When I first heard of sonic forces I thought it was gonna be a good modern 3d game for once cause it's been a while since Sega gave one like Unleashed so when I saw some trailers for it I saw not so good acting with bland written dialogue and how levels doesn't feel all that appealing and I was starting to get worried and when it came it I began questioning myself. Why did Sega made a option to create our oc in a sonic game where we don't really feel all that important, why does classic sonic feels shoe horned with his levels being slow clunky and level designers workers who have no experiences with sonic, why does every stages are quick to end, why does sometimes the music are good but does not feels fit with the level theme, why did they reuse old enemies if we only fight Zavok Metal Sonic but not Chaos or Shadow, how come the new villain infinite feels rush with his characteristics and personality, why did they reuse the metal sonic boss fight 4 times in a row, why are they reusing lines from older games, how come sonic friends are uninteresting and bland with bad acting, how come our oc feels too overpower with just guns, why did they brought the wisps back if they have nothing to do with the story plot including the final boss from colors, why do they make characters who mostly talk and do nothing else, why am I even wasting talking my patience talking about this game. 4/10 This game felt like a mockery of the sonic franchise than a game made by the ones that brought colors and generations and I was very very very very very very disappointed. Lemme just get the good outta the way, because there isn't much.
First off, the music. I keep hearing mixed opinions about the OST for this game, but personally, I think MOST of it is brilliant. There are some really neat tunes I could never see myself getting tired of like Sunset Heights, the final boss music. In fact, a lot of Sonic and the avatar stages music are really good and they have a unique style. I can just listen to it and I know it's from Sonic Forces. Classic Sonic's music however... yeah. I'd rather stick bananas in my ears than listen to that trash. You're better off just muting the game. And I did say that the music for the stages were good, outside of that (cutscenes, menus, etc) are suckish and they sound way too generic.
Alrighty. That's all the good I can think of. Now let's get into why this game would be better off if it didn't exist.
Starting with the graphics. They did make a big deal about the new engine called the Hedgehog Engine 2, but... I don't see where the 2 is coming from. Honestly, this game when it comes to graphics looks very underwhelming. After Sonic Unleashed which came out at 2008, this is not what I was expecting from next gen consoles at all. It looks worse than Unleashed. The artstyle too. They need to stop with this style of the realistic environments, and then have weird cartoony particles that look like they were borrowed from from Lost World. Just pick an artstyle and stick with it.
The story was being hyped up to be somewhere along the lines of an Adventure styled game. Did they deliver? ... Not even close. This plot is a mess. Doesn't even qualify as a Saturday morning cartoon episode. You can tell they were trying to be epic, but what they put out is THE corniest and most cringe worthy story and presentation I've ever seen in a Sonic game. You just know they didn't really care and they just wanted to utilize all the plot points for marketing because in the actual game, NONE of it is explored.
And the characters! *sigh* They need to hire some actually writers that for the next game. Ever since Colors, Sonic and everyone else has turned into the most boring, bland, bare, dry, 2 dimensional characters ever. Zero character development. Half the cast have no clear role. And everyone besides Sonic is useless. Sonic been missing for 6 months and Eggman takes over the world. And what exactly has the Knuckles and everyone else been doing? ... Heh. Just nothing. Sonic is presumed dead, he's been tortured by Eggman for 6 months and what does do when he escapes from captivity? Makes a butt kicking joke, and is cheesy as he's ever been. It's implied that Tails has "lost it" after Sonic is assumed to be dead, but when we see Tails, he's perfectly fine. Through out the entire game, nobody changes, nobody has MVP moments, there's nothing. No reason why a story like this needs to be told. And the rest of the cast, you could literally shuffle everyone's lines and you wouldn't notice it. The characters are talking pieces of wood. There's ZERO appeal.
Gameplay? Right. This is a game after all. They even managed to mess this up. Everyone from Sonic Team when they worked on Colors and Generations is gone. Now we have ammeter devs. Greeeeeat. Just the perfect thing to do with your AAA iconic franchise that's been going at it for almost 3 decades. OK. Red flag number 1, but they had plenty of source material to work off of. Unleashed, Colors, Generations. But they STILL managed to come out with trash. The controls took a step back from Generation and feel like they came from PS1 when ppl were experimenting with 3d. There's no fun to be had whatsoever. levels are 30 seconds long, old assets, missing features, just... how they manage to devolve into something even less complex than Sonic Adventure?
I could go on, but I don't wanna hit the character cap of 5000, so lemme just summarize it all with this. Some, or maybe a lot of people NEED to be fired because the people at SEGA and Sonic Team have absolutely NO idea what the fan base wants. And it's quiet simple. A GOOD GAME. Sop with the BS, get some ppl who actually care about making Sonic good like the Mania devs. Games are art, but not when it's a game where you have NO passion for. Hire some real story and character writers, hire some real game designers, hire some real devs that actually know what Sonic is supposed to be.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY, or at least wait for it to go on sale. As a long time fan and customer I don't appreciate the low-quality and rushed overall product. If anything, Eggman would be the communist, since world domination is literally a goal of that ideology which killed more than 100 million innocent lives. Keep political propaganda out of games aimed at kids/youth.

If you're going to introduce a new character, or even a recurring character, there should be an explanation as to how/why that character is even in the game in the first place! If you're gonna just throw in some fan-favorite characters, or spam the "create clone" story crutch, or make yet another failure of a deep, dark story, the music, gameplay and/or level design should make up for it! At the end of the short and non-challenging gameplay, it feels like so many things in this game were just recycled and downgraded.

Sonic Forces has levels that are either shallow, gimmicky and boring or just broken, with just a few exceptions in the whole game. Sonic 3D controls are correct but incomplete, lacking Drift and Air Dash. Sonic 2D controls are decent. Avatar's controls are a mess, the character goes from walking to dashing in a second, even if you slightly press the stick and this results in cheap deaths because of the levels that don't fit in this control scheme because you have to walk longer than a second before jumping and just before jumping you accidentally dash and fall off.

The first levels of Sonic Forces are disappointing and the last levels are infuriating. Two boss battles are fine and creative (Zavok and Mystic Jungle Infinite), two of the three battles against Infinite are confusing and the final battle is challenging in the wrong way. The music and presentation is the best that the game has to offer, since the story relies too heavily on negative feelings and death in a serious way instead of cartoony and comical like before. The first time you play the game you'll get tons of notices with useless cosmetics for your avatar. This is not the worst Sonic game ever but it's certainly the most disappointing. If Sonic Generations is 10/10, this is 1/10.

Not only the worst sonic game I've ever played but the worst game I've ever played. I wouldn't give this game to my worst enemy. Unfinished levels, controls are horrible, the music isn't even good, level layouts bad, tried charging you extra money for super sonic. Just skip this, it's horrible. Horrible writing as well.

Nothing to see here folks, just another boring ass unmemorable sonic game, that fails to add anything new to the franchise. It's not as bad as sonic 06, or sonic boom. Before I forget, the story is uninspired and the characters are boring and the voice acting is below average. Sega needs to decide if they're going to ride with the sonic they've been making or to actually fully make the transition and bring sonic into the modern gaming, i.e. online play, stimulating graphics, and a real captivating story. This is was sonic needs to be for it to survive on the ps4 and xbox one. Finally the gameplay and boring ass levels speak for itself. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Forces Is a boring game that while not unreedemable It Is still In my opinion one of Sonics Worst outings. 1st with the positive. The graphics and character animations are pretty good. The music Is pretty good. Some levels like Egg Gate and The Custom Hero Capital City are quite good along with the tag team levels. Voice acting Is quite good and messing around In the Custom hero Customisation Is fun. With that out of the way let's go Into why I don't like this game. The story and dialouge Is complete dumpster fire with a lot of miss potiental especially with the new villian Infinite who Is given such a pathetic back story In a pretty useless Dlc pack. There's so much stupid moments from claiming Sonic Is tortured for months but when you see him he Is completly fine. Classic Sonic being there all cause of marketing since 2011s Sonic Generations was a hit. Many things In the story just happen off screen and are only explained during text on a black screen. Finally Tails Is so stupid In this game. The moment where they say "He's gone insane" when he clearly Isin't and then got scared by Chaos 0 made me want to throw my controller at my screen. Infinite Is a weak villian which sucks since the marketing and his design made him look so cool but In the game he Is just so terrible. His motivation for being a villian was because Shadow called Him childish names. I am not jokeing It Is as sad as It sounds. Enough about the dreadful story let's talk about the gameplay. Theres 3 type of gameplay styles. 1st Mordern Sonic. What The Hell did they do to him? When he runs It's so off because unlike previous games like Colours Unleashed and Generations he doesen't slowly bulid up to the full speed but Instead after 2 seconds of moving he will blast off. This feels so unatural and especially doesen't help where your In a game with boringly designed levels. 2nd Custom Hero. Probably the best of the 3 but still not great. The wispon weapons are a cool Idea and sometimes can be fun in the levels but sadly ruined by again levels that are super boring. Could of been a great Idea If the levels were fun. And finally Classic Sonic. NOPE. That's all I need to say. Also his level music Is trash. That green hill level makes my ears bleed with that music. As I mentioned previous there are positives with this game but overall Sonic Forces was a complete disapointment from jank controls to a terrible story with boring levels and tons of miss potiential. I ocasionally go back to speed run the ocasional Mordern Sonic level but thats It. Do not recommend. 4/10 Expand

For the first time in years, I actually enjoyed and looked forward to going back to a Sonic game and will continue to hunt those red star rings for a while yet. But the main USP of the avatars let the side down. I really hope Sonic Team continue with the duel Sonic crossover games as they seem to be providing them with their best output in years.

Sonic Forces is a mixed bag, but the bad outweighs the good. Its few bright spots - mostly in the form of classic Sonic - get dimmed by the muddled mess of the weaker elements, and the lack of content doesn't help. The game's biggest achievement is the reminder of old school Sonic's superior gameplay.
