Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption for the Xbox One is a cinematic journey through the heart of the Wild West. The main story unfolds as a masterclass in emotional storytelling, introducing a cast of characters with rich, nuanced backgrounds that resonate deeply.

The game's side quests offer a window into the realities of diverse regions, guiding players towards different narrative outcomes. This dynamic storytelling approach adds layers of depth and unpredictability, keeping players engaged and invested in every twist and turn.

Even in 2023, Red Dead Redemption's visuals stand tall, a testament to Rockstar's unwavering commitment to lifelike realism. The world it crafts, from sweeping views to treacherous terrain, is a breathtaking homage to the Wild West's beauty and danger.

Customization in Red Dead Redemption also shines. The ability to tailor your character's appearance, right down to their hair and beard, as well as the extensive options for weaponry and steeds, adds a level of personalization and immersion that is aprecciated by we, gamers. Features like applying pomade are a delightful touch, making every detail feel purposeful.

The diverse range of activities available is staggering. From the tranquil art of fishing to the heart-pounding pursuit of legendary animals, each venture offers a unique experience, ensuring there's never a dull moment in the expansive world of Red Dead Redemption.

Where the game truly excels is in its commitment to realism. Every facet, from the intricacies of gunplay to the nuances of survival, is rendered with astonishing fidelity, creating an immersive experience that feels unparalleled.

However, not without its quirks, the horse companion can prove to be a source of frustration, displaying moments of baffling decision-making that can lead to moments of frustration. Additionally, while the narrative offers a degree of freedom, there are moments where the linear nature of certain missions can feel restrictive.

Stealth, too, can be a curious endeavor. Armed with a bow and knife, the level of audibility seems at odds with the weapons used, leading to moments of immersion-breaking incredulity.

Important to note that I am reviewing the single player mode, so this game is earning a perfect score of 10/10. Its captivating narrative, rich characters, and unparalleled attention to detail make it a standout title in the gaming landscape. While the online mode may have faltered, the single-player adventure remains a triumph for Rockstar and a true gem for players seeking an unforgettable Wild West saga.

R* has sold over a billion dollars worth of copies and made something truly special here. They made a game that they wanted to play and made design choices that not every gamer will agree with and even the most seasoned will question. Its just refreshing to see a large AAA company not pander to the lowest denominator (because marketing told them to) but instead made a game they want to play with the quality most expect from a R* title.

There is a lot of detail in this game. The NPC schedules for example are fascinating. You can literally follow an NPC around for an entire day cycle and they actually have a life instead of just roaming aimlessly tricking you into thinking they are busy doing stuff only to find out they only go from A to B and then B to A.

At first I felt some frustrations of many as well but it was sort of a fault to my own. The first chapter was amazing but extremely slow with very poor checkpoint placement. Also, getting used to the controls and tweaking them in settings takes time (i play the game with free aim only so its tough). I was excited after the tutorial chapter and got into this habit of rushing early on and it ruined the game for me until I took a step back and allowed myself to get lost in the details.

The amazing view distances and visuals are captivating and you start to get really enveloped. The story is subjectively interesting and the characters are deep. The voice acting and mocap are some of the best in the game industry if not the best.

The clunkiness has always existed in R* titles but since they went for more realism like they did in GTA IV, it definitely has its moments of frustration but you really start to feel that being careless has its consequences like it does in real life. I love it.

If you're more of a casual gamer. Read Dead Online is a free second portion of the game that might be better suited for you. I sure will be playing it with friends and family and can't wait.

    Cheers!

May be one of the best games ever. Why give it only a 9 then? Here I list the reasons. A non-haters view of why this game isn't perfect. In fact there are very many negatives, enough to give any other game a much lower score. But what this game does right is so amazing it almost completely negates the negatives, but not quite. Here is what I didn't like:

    1) Controls are very clunky. Clunky controls are to Rockstar games what bugs are to Bethesda games. Every game you hope they improve but they never do

    2) Inventory is very unwieldy. Don't get me wrong I love how they try to make it a bit more realistic by tying some of it to your horse (only for weapons though). But it never seems to remember my preferences of what guns to carry and there is no way to see a list of your inventory. You must cycle through one item at a time and the organization is very poor. Also, it lets you carry way too much for realism. I had an entire store full of items in my satchel most of the time.

    3) Combat difficulty was way too easy. Default auto-aim makes shooting trivial (and turning it off makes horseback shooting nearly impossible so that really isn't an option either). The near infinite supplies of instant-heal tonics/provisions while in battle makes it even more trivial

    4) Money was way too easy to accumulate. Made the "struggling to survive" vibe and dialogue pretty laughable when I had thousands of dollars on me by early mid-game (even after fully upgrading the camp)

    5) No real endgame after you beat the missions. Sure hunting and collecting exists but it would have really benefited from a ranch-building/upgrading mechanic (I think they are planning on adding this in online mode) to give purpose to keep going and earning more money. Despite the amazingness of the world I kind of need a purpose to play on other than creating chaos or goofing around. The money I had at the end was basically infinite so no need to earn more

    6) They don't really let you play an evil character. Sure you can kill innocent randoms but in terms of the missions and story characters you essentially are always this noble good guy. I guess because the SJW's would complain too much if it let you, for instance, not side with the Indians or suffragettes or ex-slaves. It would be refreshing to have the option to side with the army against the Indians for instance. In classic fantasy games you can side with evil factions but, again, the historical context I guess makes it too hard in this SJW world now. Rockstar used to have more balls but even they have cowed to the pressure these days and made being a true jerk impossible

Problems 2, 3, and 4 above could probably be solved with some kind of hardcore mode, where inventory is limited, money is way tighter, heals are limited, and there is an actual death penalty. But there is no hardcore mode. My guess is they are saving that for online (where they hope to make more money with microtransactions probably).

But anyway, these are a lot of problems. But I still highly recommend playing this the world is so realistic it kind of boggles the mind, and the story was very well done as well. The struggling bandit vibe was awesome but would have been better if they made money harder to obtain. And the graphics are the best I've ever seen (on XboxOne X)

On my personal experience I think this game was built with love and dedication. It's pretty good if you like slow paced games. I liked this game mainly because of the storytelling that works like a movie or a book. The narrative is the strongest pro in this game, but being honest, at some point I got bored between Chapter 1 and 2 but the story and character developments is so well done. Which is why I think it is not perfect.

The graphics are stunning even playing it in an original Xbox One. The frame rate doesn't look too bad because the worst case scenario would be the game playing at 24-28 fps in the cutscenes which makes it look more like a movie.

One of the main things that keeps this game from being perfect is Online which is not so compelling or attractive as GTA Online. It may seem boring at times and that is a huge letdown but I feel that Red Dead Online is more of a plus than a main feature of the game.

The story is exciting, humorous, and tragic. Crying at least a couple of times through this game is a real possibility.

The gameplay can seem a little slow and methodical at first, but eventually you get into the intentionally lazy pace and it gives you time to appreciate the gorgeous sights around you.

This is a beautiful game, especially on the Xbox One X. The graphical detail is astounding. If you’re playing on 4K HDR, there are HDR settings in the menu, but they’re not perfect. The lighting is muted in cinematic mode, so set it to gaming mode and you’ll have to push your white levels up pretty high to get a good balance.

While the game is impressive, it isn’t perfect. It comes pretty damn close though. A year after launch and I have not played it again since my first run through, and I haven’t played the online multiplayer since the day it launched. You’ll have to read another review to find out how that is going now. This is a single player game first. If you enjoyed Red Dead Redemption, I cant imagine you not liking this game.

Only graphical issue I noticed was shadow detail distance as ur moving about the world but its not obvious to the point of annoyance.

The audio is beautiful and very immersive. Music choice is good, gun sounds are nice and meaty, movement, etc, etc sounds are really good.

Story is pretty good, it reminds me of old 70s and older Western films where it concentrated on slow build up of characters, setting and scenes. Now honestly I find tht quite boring if it were a film, mostly bc of me being born in this modern time of speed, in entertainment.

Gameplay is pretty slow, methodical and gunplay feels about almost the same as the 1st Redemption. Most of the ppl tht dont like the gameplay are just too used to fast-paced arcadey gameplay nowadays and consider this more slowpaced gameplay to "intentionally avoid the QoL of todays gaming", when tht is simply not the case. (albeit a few weird command placements on the controller) Now im not saying tht invalidates ppls criticism but it does show tht its just not the game for them. (or shuld I say dont hav the patience of learning something this complex for controller input, which is understandable) The gameplay u can get used to and it can feel a bit stiff but its still nonetheless enjoyable if ppl dont mind or enjoy the more slow, detailed gameplay.

Edit: Forgot to mention tht it certainly isnt the best game of the year or generation. (it was overhyped) But its still definitely a solid game, from my exp and only had a few small frustrations with it.
Not much in terms of replay value also. (grant it I dont replay many Open World games anyways, no matter how good they are)

The characters are amazing, the story is gripping, the details are awesome... And of course the graphics of this Red dead Redemption 2 are so stunning that i'd dare to say that it is at the top of this generation... The game is just gorgeous. However, the game is not perfect. Some secundary missions are dull and some of the tasks you've to do to get the 100% either, in adittion, in despite of the map is huge there is a big part of it empty; with nothing interesting to do. But the worst part of the game it's clearly the online mode... Which has nothing to do with other Rockstar games like Grand Theft Auto. Expand

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a hallmark of gaming with a truly lived in world a amazing story held together by a amazing cast of characters especially the protagonist Arthur Morgan. I won't go into any spoilers in my review, I should also inform you that my performance will vary from some users because I played on a Xbox One X. Lets start with the black sheep the slow opening a very long tutorial and beginning which is surprising to say the least while I did prefer this long opening I also know that some players will be turned off by this so fair warning. Players not used to slow paces and are used to the incredibly fast paced of a game such Grand Theft Auto might not feel entirely at home here. Needless to say though that doesn't change the beauty of this game and the detail in the world and how it builds not just in the world itself but in total with NPC's and the story. The new NPC system in place speaking of is a little barebones at times and can end in some mishaps but works most of the time with that in mind I also need to bring up a hallmark of Rockstar games clunky controls and sometimes bad contextual commands. It doesn't break the game and I am mainly speaking on the horses when I speak on the clunky controls. Moving past the controls is the gunplay it is better that GTA 5's and its predecessor's with a interesting focus mechanic needing to be able to relax yourself to get the most accurate shot. This would make the game more of a challenge if the enemies in the game were more accurate. The final thing I would like to touch on is the story and it is beautiful no other word describes it I won't go into any spoilers but the games story alone makes the 60$ price tag worth it in my opinion. This is the first review I've ever written on metacritic I hope that it helps people in deciding on if this game is for them. In My opinion this is the best game so far this year. Expand

"This games story is the best" I have said several times for any game made by Rockstar, They just seem to have a better understanding of how to make people care for their characters they may or may not be rooting for in the end. Well that doesnt mean its technically"This games story is the best" I have said several times for any game made by Rockstar, They just seem to have a better understanding of how to make people care for their characters they may or may not be rooting for in the end. Red Dead Redemption 2 I would have to say is either as good as the original or worse. now you might be asking "why worse?" Well that doesnt mean its technically terrible that just means i liked more elements from the first game when it came out which Red Dead Redemption was a technical and beautiful marvel filled with a rich cast of characters and story including one of my favorite characters to come out of a Rockstar game "John Marston" Im sorry for blabbering off about the other game. Red Dead Redemption 2 is just as good as the original with even more focus on characters and somewhat not even characters that are apart of the story just random people on the street or people that you might play poker with have emotions, you can specifically bad mouth a random dude on the street and end off with a gun fight or drunken brawl
now this of course is only possible with the technical minds at Rockstar and the hardware we use today. This interaction system allows players to even connect with in game characters that arent even important to the story at all. Now lets talk about Gameplay, the movement in this game is clunky but realistic in fact i havent really ever seen the characters movement in game break with put together animation. like when your character runs towards his horse and jumps on it like nothing with no real broken parts of animation its amazing. The gun play is awesome with the deadeye system making a return once again saving you from tight situations where you could be by yourself fighting close to 10 armed bandits. The game still has a realistic health function with not being able to take more than 20 shots like a tank but you still feel like you are in even more danger with every shot you take. there is a survival type element where you and your horse cant be sitting there taking shots and be running for long periods of time without eating or resting as that is a part of the game, thats right you actually have to consume items to keep your characters health, stamina, deadeye cores ripe for any chance you are in danger. cause if you are low on stamina you will dramatically slow down having to fight your pursuers without being able to run creating a battle that you were trying to run from making even worse now that you are as slow as an ox. Now talking about story progression, the story in the beginning is the slowest part of the game and mostly the worst but best part of it as you get to see characters you knew and new characters you can get to know, but this introduction could take hours to get past but its worth it. Id highly recommend anyone and i mean anyone even if they dont like westerns to give this game a shot, it isnt a perfect 10/10 but its definitly deserving its 9/10 rating.

The beginning is a little slow but after you start picking up the pace in Chapter 2 it almost hurts to have to put the controller down (I mean like seriously YOU CAN INTERACT WITH ANYONE IN THE GAME HOW CRAZY IS THAT)

The beginning is a little slow but after you start picking up the pace in Chapter 2 it almost hurts to have to put the controller down (I mean like seriously YOU CAN INTERACT WITH ANYONE IN THE GAME HOW CRAZY IS THAT) Two complaints I have are that general movement especially horse movement is clunky (I can't tell you how many times my horse just flops and I have to walk miles to buy a Horse reviver before it dies on me) and on the base consoles (Ps4/Ps4 Slim, Xbone/Xbone S) graphics are a bit blurry. Gameplay also does rarely gets repetitive at times (Mostly when you have to ride miles to get to a quest)

Def a buy, def a game of a year but there are just some kinks that prevent me from giving it a 10 it's more like a 9.5/9.7

To set the stage, I am not a fan of Rockstar Games. What I mean by this is that my impression of the game is not influenced unfairly positively because of my view of the company as a whole. They have made games that I enjoy (RDR1, GTAV, Bully) as well as games I did not enjoy so much (GTAIV, Rockstar Table Tennis.) With that being said, I'd like to jump into my review of RDR2.
The first presentation of the game is stunning, wasting no time in immersing you in a detailed setting of the year 1889. This world feels almost tangible with its level of detail in it's sky-box, weather, and the characters within. The game is not without graphical glitches, but nothing I found as game breaking. The story does well to explain Arthur Morgan's (your player character) and gang's current situation without feeling unnecessarily expository. Once you have had the opportunity to watch the opening cinematic and finally jump into controlling the game, the immersion is not broken. In controlling Arthur, you can feel his surroundings in the way he moves through them and interacts.

This, then, brings us to the controls of the game. The controls seem quite responsive though a bit sluggish and clunky at times. I had thought that this might be due the weather and environment of the prologue mission. However, even well after leaving this area, I occasionally would still experience this same issue. It is not overwhelming when it occurs but it can leave you frustrated as you choke an innocent bystander rather than mounting your horse right next to said bystander.

I'd like to use this as a chance to segue into the next major topic, the honor system and fine details of your player character. While Arthur has an established history, the game gives you ample choice in what kind of man "your" Arthur Morgan is. I can tell that a ton of TLC went into this character and his systems. You can be a man of high honor and upstanding morals or the dirtiest of outlaw scum. This will, of course, also determine the ending you receive upon the completion of the game. Even during the duration of the game, NPC's will treat you differently based on your honor or even recent events. Arthur also has a plethora of customization and stats to help make him your own. He can gain or lose weight, both of which have certain benefits and detriments. Visual customization such as hair and beard style add a visual touch further differentiating one player from another, though, you will have to grow your hair and beard out for certain styles. Hats and clothing can be bought and worn as well.

In terms of sound, musically, this game does well to sink you into the ambient feel of the "wild west." More of the music seems to be ambiance aiming to immerse you further into the game, but there are certainly some stand out, dramatic, tracks to be enjoyed. The ambient noise seems to match you surroundings from the noises of nature while out in the wilderness to the idle chat of NPCs while riding through town. The voice acting of the NPCs are great and the conversations can range from somber and serious, to outlandish and ridiculous. Your posse's voice actors are splendid. The conversation seldom feels forced and never feels out of place. The detail is exquisite. If you are speaking to a character as they walk away, Arthur will begin to raise his voice to ensure they can still hear. The same is true for characters walking closer. They will go from shouting to a normal volume for conversation. If you have an event interrupt your conversation with someone, after the interruption has passed, the character's will apologize for the disturbance and get the conversation back on track.

This game is beautiful and does well on improving the original RDR formulas. In many areas. The "dead eye" aiming system is back as well as fun features such as the lasso. Horse riding has been improved to offer a more versatile system. Horses are all different. Some are large and slow, others are fast and small. Some are balanced. Taking care of the horse also effects it's performance. There is an area that I do not believe to be so improved though, the weapon menus. When opening the menu, a wheel comes up and time slows (but does not stop). One space may have multiple items which can be navigated by pulling RT or LT. I often found myself having to cycle though multiple slots to find the one item I needed.

In summary, while this game is not perfect, it's darn close. I believe this game to be on par with other such masterpieces as GTAV and The Witcher 3. It has it's flaws but I think buyers will certainly be getting there money's worth as it is now for all edition's of this game. Even more so when the online beta hits later in November of 2018. If you are a fan of open worlds, good characters, great stories, and solid game play, this game should not escape your radar!

By that, I don't mean that you should review the game based on your first impressions. If so, then you don't know how to review a game. Period. Second of all, the majority did not know that one can customize their controls based on their play-style: It could include adjustments in sensibility, button mapping, camera angle, first-person mode adjustments, etc. Always go to the settings before starting the actual game and adjust your controls. Experiment what's best, thus, making the game more fluid, and less bad reviews would appear because they actually read this comment. What I'm trying to say is that one has to solve their own issue with the game, or something that it might throw off their desire of continuing playing Red Dead Redemption 2. If it's something that's based on controls, which is what most of the bad reviews were concerned about, then solve it first in-game before criticizing stuff that doesn't make sense. That goes for the people who doesn't know how to actually play a game. It's disappointing seeing the majority like that.

Now, I'm my opinion, this game has solid graphics, fixed cinematics, enjoyable gameplay and can't wait for the online beta. That's all. Simple.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Red dead redemption 2 is a great game, being a prequel to the first Red Dead Redemption it had a lot to live up to, which it did. Red Dead Redemption 2 has one of the best story modes I have played in a long time, it introduces the new main character Arthur Morgan who is a member of the Dutch van der lin gang who wants to be an outlaw in a world growing more with civilization. This game introduces features that are great like cleaning your gun and being able to upgrade and customize your horses saddle. There are some features that feel like their there just be there, like how you have to shave every other day if you want to keep a clean face, and how you have to eat to keep your cores replenished. But that’s what rockstar wanted they wanted this game to feel as real as it could be, they make you feel like you are living in 1899, that’s why you have to eat, shave and pull down the hammer or the lever on the gun to shoot again and you have to wait for the your to get center mass again. Another great thing about this game is the acting, the voice acting and physical acting is life like and realistic. They characters have conversations ranging from their personal life’s how they are feeling about other characters and their distrust of Dutch and Micah. This game also in its cutscene uses elements that directors of films use. It uses a lot of non diegetic sound which sound the audience can hear but not the characters in the game. It also uses light in a perfect way, in the end of the game when Arthur sends John away to be with his family Arthur gets in a fight with Micah, Arthur loses this fight and as he is sitting on the ground as he dies he looks off into the distance, and sees the sun rise, it kinda acts of symbol of Arthur hopes for John raises as he dies, this let’s Arthur die happy because he feels like in all of his life he has done bad, he thinks this time he has done something good. The closing statement I have about this game is that is amazing but not perfect it offers new and fun features but also some ones that feel like they could’ve been left out. The game suffers from repetitive missions which usually end up in a shoot out, riding your horse long distances just to start missions that end up making you leave on your horse. I still think that this game has a potential to be one of the best games of 2018 if not the best. Expand

Sometimes it can get annoying because you can't save in missions and some of those missions take so long. This has been undoubtedly the best gaming experience I have had in years, the best after the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt , in terms of Open World games.

The amount of details, the realism and sheer amount of authenticity is mind boggling and makes you hard to differentiate between a video game and real life. This is the most realistic , "non-gamey" video game I have ever played.

Everything from the hunting , to the walking , to the horse riding , to character interactions feels so damn realistic.

Coming to the story, I just loved the story. Arthur Morgan is now one of my favorite video game character of all time now. And the game does a great job of creating a very well rounded story for him. Best protagonist of any Rockstar Game according to me.

The side missions and stranger quests are on par of Witcher 3 levels and extremely well done.

The only negatives of this game are that the game is too easy and does not have any difficulty slider, and the economy is kind of broken, and not so memorable ambient music. But some places the songs and background scores are epic !

When a game is still able to pull me back into it's world even after spending close to 80-100 hours in it, that is the best kind of game !

The best game of the generation, beside The Witcher 3 and God of War !

    PROS :

    Open World
    Characters
    Animations
    Realism
    Mission variety
    Story
    Protagonist
    Side Missions
    AI
    Organic NPC Activities and interactions

    CONS :

    Too Easy
Economy is kind of broken, nothing to buy even if you have the money !
Music is not so memorable at times

online however feels like a dulled down version of story mode that you can play with friends as of november 30th it's still in beta but it still feels lacking. a lot of missions are repetitive and boring (not to mention they don't pay well) and the only use of those missions is to get players to attack you. speaking of players attacking you brings me to the pvp of online. it is odd at best because in mission pvp sometimes after a player has already taken damage they might not from your next shot like one time i had a double barrel shotgun and hit a player directly in the chest and the damage stunned him so i shot again to get the kill and he took no damage but there was the blood effect. overall online could use work in the full release but right now it's kinda bad. my rating would be a 9/10 losing one point for the beta not quite working right

Online: although a bit laggy and the occasional glitch occurs it’s always good fun to start a town shoot out or steal a stage coach with your friends, although there’s not as many random encounters in online it still has a little story in it as well, it could be better but then again at the time of this review it’s good for a beta. ascetics: beautiful, just beautiful I have no words except it looks Gorgeous. The storytelling in this game is some of Rockstar's best work. The "morality" meter at the bottom of the screen caries Arthur into what kind of person the player chooses, an evil one or a good one, and you will pay for it in the end. As of gameplay, Rockstar Games have successfully found the perfect balance of storytelling and action, as each mission is packed with an even amount of conversations, cutscenes and horse riding, gunfights. However, I rate this game a 9 instead of a 10 due to the over excessive amount of "realistic" aspects to this game, that generally just lower the quality of life aspects. For example, when picking up items/looting bodies, you must loot each individually, one by one. Another example is how if your horse is not in range, you cannot call it, and you are stuck having to walk or steal another horse. Nevertheless, this game is definitely in my top 5 games I've ever played, and for anyone who enjoys RPGs a must-play. Expand

A huge positive point of the XBOX One X version is how stunning it looks in native 4k (the graphics of the ps4 pro version are super blurry).

Is the game perfect? No. The story comes slowly in the first chapters and will certainly not be experienced as fun by everyone. I too felt that the story at the start of the game did not really fit with a fleeing gang of outlaws. Partly due to the focus on realism and the many gameplay mechanics that sometimes run together, this can lead to irritation. Also the mission design is a bit outdated and the the western feeling we all know from the first RDR is missed in the second game.

Yet this game is so much more than shooting enemies and making it to the next chapter. There is something beautiful in exploring the lands on your own. Seeking freedom in the quietness of the wilderness. Encountering a lot of events in the vast open world. Discovering all kinds of animals and people. It really is one big adventure. And because the gang is haunted by the law, no chapter is the same. There is a continuous change in locations, feelings and behavior of the characters.

In addition, Arthur Morgan is by far the most human protagonist I ever played. His feelings, actions, emotions and changing view of the world as the story progresses. It is a fantastic and unforgettable experience!

There is enough content in this game to last over 100 hours not including the ever expanding online mode. You can fish, hunt, collect, explore and experience the immersive open world scenery and random encounters. The soundtrack is also incredible and is a perfect match for the game. The gang's characters are all interesting in their own way and give you insights into their lives in random interactions in the camp. On another note, the last few hours of the story are incredible and leave you wanting more, despite playing the game for 50+ hours already which is always something that indicated how good a game is. The only downside I could find is that the movement mechanics feel a bit dated and are similar to Grand Theft Auto V, although the gun mechanics are great.

Now, I've played the predecessor about 4 months back so I am a bit biased but I think you can very well enjoy it without having any prior experience with Red Dead.

The obvious out of the way: this game is gorgeous. I played it on Xbox One S, which is not exactly a power-house, and it ran pretty well. Sure, a few frame-drops here and there. Texture pop-ins, too (mostly in the end-game), but far too little that it could bring down the score. Here and there the facade might break a bit, especially in first-person (which is included out of the box), but otherwise it is easily the most immersive 3rd-person game I've come across.

The characters are great and very lovable (and, very often, very despisable) and quite well written. You'll know almost all of their names by the end (and there are some 30 or 40 important chars), especially since the main story itself is pretty long. Their interactions and emotions toward each other can be felt strongly and one loves and hates with them along the journey.

Media focused on the realism this game provides from the start but I found it perfect. It is a slow game overall and some mechanics might need some getting used to. But it isn't nearly as realistic as many would want you to believe. Sure, every once in a while you've gotta eat, same as your horse. But you'll always have enough provisions and the penalty for not doing so is pretty minor. Most other things come quite natural and are not too heavily relied on by the game's mechanics or gameplay.

The only (big) thing I did NOT like here were the controls... It is known by many as the nemesis of Rockstar and this game is no different. I'm all for a realistic approach and having a slower character does not bother me too much. However, shooting behind cover, indoors, or with a Machete-wielding lunatic some feet away from you, can become very annoying to deal with. There is a lot to tweak in the game-settings but it never really felt sufficient. This, however, has been a problem since the first game came out and, by now, I've lost all hope for a "perfect" implementation by Rockstar.

    COMPARED TO RDR1:
If you've not played Red Dead Redemption, this section is of no use to you. If you have, here are some things that stood out to me, compared to the first game.

    Riding:
Riding was pretty much perfect in RDR. I found the tank-controls to work great, and the audio-visual feedback was on the brink of perfection.
    They ditched that.
Don't get me wrong, the riding in RDR2 is still very good. The horses feel heavier and they added maneuvers to make them more agile. It certainly has more realism to it, but a mix of the two might have been a better choice (just my opinion though). Tank-controls + more maneuvers + weighty horses = perfect?
As it stands, though, RDR will remain the best riding game for me (for now).

    Duelling:
Oh well, duelling is anything but fun in this game.
The first one had you move your hand to your weapon, pull it out, and log-in your targets.
The second one has you pull the trigger... slowly. But it's not really more than that, with a bit of aiming at the end to get off the killing shot. At the same time, you have to focus on your opponent, while watching the "pull-the-trigger-slowly"-meter in the bottom right corner. The bigger your monitor, the more cumbersome it is.
Again: there's a tad more realism here, as you don't get the opportunity to get 6 targets in at once, but the "pulling-the-trigger-slowly" mechanic was very annoying and absolutely no fun. Luckily, there aren't that many duels here, so it's not too big of a deal. A mix of both mechanics would have been better, though (again).

Fishing (and a bit of swimming):
Well, there wasn't anything in RDR. There is now. Have fun :)

    Hunting:
In RDR, you manly had your region and maybe a certain spawn-point to hunt specific animals.
RDR2 gives you the chance to actually track down your prey. Similarly to the "witcher-vision" in Witcher 3, you can discover clues with your Dead-Eye-vision, making it possible to search and find (legendary) animals in a more immersive way.

    Story:
Honestly, I found the story in RDR to be just about enough. It's not bad, but also not great. It suffices and does not overstay it's welcome (it's not that long, really). Would probably make a good movie-series though, i guess.
RDR2 dumps that and presents a pretty big amount of story missions, intrigue, friendship, family, etc. It's just really, really good. I'm not sure if it's perfect, but certainly great. It's an awesome prequel and if you liked RDR, you'll most likely enjoy what's offered here.
