This has definitely been one of Sonic’s best years in recent times and I thoroughly enjoyed Sonic Mania this year, so to say I was looking forward to Sonic Forces would be quite the understatement. Thankfully Sonic Forces does more than enough to scratch my itch, but it is lacking in certain areas and it’s not as good as Sonic Mania. I will say though that the game has some fresh ideas, and I especially loved the inclusion of creating your own character. They’ve done this really well and there are more than enough items to keep you satisfied. The levels in the game are something I really enjoyed, and that was mainly down to the amount of creativeness used in each level. The levels would have been even better if they were a bit longer and I thought they missed a trick here. The gameplay plays well most of the time, but the controls aren’t always responsive which is a massive problem in a game like this. Another problem was that the controls always seemed to fail at the worst times and this made me become very frustrated, so hopefully they manage to patch this. I would also like them to make the game more challenging because it can be too easy for its own good at times. I know some people who didn’t like the story in the game, but I wasn’t one of them and in fact I found it quite enjoyable, and I thought the voice actors did a good job. The presentation side of the game is absolutely brilliant in my opinion. Visually the game is packed full of colour and the cartoon style works brilliantly. The soundtrack in the game was probably my most favourite in a Sonic game to date, which is great. At the end of the day Sonic Forces may not be the best Sonic game of all time and it may suffer with a few problems here and there, but there is more than enough here to satisfy a great number of people. Without a doubt it gets more right than it gets wrong and in the end I enjoyed my time with the blue hedgehog, which is the most important thing. Expand

So when I heard that Sonic Forces was going to be a game like sonic unleashed, a dark story, a new engine, a boost to win title on next-gen consoles, and a fresh coat a paint for the series, I couldn't wait for it! Unfortunately, this game didn't live up to the previous games released along with sonic mania. Heres my review!

Plot: No spoilers for obvious reasons, but to sum things up. Sonic is defeated and apparently "tortured" for 6 months, in that time frame, Eggman takes over 99% of the world, which causes sonic's friends along with your custom character (called Avatar or Rookie) to create a resistance (star wars much?) to stop Eggman and defeat his new creation, Infinite. They later meet back up with tails and classic sonic, coming back from Sonic Mania to complete its story or something? Though this story is interesting, its execution is horrible, and the later parts of the story suck due to the villains being dumb as rocks and a force message about teamwork or something. Not a good way to do a "dark" story, oh and sonic wasn't tortured if he is still happy and go lucky. 3/10

Gameplay: It's split up into three sections, Modern Sonic, Avatar, and Classic Sonic. Modern Sonic is the same boost to win formula as the previous games since sonic unleashed. It's well done, and nice to see again, but I wish it were more of a different take on speedy 3d platforming. The avatar gameplay is decent, you get to make your character and uses his wisp power to get through the level somewhat like the Modern Sonic stages. They're alright, not much, but nice to play. Then we get Classic Sonic... Sigh. Boy, was Classic Sonic wasted. Its just CS from Generations again, and the stages are kinda dull, and it controls awful. They should have removed him and had more stages with the Avatar and Modern Sonic. Speaking of Modern Sonic and Avatar, they have some stages where you play as both trying to get to the end of the level, using double boost at least once during the stage, they're better, but nothing special again. It seems like Sonic Team played it safe with this game, and it backfired severely in they're faces. They should have done a new gameplay style like Sonic Lost World or Mario Oddsey, the boost to win formula should have been retired before this game because it's not 100% fun anymore like Generations or Unleashed. It was still fun, but not as fun as I would have liked. 5/10

Audio: The soundtrack is one of the best in the Sonic series, it's more cinematic, but its also filled with more sonic like music like fist bump and infinite's themes. More songs would be nice though, but still high quality. 9/10

Bosses: Disappointing as well, the mini-bosses are way too easy, and the FInal Boss is also a joke. Take one look at the final boss (if you completed the game) and tell me it's not like the one from Colors and Lost World! 3/10

Summary: Sonic Forces is a huge disappointment for me. The boost to win gameplay is fun, and so is the avatar and double gameplay. The soundtrack is fantastic and is one of the best sonic soundtracks along with sonic mania. However, the story, while it has a good idea, it's not well executed and a huge disappointment, it's not even that dark! Not to mention the Classic Sonic gameplay is pointless and can be removed from the game, and nothing would change. I wish this could have been the game to bring 3d sonic to the next gen, but instead, it has me wishing for more, and for someone else to give this series some justice just like Sonic Mania did. Sega, if you're listening to this, please let someone else make a sonic game, enough of the hedgehog engine, enough of Denuvo DRM and crashes, please have it open world or whatever with no DRM, and something that's not 2d again and helps gives the franchise some new life. Also, P.S. DON'T RUSH IT!

Why did Sega made a option to create our oc in a sonic game where we don't really feel all that important, why does classic sonic feels shoe horned with his levels being slow clunky and level designers workers who have no experiences with sonic, why does every stages are quick to end, why does sometimes the music are good but does not feels fit with the level theme, why did they reuse old enemies if we only fight Zavok Metal Sonic but not Chaos or Shadow, how come the new villain infinite feels rush with his characteristics and personality, why did they reuse the metal sonic boss fight 4 times in a row, why are they reusing lines from older games, how come sonic friends are uninteresting and bland with bad acting, how come our oc feels too overpower with just guns, why did they brought the wisps back if they have nothing to do with the story plot including the final boss from colors, why do they make characters who mostly talk and do nothing else, why am I even wasting talking my patience talking about this game. 4/10 This game felt like a mockery of the sonic franchise than a game made by the ones that brought colors and generations and I was very very very very very very disappointed. Lemme just get the good outta the way, because there isn't much.
First off, the music. I keep hearing mixed opinions about the OST for this game, but personally, I think MOST of it is brilliant. There are some really neat tunes I could never see myself getting tired of like Sunset Heights, the final boss music. In fact, a lot of Sonic and the avatar stages music are really good and they have a unique style. I can just listen to it and I know it's from Sonic Forces. Classic Sonic's music however... yeah. I'd rather stick bananas in my ears than listen to that trash. You're better off just muting the game. And I did say that the music for the stages were good, outside of that (cutscenes, menus, etc) are suckish and they sound way too generic.
Alrighty. That's all the good I can think of. Now let's get into why this game would be better off if it didn't exist.
Starting with the graphics. They did make a big deal about the new engine called the Hedgehog Engine 2, but... I don't see where the 2 is coming from. Honestly, this game when it comes to graphics looks very underwhelming. After Sonic Unleashed which came out at 2008, this is not what I was expecting from next gen consoles at all. It looks worse than Unleashed. The artstyle too. They need to stop with this style of the realistic environments, and then have weird cartoony particles that look like they were borrowed from from Lost World. Just pick an artstyle and stick with it.
The story was being hyped up to be somewhere along the lines of an Adventure styled game. Did they deliver? ... Not even close. This plot is a mess. Doesn't even qualify as a Saturday morning cartoon episode. You can tell they were trying to be epic, but what they put out is THE corniest and most cringe worthy story and presentation I've ever seen in a Sonic game. You just know they didn't really care and they just wanted to utilize all the plot points for marketing because in the actual game, NONE of it is explored.
And the characters! *sigh* They need to hire some actually writers that for the next game. Ever since Colors, Sonic and everyone else has turned into the most boring, bland, bare, dry, 2 dimensional characters ever. Zero character development. Half the cast have no clear role. And everyone besides Sonic is useless. Sonic been missing for 6 months and Eggman takes over the world. And what exactly has the Knuckles and everyone else been doing? ... Heh. Just nothing. Sonic is presumed dead, he's been tortured by Eggman for 6 months and what does do when he escapes from captivity? Makes a butt kicking joke, and is cheesy as he's ever been. It's implied that Tails has "lost it" after Sonic is assumed to be dead, but when we see Tails, he's perfectly fine. Through out the entire game, nobody changes, nobody has MVP moments, there's nothing. No reason why a story like this needs to be told. And the rest of the cast, you could literally shuffle everyone's lines and you wouldn't notice it. The characters are talking pieces of wood. There's ZERO appeal.
Gameplay? Right. This is a game after all. They even managed to mess this up. Everyone from Sonic Team when they worked on Colors and Generations is gone. Now we have ammeter devs. Greeeeeat. Just the perfect thing to do with your AAA iconic franchise that's been going at it for almost 3 decades. OK. Red flag number 1, but they had plenty of source material to work off of. Unleashed, Colors, Generations. But they STILL managed to come out with trash. The controls took a step back from Generation and feel like they came from PS1 when ppl were experimenting with 3d. There's no fun to be had whatsoever. levels are 30 seconds long, old assets, missing features, just... how they manage to devolve into something even less complex than Sonic Adventure?
I could go on, but I don't wanna hit the character cap of 5000, so lemme just summarize it all with this. Some, or maybe a lot of people NEED to be fired because the people at SEGA and Sonic Team have absolutely NO idea what the fan base wants. And it's quiet simple. A GOOD GAME. Sop with the BS, get some ppl who actually care about making Sonic good like the Mania devs. Games are art, but not when it's a game where you have NO passion for. Hire some real story and character writers, hire some real game designers, hire some real devs that actually know what Sonic is supposed to be.

your goal is to run through the games 30 stages and reclaim the world for team sonic...
only problem is sonic can’t do it alone, he needs your help after he’s snatched up…
A rookie is called in to aid to sonic..
    And that rookie is you...
You create your own character out of pretty limited choices and you set out to reclaim territories and help team sonic on different missions…
There are sos missions where you play as other created characters for rewards, there are bonus missions, and again 30 regular missions…
Sonic forces is a really enjoyable and fun game…
unfortunately this is an extremely casual sonic game as well, geared more towards children than sonic vets…
It has the typical things from the sonic formula... rings counting as your health... running really fast and dashing through enemies…
    but failing is practically impossible…
My issue with sonic mania was that I felt it wasn’t casual enough as levels were way too long to go off of a life system… and sonic forces goes the complete opposite of having extremely short levels with infinite lives.. if you lose your rings its back to the checkpoint…
This is really just a score chasing game…
the level design is great, the worlds is beautiful, there’s decent music… but the best feeling levels are over before they even feel like they begin.. making it hard for any stage here to be memorable…
but this 2 and a half hour long campaign does mix things up as it switches through your character, regular sonic, and classic sonic… all 3 handling differently…
With classic sonic stages giving you a little more challenge, but still not much..
With your character you’re able to use different weapons you unlock as you play to shoot enemies all with their own perks in level like invincibility, or turning enemies into ice cubes giving you coins...
All of this to try and obtain a levels s rank which will get you more clothing items to customize your character, as will completing the games different challenges… giving the player reason to go back and play these levels…
But being so easy… hardly any timing here, which is that makes 3d sonic games so addicting.. And it’s completely missing...
This game is really just shoot enemies while sonic runs forward... ocassionally take down a boss and repeat..
    I never felt engaged…
And while it doesn’t feel like a real sonic game, and there’s hardly challenge or addictive qualities...
I enjoyed my time with this game... Its fun…
This is a very decent baby’s first sonic game…
    I Give Sonic Forces

Ill divide my review on various parts, to explain my opinion as pure as possible:

    STORY:

Its kinda good, not gonna lie. For the "GOOD" part, the idea of Eggman actually ruling the entire world for various months is pretty nice, and the fact he actually tortured Sonic for once its... pretty interesting i would say... also, including old and new bosses adds a nice touch (old, talking about Chaos and Metal Sonic, and new, talking about zavok).

for the "OK" part, the introduction of infinite is kinda weird, because you need to play Episode Shadow to understand how all begins, which is not a very nice decision from Sega, but i will let it pass...

And the implementation of the OC Avatar is very simple, just a survivor that wanted to join the resistance isnt very attractive.

for the "Not Good" part, Classic Sonic appeared just out of nowhere, not even sure how or why the idea of Classic Sonic appearing out of nowhere was a cool idea :(

also, in some of the trailers of the game, you see shadow as part of the bad guys, when in the game you cant even fight him (either Chaos) which is kinda disappointing, but oh well...

    PLAYABILITY/GAME ASPECTS:

Its ok... its not like they introduced something new to the playability (because we have the casual Modern Sonic running the same line all over again, Classic Sonic with the 2D enviroment), except the things that the OC Avatar can do, that can change depending of the animal you choose, which it add a bit more of replay value, but excluding that, its just like any other sonic game (this doesnt mean thats bad... just kinda repetitive)

About the game aspects, for the "GOOD" part, voice acting is good and the quality is nice in all versions of the game, pretty smooth and good looking.

in the "OK" part, the AI of the NPCs isnt as good as previous games, in the Modern Sonic stages they dont even try to hurt you, which is kinda understandable, since the main goal of those stages is just run in a straight line, but it makes it too easy IMO, they should at least try to hurt you, not just be there, wasting space. In the Classic Sonic stages, they look ok.

And in Modern Sonic stages, the checkpoints hitbox seems kinda weird, you can "kinda" go thru it, small detail, since again, the main goal is just run until you reach the end, but its hitbox should be complete.

The stages are fun and pretty colorful, packed with a bit of that nostalgia and feelings, depending of the situations

    DIFFICULTY:

its too easy, comparing it with other sonic games (not as easy as oddysey, but thats a different franchise), the NPCs dont really try to hurt you, they are pretty easy to avoid and destroy as well, most of the stages can be completed very quickly, and overall, you can complete the game in 2 hours, or even less, and im not talking about speedrunning the game... which IMO is not that good, but moving that to a side, some (not all) of the stages can take 2 or 3 tries to understand where you need to go and where you should fall.

    OVERALL:

its ok. As a Sonic fan myself, i think this game had too much hype (and i was hyped too), but im kinda dissapointed, since some things are not as the Trailers promised. But is not as bad some people told me it was going to be, either is as good some people told me too...

Its enjoyable at least, and it gives some fresh air with the OC thing (which im not a fan of, but apparently it was well received, so, i guess ill let that pass too) and i can say its better than Lost World and Boom.

Should you buy it? If you want, or if you are a big Sonic fan, but i wouldnt say this is a title you should really get...

The environments are beautiful, the story is rich with many characters, and the level design is also good. Not on par with Sonic Generations but definitely as good as Sonic Colours. Yes, there are some linear parts but all sonic games have them, but Sonic Forces does provide interesting pathways for you to go through. The earlier levels are quite linear but as you go through the game it gets a lot better. Plus what adds to the replayability is the custom character's Wispons, which also provide alternates path for the character. The boss fights are also very fun to play and challenging, you're gonna have a good time beating all the bosses in the game.

Speaking of custom character, i'm not really into making oc's and customizing, but the game provides you so many extra accessories for completing extra tasks and getting higher ranks and levels, I found myself going back to the custom character's room to see what's new and what fits my liking. I think that's a huge thing for people who are into character customization.

Modern Sonics levels are also pretty fun to play through, although I should mention that the drift is now removed so sonic team have taken a step backwards in terms of controls for Modern Sonic. But the level design is very fun, again, it has linear sections but later in the game the level design really picks up.

Now let's talk about the elephant in the room, Classic Sonic. I was skeptical about classic sonic going into the game like many others, but I gotta say, it's not that bad and I was quite pleasantly surprised. The levels have many multiple pathways and the controls and physics are better than Generations. That being said, it's no where near as good as Sonic Mania but I think that was bound to happen.

So overall, I enjoyed the game from the start and I'd definitely recommend it to Sonic fans but also casual platforming fans. My only complaint is that Modern Sonic's controls could have been better.

If anything, Eggman would be the communist, since world domination is literally a goal of that ideology which killed more than 100 million innocent lives. Keep political propaganda out of games aimed at kids/youth.

If you're going to introduce a new character, or even a recurring character, there should be an explanation as to how/why that character is even in the game in the first place! If you're gonna just throw in some fan-favorite characters, or spam the "create clone" story crutch, or make yet another failure of a deep, dark story, the music, gameplay and/or level design should make up for it! At the end of the short and non-challenging gameplay, it feels like so many things in this game were just recycled and downgraded.

Sonic Forces is overall an absolute blast for both fans of the series and newcomers alike! Now, I do feel that the controls need a bit of fine tuning, and that, while not necessarily bad, the story does at times leave a lot to be desired. Even so, none of these issues have ruined my enjoyment of the game as a whole. If you liked Generations and Colors, you’ll probably enjoy this one, too!

The game is very good overall, music, art, graphics, gameplay, amount of phases, history and its most serious mood among several other things.

And 3D parts were left with the running and kill enemies in sequence, lacked a balance, this happened to Sonic Colors also and did not like there.

Otherwise the game is very good, they are on the right track, if they improve some things like the one I mentioned, the future games will get better and better.

Sonic Forces is a well crafted game that definitely was worth the wait and anticipation. The story is well crafted and not so serious that it forgets that the main character is a super fast blue hedgehog against a fat egg shaped doctor who builds robots. It actually managed to tread new ground and give us a story we've never truly seen in a modern Sonic Game. Gameplay wise it is very fun and bridges the three generations of Sonic games well. The classic 2D side scrolling days with Classic Sonic. The adventure formula kicked up a notch with the custom character. He/she has gadgets that you can customize to make him/her handle how you want. He/she also has a homing attack similar to Sonic with his grapple claw that handles slightly different from Sonic's homing attack just to make sure that they don't feel too samey without making them feel too different. Modern Sonic handles identical to the way he did in Sonic Colors. He has the boost, slam, homing attack, double jump, and slide kick. He doesn't have the drift which isn't a big deal considering the level design is made with this omission in mind. The soundtrack is awesome. This game has come to be my 3rd favorite Sonic game ever. I love this game and guess what? The custom character unlocks are in game unlocks as opposed to loot boxes! Big plus there. Expand

Great game, however levels a bit too short. Story is a bit lack lustered. Classic sonic physics aren't great. Everything else though is good. Great graphics, great gameplay. there is a lot of replay-ability n this game. Definitely worth its price.

Great !! The Game feel like an Evolution From Sonic Colors and Generations. Great Music, Story, Gameplay and more. And i also like the section between 2D and 3D. i think people only said that Forces is bad because they are jealous how good Sonic Games is. Honestly, much more better then Mario

    this game is awesome
and follows the boost formula perfectly from unleashed and generations and colors
if you really enjoy playing the previous boost games i recommend you to play this one as well dont care about the biased ratings it doesn't make any sense that they gave colors and generations such good ratings while forces is getting more hate than positive ratings forces is a mix

It's business as usual for dear old Sonic. Which isn't necessarily a very good thing. [Jan 2018, p.82]

For the first time in years, I actually enjoyed and looked forward to going back to a Sonic game and will continue to hunt those red star rings for a while yet. But the main USP of the avatars let the side down. I really hope Sonic Team continue with the duel Sonic crossover games as they seem to be providing them with their best output in years.

Sonic Forces is a mixed bag, but the bad outweighs the good. Its few bright spots - mostly in the form of classic Sonic - get dimmed by the muddled mess of the weaker elements, and the lack of content doesn't help. The game's biggest achievement is the reminder of old school Sonic's superior gameplay.
