The game is never amazing, but it is never awful either. If they fix the technical side a bit I might be tempted to give it an 8. Equally I feel it kind of deserves a 6 for their technical mistakes. But overall given its less than premium price a 7 seems a fair score.

If you are still not sure, wait a few weeks, they'll probably have fixed the tech side and you can enjoy the game as it should have been released.

It is insane that everyone hates on such an OLD SCHOOL STYLE platforming adventure such as this. The exact definition of what I'd expect in a Metroidvania game in full 3D! There are issues... many of them technical issues I'm sure could be overcome with some better coding and use of the Xbox One hardware, nonetheless, what is there is FUN! There's a great deal of LOOT to collect (some very unique and some just down right funny and cute) and the whole game has a magical feel to it similar to that of RARE LTD games such as Starfox Adventure, Banjo 1, Kameo and Conker. The Core Bots themselves animate and have personalities that makes them feel like more than just tools to help to past the next area. I actually feel a pet like connection to these awesome companions! The platforming is absolutely amazing and fully top notch... but as I'd mentioned before, the Xbox One version has a great deal of graphical issues, most of which are absent on the AWESOME PC version of this game. From time to time, landscape features might pop in and out or flicker oddly and the shadows LOD bias is not very far, so the larger shadows cast from the surrounding mountains and huge boulders sometimes looks odd and loads funny in the distance, which can take you out of the moment for a bit. Despite that, as far as pure game play mechanics, longevity and just plain fun, I cannot help but wholeheartedly recommend ReCore! This game will sit especilly well with those gamers who've spent many a long night playing games like Super Metroid, Castlevania Symphony of the Night and the many spinoff's the Castlevania series had on Gameboy's and DS's over time. Lastly, fans of Megaman and Metroid Prime will definitely see influences from their favorite franchises in this game with a bit of new magic tossed in. Regardless of the oddly simple color matching battle system, battles can become very complicated and getting high combos can become fun! Beating your own scores is something we used to do in Arcades in the 80's, so it's not hard to see why a lot of Millennials and Post-Generation X'er's simply don't get it... They are angry about the story being "awful" but these folks have never played an incomprehensible Japanese game so poorly translated that you cannot help but hysterically laugh til you pee and still have a ton of fun playing. Back in the olden days of gaming, when most games were made by Japanese game masters primarily bent on testing your absolute limits of both FRUSTRATION and PERSEVERANCE! If you are the type of gamer who gives up easily, you can look elsewhere for entertainment. Many of the harder challenges require reflexes and timing most GTA/COD/Halo only gamers (i.e. mostly kids...) simply won't appreciate. Some who really enjoy games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime and even Shadow Complex (Epic Games) who want to see what it should play and look like from a 3rd person perspective, this is a great game. By no means is this a flawless gem... but it's still wonderfully fun to play and worth the price of 20-40 bux (depending on when and where you pick up your copy). I was lucky enough to get mine on sale for 20 bux on Xbox Live so I must say that it's one of the best 20 dollar games I've ever played! PLEASE MAKE SEQUELS! AGAIN, THE GAME IS THE REWARD... Some of y'all youngin's simply don't get that... (old guy rant over) Expand

However something happens half way through the game that feels like a lead dev or designer quit. Suddenly the path through a map makes no sense and causes you to miss 90% of it and then you hit stages going up a tower that feel like they've just passed out the game making you do the same thing over and over again. Finish a floor and yep you guessed it the next ones the same as the 3 before it. Staying interested to finish becomes a challenge due to then having to grind you level up after skipping most of one of the maps earlier.

    I love this game!!

Now for the reason I decided to write this review. Recore has proven that the gap between grey gamers & modern gamers is huge. Recore does not have the best graphics around, it's framerate is dodgy & the textures are poor. For some people this is a disaster. They can't even bring themselves to pick up the box in the shop in case it infects them with it's low resolution-itis.

And that's the problem because those people are missing out on a game that is so much fun that I can't put it down. It's a breath of fresh air that blows through the so called AAA games and shows that modern games can be fun and interesting.

Buy it and try it for yourself.

I haven't finished the game as yet, so this is a review based on about 10-12 hours of game play.

The graphics are fine, no issue with those and they help create a great atmosphere. it's not hyper-realistic (as you can tell from the trailers) and I think it looks great and goes well with the style of game.

I enjoy collecting things. Each map and dungeon allows you to see your progress and how are you are along to collect all the chest, items and cores. Aside from the collecting the game play can be quite challenging and the ammo colours definitely add a new dimension to the whole situation which is great! At first it seemed a bit easy, but when enemies start resisting your current fire mode it adds a challenge.

There are loot chests hidden all over the place to allow you to upgrade your Core bots which is pretty fun and it allows you to change how you tackle enemies based on the bot you're using.

The music is great, repetitive, but helps set the tone of where you are or what you're doing (such as combat). Some of the pieces definitely help sell a lonely isolated feel.

The Core bots you meet along the way are interesting and speak some unintelligible language (although there are translators out there apparently). The audio bites you pick up that are essentially voice messages of people involved on Eden are a nice way to sell the world and draw you in.

Definitely worth while picking up if you enjoy would enjoy a third person puzzle-shooter with an interesting story.

Microsoft didn't really market the game enough for everyone to know exactly what it was. However, having played the game for a decent amount of time now, I believe this is exactly what was needed. I'd say this game is a diamond in the rough, in that the reviews of this game aren't too good, but seriously.. play it. This review isn't going to go too in depth on story or characters you'll encounter as it's easy enough to find out on YouTube etc.

    Pros:

    - This game has some of the most engaging characters I've seen this generation. They would really benefit from a ReCore animated movie of sorts. That, coupled with some great voice acting makes for a brilliant set of characters.

    - The gameplay is so tight that it almost feels like an original Xbox game. If you fall off of a ledge, it's completely your fault, the gameplay is near perfect in my opinion. I'm not gonna go into too much of the gameplay mechanics, just search it on YouTube and you'll know what the game has to offer in terms of gameplay within minutes.

    - Story. This game definitely puts you in a world where you need to discover the story, its not given to you on a plate. As you play, you uncover parts of the story in hidden audio logs scattered around the world of Far Eden. Playing through the campaign without exploring will still give you a decent idea of what's going on in the cutscenes and the occasional monologue.

    - Art style. Although this game doesn't have the best graphics you've ever seen, the art style the developers went for really compliments the type of game ReCore is. And for the price of £29.99, the graphics are pretty damn playable. Especially when you look into the distance, it really gives you a sense of being lost. The game makes you feel small and that's a good thing.

    - Nostalgia factor. When playing this game, I seriously felt warm inside. It brought me back to a time where games were simple, yet challenging. For some reason when playing ReCore, I kept getting a Blinx vibe.. which is strange because they're nothing alike.

    Cons:

    - Although load times didn't take away from the fun I had with ReCore, I can't help but add this as a con. For a game like this to have the load times it does is quite confusing. As of now, the load times peak at around 30 seconds.

My verdict on the game is that although Microsoft maybe didn't market the game as much as they could have, I believe they were going off of word of mouth. The fans will do the marketing of the game and maybe that was the right way to go. I'm not lying to you, this game is one of my favourite game this generation, right up there with Sunset Overdrive. The only reason I'm not giving ReCore a 10/10 is simply because of the load times which although didn't take away from the overall experience for me, is an issue nonetheless. I'm asking you NOT to listen to the reviews this game has, not even mine, but to play it and form your own opinion. This game definitely deserves a sequel.

If you're here and only looking at scored reviews, please consider reading an actual writeup from a journalist that has similar game tastes to you, away from Metacritic. If you haven't been keeping up with game industry news, there are a lot of misguided politics behind this game, which would be why other reviewers are saying that there are false 0's posted.

I want to rate this game higher, I really do, but this is the first time I've experienced a let down in a game that started out so promising.

Recore feels fresh for a shooter platformer, that quite frankly is a 3D version of Mega Man. Yet, that didn't rob me from the fun. It has original and fun bots, puzzles, platforming, and RPG qualities that make you want to play it. Seriously, the curiosity and drive to acquire parts for my bots kept me going.

Here's where Recore falls short. It's painfully obvious, the creators ran out of time. From long load times, lazily inaccessible areas (ironic for a game that rewards exploring) that show us, there's more to the game they aren't giving us. The story loses stream real fast, the environments go from curious and eye catching, to literally baron and uneventful. You go from being guided and slightly pushed to find more, achieve more to combat the enemy, to a near completely open sandbox world with subtle direction.

The key here is, they are addressing the content issue. On Dec. 2nd, they've shown us a new bot is coming and more to the story/dungeons in a DLC (no release date yet). Whether it's free or paid maybe the big turning point of this game. If you haven't bought it yet, I would wait for the DLC to drop (if free) so you can experience a much more full game that I did.

For right now I give it a 6 out of 10. Hopefully the DLC is free and fills in the gaps that they should of filled at launch.

Even though you'll definitely get the feel of an unfinished game, I liked it very much.
Grafics are just ok; Characters likeable and Story quite nice.
Controls however are very precise, which comes in handy for the N64ish Jump'n'run parts of the game. Anyway this game feels completely like a N64-platformer. You just have to run around and collect tons of things. I'd recommend it to

I'd recommend it to people who like old school games.

    Contras:
    - Tiempos de carga inaceptables
    - Historia rebuscada
    - Exceso de "backtraking"
    - Requisitos inflados en la versión de compatibles

Both the platforming and the shooting hold up, then, but they barely develop after the first few hours. [December 2016, p.116]

A promising premise hampered by technical faults and outrageously poor pacing. [Nov 2016, p.60]

ReCore has a lot of strengths but also weaknesses. Great platforming hides an empty world and boring fights. The technical aspect of the game also does not help, occasionally even frustrates. [Issue #268]
