    Leaked audio from inside FromSoftware:

"Dangit, players aren't parrying enough in the Dark Souls games! They're all just spamming magic or rolling around!"

"What if we made a game that was all parrying?"

    "Johnson, you're a genius."

*Sounds of truckloads of money crashing through the walls of FromSoftware HQ*

It's frustrating, but finally finishing the final boss gave me a real sense of satisfaction.

It's all awesome. The fighting somehow suits me much better than earlier soulslike. I'm a shinobi god! It feels good. The parrying makes all the difference, and I like not having to agonize over whether I use the right items on the right armour. Not all souls-fans will agree, and that's ok. For me, this is the ultimate game.

Sekiro challenges your patience, reflexes, and muscle memory. Once you overcome the hurdle that is relearning how to approach FromSoft's games, this game gets easier. It's no small task though, as I got pummeled until forcing myself to play this for what it is. A fast paced action game with unequaled and unforgiving satisfaction derived from combat.

+ Fun boss fights.
+ The game rewards you for exploration.
+ Japanese voice acting in this game is top-notch.
+ Lots of varied areas and enemies. You will fight humans, monkeys, monsters and more monkeys. Lots and lots of monkeys.

+- The game is very fast-paced. This is alright once you get used to it but might feel too hard while playing the game for the first few hours.
+- Some soundtracks were fun to listen to. Some were "ok".

    - While I like challenging games, this game felt too punishing. Getting hit two to four times while fighting bosses means you are dead. Moreover, some attacks are fast and will one-shot you which is something I haven't encountered in From's previous games. One-shots have always been clearly telegraphed in their previous games (remember Lorian's beam in DS3?) but for some reason they did not follow the same rule in this game.
    - It can take a long time trying to beat some bosses/mini bosses only for you to get killed for getting hit twice. Meh.
    - Headless.

Still, I kept at it, and the moment the combat clicked, I instantly saw it in an entirely new light. The combat is fast-paced and exhilarating, and every death is just another lesson. In order to build you up into a Shinobi killing machine, Sekiro first has to break you down repeatedly. And the game scales the difficulty as you go, making sure that there's always a new challenge to throw yourself at. The graphics are absolutely beautiful, and the story is also rich and compelling. 5.

Fantastic. One of my favorite games of all time. Pulse-pounding, beautifully precise combat. A little rough to get into, but once you're in the rhythm, it's a high like no other game I've played.

For noobs who have never played a hardcore game like me. This game will make you want to gouge your eyes out and bust your head through a fricken window. Prepare to focus focus focus. You slip up, you die. You get too confident, you die. You assume that you have an advantage, you die. Humble yourself before you purchase this masterpiece.

A great game that makes us exceed ourselves for each boss we face, a game that forces us to improve if we want to progress in the game, a type of game that we dont see everyday, a game like the old games that made us being much better and not a simple difficulty game like 99% of single player games nowadays.

Understand when to do what and the game is damn thrilling. With the intricate level design that's made the Dark Souls games so great and most of the FromSoftware DNA still intact. It's just the combat that has been reconfigured, and the end result is just as nuanced as any other game they've made.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It took me three years to finally beat this game. I picked this game up and expected dark souls with ninjas, and as a result this game destroyed my soul and I rage quit and didn’t return to it for 3 years. When I came back to it finally I stopped trying to play it like dark souls and played it like it is supposed to be played. This is an anti-souls game. The people who will have the most trouble with this game are people who love souls games and are expecting more of the same here. When I finally got it and the combat clicked boy did I fall in love with this game. This may be the best combat system in all of gaming. It’s fast, frenetic, and high risk/high reward. When you get it down it feels amazing. In some ways it’s like a rhythm game, each fight is a dance with its own pacing. The story here is some of Froms best work. It is subtle yet profound. The best example of this is seen in the games beginning and ending. The game is bookended as you fight the same bad guy (sort of) at the beginning of the game and again at the end (before the actual final boss) in the same location under similar circumstances. In the first scene at the games beginning wolf (Sekiro) fumbles to grab his sword, as he is at a low in his life having failed and been imprisoned. By the end of the game however, he smoothly grabs his sword without taking his eyes off his foe. He is confident now, he has been refined and grown from where he once was, he knows what he must do and he does it. That type of subtle character building is all over the game and I love it. The world is so well realized here, the characters are interesting, the atmosphere is great, the art style is beautiful, and the game design is unmatched. This game literally teaches you to be a master at it without you knowing. I struggled for hours at the beginning but by the time of my second play through I was able to fly through the game in half the time and best most of the bosses on my first try. The game is designed to teach you. It is brilliantly made and expertly crafted. The boss battles are brilliant and thrilling as well. I also want to just say that this game takes a HUGE risk and I respect the heck out of it for that. There are found endings to this game (a true ending, two normal endings, and a bad or evil ending) the evil ending can be chosen 2/3 through the game. As a result of you choose that path you miss out on one of the biggest and coolest locations in the game and roughly 5 main bosses. How many people have played this game and missed all that content and just thought “well I guess that’s it”?! That is crazy sauce! But I think that’s such a cool decision. Man this is an amazing game. I might even go so far to say that it is my favorite fromsoftware game yet (Elden Ring has not released yet so this might change for me). I give this game a 10 please try it for yourself! Expand

The graphics are even for 2022 very good. The story i not great, but not bad too. The combat system is the best i know, every fight feels great, of course it‘s not such flexible cause you have just one main weapon, but that not so important cause the developers did it to make a perfect balanced weapon which is just ultra fun to play with. Some people say because there‘s only one weapon which you cant upgrade it don‘t feel rewarding but most things you find have a reason why they are ingame. Most fun are the bosses many people say they are to difficult but they‘re just bad (and the first game from from software I played is elden ring which many peoply say is a ˋeasyˋ from software game and sekiro has arround the same difficulty) it just feel like a dance he hits, you parry, you hits he parry, sounds very boring but feel such great. For me although a great game it is somewhat overrated. Firstly the areas, the bosses/ mini bosses and most the enemies are very well designed. Not everyone will have the best of time playing this game, however, and could end up leaving it outrage. The reason for this is because of the aforementioned combat system that requires a lot of practice to get used to and to perfect usage of. Overall, this is an amazing game that pretty much has no complaints from my side.

The corollary of its obsessive refusal to countenance even a hint of compromise is the vast amount of satisfaction it provides when you do finally make those breakthroughs and progress to a new area. If you fancy yourself as a hardcore gamer, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the embodiment of what games are all about. [Issue#177, p.77]

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the breath of fresh air the "Soulsborne" sub-genre needed. It proves that stats, levelling-up, and equipment, is not what makes this kind of games. Instead, what matters is how death is treated, what sort of consequences there are for choices the player makes, and really big doors that open dramatically slow. The verticality of the level design, grappling hook, jumping and almost Zelda-style progression makes this one stand out in an ever increasing sea of imitators. Ultimately, this is more than just a sum of its parts; it's full of mystery, jaw-dropping spectacle and intense satisfaction.
