This is one of the greatest games I have ever played. It is so fun and the fact that it's extremely open world is also amazing. The graphics are spectacular. Sometimes it can get annoying because you can't save in missions and some of those missions take so long. Sometimes the game is too 'hardcore' for me so I need a break but I truly believe its the best game ever created.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, you assume the role of the outlaw-gunslinger Arthur Morgan. Throughout the game you will have to make choices that determine the man Arthur is. The game is spread out through 6 chapters. The intro mission in Chapter 1 combines strong visuals, voice acting, phenomenal music, and gameplay elements that you will use throughout the game. Rockstar has set the bar for written narratives in not just video games, but in entertainment as a whole. Arthur is the trusted associate to the gang's leader Dutch Van Der Linde, whom we met in the first Red Dead Redemption game. You get to learn about all members in the gang, you talk to them, sit around campfires with them, and go out on missions with them. The game has some of the most memorable quotes from all of video games, and some amazing dialogue between Arthur and characters throughout the game. Rockstar has also set the bar for open world games. Many games have advertised their open world as a "fully breathing and living world", but they failed on that promise. Rockstar has completely nailed that aspect of delivering a true open world. You are able to interact with every single NPC in the game, with the option of "greet" or "antagonize". Every npc responds differently both initially, and after you interact with them. Rockstar has added such elements as, if you kill an npc their family members could come hunt you down, and if you kill someone an npc can respond to the blood on your clothes. You can go to the barber, go fishing, rob a man, save a man's life, go have a time at the saloon, and so much more. The game does have some gameplay issues though. Player movement can feel a little clunky at times, meaning you don't feel as comfortable moving around. The cover system can mess up at times, and really screw you over in a gunfight. The core system felt a little tedious at times, but never really never bothered me because provisions (which are needed to refill your 3 cores: health, stamina and dead eye) are really accessible. While riding your horse, to fall off and get yanked by trees, rocks, and other things in the environment. Many parts of the game would feel boring since you are just riding your horse around, but I really liked it when you were riding with fellow gang members because of the conversations you would have. Onto the positives about gameplay. Dead Eye returns from RDR, which is the ability to slow down time and mark enemies to fire all at once, and it is bad***. Gunfights are fun and some of the Arthur's sarcasm during the gunfights are hilarious. While riding your horse, you have the ability to press either square or x to jump on to someone else's horse. The way you can explore the environment, whom you come across, what you come across (such as a KKK meeting) is amazing. Rockstar has implemented thousands of secrets into the game, many will probably never be found until after RDR3 comes out. The elements of storytelling Rockstar implemented in the dialogue is astonishing, especially their use of foreshadowing and irony. Since this is a prequel to Red Dead Redemption, they set the bar for how a prequel should be done. Unlike the X Men movies or the Star Wars prequels, every single thing in Red Dead Redemption makes sense now. Rockstar connected these two perfectly. The way you play as Arthur Morgan, the you do everything with him, the way you decide who he is, the way you follow him through his journey, Roger Clark's performance as Arthur, easily makes him one of the greatest protagonists in all of gaming. Clark's acting in some of these cutscenes is amazing, and without going into spoilers, you won't forget this game. this review can't do justice to how amazing this game is, all I can say is, get the game (after watching or playing the first one), take your time, and you won't regret it. Despite some flaws in the gameplay, Red Dead Redemption 2 was an amazing ride from start to finish and one that I wish I could play for the first time again. Expand

There is nothing for me to hate about this game, it is dangerously immersive. The graphics are the best I have ever seen on the Xbox One X and they hold up to be way above average on the standard Xbox One. This game is like playing something from the future. It is based on hyper-realism, meaning that it will take you a while to ride to your destination if it is miles away, that's the point. The tiny details in the game all mount up to making the world around you feel alive. I'll list a few: Horses and NPCs don't respawn, there are no repeated character models. If one dies, it never comes back into the game. NPCs all have separate daily lives and friendship groups. (Youtube: Following NPCs around RDR2). Your horses balls shrink when its cold (yes there is a weather system with temperature that is location and time dependant). Bodies of animals and humans decompose over days. You need to eat, drink and wash. Your facial and head hair actually grows over time and you can keep it trimmed if you want to. If your hat gets shot off, there will be a bullet hole where it hit it for the rest of the game unless you buy a new one. You need to clean and maintain your guns to keep them shooting accurately. You have to feed and bond with your horse for it to fully trust and listen to you like in real life. New horses have to be broken in to be ridable like in real life. You carry guns realistically, not hiding them up inside your ass like in GTA. There is so much in this, it would be difficult to list them all. What i love even more, I have completed the game after about 120 hours and there is STILL loads of content that I didn't know about.

Conversations feel real, the story and voice acting is fantastic, the characters leave you feeling like they are actually in your life. There are moments where you forget you are playing a game. Honestly, If this was based around first-person then this would be dangerously immersive and I love that.

If you take gaming a bit too seriously like I do and want to get immersed inside a new world, then this is the best money you will ever spend.

I play games to get away from boring reality. This game has boring, time consuming chores, boring slow fishing, boring slow card games, real time theatre shows, slow laborious hunting, slow ass horse riding to get anywhere, slow animated cooking, slow animated cleaning, slow walking in camps. If I wanted to do any of that boring sh1t I would be actually doing it in real life, not playing video games.

I'm only half way through and I have gone from enjoyment at the beginning, to boredom, to actively being frustrated continually while playing the game.
Two guys picked a fight with me in a city, they opened fire with no provocation, I shot them, witnesses run screaming and 10 cops spawn in front of you down every street as you try and get away. finally escape with a $383 bounty now on your head, which takes approx 1000hrs to earn back looting people for .40cents at a time. finally pay off bounty, accidentally knock over random npc in the street and it all begins again.

Yeah the graphics are pretty, but the gameplay is the least fun and satisfaction i have had from a game in a long time.
I'm giving up on it for now. maybe they will patch it and make it a bit more enjoyable.
    Things it needs:
    Fast travel from anywhere.
No bounty, or way more loot so it is not so painful.
Better power curve- there is no progression after about 20%, you have everything decent.
Skippable cutscenes and animations. Faster animations.
More realistic police presence, the law is way too quick to the scene, coordinated, numerous and powerful.
No button press and hold delays, tap in rhythm to gallop everywhere etc, just more user friendly controls.
better inventory, everything is just so clunky and slow.
They seem to have made all the worst, most boring everyday stuff more realistic and slow, but made the law telepathic and able to appear in force anywhere on the map in moments. It takes you longer to wait for your horse to get to you and mount up, than a full posse of lawmen to track you down, even though you are ten a ten minute ride from any town, and start shooting, and when you shoot back, it costs you a fortune, and the cops are suddenly everywhere.
It's a frustrating game. You are apparently supposed to play like a good citizen, but the main story has you shooting up town after town, i just dont get the angle they are trying for. Confusing, aimless and frustrating.

Overall I want to say the gameplay is very clunky and litteraly unplayable. Is this game fun to play? yes if u like watching a movie and want to live inside a game and eat apples/feed ur horse and threathe it like an survival game.. Since this release of RDR2 I have no faith in rockstar games anymore, they will focus again on online, battle royale, and to make profit from it. My question is here: Do game companys care about gamers? No, only a few companys do but not the large ones anymore. They just want to see how much money u have in ur wallet, anyways the game red dead redemption 2 I was very hyped for is just a clunky, buggy open world game, without real living things and it is very very unoptimized, it feels like the game is released in beta/alpha state. The main character arthur morgan is okay, but very boring to play aswell, the huge problem with red dead 2 is that u cant play it as an ''GAME'', it is like an movie, because everytime when u want to start a mission u enter very long cutscenes, the only few things u do is shooting/ horse riding actually. Those meta scores of this game are way too overrated, im like serious 9,7 from 33 critics? did those reviewers got paid by rockstar? Gamers should rise up and stop those dumb ''casual'' game releases, what I want to say at last is : focus on this when u make an great game: Story > gameplay > open world > character design > mission design > and at the last GRAPHICS, GAMES are not about GRAPHICS, and YES im glad that God of War won the game of the year award, I would be ambarassed if god of war did not win the GOTY, because God of War is an REAL game, Not an MOVIE. In about 40 hours in to the game I woke up to a realization, that everything I've done so far wasn't very interesting. Rockstar tried to go with more realism with this one and implemented some survival elements but the problem is that if you don't sleep or eat or clean yourself it doesn't really matter. You can't die of hunger. I didn't eat anything during 67 hours of gameplay just to see if something happens. So the "survival" elements are there just to annoy you. If you shoot an opponent in the chest three times the bastard still keeps running around. In my books, that's not realism.

Gameplay is where rdr 2 doesn't shine. Arthur, your main character controls like a sack of snot. You move very slowly. You can't sprint in the main camp that works as a hub area that you can use to upgrade and restock your ammo and supplies, It's not tiny, the camp is actually quite a big area. This was a thing that almost made me quit. It's really that annoying so I tried to stay out of the camp as much as possible but you have to visit often to pick up missions. Shooting is allover the place. I can't hit anything. Had to turn on auto lock for aiming. Fast travel is very limited. You are forced to ride your horse almost everywhere. Horse controls aren't bad actually. It's fun to a certain point. After a while it just becomes a chore. Taking care of your horse is a big thing. You have to feed it and clean it so it stays healthy. Bounty system is a complete joke. Somebody attacks you out of nowhere and you can't defend yourself at all or you get a bounty. If you bump to somebody in a street, you get a bounty. If you kill somebody out in the wilderness there's always somebody to witness the crime. Doesn't matter if you shoot that one, another will pop out of nowhere so you have to kill that one too and it becomes an infinite loop. No matter what, you're going to get a bounty even in middle of nowhere.

    Very minor spoiler ahead!!!

Story and characters aren't very interesting. Basic western story that has been told many times before. I must admit tho. Certain saloon scene where Arthur is drunk as a skunk and constantly looses his friend Lenny, is the funniest thing I've seen in games for years. I was laughing so hard I almost shat my pants.

Graphics these days are a matter of taste. Everybody seems to like different things. This one looks very realistic. I can almost smell the horse sh't It's that good. The attention to details is uncanny. One thing that I don't like about this generation games is the color palette. Every game looks the same and colors are very dim or light or what ever. There seems to be very little of contrast and blacks are not blacks. Dark areas seem bright but they aren't?? Weird but I don't know how to quite describe it. Maybe it's a thing with hdr, I sure as hell don't know.

This game was in development for 8 years. It really shows in the detail and graphics department but what's usually missing in games today is also missing here which is good controls. Some game play aspects like aiming and the bounty system do need a lot of tweaking. I have no idea why people are calling this game groundbreaking and saying that it has changed gaming forever. Everything that's in this game has already been done better elsewhere. Don't get too hang up on my score. I actually don't know if I should give it 3 or 9. It's a weird mix of awesome in few things and a lot of.. meh.. in everywhere else. So if you like slow paced game play in a bad third person shooter where you have survival elements that don't matter and you hate fast travel and like western theme and wanna watch horses balls shrink in snow storm, then this game is right up your alley.

    Well fleshed out characters
An incredibly well-detailed world, very strong in this area
The animals in the game are superbly realised and make the world feel truly alive
Pretty good graphics for a console, doesn't seem too sluggish on XB1X in 4K HDR mode, but it's not as amazing as people are saying

    Cons:
Game is not really open world, story is on rails as are the side-quests. If you go off piste you fail quests, you cannot apply any creative thinking to the problems. So rather a dull experience.
Appalling control system; unintuitive, unresponsive, inconsistent use of controls, makes the game not worth playing for me. It's like playing something from 20 years ago on a PS2
Silly and laborious systems for inventory, weapons selection and item use, you end up fiddling about so much with the menus that your objective has run off by the time you're ready to do what you need to.
Endless cut scenes that take you out of the game and ruin the flow of play, you just think you are watching a bad 1970's cowboy film in Sunday afternoon
Constant talking from all around you that prevents you just getting on with things. I really could not care less if some dumb broad thinks I ought to take a bath or not. It's just tedious small-talk that does not move the game on. Seriously, whoever wrote the script for this really needs to understand those two key story-telling maxims, 'less is more' and 'show not tell'
Weak combat system that makes you avoid combat rather than actively embrace it
The game is a horse-riding simulator. It's so dull; ride, ride, ride, then spend 2 minutes doing some boring activity, then ride, ride, ride back, as there's no decent fast travel system. So you just ride over the same boring dirt tracks over and over and over and over. Yeah we get it, you're a cowboy, you ride a horse. Wow. Big deal.
Overly anal attention to detail about the most petty activities; picking weapons from a saddle bag, watching you skin the same animals hundreds of times over and over and over. You even have to make coffee to drink, seriously, this is the type of tedious activity I do at home before leaving for work, I don't want to spend my gaming time reliving the less exciting moments of my normal life. Playing this game is often like having a second job, but one that's actually less fun than my actual career.

Main issue is the control system, it's so bad, I can't believe they released the game like this. I use an XB1 controller a lot on the PC as it's the best controller going IMO, so I am used to gamepads, but I have not seen a gamepad control system implemented this badly in decades.

So a bit of a mixed bag, but if I'd paid for the game, I'd not be pleased. Can't see me moving to consoles for my gaming if this is the best that's on offer.

Games are meant to be given ratings based on how well they play and fortunately for RDR2/Rockstar, many players and reviewers have forgotten this. It's currently sitting with some of the best scores possible, while being fundamentally broken in many aspects...and that is almost hilarious.

The game is arguably gorgeous and there is plenty to do; large areas to explore, lots of people to interact with, a vast array of animals to hunt and resources to collect etc. Unfortunately the main controls and general gameplay are as archaic and badly executed as you could make them. General movement/horse controls and basic inventory/weapon selection makes you wonder if they have learned anything since RDR1, or just any other game in the industry.

Missions leave you stuck in the middle of nowhere without your horse or your equipment, which is probably a lesson in how important these elements are...but can be bypassed by a simple save and load to retrieve your horse. Getting on and off your horse seemingly resets Aurthur to whatever weapon it feels like. Walking around camps is a slow tedious chore. Poker games still last forever due to AI players being overly cautious, with very little payout for time wasted. Skinned animals drop into existence when an area is left and returned to. Dying just results in you being plonked somewhere nearby with a minor cash payment removed. it's all very shallow and either pointless, overlooked or poorly executed.

That's just a few examples, but it's a small sample of how a product can actually be a beautiful looking polished turd. It just gets some points for being that polished visually and for cinematic effect...the problem is the polish isn't where the game needs it. It's certainly no GOTY if you actually like good gameplay.

It's a too long and boring game with really bad mechanics and not too well created characters. The excellent things - graphics and details. This is my very first Rockstar game I've been playing in and the last one at the same time. I'm not convinced that they are good.

I had a ton of hope for this game but was overall disappointed. At 2-3 hours in I noticed that the game wasn't fun, and was borderline a chore to play. I was able to make my experience better by solely focusing on the main story, but even then the game's faults were at times glaringly obvious. It took me about 60 hours to complete the main story.

    Pros:
    Beautiful world
    Great main story
    Good Immersion

    Cons:
You spend a ridiculous amount of time riding your horse from point A to point B.
The horse has no intelligence and will run headfirst into a tree or jump off a cliff to its death.
Game-play mechanics are clunky, especially in gunfights.
Animations for looting, skinning an animal etc take too long.
More often than not there is not enough time to loot enemies without failing your mission.
Weapon load-outs get reset every time you ride your horse.
Your active weapon gets reset every time you interact with an object.
Overly scripted and offers very little choice.
Situational restrictions on character actions break immersion.

Red Dead Redemption 2 serves as just what you would expect a sequel of the first game to be, but slightly worse.

I've had most of the rest of their games, and now fatefully RDR v1.2. The pent-up demand is what sold this game, NOT THE CONTROLS. The controls are horrendous. Simply horrendous. It's as if they did zero tuning/updating to the main core mechanics of movement/item pickup/weapon aiming or prior R* games and simply bolted on additional convoluted controls. Want to pick something up? Look around in a circle and walk back and forth and then maybe. Not always, for sure, but sometimes it is simply maddening. Even the controller scheme reference in the settings menu is irritating as it flashes between schemes/scenarios way too fast to make a mental snapshot.

Want to play poker, dominoes, or any other mini game? Be prepared to sit through repetitive time-consuming animations that suck the joy out of the process. I question if I expect too much detail in the scripted actions shown, and the answer is decidedly mixed. Some actions are highly detailed, others not so much - when it seems they could have been easily. The graphics of the physical world are great and plentiful, and with a variety unmatched by other open worlds. But - we play games for the fun and interaction. The controls spoil everything.

Want to start the next mission? Of course is in two towns over and requires riding there. Realism? Definitely. Belong in a game? No - it's just sooo boring and repetitive. Of course you can use Cinematic Mode, but you WILL be attacked along the way, and if your destination is a town, you can bet your horse will run into someone and get you a bounty needlessly, which in turn will lock down anything you wanted to do in that town until you pay off said bounty. That is if Cinematic Mode actually takes you to where you set your waypoint and not somewhere entirely different...

When following a NPC and avoiding detection/danger (which you will do A LOT), it is not always clear what the next action or location is to be as everything is scripted up to exactly where you have to walk to trigger the next process, which leads to replaying (at least there is finally a way to replay shorter sections/checkpoints of a mission or the ability to skip completely after three failures - a nice touch!). However, the score criteria on missions is unknown until you have completed the mission, giving you little chance to get a gold rating without playing through in its entirety at least twice.

And then there is saving your progress. Why is it saving is not allowed most of the time in this game? Some of these missions are so scripted (and boring!) that the inability to save is almost criminal. The Epilogue starts off being comprised of doing the most mundane and boring tasks that take forever and ever - and you can't quit because you can't save! It will finally autos save, but there is a caveat with that if you choose to load a prior point in the game and it prompts you to Autosave: if you allow the save it overwrites what you want to keep, and if you turn off the Autosave feature it will delete your last autosave anyway! Maddening!

Camera auto-leveling: Why, oh why, can't I dictate where my camera is pointing and when? Automatically resetting my view is a constant battle, and most FPS games moved past several years ago!

I realize this is a rambling review... There is just so many things wrong with this game that ruins what could have been a masterpiece - that I keep going back and adding sections to this diatribe. RDR2 Online is available to play (in beta) starting today. Don't care. There are other games to play that are actually fun.

One last parting thought: Ever wonder why some games are rated as excellent by the critics, but the user reviews are much more lackluster? Reeks of fanboy/financial incentives...?

Oh, how I wanted to love this game. I actually signed up to do reviews in Metacritic because of how blah I feel about the game. After 81 hours of playing, this is a game that feels like a chore more than anything else.

    - too much horse. I got the white Arabian and it is fast. The problem with the horse is that aside from walking it is the only way to get to around (sure there is a train and stagecoach for city to city travel) but come on, do I really need to ride a horse for 5 IRL minutes so that I can go the next objective? Sure I get to see the "beautiful game", sure I can always stop and hunt or forage, sure there is always a chance at an ambush, race, or animal attack, but even with all of that. the travel feels daunting. I bet 20% of my game time has been riding a horse and doing nothing else.

    - slow and repetitive animations (walking in camp, picking up stuff or when stuff happens during missions). The game has no option to turn these off, so every time I pick up a plant I have to wait 1-2 seconds while the animation plays, same with every other action I do - and it adds up. If I forrage 1000 plants that is 16 minutes of IRL time watching the same animation at 1 second per animation, skin 100 animals that is 5 IRL minutes of watching the same animation (sure the animal in the scen and how the skinning is done varies but after the 20th time it all blurs into - I don't give a damn. Aside from the animations, the slow pace, in general, doesn't really trigger anything outside of frustration and boredom.

    - I feel like the game forces you to play the good guy - it rewards you by doing so (discounts in shops, no bounty hunters to harass you - which is a good thing as most of them are magical bounty hunters with teleporting abilities) and punishes you if you don't. The cost of being a criminal far exceeds the rewards.

These are a few of the constant annoyances. However, the main problem is, that it's not a real open world game. If you focus on the main story you will experience a linear and scripted game with almost no freedom. Every time you try something different the missions will fail - and if you have to repeat the mission many are scripted and you can't skip the slow-ass ride from point a to point b because the NPC has some important story to tell you about how their balls hurt when they were riding wagons in the winter (I don't care). If you don't do the missions or follow the story, well then you get what I got - 80 hours of slowly realizing how laborious the game is and how unfulfilling it is to continue playing.

In summary, RDR2 is an average game in an open world sandbox if you ignore the story and do whatever you want. However, doing whatever you want too early in the game limits you because you can't get some gear or rewards until you follow the storyline so then you end up with getting forced to follow the story just to get improvements you want. If you love the main story, the game provides maybe 15-20 hours of a very scripted and cinematic game with high production value. Both parts have average gameplay and problematic controls. The only highlights and reasons to play the game are its great graphics, atmosphere and story. Which for me was not enough to want to finish the game or keep playing, TBH even with my goal of not buying new games until I complete the ones I have, I will likely call RDR2 completed and not go back.

I very often had the feeling that I am playing a re-skin of GTA V - this game is nearly 6 years old! There were games around 2000 that had better game play. The beautiful looking world does not respond or interact to players actions. Most of the time the player feels like the environment just there to look good. Weather does not have any effect on the players actions. Everyone who played games like Zelda BOTW knows what it means, if it is raining and you are trying to make fire. What about moving slower in snow? In RDR2 the weather does not have ANY effect on the environment.

Also the realism is a big problem in this game. Every review addresses the realism as the best part of this game and I think it is not. There are many situations were the realism is very close to reality, but the problem with too much realism is that you get very sensitive for things that do not act like in reality. There are several examples for this: riding on your horse for some time will make Arthur stow his guns in the saddle. Now if you jump of the horse you will instantly have your guns on the back again, but if you get into a gun fight while you are riding and you jump of the horse, you have to pick up all your weapons by your self!!! Another thing for example is that if you go to the receiver at emerald ranch to sell you plundered stuff in the night, he will stand in its shop but the interaction menu tells you you have to wait until tomorrow to be able to sell things... why is he even in his shop when he does not buy things from you????

I don't want to get too much into detail here since everything is already mentioned in the other reviews. In my opinion this game is no that innovative as it is presented by Rockstar and the bigger review websites. Most of the game is very retrogressive. For each mechanic in this game there are other games that do those mechanics way better! It is too slow, too time consuming and in no means rewarding for the spend time.

Then there's the world. it is beautiful, sure, but it was inspired by some of the world's most breathtaking locations, namely the American west. And to be honest, RDR2's locations never give you that awe. And before you say it's a game it's not the same, well many games have accomplished it, so this is not an excuse.

Luckily, the writing is simply excellent. But even then, the quests never feel like a big deal, but that's not such a problem. I wish I had a bit more guidance in what i am supposed to do next but then, the writing more than makes up for that particular problem.

As much as i hate saying this, I must admit RDR2 is way too overrated. it's clearly an excellent game but a new Witcher 3 this isn't.

Go ahead and look up the top five rated games of 2018, and then contemplate the future death of console gaming. So if you're a critic, I mean you have to give at least one game each year a 9 or 10, right? I guess? After all, the game does LOOK great, doesn't it?

Rockstar seems to have banked on two themes to make this game a success. 1) Make the game look exceptional (and after all, the game does LOOK great). 2) Up the violence and mayhem to the point where you the player murder/rob/beat/terrorize so many innocent people it makes you feel like a card carrying member of the Waffen SS (for Rockstar, FYI, that's not a good thing).

That's about it. They ignored everything else and it shows.

I knew something was deeply wrong with this game after I got done with the five hour intro/tutorial and I realized I didn't care about anything. The game does LOOK great after all. The combat is a lot of fun and at times even electric. But in general, I don't, like, FEEL anything while playing this game. The characters all are bland, cookie cutter, uninteresting blobs. The story reads like a five year old's choose your own adventure drawing of the Old West.

You don't get to make actual decisions that impact the plot / scope of the game. You're a complete spectator in somebody else's game script. The bounty system is asinine. You can kill 20 lawmen, go pay your own bounty that same day in the same city, and then walk around and converse with cops that same day and even though they acknowledge they hate you, nothing happens. Okay, it's a video game, but is this the level of acceptable reality Rockstar was aiming for in an open world game that's supposed to be so realistic you have to remember to brush your horse?

Between the lack of player agency, the bounty system, and the constant button mashing, it's like Rockstar made a game that looks like it's 2018, but with all the game mechanics and weak story for something made in 2004. It's baffling that they still think this level of overall quality is acceptable for a AAA game. And they'll still probably made a criminal amount of money anyways. So what do I know.

After a while I only kept playing this game because I paid full price and wanted to feel like I'd gotten my money's worth. If I'd paid like $20 for this game I'd likely have put it down after about 15 hours and never played it again. At times the game is barely playable. Definitely would not recommend it to anybody.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hope Rockstar really reads these users reviews and doesn't go by all of the biased early-review stories written by people who benefit from clicks. Possible spoilers here!!

I was the biggest fan of RDR, had no real knowledge of that game before it came out, and don't even like to watch westerns. But the graphics, gameplay, characters and story all blew me away. Became my favorite game of all time, and I was early waiting years for a possible sequel.

I pre-ordered the game like so many others, and like happens so often with other games, this was probably a mistake - not because the game is a total loss, but because it gives gaming publishers a pass for putting out a game that has serious gameplay issues.

Anyway, my feelings echo many of the exact things others have posted; the visuals of the environment, weather, etc. - the immersiveness in the world of RDR2 is incredible. And *some* of the missions and characters are very engaging. The Lenny mission is possibly one of the best missions in a game, ever. Unfortunately, most of the other missions are much worse. They are too close to typical 'fedex' missions, and are very annoying at times due to the wasted time riding out to the mission, or riding back, or the mission requiring loading your horse which already has a valuable skin, etc. Just not thought out well. I also agree that the missions are 100% strictly scripted and it gets annoying real fast. Mission starts; I can't save, I don't know how long it will take, often I waste my buffs and hard earned ammo to kill people and then can't even loot the bodies.

And possibly worst of all are the far-too-many Dutch "trust me I have a plan" (literally), doing stupid thing, "Arther you don't have faith", rinse and repeat.

I still haven't finished, and though I'd love to do all of the missions and experience everything that was put into the game, all of the wasted time has just made it seem drawn out and now I'm just trying to get to the damn ending.

Not a great effort overall in many ways and worse than it's predecessors.

Get a little to far away from your gangmates as you slowly and painfully trot towards the mission area becuase you want to check out something neat off the path? Failed mission.

The game still features Rockstars horribly outdated gunplay and cover system.

Arthur and your horses feel like your controlling a shopping cart full of cinderblocks.

Even the new micromanaging systems (horse care, gun maintainance, etc) dont make the game any more fun, they end up just feeling like chores.

Rockstar has also never been exceptional with fluid believable animations before, and they aren't perfect here either, but they are way way way better than I expected, and totally on par with other AAA games. I never hit any bugs. The story and character progression are thought provoking and heart wrenching at times. The music and sound design are second to none. While there are great big moments, like train heists, that's exactly what I'd expect of a modern video game. They are fun, but what really demonstrates the quality to me is the numerous subtler things: doing realistic chores in camp, surprisingly realistic conversation while playing poker, and careful consideration of what aspects of the game to turn into limited resources (e.g., cargo on your horse, time limit on fresh kills going rotten). Everything sums up to the most immersive game I've played to date. Expand

Everything is overly complicated, which would be fine if you weren’t limited by the controls, so you end up shooting someone instead of saying hello. Just bringing up your weapon requires planning, and the characters movement are very difficult to control. The story is insanely boring, missions are planned out from start to finish so you feel like you might as well watch a movie. I think the main problem is that Rockstar have stopped making fun games, they’ve substituted fun for realism. The games are now trying to be smart, but end up being just boring. This applies to the GTA series as well, which hasn’t been fun to play since GTA:SA. And let’s face it, RDR was always just GTA in the wild west. In GTA III, the main character couldn’t even speak! Compare that with this game, which is all a bunch of useless dialogue. You feel like you’re watching a crappy movie, with plain characters. Expand

    Third, disgusting optimization.
And what kind of discrimination, why the Ultimate Publishers get the beta test before those who bought the regular edition.
GTA 5 I have forgiven, but this was the last drop. This is the last game I bought from Rockstar.

The NPCs are unlovable, peppered with the usual Rockstar profanity & disdain for any kind of civil behaviour. Every plot point is off kilter, every story is at odds with the "player 1 is a hero" ideal. If you try to do the evil play through you will find it equally jarring as there are forced points of "being the hero" moments.

I'm giving it a 2 instead of a 0 simply because the graphics are very pretty at times however there are plenty of glitch moments that highlight how little work went into polishing this horse turd. If you've managed to avoid it so far, keep going. I was unable to complete the last chapter as it was so annoying to play.

If I ran Rockstar I would, genuinely not just trying to start an argument or annoy people, review the work put in by all the people who made this & ask them some serious questions about their future at the company. I feel like this game was designed to destroy Rockstar's reputation & annoy their audience. Honestly I'm very disappointed & saddened by how this game turned out. I would also analyse the so called "professional critics" reviews & ask many of them if they actually played the game as giving this game more than 70% raises a lot of questions about how they rate games.

Since TW3's release, I'd yearned for a game that would captivate me as that game did. After experiencing the entire game - and also upgrading from a first gen XBOX One to an XBOX One X, which was a substantial improvement - I awarded RDR2 with the coveted 10/10. The flaws detailed below are still valid, but they're insignificant compared to the game's strengths.

It's a very good game, but it's not perfect, and is therefore not worthy of the coveted 10/10. I'll mostly focus on the parts of the game that either need improvement, or should have been excised from the final product altogether. This is because everyone already knows about the game's high points.

THE HONOR SYSTEM: This is a total mess. It's the same thing as the karma system in the Fallout series. If you do something honorable, you get "good cowboy" points, and the opposite is true if you do somethign dishonorable. The game very much wants you to be a "good cowboy." There are a number of perks awarded to you if your "honor" is high, which mostly consist of discounts in stores, and additional clothing available for purchase at said stores. Given that money is not all that easy to come by in the game (at least for the first half), this is no small perk. The problem with the honor system, however, is that it's extremely finicky, and after not too long it conditions you to avoid confrontation with NPCs (both man and beat) altogether. For example, you see some men arguing at the side of the road, and it looks like it might erupt into gunfire. You intervene by shooting the primary aggresors just as they brandish their firearms. In so doing, you shoot one of their horses, which the game considers dishonorable. You have now lost an entire level of honor. Whereas you once received a 25% discount in stores, you now enjoy merely a 10% discount. What's more, to regain honor is no small feat - it's very, very easy to become dishonorable, but quite tedious and time consuming to attain a high honor level. So when the game forces you to do some mission that requires you to kill dozens of innocent NPCs during the course of an armed robbery, it's a bit of a punch to the gut when the inevitable honor fallout ensues.

AGGRESIVE NPCs: This is somewhat related to my gripe with the "honor system." You go into a bar and some guy picks a fight with you because he's drunk, etc. You'd think that this would be a fun diversion, or maybe even increase your "melee" skillset, or something similiar. Not at all. If he throws the first punch and you beat him to death (or unconscious - it's not clear to me if these guys die or not following a beating), then while you may not have the law on your back, you absolutely will lose honor points. Why? You acted in self-defense, so what's the issue? Who knows. And if you plunder the corpse of valuables afterwards, forget about it...not only will you lose even more honor, but you'll be wanted for "looting." Bonus points if you inadvertenly punch one of the men people in the bar during your justified assault - you'll now be wanted for "unarmed assault," notwithstanding you lack of criminal intent. So you see how this game really only wants you to commit sanctioned acts of violence, i.e., those that are bundled with a mission? Seriously, Arthur Morgan is considerably more placid and peaceful than I am even in my day-to-day life. It's outright bizarre.

LOOTING CORPSES: In addition to what I referenced in the "AGGRESIVE NPCs" paragraph, this also needs some work. Most of the missions involve shooting hoards of NPCs to death. We're talking at least three dozen. Every single one of these corpses can be looted, which yields not insignificant amounts of money, ammo, and other valuables that can be fenced. The problem is, however, your fellow gang members discourage you from looting - they constantly complain and tell you to hurry-up and move over to the next cut-scene trigger mark. You can ignore them, but man...they complain A LOT. It's just annoying, and it makes you feel like there will be some consequence if you don't heed their commands. I don't think there are any consequences - that's just how it makes you feel.

There are a few things that are more minor, such as the fact that animals usually have poor quality pelts, even if you kill them properly. You can eyeball the animal from afar to see if they have a three-star quality - or "perfect" - pelt, but why didn't they just give all animals perfect pelts and leave it up to the player to degrade their quality by utilizing the wrong weapon during the hunt? Who knows. Anyway, it's a great game, but it has some really wonky systems, and it's not clear to me why the developers included these systems in teh final product

Pros: First off people who haven't played the game don't make a review...

Game is phenomenal hands down best game of 2018...

This game is better than god of war

    Controls are easy to remember

    Extremely realistic (especially in 4kUHD)

Cons: When i'm in St.Denis with a horse people walk right in front of me and report me for "assault"

But who cares always nice for a shootout

I must say, to put this game above let's say Witcher 3 or last Dragon Age is beyond me.

Sure the game looks great, but the story is boring and linear as hell, the controls clunky, it is one of the least open "open world games" I played.

Very dissapointed, the game still deserves 5/10 but I have it 0 because it definitely doesn't deserve 9.7

R* has sold over a billion dollars worth of copies and made something truly special here. They made a game that they wanted to play and made design choices that not every gamer will agree with and even the most seasoned will question. Its just refreshing to see a large AAA company not pander to the lowest denominator (because marketing told them to) but instead made a game they want to play with the quality most expect from a R* title.

There is a lot of detail in this game. The NPC schedules for example are fascinating. You can literally follow an NPC around for an entire day cycle and they actually have a life instead of just roaming aimlessly tricking you into thinking they are busy doing stuff only to find out they only go from A to B and then B to A.

At first I felt some frustrations of many as well but it was sort of a fault to my own. The first chapter was amazing but extremely slow with very poor checkpoint placement. Also, getting used to the controls and tweaking them in settings takes time (i play the game with free aim only so its tough). I was excited after the tutorial chapter and got into this habit of rushing early on and it ruined the game for me until I took a step back and allowed myself to get lost in the details.

The amazing view distances and visuals are captivating and you start to get really enveloped. The story is subjectively interesting and the characters are deep. The voice acting and mocap are some of the best in the game industry if not the best.

The clunkiness has always existed in R* titles but since they went for more realism like they did in GTA IV, it definitely has its moments of frustration but you really start to feel that being careless has its consequences like it does in real life. I love it.

If you're more of a casual gamer. Read Dead Online is a free second portion of the game that might be better suited for you. I sure will be playing it with friends and family and can't wait.

    Cheers!

This game made me feel like the main character would in those regards. Care for the other members of the gang, increasing frustration with Dutch, sense of futility that the next big score would have us mango farming in Tahiti. Just excellent tone and pacing.

What it lacks in character progression (it is not a skill building or leveling power fantasy) it makes up for in character development. I believe some of the negative thoughts about this game miss the point that this is not a crescendo toward the climax but a story that kind of swirls around the central themes and the gang gets increasingly desperate and more fractured.

The way the game resolves and moves into the Epilogue is extremely well done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a game, it’s a masterpiece. I made a Metacritic account just to give it a 10 out of 10.

The world I saw giant, featuring a vast array of different landscapes and sceneries. There are big cities, desert town, farmlands, snowy mountains, jungles and many more for you to explore. The map of RDR2 also features the New Austin area of the first RDR, so you will be pleased to see your old, favorite places from the first game. The story is set all around the big map, so you will be able to explore the whole of it as you’re playing the story.

And the gameplay is also extremely fun. The guns feel better than ever. As you’re playing through the story, you unlock new guns, which you can then buy and customize however you want. But also, the more you shoot your guns, the better you get at shooting them, so you have many option of what you want to do, use new better guns or stick to older ones. And the shooting never gets repetitive, it’s actually otherwise. The more you shoot, the more you want to shoot, so you play each mission with a lot of excitement to shoot more bad guys.

And there are loads of story missions, side missions and other activities to do. As you travel around the world on your horse, you bump into many random encounters, which can be either hostile or friendly and there are so many of them, that I don’t think I’ve done the same random encounter more than twice, which means that the random encounters also don’t get repetitive. And many side missions have plots and plot twists, so many times you’re just expecting to help someone, but end up hating or even killing them.

And now I’ll get into spoilers about the story, so if you want to play the story, don’t read the next 2 paragraphs. Arthur Morgan is probably the best written character of any Rockstar game. When the story first starts, you’re playing as a hillbilly guy, who is very angry and insults everyone for no apparent reason. You don’t like him at first and want to play as John Marston, but as the story goes on, you can see Arthur change and become a good man. You get very close to him, as if he is your best friend and then boom (big spoiler) he gets diagnosed with tuberculosis. This was a big and tragic shock for all RDR2 players, as you can see millions of searches on google about tuberculosis and if you can cure it. Every RDR2 Player was devastated.

As the story continues Arthur gets better and worse in front of your eyes. You can see how now he is a very good man, but his health state is awful and you know that he will die, but you just hope that he won’t. And in the end, when you think that finally the bad times are over, Dutch betrays you, Micah is a rat and half of the Gang is gone. As you go to your camp, you feel such loneliness and sadness, thinking about all your dead friends and seeing how your gang went from being so big to so small. And then Arthur dies. I was unable to play the story for 3 weeks after that happened. It was as if my brother died, I couldn’t cope with it. And then playing as John was not as satisfying and I didn’t really want to play anymore, I just wanted Arthur back. This game drove me through so many emotions and made me cry so many tears of both joy and sadness, that I will remember this story for the rest of my life. It is the best story you will ever play.

Overall this game is a game of the century, with many things to do and see and an award winning story, this game is a must have for anyone who likes videogames.

The story is extremely frustrating and repetitive. Someone is in trouble, ride for 15 minutes, shoot people for 2 minutes, ride back for 15 minutes. Animations are slow so looting is a pain, the story is badly written. I´m up to a point where I do not want to play anymore but I will just so I can finish the story (which I am sure will disappoint as well). Expand

This game is a damn masterpiece. Sure, there are a few flaws, like the slow and clunky animations, but the story, gameplay, and horse mechanics are some of the best I’ve had ever experienced in a game ever. This game is seriously worth every penny of the $60 price.

RDR2 is a gem. Although there are so many things to do on the side and a fully-developed multiplayer to dive into, I keep falling back to the main storyline because it's just so good. It is without a doubt the most fun I've had in a video game in years.

First thing the game is huge to huge in my opinion and I wished there would be in general a change from big and empty maps to smaller one's full of life.
Secondly its slow, sometimes painfully slow, I know the developer aimed for realism here, but do I need to see every movement from eating food, getting on the horse and so on and so on.
Also I felt a lack of mission variety, most of them felt repetitive sprinkled with some unique missions here and there and some great side missions.

Story wise, I loved Arthur and the change he was going trough the story, also the charm of the other characters where great, but the story itself and the pacing made me feel bored and on the end I went from mission to mission just to see how all ties together and that's it.
Normally in other games I also try to get all collectibles, but in here I couldn't care less.
The only one's what made me travel trough this huge world were bounties and hunting the legendary animals.

I would say a good game in general and I personally just don't feel/get it

While the game is fun in the open world, the story is sometimes really boring, repetitive and with lots of characters. I really liked playing the open world roleplaying. Also this game is too realistic, at points of stupidness, i get you want to show your engine, but i waste them into dumb **** like the horse. In general it is fun, but not enough to ride the horse for 60 hours

I created a profile here just to give my two cents about RDR 2. In one word - disappointing! From a visual/graphics standpoint, it's stunning and extremely well done but unfortunately, that is the only positive thing I can say. There was a lot of care and craftsmanship put into building the world. I wish I could say the same about the actual gameplay!

I got midway into chapter 2 and stopped playing because I found the gameplay and storyline very boring; it gets off to a slow start and continues at a snail's place. Now, slow doesn't necessarily mean bad if the story and/or characters are engaging, but I personally didn't find the story or characters captivating at all, which makes the game fall flat on its face. Characters are blah and the story is repetitive at best.

The controls are clunky and there's such an emphasis on replicating real life, that playing the game becomes a chore - seems like a common thing I've read in other reviews here and it is 100% true. You have to feed and groom your horse constantly or it will lose health. You have to wear the appropriate clothing for the weather or you lose health. And those are just a few examples. While true to life, those details add no substance to the game and honestly make it less fun. Hunting is cumbersome, and not worth it considering how tedious it is (ex: you can only use certain weapons to kill certain animals or you destroy the meat), and how little money you make. And the little money you come across early in the game, you're supposed to give to the camp.

The inventory/weapons management system is confusing. Actual combat and gunplay - which I was really looking forward to - were probably the biggest letdown of all. My biggest criticism regarding combat is that it's overly complicated, not straightforward. I found myself hesitant to commit crimes and actually have fun in the game because I was forewarned that the bounty system sucks, frankly. Once there's a bounty, it doesn't go away until paid off, which wouldn't be so bad except that money is hard to come by.

I was really pumped about this game and I found myself disappointed. Maybe at some point when I have nothing better to do (and no better games to play), I'll give it another shot and try to force myself through the story to see if it gets better. To be fair, I am only on chapter 2. But the fact that I'm saying that means that RDR 2 massively undelivered, at least in my opinion.

I had a friend who bought the game, only to return it a few weeks later because it was so disappointing. I am only keeping the game because I got it as a Christmas present and didn't spend my own money. There are definitely better games for the price. Wildly overhyped. Sadly, I don't recommend it.

Not sure where all these 9/10 and 10/10 reviews are coming from because it's very flawed, far from perfect. Either those reviewers are drunk, or they played a different game.

In short, price might be a few dollars more than the game is worth but the bottom end buy is kinda worth it. Now, a score of 3 reflects the fact this game is not complete. We've now entered the time big game studios will sell you a finished game (BF5, RDR2, etc) but it is not, where you buy on a promise of future release of portions of the game which translates, the consumer will be screwed more and more as time goes on.
Save your money, wait for it to go bargain basement because it will. Maybe $35.99 is a fair price. In fact, join the growing voices that are not purchasing AAA titles anymore until the game makers (like EA Chief Creative Officer Patrick Söderlund called customers ignorant...and yet you still buy their game. How beta are you people?) stop screwing over their customers.

I have loved every single rockstar game since GTA 3, and this game is no exception to the rule. You can tell that there was a whole lot of effort put into this title and it is understandable as to why it took so long to release. The vistas are gorgeous, the story and acting is excellent, and the amount of things you are able to do in the game are literally endless.

Unfortunately, there are some glaringly obvious flaws with the game, the two major flaws for me are: the incredibly awful pacing for the storyline, there were some really fun missions alongside some really boring tedious missions, and it was hard for me to keep my attention on it and keep playing it sometimes, the other major flaw is the absolutely abysmal character movement and cover system that leave a lot to be desired.

    + Excellent story
    + Great voice acting
    + Great soundtrack
    + Lots of side activities
    + Gorgeous world
    + Some really fun missions
+ Extensive list of animals, customization options, clothing, etc.

    - Awful pacing in story
    - Incredibly boring missions and side quests here and there
    - Abysmal and clunky character movement and cover systems
    - Post game epilogue and explorable areas are less than interesting
    - Controller mapping functions are in desperate need of a keyboard
    - Online is heavily geared towards microtransactions and has a ruined economy

Overall, it is a great game, and a good effort put forward by Rockstar, but it is not their best effort. Felt more like a really long movie and less like a fun video game at some points. Looking forward to GTA 6.

    EDIT as of 12/03/18:

Red Dead 2's multiplayer is schemed towards micro-transactions and gold bars, which act as the premium currency in the game. The economy is totally screwed, everything in the multiplayer has outrageous pricing scales, or is geared toward encouraging the player to relieve themselves of grinding duties and purchasing gold bars due to paywalls on certain items. Literally everything in the world is monetized and I cannot help but feel like this is incredibly greedy and a very scummy move by Rockstar or Take Two.

Due to this greed present in Red Dead 2 online, my score has dropped to a 7. The consumers do not deserve this, and I believe Rockstar should be better than this, but what do my words mean compared to the illustrious amounts of revenue rolling in from online MTX. I am severely disappointed in Rockstar, and I want to believe this is just Take Two pushing this, but as of right now, I have minimal desire to return to this game now.
