point" system was also nice, allowing you to progressively make your character better in the ways that matched your play style. And the story, that I played up until, was good. I liked it. It wasn't amazing, but it definitely drew me in enough that I wanted to know what was going to happen next.

Now for the negatives, starting with combat. Lots of people seem to love the combat. For me, I would recommend the combat of Dark Souls over the combat in this game, even to non-gamers. The timing of parries/blocks and the hitboxes in this game are maddeningly awful. Even when I turned the difficulty all the way down to "Story", which gives you the least enemy aggression and the largest window for parrying, it was still awful. In fact, it was worst on "Story" difficulty because enemies will sometimes stand in front of you for *minutes* without doing anything if you let them, which is entirely too passive to be interesting. But you'll be trying to reflect a blaster shot and sometimes it works, even when the shot is like 10 feet to your right, and sometimes you'll block and still get hit in the chest because it didn't register your guard. Same thing with melee fights but worse because if you get hit by the first light attack in a chain, your character is so bad at fighting that they just can't block mid-chain so you either need to find an opportunity to dodge-roll away or you just take the damage. And then even if you do roll away, the game technically punishes you for not parrying blows. Enemies have block gauges and when you parry you can take a chunk of that gauge away. But even on "common" enemies, you have to parry at least three times, but the block gauge regenerates after a few seconds of not taking a hit, so if you dodge away you might be letting the enemy regenerate all that hard work you've done up to that point. And don't even think about using your own light attack chains to deplete it, because all enemies will always block if they have the gauge for it and they will always parry you somewhere in your chain. Always.

This wouldn't be awful if not for the "rest" mechanic, which literally resets all enemies on the map. You see, you get a limited number of healing items which only replenish when you rest. You can't find more of them in the field so resting is literally the only way to get more healing items. But if you just finished a really hard fight near a save point, and then you rest to get back all your healing items, any difficult enemies you defeated are back and potentially blocking your path forward. It's not enjoyable to use up all your healing items on a mini-boss, save your progress, replenish your supplies, and then have to fight him all over again. Probably requiring you to replenish your healing items all over again, thus starting the never-ending cycle of pain. This wouldn't be so bad if combat was actually compelling and competent. But again, your main character is a terrible fighter and should probably die in most fights because every action he takes is drawn out, slow, inefficient.

Other nit-picks include force power not regenerating over time. It's the force, you always have the ability to use it, it's just your only constitution that determines how often you can pull off tricks. You shouldn't have to hit enemies constantly to use force powers in battle, it doesn't make sense. Also, if you are going to reset all enemies after resting, then you should be able to replenish healing items on the map somehow, without resting. That or the main character needs some kind of slow health regen. Finally, your character somehow forgot all the basic force stuff, like pushing and pulling, which seems ridiculous because he effectively uses force pull at the beginning of the game and then has to re-learn it later to actually use it whenever he wants.

Overall, I think Control spoiled me. I played it through t completion before even touching Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. It had a great combat system with supernatural abilities similar to Jedi force powers. In fact, if you re-skinned Control with Star Wars, it would have made a substantially better Jedi game than this. Can't recommend this game, but I can recommend Control if you want to basically have Jedi powers, just with a supernatural theme.

The story is compelling and the character development is fairly good, the graphics and gameplay is detailed and the sound/music is spot on although there were a few times when enemies T-posed when they spawned and it took a few seconds for the environment to render but those issues are trivial in comparison to the whole of the game. The combat is incredible because it is challenging enough that you just can't hack and slash your way through the game but you're not forced to use your force powers all the time, I spent most of my fights parrying and dodging instead of using the slow ability. I played it on Jedi Master because I wanted the challenge and the game certainly delivers on that part, I believe I died against the final boss fight about 16 times before I got the hang of the fight but the key thing is that the none of the fights felt cheap and you don't have to fight the camera to see what is going on.

Jedi Fallen Order is one of the best games in the Star Wars franchise and one of the best games of 2019. It has some sore spots, but the story, characters, worlds, and combat more than make up for its shortcomings. Fans of Star Wars will love it. Fans of action/adventure games will have a fantastic time. It is great to finally see Respawn branch out and get a chance to craft something they clearly have a passion for. This is not a game to be missed and gives me hope for the future of the series.
